    Abstract [en]

    The aim with this thesis is to identify the risks of injury while working as marine engine staff and compare the risk of injury to employees who have similar jobs ashore. The thesis also includes identifying the types of work injuries, which leads to the most serious consequences for the employee in relation to how frequent the accident is.

    The thesis studied literature in which the Swedish Work Environment Authority's work injury reports are the base material, where a total of 198 injuries were treated and categorized. The Swedish Transport Agency’s statistics for employees at sea were compared with the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s and the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics’ statistics for employees ashore.

    The result of the thesis show that work related accidents categorized as "Carry" and "Slip/Trip/Fall" and work related diseases categorized as "Heavy lifting/Working positions" are the injuries leading to the most serious consequences in relation to how frequent the accident is. When comparing the risk of injury with similar professions ashore, marine engine staff is the second worst. The profession most similar to marine engine staff has four times less risk of injury.

    Med utgångspunkt från de nya officerarnas uppfattning om sin situation och sina erfarenheter från utbildningen samt den inledande karriären vid första Ubåtsflottiljen, syftade studien till att försöka klarlägga vilka motiv de nya officerarna hade för att söka utbildningen och att kvarstanna i yrket. Inspiration till vald metod för studiens genomförande hämtades från de empirinära forskningsmetoderna Fenomenografi och Grounded Theory där datainsamlingen oftast bedrivs genom djupintervjuer. Studiens resultat har gett värdefull insikt i vad som krävs för att rekrytera och få de nya officerarna att stanna i Ubåtsflottiljen. Studien visade på bristande informationsspridning och att värnpliktens upphörande kommer att spela stor roll när det gäller framtida nya officerares förförståelse för utbildningen och den framtida karriären. Vidare att utbildningens innehåll och längd inte är optimalt utformad för karriären på Ubåtsflottiljen. Slutligen att akademiseringen ger större tyngd åt den nye officerens CV vid en eventuell karriärväxling.

    Effekter på havsmiljön av att flytta över transporter från vägtrafik till sjöfart2019Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Antagandet av en nationell godstransportstrategi 2018 innebär att Sverige strävar efter att ”främja en överflyttning av godstransporter från väg till järnväg och sjöfart”. Ett delmål är att minska negativ miljöpåverkan från godstransporter. Men, om en överflyttning av gods från väg till sjöfart innebär ökat antal fartyg, eller ökad tillryggalagd distans med fartyg, innebär överflyttningen en ökad belastning på havsmiljön. Här föreligger därför en målkonflikt mellan transportpolitiska mål och flera miljömål. Tillståndet i havsmiljön runt Sveriges kuster uppnår idag inte god miljöstatus med avseende på exempelvis näringsämnen, miljögifter och främmande arter; för samtliga dessa belastningar bidrar sjöfarten till den negativa situationen. För att nå god miljöstatus behöver istället den totala belastningen på den marina miljön minska. Vid en eventuell överflyttning av godstransport från väg till sjöfart, är det därför angeläget att säkerställa att den ökade belastningen på den marina miljön minimeras. Ett sätt är att visa geografisk hänsyn genom att undvika sjöfart inom miljömässigt känsliga havsområden. Ett annat sätt är att ställa hårdare krav på fartygens prestanda. Miljöpåverkan från fartyg varierar framför allt mellan, men också inom, olika fartygstyper. Men att skapa nya regelverk med syfte att förbättra fartygens prestanda är en långsam process eftersom sjöfarten primärt regleras genom internationella konventioner där tillämpning av regionala eller nationella särregler undviks. Några förslag till åtgärder för att säkerställa att havsmiljön kring Sverige inte försämras till följd av överflyttning av godstransporter från väg till sjöfart är:

     

    • Tillse att det skapas högkvalitativt och jämförbart underlag för sjö- och landtransporters påverkan på havsmiljön.

     

    • Analysera och kommunicera samtliga typer av utsläpp, inte bara utsläpp av koldioxid. Utsläppsmängder och påverkan bör anges och jämföras i absoluta tal och relevanta enheter.

     

    • Minimera antalet transporter genom att öka fyllnadsgraden.

     

    • Optimera fartygens hastighet för att minimera drivmedelsförbrukningen och emissioner.

     

    • Dagens fartygstrafik i Sveriges mest känsliga och skyddade havsområden måste minska. När- och kustsjöfart bör kanaliseras bort från havs- och kustområden med höga naturvärden.

     

    • Skapa tydliga incitament så att fraktköpare enbart anlitar fartyg som har högsta miljöprestanda avseende såväl utsläpp av växthusgaser som av andra förorenande eller övergödande ämnen till luft och vatten.

     

    • Säkerställ att införandet av ett NECA (kvävekontrollområde) i Östersjön och Nordsjön innebär att fler fartyg installerar kväverening och att införandet inte leder till att fler äldre fartyg utan regelstadgad effektiv kväverening trafikerar området. • Stärk samordningen mellan myndigheter så att framtidsfrågor som rör sjöfart och dess miljöpåverkan behandlas och åtgärdas i linje med ekosystembaserad förvaltning.

