Framtidsbedömningar: hur organisationer förhåller sig till bedömningar om framtiden2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this lucubration is to investigate hairstylist student’s apprehension about the apprentice diploma. The apprentice diploma is an occupation verification indicating on the hairstylist’s knowledge and competence, and it is the only verification in the business that you can use in order to measure the students knowledge. Three students out of thirty, in year 2009, chose to graduate with an apprentice diploma. Based on these figures I am to investigate six graduating students opinion using qualitative interviews. Another quest is to inform and gain interest about the apprentice diploma.  The result demonstrate what earlier research already shows, amongst other things, that the students no longer have the practical knowledge needed in order to come to a worksite and therefore find it difficult to work as an apprentice. The business expects the students to be self-driven and dissatisfaction from the school and the business increases. Is the occupation as a hairstylist about to loose its profession or are you allowed to call yourself a professional without a proper diploma?

Musikteorins applicering på ensembleämnet: - En studie i hur gymnasieelever anser att de använder sina musikteorikunskaper praktiskt.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Nutidens musikteori: -En undersökning av musikteorilärares metoder.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sustainopreneurship - Business with a Cause: Conceptualizing Entrepreneurship for Sustainability2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a tentative definition of the concept of sustainopreneurship - in the most simplified form described as entrepreneurship and innovation for sustainability - “Business with a Cause”. The concept takes its departure from generic entrepreneurship theory development, its extensions and further contextualization into the domains of sustainability, primarily through recent research. A literature review provides core references related to the conceptualization of sustainability entrepreneurship. A claim is made that there is a need for further conceptual development, especially viewed in contrast to the empirical material and experience, when digesting the literature that deals with concepts preceding sustainopreneurship. These concepts are eco-preneurship and social entrepreneurship, as well as current descriptions of sustainability entrepreneurship, including some sources where the word sustainopreneurship in itself is introduced for the first time. The methodological approach used when conducting the literature review is an analytical stance. Additional analysis, integrating and extending the reviewed sources, leads us to a performative definition of sustainopreneurship. This tentative definition is presented as an imagined prospective wordbook entry in a “future history” format. One of the key distinctions in between entrepreneurship in general and sustainopreneurship, is that sustainopreneurship is mission- and cause oriented - business activity is used as a means to solve sustainability-related problems. In short, to turn business activity from being a part of the problem to be a part of the solution.

This world of ideas is set in contrast to the practical enaction of On a Mission Sweden – Inc. Ass, and the seven brands developed from this business platform – Club PuLS™, DJ Anders, SEEDS Sustainability Investment Fund, SEEDS Magazine, Ignition®, SLICE Services and Publishing™ and S*E*N*S*A. Three of these only reached conceptual stage for future potential launch. Four got established, and of these; one idle, two spun off in their own ventures, and one intended to spin off during 2007. Entrepreneurship as a concept to describe the nature of these ventures was experienced as insufficient, until 2003, when the concept of “sustainopreneurship” was found by serendipity. The conceptual dissatisfaction with “entrepreneurship-as-usual”, together with finding this new concept, made me instantly embrace this concept in the moment when stumbled upon. Another major driver for this work is a strong aspiration to take the abstract, general words and statements from world summits and conferences to the practical, hands on, down to earth, grass-root, local level with real world interaction to make possibilities of the problems related to the sustainability agenda. The ventures created from a time span of over seven years, forms a vast, deep, dense, intense and extremely rich “gross” empirical base from where the study collects its selective “net” material relevant for this study. The methodological approach to make sense and use of these serial and parallel self-initiated and self-experienced venturing processes is enactive research. The enactive research provides an opportunity to test the suggested formulation of sustainopreneurship – from the abstract idea to the concrete interaction. A special form of ethnography is used named self-ethnography. The ventures who have proven to perpetually evolve, develop and sustain are focused; On a Mission Sweden – Inc. Ass. and Ignition®. These ventures have provided the most significant change in both idea development, practice, and effect - both regards my inner world of insight breakthroughs and personal development, and the findings on a more abstract, conceptual, theoretical level. In order to highlight the three key dimensions of the concept, some key courses of events have been selected where they are considered to hold illustrative power: Firstly, the central events before the formalized venturing. Secondly, the milestones singled out during the venturing. Thirdly, some post-venture reflections around the process as such. The ethnographic style of the tales of the field is predominantly realist, with some degree impressionist.

