Durability of Untreated Norway Spruce (Picea abies) Exposed Outdoors Above Ground for Nine Years.2004Inngår i: Holzforschung, ISSN 0018-3830, E-ISSN 1437-434X, Vol. 58, nr 2, s. 167-172Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Moisture dynamics and durability during weather exposure as affected by origin and production method were studied for nine years on 113 untreated spruce samples. The moisture content was measured on 67 occasions. The weight loss was determined for each sample at the end of the sampling period. The most important factors, affecting both moisture content and weight loss, were origin and drying technique. The samples originating from central Sweden had the best durability, followed by the southern stand, while the northern stand had the lowest durability in terms of weight loss. Airdrying had a negative impact on the performance of samples from all three stands, but to different degrees. Samples from the northern stand were most sensitive to airdrying, in terms of both weight loss and moisture content, followed by the southern stand, while the central stand was least sensitive. Why the samples from the northern stand were more sensitive to airdrying and showed the largest weight losses is unknown; it can only be suggested that the origin of the wood can be of importance for the durability.

Mass loss and moisture dynamics of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) exposed outdoors above ground in Sweden.2005Inngår i: Holzforschung, ISSN 0018-3830, E-ISSN 1437-434X, Vol. 59, nr 2, s. 183-189Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The durability of 566 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) samples was tested during a period of 9 years of exposure to weather in Sweden. The parameters investigated were heartwood/sapwood, origin, surface treatment, end-seal, storage and drying method, annual ring width and density. The weight was measured on 67 occasions during 9 years in order to assess the moisture content of the samples. The mass loss was determined for each sample at the end of the trial. Sapwood had a higher moisture uptake and a higher mass loss compared with heartwood. Even if sapwood was painted with an impermeable paint and then end-sealed, it still had higher average moisture content than heartwood. The results also demonstrated that sapwood was more sensitive to different handling conditions than heartwood. Sapwood was sensitive to air-drying and water storage, which was evident in the higher moisture uptake. In terms of mass loss, some differences were evident but they were not statistically significant due to the large standard deviation of the sapwood samples from water-stored logs. The only positive influence of water storage was on samples end-dipped in oil. One explanation could be that water storage led to increased permeability due to bacterial attack, which in turn enhanced the penetration of the oil. Heartwood had low and stable moisture dynamics during the test period, almost independent of treatment or handling conditions. No correlation with moisture uptake or mass loss was evident among annual ring width, origin or density.

Villans park - en plats för alla2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Moisture induced stresses and deformations in parquet floors: An experimental and numerical study2009Inngår i: Wood research, ISSN 1336-4561, Vol. 54, nr 1, s. 89-101Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The indoor climate in buildings has changed in the last decade due to more efficient climatic systems, floor heating systems and larger open floor areas with more natural light. All this has induced increasing ranges of relative humidity between different seasons. Also with decreasing relative humidity (in the winter 30-50% RH, in the summer 70-90% RH), floor-heating systems increase the temperature in wooden parquet planks for example. Such variations can result in troublesome deformations, delamination of the surface layer and development of cracks in the parquet flooring boards. Sometimes there is only deterioration of the appearance but the durability of the flooring system can also be reduced. Many laboratory tests have to be done before reaching an optimal design of the parquet elements. Due to high coasts and time constraints of experiments, other supplementary research methods should be tested and evaluated. The articles' main objective was to increase understanding of the behaviour of parquet floors exposed to different climatic conditions using numerical calculation. The use of the finite element models provides options for design purposes of wood flooring systems. Several finite element models for adequate design have been created, tested and applied. After calibration and validation of the calculation method, parameter studies on the influence of material properties, geometry of the parquet floors and the long-term behaviour of the wood and glue line were performed. The results show a strong relation between material and geometry choice on the deformation, for example the gap opening and on the stress distribution in glue line, which can induce delamination of the surface layer and distortional effects of the parquet boards

Fire exposed light-frame timber walls: A study on the effect of geometrical reduction of a vertically loaded I-section stud2009Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

A wooden I-stud as a member of a light-frame timber wall is modelled with reducing flange width to simulate fire exposure. The stud is loaded with a vertical load and the effect of restraints from one gypsum board and the top and bottom rail is considered. Geometry and material values are chosen to correspond to a stud with flanges of solid wood and web of OSB (oriented strand board).

