”Det finns lika många rutiner som det finns fartyg”: En undersökning om rutiner vid hantering av skeppsapotek ur säkerhetssynpunkt.2012Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate different routine for handling ship´s pharmacy from a safety point of view and how the paramedics experience the routine procedures regarding the handling of ship's pharmacy.

The survey was based on interviews and surveys from medical responsible officers. 19 questionnaires were distributed to a class of paramedics in Kalmar Maritime Academy via a contact person, of those 19 four people were interviewed. Surveys of the same nature were also sent out via the internet.

The survey results show that there are no clear guidelines on how procedures for handling ship’s pharmacy must be maintained. However, from safety point of view paramedics did not see this as somewhat problematic. In addition, the study could identify three different routine procedures that were used at sea, namely routines using Excell documents, keeping a journal and routines with the help of the maintenance program AMOS. In terms of cooperation between the ship and drug suppliers are experiencing respondents that consistently works well. However, there exist problems such as wrong orders or drug suppliers send drugs with short expiry dates.

    Abstract [en]

In this report, it has been studied if a board game can be a good complement to the rest of the teaching of the marine engineer program at Kalmar Maritime Academy. A board game was produced and evaluated by students.

The idea of this work has been to give students an alternative learning technique. This study technique is not related to the teaching at the maritime academy. With help of the game it has been explored what students think about the use of a board game to learn parts of various topics in education.

To seek answers to our problem, we have carried out a qualitative study. We inductively assumed empirical with a pragmatic approach Interviews of a relatively high degree of standardization has been made with students and teachers.

It is not possible to determine if this board game is, or is not a good complement to the rest of the teaching when taking into consideration that study techniques are individual for each student.

Vilka preventiva åtgärder vidtar svenska rederier mot piratattacker?2012Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Piracy is a subject that concerns many people with connection to shipping. It has also been brought up in media lately because naval vessels have been sent down to Gulf of Aden for protection against pirate attacks. The purposes with this paper is to establish what measures the shipping companies are taking to prevent piracy attacks and if shipping companies are following existing guidelines? To answer the questions we have used a qualitative method. The information we used as a base for the results has been collected from four responsible officers working for Swedish shipping companies. In the summery of our results we have compared the guidelines and how the companies act. The shipping companies who have been surveyed for this paper is anonymous because of safety reasons. The result of the paper shows that all companies are taking measures to prevent piracy attack.

Förbränningsoptimering med hjälp av vät- och syrgas2012Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Environmental impact and fuel consumption is a strong recurrent topic concerning transportation at sea, land and air. Combustion engines today and certainly for many years to come play a major role in this transportation. Fuel consumption and environmental impact from these engines must be adapted to future requirements. This report describes a diploma thesis about enhancing combustion of a combustion engine. This by adding hydrogen and oxygen to the combustion air.

The project includes a theoretical part and a practical part in which the theoretical information is evaluated and supplemented by practical tests on a diesel generator. The diesel generator was modified and equipment for producing hydrogen and oxygen was designed. Measurements and tests were later carried out with different volume flow rates on the gas at two different base loads.

Measurements performed during the project show no reduction in fuel consumption and/or reduced environmental impact. The minor differences that have been noticed are unfortunately within the limits off possible measurement errors. However the facts studied many times shows opposite results. Since no action to change the injection timing or improvement of fuel control was performed on the engine, this is considered to be two of the reasons that no positive result was detected under this specific project.

Nödbogseringsmanual M/S Calmare Nyckel2011Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our goal has been to develop an Emergency Towing Manual for the scholar ship M/S Calmare Nyckel. It would be in line with present rules and conventions and facilitate decision-making in situations requiring emergency towing. Our project client is Bengt Carlsson, Master on the Calmare Nyckel, and after intitial talks the work was set in motion taking form of a project. The Emergency Towing Manual is foremost based upon present legislation and guidelines but also on other ships ETM:s, which we have found succesfull. The project was carried out within our schedule and the resulting manual was well appreciated by us and the project client.M/S Calmare Nyckel is now equipped with a fully functioning Emergency Towing Manual which meets all applicable demands. Our hope is that the manual will never have to be used during real emergencies – however, regularly refered to in exercises as part of the onboard emergency prepardness.

