I sanningens ögonblick: berättelser om hur frontlinepersonal levererar service2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, I investigate the use of SWOT analysis and the resource based view as tools to elaborate a business plan and in academic research by assessing the two methods’ strengths and weaknesses.

I found that SWOT analysis is useful to structure and prioritise information in a short and concise way. Even though, the information and the information collection methods as well as the concepts and theories used in combinaton with the model and their quality is of the most importance for a proper use of the model.

The resource based view is useful to reflect over which internal resources are the most valuable for the company, even though it can be difficult to assess the most important assets, i.e. the intangible assets. I also found that the fact that the resource based view, which is a explanantory theory, is used as a predicative theory causes uncertainaty and is problematic.

Cooperation of INGOs in times of humanitarian crises.: A case study from Rwanda.2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study is looking at the cooperation between international NGOs within one particular humanitarian crisis, namely the genocide and following refugee crisis in Rwanda 1994. While researching the topic of NGO cooperation, it became clear that plenty research about NGO cooperation can be found whereas very little research exists concerning the cooperation of INGOs. Hence, the relevance to research this topic further stems from the assumption that cooperation is an important tool to organize humanitarian work more efficiently and should, therefore, be improved. The work at hand is a desk study and tries to answer whether cooperation exists and how it is pursued. A theoretical framework was created by combining a model of functions that civil society should fulfil with an inter-organizational knowledge sharing approach in order to elaborate on those questions. The used method is the case study approach. The history of Rwanda in 1994 was used as a setting for the study because it is one particularly well-researched topic and provides a good entry point to explore the field of INGO cooperation with other INGOs. In conclusion, the results show that cooperation exists and is pursued in different sectors. Successful cooperation does, however, always require the willingness to reduce competition and find compromises. The extent to which INGOs are doing so varies. In the future, more organizational documentation is needed to truly explore this topic in-depth. It should also be noted that serious problems were met in finding good sources of information from the INGOs involved in this study and that they did not actively reply to requests of supplying further information.

Greater Albania - The Next Crisis in the Balkans?2009Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The Balkans has suffered from quite a few problems as a result of the countless ambitious endeavors for great states of the ethnic groups residing in the Peninsula. The most recent great state idea to have caused troubles in the region is the Serbs’ Great Serbia (i.e. Yugoslvia), which caused a cycle of wars, the latest one being the war in Kosovo in the late 1990s. This thesis attempts to evaluate the rumors of yet another great state in the making – or rather awakening again: the attempt at a Greater Albania, and whether the Albanians in the Balkans are still harboring the idea of any such state. Particular emphasis is placed upon the following questions:

    • Where does the idea of a Greater Albania stem from?
    • Is a Greater Albania today still on the Albanians’ agenda as a real political plan?
    • What speaks for and against a Greater Albania? Is the idea even feasible?

The findings indicate that none of the Albanian communities residing in the Balkan region wish for a Greater Albania, nor do their leaders. The Serbs nonetheless maintain that an Albanian threat exists and has done so ever since 1878 when the idea of a Greater Albania first arose. However, according to the results of this study, their claims lack credibility. Everything indicates that today, and with Albania striving for membership in the European Union, the idea of a Greater Albania has been left in the past.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this studie centers on how lgbt (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) are portrayed in women’s magazines. The magazines we have chosen to analyze are FRIDA, VeckoRevyn and amelia, which all three have different target groups. We have, with the assistance of the rhetorical and semiotic analysis methods, assessed 18 articles with their associated photographs. These methods are part of the qualitative analysis model and are used in order to study less empirical data with more depth. With the qualitative analysis we were able to see potential patterns among our empirical data.

Lgbt is known as a minority group and has often been described in a stereotypical way. We wanted to see if and how the portraying of lgbt has changed within the last 16 years and if the different target groups affect the portrayal.

Our studie shows that stereotypes, according to the magazines, are still a part of the preconceptions in our society. In the middle of 1990’s the magazines wrote about stereotypes such as the lonely lizzie and the sparkling faggot. Nowadays they focus on what is seen as feminine and/or masculine. Heteronormativity is still the prescribed values of today.

    Abstract [sv]

Empowerment of Women through a Colourful slum-project: A case of the slum-upgrading project in Kampung Tridi of Indonesia2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to evaluate if a slum-upgrading project in 2016 in Malang, Indonesia lead to empowerment of the women living in the neighbourhood. The study uses the concept of Empowerment by Naila Kabeer as a theoretical lens and focuses on women’s resources, agency and achievement after the project was carried out. The study was conducted as a Minor Field Study, which relied mainly on semi-structured interviews, which were complemented with personal observation. The respondents were selected purposively: meaning only those who participated in the painting project. The study findings are limited to the case explored and do not thus aim to a generalization on other projects in Indonesia. Findings are however informative for similar projects in similar contexts.

