Undersökning av Informationssystem i småföretag: En studie av hur Växjös små företag är nöjda med sina Informationssystem2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In todays sociaty the use of information systems is wide spread and many corporations and buisnesses both in large and small spread make use of more advanced and sopisticated systems. Larger corporations have their own IT sections that maintain and updates their systems on a daily basis. They have the money and resources for it by how do the small businesses coop with it. How satisfied are the small businesses that are maybe runing on systems that might not be supplying the needs that the business is in need of. In this paper we investigate this question in the form of a questionnaire. The investigation is conducted in a selected part of the market in the swedish city of Växjö. The purpose of the investigation is to see how satisfied 30 businesses are with their information systems. The investigations background comes from a similar american investigation and it’s the papers purpose to compare the results that arose during the american studie with the swedish results to see what diffrences and similaritys there is. The investigation spans over 3 sector of bueisnesses, trade, service and consult. The investigation studies how these 3 sectors satisfaction relates to one and other, how satisfied and disatisfiedthey are in different parts of their IT systems.

Mjuk och hård styrning av Lean bestämmer inte hur effektiv Lean är på företag: En fallstudie av ett införande av Lean2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Never before have we consumed as much as now and customers are constantly demanding higher quality at a lower price, while at the same time costs are increasing for labour, energy and materials. Different production systems are used to meet customer needs. Lean production is such a production system and includes a variety of practical tools but also a philosophy based on commitment, knowledge, team spirit and leadership. Lean is something many companies strive to introduce, but studies shows that less than 20% succeed in introducing the entire Lean concept. It’s mainly the soft parts of Lean (the philosophy) that companies have most difficulty to implement, which means that in many cases Lean is reduced to a toolbox.

This study is about the Lean implementation in a case company. The case company introduced Lean through its participation in the "Produktionslyftet" in 2007 with the aim of streamlining processes and responding to toughening competition. A number of interviews have been carried out with both production staff and senior executives. In order to highlight the individual's role in the introduction and adoption of Lean, a research model has been developed to analyse the empirical data, which is based on the framework for technology, organization and environment, TOE, but where the influence of environment has been replaced by the influence of the individual, TOI. The theoretical survey model is the investigator's contribution to the science.

The result of the study shows that the case company is a classic example of a company that has succeeded well in introducing the technical tools of Lean and that the operation works much better today than before the introduction of Lean. The case company has increased the delivery reliability and sales but at the same time decreased the production area and still produces more at the same time allotted.

However, the case company has not as clearly implemented the soft elements of Lean, that is, the philosophy itself. The survey model TOI highlights the nature of the business, a hierarchical and top-down organization, as a possible factor why the soft components have not been attached. The model also shows that the individual does not integrate and interact with the influences that should create Lean. The interaction between individual and management (organization) are seen as essential for achieving the soft components. In order to get the whole concept of Lean, there must be an interaction and connection between the three influences of the TOI model; technology, organization and individual. All parts are equally important for the whole of Lean to get attached. This is a possible reason why there are less than 20% of Lean projects that fail to implement the entire Lean concept.

Migrating from integrated library systems to library services platforms: An exploratory qualitative study for the implications on academic libraries’ workflows2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present master thesis is an exploratory qualitative study in academic libraries regarding the transition from the integrated library systems to the next generation integrated library systems or library services platforms and the potential implications in their internal workflows. Nowadays, libraries all over the world are facing up with a number of challenges in terms of acquiring, describing and making available to the public all the resources, both printed and electronic, they manage. In particular, the academic libraries have more reasons to wish to fulfill their users’ needs since the majority of them use the library sources more and more for scientific research and educational purposes. In this study we attempt to explore the phenomenon in the globe using the available literature and to identify the implications in libraries’ workflows and the possible future developments. Moreover, through observation and semi-structured interviews we try to identify the current developments in the Greek context regarding the adoption of next ILS and possible implications in their workflows. Finally, we attempt a comparison between the Greek situation and the international one.

