    Abstract [en]

Do teachers’ expectations of their pupils become a part in the judgement of which grade a pupil will receive in the end?

Several of the polical parties in Sweden have recently been argueing that teachers should be able to give pupils a grade in how they behave in school. Several newspapers also have reported that pupils today have gotten lower results for the last few years and more pupils do not get approved in all subjects. Because many of the studies about pupils results focus on the pupils’ skills, I deciced to focus on the teachers part in how a pupil get a better grade or not.

In the study I have been looking at a small community in the south of Sweden. I have sent out a form that teachers in the community’s high schools have been asked to answer. During the study I have also gone to these three schools and done four classroom observations at every school. There I have looked at the environment, how the teacher works and how the pupils react on the teacher’s way of behaving and vice versa.

The results of this study has shown that there are more men that choose to include a pupils beahviour when deciding which grade she should get. There is also a tendency that shows that even if teachers themselves do or do not weigh in pupils behaviour, the teachers overall think that it´s more likely that their companions do so.

Title: Varför en rädsla för alternativmedicin?

    Author: Annica Blomstrand

    Supervisor: Anne Haglund-Morrissey

The aim of this study is to investigate the process of legislation and implementation of the directive of the European Union on the food supplements, focused on member state of Sweden.

There are two questions in this study: What was the process of legislation in the period when the Directive on the food supplements became established? and How does the implementation of EU’s decision on the food supplements works in reality? In order to answer these questions, two different methods were used. One was qualitative analysis of the available text and the other one case-study (qualitative including interviews)

The conclusion is that the implementation has not been successful. The process of legislation has followed its traditional way, which in its turn did not leave so much space to the thorough implementation of the Directive. Unfortunately, this is a process that overlooks citizens and countries with different premises, affected by the decision.

    Abstract

Boundaries and frontiers are doubtless the ultimate key words in this book. District

boundaries and local boundaries have in Berlin been upgraded to international frontiers,

which in the years of the cold war turned into top-level politics. The drawing up of frontiers

had an effect on all sectors of urban life and the majority of the chapters show the

situation before and after the fall of the wall.

Case studies also describe how east-west conflicts have been brought down to the cartographic

level and examine the conversion process in the hinterland.

    Abstract [en]

My essay is fundamentally about an idea. It could even be placed in the study of the history of ideas by the fact that it could be seen as if I am trying to reflect upon how one single idea can get a strong societal and historical impact. How thoughts, visions and then inventions are constructing societies and everything that derives from them. In my text I try to illuminate and connect social theory to our social reality and by using discourse (theory) analysis I try to study central terms in the discourse of surveillance. The question which is of social psychological interest would be that of how the individual in dialectical relation to the

surrounding society is free and how he then would get inflected by this surveillance. What if the society could be looked upon as a prison or a reformatory centre, and the individual is not that free as supposed by many post modern non-structurist streams of thought? Not only do I want to illuminate but also try and come to some conclusions at the end. What consequences could the big panoptic machinery bring upon the citizens of society in which it is applied and under constant ongoing and development?

    Abstract [en]

This study was carried out in Ronneby municipality during May 2006. I chose to compare three senior schools with regards to the implementation of objective orientated directives based on the teachers understanding of the task, motivation, resources allocated and their significance for the disparity between boys’ and girls’ grades.

I carried out nine in-depth interviews: three at each senior school. From the interviews it emerged that teachers perceive objectives differently from parents and students. Teachers claim that they understand the directives but say that they lack the resources. According to those interviewed, the disparity in grades between boys and girls is due to biological factors, class affiliation and group dynamics. None of those interviewed feel that they contribute to the difference in grades.

This study should not be seen as a generalisation but rather as a preliminary study to further research within the topic area.

    Abstract [en]

Values and norms like legal security and democracy, which are some of the values in the public sphere, must be the basis for public administrations. Because of that, it is important that the organisation of public administrations allows the street-level bureaucrat to take moral considerations. In the essay I look into how the organisation of geriatric care in one local authority influences street-level bureaucrats possibilities for moral considerations.

Consequentley, the question asked in the essay is: How does the organisation of the public administration affect the street-level bureaucrats possibilities to take moral considerations in decisions ?