The findings indicate that women were initially excluded from official decision-making during the project. In spite of this, however, the project enabled women to be more active in the economy to organize their own meetings and become responsible for the communal cleaning and events in the area. This participation led women to also have more to say in the community and they have been able to increase their savings and set goals for their families and children, which was impossible before the existence of the slum-upgrading in the area.

    Abstract [sv]

Sailing together from different shores: labour markets and inequality on board merchant ships2019Ingår i: Global Networks, ISSN 1470-2266, E-ISSN 1471-0374Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we analyse the consequences of the conditions of the labour-market contracts for working on board merchant ships. More specifically, we examine how seafarers hired on different contracts work together. Seafarers' conditions of work differ considerably: some, mainly workers in the West, have permanent contracts with a shipping company, are paid a relatively high monthly wage and can go ashore every second month, whereas others performing the same tasks may have to stay at sea for more than six months at a time, and work for less money on temporary contracts. Drawing on the economic sociology of markets and institutional theory, in this article we present the institutional conditions of globalized labour markets for seafarers and analyse unique data derived from observations and interviews on board merchant ships. We argue that the notion of market is a key explanatory factor for how the work is conducted on board. Theoretically, our elaboration on markets allows us to conceptualize and address global and transnational markets.

    Abstract [sv]

Euskadi Ta Askatasuna: - Reasons for Existence. A Case Study in the Basque Country2009Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this case study I explore why the conflict of the Basque country which involves Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) persists. The purpose is to gain an understanding of the existence of ETA. Working somewhat  as an ethnographer the method has been to observe Basque society and through semi- structured interviews gain an understanding of ETAs existence. As exemplified with the hermeneutic circle, this case study starts out with a preunderstanding of the reasons for the existence of ETA, a preunderstanding which alters many times during my visit to the Basque country.

Keys to understanding the continued existence of ETA is that historical “injustices” are perceived to still exist in the Basque country. Perceptions which question the legitimacy of the Spanish state in the Basque country. Further the social base of ETA, as exemplified in election support for Herri Batasuna (HB), still remains rather strong despite the party‟s illegalization and finally, the perceived lack of a functioning democracy in Spain and the lack of legitimacy of the Spanish state in the Basque country are among the reasons for the continued existence of ETA.

”Duktig tjej” vs. ”dålig tjej”: Tjejer i relation till sex i ungdomslitteratur2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to analyze how sex effects young girls sense of identity as well as to see which norms there is about sex in relation to girls, which power it has over how they are able to act and still be accepted by their peers and the society. The material that was used consisted of four books that are marketed as ”for young adults” and in which sex was a major component of the stories. The method that was used for studying the books was a qualitative text analysis and the theoretic framework consisted of queer theory, with a main focus on the unstability of gender/sex and sexuality, performativity, the heterosexual matrix and heteronormativity.

The analysis showed that all books compared the girls to traditional norms about how girls are ”supposed” to act. All while they contradict themselves by showing sides of female sexuality which go against the former understanding of girls and girls sexuality. The female sexuality plays a big part in how girls are understood, how their identity is created. At the same time as sex allows them to create their identity it also creates them and controls them. Beacuse as soon as they don’t conform to the norms they are understood as ”odd” and ”wrong”.

At the bridging point: tutoring newly arrived students in Sweden2017Ingår i: International Journal of Inclusive Education, ISSN 1360-3116, E-ISSN 1464-5173, Vol. 21, nr 4, s. 404-415Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, tutoring in the mother tongue is a special support measure primarily intended for newly arrived students to facilitate their transition into the Swedish school system. Tutoring is premised on the collaboration between the class teacher, responsible for subject-related expertise, and the tutor, who contributes with knowledge of the student’s mother tongue and previous context of studies. In this case study of class teachers’ and mother tongue tutors’ conditions for collaboration at a multi-ethnic primary school, six mother tongue tutors and six class teachers were asked about the purpose of their work, how it was organised, and what could be done to improve working conditions. Interviews with head teachers, and data on work organisation from observations, document study, and participation in meetings for a period of one and a half years supplemented the teacher interviews. The analysis focuses on whether tutors and teachers belong to the same or different Communities of Practice, based on shared concerns and opportunities for collaboration, as well as looking at the relative positioning of languages and teaching roles. Findings suggest that the degree of collaboration between tutors and teachers was not sufficient to allow tutoring to function in the way it is envisaged by national steering documents. Tutoring was instead based on the tutors’ own knowledge of the subjects they taught. Recruitment of suitable tutors was difficult. However, conditions for collaboration and more effective tutoring in the schools could be improved with relatively simple support structures at the level of the municipality.

