    Abstract [sv]

Iron Maiden, Coleridge, and the Ancient Mariner: A comparative analysis of stylistics in Iron Maiden's and Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner 2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a comparative analysis of stylistics in Iron Maiden’s adaptation of Samuel T. Coleridge’s Rime of the ancient mariner. The essay employs the following concepts: the poetic function of language, the referential function of language, parallelism, and meter to investigate stylistic differences and conformity between the two texts. Furthermore, the essay also discusses how the stylistic elements affect meaning, especially regarding the theme of sin and redemption, and the extent to which the meaning of Iron Maiden’s text conforms to, differs from, or is informed by Coleridge’s poem.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyse how children’s literature for ages 6 – 8 is adapted to pupils with reading difficulties. The material used for analysis in this study is six children’s books, examining some of the criteria by which a text is classified as easy-to-read. The result of the analysis shows that there is a possibility for pupils with reading difficulties to read something other than easy-to-read literature if it is carefully selected. The result also shows that the different criteria for an easy-to-read text cannot alone indicate whether a book as a whole is easy-to-read or not.

War Georg Bendemanns Vater dement?: Die Vaterfigur in Franz Kafkas ›Das Urteil‹ im medizinischen Diskurs2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In Franz Kafka's The Judgement many things remain unsaid. Most of all it is the unpredictable behaviour of the father figure which is difficult to understand. That has caused a large number of interpretations and the critical reception continues.

At the beginning of the story, the fictional father appears weak and ill, evoking memories of disease. Therefore, the following essay explores whether the behaviour of the father figure corresponds to the symptoms of dementia. For this purpose, the diagnostic criteria for neurocognitive disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders were compared to the text.

The analysis shows that many passages in the text reflect symptoms of dementia. However, it also shows that other interpretations are possible, which is not surprising given the indeterminacy of Kafka's work. As has already been established in earlier investigations, the fictional father stands as a symbol for authority. Assuming the father has dementia means that this authority is incurably ill. Therefore, the fictional father would symbolize an almighty institution in decline whose authority cannot be questioned by the individual. This way of interpretation emphasizes the unjust distribution of power. The acting figures represent unequal relations of any kind, in which the inferior has to obey the obviously ill but overpowering authority.

Narrating the process of dying: An analysis of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and its pedagogical implications2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This cross-disciplinary essay explores the use of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars (2012) and its pedagogical implications for learners in middle school. It demonstrates that the novel expresses preparatory grief by implementing internal focalisation through the main character Hazel Grace. The essay also argues that the pedagogical implications related to the novel can yield fruitful results in the EFL classroom. The analysis is conducted by, firstly, exploring the novel’s depiction of preparatory grief and, secondly, examining the pedagogical implications from a trauma-informed teaching perspective. The main findings are that preparatory grief is present throughout the novel and that a trauma-informed teaching approach is apt for the inclusion of the novel in the EFL classroom, which ultimately can improve learners’ awareness of a young adult’s perspective on the process of dying.

The Brexit Subject: Cognitive Capitalism and Biopolitical Production in Post-Referendum Fiction2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores precarization of work and subject formation in seven post-referendum Brexit novels through theories of cognitive capitalism and biopolitical production. The analysis is anchored in Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri’s reconceptualization of Michel Foucault’s notion of biopolitics. Hardt and Negri combine the concept of biopolitics with contemporary theories of cognitive capitalism and immaterial labour, to illuminate how subjects are subsumed into a system of biopower in which capitalistic production has become biopolitical production. I argue that the Brexit novels examined in this thesis demonstrate how the intrinsic bond between production and life shapes the characters’ relationship to the referendum. As the characters are caught between individual goals and communal values, in a system that demands that they take sole responsibility for their own success while also being responsible democratic citizens, the referendum produces conflicted subjects that experience deep internal and external conflicts in relation to Brexit.

