Hållbar utveckling: separata dimensioner eller en helhet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sustainable development consists of three different dimensions, social, economic and ecological sustainable development. Social sustainability focuses on social factors such as human rights, democracy, health, education and gender equality. Economic sustainability can be understood as economic development which does not adversely be at the expense of ecological or social sustainability. Ecological sustainability focuses on the environment where production of goods and services does not compromise the ability of ecosystems. The different dimensions concerns different issues in sustainability work and there are different ways of wiewing their relationship.

Moreover, the issue of the study is to develop an understanding of sustainable development's dimensions from a holistic perspective. The aim is also to highlight the geography teaching in today's school, where the scope of the different dimensions is prioritized. This study is of a qualitative nature. The result is based on semi structured interviews with three teachers in geography. They show that the participant's views on sustainable development differ. Two of the teachers have a view that is based in the ecological dimension while one teacher sees sustainable development from a holistic perspective. The result also shows that teacher's perceptions of sustainable development affect the scope of the dimensions of their teaching. Common to the three teachers is that the social dimension gets the least space in the teacher's teaching.

Den stereotypa religionsutövaren: En granskning av judendom och hinduism i grundskolans läromedel i religionskunskap2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay analyses how Judaism and Hinduism are portrayed in textbooks of religion. To get a width in the study three textbooks from different publishers are examined. The analysed textbooks are produced for secondary school according to the newest curriculum from 2011. The study inspects whether the books are consistent or not and if they are in what way and in which aspects the textbooks are inconsistent. It also focuses on generalizations and the problems that follow with it. The material has been divided into six categories. Then the categories are examined one by one and with the different perspectives of consistency and generalization.  The textbooks that have been studied are all inconsistent in some respect in their portrayals of the religions in question. These inconsistencies are mostly about the amount of space different aspects of both religions get. Sometimes one part of Judaism is well described while the same part is missing in the chapter about Hinduism.  Plenty of generalizations are found in the textbooks. These encourage the reader to think of the religions as more uniform than they really are. This also leads to certain people representing the entire religion. In Judaism it is the Orthodox Jews that are most often represented and in Hinduism it is Indian Hinduism that is described. This entails that the groups that are presented in the textbooks become stereotypes. Students may be led to believe that these are the only ways to practice the religious traditions.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to see how dark skinned people separate in two movies from the early 19th century. I am also going to analyze the movies from analysis questions that can be founded under the chapter called Analys. The movies I have been watching to analyze are The Birth of a Nation from year 1915 and Tarzan the Ape man from year 1932. The first movie from year 1915 is a reflection from 1860 but booth movies are reflections about the relationships between white westerner and black people from Africa in the beginning of the 1900th century. What the movies gave me as a receiver is that black people in the USA and South Africa shouldn’t be active in politics or even get the power to rule at all and it is very clear to see during the movies. According to the movies black people aren’t capable to rule in USA or in their own country in the continent Africa. The movies also show that black people should work with the cleaning and to please white people. I am going to use social representation theory in this thesis. The method that is used here is to watch the movies, write what they are about and then compare them in nine analyzing questions that is presented in the thesis.

Historyscapes in Alor: Approaching indigenous history in Eastern Indonesia2016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with history and history-making practices in Alor, a small island in southeastern Indonesia. As in all of Indonesia, the people of Alor have experienced European colonialism, and after independence, a period of centralised, authoritarian rule under the New Order (1965-1998). This regime focussed heavily on Indonesia as a united entity, and history was an instrument used in building the nation.

Democratisation and decentralisation reforms after 1998 saw interest in formulating the history of the region, village or group rather than the nation blossom. My research took place in the history boom of the 2000s when recording history was a task of urgency for many in Alor. A theoretical and methodological challenge rose from the observation of two different approaches to history, each with separate understandings of what ‘history’ is and what its sources are: ‘academic history’ and ‘indigenous history’. Academic history is concerned with time and dates; indigenous history emphasises spatiality and place. Academic history tends to rely on archival sources and is concerned with establishing chronologies of events. By contrast, indigenous history in Alor is based on oral sources, objects preserved locally, and stories rooted in the landscape. Indigenous histories may include non-human actors like dragons or sea-people living in underwater villages. In academic history, such accounts are discarded as legends or myths of no relevance to history. In this thesis, the ontological gap between these two modes of history is central. I argue that indigenous stories reveal much about historical experiences. The realism claimed by academic history is just another human construct of the past.

