'The Roaring 30s': Style, intertextuality, space and history in Marvel Noir2015Inngår i: Studies in Comics, ISSN 2040-3232, E-ISSN 2040-3240, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 5-23Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses Marvel Comics’ Marvel Noir franchise, published between 2009 and 2011. Taking as its starting point the promise in a 2008 press release that in the comics, Marvel superheroes would ‘meet’ film noir in a new continuity set in the ‘roaring 30s’, the article considers the advertised ‘meeting’ from three different angles: (1) Marvel Noir’s relationship to ‘classic’ film noir; (2) intertextuality in Marvel Noir; and (3), the franchise’s engagement with space and history. In the first instance, drawing on recent film noir scholarship, the article argues that for historical reasons, Marvel Noir manages only to evoke a pastiched ‘image’ of noir drawn from a popular conception of what noir is. Second, it highlights how the heterogeneity of the franchise’s intertextual orbit further defers the ‘meeting’ and that, ultimately, because it builds upon and anticipates the seriality of regular superhero fictions, the real content of the stories is neither film noir nor other historical popular culture, but rather earlier Marvel stories. Third, it looks at how space and history are figured. Although a few exceptions that deal with racial formation are discussed, space appears as largely anonymous ‘images’ that deepen the image of noir while history is generally connoted through a vague sense of ‘pastness’. By way of concluding, the article notes that the postmodern depthlessness of the franchise’s ‘meeting’ with film noir is to be expected, given the style’s historical progresses. Rather, while Marvel Noir perhaps represents an attempt to escape the present through a postmodern play with nostalgia, intertextuality and surfaces, the choice of setting and the recurrent confirmation of the superhero genre’s primacy betrays a return of the repressed, in which the past becomes an unuttered hope for the future.

'X marks the spot': Urban dystopia, slum voyeurism and failures of identity in District X2015Inngår i: Journal of Urban Cultural Studies, ISSN 2050-9790, Vol. 2, nr 1-2, s. 34-56Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article studies the ‘imaginative mapping’ of a real-world neighbourhood in one comic book series: lower Manhattan’s Alphabet City in writer David Hine and artists David Yardin and Lan Medina’s District X (July 2004–January 2006). In contrast to a long-standing claim to ‘realism’ in Marvel’s use of New York City, this article argues that the real Alphabet City – at the time a contested and rapidly gentrifying neighbourhood – is nowhere to be found in District X, replaced by a voyeuristic fabrication, a sensationalistic node of concentration for middle-class fears about urban decline and blight amid prosperity and contemporary discourses about drugs, crime and homelessness that reproduces long-standing cultural representations of the neighbourhood as different and inferior. In doing so, the series polices a boundary of identity, empathy and imagination and tells readers that force in favour of clearing out radical difference in the neighbourhood and making it into a space fit for ‘normal’ people is natural, rational and logical and in the best interest even of those who might be displaced by gentrification, disproportionately incarcerated in the name of ‘law and order’, or put at risk of their lives in dangerous shelters.

    Abstract [en]

Edward Said's book Orientalism (1978) is the most important reference point in the post-colonial theory and describes how the West is dominant over the Orient. There is a clear distinction between "us" and "the other" and the purpose of this study is that, from a postcolonial perspective, focusing on Said's theoretical concepts "the other" and "discourse", examining how two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds living in the same place, are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes. My questions to answer this are; “what are the concepts of "the other" and "discourse" and is it possible to use these concepts to examine how foreign-born people are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes in a specific location?”, “who is "the other" in a place where there are almost as many native Swedes as foreign-born?”, and “how do these two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds perceive Norrliden as a place and what effect has that place had on their identity?” I have used a post-colonial philosophical ground and a qualitative approach, focusing on two different interviews with two men, living in Norrliden. In Norrliden almost 50% of the inhabitants are foreign-born were both of the interview-persons are feeling safe and secure. They both believe that the place has had an important impact of their lives and their identities, but their identities are just “immigrants” and not their ethnical belongings. Foreign persons often feel that they have no natural place in society and therefore feel that they do not fit in there. Sweden has become a country of "we" and "the other, and one of the interview-persons believes the Swedes to be" the other "in Norrliden, while the other person believes that it is the Kurds. He argues that foreign-born persons will always be "the other", due to the fact that these people will never be Swedish. They both sense that when their own ethnical group, while visiting their home-countries, are questioning them about ethnicity and origin, the result is that none of them feel at home anywhere. Not in their home-countries and not in Sweden. They have no natural place in any of the communities and they feel both constantly as "the other", no matter what country they find themselves in.