Patrick McGrath and his Worlds: Madness and the Transnational Gothic2020Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Following the publication of Ghost Town (2005), a complex, globally conscious genealogy of millennial Manhattan, McGrath’s transnational status as an English author resident in New York, his pointed manipulation of British and American contexts, and his clear apprehension of imperial legacies have all come into sharper focus. By bringing together readings cognizant of this transnational and historical sensitivity with those that build on existing studies of McGrath’s engagements with the gothic and madness, Patrick McGrath and his Worlds sheds new light on an author whose imagined realities reflect the anxieties, pathologies, and power dynamics of our contemporary world order. McGrath’s fiction has been noted as parodic (The Grotesque, 1989), psychologically disturbing (Spider, 1990), and darkly sexual (Asylum, 1996). Throughout, his corpus is characterized by a preoccupation with madness and its institutions and by a nuanced relationship to the gothic. With its international range of contributors, and including a new interview with McGrath himself, this book opens up hitherto underexplored theoretical perspectives on the key concerns of McGrath’s ouevre, moving conversations around McGrath’s work decisively forward. Offering the first sustained exploration of his fiction’s transnational and world-historical dimensions, Patrick McGrath and his Worlds seeks to situate, reflect upon, and interrogate McGrath’s role as a key voice in Anglophone letters in our millennial global moment.

Patrick McGrath and Passion: the Gothic modernism of Asylum and Beyond2020Inngår i: Patrick McGrath and his Worlds: Madness and the Transnational Gothic / [ed] Matt Foley, Rebecca Duncan, London: Routledge, 2020, s. 103-115Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter reads Asylum (1996) and Port Mungo (2004) to suggest the centrality of passion to McGrath’s writing and, more specifically, to argue for the importance of modernist aesthetics and influences to mediating and locating these representations. There is still much to be said about the complex influences that modernism has on McGrath’s signature first-person narration and regarding the ways in which his fiction explores and critiques modernist concerns. As a starting point for further investigations, our argument makes the case that some of McGrath’s work can be understood as “gothic modernist:” that is, as drawing together modernist technique and concerns with images of gothic excess. Important intertexts for McGrath include first-person modes of narration drawn from modernism, for example from Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Solder: a Tale of Passion (1914), as well the “primtivist” turn to modernist aesthetics, evident in the writing of D. H. Lawrence, and in the post-Impressionist paintings of Paul Gauguin.

    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the relationship between women, food and power in two novels by the Swedish feminist writer Elin Wägner (1882-1949): The Norrtull Gang (Norrtullsligan 1908), and Penwoman (Pennskaftet 1910). One important point of departure is Diana McGee's Writing the Meal (2001), in which she examines how various representations of food reflect the feminist ideas of women writers of the period and their criticism of the traditional roles of women in society.

The analysis shows that Elin Wägner utilises the representation of food to examine and criticise the condition of women in contemporary Swedish society. The critical aspect dominates in the first novel, where food serves as a symbol for the harsh economic conditions, while the second sometimes parodies the role of the housewife and food in order to destabilise traditional gender norms.

    Abstract [en]

"I am something in-between": Class and Colonialism in Gustaf Hellström's Bildungsroman Love and Politics

This article analyses Gustaf Hellström’s novel Kärlek och politik [Love and Politics], published 1942, both from a class perspective and a postcolonial one, showing how they interact with each other together with gender. Following the novel’s hero, Stellan Petreus, and his development during his stay in London 1908-11 as a foreign correspondent, the analyses shows how his identity as a Swede and as a liberal middle class man is problematized, when he is confronted with class conflicts and social injustices in England and with British colonial politics, especially towards Ireland and India. The analyses also shows that Stellan Petreus uses his writings, both as a journalist and as an author of fiction, as a way to handle the conflicts he is faced to. Another way to handle the conflicts is to define his position as a compromise between (mellanting).

