Place names, Landscape and Assembly Sites in Skåne, Sweden2015In: Journal of the North Atlantic, ISSN 1935-1984, E-ISSN 1935-1933, Vol. 8, no sp8, p. 82-92Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper discusses a particular type of assembly site in medieval and presumably even older times for the exercise of justice in the province of Skåne (Scania) in southern Sweden (Scandinavian medieval: approx. AD 1050–1520). Through a close and detailed consideration of historical and antiquarian research focused around two key landscape case studies—Torna hundred and Vemmenhög hundred—this study challenges long-established models of assembly formation, location, and naming. The paper concludes by providing an entirely new perspective on what place-names associated with legal practice and judicial administration might signal about the genesis and organization of early medieval systems of power and justice.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is intended to illustrate the norms and values which can be deduced from the notifier Catarina Andersdotter and recorded by Gunnar-Olof Hyltén-Cavallius. Reflects the legends of the peasant culture and life during the later part of 1700´s and early 1800´s.

In the background material, I have assumed the following conditions of life; faith, love, work and children. Since Hyltén-Cavallius is our filter between us and the notifier, I have examined his life and incorporated events that may be of interest of the essay. Catarina Andersdotter´s life is described in the essay to show the factors and living conditions in her life that influenced her choice of stories.

The environment of the commons over time period is described for the purpose of the variables of the legends. Legends have been qualitatively and quantitatively investigated.

The essay shows that most of the legends deal with mytical world and its creatures as well as the interaction with humans. People are described mainly in situation dealing with everyday task of the country. The essay shows the connection between folklore and Christian world view.

To obtain deeper and more adequate pictures of the values and norms among the commons during the time period a wide range of sources need to be used.

Krigsbarn i Alvesta: En studie av hur folkskolan i Alvestabygden såg på finska krigsbarn åren 1941-1945.2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In 1924 a new law stated that every Swedish municipality had to create one authority containing al the boards that handled child issues. Before 1924 children often was put into fostercare without supervision or auctioned out to the lowest bidders and was used as farmworkers or for housekeeping. This essay will adress the fact that the authorities diden´t always know how well or unwell the children was being treated in fostercare. Many times people with good social and economic status could demand having a fosterchild without the authorities asking to many questions. With the material from Ljungbys local archives containing documents from the early 20th century, newspaper articales and other research this essay will compare and discuss how the authorities acted in different cases based on gender and social class. In this discussion we will focus manly on the children but also on the biologicalparents, the fosterparents and the members of the childrensboard. We will discuss if the authorities really did treat people different in mather of the fact that they are male, female, poor or rich.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to analyse how and why culture and tradition is created and maintained within a minor student society at a Swedish university by looking at its history. The West Coast Nation student society provided the material which was subsequently analysed and three sociological perspectives were applied in order to give the study a theoretical base. In order to investigate the purpose of the society, durkheimian theories on functionalism were applied. Moreover, Bourdieu’s thoughts on social fields were used as well as Elias’ theories on the established and the outsiders. The results indicate that the purpose of a student society of this sort is to provide the students with a culture and a group with which they may identify. From a historical perspective, the West Coast Nation seems to have had an increase in members steadily from the early 90’s on, but at the start of the 21st century, the numbers dwindled, something which had as a result that a process of professionalization was begun. Furthermore, the society displayed strong intentions of establishing and maintaining continuity, which may be a result of the nation having trouble keeping members and board members since students, who form the basis of the society, leave the university after a few years.

    Abstract [sv]

Contract Archaeology and Sustainable Development: Between Policy and Practice2018Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of my PhD work is to study how heritage and archaeological knowledge can be applied in practice to meet the aims of Agenda 2030, in particular goal no.11 Sustainable cities and communities. This licentiate thesis serves to provide a foundation for this research.

