    Abstract [en]

    The purpose with the work is to examine how teachers use the children book Fia och djuren (Kruusval 2007) to make mathematics visible for 5-6 year old children in preschool. We observed the teachers in a reading aloud session and then we interviewed them to get a deeper picture of how they were thinking around the subject of reading aloud and mathematics. The result of the examination shows that the teachers’ knowledge and experiences around the subject of mathematics have a crucial meaning for which form of mathematics that is visible in the reading aloud session. The result also shows that it is of great importance that the teachers’ challenges, encourage, support and discuss with the children about the mathematics which is both visible and hidden in the book.

    De allra flesta av oss kommer ständigt i kontakt med olika dataflöden vilket har blivit en helt naturlig del av vårt nutida informationssamhälle. Dagens företag agerar i en ständigt föränderlig omvärld, och hantering av data och information har blivit en allt viktigare konkurrensfaktor. Detta i takt med att den totala datamängden i den digitala världen har ökat kraftigt de senaste åren. En benämning för gigantiska datamängder är Big Data, som har blivit ett populärt begrepp inom IT-branschen. Big Data kommer med helt nya analysmöjligheter, men det har visat sig att många företag är oroliga för hur de ska hantera och ta tillvara på de växande datamängderna. Syftet med denna studie har varit att ge ett kunskapsbidrag till det relativt outforskade Big Data området, detta utifrån en induktiv ansats med utgångspunkten ur intervjuer. Den problematik som kommit med Big Data beskrivs oftast ur tre perspektiv; där data förekommer i stora volymer, med varierande data-typer och källor, samt att data genereras med olika hastighet. Det framgick av studiens resultat att Big Data som begrepp berör många olika områden och det kan variera väldigt mycket mellan företag inom olika branscher vad gäller betydelse, förmåga, ambition och omfattning. De traditionella teknologierna för datalagring och utvinning är inte tillräckliga för att hantera data som benämns som Big Data. I samband med att ny teknologi tagits fram och äldre lösningar uppgraderats, har detta dock lett till att det nu går att se informationshantering och analysarbete i helt nya perspektiv.

    Eftersom Big Data huvudsakligen har samma syfte som området Business Intelligence, kan dessa lösningar lämpligen integreras. En mycket stor utmaning med Big Data är att det inte är möjligt att exakt veta vad som kommer att uppnås med datainsamling och analys. Efter att data har samlats in bör ett business case tas fram med riktlinjer för vad som ska uppnås. Det finns en stor potential i denna uppgående marknad som, trots allt, är relativt omogen. Informationshantering kommer att bli allt viktigare framöver och för företagen handlar det om att hänga med i snabba utvecklingen och skaffa sig en bra förståelse för nya trender i IT-världen.

    Abstract [en]

    Adaptive antenna arrays have a great importance in reduction of the effect of interference and increase the capacity for the mobile satellite communication. Interference and multipath fading remain a main problem for reception of signals. These two problems obviously affect the overall capacity.  Adaptive antenna arrays in the handheld mobile apparatus will be the solution for the above two problems.

     

    Satellite mobile communication is one of the growing fields in the communication area where terrestrial infrastructures are unable or ineffective to supply. Maritime, aeronautical and land mobile are some of the applications. During natural disasters where ground services are stopped, mobile satellite communications has great importance. Following the hurricane season, the Asian Tsunami and the devastating Haiti earthquake, mobile satellite communications had played a great role to fill the communication gaps.  The satellites can be tracked automatically by adaptive antenna array when it moves in its orbital plane.

     

    In this thesis the methods that how the adaptive antenna array combats interferers is presented and simulated using MATLAB software. The performance of the adaptive antenna array is evaluated by simulating the directivity pattern of the antenna and Mean Square Error (MSE) graph for different scenario like Signal to Interference Noise ratio (SINR), number of iterations, antenna array elements and convergence factor (μ), assuming the signals are coming from different Direction of Arrival (DOA).

    Abstract [en]

    Wind power industry has become the world’s fastest growing renewable energy source. A firm’s information requirements can only be understood by examining their Information System (IS) through Organizational, People, Technical and Strategic perspective.  Current study focuses on the value of Information System implementation for Swedish Wind Power Industry (SWPI) that has reached to more than one billion dollars in recent decade. A well-known integrated IS i.e. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) used by Swedish Wind Power Industry (SWPI) for decision making activities is not without its challenges, that consumes a significant portion of their capital and resources for implementation. Exploratory and explanatory research conducted for triangulation, through quantitative and qualitative methods, with empirical data of survey, multiple case studies, interviews and extensive literature review, to highlight the problems and solutions for implementing ERP in SWPI. Several, IS are highlighted with their functionalities and critical success and failure factors. A Model of Knowledge Sharing in ERP Implementation between system users, top management and project team is proposed for critical factors of ERP implementation.