In the thesis, I develop the idea of a ‘historyscape’ as a methodological tool for handling indigenous histories displaying a wealth of narrators, stories and themes relating to the past. ‘Historyscapes’ is a term which unites conceptual and geographical understandings of an area or realm. A historyscape is shaped and marked off from other areas by stories and perceptions about, as well as experiences from, a shared past. Applied to Alor, the historyscape methodology reveals geographies based on the manner groups and areas connect to each other through key stories. For Alor, I establish four historyscapes. In each, an initial place-oriented reading of indigenous sources is followed by a chronological reading, in which the sources of academic history are included. The juxtaposition with academic history mainly shows the manner in which the colonial powers (Dutch and Portuguese) related to different parts of Alor at different times. From these sources periods of friction between colonial and indigenous are highlighted. The four historyscapes in Alor show variations in historical experiences within short distances, but also commonalities found across a new story-geography.

The anthropologist as heroine: contemporary interpretations of memory and heritage in an Indonesian valley2013In: Oral history in Southeast Asia: memories and fragments / [ed] Kah Seng Loh, Ernest Koh, Stephen Dobbs, New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013, 1, p. 139-158Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

In 1937 the Swiss American anthropologist Cora Du Bois (1903–91) traveled by sea from New York, via the Netherlands, to the Dutch East Indies. She was a self-conscious social scientist, or as she writes in a letter: a “lady-explorer” on her way to an isolated part of the Indonesian archipelago. Du Bois was intentionally looking for a remote place, as her research within the fashionable culture and personality school required investigations into a society little affected by Western influences. Du Bois set out on a pioneering mission; she was the first to try out methods from psychoanalysis in a non-Western setting and had been advised to choose the island of Alor for the study.

Cora Du Bois’ book, The People of Alor, published in 1944, is an important work within the field of psychological anthropology. The author would later become the first woman to teach anthropology at Harvard University. What is less well known is that Du Bois is a celebrity outside the academic world. She has become a heroine in the Abui community she studied, and is quite famous across the whole of Alor. Since Du Bois left the island in 1939, never to return, she has lived on in collective memory as a vivid figure to which hopes for the future are attached. Following her departure, a cult emerged around the anthropologist, and it is still evolving. Du Bois was incorporated into existing beliefs in benevolent magical beings.

The main question here is, how and why an American woman, who appeared—and disappeared—in the late 1930s, has reached cult status in Alor.

Den anpassningsbara bibliotekarien: Livslångt lärande kopplat till digitalisering för folkbibliotekarier2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine how librarians reflect on their own learning in their workplace, with a focus on digitization. The purpose is to get an improved understanding about how librarians feel about the need for constant development, both at an individual and organizational level, how, when and why they learn, and in what situations. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach with the data being collected through seven interviews with librarians working in public libraries in southern Sweden. To analyze the data, and also as a theoretical basis, the authors used a combination of previous research and learning theories developed by Knud Illeris. The study shows that the librarians have a positive attitude toward digitization of the libraries, that they view competence development like a natural part of their profession, that some personality traits, mainly flexibility and curiosity, are key for a successful personal development, that more time reserved for more formal education is needed on the libraries and that most of their development is occurs by informal learning in collaboration with their colleagues and library patrons. The authors hope that the results from this study can be used as a sort of guidance for library managers when is comes to making decisions concerning development on their library.

Upplevelser av att amma på offentlig plats: En kvalitativ intervjustudie2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There has been a recent debate in swedish media about wether public breastfeeding is acceptable or not. Studies from mostly North America and England has shown that women feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public. Sweden has a high rate of breastfeeding. The World Healh Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding until the child is six months. There has not been any studies approaching women’s individual experiences of breastfeeding exclusively in Sweden and therefore the purpose of this study was to explore women’s experiences of breastfeeding in public and see if the experiences changes the breastfeeding behavior. The two research questions were – what are women’s experiences of breastfeeding in public places, and are women limited geographically when they are breastfeeding?

The study has a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews as a method. Four women were interviewed and the results showed that the women mostly were comfortable breastfeeding in public but they could feel uncomfortable because they experienced that other people could be uneased with them breastfeeding in public places. Some of the women felt that they had to be discrete and therefore hid their breast. Two of the women were actively reflecting on their breastfeeding as a way to normalize public breastfeeding. The women are not directly geographically limited, but because they feel uncomfortable they can create private rooms in public places by being discrete.

Undervisning med GIS: En intervjustudie om förutsättningarna för undervisning med GIS på kommunala skolor och friskolor.2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

GIS is a relatively new phenomenon in the subject for geography. In order for the students to get a good GIS education, proper technical equipment is required. The Swedish National Agency for Education show, through statistics about the costs for elementary school, that private schools generally spend more money per student on equipment than what is the case in public schools.