The street-level bureaucrat must take public administrations ethics into consideration when they meet citizens in their work, i.e. they must treat the citizen morally correct. The care of the elderly shall proceed from an individual perspective. Therefore, to fulfill this, the street-level bureaucrats need the opportunity to take the individual citizens perspective into account when taking decisions. The theoretic framework is a definition of the word ethic, the street-level bureaucrats role in public administrations, the public administrations organisation variables and Gunilla Silfverbergs proposal for ethical actions in geriatric care. Silfverbergs proposal is used to judge the organisation from the question asked in the essay and the public administrations organisation variables helped me to examine the organisation accurately without ending up on sidetracks. The goal was to examine if the organisations goals ensures opportunities for the street-level bureaucrats to take moral considerations into account and if the geriatric care investigated here enables such considerations. The essay also contains an analysis of the street-level bureaucrats autonomy. Autonomy is an important condition if street-level bureaucrats shall be able to take moral considerations into account. If geriatric care based on individual needs of the citizen should be implemented, the street-level bureaucrats need to be able to take individual decisions based on the context of the situation. This essay is a qualitative case studie.

The material analysed in the essay shows that the goals of the public administration advocate an organisation wich allows street-level bureaucrats to take moral considerations. But the goals didn´t match the organisation capabilities and the street-level bureaucrats wasn´t always able to make such considerations in their day-to-day work. The street-level bureaucrats didn´t have enough resources or enough time available to take moral considerations

    Abstract [en]

Numerous studies raise the topic of highly educated immigrants whose education and list of qualifications devalue in the context of the Swedish labour market. However, little is known of those with foreign background who enter into higher education in Sweden. Our study attempts to shed some light onto the value of higher education relative to that of a person’s ethnic background. The background material features nine in-depth interviews of foreign background academics, as well as data extracted from an extensive survey study previously carried out at Växjö University.

Initially, the quantitative data showed that students with foreign background, including Swedish-born children of immigrants, had not managed to find qualified work upon completion of studies to the same extent as their Swedish background counterparts. The individual stories given in interviews support the assumption that social capital, in the form of access to networks or membership thereof, may decide the physical location of individual careers. Those who stayed in the region were either brought up locally or had established themselves through work practice. In some respects, those who left can be considered outsiders, whose chances of finding work largely depended on their establishing themselves elsewhere. Some had managed to find qualified work beyond their own acquaintances, but only through a long period of unemployment or doing unqualified work.

When it comes to the ethnic backgrounds of the interviewed, positive and negative aspects were brought up by some, while others did not consider it relevant with respect to their own careers. However, their stories provide examples of how ethnicity works as a deciding factor on the labour market in much the same way as, for instance, class and gender. In turn, this is an indication of underlying mechanisms on the labour market that rest on social ties.

New medievalism från teori till empiri: Malteserorden som modell2008In: Internasjonal Politikk, ISSN 0020-577X, Vol. 66, no 4, p. 615-632Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the article it is argued that the discussion within political science on new medievalism has lacked empirical substance and that this concept has been used in an anecdotic and sweeping manner. Departing from the ambition to contribute to the empirical substance of new medievalism, the Sovereign Order of Malta – a medieval, but still active, catholic chivalric order – is studied inductively. Based on different empirical illustrations, four different characteristics of the Order of Malta as a (new)-medieval actor in international politics is formulated; non-territoriality, overlapping sovereignty, valuebased actorness and support of international law. These characteristics are related to the European integrationprocess, with empirical illustrations from the Lisbon treaty, since the relation between the EU and its´ member-states often is regarded as the premier example of a new medieval order. In the article it is argued that the situation in the EU match the earlier and more sweeping understanding of new medievalism, but that the situation in the EU still lacks components before it can be seen as a new medieval case in accordance with the more ambitious model based on the Order of Malta.

