”I don’t give a shit about fashion. I’m a man”: En kvalitativ undersökning om maskuliniteter och mansideal i Magazin Café2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to identify what kind of masculinity is shown in 54 articles of the Swedish lifestyle magazine Magazine Café of 1993 and 2008, and in which way this masculinity may be different from eachother.

The study included four magazine issues of each year with analysis focus on main articles and abolishment of reviews and press items.  The method was semiotic analysis with focus on manly characteristics and stereotypes.

The result showed that the normative man pictured in Magazine Café in 1993 was a man’s-man interested in manly characteristic business as sports, outdoor adventures and women. Fifteen years later not much has changed. The manly characteristics are the same but they have been complemented with a man-by-man accepted and homosexually inspired vain.

Media Management i praktiken: En uppsats om ledarskapskommunikation på tidskriftsredaktioner2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The view on leadership has changed over time and a lot of research in this area has beenmade. Not so long time ago the internal communication was discovered as an important factor for successful leadership. Other research in this area has come up with theories that point out media organizations as diverging from other companies when it comes to the leadership in them. This survey investigates just how important this internal communication is when it comes to great leadership. The focus of the investigation is of media organizations and the question if these diverge from other organizations has also been an important part of it. The method that has been conducted is qualitative interviews and the people that have been interviewed were four editors-in-chief and one consultant in internal communication. I have examined these respondents view on internal communication and leadership communication in media organizations. Divergencies in media management from other organizations and whether there is some general way to be a good leader have also been questions for the respondents to answer. The conclusions I have come up with are that the internal communication is very important when it comes to lead an organization. There are also differences between leading media organizations compared to other organizations and the main reason for this is that the people working there are creative and discuss their opinions more with their leaders. When it comes to requirements in special skills being an editor-inchief my conclusion here develops into a new theory. According to this theory there is no general way to lead editorial staff but there is one basic skill that is required which is good

    communication.

    Abstract [en]

Authors: Jonas Franzén and Jim Kautto

Title: Information campaign analysis of the Region Council of Kalmar Counties public information campaign about final storage of radioactive waste.

Level: BA Thesis in Media and Communication Studies.

Key words: Campaign, Campaign analysis, final storage of radioactive waste, Region Council.

    Language: Swedish

Content: The Regional Council of Kalmar County launched a campaign about final storage of radioactive waste in the spring of 2009. This study analyzes how that campaign was received by the target group.

Theory: Following theories have been used in the study; theories of communication, planning of communication, public campaigns and receptions studies.

Method: Methods used in this study is observing people passing the exhibition, asking questions to people passing the exhibition and two focus groups. We also asked questions to people riding the bus where the commercial was shown. Finally we got background information from two interviews with the creators of the campaign.

Results: The campaign was launched based on a political decision. Despite that the decision was vague and that the Region Council was lacking a clear objective and measureable goals, the campaign still came out as a success. Since the objective with the campaign was to broaden the dialogue regarding final storage of radioactive waste, and make the public more informed about what could happen in Oskarshamn if the final storage comes there, the campaign succeeded in waken up some interest from the public opinion. The studies could not determine whether the campaign decreased the public's worries about the final storage of radioactive waste or not.

Designförslag på alkolåsmodul för båtar: 2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this report we address a problem at sea, namely alcohol. The limit at sea measured in ‰ (permille) is at 1,0 ‰ but in a car the limit is 0,2 ‰. This topic is relevant and it has also been brought up in a TV-show that showed people under the influence of alcohol being taken care of by the coastguard (www.kanal5.se). With this in mind we're presenting a design proposal of an alcolock module to install in pleasure boats. The module should be simple to use and not to be seen as a burden. The purpose of this alcolock is to prevent people under the influence of alcohol from hurting themselves or others in their environment due to inattention or recklessness. Everyone onboard should have their own assignments to create the harmony of “Happy Ship”.

The study of the alcolock module consists of surveys and interviews with the users to get as close to an independent view as possible regarding design and function, without our influence. To aid us, we used a theoretic framework called Activity Theory (AT).