    The final chapter summarizes and presents an intermediary conclusion whether the concept has met the test and also discusses the meaning of the exercise as a whole. My own function is examined and evaluated briefly. The promise of the conceptual introduction is contrasted towards the approaches-as-usual regards the sustainability agenda that introduced the thesis, and some key points are delivered. Venturing in the name of sustainability allows agents to “act outside the box” related to the institutional framework that governs the structures that is set to solve the problems today, equipped with an upgraded mindset, operating with an agility made possible by the flexibility offered by creative business organizing. The quest to make (business) opportunities from the agenda set by sustainability, and organizing upon them in itself creates a sustaining meaning internally within the team to be able to ride through the storms – the same force traditionally driving NGO’s “not-for profit”, now coupled with a good business sense operating “for-profit”, with profit as a means, not as an end in itself - in a new in-between-land named “for prosperity”. When properly understood from knowledge increasing among other stakeholders than the sustainopreneurial teams and their closest supporters and early adopters, the welcoming of sustainopreneurial ventures are destined to increase. Proliferation and diffusion of sustainopreneurship in idea, applied interaction and reflective practice beyond this point can turn sustainability to be the main driver for business activity, internalizing the external sustainability demands as the primary purpose of the business creation and idea, forming its strategic intent, and integrated in its “organizational DNA”. Sustainopreneurship holds the power to give even more leverage to forces emerging from the business world that contributes to sustainability. Throughout the process, a question has been emerging to serve as a new opening for further interaction, where the claim is that sustainopreneurship delivers a good part of the answer;

How can we innovate and interact in order to reach a critical mass of people and energies to create a sustainable world?

Hur värderas en trend?: Lagerredovisning i konfektionsbranschen2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Title: How is a trend valued? Inventory accounting in the clothing industry.

Background: Inventory is one of the major asset items in the balance sheet for clothing companies. It is therefore important that the valuation of it becomes fair and provides accurate information to the company's stakeholders. As trends today are moving faster, companies' inventories are subjected to greater obsolescence than before, making it harder to value. This means that companies in their pursuit of legitimate inventory accounting need to relate to their social context. This will be the basis for the study's problem and purpose, which therefore aims to identify the social factors that underlie inventory reporting in clothing companies.

Purpose: The study intends to provide an understanding of how the social context shapes the accounting of inventories in the clothing industry. The purpose is to supplement the knowledge of how clothing companies responds to the challenges and uncertainties in inventory accounting.

Method: Based on existing literature, a social context has been drawn up, to which companies need to relate its inventory report. The thesis then consists of a qualitative interview study with companies in the clothing industry. The purpose of the interviews is also to identify additional factors that may affect how companies inventory accounting shapes.

Results / Conclusions: The results of the survey shows that companies today are aware of the problems with fast-paced trends, but that's nothing they take into major account in their inventory accounting. It also appears that the inventory valuation in the industry today is standardized.

Videokompression och användarnytta2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During the last decade the conditions for the music industry have been changed significantly. With the dropping sales of physical phonograms and the increasing illegal file sharing, the record labels have been forced to adapt and thus seek alternative sources of income next to the traditional sales of phonograms. Our purpose was to investigate how smaller Swedish record labels adapt themselves to the changing environment within the music industry and which new alternative sources of income they can use to finance their music production. To do this we used a deductive approach where we started by researching theories we thought were relevant to the subject, which we then used to get valuable information out of our informants.

From our empirical investigations it appears that the independent record labels are rather positive about the future and that they will be able to survive, even though they will have to change their ways of working to a large extent. Our results show that the record labels as we know then will disappear. Instead, the future will consist of music companies where the phonograms mainly will function in marketing purposes and the income will come from other sources like advertising, sponsorship and synchronisation et cetera. The record labels, as we know them, are indeed a fading phenomenon.

