    Abstract [en]

Income support is granted to those who are not by themselves or in any other way able toachieve a decent standard of living. Assessment of entitlement to income support is based onan individual evaluation and equal treatment (Kjellbom, 2009). Administrators of economicaid should therefore not judge clients differently depending on, for example, gender. The aimof this study was to commence from a gender perspective in understanding howadministrators of economic aid think of equality and inequality between the sexes whenheterosexual couples apply for income support. Based on this objective we arrived at twomain formulations of questions; how administrators of economic aid deliberate aroundequality and inequality between sexes in connection to applications for financial support, aswell as which variables in organisations sustain or discourage inequalities between genders inaid management. Previous research demonstrates that gender inequalities have been sustainedwithin organisations and that has been the basis for our study. The method used is qualitativeinterviews. The study's result is based on eight interviews with administrators at centres foreconomic aid at two medium-sized municipalities in Sweden. Our theoretical starting positionhas been power relations and gender perspective. Our result demonstrates that theadministrators’ perception of a lack of guidelines regarding the pay-out of income supportcontributes to retaining power relations between genders when heterosexual couples apply forincome support.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate factors that ex-criminals believe have been of importance to them when they decided to leave a lifestyle of criminality behind. The study was based on eight semi-structured interviews with informants who had committed various forms of crime. Common to all informants is that they are now members in the Swedish association KRIS (In English: CRIS, Criminals Return Into Society), living a life without crime. The stories of the informants have been analyzed on the theoretical basis of social ties, the exit process, role loss, motivation and the life course perspective. Our study showed that the informants have been affected and motivated by various life events that could be identified and pin-pointed during the interviews. Specifically, it could be events directly related to their destructive lifestyle, such as serious threats, violence or the risk of getting kicked out from home and repelled from family. Furthermore, it could also be the opposite, such as a positive event in having a baby and becoming a parent. When analyzing the collected material, the road from being criminal to non-criminal showed to be long and difficult. The old lifestyle is often strongly entrenched in the mind and it takes a lot of effort (i.e motivation), both in leaving the old habits but also in finding a new way of living. Previous research suggests that people making a lifestyle change, of any kind, generally go through similar patterns. This is supported by our study, through the interviews we saw that informants followed a common pattern in how the lifestyle change progressed, regardless of their history and reasons of making a change towards a better life.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine what workers in social services considers physical child abuse and in which way social services work with children who have been exposed to physical child abuse. The study also examines which interventions are available and how physically abused children assimilate these. I've interviewed four child-welfare officers and for those interviews I've used the qualitative semi-structured method. The results shows that all my respondents have different views on on the definition of physical child abuse. The result also shows that the municipality which the children belongs to plays a major role in which children can get help with their problems. Noticeably, it is also a fact that the children have a big responsibility to express in which way they have been beaten and by. The result shows that the children’s expressions can either help or disfavor them in how they will receive assistance from social services. An issue among the socialworkers who participated in his study seems to be the discrepancy between practice and theory. My study shows that different views of on the same problems can create uncertainties regarding the means of helping children in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to see how board games and board game clubs can be part of the creation of social meaning for a younger generation, and how board games can be a part of social work. The study is based on interviews with 3 representatives from Sverok, which is the Swedish gaming federation; Gothcon, Sweden's oldest board game convention, and Calmare Spelsällskap (CSS); a board game club in the small town of Kalmar, Sweden. Interviews have also been conducted with four active youths in CSS. These seven interviews are analyzed with theories about Belonging, Social psychology and Civil society

This study shows that board games have a positive effect as a tool to gather people with similar interests. When these people gather in board game clubs they form a kind of belonging that can help with certain issues, such as social problems. The reason why board game clubs are special is because the activity they are a part of is open to everyone, and all kinds of people are welcome and not only the ones who are good at board games. We also reached the conclusion that board games can be a part of social work, both professionally and non-professionally. This is because board games and their clubs is a part of civil society, which is a complement to social work