The result was a design proposal of an alcolock combined with a drivers license. The drivers license is inserted in the card reader of the alcolock module and will remain there for the duration of the trip.

This design proposal might result in a safer environment at sea, since the operator has to breathe in the alcolock, and possess a valid drivers licence to be able to start the boat. If the operator has alcohol on his/her breath the speed will be reduced with consideration of the amount of alcohol. The insurance policy might also either be reduced or increased, depending on if there were alcohol on the operators breath or not. The reason for this is that the boat has to be movable in case of bad weather or an accident. There was also a suggestion to how the log on process would work with the different administrational pages.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In our case study we investigate how media chose to illuminate the process of court proceedings concerning a one specific rape case in Sweden during the spring and autumn 2007. For our study we have chosen to investigate two Swedish daily newspapers, one known to be a serious morning newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, and the other an evening tabloid newspaper Expressen. We would like to see whether the reports of the trial diverge and if that is, how they differ.

The rape took place in Stockholm’s posh area named Stureplan in March 2007. The two men 21 and 25 years old, accused for the crime were acquitted after the first instance. The appeal was lodged to the second instance where they were convicted for rape. We find it interesting to find out whether media considered the men innocent and gave an objective view after the first trial or if media judged the men nevertheless.

To find out how the media wrote about the men we used a qualitative content analysis. We looked for characteristics in the newspapers, those being for example, who get to talk? What did they say? How are the people involved described, trustworthy? Using the theory of Media Logic we have drawn conclusions of why media has chosen to report as they did.

Our conclusion is that both newspapers are very similar in their coverage of the rape. They also almost solely took the woman’s, victim’s part by letting her communicate her opinion and emotions to the general public during the entire process. What we found interesting was that Expressen almost used texts that were subjective while Dagens Nyheter reported about the case in the same way, but in their newsarticles. The media furthermore show a feeling of victory when the men are ordered guilty of the rape. The media legitimize their earlier preferential treatment for the woman by the announcement “we were right all the time” and the Swedish judicial system had made a mistake.

Det glorifierade Sverige: en kvalitativ studie om nationalism i två tidningars miljöjournalistik2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study searches for hidden nationalism in two Swedish news papers’ environmental journalism. How it contributes to a national identity and creates “we” against “them”.

The purpose of this study is to show how important it is to be aware of what picture Swedish media gives of Sweden concerning environmental journalism to the readers.

The theories are based on nationalism, banal nationalism, medias and identities and “we” and “them”. The method used is critical discourse analysis where language and power is in focus.

We analysed 56 texts in two of the largest Swedish news papers.

We searched for signs proving that Swedish media glorifies Sweden within environmental journalism.

The most important result was that we so obviously could see signs of “we” and “them”. That contributed to signs of nationalism and Swedish identities.

We found that if you keep writing about Sweden when it is good and not write when it is bad you will give the readers a glorified picture. This picture can in turn cause the people to feel that the environmental issues are distant. Through constant writing about other countries failure, Sweden’s good performance and our Swedish children’s future the Swedish identity is strengthened.

    Abstract [sv]

To work actively on creating value for brands is not an easy task. There are so many brands out there today and major strategies are required to stand out among all of them. The purpose of this study is to see whether companies that usually help other companies to enhance the value of their brand, actively work to empower their own brand internally, within the company. Do they forget that they in fact have a brand of their own to focus on while constantly helping others? This study is focused on two media companies and the study is based on qualitative interviews with people on different positions within the companies, in order to get a fair view of this issue. My results of this study shows that these two companies does not work on enhancing their own brand internally but it also shows double standards, since both companies find it crucial to have a strong brand to reach out to people on the market.

The purpose of this case study was to view if there were any differences and similarities between Swedish and American female leaders, with focus on the Swedish female leaders. We also wanted to find out if the American female leaders had problem whit the classcelling.

Our case study is a quality method, because we wanted to reach the dep't that quality methods can reach. We interviewed four Swedish female leaders and tried to get in touch whit American female leaders but whit out any success. So instead we analyzed already existing research about the American female leadership.

Our result showed that there were some differences between the two countries; in the same time we also found similarities. The classcelling tends to exist more in Sweden than in the US.