Pratiques d’engagements collaboratifs: Le rôle de la bibliothèque dans un quartier urbain multiethnique en Suède2013Ingår i: Education & Formation, s. 97-107Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [fr]

To promote attainment and inclusion, Sweden offers tuition in migrant pupils’ mother tongues as a regular school subject. However, the formulation of learning aims is problematic, and resources allocated to the subject do not correspond to ambitions expressed in steering documents. This case study presents an analysis of the organization of Mother Tongue Studies at a highly diverse urban primary school, based on interviews with teachers and head teachers. The practical organization of Mother Tongue Tuition affects how mother tongue teachers and pupils are perceived, but also potentially provides opportunities for empowerment and educational development. Results indicate that in the investigated case, such opportunities are not exploited, placing mother tongue teachers in a state of continuous structural stress, while limiting the forms their teaching relationships can take. Additionally, scheduling the school subject Mother Tongue Studies at the ‘edgelands' of the school day contributed to further marginalizing languages taught as mother tongue and minimized interaction with class teachers.

The role of the school library: Reflections from Sweden2014Ingår i: Intercultural Education, ISSN 1467-5986, E-ISSN 1469-8439, Vol. 25, nr 6, s. 497-507Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Libraries are critical learning spaces and may play a significant role in intercultural education initiatives, particularly in Sweden where the national curriculum ascribes central functions to libraries for learning activities. Unfortunately, the ways in which teachers and librarians may collaborate to leverage mutual resources is not fully understood. This article uses Pirjo Lahdenperä’s model of intercultural education development to consider the case of a small school library in a highly diverse urban neighbourhood. Although public libraries in Scandinavia can support intercultural educational values by addressing individual needs and complementing curriculum-based teaching, the development of new teaching practices requires additional guidance as well as institutional support.

Educational leadership in a state of protracted crisis: refugee education in Lebanon2018Ingår i: The Primary Colours of Education #3 «School Leadership Matters»: Conference Book : 16th & 17th April 2018 - Baška, Croatia, Zagreb: Network of Education Policy Centers , 2018, s. 20-21Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The presentation is based on a series of interviews with school leaders working with refugee children in Lebanon, both within the Lebanese schools and in various NGOs. Questions focused the social, pedagogical and economic dimensions of their work, as well as their strategies for organising training and functioning structures.

In Lebanon, there are different groups of refugee and migrant pupils in need of education, at primary and secondary levels. These include Palestinians born in Lebanon, or recently arrived as refugees, Syrian refugees, refugees from other countries, and children of migrant workers. The residence and work status of their parents varies. The Syrian refugees constitute a very large group, but the exact numbers are uncertain.

The uncertain and precarious situation of the refugees, lack of resources and poor living conditions are major dimensions of the work of school leaders in these contexts, both for those working within the Lebanese schools, and for those who have leadership functions within the NGOs.

    Abstract [en]

Beyond conventional relief efforts, gaining a more detailed picture of constraints, resources and risks encountered by refugees as well as of the meaning differing circumstances have for the concerned individuals may serve as a basis for developing more organised and collective responses to ensure social security in conditions of forced displacement and migration.Syrian refugees live very diverse situations, depending on access to social, financial and educational capital, as well as on their religion. Nevertheless, findings suggest that macro-scales policies have driven a large proportion of the interviewed Syrians into informality, and into situations of great personal insecurity. Particularly in Lebanon, policies primarily aim to restrict movement, control the refugees, and avoid permanent settlement by restrictive regulations concerning work. The Syrian community that was studied in Egypt appeared to be in a somewhat better situation. Despite restrictions on movement, lack of services, poor quality of education and poverty, Syrians had started small businesses, and functioned openly as a community. Also here, however, longer term perspectives were lacking.

Making space for collaboration at school and preschool: the places mother tongue teachers meet teachers of other subjects2018Ingår i: Multilingualism and Education: Interdisciplinary and International Perspectives, 7 May 2018, Oslo, 2018, s. 36-37Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Recent changes in the Swedish Education Act aim at reducing time spent in reception classes, so that newly arrived pupils (at least partly) enter mainstream classes on arrival. A consequence is that educating newcomers has become the responsibility of all school staff. Expectations on the contribution of mother tongue teachers have increased, as well as presupposing extensive collaboration between bilingual support staff or mother tongue teachers and teachers of other school subjects.