Here, I investigate how Swedish contract archaeology can contribute to sustainable development. First, I analyse how government policy and regulations convey the relation between sustainable development and contract archaeology in practice, and examine how professionals within the contract archaeological system see that they can work with sustainability issues in practice. The results show that there is a gap between policy and practice which is mainly connected to the understanding of sustainable development as a concept and not a practice. This may potentially limit Swedish contract archaeology´s ability to play an active role in sustainability practice.

In a case study, I research a modern urban planning project in Kalmar, Valnötsträdet, where contract archaeology played a decisive role in the planning process. By analysing the project process from a sustainability perspective and interviewing participants, I come to the conclusion that contract archaeology´s significant role in the project was due to the ability of individual persons to see the value of using a holistic working method and archaeological knowledge to strengthen the planning process. However, the results also show that archaeology and archaeological heritage have an inherent attraction that can cause imbalances between values in a manner that potentially affects sustainable urban development if not taken into account and managed throughout the process.

Although research has established that heritage and archaeology has an important role to play in the achievement of environmental, economic and social sustainability, there are still few practical examples of this. The results of this licentiate thesis point to the fact that the sector still needs to develop an understanding of sustainability as a practice in order for this to change.

    Abstract [en]

Many archaeologists have been intrigued by how often symbolic houses of varying forms are used on the burialgrounds of the Scandinavian Bronze Age. Some scholars even claim that to deal with the dead did not mean to set them apart from the world of the living during this period. Since several examples show that there seem to be an active connection between the ship-setting and different types of symbolic houses, this study seek to demonstrate and interpret how the ideology behind these symbols vary between three regionally different Swedish areas: Halland, Småland and Gotland. The purpose is to show that the way chosen to shape the symbols materially not only had fundamental impact on the organization of the burialground itself, but also on how the surrounding world came to comprenhend and use them. This study suggests that even though the special shapes of the graves and the gravefield itself can carry meaning, the materialization of the monuments can be interpreted as incorporated in a practice of remembrance in where the individual shaping of the grave most probably formed part of a greater story.

    Abstract [en]

This essay takes a look at which gender norms and stereotypes can be found in high-school history textbooks, and the values that they pass on to the students who read them. By analysing the textbooks from both a text and image perspective, a rounded view of the values and ideals concerning power and gender that the books contain can be seen. The use of gender theory gives the essay a clear theoretical framework through which the material is analysed.

The result showed that the history textbooks over all contained an outdated view of gender roles and gender dynamics. There was a clear overrepresentation of men in both the text and the pictures throughout the books, and the language used created a hierarchy between men and women.  This in turn sends outdated messages to students, messages which may not fit the current ideal of gender equality.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to look at the folktales surrounding the Swedish cunning folk to see how these reflect the society in which they were told. By analysing these folktales I have attempted to find patterns in how people spoke of the cunning folk in different situations in life. I have also looked at how these folktales can be said to mirror the societal structures of their day. What people say about the cunning folk can show the mentality of the society in which these stories were told. This in turn can give a view in to the structures of society as these are the foundations for the collective mentality.

By analysing the material I have come to the conclusion that people spoke of the cunning folk in both positive and negative ways. Their knowledge and skill were praised whilst their persons were treated with suspicion. These folktales also clearly mirror the societal structures of the day by showing where the cunning folk were needed and could thrive due to structural societal needs.