    Abstract [en]

A picture dictionary gives a figurative stimulus and makes learning an interactive game. But the dictionary is not just for children, they are also made for young people and adults. They can tell stories and fairytales in an amusing way, they can even retell history. Their purpose is only decided by their creator. This report is about the creation of a dictionary with pictures. The purpose of this dictionary is to educate young people about the objects we encounter in our everyday life; anything you can encounter is in this dictionary. The company that is in charge for this dictionary is Euroway Media Business AB, they usually work with websites for other companies but they feel like expanding their ground and knowledge. The dictionary will be made into an application, in a later project, which eventually will be integrated on a website – that is currently under construction. One thing to keep in mind when designing a dictionary is to have a main theme throughout the project, go through a lot of surveys to keep on track and finally – be creative. Different kinds of methods were used – for example a poll and a persona – during the project to collect data, examine the target group and evaluate the dictionary. The result became a well structured dictionary with enough pictures and categories to be educational. It became pure graphic, appealing and highlights the dictionaries content.

Europa från två horizonter: En komparativ studie av två länders EU bevakning2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The study examines the European Union coverage in a Swedish and a Romanian newspaper during three different weeks. The aim is to answer the question of how the different countries portray EU and what quality there is on the information the readers or users receive from the papers. How the media portrays the European Union is an important topic to study when it comes to democracy. The European Union makes a lot of national decisions and controls a lot of our daily politics so it is important that the people get relevant and good information.

Sweden joined the European Union in 1995 after a referendum where only 52, 3 percent of the Swedish population wanted to join and then only if the European Union acknowledged Sweden’s wish to remain neutral. Romania’s on the other hand joined the European Union in 2007 after long negotiations. The country had to improve a lot of social and economical problems before they were aloud to join. When they finally did join the European Union together with Bulgaria they did so under the strict conditions that they would fight the corruption and other problems harder.

The theories we used was: normative theory, media effect theories, framing, medialogic, gatekeeping and europeaness. The previous studies we were inspired by was Vanni Tjenströms “Europa Norrifrån” (2001), Ulf Wallin´s “ Vad vi fick veta” (1994) and Göran Palm´s “I marknadens och nationens namn” (2002).

With this study we could discover that the Swedes view the European Union mostly like a profit organization and the economical part of the membership was very important. The view the Swedes had of themselves was a very positive one. They thought that their living standards were much better than that of other citizens in other countries in the EU. The Romanian people see the union more like a hope for the future but they see themselves as failures.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to improve IKEA´s understanding of how their target group of 12 to 18 years old boys and girls thinks when they visit the showrooms in the department stores. What make them enter the showrooms? Is it the colours, the furniture or the whole concept? How are they inspired to furnish their own room? Do they get ideas from the showrooms or are they looking for a specific furniture? These types of questions have increased young people´s interest for design and decoration over the last decade. It transpires with help from an article written by Vittorio Girotto and Michel Gonzalez how children are influenced in an early age by their own temperament and their natural surroundings. Children reasons and acts according to what they believe adults would have done in a similar situation. The methods that have been used during this project are interviews, surveys, observations, hypothetical persona, persona and ABL (IKEA´s own method). ABL in English stands for “Activity”, “Need” and “Solution”. With help from these methods and articles shows that it is the parents who have the greatest influence on children and youths how they choose to furnish and decorate their room. In the result of this report it is shown what youths think of the existing showrooms and even suggestions how the target group could interact with the showrooms. Suggestion for a “Theme” have been created with help from persona models, observations and interviews based on the target groups own answers. Here you can read what youths think of the existing showrooms, what is missing and what can be improved.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how Swedish newspapers framed the campaign Earth Hour. Did media encourage their audience to join in and how did they create a sense of togetherness regarding the campaign?

The theories connected to the study are media logic, media events, identity and the media, collective togetherness, symbolic interactionism and discourse. The method used was a qualitative discourse analysis. We analysed three Swedish newspapers: Aftonbladet, Barometern and Svenska Dagbladet. We analysed fifteen different texts ranging from regular news articles to columns.