     

    Relaterat till sjöfartens striktare svavelregler som träder i kraft 2020-01-01:

     

    • Förbjud utsläpp av skrubbervatten till havet då utsläppen innebär en stor risk för försämrad miljöstatus och överskridna miljökvalitetsnormer enligt vattendirektivet, med avseende på exempelvis koppar och zink.

     

    • Utred konsekvenserna av den förväntade ökade användningen av lågsvavliga hybridoljor som fartygsbränsle. Då befintlig saneringsutrustning är mindre effektiv för hybridoljor innebär detta en ökad risk vid kommande olyckor och oljeutsläpp.

    Elektromagnetiska störningar kan orsaka stora och allvarliga problem både i land och ombord på fartyg. Störningar som kommer in i kontrollerade utrymmen via kablage kan förhindras genom speciellt framtagna kabelgenomföringar. Dock gäller att dessa är installerade korrekt och syftet med detta arbete är att ta fram en principmodell för ett portabelt kontrollinstrument för kontroll av elektromagnetisk kompatibilitet (EMC).

     

    Genom att ta delar ur flertalet internationella standarder inom EMC-området togs en principmodell för kontrollinstrumentet fram. Genom simulering kunde delar av principen fastställas och sedan utfördes praktiska prover där testuppsättningen hade sitt ursprung i en vedertagen och beprövad uppsättning.

     

    Proverna visade på att principmodellen fungerar. Dock uppnådde inte modellens mätenhet samma mätnoggranhet som referensinstrumentet och dämpningar i de framtagna kretsarna skiljde sig från de framräknade värdena.

    This study examined the reconstruction of the SNCR equipment in Filbornaverket, a wasteburning grate boiler, on behalf of Öresundskraft Kraft & Värme AB. The purpose was to see ifa reduction of NOx was possible. A reduction of NOx means a reduction in acidification offorest and land. Naturvårdsverkets goal is to reduce the amount of NOx by using economiccontrol means.Filbornaverket is a boiler of about 60 MW district heating power and 18 MW electrical power.A comparative method was used in this study. The reconstruction lead to a reduced amountof NOx during the period October to November 2018 of 5,45% compared to same period2017. This means an annual saving of around 250 000 kr in reduced NOx-fees toNaturvårdsverket for Öresundskraft Kraft & Värme AB. The amount of injected ammonia wasin average 4,73% lower during 2018 compared to 2017.

    Besättning ombord ro-pax-fartyg ansvarar för lastning och lossning när fartygen ligger ihamn. Lasten består till mestadels av lastbilar som körs ombord av lastbilschaufförer. Rederier har tidigare bjudit dessa yrkeschaufförer på gratis alkohol ombord och det har förekommit berusade lastbilschaufförer under lastning och lossning vid ett flertal tillfällen. Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur fartygsbefäl och matroser ombord påro-pax-fartyg upplever att arbetsmiljön på bildäck påverkas, under lastning ochlossning, med avseende på misstänkt berusade chaufförer. Arbetet har således gått ut på att undersöka hur fartygsbefäl och matroser upplever att den personliga säkerhetenpåverkas av misstänkt berusade chaufförer samt undersöka vilka skillnader det finns ombord gällande arbetsmiljö på olika ro-pax-fartyg. De relevanta regelverken,förordningar, lagar och tidigare forskning framställdes och analyserades med en kvalitativ ansats. Utifrån analysen av teorin arbetades en intervjuguide fram somanvändes till intervjuer med fartygsbefäl och matroser som arbetar på ro-pax-fartyg. Resultatet visar att misstänkt berusade chaufförers närvaro på bildäck påverkar besättningen i olika omfattning. Generellt upplevs de berusade chaufförerna som en riskhöjande faktor som kan leda till last- och personskada under lastning och lossning.

    Abstract [en]

    Except to fulfil the current rules and guidelines, persons that are active in the role as preceptors for students in their on board training shall experience a support from their employer and their colleges. The purpose of this study was to examine if the preceptors experience that they´re getting that support and also to examine what HEIs, internship administration and students themselves can do to support the preceptors. The study was implemented with a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews. The interviews were carried out face to face with five respondents between February 24th and March 11th 2014. The results showed that there´re room for improvement in form of various kind of support for the preceptors. The majority of the respondents’ experience that they need better support in terms of education, seminars, extra time set aside for tutoring, information about the forthcoming students, their syllabuses and expected learning outcomes as well as receiving feedback from the students on completion of the internship.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to examine how the work environment and indoor air quality has changed onboard M/S Aurora af Helsingborg after the conversion from diesel electric to battery. The results have been compared to Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) hygienic exposure limits, World Health Organizations (WHO) guidelines and previous measurements from 2014 done on Aurora before the conversion to battery drive. At that time Aurora was propelled by four Wärtsilä-Vasa 6R32E diesel engines running on environmental diesel.

    During seven days in March from 9th to 16th 2019, data was collected on the vessel Aurora by different types of passive samplers: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), benzo(a)pyrene, total volatile organic substances (TVOC), benzene, temperature, relative humidity, particulate matter (PM), SO2, NO2.

