A Parallel Approach for Solving Data Flow Analysis Problems2008In: The 20th IASTED International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Systems: PDCS 2008, Acta Press, Calgary , 2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Program analysis supporting software development is often part of edit-compile-cycles and precise program analysis is time consuming. With the availability parallel processing power on desktop computers, parallelization is a way to speed up program analysis. This paper introduces a parallelization schema for program analysis that can be translated to parallel machines using standard scheduling techniques. First benchmarks analyzing a number of Java programs indicate that the schema scales well for up to 8 processors, but not very well for 128 processors. These results are a first step towards more precise program analysis in Integrated Development Environments utilizing the computational power of today’s custom computers.

Project factors - A possible way to create a data bank of project experience.2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this master thesis I investigate how to make projects more efficient. I did my thesis at the airborne radar division at Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW). Their projects often cost more than estimated and they also tend to last longer than estimated.

The airborne radar division wants to know why the final result, in most cases exceed the budget and time plan. Their goal is to learn from the experience in previous projects and to gather all that experience in an experience base.

They gave me the task to start the process towards an experience base. The theory I base my result and conclusions on is The Experience Factory. The Experience Factory is an example of an experience base that was developed primarily for software projects. I started investigating projects at the airborne radar division trying to find common denominators (factors). I found some factors that I believe have a major impact on the projects. The projects really have to rely on these factors to be able to reach the goal of the projects. These factors are the first step towards an experience base. Starting a process towards an experience base is a work that takes many years especially at a company of this size. My thesis is a start towards the goal and in my result I present the factors I found and in the conclusions I give suggestions for the continuing work towards an experience base.

    Abstract [sv]

    Knowledge Generation Through Human-Centered Information Visualization2009In: Information Visualization, ISSN 1473-8716, E-ISSN 1473-8724, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 180-196Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One important intention of human-centered information visualization is to represent huge amounts of abstract data in a visual representation that allows even users from foreign application domains to interact with the visualization, to understand the underlying data, and finally, to gain new, application-related knowledge. The visualization will help experts as well as non-experts to link previously or isolated knowledge-items in their mental map with new insights. Our approach explicitly supports the process of linking knowledge-items with three concepts. At first, the representation of data items in an ontology categorizes and relates them. Secondly, the use of various visualization techniques visually correlates isolated items by graph-structures, layout, attachment, integration, or hyperlink techniques. Thirdly, the intensive use of visual metaphors relates a known source domain to a less known target domain. In order to realize a scenario of these concepts, we developed a visual interface for non-experts to maintain complex wastewater treatment plants. This domain-specific application is used to give our concepts a meaningful background.

Web Services: A Comparative Study2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Master thesis enhances an existing library search system with a new dynamic web interface and introduces the ability to perform remote searches by using Web Services. The remote search functionality also includes the ability to compress SOAP-messages, this functionality is optional. The system is implemented using the Microsoft.NET Framework with Visual Studio C#. A library needs to store information about articles and we have chosen to use a Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere database.

The practical part of this thesis describes the architecture of our implementation and the design process.

The theoretical part is a comparative study between dynamically created web pages and static pages, SOAP-compression versus no compression, SOAP-optimization versus no optimisation and the use of Web Services locally versus local classes.

Attityder till matematik: En undersökning i årskurs 1 på gymnasiet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Wickrpedia: Integrering av sociala tjänster2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The web has evolved much through the years. From being a place where author and reader were clearly distinguished, it now invites everyone to take part in the development of both content and technology. Social services are central in what is called Web 2.0. Wikis, blogs and folksonomies are all examples of how the users and their communities are key to the development of services. Collaborative writing, tags and API:s are central. Social services are given an extra dimension through integration. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether it was possible to integrate an encyclopedia with a photosharing service. The issue was whether it was possible to find relevant images to the article they were connected to. The method for examining the issue was to create a service which functions was investigated through user tests. Wickrpedia was created, which is an integration of Wikipedia and Flickr. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia in the shape of a wiki, while Flickr is used to store, organize and share photos. The result shows that the images added someting to the encyclopedia; it became more entertaining and pleasant and the users’ knowledge was increased. The relevance of the images was good. The service can and should be improved. The conclusion is still that the service worked well and was seen as an improvement by the users.

