    Abstract [en]

Abstract:Today many adolescents have access to computers and mobile phones.  They prefer to socialize through these means which has led to a new kind of bullying, the electronic bullying. The purpose of this study has been to examine the electronic bullying from the perspective of gender, anonymity and the consequences that it may lead to. We have chosen a quantitative approach by using a questionnaire survey targeting young people between the ages of 15-16 years in Kalmar county. 163 respondents took part in the survey, 78 girls and 85 boys. The gathered material is presented by means of contingency tables and has been interpreted by gender socialization, deindividuation and dehumanization. The results show that 14 % of the respondents have been victims of electronic bullying. The results also show that 15% of the respondents have participated in exposing others to electronic bullying.

Keywords: relationships, attachment, home of treatment for youth, youth, significant others, trust.

In our essay we had an aim to see how Hassela, Gotland affected the youths who lived there. We wanted to know if they had a secure or insecure attachment to their parents and if the attachment was affected after a time at Hassela. We were interested in what kind of attachment figures they had before they came to Hassela, Gotland and how they looked at themselves and others before they came there and if that had been changed.

We used a qualitative method and we did ten interviews with youths who had been at Hassela, Gotland eight months or longer. We based our analysis on the attachment theory. We also used a theory about significant others. All of the youths in our interviews had some kind of insecure attachment to one or both of their parents before they arrived to Hassela, Gotland. Everyone had a problem in trusting grown-ups and forming relationships. A majority of the youths had been changed in some way. After the visit many youths were able to trust people, which probably made it easier for them to form good and healthy relationships in the future. Some of the youths had not changed as much as others, and were still trying to find out how to form real relationships and how to trust people.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to understand what the care recipients considering as care quality in their long-term eldercare. Our intention has been to contribute a bit to the development of the care work. Previous studies show that user surveys are carried out regularly but there is very few studies that are based on care recipients own opinions and experiences. The main questions in the study have been to examine what is considered as good elder care from a user perspective. Even to understand the characteristics of a good meeting with the care staff and also examine how the elder care in Nybro municipality can improve. This study was based on a qualitative method in the form of seven interviews with recipient of elder care. The interviews were based on five themes which were; background, care, interaction, "special housing and social interaction" and also changes. The collected material is analyzed from a symbolic interactionism perspective. We view the symbolic interactionism as a useful perspective to gain an understanding of the interaction between care recipients and staff, and how it can develop care work The result revealed that the elder care in Nybro Municipality is generally of good quality and that it works well with home care. The care recipients appreciate when the care staffs are cheerful and friendly during visits, and they use the term "helpfulness" to describe what characterize a good treatment. What emerges as a negative aspect of the elder care is that the care staffs are extremely busy and always in a rush at each visit, which may partly affect the care a bit negative. The study shows a desire for change to improve care staff working environment. All respondents have different perceptions of the elderly and what is considered quality of care. Although there are common views on certain things, it is because of their differing views at who they interact with and in what context, the overall situation.

Title: Care of older people in the future, about generations experiences and conceptions

              [Translated title].

    Assessor: Jan Petersson

This study examine generations in three different age–attitudes towards elderly care in the future. Today there is an ongoing debate in Sweden concerning the care of older people. The main focus in the debate is that there is cut down on personnel and resources in the care of the elderly. We have focused on the Kalmar region, since our intention is not to compare with other regions. The study is based on individual experiences and conceptions of the people that participated in this examine, in order to link it to differences and similarities from a generational perspective. To carry out this task, we used a qualitative approach with semi-structured individual interviews. The result is our complied themes from the interviews. The shared beliefs of all participants were that they felt concerned about the factors that can influence the future of their elderly´s care and wellbeing.