    The result from the data collected showed that the indoor air quality onboard and the inside environment has improved after the conversion. All measured data were much lower than the hygienic limit values that Swedish Work Environment Authority has set. The values of the data were also lower than recommendations except from TVOC in purifier room. The duties on board Aurora has changed for the better since the conversion, including less management of oil products.

    Abstract [en]

    Fuel is one of the biggest costs in shipping today, and new technologies are being developed to save fuel. But there is potential to make fuel today aboard cruise ships. One of the biggest expenses in making biogas on land is the heating of the substrate, this cost can be eliminated on ships by using waste heat from engines and steam systems. This report explores the possibility of producing biogas by using toilet and food waste that is created daily aboard cruise ships. What components are needed, calculations of the space they would take and how much gas could be produced. The report was conducted by examining how biogas is produced on land, what are the most common technologies used today? And if they are technically possible aboard a cruise ship? To calculate gas potential, tank and reactor volume. Data has been collected from four cruise ships. The results show that it is possible to create biogas. But that the amount of gas could not justify the cost of building a biogas plant aboard cruise ships.

    Abstract [en]

    In order to improve the company's energy efficiency, a international law in 2014 was introduced to carry out energy surveys on companies with more than 250 employees, with annual income of more than 50 million euros, or over 43 million in total assets. Nymölla Bruk are included in this law and must therefore carry out energy mapping every four years and report it to the Swedish energy department. This law is the purpose for this degree project based to carrying out an energy survey on paper machine 2 in Nymölla Bruk.

    In the desiccator, 8.89 kg/s of water is evacuated from the paper with a gram weight of 120g/m2 and 10.45 kg/s with a gram weight of 80g/m2. The likely reason that it can evaporate more water from the paper in the lower grammage is that the paper is driven through the machine at a higher rate. The paper machine can produce 120g/m2 paper at a speed of 9.67 m/s and 80g/m2 paper at a speed of 12.22 m/s. The evaporating difference between gram weights can also be seen in the aftermath. The mass flow for point 20 which is at the exhaust air fan as shown in Figure 9 on page 25 of the report could not be reported due to the absence of a meter in place, and calculations for producing the mass flow did not work when the fan diagram from the fan manufacturers probably did not match the fan on which the measurements were made.

    In order to make an complete energy examination on this machine in regard of steam, condensate and process ventilation, it is necessary that the mass flow for point 20 can be known. The balance of the leakage into the dryer can not be determined without mass flow variable, making the energy consumption required to heat the air with steam impossible to calculate. Therefore, a further study should be done to carry out for making an complete energy examination.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of the project was to compile knowledge and experience from the operationof SCR-installations on vessels in order to determine the main causes behind theproblems that arise in the catalyst systems within North- and Baltic Sea shipping. Thestudy was performed as a qualitative interview method. In order to get a good coverage,the study was directed against both companies and ships with experience of SCR andmanufacturers of systems. The interviews were conducted by telephone, and thenanalyzed against the objective. The result showed that a large number of plants haveundergone modifications since problems has occurred. A number of common problemswere identified. The study identified some components that are particularly critical todesign and dimension, such as equipment for urea injection and solenoid valves for sootblowing. It was also found that the exhaust temperature as well as fuel and urea qualitywere important factors in achieving good performance and lifetime. Increasedcompetence is required from both existing and future engine personnel so thatmaintenance can be done the right way and at the right time. To meet future demands ofSCR combined with scrubber technique further technical development is required.

    This report describes a literature study that examines the wireless local area network (WLAN) aboard the vessels bridge. Society is constantly evolving and the usage of electronic devices with access to the Internet is constantly increasing. The aim of the work was to investigate the wireless connection´s advantages, disadvantages, as well as its positive and negative effects. A literature review was performed and together with the analysis based on a mind map. The results suggests that more negative effects than positive comes with being connected on the vessel´s bridge. The conclusions that can be drawn are that increased availability leads to increased usage. This use affects the individual's focus and health negatively. It can also affect sleep negatively where both quantity and quality deteriorates. The positive aspects WLAN can contribute to are increased well-being of the individual as well as facilitate the work by linking devices together. It is important to optimize the workplace so that health risks are minimized. WLAN generally has a negative effect on the bridge watch. The possibilities that come with WLAN are few in relation to the risks.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to find a method for Xylem inc, in Emmaboda, to measure the wear of the furnace lining in their melting furnaces. The survey was conducted using a mapping of how foundries in Sweden measure the lining on their melting furnaces, further on which products are available on the market today to find the method best suited for Xylem inc.

    Mainly contact was made via telephone and mail with foundries and various product manufacturers as well as a visit to Federal mogul, which has a system in operation. Information from a functioning system is of interest to the investigation as a comparison is possible for Xylem inc. After the data was collected, the results for Xylem inc were presented. Then Xylem selected two systems for which they wanted a profitability calculation. The profitability calculation showed that the time it would take to earn the investment was high.

    The conclusion was that the expensive system, SAVEWAY, is most reliable. It is a system that is already available on the market, and it also contributes to increased security regarding plant and personnel. The cheap option, Cobalt 3D Imager, is a system that could work well over time, provided you further develop pieces regarding assembly, approach and automation.