    Abstract [en]

In this study I wanted to examine if a missed school lunch could affect students cognitive ability. The students were in the age of 15-16 years old. Previous studies show that there is a significant connection between glucose and cognitive ability and from those I have based my theory. For this thesis a randomized experiment have been used where the participants were divided into two groups one experiment- and one control group. The experiment group was not supposed to eat anything after 10.00 am prior to the testing and the control group was permitted to eat as normal. Before the test the students answered a form about their food hab-its, school motivation and grades so I could see if their food habits could affect their grades. After that the students were tested in their cognitive ability at 13.15 pm trough a cognitive test constructed by me. The experiment didn’t show any significant difference between the ex-periment group and the control group. One interesting connection was however found be-tween the student’s food habits and their grades, students that ate more regularly had signifi-cant better grades.

    Abstract [en]

Several studies have shown that the Swedish labour market for different reasons is characterized by ethnical discrimination and that people who have another cultural background than Swedish are being excluded. Most studies done within this area have been focused on why it is harder for immigrants to enter the labour market and identifying the contributing mechanisms for this phenomenon. Instead the aim of this study was to see how the immigrants view their own cultural identity and background and how they perceive that their cultural competences are being valued when they apply for a job. To examine this, the following problematic was used: How does a person who has been brought up with both the Swedish culture and another culture look at using this as a cultural competence when they apply for a job. Two different theories were then applied to analyze the problematic, Erving Goffman´s theory about Stigma and Norbert Elias theory about the Established and the Outsiders. To carry out the study, a qualitative method with interviews was used and 8 people from 6 different cultural backgrounds participated. The results show that if the knowledge that had emerged from a persons cultural background turned out to benefit that person in his or her work situation than that person was more likely to see cultural background as a competence. Although if the condition was the opposite then there was no need to see it or to use it as a competence. Therefore cultural competence seems to be useful in specific situations and in interaction with certain people or groups of people rather than being viewed as an overall, general competence. To accentuate cultural competence also proved to be difficult due to the stereotyped conceptions about immigrants that exist in society. The conclusion of this study is that emphasizing cultural competence can sometimes benefit a person although there is always a risk that it could lead to increased stigmatization.

Alcohol consumption and student life have been connected through many years. Many people establish their drinking habits during their years as a student and drinking habits among students are therefore an extremely important topic. The aim of this study was to examine the drinking habits of students at Växjö University. The study included 98 respondents who answered a survey concerning sex, age, living status, social relations, social desirability and drinking habits. The result indicated that male students consumed more alcohol than female students. There was also a strong connection between living status and alcohol consumption, with the students who lived on Campus consuming more alcohol than those living off Campus. Overall the result of the study was supported by previous research.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines different ideas concerning problem, strategy, means and goal about development and underdevelopment in Swedish civil society organizations and Swedish governmental institutions active in the area of human rights and democracy in Uganda. This is done by first; creating a model over explainable options with the help of theories of development and underdevelopment, second; determining which theoretical perspective that SIDA and the civil society work by. The data collected consist of qualitative literature studies, analyses of policy and strategy documents dealing with development and underdevelopment.

The theoretical standpoint in the study is brought from the theory of development assistance as part of foreign policy, an area traditionally dominated by the nation, development theories and the roll of civil society. By using the analytical model we get results that show that there is a big coherence in ideas concerning the goal where the focus is poverty reduction. There are major differences concerning ideas about strategy and problem, though at majority of the actors declare both internal and external factors to underdevelopment. The leading idea about strategy is complementary implementations like organization of individuals, self-trust and

spiritual development, ideas where civil society is represented. There are several ideas of means represented in both SIDA and the civil society but SIDA differs on additional ideas such as privatization and recommendations of governmental regulations.

Reintegration of Female Child Soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo: a Journey from a Deprived Childhood2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The severe situation of female child soldiers worldwide continues, and the harsh reality they stand in front of once returning back to their communities is often concealed. By the time former female child soldiers begin their journey back to civilian life and a life of dignity, they face various difficulties. Females are often exposed to marginalisation, stigmatisation, discrimination and isolation, and their livelihood and safety tend to be jeopardised. Females are often disregarded and are desperately fighting a battle to become accepted and to receive needed assistance. Since gender roles and gender identities vary around the world and between regions, communities tend to treat females and males very differently. Expectations of females vary depending on structures in communities and therefore communities tend to treat females in a certain way. This study seeks to explore national reintegration strategies in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and how the gap between these strategies and traditional cultural and social expectations of females affect reintegration processes in the country. The complex situation of female child soldiers in the DRC in terms of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR), with particular focus on reintegration is addressed in this thesis.