Creating social citizenship: Young people, ethnicity and participation in a Swedish local context2012Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis concerns social participation in the Swedish welfare state among young people from ethnic minorities, the opportunities open to them and the constraints they face. It focuses on the interplay between structural social conditions related to social exclusion and subjective experiences in everyday life among these young people. The aim is to study how experiences of social citizenship are manifested in everyday life, and how young women and men from ethnic minorities create opportunities and overcome obstacles. How can experiences of social citizenship be understood through acts of citizenship? How do such experiences become driving forces in constructing lived citizenship? The theoretical framework is based on Thomas Humphrey Marshall’s (1950) understanding of social citizenship, and incorporates contemporary debate aimed at further developing his approach. Special attention is paid to substantive social citizenship, which Tom Bottomore (1992) brought to the discussion, and the subjective perspective developed and emphasized by Ruth Lister (2003, 2007). The data material used in the empirical study includes qualitative interviews with seventeen young people, eleven women and six men, from various ethnic and national backgrounds in the age range of seventeen to twenty-six years. Most research in this field focuses on metropolitan suburban municipalities and large cities, whereas this study investigates young migrants living in a medium-sized Swedish town. Subjective experiences of opportunities for and constraints on achieving equality, social inclusion and social participation in everyday life are explored. These experiences become incentives for their resistance against ethnic discrimination and claims on inclusive social citizenship. One of the main findings is that the content and boundaries of social citizenship are constantly being defined and re-defined by the young people depending on their everyday experiences and the character of their social networks, and also on their length of residence in Sweden and their gender. The main conclusion is that young people are not passive victims of structural ethnic discrimination, but are active in the process of enacting themselves as citizens.

Participation and active engagement of young women and men with migrant backgrounds: a Swedish case2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this presentation I discuss active citizenship as subjective and qualitative dimensions of social citizenship (Lister 1997, 2003, 2007). On one hand I will shed light upon young citizens’ with migrant backgrounds willingness and competence to make a social contribution in society and a wish to transform the society in the name of solidarity. On the other hand I will pay attention to the same citizens’ claims on citizenship on equal terms as the majoritized people. Distinguished from most active citizenship discourses, a willingness to participate and contribute in society is in focus. This alternative approach follows the empirical findings in a study among young women and men with migrant backgrounds conducted in a Swedish middle-sized town (Jacobson Pettersson 2008). The study focuses on individuals’ experiences of social citizenship and social participation[i] (Jacobson Pettersson 2008) discussed as active citizenship and strategies to become full member of the society. The results point at how most of the young women and men interviewed are committed to the common good simultaneously as they demand for legitimate recognition by the majoritized people and not to be discriminated. The message conveyed is that the young women and men in the study (Jacobson Pettersson 2008) are not actively part of society to the extent they wish to be, and furthermore claim they have the right to be. They describe their experience of how the processes of social divisions are more about constraints to actually have the right to and act for answerability, to play a social and political role in constructing the society they live in, than about constraints referred to formal social rights, entitlements and responsibilities. As consequences of what they experience an interest for active citizenship has showed up among them as important strategy to become full member of society through claiming for legitimate recognition by the majoritized people and to play a part in building the Swedish society. I will analyze and discuss their explored willingness and competence to make a social contribution in society and their claim making on citizenship on equal terms as strategies to become full member of society. This will be related to the theoretical perspective ‘acts of citizenship’ developed by Isin and Nielsen (Isin and Nielsen 2008).

    Abstract [en]