The purpose of this study is to examine if the prerequisites for conducting GIS education differ between public schools and private schools. Are there noticeable differences in the education and the time spent on GIS education? To find the answers to this, six teachers from six different schools, who in some form teach GIS, where interviewed. The results show that the access to the technical devices is better at private schools. The way both school forms present the data that they have gathered is a bit different.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay, I’ve chosen to analyze and discuss the symbolic meaning and purpose of the Överhogdal-weaves dating between the years 800-1100. I have looked in to the Nordic mythology that was the Scandinavian beliefs at the time and explained the meanings of some of the motives I think contribute to the main thought behind the weaves. To help me get some more understanding of the motives I’ve also looked at the picture stones from Gotland and compared them to the weaves.

Folkmajoritetens upphöjda tankesätt[…]: En presshistorisk undersökning av den konservativa pressens opinionsbildning rörande representationsreformen de fyra sista månaderna år 18652017Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In 1865 the four national estates in Sweden voted to reform the national representation to a bicameral parliament. This reform was preceded by a rise in liberal sentiment in the country, especially among the emerging middle class. The vote was not unanomous however and some newspapers backed up the more conservative representatives that were hesitant to pass the reform. Three of these conservative papers have been examined and analysed, to identify the arguments against the reform that were presented, and how they viewed the reform. The objections that were vocalized by the papers mainly focused on the upheaval the reform was feared to cause. The liberal press was considered misleading and hypocritical, when discussing the issue. The newspapers did not deny the problems with the current representation, instead they prefered the changes to be smaller and more gradual, except for Nya Dagligt Allehanda, which is positive to the new change. One suggestion to an alternative representation is a system based on a class system, instead of income. The liberal reformers are seen as a threat to stability and are described as revolutionary more than once. A major fear regarding the reform was that the second chamber would facilitate mobrule in place of the current representation. Earlier works in the area have mainly focused on the reformers, but this work shows their sceptical, conservative counterparts.

Inför vår herre är vi alla smålänningar: Landskapsidentitet och historiebruk kring framstående småländska personer2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When history is discussed, it is commonly done in a national or international setting. The regional or local levels are often not discussed. This essay wills therefore investigate how the regional identity in the province of Småland is represented as pertaining to a select few historically significant individuals i.e. Nils Dacke, Carl von Linnaeus, Esaias Tegnér, Elin Wägner, Vilhelm Moberg & Astrid Lindgren.  Narrative identity and history usage are the main theoretical standpoints of this investigation. The method consists of qualitative text analysis applied to a number of examples of history usage tied to the select individuals. The sources used are mainly online information targeted at visitors. The results show a varying degree of impact on the provincial history usage, with Dacke, Lindgren and Moberg being clearly linked to “Småland” identity, while the other individuals where less tied to the region specifically.  The identity expressed in the media examined was well in line with what can be found in earlier works on regional history and identity in Småland.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the research in this essay was to study the messages from the Swedish Social democratic party in their election films from 1930, 1954, 1962 and 1994, and in their election posters from 1930, 1954 and 1962. The aim was to understand what messages the party transmitted, and to see what changes there has been over time. Both a rhetorical analysis with focus on the use of ethos, pathos and logos as well as a content analysis have been used as methods for this study.

The results have shown that some themes are reappearing in several of the years, such as collaborations and cooperatives. Another theme, employment, is important in both the election film from 1930 and from 1994, but can in opposite of the collaboration/cooperatives theme be strongly connected to events taking part at the same time as the film was made.

There has also been a distinct transformation in genre and length of the films. In 1930 and 1954, the films are made as real motion picture film, while the one from 1962 reminds more of a documentary and the film from 1994 looks like a modern advertising film. The first film was about 40 minutes long, and by the years they seem to have gotten only got shorter and shorter. The film from 1994 is only 30 seconds long.

Vi tysta kväkare pratar så gärna.: En studie om svenska kväkares tystnad och tal2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative research study aims to investigate how eight members of the Society of Friends (also known as Quakers) experience a divine presence in their Meeting for Worship. The purpose is also to find out how their identity as Quakers has been created, and to see how they look at their Meeting of Worship when it comes to ritual as a concept.

The method used in this study is individual, semi-structured interviews and observations of Meeting of Worship. The results show a relatively homogeneous group of individuals from a secular upbringing who as adults sought out a community where silence is appreciated and used to achieve an experience of a divine presence. Berger and Luckmann's theories of socialization have been applied to the results and the discussion reveals how the secondary socialization has been essential in the process of forming the individual into being a Quaker. There is however one exception, in the form of one participant who grew up in the Society of Friends. Catherine Bell’s ritual theory, that no ritual can be defined without its context, can be applied to the Quaker’s view of a ritual. The view Bell has on rituals can be used to understand the views shared by the participants in the study.