Extreme Production - Administration Makeover: ur ett informationslogistiskt perspektiv2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Extreme Production Makeover™ caught our interest before we began to write our C-essay. The method is about transformation and how to make a production line more efficient in order to raise the productivity level within a short timeframe. Since we are about to gradu-ate in Information logistics, we are curious to find out if Extreme Production Makeover™ is transferable to administrative and service flows, from an information logistics perspec-tive.

Within the area of production, there has been a long tradition to work with efficiency and improvements. Our studies of efficiency methods within administrative flows indicate that these methods are not as widespread within the service trades. How come?

In general, the procedure of changing administrative and service flows is a long process, however, if an Extreme Production Makeover™ could be accomplished during a short timeframe, so could probably also Extreme Administration Makeover.

    Aim:

The aim of our study is to examine and compare production flow efficiency along with ef-ficiency in administrative and service flows. We want to illustrate the benefit of using in-formation logistics in structural changes, for both companies and personnel working with process efficiency. The result of our study is an action plan for Extreme Administration Makeover.

    Method:

Our essay was created as a proposal; we did not test or evaluate Extreme Administration Makeover in reality. We have studied a variety of literature linked to information logistics and the efficacy of different flows, which we have summarized and illustrate under the heading Theory. In order to support the theory further, we spoke to key personnel within Extreme Production Makeover™ and Lean Forum and determined how the methods could be compared and applied. The result of these discussions is presented in the Em-pirical research. Furthermore, we have added our knowledge about information logistics and created an action plan, with an attached model exclusively for Extreme Administration Makeover. Accordingly, the result presented in the Analysis is followed by a Conclusion.

    Delimitation:

We have chosen to limit our essay to the methods of traditional production efficiency and Lean Production, although we are well aware that there are several other methods for change.

    Results:

Parts of a transformation plan could be accomplished during a short, or minimally short timeframe, however, in order to establish a deeply rooted work process, particularly the underlying force, and to permeate this vision into the enterprise, almost certainly requires more time. The outcome depends on the individuals affected and involved in the process. By establishing deeply rooted thoughts, goals and visions throughout the organisation, a solid foundation generates a sound transformation, which is crucial for a positive outcome.

En studie om möjligheter att stoppa förfalskningar: Spårbarheten i en global värld2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe the traceability of products that protect against counterfeiting and examine how protection against counterfeit products have been developed to date, and to display the opportunity to streamline the protection of products and brands.

Nowadays, in the global world, it is getting increasingly more difficult to track the products. Especially for the last link in the chain, which in most cases is the customer and who is constantly exposed to risks. This report deals with the possibilities of preventing and detecting counterfeit products. Fake products are not unusual in an historical perspective. It has been common with counterfeits ever since the Middle Ages continuously until today. Forgers have become more skillful and they are successful in most industries. Many of the fake products are of poor quality and can be downright dangerous to the customer.

To answer the question, the author used a qualitative collection method. Interviews took place with seven respondents from the pharmaceutical industry, government agencies and professional organizations. The study showed that all the interviewed pharmaceutical companies have been exposed to their products being copied. Despite attempts finding a common solution for the medical industry, nationally and internationally, such a solution has not yet been adopted. Each company has tried to protect themselves with several technical solutions. Authorities have been running campaigns, trying to get consumers to avoid buying counterfeit products.

Today the work is done through the development of laws, regulations, packaging, labelling and tracing techniques. It has been primarily done on a corporate or national level. This has until now often been ineffective because the counterfeiting industry is a global phenomenon.

The conclusion of this study is that in order to reach international harmonization, the legislation and regulation is required, to be able to interact with standardized techniques to detect and prevent fraud in the entire supply chain for each industry.

Contextual dependence of a business model: A study of IT companies2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research presented here is dedicated to the contextual dependence of a business model assumed by an IT company. A business model may articulate the value of a specific technology, while the technology as such cannot generate value. This study starts with presenting a review of current understanding of the business model as such. This gives rise to the formulation of a pre-understanding suggesting that any business model should be dependent on its context, for its structure and functioning. This pre-understanding was tested empirically by a study of three IT companies. The key result suggests that the conception of a company’s business model may be made fruitfully in relation to the industry’s lifecycle stage. A second finding suggests that there seems to be a co-evolution of the business model and the information infrastructure that underlies and enables such a business model. The study contributes to the cross-disciplinary research by revealing relations between information technologies, business models and organizational life cycle. The outcomes of the research may help practitioners to analyze the company’s business and make better decisions.