    Abstract [en]

    Since the textbook has a prominent role in Swedish mathematics education it is of importance that textbooks has a focus on everyday life application that matches the requirements of the syllabuses and provide examples of practical usage of mathematics. The purpose of this qualitative case study of four randomly chosen textbooks in mathematics for the ninth grade, published during the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, from which a stratified random sample of word problems has been drawn, is to study the prevalence of word problems related to everyday life as well as to see how much of the everyday life related instructions in the syllabuses these textbooks implement. The result shows that the proportion of exercises that is made up from word problems has increased steadily from the 1960s to the 1990s in the textbooks that were analysed and at the same time has the proportion of exercises related to everyday life among the word problems decreased. The overarching impression regarding instructions related to everyday life in the syllabuses is that rather few of them have been implemented via word problems.

    Ämnet neurodidaktik bygger på hjärnforskning och etablerade teorier inom det pedagogiska området. Syftet med vår studie är att dra slutsatser av de rön vi finner inom hjärnforskningen som studerar hur hjärnan fungerar i inlärningssammanhang. Vi har lyft fram ett antal förutsättningar för lärande i vår studie som alla får stöd i aktuell hjärnforskning. Dessa förutsättningar har vi kopplat samman med hur hjärnan utvecklas ur ett matematiskt perspektiv. Litteratursökningen har ägt rum i faktaböcker och databaser och för att få vägledning har vi kontaktat experter inom området. De slutsatser vi drar av våra sammanställda texter visar att kunskaper inom neurologin kan vägleda pedagoger i undervisningen. Vår slutsats är att neurodidaktik bidrar med viktig kunskap om hjärnan som kan lämna värdefulla tillskott för pedagoger i undervisningssammanhang i ämnet matematik och även i övriga ämnen.

    This project aims to optimize Ericsson's converter system by adjusting the bus voltage.For this purpose the converter system is modelled in Simulink with measurement datafrom the physical converters. To understand from where the losses originate I have asection with theoretical background for the losses in a buck converter. Anoptimization algorithm is developed to control the bus voltage in the simulations, andhopefully this algorithm will function as a template when it is implemented inhardware.

    Målet med projektet var att undersöka hur skeletal animationer utförs. Ett mål till var att det skulle vara förbestämda animationer. För att kunna ha förberäknade animationer användes autodesk fbx-filer. Skinningen har använt dubbel kvaternioner istället för matriser.Rapporten visar att skeletal animation med dubbel kvaternion skinning teknik kan utföras genom att använda fbx-filer med data som först exporterats till json-format.

    Syftet med undersökningen är att få kunskap om vilken betydelse

    kompetensutveckling i matematik har för pedagoger i förskolan och hur

    pedagogerna använder sig av de nya kunskaperna i verksamheten.

    Vi använde oss av semistrukturerade intervjuer för att få svar på våra

    frågeställningar. De medverkande var två barnskötare och två

    förskollärare, de arbetar i förskolan med barn i åldern 1-5 år.

    Resultatet visar att kompetensutveckling har betydelse för att synliggöra

    matematiken för pedagogerna i förskolan. De förstår nu att matematiken

    finns överallt i vardagen. Mest framträdande i vår undersökning är att

    pedagogernas uppfattning har förändrats med en medvetenhet om

    matematik efter kompetensutvecklingen.

    När en ny webbapplikation skall lanseras och driftsättas är det svårt att i förhand veta vilken datatrafik och belastning som tjänsten behöver vara dimensionerad för.

    Rapporten följer en webbapplikation som inte är förberedd för uppskalning till att bli separerad i olika komponenter för ökad skalbarhet och driftsäkerhet.

    I rapporten genomförs även en komparativ studie på olika typer av molntjänster som erbjuder infrastruktur (IaaS)-, plattform (PaaS)- och mjukvara (SaaS) som en tjänst.

    Målet med undersökningen var att hitta en kostnadseffektiv metod för att expandera applikationens infrastruktur och flytta implementationen till molnet.

    Resultatet och slutsatsen visar att den dyraste lösningen inte alltid är den bästa och i slutändan kan företag betalar pengar för resurser som de inte utnyttjar.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this project was to investigate if expanded metal screens can deflect the flow around a bend, into the reactor of a selective catalytic reduction unit and to find a way of determining which screen would be optimal.

    The current solution is very heavy compared to expanded metal. Construction costs may be reduced if the expanded metal screens work.

    A screen is needed to minimize the wear on the catalysts in the reactor.