Vad var egentligen problemet?: en analys av SOU Framtidsvägen och ämnesplanen i historia2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze how problems are represented within SOU 2008:27. Further more, the aim is to analyze how the new subject plan for history can bee seen as a product of this document. The method used, and the theoretical frame of the study, is based on Carol Lee Bacchi’s ”what´s the problem represented to be?” approach, which basic principle is that policies are filled with representations of problems and that these representations need to be examined. These problem representations are then themselves subject for scrutiny, the second step being an analysis of the texts presumptions and assumptions concerning view of man and perception of knowledge.

The results show, among other things, that a problem representations can be found in the SOU; the school system is too vague and unclear. This can be broken down to four concrete problems; the schools lack of clarity, the schools uniformity, the schools abundance of choices and the educations lack of preparation for societal partake. The view of man is an idea of the working citizen and perception of knowledge mainly being securing students employability.

The subject plan in history is a product of the SOU in several ways. The proposed solutions for the schools lack of clarity are implemented, which results in a more detailed control of the teachers. The problem with the high schools uniformity is also solved by the fact that a shorter course is given to students attending a “practical program” thus dividing the high school.

    Abstract [en]

Ringsberg-Kristineberg is an area that contains a great cultural history dating back to the 18th century. In this area the city of Växjö is hoping to develop a “cultural and creative centre”. To achieve this they have used a planning method called cultural planning, this method uses for example a place’s culture and heritage as a guide in the search for what makes a certain place unique. The project in Ringsberg-Kristineberg made me interested in finding out which cultural heritages that were included and excluded in the future “cultural and creative centre”. I found three documents that contained the planning process of the project in Ringsberg-Kristineberg which I used as a material for a quantitative content analysis and qualitative textual analysis. The aim in this study is to examine which cultural heritage has been included and excluded in the accompanying documentation of the cultural planning-process in Ringsberg-Kristineberg. This was done by answering the following questions: (1) What does the inclusion / exclusion of cultural heritage look like in the accompanying documentation of the cultural planning method? (2) Seen from a timeline perspective; does it differ what has been included / excluded if one compares the accompanying documentation? The result shows that the first and the third of three documents show the exact same result regarding what has been included and excluded. The second document differs, it includes less heritages compared to the other two documents. Some of the included heritages are cultivation and planting, the brewery industry, the old prison and the old school town.

Due to the essay range, it only focuses on the description of the civil war in former Yugoslavia. The schoolbooks have been written according to the guidelines of the newest curriculum plan (Lgr 2011). The results of this dissertation show how there are significant differences between the schoolbooks. Key actors in the wars and their description differ between the books. Another difference is the commencement year of the conflict and the number over refugees accounted for. One important finding made, is the degree of neutrality distinguishes from book to book. One of them have chosen to exclude all the actors and countries while other books chooses to include them

Abstract: Schleswig the pearl of Denmark

This essay analyzes the thoughts and  explores the experiences of a Swedish soldier during the Second Schleswig war and explores the views of Axel Edvard Wester a Swedish officer that was voluntarily recruited in the Danish army to fight against the Prussians and defend what he recognized as a part of Denmark, the region of Schleswig. His thoughts about the war and how he describes it will be a question to be answered as well as his motivation to participate in the war on Denmark’s side. Scandinavism as an ideology during the time was strong and how can we see how its visible in his memoir.

Axel Edvard described himself as a very emotional man with strong bonds to Denmark and the Danish people which he saw as brothers to him. As a soldier he described himself as loyal and with a big feeling of responsibility in taking care of his men in the role as an officer. He also presented ideals in which he described his longing for battle while his comrades were suffering.

The results have shown that Axel Edvard motivation to go in as volunteer in the war depends a lot on the sense of feeling important and being a part of a community. The impression is that Axel Edvard had a mindset of how it was being a soldier and wanted to experience it in real life. He also recognized Schleswig as a part of Denmark and saw that as a reason to volunteer for Denmark during the second Schleswig war.

Scandinavism isn’t showed as much as expected but it lights through in a few places in the memoir beside nationalism. The Scandinavism was often showed via his way to talk about his Danish comrades and Denmark. During his time in prison he changed his way of writing to a much more nationalistic way.