Juvenile criminality has been widely discussed in the public debate. But what is there to do about a phenomenon like juvenile criminality in Sweden. Many studies have shown the potential of lowering juvenile criminality if different actors would collaborate. This research aims to explore preventive work and cooperation between different actors working with youth in risk of crime in Angered, with a focus on Hjällbo and Hammarkullen. The study is based on social and situational theory. Data was collected through qualitiative methods; six interviews were taken with various stakeholders and written reports were used from the local board of crime prevention i.e.”Styrgruppen för Tryggare Hjällbo”. The study shows that parents have an important role to play when it comes to prevention of juvenile delinquency. Other important actors are the school, the police, the social services and last but not least local voluntary workers. An obstacle to successful prevention is that the social services and many of the local actors that work with juvenile crime prevention have different ideas about which methods are best to use to prevent youth at risk of entering a criminal career. Privacy is another obstacle that complicates crime prevention for young people in the study area. These two obstacles work against the mechanisms that need to work in order to prevent young people from choosing a criminal career.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to describe how school social workers can help and support students with parents who abuse alcohol or other drugs. We wanted to see how school social workers room for action is presented and how it affects their work with students living with parents who are abusing. We used a qualitative method to elucidate how school social workers handle this issue in a more profound way. By conducting semistructured interviews with six school social workers in one province in southern Sweden we gained exhaustive and detailed answers. In the analysis we used street level bureaucracy and theory of recognition. The result showed that the school social workers regard their overarching room of action as very wide inside school but limited outside. At school the school social worker can support the students with supportive counseling and adapted school attendance. One important task of the school social worker is to help the student to get in contact with other organizations for example, support groups for children. We also found that cooperation is an important part as the school social workers describe themselves as “the spider in the web” with the task of connecting and sharing knowledge with other personnel and organizations. The relation with the student is important to be able to support the students or guide them further. School social workers also regard school as a good place to detect and identify these students, but that it can be difficult to know who these students are. If a specific plan for working with students whose parents abuse alcohol or drugs would affect the school social workers work is difficult to say since none that we interviewed in this study had experience of one.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our study has been to examine the care managers’ attitude to in- service training. We also wanted to see which factors the care managers and a member of the administrative head think influences this. The question formulations in the study were; what does in- service training mean for care managers and the administrative head, what was their attitude against it and which assumptions does the administrative head give to care managers for in- service training. The study is based on qualitative interviews with care managers and with a member of the administrative head. To interpret the material we have been using earlier studies, Senges theory of learning organization and Marsick and Watkins theory about informal and incidental learning. A main result is that the care managers obtain a great deal of possibilities to in- service training, for example meetings, educations and courses. The study also shows that the organization priorities formal learning while the care managers emphasise learning through interaction with other people, for example cohorts, contributors and users. Both care managers and a member of the administrative head says that there is a weakness in terms of follow- up and assessment. One recurrent topic in these discussions is responsibility, but the informants is not united of who’s the responsibility actually is.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine and compare two municipalities’ approaches to deal with men’s violence as a social problem. Further the aim was to analyze social workers’ opinions about interventions for men who practice violence in heterosexual relationships. The study has got a qualitative approach and we did a subjective selection where we chose to apply semi-structured interviews with social workers who work with domestic violence. These interviews were exercised in two different sized municipalities, because we aimed to get information if the work with violent perpetrators differs in the larger and the smaller municipality. We chose to perform three interviews in the larger municipality and two in the smaller. More specifically the aim of the study was to examine what kind of interventions and work methods that were characterized for the organizations and how the preventive work with men’s violence against women were performed in the municipalities. Further we wanted to compare the social workers’ opinions about the interventions for men who practice violence against women. We have adopted a new institutional perspective as a theoretical basis for our analysis. We found in the study that the big difference between the municipalities and their work with violent perpetrators was that the larger municipality had an underlying organization apart from the social service that performed the work. In the smaller municipality the work was integrated with other work tasks on the social service office. Similarities in the municipalities were that the social service offered individual treatment to the perpetrators and they were inspired by ATV: s way of manage violence. Both municipalities aimed to work preventively spreading knowledge in order to make men’s violence visible.

