Neuropsykiatriska utredningar: En kvalitativ studie utifrån ett klientperspektiv2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Human trafficking is one of the biggest social problems in Nepal with over 12.000 Nepali women and children being trafficked over the border to India every year. Despite the scale and the severe consequences of trafficking in the Nepalese society, very little is known about efforts to rehabilitate survivors of human trafficking. The purpose of this study was to illustrate the rehabilitation methods and interventions in Nepal. It is based on the results from five interviews with three different nongovernmental organizations in Nepal. The result from this study shows that counseling is the main intervention for rehabilitation of the mental health of victims of trafficking. Findings also showed that nongovernmental organizations in Nepal also use other interventions to integrate the women back into the society, such as skills training, education and physiological treatment. To better understand these interventions and to conceptualize our findings we have used different theories such as, Empowerment, Crises work and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We have also used Hasenfelds organization theory which helps to illustrate the work structure in the organizations behind the methods and interventions. Result showed that people-changing is the main organizational strategy for the nongovernmental organizations. The study has practical implications in that it highlights the need for, not only more resources, but also an awareness of the complexity of the issue of rehabilitation as well as the need for a multitude of interventions.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to understand which roles institutional personnel in HVB-homes (homes for care or living), that include animals ascribe the animals for the young clients in treatment. Using the terms

role, role-taking, primary socialisation and secondary socialisation within the perspective of symbolic interactionism, we intend to analyse the expericences from the institutional personnel of what roles the animals are ascribed in treatment of young clients. We also wanted to find out if the institutional personnel have certain expectations on the animals as tools in the treatment and whether the institutional personnel believes that the animals have important roles in the treatment of the young clients.

To find the answers of our aim and approach to our problems, we have used a qualitative study where we have interviewed six institutional personnel distributed in three different HVB-homes that uses animals in treatment of young clients. Our empirical material shows that the institutional personnel ascribe the animals a variety of roles, which among others are: friendly and familiar, meaningful, safe, comforting and soothing. Other roles that the institutional personnel ascribe the animals for the young clients are: teaching in order to develop empathy and responsibility; helping in therapy situation and having an activating role. Furthermore, the institutional personnel ascribe the animals crucial, meaningful and important roles to the young client´s positive development. The respondents also ascribe the animals a defenceless and inferior role. All respondents in the study argue unanimously that the animals are of significant importance for the treatment of the young clients. Hence, the animal can act as a link between the young client and the institutional personnel. Also, the institutional personnel believes that animals are meaningful to the young clients in many different contexts. When the animal is present the institutional personnel perceive that the young client is able to bring forth hidden emotions as well as activate the young client and help the young client to trust other individuals.

    Abstract [en]

This study is motivated by the needs to critically reflect upon development aid. Foreign aid work has since the 1950s expanded to become a large and complex enterprise, where every country is either an aid donor or aid recipient, or being both. Foreign aid has always been viewed as a moral issue and the benefits have been contested and challenged. There are few voices that are questioning the provision of emergency aid, however, development aid have had its critics since the modern idea was raised of providing aid continuously. The question is whether it could ever produce the desired effect. It has also been criticized because of the way that decisions about who to give it to are influenced by political, strategic and commercial interests of donors.

The purpose of this essay was to review the ideas that international aid workers have of development aid. This essay is based on qualitative data, where I have interviewed seven respondents about their experiences of working with international development aid. The empirical data has been interpreted using development theories specifically theories of social capital and human resources, rationality and the ideas of empowerment.

The conclusions of this essay shows that it is very complex to talk about any obvious results of development aid, though it all depends on the significance of development. What where noticeable in this essay where that hardly anyone of respondents was committed to national aid work of any kind before they took the assignment. Since they got home, most of the respondents were devoted to national aid work. In order to generate help to self-help, the result shows that essential for development aid is cooperation.

    Abstract [en]

A qualitative interview study how the normative gender images affects on women, their roles and positions in a drug abuse. The purpose of this study aims to shed a light at the consequences that the normative gender scenario inflicts on women with drug abuse and how these prejudices affects these women. Based on interviews with four different women who all lived with a drug abuse we have problematized how the gender system and the normative gender images affected them. We have used gender perspectives and social constructivism theories while analyzing the empirical basis. More specifically we use the theories of Butler about how gender constructs through performative actions and Hirdmans theories of the gender system. The paper ends with a discussion of the result and a description of how the women through the socialization process is shaped to meet the normative image of women. In the subculture they adopt a more masculine appearance in order to achieve respect and status. When the women decides to leave the drug abuse and the subculture they are expected to once again adapt to the normative image of their gender, which on a micro level becomes a rollercoaster of gender strategies for the individual woman.