Ett Omtvistat Himmelrike: En komparativ historiebruksanalys av Ridley Scotts epos Kingdom of Heaven med utgångspunkt i postkolonial och genusinriktad teoribildning2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The following study is a comparative analysis on the usage of history in Ridley Scott’s epic Kingdom of Heaven. Based on the thesis that this movie has a lot to say about contemporary political values, it compares the theatrical version from 2005 with the 45 minute extended Director’s Cut, which came out on DVD in 2006. Firmly based in the popular-cultural context I tried to evaluate whether these changes related in any way, to matters concerning the current gender debate and post-colonial theory. The comparison was made in order to try and determine whether the changes made in-between the two versions contained significant political hotspots, which in turn related to my scientific theories. In a contemporary context characterized by gender issues as well as religious warfare, secularism and multiculturalism, I found this movie particularly interesting to analyze.

Concerning the results of my analysis, I found the extended version to be containing a significant amount of political hotspots, which were cut out of the theatrical version. From a gender perspective I found the roles of gender to be problematized in the extended cut, especially when one takes into account that the movies female protagonist became more multifaceted than in the theatrical cut. Regarding the postcolonial, I found the extended version to be heavily influenced by contemporary values in the matter. The secular humanistic and multicultural-affirming message which defined both versions was made more obvious in the Director’s Cut. Fundamentalism was heavily criticized regardless of the characters’ cultural origins.

    Abstract [en]

Some of the sand dune areas in the bay of Laholm have a protection value from a European perspective. The head questions for this study were: In what way does a beach have value for the people who live nearby? What activities are being practiced in the bay of Laholm during the different seasons? A didactic reflection follows in relation to the courses Geography 1 and 2 in the Swedish upper secondary school. The theoretical framework was Haggett (1983). He talks about the beach as a metaphor for the world. The chosen method was a sound-recorded and transcribed interviews with anonymous adults, who live near the beach in the Bay of Laholm. The result demonstrates how the beach was valuable for all the respondents in different ways. The categories for question one were: Optimism, conflict of interests, disharmony, freedom and beach relation. The result also showed how different activities were taking place at the beach both during the bathing season and off season. The categories for question two were: Movement, location, obstacle, entertainment and recovery. Is there any connection between the fact that the respondents live close to the beach and how they value the beach? If the beach is associated with negativity, does it affect the chosen activity? In Geography 1 and 2, the beach could be a theme to work with in several central contents. Haggett’s metaphor is also a suitable foundation. The hidden curriculum is important in this context - what values is created by the chosen content? In Geography 1 and 2, the teaching should be based not only on the central content, but also with the abilities and the knowledge requirements. Future research could investigate how valuable the beach is for people who live further away and what kind of activities there are at other beaches in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor´s thesis analyzes the debate in a number of Swedish media regarding the introduction of video games as a new medium in the public libraries. The theory and method used is discourse analysis. Three questions were asked: how the introduction of video games as a new media in libraries is discussed, how is it motivated and in what way the authors of the articles analyzed are speaking about new media and the mission of the library.

The selected articles were divided into four themes and the analysis resulted in the identification of two main discourses, one which is positive to the introduction and integration of new media in the libraries’ collections, and one which has a more negative approach and uses quality and culture as an argument.

The conclusion is that video games are a medium so widely used that librarians have to decide whether or not they want to include it in the libraries’ collections, and by deciding this they reveal their attitude towards the mission and purpose of the public library.