    Abstract

A beautiful death – Manliness in four Japanese samurai movies

This thesis deals with the samurai and his portrayal in Japanese historic movies and what kind of messages he conveys in form of masculinity to theater audiences. Four movies were chosen, two from the 1960s and two from the 2010s. The reasoning behind this was to look at two eras of samurai movies and if possible try to see differences between them. The history of the samurai, being a man and woman in modern Japan, R.W Connell and famous Japanese authors from different time eras acted as tools to try to answer the questions in hand. The tragic hero is still a dominant figure in Japanese storytelling and duty and loyalty are his companions. In a Japanese society were the role of the man and woman have long been locked in definite roles, counter culture start to become a factor in form of for example the “herbivore man”, but the man in the samurai movie, no matter from what decade still stand with his feet firmly set in the past.

    Abstract [en]

Ship formed monuments from the Late Bronze Age on the island of Öland, southeast Sweden, have never been thoroughly dealt with in previous research, despite the fact that the region is suggested to have had a key-role in maritime trade networks. This thesis aims to address the ship formed monuments on Öland in relationship to the monuments in northern Småland and the island of Gotland. My goal is to discuss how the ship symbolism was practised during the Late Bronze Age in Scandinavia from a new perspective. I also aim to shed new light on the Bronze Age culture on Öland. I show that the ship formed monuments on Öland mark important maritime routes in the landscape leading to the core areas in the Late Bronze Age. These routes are not only linked to the trade which took place, but also to the landscape it self. I argue that the maritime movement in the landscape has helped to create and re-create the cosmology. Thus, the symbolic and practical function of the ship is tied together. Furthermore, I show that the memory connected to a mythological past has played a crucial role in the rituals leading up to the building of the monument. By integrating a circular view of time while interpreting the rituals instead of a linear one, I argue that this can be understood as a way of transforming the soul for rebirth.

Historians and Their Sources: The use of unpublished source material in Swedish doctoral theses in history, 1959-2015, and in student bachelor's and master's theses, 2010-20152018In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 43, no 3, p. 365-386Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study analyses the development of the use of unpublished source material in Swedish doctoral theses in history, 1959–2015. The results show that the proportion of theses which rely on such materials has dropped in relation to the level that existed up to and including the year 2007. From having dropped below 90% only twice during the time period 1959–2007, the average for the years 2008–2015 is 77%. There are several explanations as to why this decline in use of unpublished source material has occurred. An initial explanation is that more doctoral theses are now published within the subdiscipline of historical science, in which, for example, history didactics and uses of history are included. History didactics and uses of history have gained more ground within the overall field of historical research during the last 10 years. The next-to-lowest figures are found in the category history of ideas, culture, and opinion history; a category which during the time period 2008–2015 remained at a fairly constant share of the total number of doctoral defences in history in Sweden in relation to the situation at the beginning of the 2000s.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to investigate the subjective perception of religious science teachers on the effect of their working methods to counteract religious intolerance among students. To achieve the result, I have been using the method of semi-structured conversation interviews with religious science teachers working in Kronoberg county. With the help from an interview guide, the intention is to understand the world of the respondents, from their point of view. The answers provided from each interview went through a thematic content analysis in order to identify any similarities and differences among the respondents.

The result exposed that all teachers had been through religious intolerance in their classes, and that their efforts to counteract the problem had shown a positive effect. All teachers had been able to see results from their work based on different teaching scenarios due to active efforts they made. All teachers succeed to acknowledge the tolerance requirements from the schools regulatory document, even though they associated it to the basic values, which is not wrong. My hypothesis that teachers would show negative tendencies as the effect of their practice was wrong. The effect is, as a matter of fact, positive, but all respondents believe that the composition of how teachers obtain knowledge about handling the issue needs to be modified. Today it is all about individual initiative. The respondents expressed their concerns about this not being a sustainable system, even though the result is positive.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how children's librarians at public librarieswork to promote reading towards children between the ages of 8-12 and to see if theirreading promotion only consists of printed fiction. The research questions for the thesisare the following:

    • How do the children's librarian conduct their reading promotion work?

    • How do children's librarians use different kinds of media in the readingpromotion work?

    • Which methods do children's librarians use in the reading promotion work?

The purpose has been achieved and the research questions has been answered throughresearch interviews with children's librarians who work at public libraries. To analyzethe responses from the interviews, we have used a theory about different approachestowards reading and Jofrid Karner Smidt's theory of the librarian as a mediator ofliterature. The conclusions of the thesis are that there are great similarities in how thechildren’s librarians we have interviewed work with reading promotion and what kindof reading-promoting methods they use.