The objective of this study is to analyse to what extent national reintegration strategies in the DRC are adapted to meet the needs of females and their home community. The findings indicate that the national program of DDR in the DRC, the PNDDR, is not aligned with existing cultural and social expectations of females, which have major consequences in reintegration processes. The findings demonstrate that there are many systems which are vital and have to be considered for reintegration to be effective. These systems have to be considered by the PNDDR on a broader level since there are shortcomings in these systems. It is significant to have knowledge about females to be able to streamline DDR processes and once designing programs of DDR. If reintegration of females is unsuccessful, this has negative effects for peace. This study draws on qualitative approaches and a desk study is performed. A created analytical framework taking surrounding environments, child development and social and cultural components into account is used.

for the discussion lies also an thorough presentation of the theory behind integrated communication.

The results show that integrated communication in practice is used on an abstract rather than concrete

level, and that the barriers that stand in front of a concrete implementation can be concluded within four

categories: territory, business economical system, measurability and new media. The study also shows how

these barriers can be turned into possibilities to make integrated communications work better.

The conclusion is that in order to conform theory according to the presumptions of reality, an thus make a

practical application of the theory possible, one should use the term integrated brand instead of integrated

communications. This change of term should simplify the process of establishing the integrated perspective

on board level and then the implementation of the concept throughout the organization.

Key terms: Communication, Public Relations, Market Communication, the Model of Convergence, Integrated

Communication, synergy, identity, organizational culture, brand, brand plan, Return of Investment,

    Return on Communications, integrated brand.

Aid as a Path on the Muddled Road Toward Democratization?: A quantitative multiple case study on the impact of aid on the democratization process in Sub Saharan Africa2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the problematic question of aid as a helping hand to states that are in the process of developing democracy. It focuses on the Sub Saharan African region as a critical case, and furthermore upon the aid contributions made by the European Union during the time period of 1996-2006. The main ambition is to explore the real effect of aid on the democratic process, but also to explore other variables that might have effect. The method used is regression analysing of a database called The Quality of Government database Cross – Section Time-Series May 2008. The database has later been modified to suit my specific needs and aid has been recoded. This thesis is meant to be a theory testing study, and the theories tested will be related to the independent variables such as aid as a democratic helping hand as well as theories of corruption, political participation and military rule in the search for democracy.

Democratic Accountability in a System of Global Governance: The case of the European Union: A sheer thought of utopia or a possible outcome?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This thesis deals with the democratic accountability question within systems of global governance, but focuses on the European Union. The main ambition has been to explore and give an account for the current situation, and lack of accountability as a part of the European Union democratic deficit. It will also stress some of the solutions proposed. In order to fulfil this I have used classic liberal democracy theory and multi level governance theory. The thesis defines the concept of accountability as to be held accountable to a constituency or a superior official and the relationship between them can take many different shapes. Several factors are identified as threats to accountability such as many tiers of governance, no clearly defined responsibilities and the lack of elected politicians on a level of global governance. By establishing the EU as a government of multi level governance and a bearer of democratic values, problems with accountability and hence legitimacy will be presented in relation to the EU:s sui generis features and unique composition. The thesis concludes that even though a union with democratic accountability is highly desired, it is not feasible that it will happen in the nearest future, hence as the situation is today with scattered responsibilities and an invisibility within the non elected institutions, accountability remains a utopia for coming generations to implement.

Key Words: accountability, the EU, democracy, legitimacy, responsibility, global governance, multi level governance, democracy theory.

