En postindustriell stads dynamik: Kalmars samarbeten och konkurrenser i strävan efter expansion genom handel2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The thesis strives to reveal the dynamics between a central and a peripheral shopping area in Kalmar, Sweden. The establishment of larger shopping centers has become a hallmark of postindustrial cities. Cities globally are at risk of creating an urban economic rift between the central and peripheral shopping areas. By establishing major shopping venues around the traditional central business districts, cities hope to create a larger customer hinterland and thereby also increased economic growth. The aim of this thesis is answered by two research questions regarding collaboration and competition between two shopping areas; the central Kvarnholmen and peripheral Hansa City Mall. As it theoretical framework, the thesis mobilizes discussions on the postindustrial city as well as additional economic theory concerning the so-called Disneyization. An overview over previous research is provided, and empirical data was produced through the following methods; Semi-structured interview, structured interview, simple observation and document analysis. The results were analyzed using a universal approach.

The thesis concludes that the dynamics between the two shopping areas are fluctuating; sometimes characterized by cooperation, other times by competition. Kalmar municipality’s retail strategy aims and encourages the shopping areas to collaborate. When seeing Kalmar on a smaller scale, this is surely the case: the shopping areas are seemingly united, with common image production and working together towards their hinterland. Viewing the dynamics on a larger local scale, however, a strong competition between Kvarnholmen and Hansa City Mall is evident; as both shopping areas strive to retain their consumers on their specific area of trade.

Det förlofvade landet: En brevanalys av Amerikabrev 1850-18702014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The Promised land – A letter analysis of America letters from 1850-1870 This essay is about the Swedish emigration to America. This essay will focus on the period 1840-1870, where the main focus will be the american civil war, and what the immigrants wrote back to their relatives in Sweden. This study will also focus on the integration of Swedish immigrants.

My main question are what did the swedes write back to Sweden during the war? And how did it differ from the period before and after the war?

But also can a war assimilate a immigrant faster than it would be done without the war?

The conclusion that has been made is that the war did help the swedish immigrants to integrate much faster than usually. Also the study shows that the language before the war was of that character that they where missing home whereas it shows that after the war it had completley turned around, instead of wanting to go back to Sweden, they wanted their relatives to come over to America.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this bachelor thesis is to analyse the publication- and citation patterns of the articles concerning bibliometrics, informetrics, scientometrics, and webometrics which can be found on Web of Science, and give a brief description of how the definition of the four terms has developed. I have looked at how the number of published papers have developed over the years and to what extent they have been quoted by other researchers. I have also briefly adressed what other research fields are referring to articles published in the four areas. The material I looked at includes articles that can be found on Web of Science with one (or more) of the four terms as topic and are categorised under library- and information science starting with the first bibliometrics article which was published in 1969, and ending in 2013. The results show that the publications in all four fields are continuously increasing. For bibliometrics and scientometrics it shows a slow increase up until 2005, then increasing exponentially. Informetric seems to be a comparatively small topic and webometrics is increasing, but is still a relatively young topic which makes it hard to make any concrete conclusions Regarding the citations, it shows that citations for the bibliometrical articles have had a steady curve increasing up until 2005, and then decreasing, the informetric- and scientometrical articles have rather scattered results and the webometrics have decreasing results, which I deduce is based on the fact that it is a new field and citations do not appear until after a few years. Finally I recommend future research, based on the related research I have found.

Etnisk boendesegregation: En kvalitativ studie om etnisk boendesegregation i Nybro ur ett postkolonialt perspektiv2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A refugee reception has been placed in Kungshall, one of Nybros residential areas. The area has a bad reputation and there are arguably prejudices about the area from the local population. I therefore want to investigate if an ethnic residential segregation exists in Kungshall, from a postcolonial perspective. The following research questions have been formulated: How do residents who doesn’t live in the refugee reception, look at ethnic residential segregation in Nybro? How has Kungshall changed since the refugee reception? Does a cultural racism exist in Kungshall?

The study is a qualitative study using semi structured interviews of four people living in the residential area, a person who has moved out of the area and a person working on the housing corporation “Nybro bostads AB”, who is one of the housing corporation responsible for the residential area Kungshall. The study is based on post-colonial theory. According to all the interviewees, there is an uneven balance between Swedes and immigrants in the neighborhood. And according to all the interviewees living in the area, too many refugees have been placed in Kungshall, and the residential area has changed for the worse in recent history. One of the interviewees has already moved, and the others living in the area either know someone who has moved out of the area or is planning to themselves. And the main reason to ethnic residential segregation is often explained in terms of cultural differences between “us-and- them”: between the refugees and the others. It is clear from the interviews that there is a cultural racism among people and the main reason for people moving out of the area could arguably be related to cultural racism.