Brukaren i centrum.: En studie i brukardelaktighet för kognitivt nedsatta människor.2016Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to understand how the staff is working with users with cognitive impairments and how they see at the participation of its users. This can be broken down into two parts, how to reflect on the problem and also how to work actively with it. The reflective part is the opportunities and difficulties the staff will tend to see with participation. The active part is how they are working to develop ways to increase the participation of users with cognitive impairments. Our study is based on qualitative interviews with seven respondents. The theoretical framework we have used for our study is duty ethics and utilitarian ethics. The result indicates that a measure of non-participation is accepted within supportive activities for people with cognitive impairments based on their level of function. We conclude that professionals working with cognitively impaired users make a decision to limit unhealthy and destructive behaviors with the reason that it is for the best long term effect for the user’s quality of life.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study highlights the fact that sexual abuse is considered a social problem. However, few are disclosing their experiences of sexual abuse during childhood, and although children tell, it is difficult to regard them as credible victims. Our aim with this study is to gain an understanding through adults stories about the sexual abuse they were exposed to during their childhood. In order to achieve this purpose, we have analyzed autobiographies written by adults, who during their childhood have become sexually exposed. The study resulted in the problem of considering children as victims, before the abuse's disclosure but also after. The children were seen, in the cases studied, not as credible due to the perpetrator's identity. This study also found that the children did not report their experiences of sexual abuse due to factors such as shame and normalization. The study thus found that sexual abuse against children is complex and so is the view of the children as victims and their silence.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to understand how unit managers within communal home care service for older people, convert political policy and guidelines into practical care, and how they within this process govern their personnel. The study was based on a qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach. Former research disclose that the process of converting political policy and guidelines and how unit managers govern personnel are somewhat tenuous. Previous research show structural shifts and reorganisations within public service consequently shaping todays structure of organizations and management. The study draws on eight interviews with unit managers within two municipalities in Sweden. To carry out our interviews we used a semi-structured interview guide followed with an analysis of our main results using Lipskys concept of discretion and Foucaults theory of governmentality. The results indicate that unit managers’ work, converting political policy and guidelines into practical care, are complex. The study shows that unit managers experience difficulties and differ in their ways in the process of adapting political policy and guidelines into practical care. Unit managers therefor find some of the guidelines more difficult to integrate than others. We find it important in this study to highlight the different ways unit managers work in the process of converting political policy and guidelines, and how they in the process govern their personnel.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how social workers on a Chief Guardian unit work from their conditions when recruiting guardians. More specifically, we wanted to see how the law, the practise and the professionals’ tacit knowledge affect their judgement of guardians and how the organisation and the government of the Chief Guardian unit affect their work. The Chief Guardian unit is a municipal supervisor that control and supervise the work of the guardian. Media has criticized the Chief Guardian unit, by highlighting examples of unfit guardians. The Swedish National Audit Office (Riksrevisionen) has expressed a number of shortcomings of the supervision by the County administrative boards of Sweden (Länsstyrelsen). Because the Chief Guardian units lack a common governmental monitoring, internal solutions are created by every individual unit. In this qualitative study we have tried to understand how the social workers practise their profession. Through semi-structured interviews with eight social workers in three different Chief Guardian units, we have interpreted the views of their work. The theoretical framework was primarily founded on Polanyi´s theory of tacit knowledge and the ideas of occupational and organizational professionalism. The results of our study showed that the reality for the social workers is a mix of occupational and organizational professionalism. All the informants describe their work as heavily controlled by laws and regulations, but with a certain freedom of how to conduct their work. They find the tacit knowledge and the collegial support very important when it comes to assessing guardians. All the informants state that an organizational change is crucial to guarantee the legal security of guardians and caretakers.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Access to higher education is an issue of human rights, since higher education often is a pre-requisite for obtaining paid work for persons with disabilities. This study examines higher education and accommodations aimed at promoting an accessible education from the view of students with disabilities, arising out of a comparative analysis of interviews with students in Sweden, The Czech Republic and the US. The aim of the study was to explore students´ perspectives on their participation in higher education, the supporting system and the meaning of the concept of an accessible education. The study was conducted at two universities in Sweden and the CzechRepublic and one university in the USA. Overall 48 students were interviewed about their experiences. Interviews were also conducted with six coordinators at the five universities. Major differences appeared in the organization of and eligibility for support in the different countries. One example is to what extent support relies on individualized accommodations or on general accessibility.  Although differences are obvious in policy as well as practice, the findings also show that students share some experiences of being in higher education. A shared experience among student is the decisive relationship with the teacher. Teachers are viewed as the core of the academic education which can either take a supportive and facilitating role or preclude all possibilities of an education. Furthermore, the findings indicate a gap between policy and practice that opens for a discussion on the meaning of accessibility in higher education.

The increasing importance of administrative practices in the shaping of of the welfare state2010Ingår i: Social Work & Society, ISSN 1613-8953, E-ISSN 1613-8953, Vol. 8, nr 1, s. 70-81Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we analyse changes in the Swedish welfare state through the example of the municipal social care services for older persons. It is shown that one can trace a transformation to three different processes (layers) of change. When looked upon as complementary phenomena they show why and how administrative practices have become the dominant locus in the re-shaping of the welfare state. The incorporation of managerialism as the prevailing mode for delivering the services and organizing social policy leads to the main conclusion, that we are witnessing the move away from a moral/political to an administrative welfare regime. In the ending paragraph, we argue that this move weakens social citizenship and transfers values and principles in social policy to the administrative sphere. We further argue that this focus has some broader implications in characterizing and analyzing cross-national differences as to welfare regimes.

    Abstract [en]

The focus of this study has been to plumb social workers experiences regarding their work methods in two institutions regarding unaccompanied children through a perspective of gender. In this study, four semi-structured qualitative interviews has been contrived in purpose to gather in material which has been presented in five themes to ease an analyse focusing of gender. In all the interviews both authors participated with one in charge and one taking notes. One of the main focuses has been the relations between both social workers and their clients and between colleges in the institutions. The other main focus has been the activities, both planed and spontaneous, which the clients been offered, for example football, bowling and boxing. The idea of analyse this main focuses is based in our knowledge through recent science studies that shows that gender is created both in relations, language and everyday actions.

    Abstract

Title: Anxiety within the organization - correlation study regarding psychosocial

    work environment factors.