MRSA – EN FÖLJETONG UTAN SLUT: Effekter av olika åtgärder i smittskyddsarbete mot MRSA 2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Enligt Smittskyddsinstitutet (2010) drabbades 1479 patienter förra året i Sverige.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study examines pedagogues’ thoughts about children’s understanding of death, and their reactions to the death of a relative. The aim is also to examine pedagogues’ thoughts about their part in supporting bereaved children, and how they wish to do so. Method: Seven pedagogues, who work with six to nine year old children, were interviewed. The interviews were kept individually in quiet rooms. Result: The pedagogues thought that children’s thoughts about and reactions to death is individual. The pedagogues also meant that it was their responsibility to support bereaved children, but the children’s wishes decided in what way it should be done. The pedagogues exemplified strategies in how to support bereaved children e.g. talking and listening to them, hugging them and letting them know that they are there for them if they need them. Other strategies were reading death-related books to them or letting them watch pictures of the relative who is deceased and talk to them about it. The pedagogues also thought it was important to keep an eye on the bereaved child in case the grief affected the school achievements or if they started to feel worse. In that case some specialist would have to help the child to feel better.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Belöningssystem i hotellbranschen: Dess utformning och bidrag till målkongruens2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Comment se porte le français au lycée suédois ?: Évolution du rôle des plans d’études dans l’enseignement des langues vivantes 2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate the forest in the national park on the Blue Maiden Island and compare with mainland forest data. The study was made in a quantitative way. The results from the field measurement were related to data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory.

Oak, Scots pine and Lime were the most common tree species and constituted 47, 18 and 16 % of basal area, respectively, on the island.

The mean heigt was 7 m and the volume of living trees was on average 72 m³/ha and dead wood 30 m³/ha. The average age at breast height was 137 years and the oldest tree was an oak with the age of 335 years at breast height. The amount of dead wood constituted 40 % of the total volume. Disturbances have had influence on the forest on the Island. To what extent cannot be determined without further investigations.

    Abstract [sv]

Product Placement: A study about Swedes attitude towards product placements in Movies and TV-shows2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Marketers have always been looking for alternative ways to reach the target population with their messages. One approach that has grown the last decades is product placement that has become a large arena for companies to involve in their marketing communication. It has been shown that people tend to dislike traditional advertisement such as commercial brakes in TV and tries to avoid it by switching channel. Since product placement is a type of advertisement that is embedded in a movie or TV-show and cannot be zapped away without missing the story of the movie or TV-show, it is a good opportunity to reach out with a company’s message.

Several studies have been done in the field of mapping the attitudes towards product placement but no research has been done with the Swedish audience in focus. Therefore the purpose of this thesis is: “…to investigate what attitudes the Swedish audience has towards product placements in Movies and TV-shows”, which will lead to a greater knowledge for Swedish marketing managers about the attitudes towards product placement in Sweden.

This thesis is a quantitative study with a descriptive single cross-sectional design. The data was retrieved through a questionnaire online. The sample frame was generation Y which is people that are between the ages 18-35.

The study showed that the general attitude towards product placement is positive for the Swedish audience. When it comes to the different dimensions of product placement; visual-only, audio-only and a combination audio-visual it is shown that the visual placements is seen as the most positive way to place a product in a movie or a TV-show. It could also be seen several similarities with previous studies that prominent placement has a lower attitude while a subtle placements has a more positive attitude.

Nätverksoptimering: Bästa möjliga tillgänglighet till lägsta möjliga länkkostnad2012Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vilket val gör företag gällande periodiseringsfonder?: En undersökning om vilka faktorer som påvekar beslutet2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a qualitative internet research about people with Asperger syndrome and their thoughts and opinions about the difficulties that occurs in the environment outside the home and their experiences of Internet. We have analyzed Internets social influences for those with Asperger syndrome, as a consequence of the difficulties that they meet in other environments. The constructed communities in the environment outside the home and the social interaction that occurs there is not adjusted for those with the diagnosis. This leads to difficulties to be there for those with Asperger syndrome. By doing a content analysis of the assembled data from a community site on the Internet, we found out that the environment on Internet is more comfortable for those with the diagnosis in several ways. A lot of people who earlier felt alone and excluded has thanks to the Internet been able to develop a healthy social life.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis has analysed incident and maintenance reports concerning the FirstMarine Regiment’s combat boat maintenance system. The aim was to find thosepossible deficiencies and shortcomings causing reduced accessibility. In addition, thethesis includes an analysis of maintenance-related statistics reported in 2008. Byusing these reports and statistical data as our factual base, we have examined thoseparts of the maintenance system and its components most frequently affected bydeficiencies and shortcomings. The thesis presents the most likely reasons for thesenegative occurrences, but also recommendations regarding measures that willincrease the overall accessibility.During our research, however, it also became evident that the main and most likelyreason for the reduced accessibility was the inherent capacity of the maintenancesystem (DIUS) used by the Royal Swedish Navy. In conclusion, this system is notsufficiently adapted to the great number of naval units and personnel who are usingit. Further, the naval personnel operating the system sometimes lack adequatetraining.