Information som spelar en roll: En studie i teaterhögskolestudenters informationsbehov2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to examine the information needs and behavior of Swedish theater students. The aim is to get an increased insight into how theater students search and use information as they create their character roles and also to examine how the information seeking is integrated in the creative process. The findings of this study have been made through qualitative data gathered from five interviews with six theater students who are studying at the Swedish Theater Academy. These students studied between autumn term of 2014 and spring term of 2015. To analyze the result of the interviews four different theories’ have been used, Carol Kuhlthau’s information search process model, Lars Höglund and Olle Perssons model of four domains, Lars Höglund and Olle Perssons information search barriers and Tom Wilson’s model of information behavior. In summary the research shows that the students have to search actively for information helping them to understand the situations and circumstances that happens to their character in the play. Theater students share similarities with other university students in the way they seek information. Both groups use Google, online databases and books to immerse themselves in specific areas of research. The difference is that the theater students are more flexible in the way they use information. The barriers that are usually involved in information search do not concern the theater students in the same way. They can gather information from sources that are not generally suited for their needs and they put in a lot of effort to embody their knowledge collected from the information search. The students can also use a variety of different sources when they seek information. Sources that can’t be found online or in a book can usually be obtained through dialogue.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how special education teachers in Elementary school use libraries and how they experience collaboration with the school and public librarians and also how the collaboration might be concretized in the library's activities for the students. To achieve my purpose I conducted interviews with six special education teachers.

The result from the interviews showed that the students and the teachers use the library for many different purposes for example book loans and bringing desire to read but also for social training and communication by interacting with the librarians. The result also showed that there were no activities in the library that were just for the special need students. A common thought among the teachers where when the class doesn’t find anything interesting the librarian will because she is the one who knows about the libraries´ materials and has the ability to guide the teachers and students through the information load. Some teachers pointed out that if the librarians had more knowledge about the special need students’ disabilities the library visits could be more effective and collaboration between teacher and the librarian could make the visit better. As a theoretical framework David V. Loertschers teacher taxonomy was used. The teachers in the study most of the time were in the beginning and in the middle of the taxonomy scale, and never reached higher levels. This means that the teachers use and collaborate with the library quite passively.

Improving Somalis’ Situation in Sweden: a study on how cultural heritage can be applied to support integration2016Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This action research project is aimed to study how heritage could be applied to allow immigrants solve their own problems within their own cultural context. My study has shown great potentialities of improving the life of the people who arrived to Sweden recently and the entire community in general. The study applies a participatory com-munity approach with the methodology to conduct the research with an intention to allow immigrants identify their problems and seek solutions in a cultural context, especially in areas where the services of the Municipality and State are not covering.

    Abstract [en]

This report covers the cultural heritage Somalis have come with upon landing on a Swedish soil, how they have tried to carve a niche for their cultural heritage in Sweden, how a cultural heritage that was born in a hot land in Africa could be transformed into something that can be useful in such a developed and rather cold nation of Sweden. The report will also look on the Somali skills and how they are utilized for the purpose of establishing a working environment that promotes similarity out of their differences to get a shared heritage in the long run.

    Abstract [en]

The poor results of 15 year old Swedish students in the 2012 PISA-investigation serve as the main inspiration for this essay. Though aware that PISA measures a range of skills, including math-, science- and reading abilities, a deliberate focus has been placed on the latter. Unsatisfactory math- and science results are sure to bare consequences ahead, but poor reading skills affect the comprehension of all other subjects combined and is therefore of utmost importance. This essay explores the roles of teachers and school librarians in the promotion of reading, as well as their ways of cooperating in strengthening students' reading abilities. Questions of particular interest are: In what ways do teachers' and school librarians' views of ongoing reading promoting activities differ? How does the school and school library contribute to reading promotion and reading comprehension among students? What factors unite teachers and school librarians in their attempts to promote reading, as far as pedagogical roles are concerned?Working on this essay, a total of seven qualitative interviews were conducted. The interviews were spread among three different schools, elementary-through-high school. The material was weighed against the sociocultural perspective of learning, serving as this study's main theoretical framework. The sociocultural view states the importance of interaction in the process of learning. In accordance, my results show that reading comprehension is best approved by the interaction between students, teachers and school librarians.