    Author: Nicklas Blomqvist

The purpose of this study was to examine if there are any correlations between anxiety and psychosocial work environment factors according to Curt Andersson’s theory (2007). The last two decades there has been a significant increase in numbers of employees going on sick leave. According to studies the main explanation for the increase was the psychosocial work environment. One important factor observed in the group of long time sick list was that people working in the public service sector was over represented. By using a survey, the author of this paper has tried to find correlations between different work environmental factors that could contribute to experienced stress in the workplace. The author has also tried to find correlations between experienced stress (e.g. anxiety) and organizational questions. In this study stress represents the measure of the variable anxiety. The survey was conducted in three different pre-school units in a small community in the south of Sweden. More than 70 % of the respondents stated that they had felt stressed recently. A correlation analysis between stress and organizational factors showed a (r.39) correlation that was significant at the 0.01 level (1-tailed). However, the main factor to have an impact on stress (i.e. anxiety) according to the author’s findings was the factor designated job demand.

Keywords: Curt Andersson, anxiety, stress, organization, psychosocial workplace environment.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to analyze how the key staff concept is used in residential care for children and young people and which role the key staff concept plays in the organization.

The study was based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with six key staff and two managers from two different residential care facilities for children and young people. The theoretical perspective used was the neo-institutional theory and Hasenfeld´s term Human service organizations.

One of the conclusions of the study was that the key staff describe that they have a central role when it comes to the treatment of the children. Another conclusion showed the variety of tasks that the key staff have, like the administrative work that they do. They also have an educational role, similar to the one that parents normally have which means that they are responsible of parenting the children. They also described themselves as a link between the children and their social network. The people interviewed justified the use of the key staff concept as it gives structure for the work, security to the children and serves as a guide on how to create and maintain relationships. The institutional processes shown in the key staff concept are: the coercive, which can be seen by the obligation to follow the treatment plans. The mimetic, since it exists only a few ways to organize the work and the normative which shows that their education and/or the level of education can affect the approach that they have towards the children.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the dominating discourse in the preliminary work of the Sex Purchase Act. In order to achieve the aim of this study we selected preliminary work of the Sex Purchase Act that was produced between 1977 and 1999. The selection is based on the fact that prostitution began to be recognized as a social problem and a gender equality issue between men and women in society. The ongoing debate during the chosen years resulted in the Sex Purchase Act, which was passed in 1999. By using discourse analysis as a methodological and theoretical approach, we have empirically studied and theoretically analyzed the dominating discourse in the preliminary work of the Sex Purchase Act. This study shows that the dominating discourse in the preliminary work is based on a perception that prostitution reflects violence against women, which prevents women and men from becoming equal in society. The dominating discourse in the preliminary work is characterized by a heteronormative standard and has influences that can be recognized as feminist ideology. The content in the dominating discourse is produced by people with high social status, which gives sex buyers and sex workers limited influence on how their categories are presented in the preliminary work.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to research whether or not gender has an impact on assessments regarding the support for persons with special nedds (LSS personkrets 3). Administrators working in disability care are to make decisions on the basis of the individual's needs when assessing the need for aid and support. This study is based on qualitative interviews, with six administrators, and one head of operations. The empirical data collected has been thoroughly analysed from a gender perspective, rooted in Butler's theory regarding performativity and subversive actions, as well as Connell's gender regime, and Hirdman's gender contracts. Results show that administrators have ackknowledged and noticed differences in how male and female users express their needs, where the difference lies in the communication; females seem more reserved and shy, whereas males seem more outward and extroverted. The interviews indicate that administrators from chosen municipalities have a poor gender awareness, and seem not to apply gender perspectives in their work.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a case study that examines what political decisions have been taken and how these policies have been implemented. Further this thesis discusses how legitimacy of local policy makers and implementors is affected. The subject studied have been the social service of Jönköping municipality and the intervention of safe-housing aimed at women who have been, or are subject to violence by person close to them. In our study we have examined local policy within the territory of the intervention and how this policy is implemented. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews was used in combination with quantitative methods to examine protocols from the social welfare board and an action program named "Skydd och stöd för misshandlade kvinnor och deras barn” [Protection and support for abused women and their children].

The purpose of this study has been to highlight how the social services implemented the local policy of safe-house accommodation in Jönköping municipality from the legitimacy and discretion perspectives. Theoretical concepts used in the study is legitimacy, discretion and implementation. To analyze our data we use the street-level bureaucracy theory (Lipsky 1980). Our survey showed that the intervention safe-house accommodation was not mainly governed by local policy, instead, it was directed by street-level bureaucracy.