    Abstract

Our purpose was to understand how social workers experience the possible complexities that working with economical aid can entail. As an example we chose to focus on long-term economical aid work. We aimed to address the question of which factors could affect their work. In a prior study, done by Dellgran & Höjer (2003) the conclusion was drawn  that  the combination of economical aid, healthcare and schools makeup a third of  practical social work in the terms of the proportion of the amount of social workers, but only 8 percent of the research is done in those areas. Other studies (Stranz, 2007) demonstrate that the research that is done on working with economical aid is deficient. We interviewed six social workers in two smaller municipalities in the southern of Sweden. Our result indicated that the social workers felt pressured by their work-load and the fact that the amount of new cases had increased. They thought that a possible reason for this could be the weak economic climate and changes in the labour market policies. They also felt that alterations and long office turnaround times at other administrative authorities also contributed. The results showed that the majority of the social workers in our study used a motivational approach in their meetings with clients and they also had the best interest in mind for each and every client. We chose to use the theoretical perspectives of Human service organizations by Yeheskel Hasenfeld (1983) and Demokratins väktare (our translation: the guardians of democracy) by Lennart Lundquist (1998) when we analyzed our results.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to, with a social constructivistic approach, examine how parents, regarded as neglecting their children, are depicted in 12 LVU-legal cases from the Supreme Administrative Court in Sweden. By using a document analysis influenced by discourse analytical tools, we found that there are repeated descriptions of the parents, which constructs an image of parents as shortcoming in the care of their children. The categories lack of emotions, mental disorder, substance abuse and physical maltreatment were the main reasons for child neglect that the parents were described from. Attitudes towards authority, aggression and immaturity, lack of insight, and deficiencies in the home were repeated in the description of the parent. We further found that mothers were regarded as more responsible of the children compared to fathers. According to Goffman, describing certain groups of individuals with discredited words has a stigmatizing effect. It helps to reinforce what is considered normal or abnormal. Furthermore, we have found that the language of the LVU-legal cases, possess a power in the construction of parents who neglect their children, which was analyzed on the basis of Foucault's theory of power.

Because today the society is using social media networks in daily life and social media has become a tool in social work as well. How does social media and social work cooperate? And how does social media effect social workers? For example the website Facebook has grown huge and many people use it everyday. Where is the line between work and private life? To reach this knowledge in this study, qualitative interviews have been done with six social workers that work with children, youths and families. The scientific theory is a phenomenologist approach and for the analyse I used Robert Putnam´s theory of social capital and Antonowsky´s theory about KASAM (sense of coherence). The results of this study showed that the social workers experience that social media in social work has both good and less good sides. I found that their knowledge were quite different and seemed to depend on how much they had used social media earlier. The use of social media in the work with clients was the use of email and text messages. Although, some of the social workers had experienced that clients had found them on the network Facebook. The risks and possibilities the social workers thought that they and the clients could see were the risk in the secrecy and the possibilities to reach more people. The most interesting conclusion was that, even if they didn’t use social media in work, some of them felt that they were indirectly effected by social media and that they sometimes didn’t know how to cope with social medias in their work.

    Abstract [en]

There are several possibilities for those with an eating disorder, who wishes to get treatment and recover to get help and support. But for those who are not ready to recover, there are not any help to receive. Pro-ana is a youth culture where individuals who want to achieve the anorectic ideal help and support each other. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyse the content and the need for the Pro-ana community on Internet, among young people with eating disorders. More specifically the aim was to find out how young Swedish people uses the Pro-ana communities on Internet. The study was an ethnography based on concealed observations of 6 different Pro-ana websites on Internet. During the observations five themes has been used: anonymity, thinspiration, life choice or disease, help or no help and identity. The analysis was based on Goffmans (2004) The presentation of self in everyday life, and the authors thesis about how humans represents them self in the accompany of others. Pro-ana websites consists of diary notes about weight, food, exercise and how to cope with an eating disorder. The Pro-ana culture online has become kind of a support group to which young people turn when society has no knowledge and no resources to meet them and social work are very limited on these sites. When not dare to tell friends and family about their situation, they turn to Pro-ana, which has been described as a sanctuary away from society’s judgements.

    Abstract [en]