    Abstract [en]

This is a study about how realtors or estate agents market their services in social media. Social media is an upcoming channel in marketing and is becoming more important every day. The user generated content on internet is a new way of communication where companies don’t have to be considered as soulless, if companies use it correctly. This study investigates estate agents efforts to market their services in these channels and how they do it. The study has interviewed four different realtors, marketing executives and a communication office. The motivation for the study is that realtors tend to market their services like they always have but with a consistently changing market, so should their marketing do. The method has been interviews and interpretation of data with the knowledge of my university studies. The results of the study has shown that realtors today are aware of a new channels, such as facebook and twitter, but do not know how to use it and are learning by doing. A conclusion is that in a near future, customers will see a lot more marketing in these channels from these consignors.

Är du privat eller offentlig?: En studie om vad som utmärker marknadskommunikationen i en privat respektive offentlig organisation.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The market communication in organisations is vital to manage the competition. Studies have shown the importance of market communication in both private and public organisations.

Since the past decade market communication has been acknowledged as an instrument to provide the organisations target group with valid information.

This thesis is a study about the differences in market communication between private and public organisations. To manage this we asked ourselves the question:

“- What distinguish the market communication in a private respective a public organisation?”

We have done qualitative interviews to get the best result for our study. We have interviewed both types of organisations and our respondents have leading strategic position in their organisations.

Our research highlights important differences between private and public organisations in matter of tactics in market communication.

In conclusion the result shows a great difference in how an organization is managing their communicative strategies all depending on if it is a private owned company or a public organisation.

Agricultural Productivity, Land Access and Gender Equality: Based on a minor field study conducted in Zambia 20132013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Africa’s agricultural productivity is the lowest in the world. At the same time the largest proportion of poor people live in rural areas where they are dependent upon agriculture for their survival. Agriculture is thus an essential to consider when fighting poverty. Women make up 70-80 % of the labour force in the agricultural sector and produce about 80% of the food for the household. Women are at the same time dependent upon their husbands for access to agricultural land and financial resources. Despite the important role of agriculture for poverty reduction, the sector continues to lack attention from both governments and international organizations, and the fact that gender discrimination is a cause of poverty is rarely raised.

This thesis aims to investigate, through a field study in Zambia, which conditions and circumstances that create low agricultural productivity, based on how the peasants themselves perceive it. The paper aims to problematize the question of low agricultural productivity by looking at the issue of land access and gender equality. This thesis takes its methodological point of departure in a qualitative ethnographic field study with semi-structured interviews. In order to analyze the peasants situation Sustainable Rural Livelihood has been used as an analytical framework.

The result of this thesis shows that peasants’ productivity mainly is hampered by the fact that they lack access to productive and financial resources. The overall difficult macro-economic situation in Zambia, together with the fact that investments from the government in the agricultural sector and in rural development is small, contributes to a situation that hinders peasants’ opportunities to increase productivity with other means than just working harder. Furthermore, the result shows that women experience gender discrimination in accessing land, credits and education. The difference between men and women is structural and is the result of unequal access to resources, which have given men more power and influence. Hence, women have become dependent upon their husbands to gain access to land and financial resources, implying that women become both vulnerable and isolated. Access to land would strengthen women’s economical dependency and give them the possibility to control the income and investment made in agriculture.

    Abstract [en]

The question about economic inequality belongs possibly to one of the most controversial questions throughout history. The opinions regarding the pros and cons of economic inequality, but mostly regarding the degree of economic inequality are divided. Initially it was assumed that economic inequality was a precondition for economic growth since it generates investment and is essential for the creation of incentives. New research, however, suggest that growth and economic inequality has a negative relationship, especially when considered in the long run. If so, this is of great importance for economic and political decisions. Moreover, it is considered that a high degree of economic inequality prevents an inclusive political and economic society that could have a setback on the economic growth rate. This paper, taking its starting point in a mixed method, examines the relationship between economic inequality and economic growth.