The persecution continued until the mid of the 20th century, and in the early 1960s the European breeding population of the continental subspecies sinensis had declined to 4,000 breeding pairs (bp) only, of which Germany and Poland hosted more than the half. During the following two decades, the population development apparently has also been affected by the harmful effects of DDT and PCB.

    As a result of protection measures, and seemingly also due to the ban of DDT and PCB, breeding pair numbers started to increase during the second half of the 1970s. During the 1980s, the Cormorant started to expand its range towards the northern and eastern parts of the Baltic. Currently, the species is present in the whole Baltic Sea area, including the northern parts of the Gulf of Bothnia.

    Baltic-wide surveys in 2006, 2009 and 2012 showed that the Baltic population had stabilized at a level of 155,000 – 170,000 bp during that period. However, after 2012 breeding pair numbers have still increased in the eastern and northern Baltic. Hence, the current population is estimated at 190,000-210,000 bp.

    The highest population densities are found around the highly eutrophic estuaries of the southern Baltic (Odra-, Vistula-, and Curonian lagoon).

    Since the start of industrialization humans have affected the climate balance by burning fossil fuels. Exhaust gas emissions caused by the international shipping cannot be attributed to any particular nation because of its global and complex business. The International Maritime Organisation has therefore undertaken the responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of shipping. The introduction of new environmental goals has resulted in stricter global and national regulations that force the shipping industry to make significant adjustments in a short period of time. As a solution to meet future requirements for exhaust gas emissions several alternative fuels have been discussed. Operating vessels on methanol results in low exhaust gas emissions and is therefore considered to have the potential to become a sustainable fuel for the shipping industry. The aim of this study was to investigate what shipping companies, machine manufacturers and classification societies considers about methanol as an alternative fuel. Initially, a literature study was implemented which formed the basis of the interview questions. The result shows that methanol is considered to have great potential compared with other alternative fuels. Since methanol can be produced from excess energy and transportation can be done with existing infrastructure methanol is considered both environmentally friendly and economically viable. Nevertheless, the highly fluctuating methanol price can causes shipping companies to hesitate in the financing of developments that is necessary for the realization of methanol operation on board vessels.

    Abstract [en]

    The crew's working as a mariner means many different tasks and challenges but few think about the effects of the indoor environment on the human health. Now when the new SECA regulations are in force vessels has been forced to convert to new low- sulphur fuel and this can lead to a positive change in the vessels indoor environment. Exposure and levels of air pollutants in indoor environment have been studied onboard the icebreaker Oden. Investigations were performed once during the vessel’s operation on heavy fuel oil (HFO) and once with marine diesel (MD) as fuel. Concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including benzene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were measured with personal and stationary diffusive samplers. The crew's perception of air quality was studied by a questionnaire survey with regard to the general acceptability of air quality, odor, and air characteristics such as fresh, clean, dry or moldy, and thermal comfort.

    The general acceptance of the air quality was very high; 0.8 and 0.9 in the workplaces and in cabins, respectively, on a scale from -1 to 1. The decrease in personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide and benzene was statistically significant. Difference between the concentrations of volatile organic compounds was not statistically significant. The indoor air quality has improved in several aspects after the fuel conversion. The results from the questionnaires show that the crew was overall satisfied with their indoor environment. The results of the measurements show a decrease of substances after the conversion.

    This paper explores the safety culture aboard vessels trading in the Baltic Sea. The common denominator for vessels trading in the Baltic Sea is frequent port visits, coastal voyages, voyages in dense trafficked areas and small crews. In a safety culture values, attitudes, competence and behavioral patterns are four important factors. The maritime safety management system aims towards a proactive and evolutionally safety culture. This study has an ethnographic perspective and totally eleven vessels participated in the study. Collected data has been analysed through a model and the study reveals that there is a need to discuss and change the safety culture, in large as on the single vessel in shipping today. As well as a need for further studies of how the safety culture can be improved and a need for education aimed towards system thinking, organizational theory and safety culture. The study was funded by the Swedish Mercantile Marine Foundation.

    This report is produced to document the existing installation regarding the ballast, bilge and fire system aboard the vessel M/S Calmare Nyckel. According to the specifications of the assignment a proposal regarding improvements will also be presented. The suggestions are mainly based on data from a supplier of valve components and the demands put up by the classification society. The improvements are considered with reduced risk and increased safety in mind. The main differences in the new proposals are the separation of the bilge system from the other two systems, that the most vital functions can be remote-controlled by pneumatics and that all components are marked according to industry standard.

    This diploma thesis was mainly focused to investigate the heating problems of Björkö Friskola. The assignment had as main objective to find a solution on the cool indoor climate in the school buildings. It was also included to find solutions on problems that have affected the plant since construction. Exhaust gas measurement was performed on the boilers and from those values it could be established that one boiler had extremely low effect and bad combustion. A combustion optimization was performed that resulted in less boiler maintenance and reduced environmental impact. Björkö Friskola faced a decision to build a new school canteen and has considered whether it was possible to connect this building to the district heating. Thereby calculations were made in order to decide whether this could be possible theoretically. The buildings on the area during average annual temperatures consume approximately 27 kW and during a temperature of -200C, approximately 82 kW. Compared this to the total installed boiler output that was 337 kW it could be noted that the facility in its current version could facilitate another connection.