Skolan mitt i förorten: - fyra studier om skola, segregation, integration och multikulturalism2001Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is first to bring into focus and analyze how relations between schools and the local community are affected when negative economic developments in combination with stigmatizing public representations or portrayals segregate the area. The second aim is to lift up and analyze what role schools are expected to, and actually do, play when an area with a large proportion of immigrants and socially marginalized residents is to be integrated via a set of political-ideological proclamations and concrete efforts. The empirical material that I analyze in the dissertation has been collected in the following districts of Stockholm: Jordbro, Rinkeby, Tensta, and Husby. The heart of the dissertation comprises of four independent studies (chapters 5-8), as well as an introductory section (chapters 1-4), in which the dissertation's background factors, theoretical and methodological framework, and central concepts (segregation and integration) are delineated. Chapter 9 comprises of a concluding discussion of the central findings of the dissertation. My primary theoretical source of inspiration is the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's way of looking at the relations between individuals and structures. Against the background of his work I contend that it is first when positions, lived experiences, and representations are placed in relation to each other in a specific context - a field - that we can see the complexity that makes an explanation possible of why and how segregation of areas with high proportions of immigrants and their schools can be carried out and maintained. This is the framework that I operationalize in my dissertation. The role in integration that schools are officially expected to play in the local community, and that is accepted as legitimate and worth pursuing by the leadership in schools has, for the most part been unsuccessful. In some respects it never really started. The reason for this is the way that the negative socio-economic conditions and representations have impacted the relations between various actors in the schools and local communities. I have also been able to show that when these relations work relatively well, there can be positive benefits for both the school and its socio-economically deprived, predominantly immigrant catchment area. The positive effects for the schools are marked, with regard to reputation, status, an improved economic situation, pedagogic development, and higher grades among the students. The positive benefits for the local community come primarily in the form of higher status and reputation.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate if reconciliation between former war-enemies and ethnic groups (Muslims, Croats and Serbs) in Bosnia and Hercegovina is possible today. Reconciliation between these groups is necessary for the development of the state and sustainable peace. In order to fulfil the aim I have applied qualitative conversation interviews together with qualitative literature study.

In this research I have studied the three largest parties (SDA, HDZ and SDS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Conversation interviews were made with two representatives of each party. The reconciliation theory and the recommendations that the theory advocates were used in the study. The recommendations were also used to create interview questions that gave me relevant empirical data from the interviews. The interview data with the high representatives of these political parties led to a valid result.

The conclusions show that reconciliation between these three ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not possible today. Huge political, economical and social changes and improvements are necessary. All three classes, top-level, middle-range and grassroots, must get involved in the process if reconciliation is to be possible.

    Abstract [en]

Croatia became an independent country 1991 and has since then strived to reach a democracy level, which can lead to membership of the European Union. The purpose of this essay is on the basis of consolidate democratic perspective to illustrate Croatia’s democratic development.

In order to fulfil the aim, I have applied a qualitative text analysis technique. Through analysis of books and documents, data was collected to accommodate a valid result. I have used consolidated democracy, with its five areas (political, civil, economic, legal and bureaucratic), as my theoretical framework to the data, to provide answers and develop an analysis.

The conclusions show that the consolidate democracy in Croatia has developed a lot since the independence, and Croatia is on its good way to turn into a democratic state like other West-European countries. Croatia has developed and is still developing their political, civil, economic, legal and bureaucratic areas. A good sign of their democratic development is that Croatia received status as a candidate country in June 2005 for European Union, which shows that Croatia is on the way to complete its transition to consolidated democracy.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The aim with this essay has been to investigate if Sweden’s attitude against the European Union has changed expressed in the statement of government policies, during the years 1988-1998. In the prolongation I want to see if the policies can be seen as examples of agenda-setting.

My comprehensive objective is: In which way is the change of the Swedish attitude towards the European Union expressed in the statement of government policies during 1988-1998 shown?

My other objectives are: In which ways describes the statements the integrations process in Europe generally?

In which ways does the integrations process influences Sweden in generally?

In which ways does the integrations process influences Sweden’s relations against the European Union?

I have used qualitative text analysis as method in my essay to find the answers to the questions. I have classified a number of opinions, found in the policies, summarized under my three objectives.

The result of my essay was shown that the changed not can be found in the policies and they are examples of agenda-setting. Decisions and public opinions take places in other ways than in the statements of government policies.

Keywords: The European Union, the statement of government policies, the swedish EU-membership and agenda-setting.

Medias roll i valkampanjer: En studie av den franska presidentvalskampanjen 20072009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1970s voting behaviour has changed. Party identification and class voting has declined. As the electorate becomes more volatile, campaign strategy and party image becomes essential. Political communication and mass media now play an important role in election campaigns. Therefore, researchers take an interest in the impact of media on public opinion. The agenda-setting theory maintains that media influence what voters think about and that there is a link between media coverage and voting intentions.