Narratives about Sweden: Collecting processes about and with persons categorized as immigrants at the Nordic Museum in Sweden i the twentieth and twnty-first centuries2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we will shortly present the design of a research project under construction as well as the results and reflections from a minor pre-study/analysis.The history of Sweden as a country of immigration has been written almost exclusively from the Swedish state’s perspective. The diverse experiences, that immigrant women and men have had in meetings with “Sweden” at different times lacks its place in the contemporary writing of history. Never before have their stories been systematically compiled and analyzed as a part of and a point of departure for writing Swedish (immigration) history. Neither have there been any studies over time nor contexts on how the Swedish self-image(s) has changed in relation to immigrated people and how this self-image is related to the inclusion or exclusion of the immigrants. In the project we are aiming at writing a multivocal Swedish (immigration) history based on immigrants’ narratives about Sweden. This is done through a survey of all and a study of some selected collections of collected and archived interviews with persons in Sweden categorized as immigrants from different times and places. These “collections of immigrant narratives” are spread all over Sweden and have been collected by different museums, archives and other “memory institutions” with diverse purposes, in different times and in different local contexts. In the project we are illuminating questions as when, where, why and by which institution, archive or museum narratives from different individuals or groups have been collected? Moreover, in the research project we investigate both the contexts of the collections and the contents of the individual interviews/ life stories. Concerning the analysis of the individual interviews we are interested in analyzing who is asked to and how are the interviewees asked to tell their life story? What questions are they asked to answer? What subjects are they asked to reflect and narrate about? However, we also look upon the interviews/life stories as retrospective narratives on what it was like to come to Sweden at a specific time and to a specific place. In the paper our research interests revolve around both the contexts of the different collections and issues of representation. Concerning the aspect of representation, our will is to investigate who is selected to represent at different times and places? And what are the interviewees supposed to be representing? Accordingly, we assert that how and what the persons actually narrate about their experiences and lives imply epistemological and methodological questions. We are using the findings in a minor pre-study as a point of departure for the paper. The paper will address and reflect our thoughts and problems with working with materials (narratives, interviews and life stories) that have been created, collected and archived by different “memory institutions” in Sweden. Furthermore, the paper will address ethical perspectives and methodological challenges on (re)presenting selves and others, both how this (re)presentation is done in archives as well as in the texts we write as historians from our uses and analysis of the materials in the collections/archives.

Narratives from multi-cultural Sweden: posittioning and identification in immigrant collections at the archive of the Nordic Museum 1970-20152016In: Oral history, ISSN 0143-0955, Vol. 44, no 2, p. 81-90Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is inspired by a cultural approach to oral history which argues that narrators draw on public discourses in constructing narratives for an audience. It also contributes to debates in oral history on the re-use of archived interviews, by arguing that the oral historian has to consider how memory institutions create and preserve oral history collections, and contribute to the shaping of narra tives of history. By investigating positioning and identification in immigrant collections at the archive of the Nordic Museum from 1970-2015, the article also engages with debates in oral history about collec tive and individual remembering by discussing how the individual narrators can resist and transform narratives of the museum about categories such as immigrants, Swedes and Swedishness.

    Abstract [en]

The study's aim is to implement a textbook analysis and examine how women are described in history textbooks for high school and in the curriculums Lgy 70, Lpf 94 and Gy 11. The study has a gender perspective and the study's purpose is to make a comparative study and compare textbooks with the current curriculum and compare the results with each other to see if there has been any change over time. The survey's material is three editions of Alla tiders historia from Gleerups förlag. The study refers to editions from 1989, 1996 and 2011. General parts from Lgy 70, Lpf 94 and Gy 11 are also central for my study. The general curriculum of history from 1981, the course Historia A in Lpf 94 and Historia 1b in Gy 11 are also studied. The study shows that the role of women doesn’t get much space in textbooks and when women are mentioned explicitly, it’s mainly through illustrations or through texts of statement representation. The role of women has not been treated much in governing documents but equality between men and women is something that is common. The study shows that the governing documents interact with the curricula in a relatively large range, although this varies between the different editions. The results demonstrate that there has been a change over time in administrative documents and textbooks. Content and design have changed based on the societal context in which they were designed. The study shows that men are the norm and men are mentioned more than women, both in textbooks and curriculum.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to unfold and explain the historical Swedish view upon the Samic people. The fundamental question asked is: ”In which manner, or manners, are the Samic people in the so called Lappmarkerna portrayed by Swedish missionaries during the 17th century?

The study makes use of five Swedish missionaries’ written accounts of their travels in Lappmarkerna during the 17th century. The primary sources are examined through a hermeneutic method and the results are analyzed from a postcolonial theoretical framework based mostly on Edward Said’s Orientalism and Ania Loomba’s Colonialism/postcolonialism.