    Abstract [en]

    All ships regulated by SOLAS were required to have ECDIS onboard by 1st of July 2018, these new requirements pose a challenge in competence for the maritime industry. Today approximately 80% of accidents at sea are caused by the human factor. This qualitative study focuses on the operators experiences and the user-friendliness of ECDIS on the bridge. The results of the study indicates that knowledge gaps regarding ECDIS exists varying between officers and that improvement of the education can be done as well as revising the requirements for certification of ECDIS. The study is based on the graduating class of master mariners of 2019 in Kalmar and active officers’ perspective and opinions on user-friendliness, education, competency and safety regarding ECDIS. The study also entails maritime accidents and highlights the dangers of lack of knowledge and how the faulty use of ECDIS can lead to unnecessary accidents.

    The study is conducted for Freezing Food Småland Öland AB. The purpose of the study was to propose measures to decrease the facility’s energy demand and to calculate the payback time for these suggestions. By means of using simulation software along with data from practical measurements different configurations in the facility were tested.

    The study resulted in suggestions consisting of an increase of the temperature in the freezing room and the temperature in LTB1.Those suggestions increases the facilities COP and decreases the energy consumption. Proposals to curb the ice growth are the insulation of components such as pipes and valves. Insulation results in a small decrease in energy demand but greatly increases the accessibility and also decreases the risk of corrosion. Through load tests conducted on the compressors it showed that the compressors were not driven in the optimal load range, suggestions were made for operation in a more favourable load range. Thus increasing the efficiency and cutting the maintenance costs. From the results it is shown that the facility is well built and dimensioned against thermal transmission. Though it turned out that the floor heating accounts for a disproportionate amount of the thermal transmission.

In this study the authors have used both observation and interview methodology to obtain a perspective of how life on board each vessel types was experienced. Results which affect a positive experience of the life on board include: the importance of common activities and the master's attitude.

    A future alternative propulsion method of ships could be a steam jet that is expanded via an ejector. The purpose of the study was to conduct an experiment on two different types of outlet nozzles on the diffuser of the ejector. This was carried out to find which design that is suitable for this propulsion method and what propulsion force that was possible to achieve. The result of the study was then thought to be used as a basis for further studies of steam jet propulsion through an ejector, to possibly increase the energy efficiency in comparison with today's propulsion methods. The result shows that a circular jet provides maximum propulsion force despite a lower inlet pressure and a water temperature at 70 °C in comparison with a flat jet at higher inlet pressures and equal temperature. The experiment gave no measurable propulsion force when expanding wet steam at a pressure of 3 MPa and a temperature at 150 °C.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper offers an analytical discussion on the terminology and timeframes related to the future of shipping. The discussion is based on issues that have surfaced within the Swedish research project Autonomy and responsibility. The paper argues that the concept 'autonomous ships' has become an indicator of that seafarers soon will become obsolete - which may have negative consequences for the supply of maritime competence in coming years - and that the proper definition of the term 'autonomous' describes something that will never apply to a ship. Ships can be given the possibility, but hardly the full right or condition of self-government. It is argued that 'smart ships', or perhaps 'intelligent ships', are more appropriate, since these terms describe the current and future state of technology without predicting how humans will prefer to use it. The estimated timeframes for implementation of unmanned ships suggest no threat to the seafaring occupation for coming generation. The content of the occupation will of course change due to the phase of implementation of degree of digitalization, but there will always be a need for maritime knowledge and understanding.

    This study takes its departure in the difficulties to recruit and retain qualified senior seafarers in the Swedish shipping sector. The study focus is on seafarers’ motivation at work for the specific shipping company (organizational commitment), and seafarers’ motivation towards their occupation (occupational commitment), in times of flagging out. It was hypothesized that the youngest seafarers and the oldest may be most sensitive to foreign registration of ships. Statistical analyses were employed, using a survey material of 1,309 Swedish seafarers randomly collected in 2010 from a national register of seafarers. The results of the analyses show that flagging-out imposes a significant decline in organizational commitment for all seafarers. This decline is related to the perception of the social composition of crew. In addition, the oldest seafarers (age 55+) demonstrate diminished occupational commitment under a foreign flag. This decline is related to the degree of satisfaction with the social security structure. Occupational commitment among the youngest seafarers (age 19-30) is not affected by the nationality of flag. However, this type of commitment is decreasing by the time served on the same ship. This effect is partly related to a decline in satisfaction with the work content. In the concluding discussion, the findings are discussed in more details and recommendations are put forward.