Vilka faktorer upplevs som begränsande för unga kvinnors sexualitet utifrån ett genuspsykologiskt perspektiv?: En studie med tio intervjuer av kvinnor i åldrarna 25-30 år2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cuamba Municipality, the capital of water?: A case study of the inclusion of female interests in water governance in Cuamba municipality, Mozambique.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine if female interests have been included in different levels of water governance in Cuamba municipality, Mozambique in order to understand if gender equality and women empowerment is being addressed at the grassroots level. In Sub-Saharan Africa women generally have the responsibility of fetching water and are therefore directly affected by the quality and accessibility of water and sanitation services. Though gender mainstreaming and policies addressing gender equality has been adopted in Mozambique, the actual difference that these measures have made to the lives of women in Mozambique is questionable.  A qualitative single case study has been conducted, by interviewing government institutions, the private sector and civil society actors at district and municipality level in Cuamba. The findings reveal that it is the municipality government, FIPAG and the traditional leaders that are the main actors with the power over the distribution of water in Cuamba and through a joint effort the water situation has improved a lot in recent years. The interest in water among women was mainly focused to having a water source while the main interests among men was to have a shorter distance as well as shorter queues to the water source. An abductive method of the analytical framework consisting of four dimensions of water governance and rethinking em(power)ment, gender and development has been used to guide the analysis of the findings in a more comprehensive manner thus investigating the power structures in each dimension of water governance with a focus on women empowerment. The result indicates that women living in the urban areas were more empowered in all notions of power due to better access to information and education thus giving them more time and individual knowledge to collectively and individually demand power over the distribution of water. Due to lack of empowerment among women living in the rural areas, these women demanded less regarding the distribution of water and had less individual understanding of water governance. Furthermore the interests among women living in the rural areas were mostly included in the decision-making processes as it generally concerned having access to a clean water source. As the women in the urban areas demanded more and had more interests in water governance it became clear that the female interests in the urban areas were not included in decision-making. By including more women in decision-making bodies in water governance and putting more emphasis on education for women these issues could be addressed.

Sulfite is the most important antioxidant in beer. Quantification of sulfite is crucial due to restrictions as an additive and for investigative purposes of sulfite and thiol-containing proteins role as redox mediators. A method based on fluorometric determination of sulfite and thiol-containing compounds in beer was developed. The analytes were derivatized with ThioGlo®  1 and subsequently separated on a C18 column with wide pore size, featuring a high-performance liquid chromatography system equipped with fluorescence detector. Two peaks corresponding to sulfite derivatives were observed. The two derivatives were assessed with exact mass spectrometry and both provided identical mass spectra. To compensate for adverse matrix effects in samples a matrix-matched calibration curve is proposed. Sulfite diminished in an inverse exponential manner upon hydrogen peroxide addition in beer. The amount of thiol groups decreased when beer was subjected to oxidative stress, thus confirming its antioxidative role in beer.

Determination of Sulfite in Beer Based on Fluorescent Derivatives and Liquid Chromatographic Separation2012In: Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists, ISSN 0361-0470, E-ISSN 1943-7854, Vol. 70, no 4, p. 296-302Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A method was developed for quantification of sulfite in beer based on derivatization with the maleimide-derived probe ThioGlo I followed by separation of fluorescent adducts by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection. Sulfite gave two ThioGlo 1 derivatives and it was shown by mass spectrometry that both had identical mass spectra. Matrix effects were observed when constructing sulfite standard curves in different beers and, therefore, use of a matrix-matched calibration curve is proposed. ThioGlo I was found to generate fluorescent adducts with both bound and free sulfite, providing a quantification of the total sulfite content in beer. The limit of quantification of sulfite was 0.6 mg/L and the method can be used for quantification of sulfite in highly colored beers.

Discovery of high and very high-energy emission from the BL Lacertae object SHBL J001355.9-1854062013In: Astronomy and Astrophysics, ISSN 0004-6361, E-ISSN 1432-0746, Vol. 554, p. A72-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The detection of the high-frequency peaked BL Lac object (HBL) SHBL J001355.9-185406 (z = 0.095) at high (HE; 100 MeV < E < 300 GeV) and very high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is reported. Dedicated observations were performed with the H. E. S. S. telescopes, leading to a detection at the 5.5 sigma significance level. The measured flux above 310 GeV is (8.3 +/- 1.7(stat) +/- 1.7(sys)) x 10(-13) photons cm(-2) s(-1) (about 0.6% of that of the Crab Nebula), and the power-law spectrum has a photon index of Gamma = 3.4 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.2(sys). Using 3.5 years of publicly available Fermi-LAT data, a faint counterpart has been detected in the LAT data at the 5.5 sigma significance level, with an integrated flux above 300 MeV of (9.3 +/- 3.4(stat) +/- 0.8(sys)) x 10(-10) photons cm(-2) s(-1) and a photon index of Gamma = 1.96 +/- 0.20(stat) +/- 0.08(sys). X-ray observations with Swift-XRT allow the synchrotron peak energy in vF(v) representation to be located at similar to 1.0 keV. The broadband spectral energy distribution is modelled with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model and the optical data by a black-body emission describing the thermal emission of the host galaxy. The derived parameters are typical of HBLs detected at VHE, with a particle-dominated jet.