Genuskonstruktioner i två dystopier: Värdegrundsarbete i gymnasieskolans svenskämne2022Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The Schizoid Subject: Filth and Desire in Samuel R. Delany's Hogg2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates in which ways Samuel R. Delany’s novel Hogg challenge the discourse of normality as stipulated, supported and maintained by the capitalist Oedipal repression of desire. Drawing from Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of the Anti-Oedipus, this thesis explores how Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of desire as a free and productive force can be seen as a disruptive element in a society that relies on repression of the subject for its stability. Furthermore, this thesis explores how the novel questions the understanding of civilisation being dependent on the individual’s submission to the Oedipus triangulation and in extension the Oedipal capitalist separation between the public and the private sphere. Ultimately, the main argument claims that Oedipal repression of desire only allows desire to invest in a restricted number of representations, making other identities than the heteronormative suspicious or invisible.

Hogg depicts a society where capitalism commodifies everything, and need the Oedipal subject to ensure its stability. The characters in the novel that do not subject themselves to the capitalist discourse escape the subjection to the Oedipal triangulation, and are thus free to invest their desire in any way they choose, primarily in non-heterosexual and salirophiliac activities. These characters can be seen as schizoid subjects that are constantly threatening to expose the fragility of the social structure by embodying a contrast to the hegemonic discourse and therefore constantly question its authority as main creator of reason and reality.

Reading Discourses of Power and Violence in Emerging Kashmiri Literature in English: The Collaborator and Curfewed Night2018Inngår i: Review of Human Rights, ISSN 2520-7024, Vol. 4, nr 1, s. 30-49Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This essay studies two literary texts on Kashmir, The Collaborator (2011) by Mirza Waheed and Curfewed Night (2010) by Basharat Peer and analyzes the discourses of power and covert and overt forms of violence that the works present. It first contextualizes events from the last three years that have occurred in Kashmir to present forms of violence Kashmiri subjects undergo in the quotidian of life. Thereafter, it situates the two works by the Kashmiri writers in the growing body of writing in English on Kashmir and historicizes the conflict. The essay, thus, argues that the selected literary works represent Kashmir as a unique postcolonial conflict zone that defies an easy terminology to understand the onslaught of violence, and the varied forms of power. As analyzed in the article, one finds a curious merging of biopolitics and necropolitics that constructs the characters as “living dead” within this emergency zone. For this, the theoretical trajectory of the essay is mapped out to show the transition from Foucault and Agamben’s idea of biopolitics to Mbembe’s concept of necropolitics. Thereafter, essay concludes how the two texts illustrate Agamben’s notion of the bare life is not enough to understand subjects living in this unique postcoloniality. The presence of death and the dead bodies go beyond bare life and shows how that bodies become significant signifiers that construct a varied notion of agency.

    Subverting the Nation-State Through Post-Partition Nostalgia: Joginder Paul’s Sleepwalkers2019Inngår i: Humanities, E-ISSN 2076-0787, Vol. 8, nr 1Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

With the advent of the Progressive Writers Movement, Urdu Literature was marked with a heightened form of social realism during the Partition of British India in 1947. Joginder Paul, once a part of this movement, breaks away from this realist tradition in his Urdu novella, Khwabrau (Sleepwalkers), published in 1990. Sleepwalkers shifts the dominant realist strain in the form and content of Urdu fiction to open a liminal “third space” that subverts the notion of hegemonic reality. Sleepwalkers is based on a time, many years after the Partition in the city of Karachi, and focuses on the “mohajirs” from Lucknow who construct a mnemonic existential space by constructing a simulacrum of pre-Partition Lucknow (now in India). This paper examines the reconceptualization of spaces through the realm of political nostalgia and the figure of the refugee subject “performing” this nostalgia. This nostalgic reconstruction of space, thus, becomes a “heterotopia” in Foucauldian terms, one that causes a rupture in the unities of time and space and the idea of nation-hood. The refugee subjects’ subversion of the linearity of time opens a different time in the narration of a nation that necessitates that the wholeness of the “imagined” physical space of a nation be questioned.