    Abstract [en]

The dissertation is about people with serious functional impairments who receive support pursuant to the Swedish LSS – the Act Concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments. LSS gives compensatory support, so that a person can enjoy the right to live a life like anyone else. The user’s right to influence and self-determination is emphasized in the Act.

The overall aim of the dissertation is to describe and analyse conditions, possibilities, and limitations to influence and self-determination for people receiving LSS support. The investigation includes two interview studies. One is a study of influence and self-determination in everyday life with personal assistance. The other study focuses on people receiving some form of LSS service in combination with having a limited guardian.

The thesis shows that LSS can be understood on a general level as a judicial recognition of the group’s right to support for citizenship on individual terms. In many cases LSS service give the user influence and self-determination in everyday life. The interaction between the user and the supporting persons are crucial. If it involves mutual recognition of equality and recognition of difference – the right to be compensated for restricted abilities – then the user can act autonomously. The study deals with power and recognition as essential aspects. The analysis shows that recognition and power together contribute to an understanding of the complex situation that users of LSS measures have in their day-to-day lives. The intention behind the care is to ensure the user’s best interest. Relations and encounters around the user are affected by pastoral power with a caring purpose where support and control are interwoven. Mis-directed recognition is perceived as an infringement of integrity. The dilemma is that care that aims for something good without recognition reduces the user to an object and disrespect. The studies reveal a tension between the ideal of influence and self-determination as ”subject of rights” and the user’s everyday life. Personal assistance can be designed to contribute to achieving the intentions. Among many people receiving LSS support and having a legal guardian, the personal influence and self-determination are not distinct and guardianship is unclear. Relations are characterized by dilemmas concerning the preferential right of interpretation. The individuals are seen as “objects of care” by others. Influence and self-determination depend on a fundamental recognition of the user as subject with a need for individually adapted care. This means the right to be and act as a “subject of care”. Recognition, relations and power are keys to influence and self-determination in LSS.

Sociala relationer i ett socialt media: - En kvantitativ studie över 151 gymnasieelever i Kalmar och deras Facebook-användande2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study was to find out how young people at age 16-19 years in Kalmar, Sweden use and interact through Facebook. The questions in our questionnaire were based on three themes, these are; friendship relations on Facebook, what influence Facebook has on young people and how they choose to present themselves on Facebook.

The theory that was applied on this study is of social-psychological kind. We chose the theory because we figured it would be suitable to further explain and dispute the aim of the study.

The result shows that many different variables can matter in a study like this. We chose to look at a few, such as for example sex and age and we found out that there is a great difference between the way girls and boys use Facebook and how they choose to present themselves in this social media. Another conclusion that our study led to is that Facebook is an important tool for young people, in the meaning that they use it since it makes it easier to communicate with their friends and it also strengthens their relationships with their friends.

    Abstract [en]

The parental education groups are an activity that attracts the majority of all couples that awaits their first child. Therefore this is a forum with strong influence on the formulation of the parenting. The aim of the study was to examine how parental education within Swedish child health care, affects the construction and shaping of parenthood. We have also studied this from a gender perspective. The starting point for our understanding of parenting is that it is socially constructed. We have used the social constructivism as a comprehensive theory. Furthermore we have used Hirdman´s gender theory to understand the mechanisms that have influence on the construction of man and women in parenting. We have conducted qualitative interview studies with parents and nurses who have participated in, or have experience in leading parent education groups. In these interviews the parents stressed the community with other parents that occurred during the participation in the parent education group, as the most important part of the experience. This strengthens the image of the parent education groups as a forum where parenthood is constructed. During our interviews it also become clear that images of parenting that is being created often is different for men and women. We have also discovered that there seems to occur a conflict between parents expectations of the nurses expertise and the approach which the nurses conveys. The parents seek clear answers in terms of caring for their children, while the nurses try to empower the parents to believe in their own strength and knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