HESS and Fermi-LAT discovery of gamma-rays from the blazar 1ES 1312-4232013In: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, ISSN 0035-8711, E-ISSN 1365-2966, Vol. 434, no 3, p. 1889-1901Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A deep observation campaign carried out by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) on Centaurus A enabled the discovery of gamma-rays from the blazar 1ES 1312-423, 2 degrees away from the radio galaxy. With a differential flux at 1 TeV of phi(1 TeV) = (1.9 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 0.4(sys)) x 10(-13) cm(-2) s(-1) TeV-1 corresponding to 0.5 per cent of the Crab nebula differential flux and a spectral index Gamma = 2.9 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.2(sys), 1ES 1312-423 is one of the faintest sources ever detected in the very high energy (E > 100 GeV) extragalactic sky. A careful analysis using three and a half years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) data allows the discovery at high energies (E > 100 MeV) of a hard spectrum (Gamma = 1.4 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.2(sys)) source coincident with 1ES 1312-423. Radio, optical, UV and X-ray observations complete the spectral energy distribution of this blazar, now covering 16 decades in energy. The emission is successfully fitted with a synchrotron self-Compton model for the non-thermal component, combined with a blackbody spectrum for the optical emission from the host galaxy.

Identification of HESS J1303-631 as a pulsar wind nebula through gamma-ray, X-ray, and radio observations2012In: Astronomy and Astrophysics, ISSN 0004-6361, E-ISSN 1432-0746, Vol. 548, p. A46-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aims. The previously unidentified very high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray source HESS J1303-631, discovered in 2004, is re-examined including new data from the H. E. S. S. Cherenkov telescope array in order to identify this object. Archival data from the XMM-Newton X-ray satellite and from the PMN radio survey are also examined. Methods. Detailed morphological and spectral studies of VHE gamma-ray emission as well as of the XMM-Newton X-ray data are performed. Radio data from the PMN survey are used as well to construct a leptonic model of the source. The gamma-ray and X-ray spectra and radio upper limit are used to construct a one zone leptonic model of the spectral energy distribution (SED). Results. Significant energy-dependent morphology of the gamma-ray source is detected with high-energy emission (E > 10 TeV) positionally coincident with the pulsar PSR J1301-6305 and lower energy emission (E < 2 TeV) extending similar to 0.4 degrees to the southeast of the pulsar. The spectrum of the VHE source can be described with a power-law with an exponential cut-off N-0 = (5.6 +/- 0.5) x 10(-12) TeV-1 cm(-2) s(-1), Gamma = 1.5 +/- 0.2) and E-cut = (7.7 +/- 2.2) TeV. The pulsar wind nebula (PWN) is also detected in X-rays, extending similar to 2-3' from the pulsar position towards the center of the gamma-ray emission region. A potential radio counterpart from the PMN survey is also discussed, showing a hint for a counterpart at the edge of the X-ray PWN trail and is taken as an upper limit in the SED. The extended X-ray PWN has an unabsorbed flux of F2-10 (keV) similar to 1.6(-0.4)(+0.2) x 10(-13) erg cm(-2)s(-1) and is detected at a significance of 6.5 sigma. The SED is well described by a one zone leptonic scenario which, with its associated caveats, predicts a very low average magnetic field for this source. Conclusions. Significant energy-dependent morphology of this source, as well as the identification of an associated X-ray PWN from XMM-Newton observations enable identification of the VHE source as an evolved PWN associated to the pulsar PSR J1301-6305. This identification is supported by the one zone leptonic model, which suggests that the energetics of the gamma-ray and X-ray radiation are such that they may have a similar origin in the pulsar nebula. However, the large discrepancy in emission region sizes and the low level of synchrotron radiation suggest a multi-population leptonic nature. The low implied magnetic field suggests that the PWN has undergone significant expansion. This would explain the low level of synchrotron radiation and the difficulty in detecting counterparts at lower energies, the reason this source was originally classified as a "dark" VHE gamma-ray source.