Presenting Product Information: Helping Customers’ Decision Making, Using a Personal Mobile RFID Reader2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Problem drafting: Is it possible to give the customer larger foundation for decision making of contemplated product by presenting more extensive and personal filtered information regarding the product, with the help of a personal RFID-reader?

Methodology: In this bachelor thesis, we used constructive research to build the prototype in which we used a conceptual-analytic approach to gather the information to build it. Empirical studies were used for evaluation.

Results: Our conclusion shows that even though it is possible to

increase the basis on which the customers make decisions, through a RFID system, there are several issues that need to be addressed and taken into consideration before making it possible to implement such a system.

API:er i den offentliga sektorn: Öppenhet och datatillgänglighet enligt offentlighetsprincipen och PSI-direktivet2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has long had a good tradition of openness in the public sector, thanks to the principle ofpublic access. But due to increasing technological advances and demands on data availability theclassic transparency is no longer sufficient. There are already very interesting public data sets inSweden, but in most cases they are either stored in formats that are difficult to read digitally or it'stoo expensive to use. This thesis examines how an API can be developed, used and integrated with other API:s to open upthe above mentioned data in a better way and make it more accessible to potential users.Furthermore, the real benefits of the PSI directive are examined, and how they along with theprinciple of public access can contribute to the new openness. In connection to this thesis aprototype has also been developed to provide examples of how to combine different API:s for thevisualization of geographic data, and how an API can be built on top of the visualization to makethis data more available.

Organizing the Organization: Recommendation of development for explicit and tacit knowledge sharing at a University Library in North America2017Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report works with a case provided in the course IS/IT for Organizing, Communication and Coordination II at Linnaeus University, Sweden. The case involves a University in North America that is renovating and revamping and, in essence, reinventing its library along with the services offered by the library and the facilities within.

Along with the university staff in charge of the library renovations, the group analysed the possible gaps in the current working ecosystem and discussed how they can be improved upon. It was found out and understood that there is a lack of cohesion in the way the library staff generate, store and share documents and resources, which was intertwined with the lack of team culture and sense of professional community. Useful information was said to be in silos in the form of staff members that were somewhat disconnected from each other. This information was often in the form of explicit knowledge that was not easily accessible and tacit knowledge that was, in a sense, locked away since it was involuntarily not being shared.

The group preparing this report used the theoretical background of knowledge management and knowledge sharing, along with a Soft Systems Methodology approach, to provide recommendations that the professionals in charge of the library renovations could execute upon during their plans. The recommendations revolve around organizing the organizational knowledge and bringing more cohesiveness to the way the staff and systems generate, store and share this knowledge, leading the way towards a knowledge-friendly culture.

The proposed solutions elaborated by the group take Nonaka’s two types of knowledge (1994) into consideration: explicit and tacit knowledge. The recommendations begin with organizing the knowledge with aims of easier retrieval by users, using Shared Folder platforms or Content Management Systems. The active creation and sharing of knowledge shall be supported using blogs, wikis and e-learning authoring systems. Sharing of tacit knowledge can be enhanced by a Yellow Pages of the library staff, Community of Practice and through mentoring and networking activities.

Aging-in-place with ICT: A qualitative study of senior citizen users’ perception and acceptance towards Smart home technology2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative, interpretive research study of how six senior citizens’ aged 70-85 describe their use and need of Smart home technology for their independent living and welfare. Data was collected through technology probing and interviews. Data analysis was done using a thematic method. The research was underpinned by the theoretical model Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2). The research setting was senior citizens’ living in Care housing rented out by the municipality owned company.

The findings show that technology is perceived by the senior citizens’ to be something must be taught and takes effort. Senior housing need to be better designed for its senior tenants. It was also found that if technology is used to ensure safety, fall detection for instance, trust and sufficient support is crucial. The findings suggest it could be difficult to assess your own need and to realize when assistance technology is needed. It also found that the use of technology was perceived as being individual and as something that cannot be treated collectively. It was suggested that health professionals do have some influence on the senior citizen and their use of technology. The findings of this study was compared to previous studies and how it relates to the determinants and moderating factors suggested by the theoretical model UTAUT2.