    Abstract [en]

In today’s archaeology there’s a growing need for non-invasive prospection methods. However there’s a methodological gap and what’s missing is a method for locating human bones. In this study a specially trained German shepherd is put through scientific tests determining how good the dog is at telling the different between the scent of human and animal bones. The dog is also tested in an outdoor environment to simulate an actual archaeological site. The tests in this study show that the dog can distinguish between the smell of human and animal bones with an accuracy of 94,2 % and that he can detect human bones in the field. Further tests need to be conducted to calibrate the method.

"Kunskap är bästa bot mot tro!": En pilotstudie där historiebruk i tv-serierna Pip-Larssons och En ö i havet analyseras och ställs i relation till rådande styrdokument i ämnet historia 2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The nineteen nighties were a decade marked by shifting political landscapes, a troublesome economy, and ideological changes. Historiography and the common stance on history also changed due to the above mentioned factors and the end of the Cold War. All of these factors contributed to the fall of Sweden’s state-owned monopoly on television, which in turn changed television viewing habits. History was once again at the forefront of social debates; however, it was at the same time not prioritized within the school’s curriculum Lpo94.

This study aims to investigate the usage of history in two fictional youth series that aired in Sweden during this time; Pip-Larssons (1998) and En Ö I Havet (2003). Furthermore, this study compares the history used in these series to the history that was being taught in the, relatively, new curriculum Lpo94. To accomplish this a qualitative analysis of the two series contents is being used to put the material in relation to Klas-Göran Karlsson’s typology of different uses of history. Of his seven different categories this study focuses on the moral use and the political-pedagogical use of history.

The study found that history was being used in these television programs both from a politically-pedagogically perspective and from the moral perspective.

Kandering av religion i Japan: Bruket av gulliga bilder och lekfulla figurer i religiösa institutioner i Japan2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay has sought to highlight, study and contextualize a selected phenomenon in Japan: the usage of cute pictures and figures by religious institutions. In the essay, four case studies of religious institutions, which at some point have used an aesthetic concept called moe, which is associated with youthfulness, playfulness and consumption, are studied. This paper seeks to study why this happens and how the public reacts. During the course of the thesis, I come to the conclusion that these four religious institutions have gone through a process that I have chosen to call the kanderingsprocess (the process of making candied fruit): the religious institutions have chosen to cover part of their activities with a sugar layer, cuteness (moe), thereby moving the focus from their religious activities to more secular elements that can attract a larger audience.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay, I study Toriyama Sekien’s yōkai (supernatural beings) catalogues and undertake a diachronic examination surrounding Sekien's imprint on his contemporaries and modern times, striving to highlight the aesthetic dimension that adds to the popularity of yōkai today. Through an image analysis based on a modified version of Roman Jakobson's communication model and a diachronic examination of Sekien’s influence on the imagination of the Japanese people, I have investigated how and why Sekien chose to depict yōkai in his catalogues as kawaii (cute). The questions that have driven my study are as follows:

       1. Why does Toriyama Sekien kawaii use aesthetic codes in his four catalogues?

       2. In what ways have Toriyama Sekien's catalogues influenced the Japanese people's imagination and world view?

The study is anchored in cute studies theories, and with the theory Displacement of Meaning, I have identified possible answers to how Sekien has influenced the Japanese people's imagination: (1) kawaii aesthetic codes are found in Toriyama Sekien's work, because Sekien tried to make his creations as attractive as possible. To accomplish this, he used aesthetic elements which cute studies theories have found control what we perceive as kawaii and thus attractive. (2) Toriyama Sekien demystified the supernatural, took it out of context and allowed Japanese people to take the supernatural out of its traditional setting. This paved the way for yōkai as consumer items and (3) allowed modern creators to fill the yōkai (consumer items) with nostalgia and reintroduce them as symbols of a lost and idealized past.

Bland gröna gubbar och röda faror: En historisk studie om vanligt förekommande teman i amerikansk science-fictionskräckfilm under McCarthyeran2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The following study has its origin and context in the politically polarised McCarthy era of the American history. With the WWII in retrospect, politicians in Western nations quickly acknowledged the potential impact and sphere of influence of popular culture and its ability to form public opinion. During this period attempts were made to censor culture from underlying socialist messages in order to spread and awake support for the government, especially in mainstream Hollywood productions. However, how successful were these attempts and did it actually create a resistance against the censorship’s proclaimers? This study analyses four different Hollywood science fiction films from the 1950’s and argues that the underlying messages were more diverse than previously expected. Some of the productions seemed to endorse the McCarthyist values, whereas others more clearly rejected these sets of values, implicitly claiming they were a highly irrational response to an unstable international situation.