Many European countries have a model of formal agreements between the state and voluntary organisations involved in the core field of welfare, regarding their relative roles and cooperation. This dissertation analyzes the establishment of a Swedish agreement and how the cooperation leads up to the agreement. The cooperation process, known as the dialogue process, took place during more than a year, with the government inviting around eighty voluntary organisations. The theoretical framework of the dissertation is mainly what is know as institutional theory and a line of thought describing how ideas are not transferred and spread but translated and spread. The theoretical focus is on how original ideas are interpreted and why they gain a foothold in new contexts. With the help of empirical material in the form of documents, observations and interviews the dissertation shows how the idea of an agreement was spread from England to Sweden and how the government and the voluntary organisations acted during this process. One of the study’s conclusions is that the voluntary organisations took the initiative to create an agreement about “the role of game” but that the government transformed the voluntary organisations’ idea of an agreement to justify their own political goals. The Swedish agreement can therefore be seen as a step in clarifying Swedish social policy as regards responsibility for welfare. Voluntary organisations that have signed the agreement commit to contribute to securing welfare production. The dissertation shows that this role is appreciated by some of the voluntary organisations, while others question it.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse and describe social work students’ view on a person with self-injurious behaviour and the following issues. The aim and focus is on the general depiction. The theoretical perspectives have been intersectionality and its focus on social constructivism, and gender perspectives. The method was semi-structured interviews with eight social work students at Linnaeus University Kalmar. The collected data was the social work students’ opinions and it was contrasted with the previous research and was analysed from the above perspectives. The main conclusion is that social work students’ view on a person with self-injurious behaviour generally not consistent with the previous research. Previous research says that a person with self-injurious behaviour generally is a young, blonde, normal female. The majority of the social work students say that a person with self-injurious behaviour is a depressed, young female with dark hair and dark clothes. The social work students focus more on why a person goes to such extremes and hurts themselves.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this review is to investigate evidence-based practice (EBP), and which arguments are used to justify EBP. The year of 2006 Bergmark and Lundström published an article regarding the problems concerning EBP. They are discussing that several different definitions of EBP are existing, which they mean can lead to difficulties using the EBP-methods in real life. In this study six articles, from the years 2007-2011, have been analyzed using Mertons structure-functional theory and Lipskys theory of street-level bureaucracy. Different definitions of EBP are discussed in the articles and there seem to be a need to clarify the concept. EBP also seems to lead to deprofessionalization and it could be difficult adapting the EBP-methods in the social work because it is perceived as a very complex practice. Overall, the articles mostly inhents a positive attitude towards EBP, where some articles mentions a potential with EBP. Regarding Bergmark and Lundströms article you can see some development regarding EBPs different definitions where it seems to be leading towards a more coherent definition.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about care managers, who process in the care of the elderly, regarding to needs, rules, regulations, guidelines and their freedom of space.

The purpose with this study is to understand how the care managers process out of the basis from the needs of the elderly, the municipal guidelines in relation to the caremanagers freedom of space.

The study has a qualitative approach and is based on semistructured interviews with five different care managers.

To analyze our interview material we have use the street-level bureaucrat theory by Lipsky and Johansson and the theoretical idea empowerment.

Before we started our research about care managers we had an understanding in that the organization had an influence in the judgment of the needs of the elderly. Now we have an understanding in that the relative to the elderly is the one who wants to affect the care manager during the judgment of needs in what effort to make.

Our study indicates that it exist insecurity regarding to the municipal guidelines, which was surprising. We thought that the guideline was something positive and a help full tool for the care managers.

The result in our research points out that the guidelines makes insecurity instead of comfort.

Our study shows that the care managers are contradictory regarding to their freedom of space. In the other hand they consider that their freedom of space is positive, but on the other hand when the municipal guidelines don´t work, they become worried and insecure.

It´s the none working municipal guidelines who gives the care managers a huge freedom of space. Which leads to that the care managers is afraid of doing misjudgments.

Our result don´t distinguish from other studies made in this subject area.

The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze IntimatePartner Violence (IPV). How does contemporary science illustrate men as victimsand women as perpetrators in these relationships? Ten articles were presentedand analyzed in a systematic literature study. The results show that men beingabused by their female intimate partner, do exist and that they in many ways doconform to abused women. There are many underlying causes to the violence inclose relationships. There are also many shapes and degrees in violence and inIntimate Partner Violence (IPV). Furthermore, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) exhibitssymmetry in socio-demographic characteristics, such as gender and ethnicity. Thefindings also points out that Common Couple Violence (CCV) are a much morecommon form of violence than Intimate Terrorism (IT) and that both forms areused by men and women. Finally, violence is ambiguous, includes many aspectsand is not easy to explain among cultural values, norms and social contexts.Still, violence is a universal human issue which demands social interventions.