Ämnesintegrering mellan matematik och karaktärsämnen2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Laborativ matematik: möjligheter i undervisningen ur ett lärarperspektiv2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Attaching people and technology – between e and government2007In: GLIT-conference, Helsingborg, 2007Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we will discuss performance of e-government, gender, skills, learning and technology with the use of various stories of the transformation or modernisation process of Swedish public sector. Swedish public sector is involved in an overwhelming change process aiming towards the strong political hope to create a good service society with information technology. The transformation process is united under the overall concept e-government and it is also characterised as a modernisation process with the use of concepts such as rationalisation, efficiency and effectiveness. This is the grand narrative or the dominating discourse of Swedish society Another discourse is the silences of employees’ agencies, their participation in the development of services, and also the public sector as a dominating labour market for women. The modernisation or the implementation of IT will probably change the working conditions and practices radically for civil servants. Based on the earlier implementations of IT in the public sector there should be great concerns about how skills, experiences and gender intersect but also how they could and should influence the transformation processes; a process that again seems to be dominated by a technological determinism and a strong belief on IT as a driving force in the modernisation of the public sector. But as always there also exist other initiatives and stories. One is about a net based higher education study programme and courses in the field of e-government at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden. Very few low-educated women employed in the public sector enrolled in the training although they were the explicit target group and there were articulated hopes about creating e-government training also including the daily practices and experiences of the civil servants. The low number of female students and also women´s absence in the national e-government and IT policies was the starting point for our research project From government to e-government: gender, skills, learning and technology. Women working at various sectors in four municipalities in Blekinge participated in the project between November 2005 and June 2007. In the project we developed and used a repertoire of methods sensitive to everyday practices in order to create space and time for women and their individual and collaborative stories. That is, narratives full of certainties, uncertainties and possibilities.

From Government to e-Government: Gender, Skills, Learning and Technology2007In: LearnIT, Särö, 2007Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The usage of Wireless local area networks (WLAN) became very popular amongst private citizens, during the beginning of the 21 century, because of its mobile advantages. The technology brought many advantages, but also many disadvantages and the question was how many had noticed or knew that these existed and afterwards had chosen to secure their WLAN.

The main purpose of this thesis was to examine the current level of security awareness, in the community, when using WLAN. Other goals were to investigate the current general legal context, about actions against or through a WLAN, and measure the widespread usage of security within WLAN. To answer this we used a positivistic and deductive approach, with qualitative interviews to sort out the current general legal context, Wardriving to find and measure the current state of security within WLAN's and quantitative questionnaires to find out the most common types of security awareness amongst users of WLAN. The content of all this was based on facts about the WLAN technology, the risks that comes with it, risk preventing security routines and the Swedish law.

Finally we established that the current general legal context was out-of-date and not adapted to handle the new risks that WLAN had brought. Further on the result also showed a increased usage of security amongst WLAN in the community and that the main reason for this was the younger WLAN owners. Younger users also turned out to have higher security awareness, than older users, and particularly very high technical knowledge.

Composition and Optimization2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A recent trend in software engineering is to delay design decisions. One motivation is that requirements or properties of the application and environment are not known until later in the design and development process. This continues to hold for design decisions in a high-performance context where e.g., the number of processors is assigned late to applications and their components.

In this thesis we present three case studies, ranging from Web Services and Grid computing to library design. In each of these case studies we study how performance requirements, and both properties of the application and the environment determine when design decisions can be made. We found that in many scenarios, design decisions have to be delayed, sometimes even until execution time.

Based on our findings, we introduce context-aware composition, a composition technique that allows the designer to specify a set of variant implementations, a set of properties and goal criteria. The context-aware composition then composes the variants into a best fit application according to the goal criteria as well as application and environmental properties. The composition will happen automatically at the earliest possible time i.e., when enough information is available, either off-line or on-line. By using context-aware composition, developers can focus on the functional aspects of the application, and let the composition technique decide the delayed optimization decisions.

We show that each of the cases studies is a special case of the context-aware composition. This makes context-aware composition a plausible solution to the problems solved in the case studies as well as other similar problems.

The Effects of XML Compression on SOAP Performance2007In: World Wide Web: Internet and Web Information Systems, ISSN 1386-145x, Vol. 10, no 3, p. 279-307Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

ML is the foundation of the SOAP protocol, and in turn, Web Service communication. This self-descriptive textual format for structured data is renowned to be verbose. This verbosity can cause problems due to communication and processing overhead in resource-constrained environments (e.g., small wireless devices). In this paper, we compare different binary representations of XML documents. To this end, we propose a multifaceted and reusable test suite based on real-world scenarios. Our main result is that only simple XML compression methods are suitable for a wide range of scenarios. While these simple methods do not match the compression ratios of more specialized ones, they are still competitive in most scenarios. We also show that there are scenarios that none of the evaluated methods can deal with efficiently.