The results show that the main negative effects on seafarers' commitment at work primarily have to do with invested - or wasted - time, and flag state worries.     The present study focuses on the pattern of Swedish seafarers’ occupational commitment relative to gender and family situation. Statistical analyses are employed, using a survey material of Swedish seafarers randomly collected from a national register in 2010. It was hypothesized that the effect from having children at home should be negative on commitment to seafaring occupation. However, the effect was found to be strongly positive and statistically significant for women and close to significant for men. Another important family effect was, as expected, the positive effect of having a relative working, or having worked, at sea. This effect was, however, only significant for male seafarers in the age group below the early 40’s. When controlling for possible mediating effects due to gender distribution in the onboard departments, it became clear that working in the catering department comes with a strong negative effect on commitment to the seafaring occupation, but only so for women. This effect did not, however, alter much of the already observed gender patterns. In the concluding discussion, the findings are discussed in more details and recommendations put forward.

    Ongoing research has indicated important effects on seafarers’ occupational commitment due to gender and family situation. In this study, these findings have been elaborated further by controlling for the effect of perceived work content. Statistical analyses were employed, using a survey material of Swedish seafarers collected from a national register in 2010. The results showed that the effect on occupational commitment of having children at home is strongly positive and statistically significant for women. However, the significance was dependent on the level of satisfaction with the job content. It was suggested that the seafaring occupation could be viewed as a cooping strategy, although only appropriate if the job content is agreeable. Another important family effect was, as expected, the positive effect of having a relative working, or having worked, at sea. This effect was, however, only significant for male seafarers in the age group below the early 40’s. It was concluded that this effect is mainly emotionally driven and not particularly influenced by the actual job content. The results further showed that working in the catering department comes with a strong negative effect on commitment to the seafaring occupation for women. This effect, however, lost its significance after control for job content. It was concluded that the effect of satisfaction with job content on occupational commitment is generally important, with the exception of women, without children, working in the catering department.

    Det här projektet undersöker arbetsmiljön för intendenturpersonalen på svenska passagerarfar-tyg. Bakgrunden till projektet ligger i upptäckten att intendenturpersonal ombord passagerar-fartyg år 2010 uppvisade en betydligt högre upplevelse av utmattning, jämfört med andra per-sonalgrupper. Utmattningsupplevelsen indikerades med ett utmattningsindex bestående av ett flertal upplevelseaspekter rörande trötthet och stress i arbetet. Passagerarfartygens intendentur-personal har även rapporterat högre ohälsotal än andra personalkategorier i svensk sjöfart.Projektet innefattar en jämförelse av svenskregistrerad sjöpersonals upplevelser av utmattning fördelat på ombordfunktioner och fartygstyp vid mellan 2010 och 2015, samt förhållandet mel-lan arbetstillfredsställelse, motivation och utmattningsupplevelse inom intendenturen år 2015. I projektet analyseras även Försäkringskassans sjukskrivningsstatistik för åren 2011–2014 med avseende på sjuktalen för långa sjukskrivningar över 60 dagar och diagnosfördelning för inten-denturpersonalen, samt om det möjligt att göra en analytisk koppling till upplevelsen av utmatt-ning. Genom intervjuer och observationer med chefer och medarbetare ombord och iland un-dersöks vilka fysiska, organisatoriska och sociala faktorer som upplevs vara av betydelse för arbetsmiljön.Det övergripande målet är att identifiera friskfaktorer för att minska risken för utmattning och ohälsa som kan leda till långa sjukskrivningar och lämna välgrundade rekommendationer för branschen.Resultaten visar att passagerarfartygens besättning rapporterar högst utmattningsupplevelse både 2010 och 2015. Intendenturpersonalen är också klart överrepresenterade i sjukskrivnings-statistiken och sjuktalen, vilket kan kopplas till upplevelsen av utmattning.Enkätundersökningen 2015 visar att intendenturpersonalen rapporterar mest negativa upplevel-ser av arbetssituation, kamratskap och ledarskap jämfört med andra avdelningar. Det är dock en generellt motiverad yrkesgrupp med hög arbetstillfredsställelse. Friskfaktorer som visat sig lindra utmattningsupplevelsen (bemanning, vila, ledarskap, relationer till andra avdelningar) stärker personalens motivation att arbeta till sjössÖkad delaktighet hos intendenturpersonalen i arbetsmiljöarbete och arbetsplatsens utformning kan minska de negativa och höja de hälsofrämjande effekterna av förändringsarbete ombord. Den sociala arbetsmiljön är en viktig del av arbetet till sjöss och omfattar även den lediga tid som tillbringas ombord. Arbetsmiljöarbete bör därför omfatta åtgärder som bryter ner gränser mellan avdelningar, skapar sammanhållning och en gemensam identitet för intendenturen och besättningen i stort.

The method used is a qualitative research containing interviews with women in such workplaces. A total of six interviews were carried out with three respondents onboard ships and three respondents ashore. The result shows that it in some way affects that they work on a male dominated/gender bias workplace and there are mostly similarities and minor differences based on if the respondent is working onboard a ship or in shore.