A model with shell and beam elements is implemented in Abaqus. A buckling analysis is performed on a perfectly straight stud and then a geometrically nonlinear analysis is performed on a stud with an initial curvature. Both the buckling analysis and the geometrically nonlinear analysis show that even a large reduction of the flange width results only in moderate changes of the load-carrying capacity of the structure.

In the report diagrams are presented from the geometrically nonlinear analysis where the critical load is easy to read once a failure stress is determined, but an estimate of the the failure stress is not given here.

Kompaktaggregat till Passivhus i Sverige2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    passivhus i Sverige.

Evaluation of vibration distribution from a full scale measurement in an eight storey wooden house2008Inngår i: Proceedings of ISMA2008: International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering / [ed] Sas, P. & Bergen, B., Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Department of Mechanical Engineering , 2008, s. 593-607Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Flanking transmission measurements has been done in an eight storey wooden building in Växjö, Sweden. The flanking transmission is evaluated by studying the vibration distribution from a well defined source to the flanking surfaces in the room one floor below. Besides the vibration distribution measurements the sound pressure in the room were measured. The measuring campaign shows that the used technique can be carried out to capture the flanking transmission in a direct and trustful way. The technique shows that peaks in the sound pressure can also be related to peaks in different surfaces frequency response functions. By calculating the energy distribution between surface elements it was shown that the roof in the examined room was the part that absorbed the most of the added energy from the source. Thereby it was regarded as the flanking part that needed an improved design most.

    Abstract [en]

The flanking transmission between apartments due to a structure borne source is studied. The apartments studied were two-storey houses with a wooden framework. Acoustic measurements are often made in new built apartments to make sure that they fulfil the building regulations. Traditional measurements give no information about the contribution of the surrounding walls to the sound transmission.

This paper describes a method of measuring flanking transmission. The acceleration levels on the receiving parts in the apartment below the source are studied. Thereby the contribution to the sound pressure in the room from each flanking part can be distinguished.

Structural-acoustic analysis of wall-to-floor joints in timber-framed housing2009Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Even though a building meets the regulations with respect to impact sound, structures with wooden frames may receive complaints from the inhabitants due to structure-borne sound in the lower frequencies. In this thesis measuring methods that are more precise than the traditional measuring methods have been used to see if they could give a better knowledge about flanking transmission in the low frequencies in timber-framed structures. The measuring results have been compared to FE models of a complete room. By comparing the non-traditional measurement results with the results from the FE model a straight forward comparison could be made.

Two field measurements have been made within the scope of this thesis. In the first field measurement a two-storey house with four apartments was studied. A traditional tapping machine was used as a source, and an accelerometer measured the responses in the apartment below. This study showed differences in acceleration levels on the surrounding surfaces in the room below the source. The non-bearing apartment-separating wall was the surface that had the largest acceleration levels. In the second field measurement several accelerometers were used simultaneously to measure the responses. With the help of experimental modal analysis and by measuring at several points at the same time the operational deflection shapes of all surrounding surfaces in the reception room could be captured. In this measurement a shaker was used as a source, so that the applied load could be measured the whole time. The load had constant level containing all frequencies within the studied frequency range. Simultaneously, a microphone was used and the acceleration levels in the surrounding surfaces could be compared to the sound pressure in the room. The measurements showed, not surprisingly, that at the frequency where the largest sound pressure was found all surrounding surfaces had acceleration peaks.

An FE analysis of the room from the second field measurement has been made. The analysis shows that by using a load similar to the load used in the experiments the velocity level of the responses are in the same range both in the analysis and in the experiments. It also shows that damping has a large influence and that the damping needs to be studied further to be able to use the model as a prediction tool for flanking transmission.

However, even though the results from the measurements and the analysis have some deviations, a great deal can be learned about the phenomenon of flanking transmission of timber-framed structures by using the proposed methods.