Personal assistance from a welfare perspective, offering a variety of reasons is perceived as a different design assistance than is usually there in the public social assistance depending on the strong foundations of the handicap principle autonomy and influence is in terms of how, what and when the operation is performed. The aim of our study was to highlight the handicap principle influence and autonomy in the operation of personal assistance. It is intended both to illustrate the legislature's intentions and ideologues expectations and also to examine a number of managers and personal assistants experiences of the conditions that exist for realize these principles. In order to answer our purpose and our issues, we have chosen a qualitative approach. We have first conducted a literature review and secondly implemented six interviews with personal assistants and managers. As theoretical analysis concepts are used formulations in the process and legislation as well as previous research on the handicap principle influence and self-determination and also Hasenfelds theory of human service organizations. We chose an integrated performance analysis and reporting of our study materials. The results showed that the proportion of the disability, relationships and the organization is of importance for the realization of the handicap principle influence and autonomy. This indicates an intent which is diverse and complex since there are several aspects to consider in organizations where people are the raw material.

    Abstract [en]

During the latter part of the 20th century the situation for people with intellectual disabilities in Sweden changed and developed. Clients have the right to participation and self-determination in society and in applied measures under the law of individual rights legislation; LSS. The purpose of this study is to describe and understand how team-leaders and managers in day-centres in a municipality works with participation and self-determination for clients, and what the professionals consider affects the client's possibility to self-determination and participation. The research questions intended to be answered are:

    • How does the team-leaders and managers work to enable self-determination and participation of the users in the public day-centres?

    • What does the team-leaders and managers describe and understand as enabling and limiting factors for the client’s possibility to self-determination and participation?

The study is qualitative and interviews have been held with eight interviewees, which I contacted through snowball sampling. I contacted three managers and five team-leaders in day-centres.

The result shows that the organization has different methods and approaches to enable self-determination and participation of clients in day-centres in the investigated municipality. Some forms are collective and some are individual. The results show that methods have elements of both empowerment and paternalism. The view and attitude from the team-leaders on clients as subjects or objects play a major role in how the daily work with self-determination and participation for clients is made possible. The second part of the result shows how the interviewees describe the complex interplay of various factors affecting the extent of the client's possibility to self-determination and participation. The result shows several factors that promote and many others that limit. There are many different kinds of circumstances described and understood as affecting the possibility. All informants describe the individual client's communicative ability as an important factor, and other circumstances mentioned are factors in the environment such as different actors in the client's network, workplace environment, and team-leaders personal qualities and knowledge in the field of disability.

    ABSTRACT

In this study, five people were interviewed who are involved in a drug-assisted program for opiate addiction, also called substitution program. The meaning of substitution is that these clients' drug addiction is replaced with substitute preparations, either methadone or Subutex in an orderly manner. The clients of the researcher decided to study the substitution program have all been a heavy opiate addiction for years. Their participation in the replacement program is more than two years, and those who have been around the longest have been in the program for six years, so long as the substitution program has existed in Visby. This is a qualitative study in which interviews are conducted face to face with each individual client, and the interview was unstructured in the sense that no specific issues made in advance. The interviews have been themed, and the researcher has gone through various areas of life around the respondent. The researcher was paid partly from a salutogenic perspective, and selected KASAM-theory, but also Goldberg's conspiracy theory and Ex-processes. The aim has been to try to find out which social factors play in a person's life because he or she should be able to be of abuse. It can, for example be about networking, work/employment, housing or health. The result shows that one's family, home and health are among the main reasons for their enforcement to be addiction free. But this would not be met if they had not received their replacement therapy.

Challenges and opportunities for social citizenship in the “third age”.2010Ingår i: 2010 Joint World Conference on Social Work and Social Development - Building the Agenda: Global agenda on social work and social development / [ed] IASSW, 2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Challenges and opportunities for social citizenship in the “third age”.

The aging of Europe is a social phenomenon characterized by decrease in fertility,  increase in mortality rate and higher life expectance - a challenge and opportunity to European social models.

Researchers from different academic backgrounds have tried to describe and analyse aging and different ways of entering the later part of the life course. Due to the increasing life expectancy there has been a need to divide old age in different phases - near-aged (55-64), young-old (65-74), old-old (75-84) and oldest old (85+) or an alternative division of life in four stages - the first is childhood and youth; the second contains the phase of working life and parental activities; the third age is a flexible period that starts with retirement whenever it occurs and continue until the fourth age, normally around the eighties; the fourth age consist increasing fragility and need of support in daily activities. "The Third age" can sometimes be described as “the crown of life”, empathising self-fulfilment, while the Fourth age entails dependency, fragility and death.