    Abstract [en]

One of the goals in the curriculum is that the students in junior high schools must know how to seek information and how to do critical evaluations. Therefore is the aim of this bachelor thesis to examine how the school librarian work with teaching in information seeking in junior high schools. The theoretical framework that has been used is based on Limberg & Folkssons project IDOL ́s five categories. The data has collected through qualitative interviews with three school librarians in three different junior high schools in Sweden. The results shows that school librarians teach information seeking by talk about source criticism, sources, information queries, the importance of verifying information and to teach different search tips. The lessons usally was based on a basic presentation about information seeking and source criticism. The school librarian was even a part of bigger school project to teach information seeking and to support the students when they seek information. The conclusions is that this is helpful to know because the schools mission is to learn the students to be reflecting individuals. It is important that school librarians and teachers work together in this process and to contribute with each unique expertice in teaching information seeking. It is also important to support and welcome the students to the library when they need more help with information seeking.

    Isaac and Jesus: A Rabbinic Re-appropriation of a “Christian” Motif?2016In: Journal of Jewish studies, ISSN 0022-2097, E-ISSN 2056-6689, Vol. 67, no 1, p. 102-120Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

If, as recent scholarly insights suggest, adherence to Jesus was a largely intra-Jewish affair during the first few centuries CE, it increases the likelihood of interaction and exchange of ideas between such Jesus-oriented Jews and Jews of other inclinations. This article argues that the motif of the atoning power of the death of the beloved son – developed within first-century Judaism, as evidenced by Paul and the Gospels, and embraced by Jesus-oriented groups – was later reappropriated by Rabbinic Judaism through interaction with Jesus-oriented groups with a Jewish self-identity, and applied by Rabbinic Jews to Isaac. The presence of the aqedah motif in synagogues from the third to six centuries may testify to the reappropriation by non-Jesus-oriented Jews of the motif of the atoning power of the death of the beloved son, and possibly also to the presence and impact of Jesus-oriented groups or individuals in the synagogue of late antiquity.

Jesus-Oriented Visions of Judaism in Antiquity2016In: Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis, ISSN 0582-3226, Vol. 27: Jewish Studies in the Nordic Countries Today, p. 37-60Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitions 1.27–72, the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies, and the Didascalia Apostolorum – third and fourth century-texts, which combine adherence to Jesus with Jewish law observance – would have made sense to Jews in antiquity as Jewish, although non-rabbinic visions of the history and calling of the people of Israel, and that they ought to be considered as part of the history of Judaism. Recent years have witnessed an emerging trend to reread texts previously regarded as ‘Jewish-Christian’ or ‘heretical Christian’ as Jewish texts, and as evidence of diversity within Judaism in the post-70 period. This understanding emerges from the related insights that rabbinic Judaism was not the only, or even the dominant form of Judaism during the early centuries ce, that there was no definitive early split between a well defined Christianity and an equally well defined Judaism, and that Jewish self-identity in antiquity seems to have allowed for adherence to Jesus as an option within Judaism. Abandoning the practice of using rabbinic Judaism as the sole criterion for defining Jewishness in this time period allows us to see the theologies developed by such Jesus-oriented groups with a Jewish self-identity as profoundly Jewish, although non-rabbinic, visions of the history and calling of biblical Israel.

Remembering slavery: The mobilization of social and collective memory of slavery in the 21st century2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of the study is to investigate how a social and collective memory is mobilized by the directors’ depiction of ethnicity and gender roles from a post- colonial and gender perspective. The thesis focuses on how ethnicity and gender roles are depicted in each movie and how this results in a mobilization of a social and collective memory. The results show that Django Unchained mobilizes a memory by its use of the invective nigger and iconic acts of slavery, such as whipping and cotton picking. From a gender perspective, the results show that men worked with jobs that required more strength, compared to the jobs of women and thus mobilizes a memory of how we remember the gender roles of slaves. Nevertheless, these memories can result in traumas and to recover from them, memories must be revisited.

Similarly, yet differently, the results show that 12 Years a Slave mobilizes a memory by its use of the invective nigger and by the use of songs that solidified the hierarchy present during slavery. In other words, these songs were used to exhibit the level of supremacy Caucasians possessed from a post-colonial perspective.

The conclusion drawn in the study is that 12 Years a Slave, as a historical source, provides audiences with considerably more authenticity compared to Django Unchained. Therefore an individual might feel as if he or she has lived the life of Solomon Northup and experienced and endured everything he did.