The results showed that Earth Hour continuously is presented as either a way to save the environment or as a useless stunt that people participate in to quiet their guilty conscience. Whether the text in question is positive or not regarding Earth Hour the message is always about urging the audience to act by participating or take an active choice to keep the light on and thereby not comply with the campaign. The results also showed that there are three different types of characters represented in the texts that serve as a way to create togetherness and awareness regarding the Earth Hour campaign. These three characters are the enthusiast, the prophet of doom and the sceptic. More than one of them is never represented in the same text and their main purpose is to symbolise the message that the text has. Continuously the characters give you a view of how to be a participant or a non-participant. These are the two sides you are given, there is nothing in between. By only showing one side of the discussion about the campaign the news papers were creating an "us" versus "them" kind of mentality where everything but "us" were considered wrong or simply ignored.

    Abstract [en]

There is an ongoing reorganization within media industries today as they adapt to new and changing demands - the environment is changing fast and the organizations with it. The development of new technology is contributing to new forms of media distribution in the present media industry. The structure of media organizations is getting flatter and the co-workers are getting a new and bigger role. All this is bringing new challenges for the leaders of the organization. Caught in the middle of these new structures is the middle manager who now is facing different demands from all sides. This thesis investigates how the middle manager in media organizations is handling these new and changing demands. Questions have been raised on how the role of middle manager will develop when the co-worker is getting a bigger role and the structures are getting flatter and this thesis investigates the future roll of middle managers. The method that has been used is qualitative interviews with middle managers at different positions and in different organizations. The focus of the interviews has been on the changing surrounding environments for the organizations, the new technology, the new role of co-workers, and their experiences of middle management in media organizations. My conclusions are that the middle manager will be continuously required in the future. They face many new demands, but these can be handled by good communication but also thru experience as well as adaptableness and distinctness. When co-workers are assigned a new role, where they will be either multi-journalists or specialists, it is of most importance for the middle manager to recruit the right people to the organization. It is also of importance that the middle manager adapts the management to the specific requirements of the individual co-worker, and hence that the co-worker is allowed to be more involved in the leadership process. Furthermore I think that the middle management in media organizations will develop into a different and new role in the future, and as such be more operative. The middle manager will operate more like a team-leader or a coach and this can only happen if the administrative work assigned elsewhere.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about the networkfilesystem protocols SMB/CIFS, SMB2 and NFSv3. The work is based on the article ”A New Network File System is Born: Comparison of SMB2, CIFS, and NFS” which is written by Steven M. French at IBM, Samba Team. In the article there are no performance tests, we found it relevant to do performance tests to see which networkfilesystem protocol was the fastest with different filesizes in a Windows client environment. These tests were performed between two Dell PowerEdge 2900 servers where one of them was acting client and the other one fileserver. The tests were done once without network latency and once with. This resulted in that we got differences in how fast the protocols were with and without network latency.

Motivation inom television: En undersökning om hur chefer motiverar sina medarbetare2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Co-workers become more and more responsible for the work they do, which changes the way leaders have to lead their staff. How the leaders in organizations work affect the co-workers' efficiency. The main purpose of this survey is to investigate how leaders in television networks work to motivate their co-workers. To do so, I used qualitative methods by interviewing four leaders and four co-workers in television networks. I have used a theoretical frame of reference based on communication, leadership and motivation. The empirical results of the interviews are presented in different themes and I separated the answers from the leaders and the answers from the co-workers in order to give the reader a good overview. Then I drew parallels from the empirical and theoretical data in my analysis by setting the result from the interviews in relation to the different theories. It emerged that both leaders, coworkers and the theory thought that a leader should be democratic and see every single coworker. The leader should take time to have conversations with every co-worker and the staff should take more responsibility to enjoy work. Media organizations needs to be aware of the dynamic context they are in, in order to keep up with changes. This is what I stress in my analysis.