    Abstract

This is a qualitative study of elderly people's experiences of loneliness and quality of life. Also the relationship between loneliness and quality of life are examined. Previous research has shown that social loneliness is about when the social context are lost while emotional loneliness can occur with the loss of close relationships. Quality of life is about a sense of connection but also the quality of life arises in the difference between the expectation of what one is and what one wishes to have. This study has shown that the interviewees preferences, activities, social networks and low expectations on their life situation makes interviewees perceive themselves to be less lonely and have a good quality of life. This is consistent with previous research as Antonovsky's (1987/2005) sense of coherence, Hagberg's (2002) commitment and Nordenfelt´s (1991) discrepancy in what you have and what you wish to have. The interviewees in this study seems to have found a balance in what the aforementioned scientists believe must be to achieve a sense of quality of life. The respondents also said that they do not feel alone over short periods, suggesting that respondents found strategies that counteract loneliness. Loneliness and quality of life was found to be related to each other, the interviewees felt that loneliness was worthwhile and gave quality of life. Loneliness was also something that could affect the quality of life.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to understand how social workers experienced working with Addiction Severity Index (ASI) in relation to the goal set by the National Board of Health and Welfare. The method is spread nationwide and therefore it is of great importance to examine how the social workers themselves experience the demands and the resources surrounding ASI. We choose to do a qualitative study interviewing eight social workers at six different occasions. The result was analyzed using Max Weber’s ideal type bureaucracy and Michael Lipsky’s thesis on street-level bureaucrats. We found that the social workers consider the method useful when used from without their own purposes. The standards set by the National Board of Health and Welfare was considered hard to achieve because of the complexity of the method. Among other things the valuation done by both social worker and client was regarded as tough and therefore the results of the interview are at risk of not becoming reliable. We found that the outcome of the interview depends on the performer.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim with our study has been to examine how preschool-staffs resonate about the notification requirements according to Chapter 14, section 1, The Social Services Act, when a child fare badly or is suspected to fare badly: first, in relation to the municipality´s policies, but also in relation to the preschool staff´s actions in individual cases. Our study was conducted by qualitative research with semi-structured interviews. Total has two child´s nurses and six preschool-teachers, active within Växjö´s municipality, been interviewed. The result showed that the municipality´s guidelines on the one hand, underpinned by giving a prescribed pattern of behavior for preschool staff on how to act if the suspected that a child to fare badly. On the other hand preschool staff also experienced the guidelines diffuse as there were nothing described of the transition of how much they should document and observe before a notification could be initiated to the headmaster. Noteworthy was that the munici-pality´s guidelines in this case was inconsistent with the provision in Chapter 14, section 1, The Social Service act. A report should be made immediately. In addition, the preschool-staff could not establish a notification, just initiate it to the headmaster, which is also contrary to the statutory provisions. Furthermore the result showed that the preschool-staff experienced more disadvantages than advantages with the duty to report. The results also showed that the preschool staff´s actions were influenced off various circumstances. The behavior before initiating a notification to the headmaster showed to differ in individual cases. This confirms the preschool-staffs personal discretion even though the duty to report prevails.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study examines how two groups of social workers at two workplaces reflect to their own clothes in various work situations. We want to gain an understanding of the variables that affects social workers choice of clothes at work. In a qualitative approach the study is based on two focus group-interviews and four semi structured interviews. Empirically analyzes relate to Pierre Bourdieu’s "la distinction, Ervin Goffman’s "frontstage-backstage", and of Michele Foucault’s power concepts. The result indicates that the participants had similar views concerning the meaning and impact of clothes in work contexts, especially when consulting clients. Their clothes seem to emphasis their power positions related to the client, but the clothing might also contribute to losses of credibility’s in the profession. To avoid the interference of their clothing in meetings with clients, the participant’s dresses in clothes that avoid power symbols or lack but emphasize professionalism. The participants try to choose their clothes with regards to a client perspective, and are striving to meet clients with respect and professionalism.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how home care professionals construct older immigrants. The study was conducted by a social constructional perspective. The study consists of focus group interviews with three different home care groups. The data was analysed by using the theoretical concepts Categorizing and Making of the Others. The results of this study shows that the home care professionals are categorizing older immigrants as different from older Swedes, and therefore making older immigrants as the others. Besides mentioned social construction of older immigrants, we found that there were contradictions when the home care professionals made a reasoning that did not make older immigrants as the others. In this case they did not find the category older immigrants meaningful and useful, because they expressed that their needs were no different from elderly people in general.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine how social workers, in the Swedish social services, perceive and interpret LVU § 3 from a gender perspective. In total eight social workers participated in the study, attending interviews based on a vignette. From a gender perspective we wanted to found out how the social workers define "other socially destructive behaviour" and understand their thoughts about this subject. Moreover, we aimed to see if social workers perceive any differences between boys and girls behaviour. Based on several theories, two gender theories and concepts we have analysed our result from the interviews. The study has shown that the social workers seems to find "other socially destructive behaviour" in the LVU § 3 difficult to use. Through the result from the vignette, it has also shown that the social workers seemed to perceive more risks for girls to be sexually abused than boys in the same situation. The fear they see with boys in the same situation is that they will start using drugs.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this case study was to examine consequences of a limited social citizenship among young adults in the refugee camp of DeHeishe in Palestine. In order to receive a profounder understanding of conditions and structures that affects young adult’s experiences of social citizenship, status in the community and practices a case study was carried out during April 2013.

The data has been collected by triangulation, conducted through nine interviews, 52 survey forms and several observations in DeHeishe camp. The data was analyzed through the theoretical approach of social citizenship, intersectionality and the concept of “empower-ment”. The study shows that young adults have a fragmented view of the concept of social citizenship and differences were seen between women and men. According to status and practice in relation to social citizenship women and men’s attitude was various and limiting structures might be the cause of it. According to the young adults the Israeli occupation is the most limiting structure along with their specific living conditions. The traditions also were seen as a limiting, but at the same time could be enabling. For this reason, the consequences were that the young adults took matters into their own hands by empowerment through NGOs and create an alternative form of social citizenship. It is through knowledge and participation they experience they can change their situation.