    For this project a model , in scale 1/10, measuring equipment, consisting of Prandtl-tubes, an anemometer and smoke torches were used. Eight different expanded metal screens were tested.

    The results showed that the expanded metal works well for the purposes of deflecting flow. The angle of the flow entering the catalysts was good, and the flow was evenly distributed across the cross-section of the reactor.

    Detta arbete undersöker hur information kan författas och hanteras genom en produktionskedjas olika medier och aktörer med medvetenhet om dess destination och utan att innebörd förvrängs. Vidare om en instruktion för författande kan underlätta författarprocessen samt att öka användarupplevelsen av producerad text. För att svara på forskningsproblemet utförs en teoretisk analys på litteratur förenlig med interaktionsdesign som mynnar i 35 stycken riktlinjer för design av talad text. Vidare genomförs en målinventering med tre textförfattare och med 13 museibesökare. Med utgångspunkt i framtagna riktlinjer och resultat av målinventering skapas en skrivinstruktion. Skrivinstruktionens funktionalitet valideras i en användartest med textförfattare. Resultatet tyder på att skrivinstruktionen sannolikt hjälper författare i sin arbetsprocess och att författares uppfattning är att text skriven med instruktionen är mer tillgänglig. Detta tillsammans med stöd av riktlinjer och validerande intervjuer indikerar att budskap kan författas och passera en informationskedjas olika aktörer med minimal förvrängning; Om medvetenhet om uppgift, innebörd och omfattning finns hos dess aktörer, samt om medvetenhet finns om andra aktörer, mottagare och deras informations- och upplevelsebehov. Vidare om text semantiskt kan anpassas till kommunikationens slutdestination

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to investigate which mathematical contents preeschool teachers visible when using the picture book Little O and all the others. In order to answer the study questions, both observations and qualitative interviews have been used. Two preeschool teachers from one preeschool were selected. The children who participated in the observations were  4-5 years old. The results show that preeschool teachers reveal a broad mathematical content in the above mentioned picture book. They focus on numbers, countingchants, counting numbers and compare the shape and size. Conversations about the number 0 and the importance of it takes place. They reflect and resonate with the children of different mathematical phenomena they encounter in the picture book by virtue of its images. Preeschool teachers also give several examples of how the children have developed mathematical concepts. They also utilize both the diversity and the variety of mathematics that the picture book offers.

    Abstract [en]

    We report on highly Mn-doped GaAs nanowires (NWs) of high crystalline quality fabricated by ion beam implantation, a technique that allows doping concentrations beyond the equilibrium solubility limit. We studied two approaches for the preparation of Mn-doped GaAs NWs: First, ion implantation at room temperature with subsequent annealing resulted in polycrystalline NWs and phase segregation of MnAs and GaAs. The second approach was ion implantation at elevated temperatures. In this case, the single-crystallinity of the GaAs NWs was maintained, and crystalline, highly Mn-doped GaAs NWs were obtained. The electrical resistance of such NWs dropped with increasing temperature (activation energy about 70 meV). Corresponding magnetoresistance measurements showed a decrease at low temperatures, indicating paramagnetism. Our findings suggest possibilities for future applications where dense arrays of GaMnAs nanowires may be used as a new kind of magnetic material system.

    Abstract [en]

    The present investigation describes the mathematical communication between the special needs teacher and pupils with mathematical disabilities. The empirical data consists of two mathematics lessons from grade 9 in the compulsory school. The data was analyzed in order to find different kinds of communication. The teachers were in many ways aware of their way to communicate with pupils and the teaching environment felt confident. During the lessons two parallel languages were observed, one everyday related and one mathematical language. It was found that keeping a distinct approach to the mathematical language can facilitate student learning and make the teacher aware about teaching communicatively with steering documents goals in focus.

    ABSTRAKT

    Matematiken bör väcka lust och nyfikenhet. Skolverket menar att elevers lust att lära i de tidiga skolåren fortfarande är stor, innehållet i matematikundervisningen är omväxlande och eleven får aktivera alla sina sinnen. Dock visar undersökningar att den laborativa matematiken i undervisningen snabbt minskar i omfattning upp i skolåren.

    Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka hur och varför lärare använder laborativ matematik i skolans tidiga år. Resultatet av studien grundar sig på intervjuer och observationer av tre lärare som undervisar elever i år 1-3. Samtliga lärare i studien arbetar laborativt i någon omfattning.

    Undersökningen visar att lärarna arbetar för att matematikundervisningen ska ge eleven förståelse för matematiken och möjlighet till kreativitet och variation. Lärarna använder ett brett spektrum av laborativt material.