The way of genealogy to the library A study in the emergence of a microfilm archive of Växjö Diocese- and Country Library

My purpose is to describe the underlying factors that influenced the growth of a microfilm archive of genealogy in Växjö Diocese- and Country Library and analysing the role of the country librarian Eric Eilert in this process. I do this by using an actor and structure analysis. The source material is mostly taken from the Municipal Archives in Växjö. To get a better preunderstanding, I describe how the microfilming of genealogical material was made available by the Mormons, but also the actions of the Swedish government. I also describe specifically what was done in the Växjö Library. My study shows that the specific underlying factors, that influenced the growth of a microfilm archive, was Mormon filming of the Swedish archives, the skills of AB Rekolid, the reorganization to a Diocese- and Country Library in Växjö, the demand of local scientists for research material, further the need of protection of the borrowed documents from abrasion damage and the decision to buy a reading unit. The role of Eric Eilert in the building up process of a microfilm archive was crucial. He was acting as an agent in several different structures such as AB Rekolid, the library board, the land archives in Vadstena, the County council in Kronoberg, the National Archives and the Library in Växjö. He was responsive for the requests and anchored each step of the process within the library board and the County council. He was also behind the financial plan where the county council and the municipalities would share the cost of microfilm archive.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine whether there exists a hegemonic relationship between librarians and users of libraries with a focus on the librarians point of view. The future of movies in the library is also going to be examined. Qualitative interviews were conducted and were examined for signs of hegemony and habitus according to the respective theories. The results of these interviews showed that librarians were in favor of user suggestions to improve the libraries collection. We found that there exists a hegemonic relationship in the libraries, but that it was subliminal and unwanted. The concept of quality has been proven to be subjective for the medium of movies and also for the libraries’ collections. The future is uncertain but hope is that movies in libraries will be preserved, though possibly in a different form.

Geronimo eller Goyathlay?: Hur en apacheindian presenteras i sin självbiografi samt i annan litteratur.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Forskningsläget utgår mycket från Angie Debo’s bok Geronimo: The man, his time, his place, men all litteratur diskuteras även utifrån ett psykoanalytiskt perspektiv genom Ludvig Igras teorier kring hur människan hanterar traumatiska situationer.

    Abstract [en]

Public libraries have begun to realize that they must try to develop the youth department, youth participation, and event planning in order to create an attractive meeting place youths can see as a resource in their lives. Librarians have also begun to realize that the youth department needs more space than it had before and preferably to not integrate youths with children, because youths would like to be seen as individuals and developing adults. Libraries also realize that they need to ask the youth what they want and need out of their library experience to make youth libraries a competing force and an advocate for youth development. The purpose of this paper was to investigate how youth librarians work with young individuals to make them involved in the library. The study is based on the theory of Positive Youth Development (PYD), which is centered on the need for young people to build relationships, feel involved, and feel needed to develop into well-rounded, healthy, and active individuals of society. The theory is based on previous research in various areas of youth development, compiled in order to build a clear and unified theory. For the gathering of empirical material, a qualitative method was used in which interviews were conducted with eight librarians in five libraries across Sweden. The results showed that youth librarians want to work with youths to improve their libraries and to be a resource for young library users. Most youth librarians are passionate about their jobs and wish to include youths in the planning and performing of library activities, as well as listen to their requests in issues about the library facilities, and they want to build a genuine connection with the youths both inside and outside of the libraries, as well as on social media platforms. However, youth librarians face difficulties in making these requests into reality; having to work against issues as the opinions of youths as problems shared by the adult public and other librarians, as well as working with a group as diverse as youths.

    Abstract [sv]

This study aims to describe the influence of natural law on the common concept of justiceamongst Swedish officers around 1700. Through this study I intend to establish that therewere discrepancies and expressions of other norms in 17th and 18th century military culture. Both from natural law but also from Christian belief. A secondary aim is to establish howsuch variances were manifested and how they can be explained.A few theoretical starting-points have been used as a guide in developing the purpose andrelevant questions for this study. I intend to describe the key features of the concept of naturallaw as thoroughly as needed, through relevant legal literature. The next step will be to mapthese outlines against texts from the time, through a qualitative close reading. This study has investigated, at least, seven diaries from the time. Through triangulation, crossanalysis and comparative interpretation, the results have been evaluated with the purpose ofcrystallizing a common synthesis. The result of these findings varies, but in my opinionnatural law had an impact on certain subjects in the Swedish Empire around 1700. This notionopens the way for interesting perspectives when trying to understand this period.