Svåra möten på biblioteket: Bibliotekariers bemötande och offentlighetens konsekvenser 2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Due to the public nature of the library the librarians meet members from the entire society in one room daily and need to address the different needs of the patrons and the patrons' different expectations of the librarians' service. The aim of the thesis is to investigate public librarians' encounters with patrons, that the librarians perceive as difficult or challenging. Socially excluded groups like homeless individuals, drug users or mentally ill individuals are groups that together with teenagers can be perceived as "problem patrons". To investigate this problem six interviews with librarians were conducted. The analytical framework concists of Echeverris definition of a good reception of users, the librarians ethical guidelines and on Jürgen Habermas theory of the public sphere. The librarians perception of the public library and their own reception of the library patrons appeared to be very similar to the theoretical framework. The conclusion of this thesis is that the librarians view of the library appears to be synonymous with the meaning of public sphere and the foundations of democracy.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine what attitudes the administrators of the selected elementary schools have towards school library media centers in general but also towards their own respective library media centers. Furthermore, it is to examine the administrators’ views on their school librarian’s role in the library media center as well as an integrated part of the school activities. A branch in this purpose is to examine if there is any differences in staffing the library media centers with a library media specialist or a teacher-librarian. To fulfill these purposes seven qualitative interviews were made with four administrators and three school librarians at three different elementary schools. Loertscher’s taxonomies of the school library media program were then used to analyze the interviews. The result of the study shows that even though the administrators have visions for the library media center, they do not have enough time or funding to act on them. Therefore the conclusion is that it is not what kind of school librarian that the administrators staff their library media center with that mainly will affect the outcome of the library media center, but rather what qualifications they have and if their visions correlates with the administrator’s. Also, the size of the staffing is a key factor to whether or not the library media center will advance so that it will be able to help increase the academic achievement at the school. But most importantly the school librarian needs the administrator’s support to develop the library media center.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the public libraries work towards SFI (Swedish For Immigrants) based on the views of the overseeing librarians. To study this we have asked the following research questions:What distinguishes the public libraries’ work towards SFI according to the responsible librarians? What distinguishes the communication between SFI teachers and the librarians according to the responsible librarians? What opinions are held by the librarians in regards to their work with SFI?We have used a semi structured interview method with seven librarians in charge of the activities with SFI at small and medium sized public libraries in a rural area of Sweden. The theoretical framework is composed of Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hansen’s model for analysis of the local public library profile and the authors’ definition of collaboration. The results of this study shows that the work with SFI is characterized by a variety of activities from guided tours of the library to book clubs. Although all of the library's four profiles identified by Andersson and Skot-Hansen can be found among the activities, the role of knowledge center and social center can be said to be predominant. Furthermore the collaboration between the libraries and SFI is subject to vulnerability due to time constraints and administrative changes that hinders the work between the librarians and the SFI teachers. Communication with the teachers occur in all respondents dictum but based on the theoretical definition, only two cases of actual collaboration can be found. The communication is characterized by an irregularity and actual collaboration is rare.

    Abstract [en]

After the changes in the Swedish education act the school library has come to be a natural part of the Swedish school system, however a definition of the employee in the school library has been neglected. Three conversational interviews were executed on three Swedish secondary schools with the ambition to investigate the difference between the pedagogic works and literature intermediation from  two school librarians' and one teacher librarian's perspective. Based on the result from the interviews an analysis was  made with the profession perspective in mind. To distinguish the school libraries integration with the rest of the school  they were placed in the levels of Loertscher's (2000) taxonomy. The results show that the school libraries with the school librarians as opposed to the teacher turned out to be the most integrated with the rest of the school and had a functioning pedagogic practice with literature intermediation.