Kommunikation online: En fallstudie av Korrespondensgymnasiets elevkurativa arbete2015Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study was to examine how social work can be performed online, by a case study of Korrespondensgymnasiet that pursues distance education. The intention was to determine the possibilities and limits with the online communication between the school counsellor and the pupils. The study was based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with one school counsellor and five pupils and document analysis of three descriptions of the school counsellor’s profession. The theory that has been used in this study is the communication theory: Shannon and Weaver’s Model of Communication and non-verbal communication. An essential discovery is that alternative ways to communicate can maintain an option to traditional communication face to face. This is mainly because the pupils find it more important to have the possibility to make contact with the school counsellor, rather than how the communication is being performed. We also discovered that the descriptions of the school counsellor’s profession doesn’t stand in the way of having online communication with the pupils.

    Abstract [en]

Swedish authorities have the responsibility to protect children from bad caring. In the Swedish welfare system it is possible to take a child out of its original home when there is a suspicion about a child being maltreated. The Swedish law regarding The Compulsory Care of Young Persons Act, LVU, legalize this intervention. When using this intervention, the parents of the child are not seen as giving the child a ”good enough” care. The expression ”good enough”, or ”tillräcklig föräldraförmåga” is well known and used throughout the social care system, even though there is no actual definition of what ”good enough”-parenting entails. Instead it is up to the social worker who is in charge of the investigation of a child’s wellbeing to make the decision if the”good enough”-parenting exist in every individually case. In this study ten court orders have been viewed with the purpose of finding, and examine, a discourse of ”good enough”-parenting. In these specific court cases the parents have requested to be reunited with their children who have previously been removed from their home under the law). In search of this discourse, we found that the complexity of finding a definition of what is seen as ”good enough”, are harder than we expected. Even though the authorities in Sweden have the same law to build upon, the result of the ten court orders shows that the investigators have a big capacity to self-interpret what is ”good enough”. The outcome of the investigations that eventually end up in court have all distinguished a different definition of what is ”good enough”. This results in different kinds of determinations for something that is supposed to be interpreted in a similar way to preserve the rule of law.

    Keywords

”Good enough”-parenting, ”good enough”,  The Compulsory Care of Young Persons Act (LVU), decision making process, interpretative prerogative.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

This chapter addresses the legitimacy of public authorities to interfere in parenting when migrant parents are framed as a target group. The empirical data consist of three parenting programs developed and implemented in Norway and Sweden, specially designed to address migrant parents. The text analysis departs from three questions: Why migrant families are targeted? What kind of transition the programs promote? How are these transitions expected to be achieved? Based on the results from the text analysis we discuss how authorities guide but also govern through these programs. The defining of the target group and their needs, as well as addressing the parents can be understood as epistemic governance, a governance aimed for affecting other’s views of reality, their conceptions, aspirations, motivations and in the end practices. A conclusion is that the friendly bridging and mutual approaches used by the three parenting programs are elusive. The possible problem of oppression and racialisation is immanent in the programs and embedded in a theoretical framework about modernity that supports taken for granted standpoints about cultural differences (as better or worse). This makes it difficult for the participating parents to discuss on what premises they are selected as a target group.

    Abstract [en]

We have in this field study been researching how social comfort is affected by the work of social services and their collaboration with police, schools and health care within a small village located countryside in the northern part of Sweden. The attribute which sets this village a part from most other small countryside villages is the fact that the crime rate is amongst the lowest in Sweden as well as the social security feeling within the inhabitants are amongst the highest. We traveled 2298 kilometers back and forth to be able to interview professionals and gather empiric material for this study. The method we have used for data collection has been in the form of semi structured interviews. We have used previous research concerning collaboration, social comfort, social discomfort and fear of crime as our aid to analyze our findings with the help of theories regarding different types of communites (gemeinschaft and gesellschaft) invented by Ferdinand Tönnies (2001) and Human Service Organisation by Hasenfeld (1983). We have analyzed our findings with the help of a qualitative content analysis. The result showed that the collaboration between the different authorities was a key point in preserving the social comfort feeling within the community and the idea of gemeinschaft also affects the outcome in various ways. The study will provide insight in understanding how collaboration can be represented in multi professional practices in the work for social comfort for the inhabitants as well as spreading knowledge regarding positive and negative effects concerning multi professional collaboration. Abstract

Title: Is the grass greener on the other side of the world?

Accommodation – A study about how representatives of social work in Colorado view the legalization of marijuana.

Authors: Rina Bacaj & Nina Buquku

    Supervisor: Peter Hultgren

    Assessor: Anette Lundin

The purpose of the study was to investigate how representatives of social work in Colorado, based on their professional roles, view the recreational use of marijuana after the legalization took place in the state.

    The questions in focus were:

What opinions and views are expressed by representatives of social work in Colorado, about the legalization from a professional perspective?

What do social workers base their arguments on, regarding the legalization?