    Abstract [en]

In this study emphasis was on pupils’ expectations regarding beliefs and conceptions of life among teachers within the school subject of religion. Additionally this study also concentrated on the consequences of teachers’ beliefs on their legitimacy and teaching. The study’s method was qualitative including semi-structured interviews in two separate schools. These interviews consisted of six pupils in the third grade of upper secondary education. The pupils were all aged 18 and selected mainly through a convenience sample. In this study the applied theory derived from four theoretical concepts legitimacy, discourse, stigma and secularization. These theoretical concepts were linked to create a theoretical model. This model was applied in analyzing the material from the interviews. The results showed that the majority of the pupils had expectations on teachers in the subject religion, regarding their beliefs. This meant that if a teacher had a religious belief this was regarded as a deviation from the norms that surrounded the pupils. Pupils were of the opinion that the teacher should keep his beliefs private in his class. The majority of pupils expected the teacher in the subject religion to be objective and neutral. If the teacher should fail to comply with the pupils’ expectations, it would have a negative effect concerning his legitimacy.

    Abstract [en]

Difficulties distinguishing the ethnographic object and the ethnographer's analysis can pose a challenge to the conduct and dissemination of ethnographic work. The close distance between ethnographic observation and the ethnographer's interpretation elides the boundary between considerations of theory and method. In his book, Interpretation and Social Knowledge, Reed describes interpretivism as an epistemological approach aimed at harnessing the potential of social explanations developed in ethnography's interstitial position – the space between theory and social reality. This issue ofEthnographyc provides a forum for ethnographers coming from different theoretical positions and working in different empirical areas to reflect upon on the value and limitations of interpretivism in ethnography.

The purpose of the study is partly to study video games as a type of information system and partly to study gamers information use, information seeking and also the experience of gaming. A selection of five games have been analysed using a topology for video game analysis created by Espen Aarseth. A quantitative investigation has also been made, in the form of a web survey distributed through four Swedish online forums, the result of which was analysed using Carol Collier Kuhlthaus model of the information seeking process. The study showed that video games can partly be understood as information systems with built in obstacles, uncertainty and supportive structures. It also showed that gamers are largely independent in their game related information seeking and information use, but that they are also accustomed to turning to informal mediatiors for help. Lastly, the study showed that some similarities can be found in the cogntive and affective experiences of the information seeking process and the gaming experience respectively. These findings may serve as a starting point for further research of how gaming may support the individual's information seeking process, as well as their understanding of the process and the stages involved.

    Abstract [en]

The prostitute has always been a canvas for society to paint its picture on. Who she was was not as important as who society made her out to be. This essay intends to show how the idea of the prostituted woman was constituted during the regulation of prostitution in the late 19th and early 20th century in Stockholm. Basing my study on the idea of constructivism as well as Foucaults theories of power, I performed a discourse analysis on newspaper articles written in the abolitionist newspaper Sedlighetsvännen as well as medical and social argumentative writings from doctors and professors. With that I have sketched an image of the prostituted woman as she was during the regulation. This image or idea may serve as an illustration as to how social identity is constructed through discourse.

    Abstract [en]

In the 1700’s, natural history played an essential part in constructing the western view of the east and its inhabitants. Based on this assumtion, the primary aim of this study has been to examine how two of Carl Linaeus’ apostles (Petrus Forsskål and Fredric Hasselquist) wrote about their specific cultural encounters while travelling.

In its essence, the results of the study has been that Mary Louise Pratts  previous writings are applicable also on the travel writings of Forsskål och Hasselquist. Altough with a few significant deviations. For example it seems that the apostles considered the native history more relevant than what Pratts theory would give them credit for.

    Abstract [en]

Sustainable development consists of three different dimensions, social, economic and ecological sustainable development. Social sustainability focuses on social factors such as human rights, democracy, health, education and gender equality. Economic sustainability can be understood as economic development which does not adversely be at the expense of ecological or social sustainability. Ecological sustainability focuses on the environment where production of goods and services does not compromise the ability of ecosystems. The different dimensions concerns different issues in sustainability work and there are different ways of wiewing their relationship.

Moreover, the issue of the study is to develop an understanding of sustainable development's dimensions from a holistic perspective. The aim is also to highlight the geography teaching in today's school, where the scope of the different dimensions is prioritized. This study is of a qualitative nature. The result is based on semi structured interviews with three teachers in geography. They show that the participant's views on sustainable development differ. Two of the teachers have a view that is based in the ecological dimension while one teacher sees sustainable development from a holistic perspective. The result also shows that teacher's perceptions of sustainable development affect the scope of the dimensions of their teaching. Common to the three teachers is that the social dimension gets the least space in the teacher's teaching.

    Abstract [en]

This essay analyses how Judaism and Hinduism are portrayed in textbooks of religion. To get a width in the study three textbooks from different publishers are examined. The analysed textbooks are produced for secondary school according to the newest curriculum from 2011. The study inspects whether the books are consistent or not and if they are in what way and in which aspects the textbooks are inconsistent. It also focuses on generalizations and the problems that follow with it. The material has been divided into six categories. Then the categories are examined one by one and with the different perspectives of consistency and generalization.  The textbooks that have been studied are all inconsistent in some respect in their portrayals of the religions in question. These inconsistencies are mostly about the amount of space different aspects of both religions get. Sometimes one part of Judaism is well described while the same part is missing in the chapter about Hinduism.  Plenty of generalizations are found in the textbooks. These encourage the reader to think of the religions as more uniform than they really are. This also leads to certain people representing the entire religion. In Judaism it is the Orthodox Jews that are most often represented and in Hinduism it is Indian Hinduism that is described. This entails that the groups that are presented in the textbooks become stereotypes. Students may be led to believe that these are the only ways to practice the religious traditions.