    Abstract [sv]

Co-operation between different units to make the purchasing process of indirect material more effective2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organisations must change in order to be able to follow the expansion in the world and be competitive along with other organisations at the global market. To successfully efficient the organisations reduce their purchasing costs for material and products. One way to reduce the purchasing costs is to centralise all purchases in an organisation. When a big organisation does that, they use, among other things, the economies of scale. (Personal communication,Department Manager, 2005-06-17 and Senior adviser, IMS ITP, 2005-08-15)

While studying Information Logistics, 140 p, at the Centrum för Informationslogistik in Ljungby, has IKEA IT been our co-operating company. When we talked with our Department Manager during our internship, she describes co-operation problems between the units when they purchase IT-related indirect material. Indirect material is products that support the daily work within the organisation.

Since IKEA recently started a central purchasing function for indirect material our assignment was to see how IKEA could be more efficient when purchasing IT-related indirect material. Different units at IKEA are involved during central purchases of IT-related indirect material. The fact that many conflicts arise when different units are to co-operate is well known (Gadde & Håkansson, 1998). We found this very interesting and therefore our chose of subject.

The co-operation conflicts that have arose during our investigation shows clear signals in the theory about why they arise. According to Danermark (2000) it is more a rule than an exception that it anticipates a competition. Different occupational groups have different prestige and power, the bigger the difference is the bigger is the probability that a problem regarding co-operation arise.

One difficulty with centralized purchases is to get the different units at the organisation to co-operate. Co-operation problems could be caused by many factors for example did the different units use different terminologies and could therefore be misunderstood.(Gadde & Håkansson, 1998)

Unique for IKEA’s organisation is that all different units work against the same business concept, goal and vision (Personal communication, Senior adviser, 2005-08-15). As long as the involved units are independent and do not have identical purposes will there always be conflicts (Gadde & Håkansson, 1998). Heide, Johansson and Simonsson (2005) considers that the visions are build up on different goals. These goals are in its parts build up on a number of strategies.

All IKEA-units struggle towards the same vision and goal, but the different units use different strategies to reach the goals. This different strategy creates conflicts when the different IKEA-units should co-operate.

To make the most optimized purchase for IKEA should the purchasing department handle the contacts with the suppliers (Personal communication, Purchase Process Manager, 2005-08-27). That generates a conflict when the other involved units also want to make the first contact (Personal communication, Process Owner, 2005-09-07 and Project Manager 2005-09-23). One problem is that the purchasing department today have a lack of resources and do not have time to handle all purchases and delegate some purchases to the other involved units. This gives a double message about how IKEA want the purchasing process to work.

Problemlösning i form av räknesagor2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Case Study About Cell Phone Use by People in Rural Kenya2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The arrival of the cell phone in rural areas has taken Kenya by storm. It has turned out to be such an amazing transition happening since most people in the start, did not reckon its capacity to gradually become a lifestyle choice. It has certainly changed the way people communicate and becoming a natural necessity for people of Kenya. This can be seen from the numbers of cell phone units sold in the past years. The cell phones in Kenya have gone from 1 million in 2002 to 6.5 million in 2006. Some of this boost has found their way into the rural areas of Kenya and that is what this thesis focuses on. Through a qualitative research approach presented as a case study provide both vigorous descriptions and exiting information. The case study is based mainly on material from telephone interviews that were carried out with a selected sample of the population living in the countryside to obtain their points of view. In addition some opinions received in email form from an organization based in the western part of Kenya is included. A related email questionnaire was administered to one of the companies that sell cell phones in Kenya. Reference has been made to previous research to present some insightful frame of reference on this subject. In conclusion the people in rural parts of Kenya use the short messaging service (SMS) as the most cost effective way of communication. Furthermore, the M-Pesa function on that enables users to make money transactions is also widely used since most people in these areas do not have a bank account. The cell phone has transformed the job market and had a tremendous impact on running a business and made it easier to be available when looking for jobs. It is clear that the cell phone has brought practical, social and economical change and contributing to cultural enhancement. There is however future needs as to solve the battery charging which is a main problem that rural inhabitant have to deal with. This thesis finally shows that the penetration of the cell phone in rural Kenya is of great success. The cell phone is a technique to bridge the gap between cities and rural areas in Kenya.