The results unfold a view of the Samic people as indeed something other than the rest of the Swedes. The Samic people were described as cowardly, lazy, small in stature, not particularly strong, vigorous, fairly intelligent, disgraceful in the context of trade and very skilled with a bow and at hunting in general, but lacking any inclination towards war.

The view of the Samic people as the other is however mostly not based on a suggestion that there were any ontological differences between the Samic people and the Swedes. On the contrary, the described differences were mostly ascribed to historical and cultural causes. It’s plausible that the explanation for the limited claims about any fundamental differences is found in the Swedish missionaries’ purpose of producing accounts of their travels. The Swedish missionaries were probably inclined to emphasize the basic similiarities in order to establish that the Samic people were possible to convert to Christianity as well as foster into becoming proper Swedish subjects.

In present time teachers face students who in at least some way are influenced by games. Therefore it’s vital to understand what potential games have for educational purposes. This study will therefore examine in what manners history is represented in Bethesda Software’s Fallout 4. Furthermore the purpose of the essay is to grasp the role history plays in Fallout 4 and in what manner history interplay with the historical counsciousness of the person playing it.

The fundamental question asked is: In what ways, if any, is history used in Fallout 4 and what are the implications for the historical counsciousness of the person playing? To answer the question I examined the representation of history within the game’s interactive dialogues, environment and story.

Following the analyze of the results the conclusion can be made that the players historical counsciousness is mobilized as an effect of primarily the clash between contrafactual history and factual history. The players critical thinking is triggered within the forementioned context and certain parts of the game can therefore be said to stimulate and assist the player in learning to think about history.

    Abstract [en]

Both the government and the museums agree on the fact that museums should be available to everyone and that the fact that it might not be is an enormous problem that need solving and that some of the ways to solve it is with digitalization and by cooperation with schools. This paper analyses the Sandby borg exhibition at Kalmar county museum in Kalmar, Sweden. The analysis is constructed from three main categories; inclusion, digitalization and cooperation. These categories are used to discuss how a museum exhibition should work and be used and then how it works in reality at Kalmar county museum.

    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the poor regulation in year 1871 and 1918, in Sweden. By examining the regulation texts with help by Carol Bacchis method the study is easy to overview. With theories about gender, class and citizenship as the theoretical framework the study provides an analysis that the gender equality was poor and in booth class topics and the citizenship topics the equality and the love for the week and poor, subtle.

The empirical data illustrate that the law text speaks directly to the man, and thereby leaves the women out of the text, naming her only by the word ”wife” and once as women in the 1871 regulation. The gender equality was low and the man hade all the official power. The citizenship ideal was a hard working and sober man that took good care of himself hand his family. If the man did not succeed in this, his citizenship was not fulfilled.

If you received money by the state as a poor subsidy, you lost your right to vote in national elections. This, and the fact that, if you hade family with money, they should take care of you instead of the state, by law, increased the class society.

The synthesis argues that the thoughts about the less fortunate is not so very different, then as of today.

    Abstract [en]

Wassily Kandinsky's work was shown in Sweden in 1914 for the first time, and in 1916 for the second time. A pioneer of abstract art, the reception of Kandinsky's paintings ranged from "sensational" to "not considered to be art" (the reason why the city of Malmo decided not to buy the paintings even for a bargain price). In 1916 Kandinsky's partner Gabriele Munter arranged a sales show for him in Stockholm, where they spent three month together in 1915-16. The show received reviews in all important newspapers, and Kandinsky became personally acquainted with Stockholm's major artists, critics and art historians.