    Undersökningen visar vidare att laborativ matematik ger möjligheter som väger tyngre än de upplevda hindren med arbetssättet. Hinder för undervisningen som framkommer i intervjuerna är tids- och materialbrist. Lärarna är eniga om att arbetssättet gynnar alla elever. Tankesätt synliggörs på ett sätt som gör att eventuella missuppfattningar kan klargöras. Kommunikationen har stor betydelse i det laborativa arbetet. Störst möjlighet till utveckling finns i par- eller grupparbetet.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    The purpose of this study was to examine which aspects of experience that consumers experience in a physical single brand store that should be emulated and lifted into the same corporate digital store. It has also been to see how well companies communicate their core values to their consumers in the physical store. Finally, I examined what’s important when it comes to features, functions, and generally experience for consumers when shopping online in general.

    Research questions

    What makes this study particularly interesting is that the single brand companies in this study have a physical and digital store where they sell their products, but they also have resellers who sell the same products and thus becomes their competitors. Since these single brand companies have a brand quality and core values that they need to live up to, they can’t reduce the prices of their products in the same way their retail stores do. Would the solution be to try to simulate the experience consumer’s get in the physical store into the digital store to convey a good brand experience?

    Conclusion

    This study was based on a model that describes how a good user experience can be created. The results have shown that companies need to work more with the user experience in their digital store. They could achieve this by working more actively with their consumers and try to understand who they are and how they look at their brand.     Abstract [en]

    This report covers an investigation of different load balancing algorithms in Linux Virtual Server. The investigation was done in a web cluster (with Apache as the software being used) consisting of three heterogeneous nodes, where the operating system was the detail that differentiated the nodes. The operating systems that were used in the investigation were Windows Server 2008 R2, CentOS 6.2 and FreeBSD 9.0. The factors examined were average response time at different load and how many connections the cluster could cope with, these factors were examined by measurements taken with the tool httperf.

    The investigation gives an answer to how a heterogeneous web clustersaverage response time and working capacity can be affected by the choice of load balancing algorithm. The result shows that the average response time stays low until a sudden rise occurs. Shortest Expected Delay and Weighted Least-Connection Scheduling could handle the largest number of connections.

    Abstract [en]

    This study deals with push technology, a technology to send real-time data within web applications.

    Many times in today's more inter-active web an alternative way of processing data may be needed. Because of this, the topic seemed relevant in the context of web development.

    The aim is to examine how far this technique contrasts with other techniques to transport data. To investigate the push technology an application was created using a framework for this purpose. As a framework for the exercise the APE framework, containing a complete solution for push technology on the web, was chosen.

    As a basis for the report a gaming application was developed and a number of performance tests as well as an evaluation of the framework APE were made.

    Det finns ett behov av att kombinera förmågor och variation i undervisningen i högre kurser på gymnasiet då det uppfattas som att kurserna blir mer abstrakta, ensidiga och läroboksbundna. Syftet är att höja elevernas måluppfyllelse. Genom litteraturstudie av matematisk förmåga och variationsteori tillverkas eller väljs ut exempeluppgifter som sedan analyseras på vilket sätt de kan variera. Det visar sig att begreppsförmågan varieras mest följt av problemlösningsförmågan och båda har ovanliga uppgifter som den mest varierbara uppgiftstypen. När det gäller verklighetsnära uppgifter är det viktigt att de är anpassade till elevernas förkunskaper för att erbjuda meningsfull variation.

    Hospital Information System (HIS) is considered as an important factor in health care sector for managing the administrative, financial and clinical aspects of a hospital. A large number of hospitals from both developing and developed countries are adopting hospital information system to bring efficiency in their current system. Current study is conducted to contribute to the literature regarding HIS implementation in developing country settings as there is scarce literature. This study attempts to improve the understanding of HIS implementation in developing countries.

     In this study, socio technical model is used to understand the current working system of cardiology department of Combined Military Hospital (CMH). Qualitative case study is conducted for this research. Data is collected with the help of interviews done online via Skype and some secondary data resources to highlight the problems and solutions before HIS implementation. The data collection, generation of results and analysis is done on the basis of structure, people, technology, and process perspective originating from the socio-technical model. Findings of this study are presented in the form of recommendations which need to be considered for making a HIS implementation plan.

    Abstract [en]

    Model View Controller (MVC) software architecture is widely spread and commonly used in application’s development. Therefore generation of data layer for the database model is able to reduce cost and time. After research on current Object Relational Mapping (ORM) tools, it was discovered that there are generating tools like Data Access Object (DAO) and Hibernate, however their usage causes problems like inefficiency and slow performance due to many connections with database and set up time. Most of these tools are trying to solve specific problems rather than generating a data layer which is an important component and the bottom layer of database centred applications.