The purpose of my research has been to analyze the communi-cation of three cultural heritages and how they are being ex-posed on their respective webpages. The essay has also touched the subject as to how webpages can, through marketing of cul-tural heritages, create a connection to the marketed locations and their cultural environment. A phenomenon you could call “creating a location”. My study has also resulted in an under-standing of how historical sites as cultural actors position them-selves to attract visitors to the location. In this study I will fo-cus on only three of Sweden’s many renaissance castles. These three are Calmare-, Vadstena- and Gripsholm’s castle. My sources consist of the above mentioned cultural heritag-es own webpages, their administrators as well as their partner’s webpages. The information which is communicated in connec-tion to, or directly with the cultural heritages demonstrates what is relevant and important to see and experience.By illuminating these attributes, the possibility for self-interpretation of the cultural landscape can be lessened. Instead, a more direct picture can be created as of what the visitor should relate to and remember of the location. This way, the actors create a location.

    Crafting Cultural Heritage2016Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The making of artefacts is a core activity in society, the result of which contributes to the building up of our physical surroundings and material culture. Throughout history, craft skills have been highly appreciated and have often been seen as crucial component of a capable human. Despite this, the knowledge base that constitutes the actual making is often overlooked in research. What can we learn about things by learning about their making? How do different craft skills offer an understanding of its historical use? How can theoretical and methodological approaches be developed concerning the actual making? How can we study and understand craft as cultural heritage? This book contains a selecion of papers from the session Crafting Cultural Heritage at the Assosiation of Critical Heritage studies inaugural conference Re/theorising Heritage 2012 in Gothenburg. The contributors are Anneli Palmsköld; Thomas Laurien; Eleonora Lupo and Elena Giunta; Gunnar Almevik and Nicola Donovan. Their common interest are theories and methods of crafting that could benefit heritage studies approach to making.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis explores the library collaboration "HelGe-libraries" goals, guidelines and strategies for their resource sharing of library books and digital resources. The questions asked were: What does the resource sharing look like when it comes to media and services? What goals and guidelines do they have for the resource sharing? What common strategies do they have for the resource sharing? What challenges have they encountered with resource sharing and how have they dealt with them?

The theoretical framework consists of Jennifer Rowleys theory of innovation strategies for libraries and Rosabeth Moss Kanters theory on the art of alliances. The method used to collect material was interviews and document analysis. Four informants were interviewed.

My study concludes that the "HelGe-libraries" has formulated goals for their resource sharing and that the resource sharing is connected to their goals. The end result show that the main goal is to offer users a library service of high quality by offering a broad supply of media and information. The study also showed that the collaboration is working along various guidelines and that common strategies, formal and informal, has been developed to achieve their goals and to improve service.

Concurrences in Postcolonial Research: Perspectives, Methodologies, and Engagements2018Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The concept of concurrences is a blanket term for challenging dominating statements of the past and present. Concurrent stories have varying claims to reality and fiction, as well as different, diverging, and at times competing claims to society, culture, identity, and historical past. Dominant Western narrations about colonial power relationships are challenged by alternative sources such as heritage objects and oral traditions, enabling the voice of minorities or subaltern groups to be heard. Concurrences in Postcolonial Research is about capturing multiple voices and multiple temporalities. As such, it is both a relational and dynamic methodology and a theoretical perspective that undergirds the multiple workings of power, uncovering asymmetrical power relations. Interdisciplinary in nature, this anthology is the outcome of scholarship from the humanities and social sciences with an interest in the multiple temporality of postcolonial issues and engagements in various places across the world.

The logic of benevolent capitalism: the duplicity of Sithe Global Sustainable Oils Cameroon land grab and deforestation scheme as sustainable investment2018Inngår i: International Journal of Global Environmental Issues, ISSN 1466-6650, E-ISSN 1741-5136, Vol. 17, nr 1, s. 80-109Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This ethnographic study documents the concurrent debates pitting neoliberal ideology promoting economic growth and the generation of employment opportunities championed by the agro-industrial giant Herakles Farms, alongside the World Bank and the government of Cameroon - inherent in the establishment of a 73,086 ha oil palm plantation in Southwest Cameroon against the need for sustainable environment advocated for by local communities, NGOs and their transnational allies. Claims of benevolent capitalism are at odds with the perception and experiences of home loss and environmental degradation orchestrated by this project. The dissonance between the discourses and claims of benevolent capitalism with the perception and experiences of home loss and environmental degradation orchestrated by this project demonstrates that the neoliberal discourse of capitalist benevolence is a self-interested discourse that benefits the powerful at the expense of the subaltern. Local people should be empowered to negotiate with multinational corporations, laws recognising customary land rights instituted and implemented.