    Abstract [en]

The decision to close a delivery ward often brings conflict and harsh debate, also the legitimacy of the responsible politicians and the whole system is put to question. All over the world the political institutions are dominated by men, although the number of women in these institutions have increased most decisions makers are still men and that’s how the situation is in Sweden. When a delivery ward is closed the sceptical often point out that it´s unjust that men are deciding on an issue that don’t really affect them as much as their wives, daughters or sister, thereby it´s just non-logical that they have the power. In Sweden the question about healthcare is in the hands of the landsting (regions) which means that politicians from the whole region are deciding on these political dilemmas. This means that MP from other cities then the one that will be affected by an decision are able to decide, this could also question the legitimacy from an geographical point of view. In the following document I will analyse two events that occurred in Kronobergs Län in south Sweden, the first is in 1974 when the delivery ward was closed in Tingsryd and the second is when the same thing occurred in Ljungby year 2007.

    Abstract [en]

The main aim of this thesis is to determine which type of knowledge is most prevalent in activities that are based on historical sources in two Swedish textbooks published for History 1b, aimed for upper secondary school students. This was achieved with the use of Ammert and Sharp’s (2016) matrix called “Knowledge types in textbook activities”, which categorizes the type of knowledge generated through textbook activities into four categories: Statement, Explanation, Reflection/analysis, and Emancipatory. The results of this study show that statement questions are the most common questions provided in both textbooks’ source-activities, while emancipatory questions is only shown once. Furthermore, by studying the source-activity sections’ function in relation to the textbook’s main text it could be concluded that textbooks whose source-activity sections’ function is to problematise the content of the main text need to include more explanatory, reflecting/analyzing and emancipatory than textbooks whose source-activity sections’ function is to both create and problematise new knowledge that is not related to the main text. This is due to the latter’s need of statement activities for the pupils to absorb and understand the new knowledge that is presented, while the same is achieved in the former’s relation to the main text. Finally, this study shows the advantage a teacher has in using this matrix when purchasing new textbooks and planning the course content. By using this method the teacher can both improve their selection of textbooks and create activities that compliment the knowledge generated through the textbook activities, which leads to the teacher’s job becoming more efficient and effective.

    Abstract [en]

This study revolves around calculating the extent of appearance of both anonymously and named men and women as well as determining whether or not Yvonne Hirdman’s gender theory is applicable on two versions of a Swedish educational history textbook called Epos: historia: för gymnasieskolans kurs A (2008) and Epos [historia] 1b (2012), published for two different curriculum. Our qualitative investigation of two parts of the book’s content proves that the two principles of gender system are present in both books, although to a lesser extent in the latter version. Calculating the material, results have shown that anonymous men and women are almost equally presented in Epos 2012, which is not the case in the 2008 version. However, studying the extent of named men and women, we can determine that male characters are overrepresented in both versions, with a total of 80 % of all persons named in the books being of the male gender. To further problematize our material, we discuss how the student’s identity, based on E.H. Erikson’s theory of identity, could be affected by the subject matter content. We believe that it can be malicious to student’s self-image, and that it is the teacher’s responsibility to debate with the students about how the gender system’s two principles are present in our society.

In this essay I have chosen to write about graves, settlements and historical, important central places during the late Iron Age and the introduction of Christianity in the east of Blekinge. The reason why I have chosen to write about this is because the area has many ancient monuments and not much have been written about the area. The main question is who where the people who lived there and why did they choose to settle there.