This thesis is based on structured email interviews, with eight representatives of social work in Colorado. We have analyzed the results by using Brante’s and Svensson’s theoretical concepts about profession and legitimacy. These theoretical concepts have been used to analyze and find out what the representatives base their arguments on. The results and analysis indicate that representatives of social work have a positive attitude towards the legalization of recreational marijuana. One of the disadvantages that is highlighted is the consumption of marijuana among children and adolescents. While one of the benefits with marijuana is the tax revenues contributed by marijuana retail stores in Colorado. The representatives base their opinions and arguments on education, experiences and research. What is evident, however, is that their professions are dependent and influenced by norms which ultimately are also decisive for what becomes acceptable in a society.

The concept of home - unaccompanied youths voices and experiences2020Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, unaccompanied youths are placed within residential care units. However, to settle in a foreign country and feel emotional belonging is more complex than access to a physical building. The aim of this study is to critically discuss the concept of 'home' as experienced by the youths, narrated in nine focus group interviews. These interviews occurred in the aftermath of a turbulent migration time (2015), when over 35,000 unaccompanied youths arrived in Sweden. A transnational theoretical perspective stretches the meaning across national borders, when home links to people, processes and other geographical places. It is difficult to create an environment that mirrors the emotional attachment described in analysis. Earlier research has shown that residential care workers refer to the institutional setting as home, yet the results of this study show that the young people relate to the concept differently. Staff utilisation of the concept of home rather emphasises the lack of home-like aspects for the youths, creating a frustration in the current institutional conditions. Staff in residential care units must therefore be aware of the different interpretations and reactions that their actions and communications generate, in order to respond to various needs.

Abstract Author: Jehona Ziba and Qendresa Cani Title: Relatives who have developed a co-dependency This study is generally about support for relatives of people with alcohol addiction problems who have developed a co-dependency. More specifically, the study deals with the social worker's approach to this target group, the way in which they identify their co-dependency problems and their experience of working with it. Previous research points out the negative consequences of being a relative of an addict and believes it is important to help these people. However, there are various circumstances such as feelings of guilt and shame that prevent relatives from seeking help for social services. This study is qualitative, where the collection of the empirical material consists of six semistructured interviews. What we have come up with in the study of this study is that relatives who have developed a co-dependency are a stigmatized group trying to hide their situation from others. This, in turn, can lead to difficulties for social workers in discovering these problems to help them in good time. In addition, the study reveals that even though permanent co-dependency has not been diagnosed, social workers classify relatives who have developed codependents as a disease condition. But that in the work efforts there are no special initiatives that would distinguish co-dependency problems based on family problems.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to explore how employment agencies perceive their role and their work with the target group of young people between the age 18 to 25, who lack complete final grades from high school. The study answers four questions:

    • How does employment agencies experience that existing interventions for this targetgroup work?
    • How does employment agencies experience the work with matching the target group to the jobs?
    • How does employment agencies perceive and relate in relation to the management of rules?
    • Does the employment agencies experience space to work individually based?

The method used to gather empirical data for this study has been qualitative interviews.

To analyse the empirical data the street-level bureaucracy theory has been implemented. The result of this study indicates that the role of employment agencies is not entirely simple, due to the dual role they have to relate to. They must act as ruling bureaucrats and simultaneously show compassion and flexibility in the work with their clients. This makes the already challenging work of getting adolescents, without a final grades from high school, to work, even more complex.

    Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how the authorities in Sweden collaborate when it comes to discourage trafficking for sexual purposes. More specifically the aim was to find which directives and problems the work of the individual authorities constitute in and how does it affect collaboration with other authorities. The study was based on interviews with six respondents, which have experience working within this field. Three themes were identified: what is collaboration, different perspectives, regulatory frameworks and different fundamental values within the organisations. The study concluded that collaboration is affected by several factors such as the absence of knowledge about trafficking for sexual purposes and the laws which regulate confidentiality, difficulties in defining collaboration as a concept and the authorities different ideas about what have to be done in the context of discouraging trafficking for sexual purposes. The authorities define the problematic aspects with trafficking in similar ways. Differences can be seen when it comes to define trafficking for sexual purposes as such. The analysis was based on two different perspectives: social constructive theory and new institutionalism in organizational analysis.

A Narrative Review of Qualitative and Quantitative Research in Equine-assisted Social Work or Therapy – Addressing Gaps and Contradictory Results2016Ingår i: Animalia An Anthrozoology Journal, nr February 14Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article reviews the published literature narrative about equine-assisted or equine-facilitated social work or therapy, a growing area of interventions. The purpose is to shed light on gaps and contradictory results in previous studies between 2000-2014. The goal is to assist practitioners and researchers, identifying and providing perspectives on complicated issues when results of interventions are pointing in different directions. In total, 55 published articles and 15 dissertations were analyzed thematically. Excluded are studies focused on therapeutic riding for the physically disabled or hippotherapy benefiting from equine movement, as well as studies focused on individuals’ riding goals or horsemanship skills. The implications for further research address gaps in the literature on the process in equine assisted or facilitated work. The process need to be described from professional affiliation, the purpose of the intervention, theoretical perspective, the intended role of the horse, ethical approach both concerning the client and the horse, plan to prevent risks as well as describe risks in relation to possible outcomes both for the client and the horse and finally a description about how the intervention are evaluated. Standardization of terminology and language used to communicate interventions, methods, and theories is recommended. The analysis suggests a need to use a variety of research methods in interdisciplinary research groups. This allows different paradigms of participatory, as well as constructivism or post-positivism, to capture the complexity of social work or therapy facilitated or assisted by horses. This article does not critically review each specific investigation, but focuses on how the process has been presented in previous research.