The combination of demographic and socioeconomic development has provided the condition for a new kind of “later lifers”. The fact that more people are getting into the third age can be analyzed in many ways. One is to realize that opportunities will arise for new constellations of power groups, groups which create new agendas with new priorities claiming their rights, by law or by m oral obligations. Another question is  to ask in what way people will use their time after retirement – another career, voluntary work,  family support or taking an active part in the community.

The presentation will focus on different aspects of social citizenship like citizen self-responsibility and choice, participation and solidarity during their third age as a preparation for a possibly postponed fourth age.

    Abstract [sv]

Personal assistance in Sweden: support and service for persons with certain functional impairments2011Ingår i: Social work review, ISSN 1178-5527, Vol. 23, nr 1/2, s. 18-28Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The political goal and the aim of Swedish disability policy today is to give persons with disabilities the same opportunities as others to participate in society and to live together with others - the principles of normalisation and integration. Two particular acts came into force on the 1st of January 1994, the Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments (LSS) and the Act concerning Assistance Compensation (LASS). LSS gives persons with severe functional disabilities, either physical or mental, the legal right to 10 different kinds of support and services. One of the most important elements in LSS is the right to personal assistance. The idea of personal assistance is to provide support that is tailor-made to the individual as far as possible and to optimise the person's influence over how the support is arranged. The aim of this article is to describe and analyse the right personal assistance from an administrative perspective. The focus is on the application and decision process and the development of this support during the years.

    ABSTRACT

Our work deals with antisocial behavior among elementary school students between 7 and 16

years in the school environment. The aim of our study was to examine how school personnel

are experiencing antisocial behavior among students from a gender perspective. We were also

interested to find out what the school's staff has of the experience of the differences and

similarities between girls 'and boys' antisocial behavior. We used gender theory, when we

analyzed our individual responses to interview questions. We made six qualitative interviews

with low-and high school teachers, assistant principals, counselors and special education

teachers training in Kalmar County. We had 17 questions for respondents to answer. Based on

the responses we received in the interviews, we divided the issues into three themes; the

school staff's approach to antisocial behavior, what school officials consider to be the

differences between girls 'and boys' antisocial behavior and what school officials consider to

be the similarities between girls 'and boys' antisocial behavior. The results of the interviews

and literature study showed that informants felt that antisocial behavior occurred when pupils

do not follow regulations in school, if students do not come to school or do not want to go to

school and also pupils' rages. The informants also promoted the importance of absenteeism,

truancy, abusive behavior, self harm, concentration difficulties, delayed language and

bullying. The informants felt that there were more boys who had an antisocial behavior than

girls, as a consequence with antisocial behavior in a different way than with girls. They were

more specific to boys than they were against girls. With girls, they discussed more and used a

    more emotional approach.

    Abstract [en]

Social workers in this study describes various experiences of the assessments of interventions for children and adolescents. Social workers experience of the many different situations where an assessment of best effort must be made on the basis of BBIC, which is the Social Services investigation records. To make this assessment, the Social workers need social assistance and support of their colleagues and manager. Knowledge mixed with experience is also an important part when it comes to being professional and not let emotions control that could otherwise be happened when the social worker meets and builds relationships with clients. Social workers are also those who will decide which achievement the client needs from the needs. We use systems theory, Hasenfeld´s theory of human services organizations  and Lipsky´s grassroots bureaucrats to analyze how social worker work with clients of different experiences, knowledge and some of their own personal values for the various operations. The efforts in our work we have examined is traditional familycare and MTFC (Multi dementional Treatment Foster Care), we have found that there are different arguments for different actions, but the assessments are made virtually the same assessment model. There are requirements that govern the operation of which is matched with the objectives and resources administration. Social worker also believes that social work is a game where we do not know how the results will be.

    Abstract

Keywords: Abuse, addiction, relapse, relapse prevention.

Abuse is a major problem and leads to negative consequences for the individual, such as illness, criminality and death. It’s also a big problem in the society, because the most common crimes are drug-related and the consequences lead to high economic costs. In order to overcome an addiction, treatment is often required. It's common to relapse during treatment before the clients have achieved stability in being drug- free. This essay aims to examine how the relapse is perceived by different therapist, how the relapse is treated and what measures therapists can take on a preventive basis.