Utflaggning och omstrukturering.: Sju verksamheter på sjöfartsintensiva Åland berättar om sina upplevelser.2011Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns the flagging out of merchant navy vessels and its consequenses. Flaggingout is method used by ship owners in order to gain advantages. Under a different flag, thevessel's legal residence become the subject of another country´s laws. Toward the end of thefirst decade of the 20th century ferry -and passangervessels trading in the Baltic Sea wereflagged out from Åland to the flag of Sweden. Flagging out to Sweden is not common but thespecific circumstances for this trade has made the Swedish ship's register interesting for shipowners. The primary reason for flagging out was said to be currency exposure between theSwedish krona and the Euro, however there are other reasons aswell, for instance the EU banon wet tobacco. The paper studies the example of Åland from the different point of views. The purpose of the paper is to study if and how stakeholders experienced any impact fromflagging out. The results show, from different point of views, to what extent a community isaffected when shipping companies flag out there vessels.

    Abstract [en]

There is not adequate lesson basis for the course in maintenance technology, module TR I interms of lifting devices. This in combination with the accident reports which can be found inINSJÖ has led us to compile teaching materials in the form of images and text. To establish areal need exists, a qualitative study is conducted. Interviews with chief officers whopreviously studied at the 4-year Master Programme in Nautical Science in Kalmar under thecurrent curriculum was conducted by telephone. The results of these interviews showed that aneed existed and we could proceed with the compilation of teaching materials. The results ofthe examination and discussion with the teacher of the course gave an idea of which parts ofthe subject that would be delved into deeper in the crib. For the instructional materials weused mainly laws and regulations as evidence base. After consultation with the teacher wedecided that the crib will be complemented by a power point presentation which the teacherswill be able to use in the classroom.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis was a research on the onboard experience of female officers, today active in the Swedish merchant fleet, and of their thoughts regarding their future at sea. The purpose was to clarify whether the deck officer profession as of today is suited for women and if something could be done to make it more attractive to them; this in view of the small relative number of women in the profession.

I chose the qualitative research design, analyzing data from five semi-structured interviews. This method was used since my primary objective was to understand possible gender issues onboard.

The result showed that there is nothing in a deck officer’s work that can not be performed by a woman. Furthermore, the result pointed to the conclusion that female deck officers are subject to gender related discrimination and sexual harassment, but scarcely. The greatest obstacle for a future at sea proved to be family related, which also made more specific suggestions on how to make the deck officer profession more attractive to women difficult.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of school grades as a merit, when a mastermariner student applies for a job as a junior ship officer after graduation from the maritime academy. This was investigated by interviewing the personnel managers at four Swedish shipping companies, tohear their opinions on school grades as a merit when recruiting junior officers to their ships. Wesearched for similar previous studies to obtain a deeper context understanding of the subject. We foundtwo previous theses dealing with the topic of recruiting officers, but none of them concerns the schoolgrades. School grades are something that affects all officer students more or less, and it was thereforerelevant and timely to conduct a study on this. The result of this study can not be generalized andapplied to all Swedish shipping companies because we only heard four shipping companies opinions.Among those we interviewed, there was a strong consensus that school grades are not relevant toexamine as a merit in recruitment but instead there are merits that weighs a lot heavier.

Alarm på bryggan: trygghet och irritation2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Work on a navigational bridge consists to a great extent of control tasks. Control and alarm systems are available to facilitate this work. The interaction between humans and systems depends partly on the  user's knowledge and experience and partly on bridge design and technologies’ usability. The topic of this thesis is the handling of alarms and alarm systems on  navigational  bridges.  The aim was to  study  whether there are strategies for this and if so, to illustrate how these strategies work. For this reason seven officers’  experiences were examined with  qualitative methods, semi-structured interviews and content analysis.

The investigation led among other things to the following conclusions:

Alarm handling is often done according to unwritten rules and agreements. It is seen as part of the profession and is done on the side.

Officers follow a scheme when an alarm calls for their attention.

Officers construct their own tools and methods to deal with ergonomic problems and malfunctions.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to explore what possibilities we, as newly graduated without experience as an officer, have to compete for a job on a shore based company which is active within the maritime sphere. We consider this relevant when the labour market for Swedish deck officers has changed during the last 10 years. To match our purpose we used the qualitative method in interviewing shore based companies associated with different areas in the marine industry and thereby examine if a degree in nautical science is considered as competency enough to obtain employment ashore. To make this survey we conducted interviews over the telephone and personal meetings when possible, with for example head of personnel or others whom are high up within the organization. The result varied between the different companies, some companies could consider hiring an newly graduated without experience as an officer while others considered the experience or a higher academic education desirable when some positions demand a more oriented knowledge in economics, maritime law or logistics.