    Abstract [en]

Playsam in Kalmar AB are world famous for their design of the toys they sell. Together with their CEO Carl Zedig the goal was to find a new product for the company.  The process has far from been linear, I started off in one direction, got rejected, turned another way and we finally decided to create a rocking horse in a De Stijl style. At the same time taking consideration of the demands from Playsam and myself.Playsam’s products are archetypes of ordinary objects around us such as the car or the aeroplane. The company mainly produces its toys in wood and the stylized shape together with the blank painted surface has become a hallmark for them.De Stijl, the Dutch art movement containing artists, designers and architects such as Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld. Given inspiration for the rocking horse was Rietveld’s chair Red-Blue.I, Niklas Bonnevier, have a technical background and I am shaped by that. I rather draw with a ruler than by free hand, I often think mathematically instead of in free shapes. In my projects I often work with humour and playfulness, but with great seriousity as a base. The challenge in the project was to take in consideration the factors that would affect the shape and make decisions of what was the most essential to reach the goal. Compromises had to be done since all factors could not get the space they demanded. To renounce the thoughts of Rietveld in the making of the chair Red-Blue hurt in the designer soul but the main thing is that the product works for what it is meant to. Playsam also have to be allowed to say theirs if the result is supposed to be a commercial product in their range of products.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When a new building is constructed, or some changes are taking place in the already existing building, it is required according to PBL  chapter 8 that the developer applies for planning permissions at the building committee in that municipality where the real estate is located. In the planning permission, the documents of the current building are examined.

The developer will appoint a quality manager that helps the developer to ensure that all necessary controls are done and that the requirements in these are met. The developer has the final responsibility to ensure that the building is built according to all requirements and rules. The building committee establishes a control plan that shows which controls have to be carried out and which certificates and documents have to be sent in during the time of the construction.

This study aims to finding out which documents that will be submitted at the construction of a new building, according to the laws found in PBL, if these documents are required and if they are examined of the municipalities before the building is approved.

Lean Tools for Reducing Production Time and Satisfying Employees: A Case Study2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to reduce the production time while providing employees satisfaction and the problem formulation for thesis is;

-How can a company use its work area effectively in order to reduce production time while providing

    employee satisfaction?

To answer problem formulation, proper lean tools were applied. Before implementing lean tools, the study started with a questionnaire to evaluate the effect of work area on employees. Five steps of 5S were implemented on work area so as to provide an organized work area for employee satisfaction in accordance with the theory. SMED’s four stage methodology was applied to the machine in the work area where was focused by the authors in order to reduce the production time. The study was made in a Swedish Company called Swepart Transmission AB. which produces gearboxes, bearings etc. Results obtained from the study shows that employees are under effect of work area and employees were satisfied after 5S implementation, also production time will be reduced at least one hour in the length of time. This thesis can be generalised to all manufacturing companies thus both employee satisfaction and production time reduction can be provided and companies can work more effectively which enables them to become competitiveness in order to survive in market.

Bio-Propane from glycerol for biogas addition2008Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this report, the technical and economical feasibility to produce higher alkanes from bioglycerol has been investigated. The main purpose of producing this kind of chemicals would be to replace the fossil LPG used in upgraded biogas production. When producing biogas and exporting it to the natural gas grid, the Wobbe index and heating value does not match the existing natural gas. Therefore, the upgraded biogas that is put into the natural gas grid in Sweden today contains 8-10 vol-% of LPG. The experimental work performed in association to this report has shown that it is possible to produce propane from glycerol. However, the production of ethane from glycerol may be even more advantageous. The experimental work has included developing and testing catalysts for several intermediate reactions. The work was performed using different micro-scale reactors with a liquid feed rate of 18 g/h. The first reaction, independent on if propane or ethane is to be produced, is dehydration of glycerol to acrolein. This was showed during 60 h on an acidic catalyst with a yield of 90%. The production of propanol, the second intermediate to producing propane, was shown as well. Propanol was produced both using acrolein as the starting material as well as glycerol (combining the first and second step) with yields of 70-80% in the first case and 65-70% in the second case. The propanol produced was investigated for its dehydration to propene, witha yield of 70-75%. By using a proprietary, purposely developed catalyst the propene was hydrogenated to propane, with a yield of 85% from propanol. The formation of propane from glycerol was finally investigated, with an overall yield of 55%.