    The proposed solution to the problem is an engineering approach where we have designed a tool named Generated Intelligent Data Layer (GIDL). GIDL tool generates small models which create the main data layer of the system according to the Database Model. The goal of this tool is to enable and allow software developers to work only with object without deep knowledge in SQL.

    The problem of transaction and commit is solved by the tool. Also filter objects are constructed for filtering the database. GIDL tool reduced the number of connections and also have a cache where to store object lists and modify them. The tool is compared under the same environment with Hibernate and showed a better performance in terms of time evaluations for the same functions. GIDL tool is beneficial for software developers, because it generates the entire data layer.

    Abstract

     

    In this thesis computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out on a two-stage axial flow fan manufactured by Fläkt Woods. The fans are used in modern boiler plants.

     

    Geometrical modifications of the two-stage axial flow fan are investigated theoretically with the aim to improve the efficiency and reduce the noise of the fan. As a consequence the cost for electricity and acoustic treatment for the boiler plant will be lowered. These modifications are adjustments of the upstream curvature of the guide vanes in front of the first impeller and an increase of the size of the inlet box or introduction of two extra guide vanes in the inlet box. Two properties, directly related to sound generation of the fan are, used in the optimization: 1) high uniformity of the flows upstream of the first rotor and 2) low pressure drop in the inlet box.

    The engineering finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics, is used for the geometrical modifications in the model and the CFD simulations.

    The simulations have shown that the best geometrical modifications investigated in this thesis is to increase the size of the inlet box. This has showed an improvement in both uniformity of the flow and pressure drop.

    Den här uppsatsen utreder möjligheterna att realisera e-Deltagande genom webb 2.0.Genom att kombinera teori från de båda ämnena och observationer från nämnvärda utförda realiseringar, utvecklas en mall till en webbtjänst för e-Deltagande som nyttjar funktioner från webb 2.0.

    Ur litteraturstudier och observationer identifierades ett antal nyckelfunktioner samt vilka aktuella problem som finns inom realisering av e-Deltagande. Dessa problemområden var: anonymitet, moderation, att slutplacering baseras på exponeringstid, att liknande bidrag tar röster från varandra samt röstningsmetod. För att lösa dessa genomfördes en process för deltagande design med testdeltagare från olika intressegrupper i området. Utvecklingen genomgick tre iterationer med framställning av prototyp och testsessioner under vilka mallens olika lösningar och funktioner optimerades och validerades.

    Uppsatsen bidrar med ett steg i utforskningen av området. Genom att tillämpa den mall som tagits fram kan offentliga instanser konsultera sina medborgare för att generera fram nya idéer och engagera dem i samhällsutformningen.

    A humans’ way of thinking and making decisions is an absolute unique feature of hers. It is unique because every single person has different understandings, experiences and values. This research is about understands how it is possible to affect a person’s way of making decisions, through manipulating an interface, and what factors includes in decision-making. As there are many factors that have an impact on decision-making, was this research specialized on the user and his cognitive characteristics, such as, attention and perception, as well as a recess on decision-making and interface design. This was done to get the result of how an interface affects a human that interacts with it.There were several methods used, during this research, such as a survey, personas, prototypes, user tests and observations, to get enough data to analyze. There are several elements that have an impact on a humans decision-making, and a model has been made that works as a guideline for interface design. The model describes what elements effect and how they affect a person, through an interface. After making user tests and personas, were these results compared to the model, which could give a proper answer to this research. An important factor that was noticed, was that hot and cold media plays an important role in an interface design, since hot and cold media can be interpreted differently by a person.

    This paper is about the current state of affairs when it comes tothe Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) inCondition Monitoring (CM) and Maintenance.     Product lifecycle simulation (PLCS) has been given ever moreattention as the manufacturers are competing with the quality and lifecyclecosts of their products. Especially, the need of companies to try to get a strongposition in providing services for their products and thus to make themselvesless vulnerable to changes in the market has led to high interest in PLCS. Ashort summary of current status of PLCS is presented especially related to thepoor integration of data in product lifecycle management systems and in PLCS.The potential of applying semantic data management to solve these problems isthoroughly discussed in the light of recent development. A basic roadmap howthe above-described problems could be tackled with open software solutions ispresented. Finally, this paper reviews the emergent Web technologies such asthe Semantic Web framework and the Web services.

    Denna studie presenterar en ny synvinkel inom ämnet att göra hasardspel online mer realistiska. Fjorton personer spelade i tjugo minuter två versioner av ett välkänt franskt roulettespel där utvalda variabler loggades. Den ena versionen fungerade precis som i ett skarpt läge medan den andra innehöll en implementation av kontextfaktorbaserade ljudeffekter. Utifrån loggningen av variabler, samt en kompletterande enkätundersökning, räknades det sedan ut om det förekom någon skillnad mellan versionerna och, i förlängning, spellupplevelsen.