    Abstract [en]

The workobligations and the form of salary for the workers at Johannishus estate is the main objective of this essay. Knowledge about those subjects was obtained through the use of source material from Johannishus estates private archive. Description of the estate and its owners is included to give a perspective of the place of employment and the employer. A personal description of the lives for the three most prominent working klasses is included through material written by a woman formely employed at Johannishus. The workers was not susceptible for moving which gives an inclination that they were treated well. Between the years that has been a part of this reserch the amount of daylabor that the workers were obliged to do does not differ in any evident way. Only the later year have a smaller distribution because of the workhour laws that changed some of the conditions of the worker. Many of these workers were paid in provisions and other necessities rather than a salary consisting of money.

    Abstract [en]

Växjö is a medium-sized town situated in the centre of the county Småland in Sweden with a good infrastructure and logistics and with a university that encourages cooperation with private and public companies. It is in this town that our case study of Småland Airport will take place. The aim of this study is to examine in which way the program of Library and Information Science at the Linnaeus University in Växjö offers knowledge that can be relevant for the staff at the airport in Växjö - Småland Airport. Using Wilsons model as our theoretical framework we examine how these two align with each other and by using a matrix that we ourselves elaborated in our analysis, we provide a clear picture of how the comparability two places comparability is represented. The result shows that there are compatible aspects to the Småland Aiports needs and what the program of Library and Information Science has to offer. We conclude that areas such as knowledge management, document management and good reception are similar.

Lärobokshinduism: En studie om hur hinduism framställs i skolböcker för gymnasieskolan mellan åren 1998-2013.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay analyses how Hinduism is portrayed within different textbooks produced for students attending senior high school in Sweden, spanning the years of 1998 until 2013. The analysis itself aims to identify any orientalist tendencies within the textbooks as well as how gender is portrayed. The textbooks are analysed from a set of criteria, namely, content, visual text, gender and text analysis. The analysis also examines what changes occur in regards to how textbooks portray Hinduism in the courses Religion A and Religion 1. Textbooks constitute a dominant part of the Swedish education system which makes the findings of this essay relevant and important for educators. The theory which acts as a foundation for this essay has been adapted from Edward Said’s Orientalism. Said argues that Orientalism is a political strategy which uses stereotypical descriptions of Hinduism to show the strength and superiority of the West. The textbooks studied here contain Orientalist tendencies to a varying degree and  Hinduism as a religion is portrayed in a simplistic manner throughout. Hinduism is also portrayed in sharp contrast to the structure of western society as a primitive religion in a way that is not fully consistent with how Hinduism is practiced in India and around the world today. There are tendencies toward latent orientalist perspectives. The gender perspective in regards to actual text is roughly unchanged throughout all the material used in the study. However, when viewing the images contained within the material, changes have been dramatic and the more recent textbooks now lean towards being dominated by illustrations of females as opposed to males.  The major change in discourse took place between the textbooks connected to Religion A and the books connected to Religion 1. There were significantly less orientalist tendencies present in the textbooks adapted to Religion 1 and a clear pattern could be discerned. Where orientalist tendencies had been diminished the authors had instead attached explanations to the text and expanded upon the subject-matter enabling the reader to gain a greater understanding of what everyday life as a Hindu entails. Another change which could be found in the analysis is that recent textbooks had adapted its subject-matter to conform to how the realities of Hinduism in India and the rest of the world actually look like today. The outdated and stereotypical attributes previously attached to Hinduism based on a western viewpoint have thus faded or been replaced altogether.

Scientific publications as boundary objects: theorising the intersection of classification and research evaluation2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. When using bibliometrics for research evaluation, the classification of research fields is an issue of great importance. The purpose of this paper is to outline a brief theoretical framework for analysing the role of classification in research evaluation practices.

Theory. Taking departure in the concept of ‘boundary objects’ we develop a theoretical framework for analyses of how scientific publications negotiate between different social worlds. Moreover, by adding the perspective of large evaluative infrastructures our study seeks to highlight tensions between local practices and global standards.

Empirical example. One scientific article was analysed in terms of the different ways it can be classified on author and affiliation levels, on a documental level, and on a bureaucratic level.

Discussion. Publications are boundary objects residing between social worlds: the context of communication and the context of evaluation. Tensions between social worlds become apparent in infrastructures, which aims to serve the demands both of communication and of evaluation.