The second part of the experimental work performed investigated the possibilities of decarbonylating acrolein to form ethane. This was made possible by the development of a proprietary catalyst which combines decarbonylation and water-gas shift functionality. By combining these two functionalities, no hydrogen have to be externally produced which is the case of the propane produced. The production of ethane from acrolein was shown with a yield of 75%, while starting from glycerol yielded 65-70% ethane using the purposely developed catalyst. However, in light of this there are still work to be performed with optimizing catalyst compositions and process conditions to further improve the process yield. The economic feasibility and the glycerol supply side of the proposed process have been investigated as well within the scope of the report. After an initial overview of the glycerol supply, it is apparent that at least the addition of alkanes to biogas can be saturated by glycerol for the Swedish market situation at the moment and for a foreseeable future. The current domestic glycerol production would sustain the upgraded biogas industry for quite some time, if necessary. However, from a cost standpoint a lower grade glycerol should perhaps be considered.

The technical feasibility of biomass gasification for hydrogen production2005Inngår i: Catalysis Today, ISSN 0920-5861, E-ISSN 1873-4308, Vol. 106, nr 1-4, s. 297-300Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Biomass gasification for energy or hydrogen production is a field in continuous evolution, due to the fact that biomass is a renewable and CO2 neutral source. The ability to produce biomass-derived vehicle fuel on a large scale will help to reduce greenhouse gas and pollution, increase the security of European energy supplies, and enhance the use of renewable energy. The Värnamo Biomass Gassification Centre in Sweden is a unique plant and an important site for the development of innovative technologies for biomass transformation. At the moment, the Värnamo plant is the heart of the CHRISGAS European project, that aims to convert the produced gas for further upgrading to liquid fuels as dimethyl ether (DME), methanol or Fischer–Tropsch (F–T) derived diesel. The present work is an attempt to highlight the conditions for the reforming unit and the problems related to working with streams having high contents of sulphur and alkali metals.

Passivhusen på Oxtorget2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Potassium sulfate droplets and the origin of turbidity in alabaster glass2006Inngår i: Glass Technology : European Journal of Glass Science and Technology A, Vol. 47, nr 1, s. 15-18Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A study of the criteria required to manufacture multi-component semi-transparent silicate glasses, so called “alabaster” glass, has found that the optical effect is caused by non-crystal¬line potassium sulfate droplets. The droplets were characterized by use of XRD, SEM/EDX and Raman spectroscopy. The size range of the particles is in the order of 5-50 micrometers. It was found that the droplets consisted of potassium sulfate, even if other sulfate compounds were added to the glass. The amount of sulfate compound added, the melting temperature of the furnace and the melting time have significant effect on the optical density of the glass. The optical density of the glass can be correlated to the calculated surface tension of the host glass, suggesting that phase separation of a sulfate enriched liquid phase is part of the mecha¬nism forming the droplets. By adding pigments several different colours can be obtained, but the alabaster effect is not achieved during reducing conditions, thus it seems not possible to produce colours originating from reduced pigments. Pigments tested were Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Au, Mo/Se, Nd and Ti/Ce/Se.

    Abstract [en]

The interaction between selenium and molybdenum in reduced alkali silicate melts, resulting in red glasses has been studied. The oxidation state of Mo is Mo(VI) as evidenced by XANES and ESCA results. Selenium is present in a reduced state, as inicated by ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and XANES. The colour is described by ultraviolet/visible spectra and CIE colour coordinates. The main absorption peaks are at 450 and 540 nm. Similar bands are reported for MoOSe3 2-. Several commonly used glass components must be avoided in the batch, as they prevent formation of the red colour.