    Lotsar måste anlitas av fartyg för att assistera vid hamnanlöp eller riskfyllda passager. Sjöfartsverket som arbetsgivare åt lotsarna ser problematik med rekrytering av nya lotsar som i kombination med pensionsavgångar skapar en brist av behöriga lotsar. Antagningskraven till den lotstjänst som finns idag är bland annat att sjöbefälet ska sjökaptensbehörighet. En smalare bas tillgängliga svenska sjöbefäl idag gör att Sjöfartsverket måste undersöka alternativa utbildningsmöjligheter till framtidens lotsar, för att säkerställa en tillräcklig bemanning på samtliga lotsstationer. Undersökningens syfte var att undersöka hur  framtida lotsutbildning och lotsrekrytering kan se ut för att möta framtidens behov av lotsar. Från semistrukturerade intervjuer med Sjöfartsverket, lotsar, sjökaptener och rederirepresentanten Svensk sjöfart framkom att flera alternativ är i konstruktionsfas men i stort bara preliminära. Bland alternativen finns en lotsutbildning på högskolenivå som påbyggnadsutbildning efter sjökaptensexamen. Centrala frågor i rekryteringsprocessen berör erfarenhet och utbildningens uppbyggnad. Sjöfartsverket anser att en förändring måste genomföras, men är osäkra på vilken lösning som är framtidssäker.

    The purpose of this study is to examine sea captain student’s attitude towards working together with foreign officers. Those who study to become a sea officer in Sweden have to count on that they will work together with officers and crew that come from other nations than Sweden. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews has been used to examine the respondent’s attitudes. This method has been used to give the respondents the possibility to explain, with their own words about their experiences witch have formed their attitudes. The respondents in this study is six sea captain students from different grades and with different experiences. The study is divided in to three themes; communication & language, leadership and the social life onboard. The results show that none of the respondents have a negative attitude towards working with foreign officers. The majority was neutral and the rest were positive or very positive towards working with foreign officers, preferably with a completely mixed crew. Overall it have worked well according to the respondents’ perception. It has generally been a straight and clear leadership. The communication has also been straight and clear from the officers’ side, this is something the respondents have agreed is something positive.

    I juni 2017 upphörde den skyldighet för redare som under en del tidigare år funnits, att anställa sjöbefälsstudenter på svenskflaggade fartyg under den fartygsförlagda utbildningen. Detta kan nu kan leda till att de inte får någon månadsersättning för tiden ombord under sina praktikperioder. Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka hur sjökaptensstudenter upplever att de nya villkoren har förändrat den fartygsförlagda utbildningen och hur villkoren, såväl som andra faktorer, har påverkat sjökaptensstudenters motivation under den fartygsförlagda utbildningen. En kvalitativ metod i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer har använts. Resultatet visar att den fartygsförlagda utbildningen har förändrats både positivt och negativt av de nya villkoren, dock verkar de negativa aspekterna väga något tyngre. Studien åskådliggör även att motivationen hos samtliga respondenter påverkades negativt någon vecka innan påmönstring och att den sedan successivt ökade igen efter några veckor ombord tack vare faktorer som bra besättningar, duktiga handledare, lärorika uppgifter och ansvar. Däremot visar resultatet även att motivationen återigen sänktes då okvalificerade arbeten utfördes under obetalda praktikperioder.

    The greatest loss of energy in a pipe system has many times been proven to be frictional loss. This study with that in mind, will try to answer if this type of loss can be prevented using a superhydrophobic coating on the inside of a pipe.

     

    This study uses two small-scale systems, one circulation system and one simplified system for freeflow testing. On both systems, measuring equipment is fixated close to the 1,5m test-pipe. Therefore, calculated and measured data is not distorted by the surrounding components. Measuring equipment is used to check volumetric flow, velocity, temperatures and differential-pressure. This data is later used to compare the frictional losses before and after applying the superhydrophobic coating.

     

    The results, after completed tests are the opposite of the expected results. The coating that has been used for this study causes a negative effect and, in turn results in a substantial increase of frictional loss.

    The company Xylem Flygt in Emmaboda produces submersible pumps of various sizes and types used worldwide. Before the pumps are delivered to the customer they are tested in Xylem's own testing facilities. The plant Q2 concerned in the report consists of a basin with associated piping, valves, connection equipment and measurement equipment. This reports main objective is to investigate and make proposals for improvement regarding test facility maintenance planning. Other questions examined areIf the plants looks representable in quality and appearance to the visiting customers, the time intervals between preventive maintenance, environmental responsibility regarding the change of water in the basin, the ability to implement the results in other facilities as well as recommendations on follow-up’s. The report resulted in checklists for the maintenance department and the operators of the facility, documentation of components and improvement proposals.

    Kalmar Energis kraftvärmeverk har sedan det togs i drift 2009 blandat bottenaskan med askan ifrån konvektionsstråken. Eftersom Kalmar Energi söker nya användningsområden för askorna var för sig har en separering av dessa blivit aktuell att undersöka.

    Syftet med rapporten var att ta fram en teknisk lösning åt Kalmar Energi för att transportera aska från konvektionsstråk 2 och 3 till flygasksilon på Moskogen kraftvärmeverk.

    Rapporten har skrivits i nära samarbete med Moskogens driftpersonal samt med tillgång till deras arkiv och DCS. Rapporten har gjorts som en kvalitativ undersökning med intervjuer och en litteraturstudie.