    Resultatet jag fick fram redovisade förändringar i några av de variabler som hade valts ut och enkätundersökningen indikerade på att det kan ha varit ljudeffekterna som skapat denna förändring.

    När Windows Vista introducerades förändrades mappstrukturen för hur användarprofilen sparas jämfört med tidigare Windowsversioner såsom Windows XP. Denna rapport undersöker kompatibilitetsproblem med Roaming User Profiles mellan äldre och nyare versioner av operativsystemet. Syftet med rapporten var att utreda vilka problem som kan uppstå, vad det gäller Roaming User Profiles, vid en övergång från Windows XP till Windows Vista eller 7. Undersökningen genomfördes med hjälp av laborationer, litteratur och tester för att hitta problemen såväl som lösningar till dem. Resultatet visar att profiler skapade med Windows XP inte följer med till Windows Vista eller 7 utan det skapas sammanlagt två olika profiler, en för det äldre och en för det nyare operativsystemet. Ett skript som kopierar en användares filer från Windows XP till Vista/7 utformades därför. Slutligen presenterades en handlingsplan med olika alternativ vid en övergång från Windows XP till den nyare generationen av operativsystemen i Windowsfamiljen. Folder Redirection är en väl fungerande lösning dock går funktionaliteten som Roaming User Profiles erbjuder förlorad eftersom man endast får en uppmappning av bl.a. ”Mina Dokument” och ”Start Menu”.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis deals with the problems you face as a new game developer for the mobile platform Android when developing a 3D game and presents solutions to these problems. It also explores which optimizations should be made to increase performance and how well suited for game development the Android platform is. A simple 3D game for version 2.2 of Android was developed to examine this. The conclusion was that a good game structure for Android separates logic and rendering by running these separately in different threads. Solutions to rendering and updating of game logic were presented and optimizations were implemented for performance, although fewer optimizations were needed than was anticipated. In conclusion, Android is well suited for game development and a powerful platform for developers.

    Abstract [en]

    When needing to search for data in multiple datasets there is a risk that not all da-tasets are of the same type. Some might be in XML-format; others might use a re-lational database. This could frighten developers from using two separate datasets to search for the data in, because of the fact that crafting different search methods for different datasets can be time consuming.

    One option that is greatly overlooked is the usage of regular expressions. If a search expression is created it can be used in a majority of database engines as a “WHERE” statement and also in other form of data sources such as XML.

    This option is however, at best, poorly documented and few tests have been made in how it performs against traditional search methods in databases such as “LIKE”.

    Multiple experiments comparing “LIKE” and “REGEXP” in MySQL have been performed for this paper. The results of these experiments show that the possible overhead by using regular expressions can be motivated when considering the gain of only using one search phrase over several data sources.

    Solid State Drives (SSD) are now becoming  more common as storage and is about to  become  an  alternative  to  magnetic  disks.  This  report  studied  how  to  best  utilize SSDs in a MySQL database. This study was carried out using experiments in which performance benchmarks were made to get an accurate view on which configuration of  SSDs  that  gives  the  best  performance  in  MySQL.  The  benchmarks  where  made with sql-bench and mysqlslap.   The  results  indicate  that  a  database  using  only  SSD  storage  performs  equal  to  a database of solid-state cache under the majority of the tests and shows better results than the remaining configurations that include a database on a single hard drive and a configuration with the transaction log on a SSD.

    Denna B-uppsats tar upp prestanda och återställning mellan två vanligt förekommande mjukvarubaserade RAID-system. Mjukvarubaserad RAID har blivit mer och mer intressant eftersom det är ett billigt och bra sätt att skydda sig mot hårdvarufel på hårddiskar. Tidigare har det inneburit prestandaförluster om man inte har använt en hårdvarubaserad RAID kontroller men med dagens snabba processorer är det inte längre så. Hårddiskar går för eller senare sönder och för ett RAID-system som ska vara igång tjugofyra timmar om dygnet är det viktigt att det även då fungerar med bra prestanda. Denna undersökning visar hur mycket sämre prestandan blir under sådana omständigheter samt hur lång återställningstid man kan förvänta sig på ett datorssystem uppbyggt av delar för hemmabruk. Undersökningen utfördes på två olika typer mjukvarubaserad RAID, ett med mdadm på Ubuntu/Linux och ett med RAID-Z på OpenSolaris. På de systemen mättes läs- och skrivprestanda med programmet bonnie++ som skriver och läser en fil som var dubbelt så stor som primärminnet i datorn. Resultatet visar att prestandan försämras med 36 % när en hårddisk går sönder på ett system med mdadm men med RAID-Z ökar istället prestandan. På ett system med mdadm är återställningstiden för ett degraderat system är ungefär lika lång oavsett hur mycket information som finns lagrad på hårddiskarna. Däremot går det fortare med RAID-Z eftersom den på ett intelligent sätt bara återställer den del av hårddisken som används för lagring av filer.