Are pollen records from small sites appropriate for REVEALS model-based quantitative reconstructions of past regional vegetation?: An empirical test in southern Sweden2016In: Vegetation History and Archaeobotany, ISSN 0939-6314, E-ISSN 1617-6278, Vol. 25, no 2, p. 131-151Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we test the performance of the Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites (REVEALS) model using pollen records from multiple small sites. We use Holocene pollen records from large and small sites in southern Sweden to identify what is/are the most significant variable(s) affecting the REVEALS-based reconstructions, i.e. type of site (lakes and/or bogs), number of sites, site size, site location in relation to vegetation zones, and/or distance between small sites and large sites. To achieve this objective we grouped the small sites according to (i) the two major modern vegetation zones of the study region, and (ii) the distance between the small sites and large lakes, i.e. small sites within 50, 100, 150, or 200 km of the large lakes. The REVEALS-based reconstructions were performed using 24 pollen taxa. Redundancy analysis was performed on the results from all REVEALS-model runs using the groups within (i) and (ii) separately, and on the results from all runs using the groups within (ii) together. The explanatory power and significance of the variables were identified using forward selection and Monte Carlo permutation tests. The results show that (a) although the REVEALS model was designed for pollen data from large lakes, it also performs well with pollen data from multiple small sites in reconstructing the percentage cover of groups of plant taxa (e.g. open land taxa, summer-green trees, evergreen trees) or individual plant taxa; however, in the case of this study area, the reconstruction of the percentage cover of Calluna vulgaris, Cyperaceae, and Betula may be problematic when using small bogs; (b) standard errors of multiple small-site REVEALS estimates will generally be larger than those obtained using pollen records from large lakes, and they will decrease with increasing size of pollen counts and increasing number of small sites; (c) small lakes are better to use than small bogs if the total number of small sites is low; and (d) the size of small sites and the distance between them do not play a major role, but the distance between the small sites and landscape/vegetation boundaries is a determinant factor for the accuracy of the vegetation reconstructions.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines masculinity in the Swedish military paper Värnpliktsnytt during 1971-1991. The purpose is to study the masculine norms and the hegemonic masculinity that Värnpliktsnytt conveys during these years. Värnpliktsnytt was handed out for free to all soldiers during 1971-2010.

During the 1970’s the women were only allowed on non-combat posts and in the 1980’s they more and more were included and accepted as soldiers and staff in the military. In 1989 women were allowed to apply for active and non-combat duty in all military sectors. This affected the masculine ideal of Värnpliktsnytt, and the desirable view of man started to change. Before the 1980’s strong men in the ranger divisions constituted the hegemonic masculinity’s peak, but during this decade the regular conscripted soldiers with more individual thought and softer feelings rose in the hegemonic hierarchy. Also with the common debate on gender equality men in the military was encouraged to take a bigger part in the home life and to act more responsible towards the upbringing of the children. Apart from the duty to family, the military duty is also central to the masculinity in Värnpliktsnytt during the whole examined period. Men are expected to fulfill their military duty, although it is accepted to complain about wage andworking conditions. The overall results points in the direction that the ideal man becomes more complex.

The Promised land – A letter analysis of America letters from 1850-1870 This essay is about the Swedish emigration to America. This essay will focus on the period 1840-1870, where the main focus will be the american civil war, and what the immigrants wrote back to their relatives in Sweden. This study will also focus on the integration of Swedish immigrants.

My main question are what did the swedes write back to Sweden during the war? And how did it differ from the period before and after the war?

But also can a war assimilate a immigrant faster than it would be done without the war?

The conclusion that has been made is that the war did help the swedish immigrants to integrate much faster than usually. Also the study shows that the language before the war was of that character that they where missing home whereas it shows that after the war it had completley turned around, instead of wanting to go back to Sweden, they wanted their relatives to come over to America.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, advances in text annotation, the computational analysis of images and quantitative corpus linguistics have introduced new and exciting approaches to the study of text and paratext that combine the perspectives of historical linguistics and book history. However, so far most corpus-based research in this field has been hampered by the manual nature of the visual analyses (see, e.g., Tyrkkö, Marttila & Suhr 2013 and Tyrkkö 2013). The manual measuring and evaluation of visual features in a consistent manner is both slow and prone to human error, particularly with volumes of texts sufficient for statistical interrogation. As a result, while the linguistic analysis of historical texts can be rigorously systematic and corpus-based, the visual data, when taken into account at all, have typically been rather scarce and anecdotal in nature. In this paper, I will discuss new computational methods of analysing diachronic changes in visual features of title-pages and body text, and of combining that information with linguistic data. Using two linguistic corpora, Early Modern English Medical Texts and Late Modern English Medical Texts, and ImagePlot 1.1, a tool designed for the analysis of visual data, I will first map the paratextual features of the medical books and turn them into a matrix of statistically usable data points (Manovich 2012, 2013) for further processing.