The presentation focuses on the social practices in schools concerning mother tongue teachers and their potential participation in school development and collaboration with other staff, paying particular attention to the places where meetings occur. Three mother tongue teachers were followed a total of 15 days in a period of six months, to observe the opportunities for collaboration and communication in their working days. Two of these teachers also worked with study guidance.

Results suggest that among the significant aspects were: the place of interaction, the language, higher status of mother tongue at the school, a positive attitude in teachers involved, and interaction with an entire class and with other staff. Places of meeting were frequently corridors, the staff rooms, or other places that were not normally designated for regular teaching or planning activities. The places of interaction thus tended to underline the marginal position of the mother tongue teachers with respect to participation in school development.

Crafting Futures in Lebanese Refugee Camps: The Case of Burj El Barajneh Palestinian Camp2019Ingår i: FORMakademisk, ISSN 1890-9515, Vol. 12, nr 2Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The initiative at the Burj El Barajneh camp is run by a network of local associations, and aims at improving living conditions, services, infrastructure and livelihoods for the inhabitants. Burj el Barajneh has a large number of active associations and many highly educated professionals. However, in this kind of complex hyperdense context any kind of change needs to be carefully considered, there are no simple recipes, and existing professional expertise does not necessarily match the specific conditions of the locality. By working with collective design and collaboration between the camp's inhabitants, it becomes possible to envisage larger coordinated efforts, and to solve issues that remain blocked at an individual level.

From policy to practice: Roma education in Albania and Sweden2017Ingår i: The Urban review, ISSN 0042-0972, E-ISSN 1573-1960, Vol. 49, nr 3, s. 463-477Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to make a contribution to recentering practice- and practitioner-oriented issues in Roma education studies. Gaps can be observed today between conditions of educational work in practice and the ways education is understood in mainstream academic discussions, compounded by the fact that educational workers in the field have limited access to academic environments. Also, as a subject dealing with minorities, education for Roma and Roma communities tends to occupy a marginal position in academic departments of Education. Inversely, in Roma studies, focus often lies on culture or history, and education is mainly considered through the lens of identity. This means that many important experiences in Roma educational work remain silent, and significant aspects of practices are not sufficiently shared across contexts. In this paper, experiences from education projects in Albania and Sweden are presented and considered against the background of Roma education policies in these countries generally. An analysis is made of the ways these projects directly or indirectly connect to local academic structures. Finally, suggestions are made of potential strategies for developing practice- and practitioner-driven research in this area, to make relevant experiences more accessible across linguistic and national borders.

Higher Education as a Socio-economic Advancement Opportunity for Refugees2017Ingår i: 33. Deutscher Orientalistentag "Asia, Africa and Europe" 18 – 22 september 2017, Jena, Tyskland, 2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This conceptual paper addresses the relationships between higher education policies for refugees and the wider issues of social justice, transition to sustainability, peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery in the Middle East. The paper draws on an overview of current options for refugees to access higher education, as well as research on long term impacts in post conflict contexts. Perspectives adopted in the paper involve theorizing the ways higher education shapes socio-technical systems in the Middle East, and the effects this can have for economic recovery and autonomy. Today, the world is facing the greatest refugee and displacement crisis since the Second World War. The immediate causes of the crisis seem to be armed conflicts and radicalisation of societies. At closer inspection, we can see that this crisis reflects a repeated failure of the international economic and political system in addressing certain major challenges, including social justice and adequate education. While international politics has failed to support stability or prevent political conflicts, growing neoliberalism and ineffective development strategies have instead contributed to social injustice and economic instability at national and international levels. Higher education plays a key role in stabilisation, modernization and de-radicalisation of societies, but has to date only received limited attention in development assistance strategies or in the context of humanitarian aid for refugees. Young refugees and displaced academics are therefore insufficiently equipped to work as catalysts for peacebuilding in their own or host countries. Moreover, they are under severe economic and social pressure to earn money for their family’s survival. Given these circumstances, opening up opportunities for higher education for young refugees (O'Keeffe and Pásztor 2017) not only give them the hope to improve their socioeconomic situation, but will also change their personal status as a “refugee”. Crucially, a well-educated generation is a fundamental condition for successful reconstruction, social recovery and sustainable development in the post conflict future (Emtairah et al. 2016). Attention must be devoted to the form and content of higher education, however, to address challenges, create capacity needed in recovery efforts, and avoid future dependencies (cf. Dryden-Peterson 2016).