This minor thesis focuses on the early election campaign prior to the French presidential election in 2007. For the first time, the socialist party organised a primary election in order to nominate their candidate. The aim is to study if media has an impact on public opinion in election campaigns. To reach the aim, I posed the two following research questions: Did the primary election of the socialist party result in higher media coverage of the party than of other political parties? If the media favoured the socialist party during this time, did this have an impact on the voting intentions for the socialist candidate Ségolène Royal?

In order to reach the aim and answer the questions, I performed a quantitative study. I measured the media coverage of the different political parties in the newspapers during the socialist primary campaign, to find out if the socialist party was favoured by the media. The primary source of information was the two French newspapers Le Monde and Le Figaro, complemented by opinion polls performed by the institute Ipsos.

The results show that the socialist party was privileged by the press coverage prior to the presidential election. The newspapers wrote more and longer articles about the socialist party than of any other political party at the time of this study. At the same time, voting intentions for Ségolène Royal increased. The media exposure seems to have had a short effect on the public opinion in favour of the socialist candidate. By the results of this study, I conclude that the socialist party was able to influence the agenda-setting in the media by organizing primary elections. I find support for the hypothesis that media coverage during an election campaign has an effect on public opinion.

Samverkan över institutionella gränser: En studie om privatoffentlig krishantering i Kronobergs län2008Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the conditions for public and privatepartnership (PPP) regarding civil crisesmanagement in the region of Kronoberg and further explain the possibilities and obstacles that can arise from such a partnership.

The questions of this study are:

    · Which principles constitute todays crisesmanagementsystem?

    · Which factors favour a public private partnership in crisesmanagement?

    · Which possibilities and obstacles can arise from a PPP in crisesmanagement?

    · How are the PPP constructed in crisesmanagement in the region of Kronoberg in the areas regarding electrical energy and telecommunication?

Field study interviews have been used as method to gather the empirical data. When applying the theoretical framework on the empirical material the main conclusion is that PPP in crisesmangement are predominantly positive for all parties concerned. The possibilities that arise with PPP in crisesmanagement overshadow the obstacles by numbers.

Psykisk ohälsa i arbetslivet: Varför är exempelvis undersköterskor ofta sjukskrivna på grund av psykisk ohälsa2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Sammanfattning

    Kandidatuppsats, fördjupning i sociologi

Författare: Rojin Coskun & Izabella Kiraly

    Handledare: Per Dannefjord

    Examinator: Sven Hort

Biskopshagen - en utvärdering av projektorganisationen2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    1. Inledning

I samarbetet ingår tre huvudaktörer:

    2. Hur har projektorganisationen fungerat i etapp 1 samt 2?

    3. Har byggherrarnas mål uppfyllts?

Maskulinitet i media: En studie av maskulin framställning i svensk TV-reklam2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Heliga, manliga enfald: En studie av mångfald i svensk medierad offentlighet2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Underkänd på grund av ideologi?: En studie om lärares attityder till demokrativärden2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitude of teachers regarding including democratic behaviour when grading students in social science. The purpose is also to investigate whether the teachers consider there to be a conflict between the right of freedom of speech and the democratic values that the school is supposed to make sure the students have when they graduate. The study also investigates the problems political decisions encounters when going from theory to reality.

The theory of Ulf Petäjä on why the freedom of speechs is important, Robert Dahls theory about the democratic process and Anders Sannerstedts theory about converting political decisions to reality is what this study is based on.

The study was carried out at three different schools; Teleborg Centrum, Växjö, Dackeskolan, Tingsryd and Centralskolan, Virserum ranging from the spring of 2006 and the spring of 2007. The method used except from litterature studies was interviews with active teachers.

This study shows that teachers don’t think it’s acceptable to grade students based on their political ideology. It also shows that most teachers doen’t consider there to be a dilemma between the shools democratic values and the freedom of speech. What goes on in the class room seems to be shaped more by the local school standards and the teachers themselves than by the political documents that the education is supposed to be based on.