Constraints on the gamma-ray emission from the cluster-scale AGN outburst in the Hydra A galaxy cluster2012In: Astronomy and Astrophysics, ISSN 0004-6361, E-ISSN 1432-0746, Vol. 545, p. A103-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context. In some galaxy clusters, powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN) have blown bubbles with cluster scale extent into the ambient medium. The main pressure support of these bubbles is not known to date, but cosmic rays are a viable possibility. For such a scenario copious gamma-ray emission is expected as a tracer of cosmic rays from these systems. Aims. Hydra A, the closest galaxy cluster hosting a cluster scale AGN outburst, located at a redshift of 0.0538, is investigated for being a gamma-ray emitter with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) array and the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). Methods. Data obtained in 20.2 h of dedicated H. E. S. S. observations and 38 months of Fermi-LAT data, gathered by its usual all-sky scanning mode, have been analyzed to search for a gamma-ray signal. Results. No signal has been found in either data set. Upper limits on the gamma-ray flux are derived and are compared to models. These are the first limits on gamma-ray emission ever presented for galaxy clusters hosting cluster scale AGN outbursts. Conclusions. The non-detection of Hydra A in gamma-rays has important implications on the particle populations and physical conditions inside the bubbles in this system. For the case of bubbles mainly supported by hadronic cosmic rays, the most favorable scenario, which involves full mixing between cosmic rays and embedding medium, can be excluded. However, hadronic cosmic rays still remain a viable pressure support agent to sustain the bubbles against the thermal pressure of the ambient medium. The largest population of highly-energetic electrons, which are relevant for inverse-Compton gamma-ray production is found in the youngest inner lobes of Hydra A. The limit on the inverse-Compton gamma-ray flux excludes a magnetic field below half of the equipartition value of 16 mu G in the inner lobes.

Discovery of gamma-ray emission from the extragalactic pulsar wind nebula N 157B with HESS2012In: Astronomy and Astrophysics, ISSN 0004-6361, E-ISSN 1432-0746, Vol. 545, p. Article ID: L2-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We present the significant detection of the first extragalactic pulsar wind nebula (PWN) detected in gamma rays, N 157B, located in the large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Pulsars with high spin-down luminosity are found to power energised nebulae that emit gamma rays up to energies of several tens of TeV. N 157B is associated with PSR J0537-6910, which is the pulsar with the highest known spin-down luminosity. The High Energy Stereoscopic System telescope array observed this nebula on a yearly basis from 2004 to 2009 with a dead-time corrected exposure of 46 h. The gamma-ray spectrum between 600 GeV and 12 TeV is well-described by a pure power-law with a photon index of 2.8 +/- 0.2(stat) +/- 0.3(syst) and a normalisation at 1 TeV of (8.2 +/- 0.8(stat) +/- 2.5(syst)) x 10(-13) cm(-2) s(-1) TeV-1. A leptonic multi-wavelength model shows that an energy of about 4 x 10(49) erg is stored in electrons and positrons. The apparent efficiency, which is the ratio of the TeV gamma-ray luminosity to the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, 0.08% +/- 0.01%, is comparable to those of PWNe found in the Milky Way. The detection of a PWN at such a large distance is possible due to the pulsar's favourable spin-down luminosity and a bright infrared photon-field serving as an inverse-Compton-scattering target for accelerated leptons. By applying a calorimetric technique to these observations, the pulsar's birth period is estimated to be shorter than 10 ms.