Higher Education for Refugees: The Case of Syria2017Ingår i: Policy & Practice: A Development Education Review, ISSN 1748-135X, nr 24, s. 104-125Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The refugee crisis is also a crisis in education.  While attention is frequently directed toward primary and secondary school levels, higher education is a strategic issue for refugees, both as individuals and for long term processes of post-conflict recovery and peacebuilding.  Education prospects and content are drivers of onwards migration, but also affect economic structures on return.  Higher education has the potential to support sustainable socio-economic development, but impacts will depend on which strategies are adopted and which types of capacity are prioritised.  The article examines the issue of access to higher education for Syrian refugees, describing the situation in Lebanon in particular.  Foreign interests can fuel sectarianism as well as creating economic structural dependencies.  Both existing and possible future options supported by the international community are considered here, and discussed with respect to how they might affect opportunities for democratic and autonomous societal developments.

Futures as seen from the diaspora: the Syria 2040 workshops2018Ingår i: Presented at The Refugees, Borders and Membership Conference: Open International Conference, Malmö Unviersity 24-26 October 2018, Malmö: Malmö University , 2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The Syria 2040 workshops were initiated in 2016 by the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics and the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, Lund University, and ran for one and a half years, using scenario methodology. Syrians with diverse backgrounds and political standpoints, living in Sweden and other European countries, collectively reflected on possible scenarios for future developments in Syria. Since the debate in situations of conflict tends to be structured around the immediate conflict (and those who “win” or lose through this), it can be especially constructive to reflect on a longer time perspective. Also, many discussion fora are directed by particular interest groups or are financed by international actors with their own interests in the outcome. The workshops were intended as a space where more open discussions could take place across dividing lines, considering ways forward. This presentation focuses on reflections from one of these workshops, which dealt with possible roles for the Syrian diaspora and civil society. Although various factions and diverging agendas of the diaspora might sustain and aggravate tensions it was concluded that the diaspora can play a constructive role provided that it learns how to play a more active part and find suitable structures.

The Ukraine crisis: A geopolitical power struggle between Russia and the US.2015Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine Russia’s and the US behaviors and actions in the Ukraine crisis in order to understand why the conflict resulted in a geopolitical power struggle. Since the current debate is filled with biased information and propaganda, this thesis aims to observe the behaviors and actions from both sides objectively to get a comprehensive understanding of their involvement in the crisis. It is a desk-study since the data is gathered from books and articles. It is qualitative due to the fact that it investigates this particular conflict by using several sources to gain an in-depth knowledge of a two-sided perspective. The method text analysis is used on four chosen articles that will be observed in order to find the underlying reasons of Russia’s and the US ongoing involvement in the crisis. It is an abductive reasoning whereas the theory offensive realism is used as the theoretical lens in order to highlight the most essential information of the chosen articles that will be examined. The three categories diplomacy, economy and military have been applied to outline Russia’s and the US underlying reasons of their behaviors and actions in the Ukraine crisis in order to answer the research questions. The result shows from an offensive realism perspective that Russia and the US are involved in the crisis due to their strategic interest to dominate the Black Sea Region for personal gains. It is shown that both states acted upon self-interest to gain more power and to lesser their rival’s power in order to hinder one another to become a territorial hegemon in the Black Sea Region. It is suggested that the outcome of the Ukraine crisis could have been different without their involvement.

Decentralization in Response to Drought: A Case Study to Somalia2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Decentralization has been one of the most extensively accepted political strategies since the 1980s, especially when it comes to development administration complemented by the expansion of democratization at lower levels of government. It acts as a bottom-top of authority. A proponent of decentralization argues that decentralization strengthens democracy, good governance and accountability. It is more effective and closer to the people because power is delegated to the local authority. Opponents of decentralization beliefs that is difficult to coordinate many local governments and demanding financial and human capital. This paper lies under that debate and presents how decentralization responds to droughts as a case study to Somalia.  Somalia has been exercising a highly centralized administration for a long time but now changed the structure of the government and built up a federal member states where the administration is widely decentralized. To understand the effectiveness of the system to mitigate and prevent droughts, the study will look at two different scenarios of droughts that hit the country. One was the mid-1970s under highly centralized administration while the other drought hit the country 2011-2012 under the decentralized structure of governance. This comparison aims to see the impact and respond that each system showed. The result will help the country to redesign their future prevention strategy and minimize the vulnerability of the droughts. Because of drought is one of the most destructive environmental phenomena, doing enormous damage to humankind and the livelihoods.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illuminate how social workers in social services work with the social phenomenon, homelessness in two municipalities. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with interviewees from a department of social services. Our theories that we used was resistant inequality, structural discrimination, exclusion, empowerment and representation. After compilation of our empirical our conclusions are that homelessness is a complex phenomenon. Social workers handles homelessness based on client’s needs and the work is individualized. There are no specific plans or guidelines. Homelessness is integrated in the organisation. The responsibility lies mainly on the individual to find housing. One other conclusion is that the landlords and housing are the largest affiliates to the social services regarding homelessness. The social workers work to prevent evictions by grants rent arrears because the housing market is the biggest problem. It’s a growing problem in both municipalities.

