    Abstract [en]

    It’s reasonable to assume that every company that’s involved in production wants to improve their production efficiency. One way of doing this is to find ways of cutting costs, e.g. through using fewer resources, fewer personnel or utilizing the existing production systems in a more cost effective way. This thesis looks at ways of improving production efficiency by having more cost effective maintenance and better cooperation and quality between maintenance, production, and management. The empirical data was collected through interviews, observations, surveys, and through existing documentation from the company. This combined with the literature studied during this course is the basis for our research. Our analysis consists of three parts. In the first part we analyzed the current situation of the case company in terms of three topics; the corporation, communication, and maintenance and production. In the second part we discuss these three topics from the viewpoint and philosophy of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and finally in the third part we used and applied the methods and tools, suggested in TPM, in their current work environment and subsequently applied the concept of TPM in the case company. By conducting this research we hope that the company will get new ideas of how to identify and improve their current structure and production, and we also hope that the applied and suggested model of TPM will help and inspire other companies within the same branch of production to do the same.

    The demands concerning short lead-times and the ability to provide engineer to order services has become essential parts of a company's competitiveness. The customers are no longer considered to be an anonymous mass. They are treated like individuals with individual tastes and values. Fast deliveries of standardized products are no longer sufficient. In many cases fast deliveries of one of a kind products are demanded. A requirement in order to be able to offer the customers short delivery times is that the company has resources with high efficiency. This diploma work has as its objective to investigate within which of the areas: operations, planning and production layout, in an engineer to order company that has the relatively lowest efficiency. The model created in order to fulfil this objective is based upon the actual and the optimal performance of the mentioned working areas. The model, which has been created, is useful in order to map, based upon historical production data, the weak areas within a production system.

    Abstract [en]

    The final thesis has been performed in co-operation with Karlson Husindustrier in Åseda, approxm. 45 km north from Växjö. The purpose with the study was to investigate different options concerning purchase and warehousing of building timber. The emphasis has been to evaluate whether a changeover to purchase building lumber from a so-called distribution warehouse, offered by Södra, can be a profitable alternative or not. Can reduced delivery times and possibility of getting more differentiated deliveries lead to reduced stock levels and costs of warehousing, in spite of increased costs of purchase? The result of the investigation shows that a conversion to purchasing building lumber from Södras distribution warehouse would result in marginal possibilities of reducing the stock levels and warehousing costs. The main reason is lack of planning in advance regarding coming needs of material. When Södra lower their prices and the planning of coming needs improves at KarlsonHus the question of this thesis might be interesting to bring up to discussion again.

    Abstract [en]

    This is a report that compare the accuracy of bucking-to-length for processor and single grip harvester. In the 1990s single grip harvesters have more and more replaced two grip harvesters and dprocessors at felling. The work was carried out for Vida Timber in Vislanda. The background of this survey is the observation that the thick logs often are not cut according to the ordered lengths. In order to map the probelm a survey of measurements has been carried out for the different machines. This study involves three Rottne SMV processor and one Timberjack 1270 C harvester. The results verify the fact that the processors have a better accuracy in bucking-to-length than the harvester. It has been noticeable for all the processors in this survey that the accuracy of buckin is better for the subsequent logs than for the butt loggs. The study underlines the importance of the "human factor"; the driver´s accuracy at calibration and adjustments of the machine is decisive for the accuracy of measurement. The economical calculation based on teh waste of timber due to incorrect measurement reveal that this problem annually costs the wood owners and Vida Timber large amount of money.

    Abstract [en]

    This diplomawork has been made at Faurecia Exhaust Systems AB. The company is located in Torsås and manufactures complete exhaust systems, branch pipes and catalysts for the automotive industry. The task was to simulate the further developed production of the pipes that are part of the branch pipes. It was mainly two problems that Faurecia wanted solutions to. The first was to find out, with the help of the simulation results, in which months the company needs additional bending centres to manage the increased demand on pipes. The simulations has been carried out on a monthly basis from June –03 till April –04. The capacity results that has been received show that Faurecia must increase the number of bending centres from one to two in October. In December three bending centres are needed to manage to produce the demand, and from February it takes four. In March there is a remarkable increase in the demand, and Faurecia will need six bending centres. In April they will need to use seven bending centres. In my opinion Faurecia should lower the sizes of the batches and the intermediate storage during those months where they have a surplus capacity. During the months when the company will have under capacity, they should examine whether an increase of batch sizes and intermediate storage can increase productivity to the extent that further bending centres wont be necessary. The most important thing is to make sure that the demand can be supplied.

    Abstract [en]

    The report is based on how the logistical flow is affected by the planning environment in a manufacturing company, specially how the order- and material flow should be planned. The report is performed in two different planning environments and material handling systems. A model is created, which shows that the production planning is the link between the order handling and the material handling. To make the manufacturing process run smoothly the main focus must be at the supported function to the prouction planning, which are preparation to manufacturing and front end. This two functions demands carefully structured organization and allocation of responsibility. The model is based on a pull-system. We base this upon advantages such as minimized storages, which reduces tied up capital within the company. Other benefits are decreased transports and an effective information flow.