Collaboration in Higher Education on Geographically Dispersed Locations: A Postphenomenological Study2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Technological advancements reshape societies at large and with that changes in behavior and the way in which people live and work follow. Education is no exception; technology enables students to attend courses independent of time and place. This thesis attempted to explore and develop an understanding of how students who study at a distance in higher education use technology to collaborate and how they experience collaboration. The philosophical base is postphenomenology and both interviews and observations have been conducted in order to collect data. Findings showed that a range of technologies were used to collaborate; both technologies for communication, storing of documents, brainstorming and screen sharing. Only the initial contact between fellow students were made through the technology that the university itself provided whereas the continued communication often took place elsewhere, chosen by the students. Although emerging technologies offer a vast range of opportunities for communication and collaboration, these were not always experienced as seamless. Diverging from previous literature where distance education has received critiques on not being able to fully replicate traditional studies; findings showed that the differences from traditional studies made students choose distance studies over traditional studies. Thus the value of distance studies relies on what actually differs them from traditional studies.

EFFICIENT HANDOVER OF INFORMATION IN SUPPLY CHAINS2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Absract: Information logistics is a question about moving information between different individuals or

systems to that place in time and space where a demand for the information arise. It is utilized

trough different sources of bearer that is distributed trough different channels in an optimal way.

How to make it without distorting the information in the interface between different participants?

This report is exactly about that.

The report has resulted in the Information Quality Model (IQM) and the Information Quality

    Process (IQP).

IQM is a model for evaluation of information that explains which characteristics that affects the

efficiency of information. IQM is built on Aspects - Characteristics – Questions.

If we for example have right information and we can deliver to right place in right time but with a

poor layout the efficiency still can be low. This leads to that we can state that all the stated aspects

with its belonging characteristics must be paid attention to get a good quality in the in the

    interfaces.

IQP Is a process showing how to handle and build up processes for collecting and processing

of information with a method that will secure the quality.

The method is built on an analyze phase where frames are created first for what should be collected

and how it should be done and an executing phase where information is filled in, in accordance

to to the rules that was set up in the analyze phase.

IQM and IQP form a solution that together illuminates the whole process of the information delivery

    in a unique way.

The research method is mainly based on cases built on the authors empirical experiences.

Pedagogik och Lärande: Infact - En grafisk inlärningsprocess2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report of 10 credits is a C – level essay in informatics.

The report presents the result of our investigation. The purpose is to answer our problem statements:

“How does computer-based graphical pedagogical tools work compared to traditional teaching aids? What is the users view upon the content? Is the information too hard or too easy? Does the structure work better than the traditional website design?”

Infact is a system that has as its primary goal to present information in a pedagogical way to let users of all ages and sexes learn from the contents. The information shown on the web page www.forskning.se is about Swedish and international research and the sites primary target users are high school students.

In our investigation we asked a total of sixteen students divided into three groups a number of questions where after we started a discussion that we hoped would yield some answers about Infact and the homepage in general.

Our main conclusion is that Infact is a good tool to use side by side with the textbooks and the traditional teaching aids. The advantages of Infact are according to us the good navigation system that gives a good overview of an area of expertise. This kind of overview is hard to achieve with traditional textbooks. The animations and the text make it easy to learn and it also makes Infact to a specialized tool for teaching specific knowledge.

Infact has some limitations. A short summary of these is that Infact must be used on a computer with a relatively fast Internet connection and certain programs must be installed before usage. We have also presented some suggestions for improving the system to the project team at www.forskning.se.

Beskrivning av informationsflöde och identifiering av riskområden: En fallstudie på Strålfors Svenska AB2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The report is written from the point of three different perspectives. Out of these perspec-tives I identify a number of risks based on the information I gather from four chosen busi-ness processes, witch are purchase, prepress/repro, planning, and production. The aim of the report is to identify the risks that are connected to the way the personnel are working within the four chosen processes today. By identifying the risks they later can be minimized and taken to consideration of the company. After changing and working with eliminating risks the processes will be armed for future threats and demands, mainly internal since fo-cus is placed on the four specific business processes.