    Abstract [en]

Our thesis focus on how retirees perceive Tv4s news casts of economy news where we focused on five different aspects: What is the relationship between the news cast and the viewer and how does the viewer express their understanding of the news cast and the way it is constructed? What are the viewers attitude towards the news content and how do they find the news cast useful for them personally?

We choosed retirees as our target group due to their vulnerable economic position in today’s society and TV as an important medium for them due to the digital divide. The study was performed with twelve qualitative interviews and one group interview where six retirees took part.

We discovered a big interest for economic news in the target group. The majority had a sympathetic view of the news cast they saw but they also expressed skepticism toward the economy segment and/or news castings. The majority expressed a lack of trust for the journalists and the experts brought in to share observations and make announcements, and the financial business overall. The majority of the interviewees spoke of a hypothetic and/or possible usefulness but no one could express how the news castings affected them personally.

The Construction of Refugees in News Headlines: A Critical Discourse Analysis on Rohingya Refugees in Malaysia and Thailand2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

As news coverage regarding refugees have increased in the past decades, the media representation of refugees in the host countries tend to more or less portray them as national security risk. This study questions the differences between the news discourses in main recipient countries and the less recipient countries asking what factors determine the portrayal. This study seeks to fill the already existing field of research on media representation on Rohingya as available research is conducted on main recipient countries, Myanmar and Bangladesh. The countries chosen for this study are Malaysia and Thailand as they are considered third point of exit countries, they are in same region and as each country has same religious belief as either Myanmar or the Rohingya. Thus, the objective of the study is to understand how the news discourse in Malaysia and Thailand present their ideological perspectives on Rohingya in a subtle way to influence the opinion of the general public. Furthermore, it seeks to reveal how language is used in news reports to frame Rohingya and the underlying factors in which determines the approach of their news reporting. To answer the objective, this research analyses in total 40 news headlines by using the method of Critical Discourse Analysis. Moreover, the results indicate that the news discourse in Malaysia predominantly reports on the Rohingya emphatically and portrays them as active actors in the crisis doing anything to survive the Myanmar violence. The situation of Rohingya is also emphasized in the news discourse in Thailand, though not to same extent as in Malaysia. Thailand rather reports on the crisis itself and how the other actors involved urge and criticize one another. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that portrayal of Rohingya differs depending on who they are to the affected country as well as the international political relationship between the countries affected.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [it]

Opportunities and challenges of migrant work in the Italian long-term care system2013Ingår i: The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging, ISSN 1279-7707, E-ISSN 1760-4788, Vol. 17, nr Supplement, Juny/july, s. S133-S133Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Italy is one of the most aged countries in the world, with a longstanding tradition of family care of the dependent elderly. Inrecent times, however, Italy has been witnessing in-depth social and cultural changes, which have been negatively impacting on informal care provision. In addition, the public long-term care (LTC) system highly relies on cash-for-care schemes for supporting older people, whereas “formal” care services are characterised by weak coverage and intensity. This situation has led to a remarkable increase in theprivate employment of migrant care workers (MCWs), whose number increased by four times in the last two decades.

Method: An overview of MCWs phenomenon in Italy is provided through the analysis of empirical data retrieved by available official sources at national level, as well as by results from own surveys conducted in recent years on large samples of MCWs.

Results: The following opportunities and challenges concerning MCWs’ employment in the LTC sector were identified: improve MCW’s capacity to deliver quality care; reduce therisk of elder abuse and neglect and of meeting MCWs’ own care needs; increase their social integration in destination countries and reduce “care drain” in sending countries; and how to improve stakeholders’ involvement for a better exchange of good practices and more effective policy measures.

Conclusion: In these years, privately employed MCWs have contributed to change the traditional Italian “family care model” into a new “migrant-in-the-family care model”. However, the issue concerning the sustainability of this model within the Italian LTC system in the future is still open.