    Abstract [en]

There is little doubt that the digital technology has played a major role in reshaping the ways in which we experience the world. In a few decades the Internet has become a vast repository for knowledge and ideas. New arenas where people may meet and fraternize have emerged, and with the help of various digital tools and websites, the production of new material has increased to an almost unfathomable level.

But all is not well on the digital front. As the Internet has become a crucial part of our everyday life, certain skills in handling digital media has become very important to master. A well-developed ability to navigate through this ocean of information is needed, and knowledge in managing the risky nature of the internet is critical. The public school system plays a very important role in developing these skills among the youth.

This bachelor thesis utilizes a qualitative research approach to examine the view of digital literacy among school librarians, their work with digital literacy among the pupils and the school librarian’s role as a developer of digital literacy in the school. This thesis uses the European Commission’s description of digital literacy as a starting-point to analyze the view on digital literacy among the interviewed school librarians.

The results indicated the school librarians possessed a fairly balanced view on the subject of digital literacy, although some shortcomings also became noted. Especially the dilemma if school librarians should have responsibility in educating the youth in the usage of digital equipment or not

    Abstract [en]

The structure of the Swedish public library field has been evolving during the last decades. The traditional mission of educating the citizens to become responsible, democratic and knowledgeable members of society has in a way led to the integration between public and school libraries. Lately new co-operational models have been under debate and a sense of resistance has arisen because of the economical and market influences. In parallel with closure of library branches new libraries have evolved in malls and wash houses and some with self-service with no use of librarians. This work shows how co-operation in rural areas finds the common goals for the people living there who are concerned about keeping the service needed including the public library and thus using existing means and crossing borders of commercial thinking. Participators in the project are interviewed to find out their various wishes and a mutual goal. The degree of local democracy is also investigated. The outcome of this thesis is that in rural areas with tough municipal economy the citizens co-operate over borders to keep the services they want, and in this specific case it is found to be a meeting spot in the centre of the village, where also the library will be located, together with the country store.

    Abstract [en]

This study is built on questions around sustainable development with an alignment of water. Based on the purpose and issues of this study, the reader will hopefully get a clearer picture how states act surrounding sustainable development. Also, how conflicts affect water management between neighboring states. States have a long way to walk to reach the UN Global Sustainable Development Goals, the achievements for sustainable development is set for the year of 2030. The following study is built on a deductive issue, that are linked to theories, models, and previous research. The purpose of the study is to give the reader a clearer picture how states act to achieve sustainable water management.

This study also investigates how conflicts affect water management between states. The survey reveals that water resources around transboundary water management can contribute to stability between states. Transboundary water management promotes collaboration and conflicts can be avoided. On the other hand, there are problems for the future regarding transboundary water management. Climate change seen today may affect and downturn the possibilities of transboundary water management in the future. The climate change could possibly lead to conflicts in the future where states want control surrounding the water resources.

Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that laws, frameworks and guidelines regarding transboundary water management today consider research about the climate of the future. By building strong partnerships today surrounding water resources, food and productions maybe conflicts in the future can be prevented. Where the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals can be reached by the year of 2030. Sustainable development in school is an important part of promoting democratic citizens of the future. By discussing and teaching about sustainable development, students are given good opportunities to continue the work on sustainable development. In this study’s questionnaire survey, students find that sustainable development is something that the school should highlight. Students are also willing to sacrifice to achieve sustainable development goals.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to create a greater understanding of what knowledge students in grade nine possess in terms of climate change and global warming. How their knowledge and attitudes look, related to climate change, and if they are consistent with the teacher's teaching in the subject. This study is a multimetodic study. The methods used to arrive at the results are: survey and analysis of the survey results and interviews with teachers and analysis of their statements. The majority of students in the study prove to have good knowledge of the underlying causes of climate changes and global warming, as well as an advanced thinking in climate awareness, as well as the majority of them mentioning that research is the most reliable source. The results show that the teachers' knowledge of climate change and global warming are good in sheepskin's regard to their learning skills in the subject.