Människans förhållningssätt till förändring: En fallstudie kring implementationen av ny teknik2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ontological mapping between different higher educational systems: The mapping of academic educational system on an international level2006Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Master thesis sets its goals in researching and understanding the structure of different educational systems. The main goal that this paper inflicts is to develop a middleware aiming at translating courses between different educational systems.

The procedure is to find the meaning of objects and courses from the different educational systems point of view, this is mainly done through processes such as identifying the context, semantics and state of the objects involved, perhaps in different activities. The middleware could be applied, with small changes, to any structured system of education.

This thesis introduces a framework for using ontologies in the translation and integration of course aspects in different processes. It suggests using ontologies when adopting and structuring different educational systems on an international level. This thesis will, through an understanding of ontologies construct a middleware for the translation process between different courses in the different educational systems. As an example courses in Sweden, Germany and Tajikistan have been used for the mapping and constructing learning goals and qualifications.

Indications of a possible symmetry and its breaking in a many-agent model obeying quantum statistics2008In: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics, ISSN 1539-3755, E-ISSN 1550-2376, Vol. 77, no 3, p. Article ID: 031126-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The results of computer simulations are presented which give evidence for the existence of an interesting symmetry in a many-agent model which demonstrates, in special cases, both Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. This symmetry is expressed in the close vicinity of the mean values of the degree of ultrametricity and the fraction of isosceles of the sets of agent memories (histories) coded by two different information-loss coding schemes. It is shown that this (in some sense) approximate statistical supersymmetry is probably broken at low temperatures—below some condensation limit. This breaking leads to the appearance of specific coding schemes for boson and fermion histories. The meaning of this specificity is revealed by applying the interpretation of the many-agent model described earlier [ A. A. Ezhov and A. Yu. Khrennikov Phys. Rev. E 71 016138 (2005)].

Aspects on Implementing RUP in Organizations: an Implemeter Perspective2009In: Proceedings of ECIME 2009, 2009, p. 149-158Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The use of an information systems development method (ISDM) is almost an understatement in the IT literature. The literature arguments for use are consequently logical and convincing. A more problematic and complex picture emerges when it comes to practical information systems development work where one cannot take ISDM use for granted. This became my experiences from two years as a leader for an ISDM implementing group in a large Swedish public organization. The difficulties in implementing the ISDM resulted in the creation of a network for experience exchange between medium and large organizations (public and private) struggling with similar ISDM implementation processes. The network held two annual meetings and the research presented here was conducted during one of these meetings. The aim of the study was to illuminate the ISDM efforts from an operative implementation role perspective. Fourteen individuals in ISDM implementation roles answered two questions concerning critical success factors for ISDM implementation respectively experienced shortcomings in the implementation work. The investigation resulted in 130 factors for ISDM implementation. The factors were analysed and compared to research on organizational implementation and technology adoption.

Evaluate IT where Effects Occur and get Directives for Managerial Action2008In: Proceedings of ECIME 2008 The 2nd European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation, 2008, p. 159-168Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Concepts for evaluation of information technology (IT)/information system (IS) investments are often designed to investigate one single application. The concept presented in this article has an opposite approach. The focus of interest is on individuals and their daily operations. Individually experienced benefit from a current set of computer based systems are investigated and analysed. The aim of the study is to describe and gain understanding about IT-systems contribution to promote individual performance and also to gain knowledge useful for managerial action.

An evaluation model for assessment and analysis of use and benefits from IT was developed and used in three case studies. The investigation detects individually experienced benefit (or the opposite) from IT use. The model has one basic assumption concerning knowledge and managerial action. It is assumed that successful implementation of concepts from IT-literature has a potential to improve contribution from IT. Individually experienced benefit from IT use (factors for contribution) where therefore mapped to literature on information systems. The frame of reference used included: organisational implementation, organisational learning, quality concepts, IT-strategies and management, IS/IT architecture, information systems development (with focus on usability) and software maintenance.

Previous research indicates that positive factors for IT usage are linked to personal efficiency and factors that promote personal work tasks. Negative factors appear when use of IT-systems is experienced as uncomfortable and not logical. Lack of integration between systems and low or mismatched system functionality are also found as negative factors. The case studies resulted in 33 factors (25 unique) for IT-benefit. The factors where analysed and related to research on IT-evaluation, mapped to literature on information systems and also discussed as possible maps for managerial action.

Two important conclusions from the study: 1) Successful implementation of concepts from IT-literature will result in increased benefit from IT 2) Software maintenance should be organised to focus on users work tasks and support from a current set of IT-systems – not to improve single applications.