The purpose of this study is to use a qualitative approach to get an understanding of what is expected of social workers targeted towards women managers in social services. Nine social workers were interviewed. The empirical data was then analyzed on the basis of gender theory. Respondents did not see their supervisor as a manager but more as a social worker with special tasks. Our empirical data indicates that there is a strong belief that men and women possess different properties. The social workers thought that men were likely to make a career and women were considered to work in the area of social care. It was considered to have a different leadership in social services than in other organizations.

    Abstract [sv]

Volontourism: the story about international aid work and tourism2011Ingår i: Places, people, stories, an interdisciplinary & international conference. Linnaeus University, Kalmar 28-30 September 2011, Linnéuniversitetet , 2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Tourism and travelling has become a natural part of modern people’s lives. How and why we travel is constantly changing and travelling continues to be a status marker. New popular tourist sights are post-colonial countries and over the last decades a new form of tourism has emerged within this geography: volunteer-tourism or “volontourism”. This is vacation and aid work in one package. With the argument of making a difference travel agents sell package trips which include possibilities of volunteer work such as work with children, building houses for poor people, conservation or archaeology. By the volunteer trip the tourist transforms to a volunteer worker with access to areas considered as the real and genuine parts of people and country. Places and people not traditionally connected to the tourist industry. Consequently the phenomenon is built up by two parts: tourism and international aid work. My aim is to discuss how international aid work is integrated into the commercial travel market by standard stories of historical international aid work. A standard story in this setting means, for many people, a well known story with a uniform logic that gives collective answers to the question what it is, why it has to be done and who we and they are. It helps people create meaning in their experiences and give explanations to why they take certain actions. Thus, this is something a lot of people recognise and have an idea about. This standard story contains: relations (people in need of help and helpers), a specific aid geography (poor ex-colonial countries) and identity (a collective answer to who we, helpers, and they, people in need of help, are as well as reasons for why aid work). What does the story about international aid work contain and what are the similarities and differences when forwarded into commercial volunteer work?

    Abstract [en]

A new form of foreign travel called “voluntourism” has emerged in Sweden. In advertisements that invite to “make a difference”, travel agencies promote short- term aid opportunities at for example orphanages or schools in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. International volunteer work is nothing new. Rather, the volunteer agencies have entered an old and established organizational field. Using theories of new institutionalism and the analytical phrase “the story about”, this thesis investigates the way international aid work originated and evolved, and how commercial volunteer agencies entered the field. The thesis is partly based on historical data from organizational reports, biographies of aid work icons, and interviews with volunteers active during the 1960s and 1970s. Additionally, it makes use of contemporary data from interviews with representatives from volunteer travel agencies and volunteers. It also includes an analysis of how the travel agencies present their business operations on their websites.

The thesis concludes that travel agencies apply the common perception of international aid work’s characteristics when marketing volunteer travels. This common perception can be traced through the evolution of international aid work. Travel agencies attract volunteers by offering access to this exclusive field. The volunteers are well-educated young women from middle class families. They are looking for experiences from international aid work, perspective on their own lives, and first-hand knowledge of local and traditional societies in poor countries. Nevertheless, due to the esteem in which the organizational field is viewed, a brief period spent as an aid worker is considered a desirable qualification for a job applicant. I interpret volunteer travel as a “grand tour”.

    Summary

The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the practices of needs assessment, and put them in relation to municipal policies and the autonomy of the elderly. Development managers are characterized as grassroots bureaucrats, then they are officers who are in the organization, but also has a direct contact with the elderly applicants for municipal assistance. I wanted to explore how these policies relate to the older people's autonomy and their implications for officer assistance in their daily work. As a theoretical starting point I have used out of a närbyråkratiskt perspective, and a negotiation perspective. Study was conducted using a qualitative approach. The material for analysis were collected from six interviews with the assistance officer from six different municipalities, and an analysis of these municipalities' municipal guidelines for needs assessments. For the result shows that there are three main methods used for needs assessment. These are needs assessment calls, home visits and care planning. Something else that govern aid administrators needs assessment is the investigation finished templates available in the various municipalities. The results also showed that aid administrators are faced with a number of considerations in its work. This could depend on how the local guidelines were formulated and the elderly did not receive municipal assistance. Aid managers agreed that the autonomy of the elderly, it is applicable to a needs assessment, yet there are only a certain range of actions which they transformed into mature through negotiations and "coaxes".