Leaning on our past: The sofa cushion as a site telling a story of rural craft in today’s society2010Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

For me as an art historian studying visual culture, the applied art represented by the embroidered surface of the sofa cushion, have proved to be an important site telling me about our recent past. In this paper I want to explore what stories are brought up to date in the modern day design revival or appropriation of the do-it-yourself (DIY) aesthetics of Swedish folk art.

Alongside the embroidered wall hanging, the embroidered sofa cushion has been one of the most frequent DIY-object in popular press. It represents the exotic, idealised country life of the urbanised Swedish people. In a recent study on early 20-century wool embroideries I noticed a turn towards the visual comfort of the past during the 1930s and 1940s. This might have been caused by the threat of war and it resulted in the increased use of national if not nationalistic symbols. In several cultural media this aesthetics is brought the surface again today. I will discuss some prominent examples, asking questions such as: What does the return, the revisiting to and reusing of these almost century old reconstructions of a rural past implicate today? When the old visual features are echoed in contemporary design, does that necessary mean that the same ideological and historical notions are evoked? Might the nationalistic overtones even be amplified in a multi cultural society? Who listens to the call from the corner of your sofa?

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

”Crafting knowledge” was a session organised by Anneli Palmsköld and Johanna Rosenqvist, that took place in Norrköping, Sweden, 16 June 2011 as part of the International ACSIS Conferences Current Issues in European Cultural Studies. Together the scholars participating in the Crafting knowledge-session were covering a range of subfields of craft studies today. The session focused on the explorative question of what an academic approach that put craft theory into practice and made craft practice into theory would consist of. This is also the main question asked in the paper “Crafting Knowledge?” that recapitulates and contextualises the outcome of the session. The paper draws up tentative categories for how research in, on and through craft can be done. By framing the knowledge emerging from craft and crafting some theories and methods of crafting are discussed. The crafted artefact and the act of making can be considered from many different aspects, for example from an artistic, historical or aesthetical point of view. Conventions of craft, rules about its making, knowledge about and knowledge through craft and crafting are some of the themes presented in a broad scope of cultural studies.

    Crafting Cultural Heritage2014Konferanseproceedings (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The making of artefacts is a core activity in society, the result of which contributes to the building up of our physical surroundings and material culture. Throughout history, craft skills have been highly appreciated and have often been seen as crucial component of a capable human. Despite this, the knowledge base that constitutes the actual making is often overlooked in research within humanities. In this publication we discuss theories and methods of crafting that might benefit cultural heritage studies approach to making, from the artistic, historical, or aesthetical point of view. We deal with discussions on questions such as: What can we learn about things by learning about their making? How do different craft skills offer an understanding of its historical use? How can theoretical and methodological approaches be developed concerning the actual making?

Fragmented stories of an editorial sewing circle are temporarily sewn together. We thereby explore what public emerged through the combination of two known situations and collectives for sharing, joining, and negotiating stories: the sewing circle and the editorial board. Although we make texts and textiles public, the focus was also on being public – inviting people to become part of the editorial sewing circle’s negotiation processes.

Konsthantverk i Sverige, del 12015Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Konsthantverk i Sverige del 1 samlar 18 författare.

    Abstract [en]

In the end of 1860 Japan faced a bloody civil war. The 200 year old Tokugawa Shogunate lost its power to the emperor and the Meiji period started. Before that the land was draw in to a civil war. Ronin samurais from all of Japan was gathering in the capital. Some of the were shouting for heaven's revenge and with it the ment the emperor´s. On the other side was the samurais still loyal to Tokugawa. One of the Shoguns loyal soldier’s history still echoes, the Shinsengumi or newly selected corps. These soldiers are still being used in movies, manga and anime to tell about a dark time in Japan's history.

This essay will discuss how anime is using historical persons and their historical period.