My conclusion of this survey is that the leaders that I interviewed care more about the staff then the organization's budget. They motivate them by giving them more responsibility, having an open and continual communication and by treating everyone in the staff the same. It is also important that it exist a trust between leaders and co-workers in the organization.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Many international companies have expatriates as a result of increased globalisation and international competition. The organisations must remember to acknowledge the cross-cultural adjustment that is needed to avoid cultural shock. Values and signals that appear to be perfectly normal in the home country can be perceived differently abroad. To minimize the effects of cultural differences it is appropriate that the companies offer expatriate support and training before, during and after the assignments. An interview with a consulting company that specializes in expatriate training, gives insight into what the possibilities for support and training are. We have through several interviews established what strategies three Swedish companies have when it comes to dealing with expatriates. They all found intercultural communication important but they would not always provide training. The companies sometimes expected, depending on the expatriate’s profession and starting position, that prior knowledge would help the expatriate prepare for him or herself, both at the beginning and the end of the assignment. In conclusion we have prepared a short list of suggestions for companies with expatriates.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to study how four swedish lifestyle magazines: Veckorevyn and Cosmopolitan for women, King and Café for men, represent three groups of people and how often these people appear in the magazines. These groups are HBT, homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals, disabled and immigrants. The years we studied were 2007 and 2008.

Our main questions were: How often do the three groups appear in the four magazines? How are the groups represented? In order to answer these questions we used a qualitative analysis. We used tools from semiotics, narratology and discourse. We also used a quantitative analysis in order to find out how often the groups appeared.

We based our study on theories about representation, stereotypes, social construction, identity and masculinity. We chose these theories because the magazines used this to present their stories about the groups, in a social constructed world. These theories helped us to analyze our results and gave a deeper meaning to our conclusions.

Our results showed that all groups appear very little in the magazines. We found that all groups except for immigrants are stereotyped in well-known patterns. Disabled persons are often represented as heroes. We also found that HBT- persons often are stereotyped and appear in articles where sex and relationships is the main subject. Many of the immigrants are famous and they are portrayed as themselves and as “one of us”.

Vill du ha en snigel på ögat?: En kvantitativ undersökning om svensk public service-televisions innehåll över 34 års tid.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our study shows if and how Swedish public service television has changed its content from the time when SVT had monopoly until this day when the competition is greater than ever. We got an insight in what has been presented to the audience by studying TV schedules from 1975 to 2009. The study examines four weeks during the years when the two main channels SVT1 and SVT2 have been broadcasting. One week each of these following years have been examined: 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2009. These years have been chosen to get an insight in what content the TV schedules presented before and after SVT got competition in the Swedish TV market. A total of 28 days and 56 TV schedules have been examined. This was done with a quantitative analysis and with an own model of ten categories that has helped us to sort the TV shows based on their content.

Even though it was not a great difference, the result shows that the percentage of news has decreased since 1975. But it was not possible to see if the TV shows that replaced the news in the TV schedule was of an entertaining kind. The study also shows that a new kind of TV shows have taken a large spot in the schedules. Nowadays it is common that a TV show mix different kind of categories during its broadcasting time. One example is Gomorron Sverige. Furthermore we have seen that live debates take a large place in the TV schedules in 2009, especially during the day time. Besides that, the sizes of the categories have been pretty even during the 34 years. SVT has not made any significant changes since the monopoly was broken and the competition became a reality.

We have also noticed that the broadcasting time has increased a lot since 1975. It is particularly obvious in the day time where there many years ago were no broadcasting at all. Our main purpose with the study was to examine if there is less news today in favour of TV shows of a more entertaining kind.