Coherent triads and successful inter-professional collaboration: narratives of professional actors in the Swedish child welfare system2019Ingår i: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 9, nr 3, s. 235-249Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze how and when the professional actors within the Swedish child welfare system portray successful cooperation and determine which discursive patterns are involved in the construction of this phenomenon. The empirical basis for this study is formed by 147 recorded interviews with institution-placed youths, their parents, and different occupational categories within the social services and the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care. Analytical findings with the following themes are presented: (1) coherent vision triad, (2) coherent rhetorically accepted triad, and (3) coherent exclusive triad. The personal interactive aspect of cooperation among professional actors in the care of children is important for successful collaboration. This aspect also appears to be significant for producing and reproducing joint collaboration identities. However, joint collaboration identities and the coherence triad can limit the sphere of cooperation to the entities involved in the care of youths and the juvenile or his/her parents are left out.

Konstruktion av normupplösning och moralisk panik. Etnografisk analys av underrättelse-, operativt polis- och gränsbevakningsarbete (Construction of norm resolution and moral panics. Ethnographic analysis concerning intelligence and operational police and border guards’ work)2018Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Studies in Policing, ISSN 1104-2176, E-ISSN 2242-458X, Vol. 4, nr 1, s. 50-69Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

Successful Collaboration in Social Care Practice: Beneficial Success Points of Interest for the Young Person in Swedish Juvenile Care2018Ingår i: Journal of Comparative Social Work, ISSN 0809-9936, E-ISSN 0809-9936, Vol. 13, nr 2, s. 56-77Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this ethnographic study is to analyse themes for ‘the successful collaborations’ that emerge from the study field notes on youth in Swedish juvenile care, and that can be interpreted as beneficial for these youth. These successful collaborations were observed, for instance, at meetings where the young persons were being discussed, and where an observer could distinguish planning for them that was carried out practically. The empirical base for this study is its total of 119 field observations/notes. The examples analysed reference a completed appointment for an eye test, a practical realization of active leisure, homework help and an internship placement that works. The coherence of three actors belonging to three different categories (coherent triads), and success points of interest that benefit the youth in the situation, create the image of a positive development for them. In this way, common identities of interplay that are useful for the young person are created and elucidated. The physical presence of the young person in these situations is an especially important theme for the ‘successful collaboration’. This study shows that trust and motivation are important aspects for a successful collaboration and inclusion of less powerful individuals and groups of individuals within a community. Young people discussed in this study receive confirmation of their identities by participating in the community, with a successful interaction between actors in juvenile care a prerequisite for successful involvement and integration.

    Abstract [en]

The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992–1995) is the historic background of this paper, as produced inthe reports of the United Nations and documents presented during international and national trialsconcerning war crimes committed during period. A literature review forms the analytical basis andcontains various studies from the domains of war sociology, social epistemology, pedagogy ofemancipation and lifelong learning, and sociology of knowledge. The aim of the paper is to analyse: 1)the negative/dark sides of social capital in the Bosnian–Herzegovinian post-genocide society thatemerged because of decades of symbolic and real war and post-war violence against the people in Bosniaand Herzegovina; and 2) the possibility of social development in the direction of a positive/lighter side ofsocial capital, in the sense of legitimising progressive politics of social development based on thefollowing foundations: a) learning peace, coexistence, and reconciliation; b) acknowledgment thatgenocide was carried out during the war and actively denied after the war; c) condemnation of genocide(both during the war and the post-war period); and d) active work to recognise the status of and obtaincompensation for the victims of the genocide (at the social, organisational/institutional, and individuallevels).

Ideology of neo-fascism, education, and culture of peace: the empirical case of Bosnia and Herzegovina2019Ingår i: Critical Education, ISSN 1920-4175, E-ISSN 1920-4175, Vol. 10, nr 6, s. 1-20Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to critically analyse intellectual conditions for education pertaining to the empirical and normative knowledge dimensions that can oppose the ideologies of neo-fascism. The analytical basis is a literature review of various studies from the domains of sociology of knowledge, war sociology, social epistemology, and critical pedagogy. The article explains the social need for better-quality public education pertaining to the meaning of political, media, and religious use and misuse of “identitarian concepts” and “identitarian terminology.” The privileged strategies of the political application of referential systems and mechanisms of ‘differentiating’ serve as the epistemic foundation to teach the concepts, terminology, taxonomies, and classifications used to separate people into “ours” and “theirs.” The genocide of Bosnian Bosniaks in the war against the Bosnian-Herzegovinian multicultural society conveys the need to create peaceful emancipatory identity politics and for a new pedagogy of emancipation of many of the oppressed and disenfranchised who are difficult to explicitly name. Conceptual problems, related to certain obvious paradoxes intrinsic in the politics of the collective representation of citizens after genocide, are linked to these processes.