Also, why they are choosing to create a character with traits and talents. Also try to understand the purpose of historical use in anime.

The discussion about manga and animes purpose have been on topic before, but not in combination with how they use historical facts. Cecilia Trenter and Pelle Snickars book with theories in how movies are taking parts of history and make new use out of it.

Anime and manga are a big part of Japanese culture and the theories about them are important to understand this study. To do that i used Mark. W. McWilliams and Thomas Lamarres and their discussion about the importance of see through the layers of this creations.

Exploring how to research webisodes2019Inngår i: Media Mixing 2019: International symposium at Lund University, Sweden, 2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I explore how to research webisodes as mixed modes of media production, distribution and reception. I argue that appropriate theoretical and meta-theoretical reflections are needed to research mixed modes of media production, distribution and reception in relation to each other. I use the notion of the ‘circuit of culture’ (du Gay 2013) to describe a theoretical foundation to understand relations between how cultural products – mixed modes or not – are produced, distributed and consumed. As a mixed mode technology product, the webisode is referred to as an example. A webisode is defined by its distribution. Production aspects can be very different, for example The Walking Dead webisodes or Fan-produced re-edited soap opera webisodes. The former invites discussions on business opportunities (Peirce 2012), the latter invites discussions on audiences as readers and consumers of resistance (Dhaenens 2012). A simple example used in the paper is that audiences can be studied as and by online focus groups articulating mixed modes in various ways. The Fan-produced re-edited soap opera webisode imply that audiences can be producers at the same time, hence becoming a particular form of “privatized leisure” (du Gay 2013:104) as consumption as well as production. On the other hand, The Walking Dead webisodes are part of a commercialized setting, hence becoming a produced “privatized leisure” offered for consumption. Online traces of both the online focus groups and the traffic data of the usage of the webisodes can further knowledge on location, temporality and sharing/storing.

Castells och den Digitala Klyftan: En Litteraturstudie2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the church verger relates to the cultural heritage in their churches and how the churches are affected by their cultural heritage. I also wanted to investigate the problem in preserving a heritage that doubles as a living religious room. Finally, I wanted to know how the verger's work is influenced by the dual responsibility towards the parish and county government. In the study the vergers were interviewed about their workplace and work situation. I also interviewed the antiquarian in Växjö diocese. I then analyzed the results by using Svante Beckman’s concept categories and value typology of cultural heritage. I drew the conclusion that the church instills a feeling based on historical values. I also concluded that the verger’s knowledge and care of the church protects the cultural heritage values. This knowledge is in itself a cultural heritage that needs to be nurtured and protected. Finally, my study found that the county government and the heritage law do not cater to the needs of parishes today. The requirements demanded by the county government have become yet another stress factor in the verger’s everyday.

    Abstract [sv]

Communicating emotions and pain in the digital age2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Photographs showing words cut into the skin constitute a special category of images of self-cutting that can be seen on the internet today. The words are often related to anger, suffering and agony. As I showed in a quantitative study that included over 6 000 six thousand self-injury images, cutting words into one’s own skin might be quite common among self-injurers. Approximately fifteen per cent of the images in the study depicted words mediated through lacerations, blood and scars.

This material raises important questions about how emotions and feelings are experienced and manifested in different modes. Self-cutting involves both the visual perceived cuts and the nerve transmitted nociceptive experiences of pain. Manifestations that are perceivable by the cutter themselves. But what happens when these manifestations are photographed and published on worldwide networks, and thus become part of collective experiences? These experience are becoming the discursive tool for the production of and negotiations about the meaning of self-cutting (for instance in self-injury communities) in particular but also about the meaning of bodies, emotions and pain on a more general level.

In this paper I will argue that the media involved in this production of meaning are integrated with each other – they are in symbiosis – to use Varga’s typology. This symbiosis becomes part of a unification of individual bodies that are interacting with each other and thus creating a collective body, with a collective understanding of its emotions and pains. During this process, the individual physical experience of a body is united with a virtual body experience through the interface of the screen. This is a unification that will probably reconstruct the meaning of emotion and pain in the digital age.