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

In Sweden all persons under the age of 18 are considered children. The age when it is possible to be held responsible for a criminal act, and therefor convicted in court, is 15. Society’s and, perhaps first and foremost, the authority’s attitude towards juvenile crime is that they should not be equal adults in the process within criminal law. Because children are considered essential for the society of tomorrow, it is important to pay extra attention to crimes committed by juveniles. The social services authorities are considered to have the best resources and competence to handle this group of juveniles. In the criminal law process the prosecutor requests a statement regarding the young person who is reasonably suspected of a criminal act. The statement should contain information about if the young person is in need of certain interventions from social services in order to prevent unfavorable development.

The conclusion that has been drawn when the statements has been reviewed is that a borderland has been created where social law and criminal law overlap. This overlapping is in a way a collision where social aspects and principles of criminal law have to meet. However, it is not always easy to make both sides satisfied. As a way to meet the needs of both sides the borderland becomes a compromise consisting of the process regarding the juveniles. The purpose of this essay is to describe and understand the compromise that has been made where statements and young juveniles are existing.

The aim of this essay is to study 23 statements from social services that prosecutor request and the 23 court records attached to them. All statements and court records are regarding persons between 15 – 17 years old. The study is limited to the period between 2010-01-01 to 2010-12-31. This essay has been from a qualitative point of view where the discourse analysis as an text analytical method has been used to understand the collected statements and court records.

Central results is that the statements reviewed in this essay overall are satisfying in fulfilling the social law and criminal law aspects. However the results also point out that an uncertainty within the social services regarding the design of the statements also is to be found. Descriptions of social aspects about the young juvenile behind the statement seems to be important to emphasize.

    Abstract [en]

A publicly funded elderly care that is widely available at people’s homes has been described as unique for the Nordic countries. There is much research that focuses on the relationship between caregivers and care receivers, and also about how work is organized in these organizations. However, research into how care work is organized in organizations that have implemented a salutogenic approach is limited. This is a qualitative study aimed to examine how caregivers feel that the organization of work in elderly care change after implementation of salutogenic elements in their daily work. The study conducted six semi-structured interviews with caregivers that have experienced different ways of organizing care work. Study shows that the organization of care work has gone from a Tayloristic, task-oriented and routinized work towards a salutogenic, person-oriented and personalized approach. The study also shows that dilemmas may arise in the new way to organize care work when caregivers and care receivers values and opinions differ. Caregivers then orient between sins of omission and abuse.

    Abstract [en]

Media has reported frequently about elder abuse in Sweden during the year of 2011. The authors have found an interest in elder abuse due to the attention about it and the law about the duty to report elder abuse, which is called lex Sarah. The aim was to investigate, due to quantitative method with surveys, the care givers tolerance to elder abuse, attitude and knowledge about lex Sarah. The result of the thesis was analyzed based on two theories, Lipsky’s street-level bureaucracy as well as Svensson’s, Johnsson’s and Laanemets’ theory about knowledge. The result of the study was that the care givers have knowledge about lex Sarah and believe that lex Sarah helps to improve their work. The respondents’ tolerance to psychological elder abuse were high and their tolerance to physiological abuse were significantly lower. Therefore physiological elder abuse is more often to be reported than psychological elder abuse.

DYSLEXIA, AWARENESS AND DISCRIMINATORY POTENTIAL: Perceptions of dyslexia among teachers in primary schools in Prishtina2014Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 80 poäng / 120 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

The most common reading disability is dyslexia. This reading disability encompasses various symptoms such as poor spelling outcomes, reading fluency and difficulties in expressing oneself. Failur to diagnose children coping with dyslexia is a potential risk of discrimination and social exclusion.