Equine-assisted Social Work Counteracts Self- stigmatisation in Self-harming Adolescents and Facilitates a Moment of Silence2018Ingår i: Journal of Social Work Practice, ISSN 0265-0533, E-ISSN 1465-3885, Vol. 32, nr 1, s. 17-30Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to determine whether equine-assisted social work (EASW) could affect self-stigmatisation and thereby counteract false identities in self-harming adolescents. Data were collected via interviews with nine female self-harming clients aged 15–21 years and eight staff members. Interviews and video-recorded human–horse interactions with three staff members and four clients were analysed. The interviews were followed by further dialogue with participants while they viewed videos of their own EASW sessions. The analysis indicated that the horse had a calming effect on the clients; enabled them to free themselves of their preoccupations; provided real-time, non-verbal and non-judgmental feedback on their emotions; and increased feelings of trust, patience and empathy. The presence of a horse provided a ‘moment of silence’ for the clients, silencing their inner critic, and made them feel more authentic and better able to regulate their emotions. However, staff could counteract this ‘safe’ healing by being too focused on goals, making interpretations and lecturing and encouraging clients, thus making clients feel judged anyhow. EASW seemed to give clients the opportunity to break free from self-stigmatisation, which seemed to lower the barrier to change.

Equine-assisted Social Work or Therapy – Addressing Gaps and Contradictory Results2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In reviewing published literature to shed lights on gaps and contradictory results in previous studies between 2000-2014 the goal was to assist practitioners and researches identifying and providing perspectives on complicated issues when results of interventions are pointing in different directions. In total, 55 published articles and 15 dissertations were analyzed thematically. Excluded are studies focused on therapeutic riding for the physically disabled or hippo-therapy benefiting from equine movement, as well as studies focused on individual´s riding goals or horsemanship skills. Empirical research show that adding a horse could qualitatively change the therapeutic relationship providing a moment of silence, meaning silencing the client´s inner critic making them more authentic and able to regulate their emotions. The staff on the other hand could counteract this “safe” healing by being focused on goals, making interpretations and reprimand or encouraging the clients making clients feel judged anyhow. There is a need for the process to be described regarding the professionals affiliation and approach, the theoretical perspective, the purpose of the intervention, the intended role of the horse, ethical approach both concerning the client and the horse, plan to prevent risks as well as describe risk in relation to possible outcomes for the client and the horse. There is a need for understanding horses as sentient beings with needs of their own, not just tools for humans to use. Just giving access to a horse to solve a client´s problem is not a solution. Considerations to differences between individual horses as well as individual staff need to be attended. There is a need for critical reflection about researchers and practitioner´s biases that can make them driven by their own relationship with horses. As an example anthropomorphism has provided the opportunity to use animals as alternative sources of social support and the means to benefit emotionally and physically from this. The effects of anthropomorphism seem to be good for the human but less benign for the horses. Here ethical limits need to be discussed far more than in earlier research when it also could be an aspect of contradictory results. There seem to be a need for using a variety of research methods to capture the complexity. Interdisciplinary research groups could be an answer were measures of heart rates, cortisol levels and brain activity is also included. The analysis suggest allowing different paradigms of participatory as well as constructivism or post-positivism to capture the complexity and the contradictory results of social work or therapy assisted by horses. Collaborative project with practitioners and clients to reach the tacit knowledge using reflection as a tool as well as questioning if this should be regarded as a method of its own or a complement to other methods.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis examines, through qualitative methods, the role of the horse in equine-assisted social work (EASW) as well as what facilitates or constrains the role of the horse. Specifically, should interaction be understood in the same manner regardless of which individuals that participate? The thesis is based on empirical data collected throughinterviews with eight staff members and nine female self-harming clients, aged 15–21 years, in a residential treatment facility. In addition, video recordings of the human-horse interaction of three staff members and four clients were analyzed, resulting in the additional issues addressed in a second interview. Critical dialogues between patterns and fragmentations in the narratives and video-recordings, as well as a dialogue with participants, while they were viewing videos of their own EASW sessions, led to the conclusion that adding a horse could qualitatively change therapeutic relationships.

The results are presented in four articles that provide an image of the complexity of EASW. The summary chapters focus on a synthesized analysis, based on Goffman’sdramaturgical perspective and Hochschild’s emotional rules in which the concepts were applied: backstage, frontstage, impression management, stigma, emotional management, deep acting and surface acting. The analysis demonstrated that defense mechanisms are reduced when the horse is perceived as non-judgmental and therefore less intimidating. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that it is crucial that the horse is regarded as a subject, a transitional object, which can silence the inner critic and create a ‘moment of silence’ that contradicts stigmas and enablesadolescents to regulate their emotions. This leads to possibilities to be more authentic and the relationship between staff and adolescents to be perceived as more authentic.

In summary, the work presented in this thesis contributes to increased knowledge about the role of the horse in opposing impression management and surface acting, depending on the high demands on staff to reach outcomes regarding communication, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-image. The different triads consist of different liaisons, giving rise to unique combinations and the potential to avoid emotional dissonance. The quality of the relationships seems to depend on staff and clients’ attachment orientations.