    Den tekniska lösningen resulterade i att aska från konvektionsstråk 2 och 3 transporteras via cellmatare, skruvar och fallrör till en ny gemensam stoftsändare. Stoftsändaren kommer sedan pneumatiskt transportera askan via en ny transportledning direkt till flygasksilon.

    The purpose of this study is to evaluate an updated beta version of Ergo-Index, adigital tool for ergonomic risk assessments. The evaluation was performed with 15expert users who assessed type, distance, height and exposure time of certain worktasks, as well as the usability of the tool. In conclusion, the users find the presentstate of the Ergo-Index suitable as a first screening method. Assessments of liftingwork have the greatest inter-rater reliability. Further development of the digitalizedversion of the tool is needed to improve accuracy assessing input regardingpushing and pulling work tasks, and to increase usability.

    AIM: To describe health status and psychological distress among in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) survivors in relation to gender.

    METHODS: This national register study consists of data from follow-up registration of IHCA survivors 3-6 months post cardiac arrest (CA) in Sweden. A questionnaire was sent to the survivors, including measurements of health status (EQ-5D-5L) and psychological distress (HADS).

    RESULTS: Between 2013 and 2015, 594 IHCA survivors were included in the study. The median values for EQ-5D-5L index and EQ VAS among survivors were 0.78 (q1-q3=0.67-0.86) and 70 (q1-q3=50-80) respectively. The values were significantly lower (p<0.001) in women compared to men. In addition, women reported more problems than men in all dimensions of EQ-5D-5L, except self-care. A majority of the respondents reported no problems with anxiety (85.4%) and/or symptoms of depression (87.0%). Women reported significantly more problems with anxiety (p<0.001) and symptoms of depression (p<0.001) compared to men. Gender was significantly associated with poorer health status and more psychological distress. No interaction effects for gender and age were found.

    CONCLUSIONS: Although the majority of survivors reported acceptable health status and no psychological distress, a substantial proportion reported severe problems. Women reported worse health status and more psychological distress compared to men. Therefore, a higher proportion of women may be in need of support. Health care professionals should make efforts to identify health problems among survivors and offer individualised support when needed.

    Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated differences in characteristics and outcome between men and women in cardiac arrest (CA) populations. However, most studies have focused only on survival outcome. Knowledge about patient reported health and psychological distress among CA survivors is sparse, in particular among those suffering in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). The aim was to describe health status and psychological distress among IHCA survivors in relation to sex. Methods: This national register study presents follow-up data of IHCA survivors from 64% of the eligible hospitals in Sweden. A questionnaire was sent to the survivors, 3-6 months post CA, including measures of health status (EQ-5D) and psychological distress (HADS). Results: Between 2013 and 2015, 594 IHCA survivors were included. Women reported more problems in all dimensions of EQ-5D, except for Self-care. They also had worse health status (EQ-index) (0.75 vs 0.79, p<0.001). The median value for EQ-VAS was 70 (q1-q3=50-80), significantly lower for women compared to men (65 vs 75, p<0.001).     Background: Recent decades have shown major improvements in survival rates after cardiac arrest. However, few interventions have been tested in order to improve the care for survivors and their family members. In many countries, including Sweden, national guidelines for post cardiac arrest care and follow-up programs are not available and current practice has not previously been investigated. The aim of this survey was therefore to describe current post cardiac arrest care and follow-up in Sweden.

    Methods: An internet based questionnaire was sent to the resuscitation coordinators at all Swedish emergency hospitals (n = 74) and 59 answers were received. Quantitative data were analysed with descriptive statistics and free text responses were analysed using manifest content analysis.

    Results: Almost half of the hospitals in Sweden (n = 27, 46 %) have local guidelines for post cardiac arrest care and follow-up. However, 39 % of them reported that these guidelines were not always applied. The most common routine is a follow-up visit at a cardiac reception unit. If the need for neurological or psychological support are discovered the routines are not explicit. In addition, family members are not always included in the follow-up.

    Conclusions: Although efforts are already made to improve post cardiac arrest care and follow-up, many hospitals need to focus more on this part of cardiac arrest treatment. In addition, evidence-based national guidelines will have to be developed and implemented in order to achieve a more uniform care and follow-up for survivors and their family members. This national survey highlights this need, and might be helpful in the implementation of such guidelines.

    Objectives: To describe in-hospital cardiac arrest (CA) events with regard to sex and to investigate if sex is associated with survival. Background: Previous studies exploring differences between sexes are incongruent with regard to clinical outcomes. In order to provide equality and improve care, further investigations into these aspects are warranted. Methods: This registry study included 286 CAs. To investigate if sex was associated with survival, logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: The proportion of CA with a resuscitation attempt compared to CA without resuscitation was higher among men. There were no associations between sex and survival when controlling for previously known predictors and interaction effects. Conclusions: Sex does not appear to be a predictor for survival among patients suffering CA where resuscitation is attempted. The difference regarding proportion of resuscitation attempts requires more attention. It is important to consider possible interaction effects when studying the sex perspective.