    Questions

    • What perceptions are there about what a relapse can be?

    • How is a relapse treated?

    • How can the preventive work be done?

Six interviews were done at the therapist’s workplaces and the analysis of the material has been implemented in a hermeneutic approach, and with the psychodynamic and the behavioristic theory. The result shows that despite of which model the treatment is based on, a disease-oriented or a behavior-oriented model, it’s not differ with each other when it comes to relapse, how a relapse is treated and how the preventive work can be done. We think that it’s interesting because the models have different approach when it comes to human behavior. The disease-oriented model is characterized by a psychodynamic ground, it assume that the human behavior is affected by our functions in our inner body, while the behavioristic theory assumes that our behavior is taught.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine male social workers experiences of working in a female dominated work. The aim with this study was to find out how men perceive working with mostly women and how this effects their construction of masculinity. The theories that have been used in this study are a social constructive perspective on gender, Chodorows (1995) Theory of Socialization and Connells (2008) Theory of Masculinities. The method used in this study is qualitative interviews based on the experiences of five male social workers in Sweden. The interviews have been recorded and retailed in text in its full version, to enable analysis out of the above mentioned theories and earlier studies. The result of the study shows that the men in this study experience mostly benefits from working with women and they feel appreciated as being men. At the sametime they experience some difficulties when it comes to communication, where they perceive the female colleagues to use a more subtle way of communicating. The male social workers in this study also experience that they get certain expectations due to their gender. These expectations consist in being able to deal with clients that are aggressive and another expectation is to function as a male role model for their clients. The way the male social workers in this study construct their masculinity in this female dominated work, consists of a differentiation between them and the female colleagues. This differentiation is influenced by a hegemonic masculinity that can be described as the male stereotype, which builds on a subordination of women (Connell 2008).

    Child Poverty in a Scandinavian Welfare Context: From Children’s Point of View2011Ingår i: Child Indicators Research, ISSN 1874-897X, E-ISSN 1874-8988, Vol. 4, nr 2, s. 283-299Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The focus for this article is child poverty in a Nordic welfare state context. With data from two qualitative studies from Sweden and Norway, we discuss child poverty from the children’s point of view, in the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, articles 27 and 28. In article 27, food, housing and clothing are mentioned as particularly important for an adequate standard of living. In poverty studies where children’s voices are being heard there has been little focus on these necessities. We find that a few of the children living with economic hardship experience a lack of necessities such as food, housing and clothing. We also explore whether children experience limited possibilities in relation to education. Despite of the state policies recognition of equal opportunities in relation to schooling, we find differences due to economy. In some cases this leads to young people dropping out of school to work. Overall we find that children take responsibility in relation to their families’ financial situation. In the final discussion we pay attention to the powerlessness of the children’s situation between the parents and the states’ responsibilities for providing for the children’s basic needs. We argue for the need for a discussion about the children’s position between rights and protection. If poor children are loaded with more responsibilities than their peers from better-off families, it will add to the burden of worry and distress in an already complicated situation.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine social workers working process in social assistance with focus on the child´s perspective. We were interested in learning about the existence of variations in approach and attitude between two municipalities. Question to be answered about what methods and approaches used by social workers to include the child´s perspective in the process of social assistance. Another question to be answered about what the manner in which social workers took into account the child´s perspective when the families apply for social assistance in relation to the operations and requirement. To fulfill the purpose, qualitative methods were used. Interviews were conducted with six social workers, three social workers in each municipality. The results of the interviews were analyses based on research and knowledge reviews and based on theory of street level bureaucracy.

The study´s results show variations between the two municipalities in the social workers account of the child´s perspective in social assistance. The results also show that there was no established method or model in municipalities that made it clear to examiners how the child´s perspective should be taken into account in work with families. Instead the social workers of laws, policies, local conditions and the officers´ own discretion assumed how to best take in to account the child´s perspective in the work. When families applied for social assistance, social workers always tried to consider the child´s perspective. Families with children had the opportunity to be granted extra efforts that benefited children and the requirements were not as strict for families with children, as for other individuals without children who applied for social assistance.