HESS discovery of VHE gamma-rays from the quasar PKS 1510-0892013In: Astronomy and Astrophysics, ISSN 0004-6361, E-ISSN 1432-0746, Vol. 554, p. A107-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The quasar PKS 1510-089 (z = 0.361) was observed with the H.E.S.S. array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes during high states in the optical and GeV bands, to search for very high energy (VHE, defined as E >= 0.1 TeV) emission. VHE gamma-rays were detected with a statistical significance of 9.2 standard deviations in 15.8 h of H. E. S. S. data taken during March and April 2009. A VHE integral flux of I(0.15 TeV < E < 1.0TeV) = (1.0 +/- 0.2(stat) +/- 0.2(sys)) x 10(-11) cm(-2) s(-1) is measured. The best-fit power law to the VHE data has a photon index of G = 5.4 +/- 0.7(stat) +/- 0.3(sys). The GeV and optical light curves show pronounced variability during the period of H.E.S.S. observations. However, there is insufficient evidence to claim statistically significant variability in the VHE data. Because of its relatively high redshift, the VHE flux from PKS 1510-089 should suffer considerable attenuation in the intergalactic space due to the extragalactic background light (EBL). Hence, the measured gamma-ray spectrum is used to derive upper limits on the opacity due to EBL, which are found to be comparable with the previously derived limits from relatively-nearby BL Lac objects. Unlike typical VHE-detected blazars where the broadband spectrum is dominated by nonthermal radiation at all wavelengths, the quasar PKS 1510-089 has a bright thermal component in the optical to UV frequency band. Among all VHE detected blazars, PKS 1510-089 has the most luminous broad line region. The detection of VHE emission from this quasar indicates a low level of gamma - gamma absorption on the internal optical to UV photon field.

Probing the extent of the non-thermal emission from the Vela X region at TeV energies with HESS2012In: Astronomy and Astrophysics, ISSN 0004-6361, E-ISSN 1432-0746, Vol. 548, p. A38-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context. Vela X is a region of extended radio emission in the western part of the Vela constellation: one of the nearest pulsar wind nebulae, and associated with the energetic Vela pulsar (PSR B0833-45). Extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission (HESS J0835-455) was discovered using the H. E. S. S. experiment in 2004. The VHE gamma-ray emission was found to be coincident with a region of X-ray emission discovered with ROSAT above 1.5 keV (the so-called Vela X cocoon): a filamentary structure extending southwest from the pulsar to the centre of Vela X. Aims. A deeper observation of the entire Vela X nebula region, also including larger offsets from the cocoon, has been performed with H. E. S. S. This re-observation was carried out in order to probe the extent of the non-thermal emission from the Vela X region at TeV energies and to investigate its spectral properties. Methods. To increase the sensitivity to the faint gamma-ray emission from the very extended Vela X region, a multivariate analysis method combining three complementary reconstruction techniques of Cherenkov-shower images is applied for the selection of gamma-ray events. The analysis is performed with the On/Off background method, which estimates the background from separate observations pointing away from Vela X; towards regions free of gamma-ray sources but with comparable observation conditions. Results. The gamma-ray surface brightness over the large Vela X region reveals that the detection of non-thermal VHE gamma-ray emission from the PWN HESS J0835-455 is statistically significant over a region of radius 1.2 degrees around the position alpha = 08(h)35(m)00(s), delta = -45 degrees 36'00 '' (J2000). The Vela X region exhibits almost uniform gamma-ray spectra over its full extent: the differential energy spectrum can be described by a power-law function with a hard spectral index Gamma = 1.32 +/- 0.06(stat) +/- 0.12(sys) and an exponential cutoff at an energy of (14.0 +/- 1.6(stat) +/- 2.6(sys)) TeV. Compared to the previous H. E. S. S. observations of Vela X the new analysis confirms the general spatial overlap of the bulk of the VHE gamma-ray emission with the X-ray cocoon, while its extent and morphology appear more consistent with the (more extended) radio emission, contradicting the simple correspondence between VHE gamma-ray and X-ray emissions. Morphological and spectral results challenge the interpretation of the origin of gamma-ray emission in the GeV and TeV ranges in the framework of current models.

Measurement of the extragalactic background light imprint on the spectra of the brightest blazars observed with HESS2013In: Astronomy and Astrophysics, ISSN 0004-6361, E-ISSN 1432-0746, Vol. 550, p. A4-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The extragalactic background light (EBL) is the diffuse radiation with the second highest energy density in the Universe after the cosmic microwave background. The aim of this study is the measurement of the imprint of the EBL opacity to.-rays on the spectra of the brightest extragalactic sources detected with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H. E. S. S.). The originality of the method lies in the joint fit of the EBL optical depth and of the intrinsic spectra of the sources, assuming intrinsic smoothness. Analysis of a total of similar to 10(5) gamma-ray events enables the detection of an EBL signature at the 8.8 sigma level and constitutes the first measurement of the EBL optical depth using very-high energy (E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays. The EBL flux density is constrained over almost two decades of wavelengths [0.30 mu m, 17 mu m] and the peak value at 1.4 mu m is derived as lambda F-lambda = 15 +/- 2(stat) +/- 3(sys) nW m(-2) sr(-1).