Två nyladdade batterier och en morotskaka: - Konsten att motivera sig själv som chef2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When we started this study we quickly saw that almost all the previous research that we find was focused and concentrated on the fact that the employees should be motivated. The research also presents a top-down perspective which means from the head to the employee. A Swedish newspaper wrote in an article that 1/3 of all Swedish heads can’t motivate their employers. A Swedish internet platform discusses this and says that heads need to be motivated to be able to motivate people around himself. So with this report we want to turn and reverse the perspective and pay focus on management and leadership. What makes a manager and leader justified and what is it that makes him or her strive to get in the position he or she has and what part has the employees in the heads motivation. The purpose with this study is to find out how important it is with a motivated head and what factors that really motivate himself, we also want to find out how the employees help with the motivation to his head. The theory’s we have used under this study is a couple of motivations theories from Abraham Maslow and Frederick Herzberg. We have also theories about what motivation is and describes intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Another theory in this assignment is the communication between the head and the employees, in other words feedback. This study has used a qualitative research method with the direction to the hermeneutics researcher’s way. We have also used a deductive way, in other words we have looked in to the theory first to get a deeper understanding and find out what we really want to study. We have used interviews to collect information for this study. Five organizations have been interviewed and from every organization one head and one employer has been interviewed. Why we did this is because we wanted to get two perspective from the organizations. With this study we have concluded that feedback is a very important source to build up and strength the persons own motivation. We have also concluded that open minded and continual feedback promotes motivation, both with the head and the employees. The employees also help a lot with motivating his head and have a great understanding for his head’s needs.

Inte för allt smör i Småland- men för det godaste: "Småland"- Exklusivt smörkrus för restaurangverksamhet2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this survey is to figure out which software based remote access solution that fits a smaller company, hence they have less economy assets than a larger company they need to be more thorough with their products of choice. The work is performed with literature studies and a survey of a dozen smaller companies, and also a laboratory environment where properties of the different remote access solutions are performed.

This area was chosen because the subject of remote access scarcely was treated during our education, and become engrossed in this area.

The result shows what the companies consider to be the most important properties with a remote access and also the products results from the tests. Also the values that occurred during testing in a laboratory environment will be presented in the results. The combined results will then show which software-based solution that is best suited for a small company.

"Ett lugnt hörn när det är kaos i världen": en studie om varför barnprogrammet Bolibompa ser ut som det gör under och dagarna efter en katastrof2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study intends to examine why the Swedish children’s programme Bolibompa is produced the way it is during a larger catastrophe. Our intention was to find out how the editorial staff, in the children’s department in the public service television of Sweden (SVT),was handling the Estonia disaster, the September 11 attacks and the Asian Tsunami. To accomplish that, we first had to find out how the children’s programme looked during these catastrophes and also understand how the editorial staff was working with children’s programme during ordinary days.

To achieve our purpose we have been interviewing five persons from SVT, who was involved in producing the children’s programme during these three catastrophes. The method we used was qualitative research interview and theories of socialisation, media effects, social responsibility and theories of rhetoric mass media guided our study.

We found out that the editorial staff was producing the children’s programme differently during each catastrophe. When the Estonia disaster occurred, the children’s programme was delayed because of extended news. Next to the children’s programme a host was talking directly to the children trying to explain the accident. The day after the September 11 attacks the host of the children’s programme was discussing the catastrophe with invited guests in the TV studio. The editorial staff thought that many children were frightened at the time and that explains why they decided to keep a conversation. During the Asian Tsunami, SVT was broadcasting a Christmas special, and the children’s programmes weren’t changed at all, mostly because a break in the Christmas series would cause a lot of problems.

Anonymitetstjänster - Vad är kostnaden för att uppnå anonymitet på Internet2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Inter-organisatorisk kommunikationssäkerhet: En fallstudie av informationssäkerhetsarbetet runt e-recept2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Title: Strategic communication in the insurance, a case study of Svenska Sjö marketing communications

Level: BA Thesis in Media and Communication Studies For companies that offer equal products, where it is difficult for the consumer to see the different between the products or services, it is important to have good marketing communication skills, which creates associations with the brand as allow consumers perceive brands as being more different than those really is. The reason I have chosen this area is that I have personal experience of the insurance branch and that I would like to look deeper at how a small insurance company works with its communications. The aim of this thesis is to see how a small insurance company working with marketing communications, and through these studies try with suggestions on what can help a small insurance company to become more well know by consumers. I have chosen to only study a Swedish, small insurance company, that only have casualty insurance, and I have chosen to target me on how a small insurance company work with marketing communication, and how the work whit positioning looks. I have chosen to do a qualitative study, where I interviewed four different people from the insurance company that works with marketing. I have then analyzed the result on the basis of theories about communications, positioning and PR that I presented in the theory chapter. I have been using the theories which I have chosen to my study, and through the collected empirics, whom I analyzed, come up whit some proposals that could help a little insurance company like Svenska Sjö to get its brand better known. In the empirical investigation, I have been able to identify some associations that Svenska Sjö want to associate to, and based on theories, I have come with suggestions on how to improve the work whit the positioning and the marketing communication. These suggestions are about how you can use the associations in the marketing communication, and thus raise awareness of Svenska Sjö and get the company message out to the consumers.