Fysik - kan det vara något för flickor?: En kvalitativ studie om undervisningsmetodikens betydelse för ämnet fysik2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Case Study on How Chinese Students Use Their Cell Phones in Sweden Compared to That in China2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on cell phone usage. By comparing how a group of students use their cell phones in Sweden with that in China, alterant cell phone usage behaviors will be concluded. The study includes a case study. In order to do the research, the author selects a specific group and holds interviews. Three theories are used in this thesis which are: 1) mobile context, 2) switching behavior of mobile users and 3) transaction utility and reference situation. After introducing these three theories, the author concludes six theoretical factors which are combined into one competent framework. Base on the new framework, the author analyzes the result from the case study. After presenting the interview and the results, the author finds that Chinese students use their cell phones less frequent in Sweden compared to that in China. In order to find out the reasons, the author creates goal, emotion, fee, location and habit as the five matching factors which result in those changes. The matching factors are the bridge between the theories and the case study. After generalizing how those factors affect people while using cell phones, future work is to raise up some thoughts of how cell phones will be like in the future which is relevant to how to adapt information technology to human lives.

Introduction of information management software from Sweden to China under the awareness of culture differences2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Culture plays a key role in international business. This work-based thesis undertakes a case-study research of an information management software introduction process from Sweden to China. To design interview questions, the author used Prof. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions as the base theory and reviewed a number of literatures which apply this theory in the IT area. After interviews with both Swedish and Chinese sites, the results were analyzed with the theoretical data to examine how cultural differences influence people in a software introduction process. The author also applied software culturalization from Marble and Lu. Compared to the author’s own experiences and interview data, a recommendation list is stated as a guide of how to succeed in software introduction under different cultural backgrounds.

Saab Aerotech: resursplanering i teori och praktik på avdelningen Sensors, Command & Control2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis treats the enterprise resource planning of Saab Aerotechs department Sensors, Command & Control. The authors have managed the issue of the problem through the action resource method. The modification process of UML and UP was used with the author’s compile of a case with interviews. This method has been a help tool for designing a specification of requirements, which included all the needs of the employers at the department and what they demanded of the new enterprise resource planning tool.

The reason behind this thesis arose from the commission body which set off the requirements; a more cost efficient work routine through the resource planning in the department. This study is concentrated towards a multinational project organization where the project operates collaterally. The basic foundation of this problem lies in the need of a resource planning tool which operates throughout the whole department and is used among all the employers. The problems arise when distributing resources to different projects. The project leader and the resource owner currently does not own a resource planning tool for distributing the resources to the different projects. This causes an inefficient way of planning the resources and provides difficulties for the project leaders and resource owners.

The commission body provided the authors with a list of name of employers which she thought were relevant to interview for this study. Nine respondents from the list were interviewed and they declared the issue of the need of a new resource planning tool and its prospective characteristics it requires.

The search for resource planning tools was restricted to the national market, for the reason that one of the requirements was the need of a helpdesk giving support in the Swedish language. The benefit of this requirement would be of strategically aims to make the support and maintenances of the system more easily handled. The selections of resource planning system were limited to three choices that fulfill the requirements of the needs. These planning tools will be further described in this thesis. The purpose and question of the report is; can we with the help of an action research method and the UML process, recommend a resource planning tool at the company Saab Aerotechs department Sensors, Command & Control.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis will consider theories and different solutions that a developer of a website can take advantage of when creating a community for the web. To find out how the different questions and problems can be solved, a complete community for the web has been developed. This community has as a profile to concentrate on students at Växjö University.

This Internet site has been under development since the autumn of 2003 and became official for the first time during the month of February 2004. Afterwards, the members started to drop in and in the front of the summer of 2004 there had become just above 600 members that registered themselves of the site. During the autumn of 2004, the developer decided to create a new version of the site, after that the first one had been closed, due to complications with the server supplier.

The new site started to be developed and became available to the public during the month of February 2005. The site and developer in question is Campusportalen and Erik Flachmeyer (which also is the author of this thesis).

Elevers kunskaper i matematik: Kan eleverna det de förväntas kunna när de börjar år 7?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Nya användningsområden KUL2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Producing a commercial video targeted at several different formats poses a number of challenges. The different formats in this case are the web, TV and different setups of projection screens. Additional obstacles arise when the video not only has to be compatible with several different forms of display; its information also needs to stay current for as long as possible. This thesis addresses some of the issues encountered while producing commercial videos for two high schools in Osby kommun.