The Horror of Contact: Understanding Cholera in Mann’s Death in Venice2017Inngår i: Transtext Transcultures, ISSN 2105-2549, Vol. 12, s. 1-10Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Thomas Mann’s novella, Death in Venice (Der Tod in Venedig) was published in 1912, and written during a time when cholera as a fatal disease had made its presence felt in Italy in 1911 and caused a series of fatalities. This article focuses on the notion of tropicality, and the diseased body and what it means in terms of imagining the colonized spaces as represented in the novella, through the discourse of nineteenth century imperial medicine. The historical context of the 1911 cholera epidemic in Italy is indeed significant in the contextualization and the production of the text. Yet, as the paper argues, the disease of cholera works in a larger metaphor to enable a colonial discourse that serves as a cautionary reminder of barring contact zones, “the horrors of diversity” as Mann’s text states when first describing the emergence of Asiatic cholera in the text.

Genusfrågor i skolan med hjälp av skönlitteratur: Fem gymnasielärares erfarenheter i ämnet svenska2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

In a hole in the English classroom, there lived a hobbit: Archetypal criticism and ways to use The Hobbit for EFL learning2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay focuses on Bilbo Baggins’ journey towards becoming a hero in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. In order to analyse Bilbo’s development as a character, Joseph Campbell’s theory of the hero’s quest is applied to his journey. Since Bilbo does not possess the traits of a traditional hero character, the model is not expected to fit Bilbo’s journey. However, the model does actually fit his journey, in contradiction to the expected. This essay also argues for the use of The Hobbit in the EFL classroom since the novel’s variety of themes and large fandom can work as an incentive for students to analyse fantasy in order to get familiar with older literature and use the fantasy worlds as a metaphor for our own world. Since the main focus of this essay is on archetypes the critical lens is archetypal criticism.

Gamification and Literature: A Study of the Motivational Impact of Gamification as a Method of Teaching English Literature2015Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper analyses what the effects would be of using gamification as a method of teaching English literature in Swedish schools. The essay explores different theories of motivation as a theoretical framework for analyzing gamification and teaching literature. After an in depth analysis of gamification the essay links the method to the motivational theories and to teaching literature. An example is also provided of what it might look like if gamification was applied to teaching English literature. In the end, conclusions can be drawn about what the effects of gamification would be as a method of teaching. The essay will show that gamification can be a viable method of teaching promoting student motivation but cannot be claimed to necessarily be a superior method of teaching compared to other methods and even comes with certain risks.

    Abstract [en]

The article seeks to present the career of Thomas Chatterton, an eighteenth-century literary forger, whose title to fame lies in an attempt to hoodwink Horace Walpole and to persuade him to publish „medieval poems”, supposedly discovered by Chatterton in the cellars of his parish church. When his hoax was discovered, Chatterton committed suicide. His tragic story made him an inspiration for many Romantic poets. Chatterton's last moments also became the subject of a well-known painting by the Victorian artist Henry Wallis. he article studies Chatterton's „posthumous career” in the context of predominant themes of Romantic poetry, and especially the concept of Romantic hero.

Popular Fiction Tropes in George Eliot’s Felix Holt: the Radical2016Inngår i: Anglica: An International Journal of the English Studies, ISSN 0860-5734, Vol. 25, nr 1Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In line with recent critical approaches to George Eliot that increasingly question her reputation as a realist writer, the article seeks to analyse the plot and characterisation in George Eliot’s Felix Holt: The Radical (1866) with reference to popular (and especially sensational and melodramatic) tropes often found in fiction of the period. The article discusses such plot elements as the trial scene in which the heroine gives testimony in order to help the hero, the heroine’s renouncement of her fortune, and the figures of a fallen woman (treated as a cautionary example by the heroine) and of a mysterious suitor with a troubled past.

    Abstract [en]

Focusing on the main character Fausta in the film The milk of sorrow / La teta asustada by Claudia Llosa, this article applies a narratological and postcolonial queer analysis to the process of Fausta’s identity creation to reveal in the text certain cultural identity negotiations. It is suggested that by means of the representation of cultural identity, a critique is posed to the current (un)balance of power that is directly relatable to coloniality. The study concludes that cultural identity is based on character(s)-construction and their relation to chronotopes, i.e. representations of temporal and spatial categories or ‘time-space’. It is also suggested that the text questions traditional models of power, although the critique is less potent in parts of the text.