    Abstract [en]

During the 1960s and 1970s an increased interest in Native Americans can be seen in Sweden, e.g. through the establishment of organizations such as the Indian Club of Sweden. The aim of this thesis is to study the portrayal of Native Americans and its role through Albin Widén, a Swedish author, ethnologist and member of the Indian Club, and his non-fictional works on the Swedish migration to America, Swedish-America and Swedish contacts with Native Americans. The study is divided into four parts. The first part looks at the portrayal of the Native Americans in Widén’s writings, in comparison with Euro-Americans’ and Europeans’ traditional stereotypic images of a good and a bad Indian. The second part examines how Widén represents the contacts between Swedes in America and the Native Americans. The purpose of the third part of the analysis is to investigate Widén’s interest in Native Americans. Finally, the thesis focuses on the possible role of the portrayals of Indians as a counterpart in the creation and upholding of a Swedish identity.

In today’s archaeology there’s a growing need for non-invasive prospection methods. However there’s a methodological gap and what’s missing is a method for locating human bones. In this study a specially trained German shepherd is put through scientific tests determining how good the dog is at telling the different between the scent of human and animal bones. The dog is also tested in an outdoor environment to simulate an actual archaeological site. The tests in this study show that the dog can distinguish between the smell of human and animal bones with an accuracy of 94,2 % and that he can detect human bones in the field. Further tests need to be conducted to calibrate the method.

    Abstract [en]

The following study has its origin and context in the politically polarised McCarthy era of the American history. With the WWII in retrospect, politicians in Western nations quickly acknowledged the potential impact and sphere of influence of popular culture and its ability to form public opinion. During this period attempts were made to censor culture from underlying socialist messages in order to spread and awake support for the government, especially in mainstream Hollywood productions. However, how successful were these attempts and did it actually create a resistance against the censorship’s proclaimers? This study analyses four different Hollywood science fiction films from the 1950’s and argues that the underlying messages were more diverse than previously expected. Some of the productions seemed to endorse the McCarthyist values, whereas others more clearly rejected these sets of values, implicitly claiming they were a highly irrational response to an unstable international situation.

Geronimo eller Goyathlay?: Hur en apacheindian presenteras i sin självbiografi samt i annan litteratur.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Forskningsläget utgår mycket från Angie Debo’s bok Geronimo: The man, his time, his place, men all litteratur diskuteras även utifrån ett psykoanalytiskt perspektiv genom Ludvig Igras teorier kring hur människan hanterar traumatiska situationer.

    Abstract [sv]

This study aims to describe the influence of natural law on the common concept of justiceamongst Swedish officers around 1700. Through this study I intend to establish that therewere discrepancies and expressions of other norms in 17th and 18th century military culture. Both from natural law but also from Christian belief. A secondary aim is to establish howsuch variances were manifested and how they can be explained.A few theoretical starting-points have been used as a guide in developing the purpose andrelevant questions for this study. I intend to describe the key features of the concept of naturallaw as thoroughly as needed, through relevant legal literature. The next step will be to mapthese outlines against texts from the time, through a qualitative close reading. This study has investigated, at least, seven diaries from the time. Through triangulation, crossanalysis and comparative interpretation, the results have been evaluated with the purpose ofcrystallizing a common synthesis. The result of these findings varies, but in my opinionnatural law had an impact on certain subjects in the Swedish Empire around 1700. This notionopens the way for interesting perspectives when trying to understand this period.

    Abstract [en]

The prostitute has always been a canvas for society to paint its picture on. Who she was was not as important as who society made her out to be. This essay intends to show how the idea of the prostituted woman was constituted during the regulation of prostitution in the late 19th and early 20th century in Stockholm. Basing my study on the idea of constructivism as well as Foucaults theories of power, I performed a discourse analysis on newspaper articles written in the abolitionist newspaper Sedlighetsvännen as well as medical and social argumentative writings from doctors and professors. With that I have sketched an image of the prostituted woman as she was during the regulation. This image or idea may serve as an illustration as to how social identity is constructed through discourse.