The aim of this thesis is to see how dark skinned people separate in two movies from the early 19th century. I am also going to analyze the movies from analysis questions that can be founded under the chapter called Analys. The movies I have been watching to analyze are The Birth of a Nation from year 1915 and Tarzan the Ape man from year 1932. The first movie from year 1915 is a reflection from 1860 but booth movies are reflections about the relationships between white westerner and black people from Africa in the beginning of the 1900th century. What the movies gave me as a receiver is that black people in the USA and South Africa shouldn’t be active in politics or even get the power to rule at all and it is very clear to see during the movies. According to the movies black people aren’t capable to rule in USA or in their own country in the continent Africa. The movies also show that black people should work with the cleaning and to please white people. I am going to use social representation theory in this thesis. The method that is used here is to watch the movies, write what they are about and then compare them in nine analyzing questions that is presented in the thesis.

Historyscapes in Alor: Approaching indigenous history in Eastern Indonesia2016Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with history and history-making practices in Alor, a small island in southeastern Indonesia. As in all of Indonesia, the people of Alor have experienced European colonialism, and after independence, a period of centralised, authoritarian rule under the New Order (1965-1998). This regime focussed heavily on Indonesia as a united entity, and history was an instrument used in building the nation.

Democratisation and decentralisation reforms after 1998 saw interest in formulating the history of the region, village or group rather than the nation blossom. My research took place in the history boom of the 2000s when recording history was a task of urgency for many in Alor. A theoretical and methodological challenge rose from the observation of two different approaches to history, each with separate understandings of what ‘history’ is and what its sources are: ‘academic history’ and ‘indigenous history’. Academic history is concerned with time and dates; indigenous history emphasises spatiality and place. Academic history tends to rely on archival sources and is concerned with establishing chronologies of events. By contrast, indigenous history in Alor is based on oral sources, objects preserved locally, and stories rooted in the landscape. Indigenous histories may include non-human actors like dragons or sea-people living in underwater villages. In academic history, such accounts are discarded as legends or myths of no relevance to history. In this thesis, the ontological gap between these two modes of history is central. I argue that indigenous stories reveal much about historical experiences. The realism claimed by academic history is just another human construct of the past.

In the thesis, I develop the idea of a ‘historyscape’ as a methodological tool for handling indigenous histories displaying a wealth of narrators, stories and themes relating to the past. ‘Historyscapes’ is a term which unites conceptual and geographical understandings of an area or realm. A historyscape is shaped and marked off from other areas by stories and perceptions about, as well as experiences from, a shared past. Applied to Alor, the historyscape methodology reveals geographies based on the manner groups and areas connect to each other through key stories. For Alor, I establish four historyscapes. In each, an initial place-oriented reading of indigenous sources is followed by a chronological reading, in which the sources of academic history are included. The juxtaposition with academic history mainly shows the manner in which the colonial powers (Dutch and Portuguese) related to different parts of Alor at different times. From these sources periods of friction between colonial and indigenous are highlighted. The four historyscapes in Alor show variations in historical experiences within short distances, but also commonalities found across a new story-geography.

    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

In 1937 the Swiss American anthropologist Cora Du Bois (1903–91) traveled by sea from New York, via the Netherlands, to the Dutch East Indies. She was a self-conscious social scientist, or as she writes in a letter: a “lady-explorer” on her way to an isolated part of the Indonesian archipelago. Du Bois was intentionally looking for a remote place, as her research within the fashionable culture and personality school required investigations into a society little affected by Western influences. Du Bois set out on a pioneering mission; she was the first to try out methods from psychoanalysis in a non-Western setting and had been advised to choose the island of Alor for the study.

Cora Du Bois’ book, The People of Alor, published in 1944, is an important work within the field of psychological anthropology. The author would later become the first woman to teach anthropology at Harvard University. What is less well known is that Du Bois is a celebrity outside the academic world. She has become a heroine in the Abui community she studied, and is quite famous across the whole of Alor. Since Du Bois left the island in 1939, never to return, she has lived on in collective memory as a vivid figure to which hopes for the future are attached. Following her departure, a cult emerged around the anthropologist, and it is still evolving. Du Bois was incorporated into existing beliefs in benevolent magical beings.