In this case the focus is on the communication of the soft product quality within an organization to achieve right quality. To fulfill the aim of this study a case company has been used to be able to show the absence in the topic. The questions of the study are: How have the customer’s needs been communicated within the organization? What absences are there today concerning the communication of the customer’s needs within the organization? How can the communication of the customer’s needs within the organization improve?

    The aim of this study is to describe and analyse how the transmitting of the customer’s needs concerning soft product quality is made today in the case company and to reach any improving suggestions. The vision of the study is to be a tool for other companies in a equal situation.

    The study has been performed through observations and interviews to make a base for reviews of the organizations processes. Then a Gap-analysis where made to identify absence in the present processes, then an ishikawa diagram followed to identify the main problem. A meeting was then held with the case company to discuss what’s been identified.

    The result of the study shows that the case company communicates hard and soft product quality in different ways. The soft product quality is tacit knowledge and difficult to write and transmit. The hard product quality on the other hand is explicit knowledge and always written and transmitted to everyone. Why the soft product quality doesn´t become communicated can be due to the difficulty to transmitting and incomprehension why the knowledge should be communicated to every personnel. An understanding why and what the gains are with spreading the knowledge must be created for those who possess the knowledge. A commitment by the personnel to embrace the knowledge must be made to achieve this. This study shows that the spoken communication is the major and best way to transmit the soft product quality in the case company.

    Purpose: This paper aims to describe the relevance of social media to smaller firms, the challenges and opportunities they face and what strategies they use, in the interaction with their customers.

    Methodology: The study is qualitative in nature and has an abductive approach. The empirical material consists of in-depth interviews with chosen companies and Internet observations.

    Theoretical perspectives: Social Media, Web 2.0, Co-creation, Viral marketing, Word of Mouth

    Empirical foundation: The study takes its empirical base from in-depth interviews with representatives from the small companies and internet observations connected to these.

    Conclusions: Smaller companies have great interest in social media. They preferably use Facebook, blogs, YouTube and Twitter. Their strategy is mainly to be very active and update their social media regularly. The opinion of the companies is that social media offer several possibilities such as stronger relationships with customers and the ability to collect information about the market.

    Jag har undersökt möjligheterna för hur problemlösande legoaktiviteter kan stärka och utveckla barns matematiklärande. Metoderna jag använt mig av är filmade observationer, kompletterande intervjuer och enkäter. I studien observerades barn för att ta reda på hur barn löser och förmedlar egna och andras problemlösningar vid legobyggandet. Pedagoger observerades för att ta reda på möjligheterna kring hur materialet lego kan stärka och utveckla barns matematiklärande. Några barn intervjuades i ett kompletterande syfte för att öka min egen förståelse. Jag har även använt en enkätundersökning för att få en bred bakgrundsfakta om pedagogernas uppfattningar kring materialet legos möjligheter att stärka och utveckla barns matematiklärande i problemlösande legoaktiviteter. Resultatet visar möjligheterna kring lego, problemlösning och matematiklärande med pedagogernas och lekens avgörande betydelse. Vid legobananbyggandet visar resultatet att barnens kreativtet bidrog till möjligheter för både lösningar och strategier. Legobananbyggandet resulterade i 4 olika kategorier av lösningar. Vid byggandet efter ritning/beskrivning, där det redan finns en färdig lösning visar barnen en osäkerhet när de använder sig av en strategi som följer ett visst mönster.

    Applied Research in System Analysis (ARiSA) AB, is a company whose main objective is to market the VizzAnalyzer™ software quality tool and related services, experiences, and research results.

    In the beginning, recording the time spent on different activities and projects for project control, cost calculation, and customer billing manually and individually was sufficient and effective. With the number of projects and people involved at a time increasing the existing mechanisms were not sufficient anymore and needed to be replaced to support an efficient recording of time and report generation.

    To solve this situation, a prototype of a web-based time tracking system was implemented. The task for this thesis was to build on the existing prototype implementation, to improve and complete it. In detail, to extend the functionalities of the web application adding user, project and activity management, and report creation.

    The solution supports an efficient time tracking for employees and it makes the report generation easier.

    This thesis describes the requirements for the project and the resulting implementation.