How implementation of bibliometric practice affects the role of academic libraries2013In: Journal of Librarianship and Information Science, ISSN 0961-0006, E-ISSN 1741-6477, Vol. 45, no 4, p. 316-322Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses potential consequences of implementing bibliometrics as an institutionalized practice in academic libraries. Resultsare reported from a survey among libraries in Sweden with organized bibliometric activities. Incorporating bibliometric activities is oneway of redefining and widening the role of the library. Implementation of bibliometric practice is motivated by ambitions to providemore complete scholarly communication-related services, as well as to increase the visibility and status of libraries. Underlying reasonsare professional competencies such as metadata and bibliographic database management; and bibliometrics being strong within libraryand information science. Incorporating bibliometrics in academic libraries is also seen as a way of widening the professional profile oflibrarianship. The new role should, however, also be considered from the viewpoint of potential changes in how academic libraries areperceived when incorporating a monitoring function through bibliometric analyses of research performance in addition to traditionalservice-oriented functions.

this study is to throw light on the fashion during world war I through studying

they are put in relation to the social functions of fashion and the conditions of

Kröningsceremonier och demokratiseringen: Förändringen av svenska kröningsceremonier mellan 1772 och 18732017Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a study of Swedish coronation ceremonies in the nineteenth century. The purpose is to answer questions about how coronations where used to demonstrate and legitimise power, and how these ceremonies where changed when the structure of power went through the dramatic changes of the nineteenth century. The coronations that I have chosen to study for this essay starts with the coronation of Gustav III in 1772, then Charles XIV John in 1818, Oscar I in 1844 and the last coronation in Sweden: Oscar II’s in 1873. The essay also makes connections to Gustav V’s choice not to have a coronation when he became king of Sweden in 1907, a choice that marked the very end of coronations in swedish history.

The result of this study shows the connection between coronations and political power, and it supports the theory that ceremony and power where in fact very close. It shows how the coronation ceremonies represents a social structure and a distribution of power, which leads to the conclusion that when these two changes so does the ceremonies. Eventually the change of society reached a level where the coronation ceremonies became obsolete as it could not be adapted to the new structure of power.

    Abstract [en]

On January 1, 2014 a legislative amendment to the former National Heritage Act (1988: 950) was put in action, one of the new amendments that was conceived in what is now called Culture Environmental Act (1988: 950). The change made it possible for the County Councils to enforce that the results associated with archaeological research would be conveyed to the public.

The present work is a case study aiming to see what kind of impact this amendment has had on the archaeological specifications and offer invitations for archaeological investigations.

The main questions for the work are:

    • What kind of mediation is being required by the County Councils?
    • Why was the law changed?
    • Is there a difference in this respect between different counties?
    • Has there been any noticable change in practice in this respect after the amendment introduction?

This study aims to answer these questions and throughout it also give you as a reader information about the history behind the changes as well as what impact the changes has had on archaeological investigations and the mediated results to the public. The aim is also to show the different ways that archaelogy is communicated and to whom.

Re-contextualising development in teaching school geography: Teachers' story in Sweden and China2016In: Eurogeo conference 2016, Malaga, 2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Geography as a school subject varies in different nations. This comparative study is based on legitimation code analysis of the two countries’ Geography National Curriculum in compulsory secondary education (Year7-9) respectively. It follows with a school case study on Chinese and Swedish teachers' interpretation about development topic in their teaching, which is the process of re-contextualisation in practical classroom when transforming the idea on the paper to action in teaching. The main outcomes show how knowledge is described in the curriculum standards, and the teachers' case study gives insight in how and in what ways we could transform the hypothesis to practice, thus enhance the view of knowledge in the curriculum.

Ett bruk i förfall: En studie av relationerna mellan Huseby bruk och dess lokala fackföreningar under nedgångsperioden 1947-19572017Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Huseby bruk was a large isolated industry that bloomed during the 19th century and was located in the county of Småland, Sweden. It was a large industry focused on many different areas and in large it was self-sufficient. Like many other industries at the time Huseby bruk was lead by a patriarchal leader named Joseph Stephens who died in 1934. At this time many Swedish industries were in decline due to modernization and labour unions on the rise. The first local union on Huseby bruk officially started in 1947. After Joseph Stephens death the oldest daughter Florence Stephens took over the industry and lead it until 1957. The main focus of this study has been to look at the relations between the local labour unions and the managing directors during the period 1947-1957. Further the study has aimed to look at how conflicts between the unions and the managers were handled and if the unions were conscious of the downturn period that the industry was experiencing. Finally the study has looked at how the local labour unions interacted with other unions. The results of the study has shown that the patriarchal relations between worker and manager had ceased to exist. Instead the workers depended more upon the larger unions. The conflicts had an hierarchic order where the local union first tried to solve the conflict themselves before seeking help from larger unions. The local unions were conscious of the downturn period from which I have drawn the conclusion that the unions had a increased understanding for the conflicts they had with Huseby bruk.

Bildens betydelse för elevers inlärning: En läromedelsanalys av fyra läromedel i historia från Lgr 69 till Lgr 112019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