The main question here is, how and why an American woman, who appeared—and disappeared—in the late 1930s, has reached cult status in Alor.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine how librarians reflect on their own learning in their workplace, with a focus on digitization. The purpose is to get an improved understanding about how librarians feel about the need for constant development, both at an individual and organizational level, how, when and why they learn, and in what situations. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach with the data being collected through seven interviews with librarians working in public libraries in southern Sweden. To analyze the data, and also as a theoretical basis, the authors used a combination of previous research and learning theories developed by Knud Illeris. The study shows that the librarians have a positive attitude toward digitization of the libraries, that they view competence development like a natural part of their profession, that some personality traits, mainly flexibility and curiosity, are key for a successful personal development, that more time reserved for more formal education is needed on the libraries and that most of their development is occurs by informal learning in collaboration with their colleagues and library patrons. The authors hope that the results from this study can be used as a sort of guidance for library managers when is comes to making decisions concerning development on their library.

    Abstract [en]

There has been a recent debate in swedish media about wether public breastfeeding is acceptable or not. Studies from mostly North America and England has shown that women feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public. Sweden has a high rate of breastfeeding. The World Healh Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding until the child is six months. There has not been any studies approaching women’s individual experiences of breastfeeding exclusively in Sweden and therefore the purpose of this study was to explore women’s experiences of breastfeeding in public and see if the experiences changes the breastfeeding behavior. The two research questions were – what are women’s experiences of breastfeeding in public places, and are women limited geographically when they are breastfeeding?

The study has a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews as a method. Four women were interviewed and the results showed that the women mostly were comfortable breastfeeding in public but they could feel uncomfortable because they experienced that other people could be uneased with them breastfeeding in public places. Some of the women felt that they had to be discrete and therefore hid their breast. Two of the women were actively reflecting on their breastfeeding as a way to normalize public breastfeeding. The women are not directly geographically limited, but because they feel uncomfortable they can create private rooms in public places by being discrete.

    Abstract [en]

GIS is a relatively new phenomenon in the subject for geography. In order for the students to get a good GIS education, proper technical equipment is required. The Swedish National Agency for Education show, through statistics about the costs for elementary school, that private schools generally spend more money per student on equipment than what is the case in public schools.

The purpose of this study is to examine if the prerequisites for conducting GIS education differ between public schools and private schools. Are there noticeable differences in the education and the time spent on GIS education? To find the answers to this, six teachers from six different schools, who in some form teach GIS, where interviewed. The results show that the access to the technical devices is better at private schools. The way both school forms present the data that they have gathered is a bit different.

    Abstract [en]

In 1865 the four national estates in Sweden voted to reform the national representation to a bicameral parliament. This reform was preceded by a rise in liberal sentiment in the country, especially among the emerging middle class. The vote was not unanomous however and some newspapers backed up the more conservative representatives that were hesitant to pass the reform. Three of these conservative papers have been examined and analysed, to identify the arguments against the reform that were presented, and how they viewed the reform. The objections that were vocalized by the papers mainly focused on the upheaval the reform was feared to cause. The liberal press was considered misleading and hypocritical, when discussing the issue. The newspapers did not deny the problems with the current representation, instead they prefered the changes to be smaller and more gradual, except for Nya Dagligt Allehanda, which is positive to the new change. One suggestion to an alternative representation is a system based on a class system, instead of income. The liberal reformers are seen as a threat to stability and are described as revolutionary more than once. A major fear regarding the reform was that the second chamber would facilitate mobrule in place of the current representation. Earlier works in the area have mainly focused on the reformers, but this work shows their sceptical, conservative counterparts.

When history is discussed, it is commonly done in a national or international setting. The regional or local levels are often not discussed. This essay wills therefore investigate how the regional identity in the province of Småland is represented as pertaining to a select few historically significant individuals i.e. Nils Dacke, Carl von Linnaeus, Esaias Tegnér, Elin Wägner, Vilhelm Moberg & Astrid Lindgren.  Narrative identity and history usage are the main theoretical standpoints of this investigation. The method consists of qualitative text analysis applied to a number of examples of history usage tied to the select individuals. The sources used are mainly online information targeted at visitors. The results show a varying degree of impact on the provincial history usage, with Dacke, Lindgren and Moberg being clearly linked to “Småland” identity, while the other individuals where less tied to the region specifically.  The identity expressed in the media examined was well in line with what can be found in earlier works on regional history and identity in Småland.

This qualitative research study aims to investigate how eight members of the Society of Friends (also known as Quakers) experience a divine presence in their Meeting for Worship. The purpose is also to find out how their identity as Quakers has been created, and to see how they look at their Meeting of Worship when it comes to ritual as a concept.