    Abstract [en]

A multi professional team use different professional skills to a specific target. The people in the team complement each other to achieve the best performance possible. Professional identity is a mix between the professional and personal identity. Social identities, like professional identity, is a product of social categorization and social comparison. The purpose of this study was to examine how increased cooperation in cross-disciplinary teams has affected the professional identity of home care staff. The method I used to gather my material were focus groups with home care staff in relation to their workplace. Five focus groups were conducted and formed the basis of the results. I used parts of and got inspired from the hermeneutic approach in the analysis of my empirical findings. The results were interpreted by the social identity theory and the concepts of identity, professional identity and the dual task. The results show that home care staff finds it difficult to describe what their role is in the profession. The team's work has affected the staff to feel stronger in their profession and occupation. They have been able to learn from the other team members and have got a deeper understanding of the other team member’s profession. They also believe that the home care staff group has become more of a united group now that they know more about each other's work, work more equal and have more discussions within the group. Home care staff professional identity has been influenced, as all work within the team goes toward a common explicit goal. This has made stronger professional identity within the group and they can identify themselves more with each other. The teams work towards the common goal has also contributed to that they experience cooperation, understanding and affinity with the other team members. This has broadened their professional identity and they have become part of a new group - the team.

The results of this study are based on interviews with four persons working in managerial positions on different HVB-homes and shows the difficulties of having a children’s rights perspective in a context where a higher level of control is necessary to protect the best interest of the child. The study suggests that the question of balance between children’s right and the need for controlling system of rules needs to be further discussed to improve, and as far as possible guarantee that these adolescence receive best possible care and do not suffer unfair restrictions on liberties.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to, on the basis of normalization and autonomy; investigate how staff working in group homes discusses about sexuality of people with an intellectual disability. Our study was based on ten semi-structured interviews of both care staff and heads of group homes to get responses from different levels within the same organization. The empirical material was analyzed through the theory of social constructivism, which focuses on how we construct the world through interaction and language, and the normalization principle whose goal is that all people with developmental disabilities should have the opportunity to live like all other people. We view these theories as useful to gain understanding of the questions in our study. The result of this study showed that the subject only comes up for discussion when problems arise, that the communication on the subject is inadequate and more discussion is requested. Further the result illustrated that staff strives for people with developmental disabilities to feel they have autonomy but this is also a challenge in their work.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how the social services are applying the sections of the law concerning custody transfer within foster care. More specifically the aim was to find out what circumstances are underlying the social services decision to go through with a custody transfer within the foster care, and to find out which difficulties and possibilities the law offers when it comes to this process. The study was based on interviews with six respondents, within the social services, who have great experiences working with these issues. The study concluded that there are several factors which affects the decision whether to implement at custody transfer or not, and some of these are the child’s attachment, the child’s fundamental needs and consent from the involving parties in the case. The study also concluded that some of the difficulties with the process involve a contradictory law and the lack of support to the child´s new family after the custody transfer has been implemented.  Some of the positive aspects with custody transfer within the foster care, that the study showed, includes that the child get to live with the family the child regards as his or her own, and a reduced amount of concern and stress, to the benefit of a more stable and safe environment. The analysis was based on two different perspectives: the attachment theory and Maslow´s theory on the hierarchy of the human´s needs

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Society´s demands on individuals has changed, which can make young people feel increasingly depressed and causing lower self-esteem. Lower self-esteem contributes to greater aggression. If an individual is violent or has a positive attitude towards violence, could indicate that the individual does not feel good. This study aimed to identify high school adolescents' self-esteem, aggression and attitudes towards violence and examine the relationship between the variables. We also examined whether there are differences from a gender perspective. In order to answer the purpose we have constructed a quantitative survey among Kalmar´s high school youth in grades three. The questionnaire consisted of two self-rating scales and four vignettes. The results were analyzed including social learning theory and cognitive dissonance theory. The study showed that Kalmar´s high school youth in general was fine but that the woman felt that they have lower self-esteem than men. Most of the young people saw themselves as not agressive, women´s and men´s average on the aggression scale was relatively smooth. Most of the young people had negative attitudes towards violence, but women had more negative attitudes towards violence than men. There were correlations between self-esteem and aggression and between aggression and attitudes towards violence. The study also showed that there were some differences between the sexes.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this quantitative study has been to investigate teenager’s perception of obsessions and compulsive acts. Teenager’s perceptions and experiences as well as connections between the taboos surrounding the topic and the perception have been examined. The study has taken in to consider gender perspective, in regards to certain topics. As a result the differences and similarities between male and females’ perspective, regarding the topic, have been highlighted. Thus, our sample group contained teenagers, as a vital part has been to highlight their perspective. The teenagers that have been participating in the study have been in school year 9, meaning ages fifteen to sixteen. Altogether a total of eighty-eight students have taken part in the study, split between two schools, one based in a middle sized county and one in a small size county, both based in Sweden. The study has used a survey as a data collection model. The students, in the sample group, have answered a questionnaire which surrounds the topic. The answers have generated some interesting results and by the means of labelling theory and the notion of taboo, the results have been analysed. The study has established how labelling, stigmatization and taboo can be seen as cohesive with teenager’s perception. With relation to earlier studies and the results, our reasoning surrounding information and its significant function is highlighted.