The Effects of Female Genital Mutilation in Cameroon: Case Study: Ejagham Community of Eyumojock sub-division2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

Female genital mutilation and circumcision (FGM/C) is an expression that describes social and traditional actions performed for the removal of the clitoris and inner lips; labia minora as well as part of the outer lips; labia majora. The research has addressed the effects of this action on women in Ejagham community of the Southwest region of Cameroon. The study focuses on effects revealed during the research, including voices of the women who had undergone FGM/C, excisors recount, violence against women physical, psychological, social, and sexual effects.

In traditional African societies, cultural values should be upheld with dignity to humankind. Our traditional practices too, need to give honour to our bodies. Therefore, opinions from different groups within the Ejagham community are revealed in the discussion. More so, the study also found out that FGM/C was a practice performed on the girls and women on the cultural and traditional beliefs that the process signifies a rite of passage from girl to womanhood.  The process caused pain and violated the right of the young girls. The findings revealed that there are divided opinions on FGM/C within the community. Custodians of the Ejagham tradition that are in favour of the practice are conflicting with those who are against the practice on medical and human right justifications.  These different platforms play a prominent role in the various perceptions held by the people. A significant segment of the Ejagham community, together with some representatives of the international community, NGOs and the government of Cameroon are involved in efforts to bring about change in the community by eliminating the tradition through community-based awareness programs. These programs that are accessible by everybody has empowered people in the community with knowledge on the subject and provided the necessary resources that will help in eliminating the practice. The efforts have initiated a changing climate in the community; however, this does not yet mean that the tradition has been abolished.

The paper shall also discuss the traditional and cultural reasons for the practice of FGM in Cameroon. The author will state International instruments, Conventions, the National laws, Action plan that is to eliminate or lead to the abandonment of FGM practices in Cameroon.  The paper will conclude with suitable suggestions to eradicate the practice of FGM/C, which is against Human Rights. Keywords: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, Human Rights, Ejagham, Community, Cameroon

Are clear boundaries a prerequisite for well-functioning collaboration in home health care?: A mixed methods study2018Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 32, nr 1, s. 128-137Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine whether professional collaboration in home health care is associated with clear boundaries between principals' areas of responsibility and the professions areas of responsibility, respectively. Data were derived from a web-based survey that was carried out in one county in the middle of Sweden during spring 2013. Participants were health professionals and managers from the county council and from all the municipalities in the county. Both structured and open-ended questions were utilised. A total of 421 individuals (90% women) answered the structured questions, and 91 individuals (22% of the 421) answered the open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analysed with descriptive statistics methods, tests of independence and of correlation strength. Qualitative data were analysed with content analysis. The results from the structured questions showed that well-functioning collaboration was associated with clear boundaries between principals in the county overall, and for respondents in two of three parts of the county. Association between clear boundaries between professions and well-functioning collaboration was found in the county overall among the municipality population. However, in one part of the county, we did not find any correlations between well-functioning collaboration and clear boundaries between professions or principals, with the exception of home help services. The analysis of the open questions gave similar results as the quantitative analysis, illustrated within three themes: The significance of concepts, trust and interdependence, and collaboration as a means for well-being. The results indicate that, recently after an organisational change, clear boundaries between the principals' areas of responsibility and professions' area of responsibility respectively are necessary for effective cooperation between professionals. If the organisation and professionals have previous positive experience of colocated activities, clear boundaries do not share the same importance.

"Från vrak till världsklass": En studie om Vasamuseets marknadsföring2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Swedish Development Assistance Policy 1990- 2012: How has it changed?2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

It has gone more than 50 years since Sweden officially started organizing and giving development assistance to needing countries. There have been many different Governments with differences in both ideological background and political aim during that time, not only in Sweden but also internationally. How much has circumstances and the different rule affected the Swedish development assistance policies? To answer that question has been the main aim for this thesis.

In my study I have focused on the last 22 years, as from 1990 until 2012, and studied one budget proposition for development assistance per Government.  I have also studied some of the most important steering documents, important events and international decisions that have affected the Swedish development policies. Since the budget propositions show the ambitions of the Governments it is also their policies. It is these policies that I will analyze using the two variables: size of the aid, and the goal for the aid. The analysis is has been done using Nikolaos Zahariadis policy theory The Multiple Streams Framework.

My study shows that the policies that were adopted 50 years ago still have a large, if not settling, impact on today’s policies. The main goal for the development assistance today only differs on a few words from what was written in proposition 1962:100. The economic goal which is one of the most fundamental parts of today’s development assistance, that one percent of Sweden’s GDP should go to international aid, was first decided in 1968.

Finally, I have concluded that both the way the goal of the development assistance has been formulated and how extensive the frame of funding for development assistance has been, haven’t always percental been followed with how much money that have been spent on the budget point development work.