If Equine Assisted Social Work is the Answer, what is the question?2013Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of this study was by means of qualitative methods to explore the meaning of EASW for young women with self-harm problems in residential treat- ment. Seen from the eyes of the clients and the staff members, what role and meaning is devoted to the hor- se as used in EASW? How does the interaction with the horse contribute to the clients and staff ́s perception of autenticity and the possibilities to be in an authentic relation?

    Definition

EASW represents an alternative or a supplement to conventional treatment and social work, and involves a triangular relationship between staff, client and the horse. The activities in EASW can involve care of the horse, training with the horse, riding, carriage driving and vaulting (gymnastics on horseback). The program will always depend on the staff ’s skills and educational background, the horse ́s abilities as well as the client ́s skills and wishes.

    Method

Data were initially collected by in-depht interviews with 8 staff members and 9 clients. In-depth interviews that lasted between 40- 60 minutes based on 6 - 7 themes were conducted separatly with the clients and the staff mem- bers Observations of the human-horse interaction were videotaped and conducted three times with each pair of staff and client that worked together in EASW. After the observations indepht interviews were conducted with clients and staffmembers in direct conjunction with one of the observations.

    Results

Based on the narratives of the staff members and the clients; it seemed that the horse’s ability to read human emotions made the staff and clients aware of their emotions. In order not to alienate the horse or make the situation dangerous, the clients and staff said that they had to regulate their emotions, which intensified their sense of being in the moment. The participants felt the horse read their intentions, and gave them a direct feedback on their ex- pressed emotions. Furthermore, this feedback was given to them in a way

that did not raise their defence mechanisms. The horse seemed to function as an emotional mirror for the participants. They detected and recognized their own emotions, and subsequently had to regulate them in order to interact with the horse and others in a positive way. Finally the horse seemed to set the framework for the interaction between the staff-members and the young women, which became more informal and dynamic. Stable-based relations- hips experienced as based on trust, respect and negotiation can accordingly be interpreted as being representing as more authentic relationships compared to relationships outside of the stable.

    Implications for clinical work

The clients found it easier to bond with the horse because it was not ha- ving expectations of the clients. The staff members, however, could be expe- rienced as if they had expectations of clients. The client perceives the horse as nojudgemental, honest, reliable, have no prejudices, offer physical contact

and give direct feedback. The stable provided other opportunities for interac- tion than the therapy room, as other rules apply and staff and clients became more equal and perceived their relations as more ”authentic”. The horse was a door opener for the clients to get rid of anxiety and agression resulting in calmness and relaxation. This open up for communication between staff and client, which in turn could increase new insights.

Despite an increasing number of studies, thereis still a lack of knowledge about the unique featuresthat underlie the process in equine assisted social work(EASW). Mentalizing and Emotional Labor Facilitate Equine-Assisted Social Work with Self-harming Adolescents2015Ingår i: Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, ISSN 0738-0151, E-ISSN 1573-2797, Vol. 32, nr 4, s. 329-339Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores equine-assisted social work (EASW). Horses’ capacities to mirror human emotions create possibilities for authentic relationships between clients and staff. This study examines what eases or counteracts the horse’s capacity to facilitate relationships perceived by humans to be authentic. Video recordings of the human-horse interactions of three staff members and four female self-harming clients aged 15–21 years in a residential treatment facility were analyzed. The findings show that if the staff gave instructions and advice similar to traditional equestrian sports in combination with viewing the horse as an object, EASW is not facilitated. EASW seems to be facilitated when the horse is perceived as a subject by both staff and clients, provided that the staff gave meaning to the horse’s behavior. The staff needed to highlight empathy for the horse when the horse is not able to fulfill its task without adding depth to the client’s performance, to avoid raising defense mechanisms. The essence of EASW were perceived as eased by staff members when they focus on the client’s emotions and help the client understand that the horse is acting in response to the client’s and the staff’s behavior through mentalizing and enacting emotional labor in regarding the horse as a subject. The results indicate the need for higher demands on staff members in order to facilitate EASW. Depending on whether the staff and the clients focus on performance or on emotions, different positive or negative outcomes on communication, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-image will be likely to emerge.

The purpose of this study was to explore, by qualitative methods, the meaning of equine-assisted social work (EASW) both to young women with self-harm problems and their staff in residential treatment. Data were collected by in-depth interviews with eight staff members and nine clients. Human-horse interaction was observed subsequently in three of the staff and four of the clients. Based on the narratives of the staff members and the clients, who agreed, the horse’s ability to read human emotions made the staff and clients aware of their own emotions. In order not to alienate the horse or make the situation dangerous, which intensified their sense of being in the present, both the clients and staff had to regulate their emotions. As a result the resistance for change decreased, made the participants more likely to regulate their emotions and change behavior rather than avoid the situation or the information. The horse seemed to set the framework for the interaction between the staff and young women. The fact that even the staff could fail in the interaction with the horse, affected the interaction between staff and clients making it more informal and dynamic. A relationship based on empathy, trust, respect and negotiation, where clients shared private matters, resulted in the perception of a more authentic relationship. Further research is needed to see which conditions are favourable for achieving an authentic relationship and which conditions possibly fail.