"Så att få ungarna att förstå att dom är guld, det tycker jag är, det är våran uppgift": En kvalitativ studie av relationerna mellan ungdomar och behandlare på behandlingskollektivet Hassela i Klintehamn, Gotland.2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my study was to see what kind of relationships there were between the youth and the social workers in the treatment home Hassela in Klintehamn, Gotland. The social workers work for six weeks day and night by living together with the youth. I also wanted to examine what happens when there were conflicts between them as signs of tensions in the relationships. In addition to this I wanted to study the relations between power and influence in their relationships where Hassela strives for democracy. My questions were the following; How do the youth and the staff describe the relationships between them? How do conflicts work between them at Hassela? What does the relationship between power and influence look like?

The study is based on qualitative interviews with four clients and four social workers. The theoretical perspective I used were Skau’s discussion of power and help in the relationship between client and social worker.

The conclusions of the study are that intimate relationships, similar to family relationships, form between the clients and the social workers. Conflict is considered a natural part of everyday life and that they are solvable and good for the relationships. There are no formal rules or regulations regarding conflicts for the staff which lets the staff make up their own ways of dealing with conflicts. The social workers create and control most of the youth’s daily life in forms of everyday activities that they have to be a part of. However, the youth can choose between the options available and have lots of free time during the afternoons and nights. It is not entirely clear what and how the youth can use their influence though Hassela strives for democracy.

    Abstract [en]

Author: Martina Holgersson och Pranvera VishajSupervisor: Matts MosessonTitle: “A study about how Social Services understand and put child perspective into practice”The purpose of this study is to describe and understand how the child perspective is perceived and put into practice by the Social Services. Our questions were: “How is the child perspective perceived by the Social Services?” and “In what way is the child perspective put into practice in the Social Services’ work?” Our approach to knowledge is based on the hermeneutic tradition of knowledge. The essay rests upon semi-structured interviews with ten Social Services’ workers. We have analysed our results from the theory of actions where we have applied analytical ideas; the five P’s and actor and objective perspective. Our main findings in the study were; the Social Services’ workers regarded the child perspective as a complex and hard to define concept. Furthermore, the Social Services’ workers considered to think the fundamental apprehension of the child perspective; is children’s well-fare and protection from abuse. From which angle they choose to see the child perspective; the child’s, the parents or the professionals vary. The Social Services’ workers experienced the children were being implicated in the work. The reports are written from both angels, children and parents point of view. A special interest and importance from the Social Services’ workers were children being involved through-out the inquiry process as at decision-making. The child perspective doesn’t have to be crucial at a settlement. Based on our findings and our theory we can draw the conclusion that the scope the Social Services’ workers have in their work can influence how the child perspective is perceived and carried out and how it should be applied.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how social services workers describe, the risk of being exposed to threats and violence in their profession. Six social services workers were interviewed, four from the Welfare Office in a major city and two from the Child and Family Services in a minor city. Results showed that the majority of social services workers consider themselves exposed in their profession, meaning that they feel there's a risk of a violent or threatening situation occurring in their work situation. All interviewees had experiences from some sort of threat or violence in a work related context and they attested that non-personal assaults, such as threats made through telephone, email and answering machines are more common than verbal assaults made in personal meetings. Being prepared and listening to ones intuition is a way of dealing with exposure when meeting with a client. By working in pairs you can decrease the risk of being exposed in a violent/threatening situation. Several of the interviewees pointed out that they are more tolerant to certain clients in order to cope with their work situation.

    Abstract [sv]