    În ultima perioadă s-a abordat tot mai des problema implementării unor dispozitive de intrare care să sprijine interacţiunea 3D prin oferirea a 6 sau a mai multor grade de libertate (degrees of freedom sau DoF). Cu toate acestea, astfel de dispozitive care să fie disponibile pentru interacţiune liberă în spaţiu - adică fără a fi necesară o suprafaţă ca sistem de referinţă, cum este cazul unui mouse - sunt proiectate doar pentru un tip restrâns de aplicaţii. De asemenea, aparatele de intrare de acest tip sunt rareori intuitive în utilizare şi limitate ca număr. Pentru a combate aceste probleme, în acest articol propunem un dispozitiv de complexitate şi costuri de implementare reduse, care poate fi utilizat în spaţiul liber şi este extrem de configurabil, susţinând nativ o interacţiune intuitivă cu variate medii virtuale. R3 (roll - rostogolire, rotate - rotire, rattle - agitare) oferă acurateţea necesară pentru navigare şi indicare - atât în 2D, cât şi în 3D – în aplicaţii de modelare şi jocuri, dar şi feedback tactil prin prezenţa unui trackball, toate acestea într-o manieră orientată spre utilizator. În plus, dispozitivul poate fi trecut uşor în modul de mouse, oferind astfel oricând suport pentru interacţiunea cu sistemele de operare convenţionale.

    Insight represents a special element of knowledge building. From the beginning of their lives, humans experience moments of insight in which a certain idea or solution becomes as clear to them as never before. Especially in the field of visual representations, insight has the potential to be at the core of comprehension and pattern recognition. Still, one problem is that this moment of clarity is highly unpredictable and complex in nature, and many scientists have investigated different aspects of its generation process in the hope of capturing the essence of this eureka (Greek, for "I have found") moment.

    In this paper, we look at insight from the spectrum of information visualization. In particular, we inspect the possible correlation between epiphanies and emotional responses subjects experience when having an insight. In order to check the existence of such a connection, we employ a set of initial tests involving the EPOC mobile electroencephalographic (EEG) headset for detecting emotional responses generated by insights. The insights are generated by open-ended tasks that take the form of visual riddles and visualization applications. Our results suggest that there is a strong connection between insight and emotions like frustration and excitement. Moreover, measuring emotional responses via EEG during an insight-related problem solving results in non-intrusive, nearly automatic detection of the major Aha! moments the user experiences. We argue that this indirect detection of insights opens the door for the objective evaluation and comparison of various visualizations techniques.

    Ensuring a constant flow of information is essential for offeringquick help in different types of disasters. In the following, we report on a workin-progress distributed, collaborative and tangible system for supporting crisismanagement. On one hand, field operators need devices that collect information—personal notes and sensor data—without interrupting their work. Onthe other hand, a disaster management system must operate in different scenariosand be available to people with different preferences, backgrounds and roles.Our work addresses these issues by introducing a multi-level collaborative systemthat manages real-time data flow and analysis for various rescue operators.

    Humans have dreamed for centuries to control their surroundings solely by the power of theirminds. These aspirations have been captured by multiple science fiction creations, like theNeuromancer novel by William Gibson or the Brainstorm cinematic movie, to name just a few.Nowadays these dreams are slowly becoming reality due to a variety of brain-computer interfaces(BCI) that detect neural activation patterns and support the control of devices by brain signals.

    An important field in which BCIs are being successfully integrated is the interaction withvehicular systems. In this paper we evaluate the performance of BCIs, more specifically a commercialelectroencephalographic (EEG) headset, in combination with vehicle dashboard systemsand highlight the advantages and limitations of this approach. Further, we investigate the cognitiveload that drivers experience when interacting with secondary in-vehicle devices via touchcontrols or a BCI headset. As in-vehicle systems are increasingly versatile and complex, it becomesvital to capture the level of distraction and errors that controlling these secondary systemsmight introduce to the primary driving process. Our results suggest that the control with theEEG headset introduces less distraction to the driver, probably as it allows the eyes of the driverto remain focused on the road. Still, the control of the vehicle dashboard by EEG is efficientonly for a limited number of functions, after which increasing the number of in-vehicle controlsamplifies the detection of false commands.

    Evaluating new approaches, be it new interaction techniques, new applications or even new hardware, is an important task, which has to be done to ensure both usability and user satisfaction. The drawback of evaluating subjective parameters is that this can be relatively time consuming, and the outcome is possibly quite imprecise. Considering the recent release of cost-efficient commercial EEG headsets, we propose the utilization of electro-encephalographic (EEG) devices for evaluation purposes. The goal of our research is to evaluate if a commercial EEG headset can provide cutting-edge support during user studies and evaluations. Our results are encouraging and suggest that wireless EEG technology is a viable alternative for measuring subjectivity in evaluation scenarios.