    Abstract [sv]

This report discusses the development of a web-based e-commerce solution where new technologies for development are applied. Different techniques for creating a richer and more interactive user interface are applied.

How do you develop an e-commerce website with today’s modern techniques? Which technologies are best suited? Questions like these are the basis for this graduation work and we have been given an assignment by a company called Mil Tech situated in Västerås, to develop an e-commerce website with card-payment and also with an administration interface.

The purpose with this graduation work is in part to find out how you develop an e-commerce website with today’s modern technologies, which technologies are best suited for the task and to adapt the site according to the customers wishes and demands. This will be done by developing an application where the customer can handle products and update the websites information and appearance. A user shall be able to register and carry out a purchase.

The application is developed in ASP.NET 2.0 with the developing language C-Sharp (C#). This is a relatively new technique with high security and performance, and also that it has good compatibility with the powerful database-handler MS SQL Server 2005. In addition to C# the application also uses ASP.NET AJAX Extensions.

Our developing environment is made up of Visual Studio 2005 Professional with version handling through Subversion and database handling through MS SQL Server 2005 Express and MS SQL Server Management studio Express.

To get the information we need for the project, the main source will be the Internet, because we need current information and today literature isn’t always up to date.

Preparations we did before developing were to gather information about e-commerce with card-payment, and going through the customers wishes and demands.

The entire website except the administration is language-dependent and can be viewed in three different languages, Swedish, English and German.

Relationsmarknadskommunikation: En undersökning som fokuserar på de lokala relationerna i en globaliserad värld2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Relationship marketing is an important part of the new view of communication strategies. The theories around this subject has a general and global perspective on how to manage relations and communication problems. But somehow the local perspective is forgotten. In this thesis we have focused on the local market and which demands it has on the work with relationship management. The purpose of this thesis is to find out how relationship marketing can contribute to create a high valued brand on a local market. In this case the local news and entertainment site Vibb Kalmar. The thesis was carried out by intervening (qualitative method) individuals on three different levels in the field of relationship marketing. One of the most respected professor in the field of relationship marketing. We have also two different consulting-firms and one client each from both of the firms. All located in Kalmar. We have used a theoretical frame of reference based on relationship marketing, service marketing, brand management and market communication. We compared the literature with the collected empirical data to come up with our own conclusions about local relationship marketing. The conclusion shows that some aspects become more important on a local market. Persons behind the brand are very important. The company needs to be active in their network. It´s important to be a part of the community and take their responsibility to be a good citizen. It also gives recommendations on how a local news and entertainment site should work with relationship marketing.

Problemet med Sverigedemokraterna: En studie i hur Sverigedemokraterna representeras i två svenska tidningar2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how the political party Sweden Democrats is represented in two Swedish newspapers. The study included a national newspaper and a local newspaper, Aftonbladet and Blekinge Läns Tidning.

We studied 35 articles from both papers, from 2005 and from 2009. We analyzed the texts using the linguist Norman Faircloughs (1995) method for discourse analysis. Based on his theories, we created our own model to examine the texts. Our model primarily focused on representation.

The study was conducted at a time when Sweden Democrats was given much support in opinion polls and knocked on the door to the Swedish Parliament.

The study showed that Sweden Democrats in both newspapers, primarily by descriptions, the choice of interviewees, etc., often are represented as racists. Another phenomenon is that SD in a number of texts often are linked with suspicion and assigned with a hidden agenda. In contrary, we have also found examples of articles that portray SD as any other party in the political spectrum, especially in the articles published in 2009.

Our study aimed to discuss and also showed that here are several complicated problems, both legally and ethically, when dealing with, and reporting about Sweden Democrats.