The method used in this study is individual, semi-structured interviews and observations of Meeting of Worship. The results show a relatively homogeneous group of individuals from a secular upbringing who as adults sought out a community where silence is appreciated and used to achieve an experience of a divine presence. Berger and Luckmann's theories of socialization have been applied to the results and the discussion reveals how the secondary socialization has been essential in the process of forming the individual into being a Quaker. There is however one exception, in the form of one participant who grew up in the Society of Friends. Catherine Bell’s ritual theory, that no ritual can be defined without its context, can be applied to the Quaker’s view of a ritual. The view Bell has on rituals can be used to understand the views shared by the participants in the study.

Vad var egentligen problemet?: en analys av SOU Framtidsvägen och ämnesplanen i historia2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze how problems are represented within SOU 2008:27. Further more, the aim is to analyze how the new subject plan for history can bee seen as a product of this document. The method used, and the theoretical frame of the study, is based on Carol Lee Bacchi’s ”what´s the problem represented to be?” approach, which basic principle is that policies are filled with representations of problems and that these representations need to be examined. These problem representations are then themselves subject for scrutiny, the second step being an analysis of the texts presumptions and assumptions concerning view of man and perception of knowledge.

The results show, among other things, that a problem representations can be found in the SOU; the school system is too vague and unclear. This can be broken down to four concrete problems; the schools lack of clarity, the schools uniformity, the schools abundance of choices and the educations lack of preparation for societal partake. The view of man is an idea of the working citizen and perception of knowledge mainly being securing students employability.

The subject plan in history is a product of the SOU in several ways. The proposed solutions for the schools lack of clarity are implemented, which results in a more detailed control of the teachers. The problem with the high schools uniformity is also solved by the fact that a shorter course is given to students attending a “practical program” thus dividing the high school.

    Abstract [en]

Ringsberg-Kristineberg is an area that contains a great cultural history dating back to the 18th century. In this area the city of Växjö is hoping to develop a “cultural and creative centre”. To achieve this they have used a planning method called cultural planning, this method uses for example a place’s culture and heritage as a guide in the search for what makes a certain place unique. The project in Ringsberg-Kristineberg made me interested in finding out which cultural heritages that were included and excluded in the future “cultural and creative centre”. I found three documents that contained the planning process of the project in Ringsberg-Kristineberg which I used as a material for a quantitative content analysis and qualitative textual analysis. The aim in this study is to examine which cultural heritage has been included and excluded in the accompanying documentation of the cultural planning-process in Ringsberg-Kristineberg. This was done by answering the following questions: (1) What does the inclusion / exclusion of cultural heritage look like in the accompanying documentation of the cultural planning method? (2) Seen from a timeline perspective; does it differ what has been included / excluded if one compares the accompanying documentation? The result shows that the first and the third of three documents show the exact same result regarding what has been included and excluded. The second document differs, it includes less heritages compared to the other two documents. Some of the included heritages are cultivation and planting, the brewery industry, the old prison and the old school town.

A beautiful death – Manliness in four Japanese samurai movies

This thesis deals with the samurai and his portrayal in Japanese historic movies and what kind of messages he conveys in form of masculinity to theater audiences. Four movies were chosen, two from the 1960s and two from the 2010s. The reasoning behind this was to look at two eras of samurai movies and if possible try to see differences between them. The history of the samurai, being a man and woman in modern Japan, R.W Connell and famous Japanese authors from different time eras acted as tools to try to answer the questions in hand. The tragic hero is still a dominant figure in Japanese storytelling and duty and loyalty are his companions. In a Japanese society were the role of the man and woman have long been locked in definite roles, counter culture start to become a factor in form of for example the “herbivore man”, but the man in the samurai movie, no matter from what decade still stand with his feet firmly set in the past.

    Abstract [en]

Ship formed monuments from the Late Bronze Age on the island of Öland, southeast Sweden, have never been thoroughly dealt with in previous research, despite the fact that the region is suggested to have had a key-role in maritime trade networks. This thesis aims to address the ship formed monuments on Öland in relationship to the monuments in northern Småland and the island of Gotland. My goal is to discuss how the ship symbolism was practised during the Late Bronze Age in Scandinavia from a new perspective. I also aim to shed new light on the Bronze Age culture on Öland. I show that the ship formed monuments on Öland mark important maritime routes in the landscape leading to the core areas in the Late Bronze Age. These routes are not only linked to the trade which took place, but also to the landscape it self. I argue that the maritime movement in the landscape has helped to create and re-create the cosmology. Thus, the symbolic and practical function of the ship is tied together. Furthermore, I show that the memory connected to a mythological past has played a crucial role in the rituals leading up to the building of the monument. By integrating a circular view of time while interpreting the rituals instead of a linear one, I argue that this can be understood as a way of transforming the soul for rebirth.