Colour development in copper ruby alkali silicate glasses: Part 2. The effect of tin (II) oxide and antimony (III) oxide2007Inngår i: Glass Technology, Eur J Glass Sci Technol A, Vol. 48, nr 3, s. 142-148Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The effect of Sb3+ and Sn2+ during the heat treatment of copper ruby alkali silicate glasses is investigated. The reducing power of SnO and Sb2O3 with respect to Cu is investigated and it is concluded that SnO has the strongest reducing capability. When Cu2O and SnO concentrations are low, minor additions of Sb2O3 have an observable impact on colour development and and absorbance, as thin pieces of glass develop a bluish tint and larger shift towards longer wavelengths is observed in UV/vis spectra. The differences in colour and spectra are suggested to be caused by differences in size of the colour agent, Cu metal particles.

    Abstract [en]

The development of the red colour in copper ruby alkali silicate glasses has been studied by means of ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy, TEM and EXAFS. The results show that in both red and slightly overstruck, brownish glasses the colour is due to clusters of metallic copper. Before striking non-coloured glasses contain mainly cuprous ions, Cu+. Tin acts as a reducing agent but also has an accelerating effect on colour development.

A model for effective development of plant layouts and material handling systems: En modell för effektiv utformning av fabrikslayouter och materialhanteringssystem2006Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis was a model developed, in order to improve deficiencies in existing literature regarding the layout problem and to give companies a comprehensible user-friendly procedure on how to design competitive production processes, plant layouts and material handling systems. The model consists of six phases that can be used sequentially in order to design, evaluate, implement and maintain effective plant layouts and material handling systems. The model can also be used to examine and optimize processes. The first four phases of the model were tested successfully in a case study at Holtab AB, a medium sized manufacturing company in Tingsryd.

ICT tools for e-maintenance2008Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have made an impact on various parts of a company. The need of many companies of integrating the wealth of information and processes for profitable business has been highlighted since the middle of the 1980s. Further, the commercialization of the Internet began during the middle of the 1990s. The combinations of these developments and the positive impact of ICTs on maintenance and thereby on productivity have been, lately, realized by academia and industry alike, and a new concept, e-maintenance, has been coined.

The main problem of the present work was "How ICT can be used for integrating various data and information to provide better decision support and improve productivity". The main problem addressed was divided into three sub research questions. (1) Which approach should be considered to develop e-maintenance systems? (2) How can web and agent technologies be used in e-maintenance? (3) Which ICT architecture and ICT tools should be used to enhance productivity in the organization/maintenance department and the decision-making process? The research process in this study was based on design science, .i.e. constructive research approach. However, during the first phases of the study has empirical studies been conducted to get an overall understanding of the domain of study.

The present study first presents the state of the art. It was found that in many research projects the application of ICTs to condition-based maintenance (CBM) has been part of the whole work. Since CBM is the most desirable maintenance strategy it needs more focused attention. However,it was found that limited consistent and systematic efforts have been made, in an isolated manner,in industry and academia. A few researchers are using mobile devices, especially personal digital assistants (PDA) with embedded technology and even fewer with web technology.

The study continues by presenting e-maintenance solutions. It goes through the modelling phase in the development of a system and suggests an ontology approach. Further, the use of web and agent technologies on a conceptual level was studied and an architecture was proposed for the same purpose, i.e. e-maintenance. Finally, a prototype was developed with the use of the ICTs tools and an architecture was proposed, Web and mobile architecture. It is an n-tier architecture, where the main client was a mobile device, i.e. PDA. The developed system with the use of various ICTs, viz. web technology, mobile device and wireless communication is believed to make maintenance personnel more productive and help to achieve better decisions.

    Abstract [en]

The paper presents a review of literature on application of information and communication technologies, specifically, Web and Agent Technologies in condition monitoring and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems. In manufacturing and process plants, rarity of experts does not allow condition monitoring to realise its full potential. This led to the application of artificial intelligence and distributed artificial intelligence to condition monitoring. More recently web technology and intelligent agents have emerged as better decision support tools. Reviewed papers show that these technologies have been used in manufacturing and other sectors for integration, remote monitoring and maintenance, diagnosis and prognosis purposes.