    Aim

The aim of this Master thesis is to explore if the primary school teachers in Prishtina are conscious of the term dyslexia. This provides a better understanding of teacher’s perceptions about dyslexia and to which extent they are aware of it. An additional purpose is to investigate teachers’ awareness of their responsibilities to provide equal opportunities for these children.

    Method

A qualitative research, using an open-ended and semi-structured questionnaire had been utilized to collect data about teacher’s awareness and knowledge concerning dyslexia and its issues. The texts provided by the surveys were subjected to thematic analysis.

    Result

The results of the presented qualitative research helped to understand the awareness of the primary teachers in Prishtina concerning the term dyslexia. The findings showed that most of the teachers heard about dyslexia, but demonstrated clear misconceptions of what dyslexia is. Even though the majority of teachers had misconception of dyslexia, more than half of them considered their role as very important to provide equal opportunities for children coping with dyslexia.

    Conclusion

One of the significant findings to emerge from this thesis is that the primary teacher's of Prishtina have misconceptions about dyslexia. The results of this study support the idea that due to the lack of knowledge among teachers about dyslexia, children coping with dyslexia might be at risk of discrimination and exclusion comparing to other children.

    Abstract [en]

In a new reform in 2001, Swedish authorities emphasized the need for support for persons with psychiatric disabilities living in the community. This reform included the establishment of a new occupation: the Swedish case manager, personligt ombud (PO). In examining this new occupation, the overall aim of this thesis is to analyze how the Swedish case manager, PO, as an evolving occupation, affects and is affected by the organisational and professional field in which it enters. More specifically, the aim is to describe and analyse, using organisational and professional theories, the changing processes that the PO con-tributes to in the welfare system and the practice of social policy, the field of social psychiatry focusing on the discretion for professionals and in the under-standing of the professional role to help as described by clients.

Three studies have been carried out. The first study, for the licentiate´s degree, focused on the PO occupational role and functions for the welfare system as well as for mental health service users. In the second study, the results from the first study were analyzed together with the results of another reform, namely, the Swedish care manager reform, in order to investigate their joint implications for social policy and its practice. The third study focused on what meaning the PO has for the clients and particularly what features of the service the clients find to be helpful.

In summary, the results indicate that the PO contributes to the development of a negotiated rights model, by taking on the assignment of advocacy as a client representative, and then defining the social worker as a representative for the organisation with the assignment of needs assessment. In the field of social psychiatry, the PO fills a vacancy by supporting the legitimacy of the professionals as well as their organisations. Furthermore, the PO has a function of providing organised transparency through restricting the discretion of other professionals. The discretion of the PO itself has weak boundaries allowing for great liberty of action. Finally, the PO service has led to a new understanding of the professional role, as built on reciprocity with the client, using knowledge evolving from the interaction between the professional PO and the client. These findings suggest that the PO could be understood as a new occupation evolving from weak professional traits to, as suggested, a new model for professionalism, called user-mandated professionalism. This emphasizes the reciprocative foundation of knowledge between the service user and the professional.

Traits of a representative welfare state: the Swedish example2010Ingår i: International Journal of Social Welfare, ISSN 1369-6866, E-ISSN 1468-2397, Vol. 19, nr 4, s. 402-411Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The care manager reform and the case manager reform are new reforms in the social care services in Sweden, which are evolving during the 2000s. Together they shape the social care services introducing a new way of decision-making where representatives for the organisation (care manager) and the users (case manager) negotiate. The reforms have been analysed in two studies with results presented in this article. Using the concepts of role, orientation, function and assignments, it is argued that the managers come to the negotiations on rights from different positions that are both conflicting and complementary. They further mediate the development towards a welfare mix, where the market, social networks and users interact to obtain the public welfare provision. Through this negotiated rights model, it is argued that traits of a representative welfare state emerge, with the distinction of moving the focus to the administrative practices and their differences away from political ideologies.

"Det är ju normalperspektivet som han ska anpassa sig till, så det försöker vi ju anpassa honom till": En studie om föräldraskap då barnet har Downs syndrom2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