    Abstract [en]

This study analyses the development of the use of unpublished source material in Swedish doctoral theses in history, 1959–2015. The results show that the proportion of theses which rely on such materials has dropped in relation to the level that existed up to and including the year 2007. From having dropped below 90% only twice during the time period 1959–2007, the average for the years 2008–2015 is 77%. There are several explanations as to why this decline in use of unpublished source material has occurred. An initial explanation is that more doctoral theses are now published within the subdiscipline of historical science, in which, for example, history didactics and uses of history are included. History didactics and uses of history have gained more ground within the overall field of historical research during the last 10 years. The next-to-lowest figures are found in the category history of ideas, culture, and opinion history; a category which during the time period 2008–2015 remained at a fairly constant share of the total number of doctoral defences in history in Sweden in relation to the situation at the beginning of the 2000s.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how children's librarians at public librarieswork to promote reading towards children between the ages of 8-12 and to see if theirreading promotion only consists of printed fiction. The research questions for the thesisare the following:

    • How do the children's librarian conduct their reading promotion work?

    • How do children's librarians use different kinds of media in the readingpromotion work?

    • Which methods do children's librarians use in the reading promotion work?

The purpose has been achieved and the research questions has been answered throughresearch interviews with children's librarians who work at public libraries. To analyzethe responses from the interviews, we have used a theory about different approachestowards reading and Jofrid Karner Smidt's theory of the librarian as a mediator ofliterature. The conclusions of the thesis are that there are great similarities in how thechildren’s librarians we have interviewed work with reading promotion and what kindof reading-promoting methods they use.

Att undervisa i informationssökning: En kvalitativ studie om hur skolbibliotekarier undervisar i informationssökning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

One of the goals in the curriculum is that the students in junior high schools must know how to seek information and how to do critical evaluations. Therefore is the aim of this bachelor thesis to examine how the school librarian work with teaching in information seeking in junior high schools. The theoretical framework that has been used is based on Limberg & Folkssons project IDOL ́s five categories. The data has collected through qualitative interviews with three school librarians in three different junior high schools in Sweden. The results shows that school librarians teach information seeking by talk about source criticism, sources, information queries, the importance of verifying information and to teach different search tips. The lessons usally was based on a basic presentation about information seeking and source criticism. The school librarian was even a part of bigger school project to teach information seeking and to support the students when they seek information. The conclusions is that this is helpful to know because the schools mission is to learn the students to be reflecting individuals. It is important that school librarians and teachers work together in this process and to contribute with each unique expertice in teaching information seeking. It is also important to support and welcome the students to the library when they need more help with information seeking.

    Isaac and Jesus: A Rabbinic Re-appropriation of a “Christian” Motif?2016Inngår i: Journal of Jewish studies, ISSN 0022-2097, E-ISSN 2056-6689, Vol. 67, nr 1, s. 102-120Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

If, as recent scholarly insights suggest, adherence to Jesus was a largely intra-Jewish affair during the first few centuries CE, it increases the likelihood of interaction and exchange of ideas between such Jesus-oriented Jews and Jews of other inclinations. This article argues that the motif of the atoning power of the death of the beloved son – developed within first-century Judaism, as evidenced by Paul and the Gospels, and embraced by Jesus-oriented groups – was later reappropriated by Rabbinic Judaism through interaction with Jesus-oriented groups with a Jewish self-identity, and applied by Rabbinic Jews to Isaac. The presence of the aqedah motif in synagogues from the third to six centuries may testify to the reappropriation by non-Jesus-oriented Jews of the motif of the atoning power of the death of the beloved son, and possibly also to the presence and impact of Jesus-oriented groups or individuals in the synagogue of late antiquity.

Jesus-Oriented Visions of Judaism in Antiquity2016Inngår i: Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis, ISSN 0582-3226, Vol. 27: Jewish Studies in the Nordic Countries Today, s. 37-60Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitions 1.27–72, the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies, and the Didascalia Apostolorum – third and fourth century-texts, which combine adherence to Jesus with Jewish law observance – would have made sense to Jews in antiquity as Jewish, although non-rabbinic visions of the history and calling of the people of Israel, and that they ought to be considered as part of the history of Judaism. Recent years have witnessed an emerging trend to reread texts previously regarded as ‘Jewish-Christian’ or ‘heretical Christian’ as Jewish texts, and as evidence of diversity within Judaism in the post-70 period. This understanding emerges from the related insights that rabbinic Judaism was not the only, or even the dominant form of Judaism during the early centuries ce, that there was no definitive early split between a well defined Christianity and an equally well defined Judaism, and that Jewish self-identity in antiquity seems to have allowed for adherence to Jesus as an option within Judaism. Abandoning the practice of using rabbinic Judaism as the sole criterion for defining Jewishness in this time period allows us to see the theologies developed by such Jesus-oriented groups with a Jewish self-identity as profoundly Jewish, although non-rabbinic, visions of the history and calling of biblical Israel.