The information for this report is collected through interviews with process owners, gath-ering of internal documents in forms of descriptions and process overviews. The question at issue in the report is supported by theory that mainly is picked from course literature that is connected with the three visual angles. The conclusions are that Strålfors Svenska AB has a number of identified risks within the business processes. Furthermore, there are also risks identified between the processes. The collaboration between processes are not optimized and constitute a risk in it self. The main conclusion is that the personnel have not quit the old way of working and therefore have not adapted to more effective ways to handle information and optimized the everyday work. The general problems that I can ob-serve from the risks are the inconclusive way the collaboration work between the selected business processes. Furthermore, the old way of keeping the work journal in paper form is a problem since the information regarding orders will continue to increase and the amount of information will be to difficult to handle in the old way.

Användning av NoSQL- och Relationsdatabaser: En undersökning av användarvänlighet och inverkan på arbetseffektivitet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The authors of this bachelor thesis have completed the information logistics program and they had the will to influence the ongoing technical development in health care. The different diabetes receptions in Sweden works in different speeds with the development of e-health services such as web-based bookings. The three County Councils Blekinge, Kronoberg and Kalmars opinions about the introduction of web-based bookings were collected through interviews with twelve diabetes nurses from nine receptions. The purpose was to find out what conditions and contradictions that the employees of the receptors had experienced at the time of introduction or when the decision about the introduction was made. The purpose was also to show some tips and advice for receptions that is planning to introduce web-based bookings.

The theory Diffusion of Innovations was used to analyze the results based on factors such as the innovations attributes, time for implementation, communication channels that were used and the social systems effect on the implementation. Even though four of the total nine receptions had introduced, or plans on introducing web-based bookings, none of them had actually implemented web-based bookings into a permanent change where the technology is used as planned. The failure to implement web-based bookings could be due to the many contradictions that has been pointed out by the informants. One of the most significant contradictions was the complexity because the majority of the informants considered the technology to be difficult to learn, hard to grasp that web-based bookings was, and hard to understand what it would be used for. This could have been happened due to the fact that the employees did not have a chance to test or observe the system before the introduction. Another crucial contradiction was the lack of demand of web-based bookings from the receptions patients. This is an interesting result because the informants also described many benefits from the patient's point of view. The results of this study also showed some benefits and tips for a successful implementation. Some good conditions was the physical communication regarding web-based bookings and the introduction, that the managers and management showed support for the change and that the receptions saw a need for web-based bookings and they also considered the technology to have more advantageous than the prior art. The authors also suggest that further studies as to why patients choose not to use e-health services, such as web-based bookings, even though they are available.

Kommunikationseffektivitet: Waste och kommunikationskanalens påverkan2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The report is based on a case study made at a product producing company in the spring of 2016. The report is a bachelor thesis and is written by students from information logistic programme at Linnaeus University.

The purpose of the thesis is to study what the effect of the choice of communication channel and waste could have on the employees at the company. Background to the study is that communication is a broad and important field where there is insufficient research on how waste and choice of communication channels affects communication effectiveness and efficiency. Development of new communication channels is faster than the studies about them and therefore lacks important information how and for what the new channels should be used for. This gap makes this study relevant.

The theories that have been used in this study are Media richness theory [MRT] and Lean administration. These have been combined and used to show how the communication effectiveness and efficiency could improve if the company uses structured choice of channels for communication.

The approach of the study has been qualitative with an abductive emphasis where the result comes from interviews with the employees at the company. The study is only carried out in the office at the company and will not include any other areas. The case study shows that there are deficits in the communication and that it affects communication effectiveness and efficiency at the office. The choice of channels to communicate through is done individually today. This because the employees are missing the big picture. The study has identified that a standardization of the communication would improve the communication effectiveness and efficiency. The result has been identified by using theories while analysing and discussing the result of the interviews.

Bättre processer och mätsystem inom den grafiska industrin: Produktivitetsförbättringar med stöd av informations- och produktionslogistik2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Att planera personalfrånvaro2008Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A new information system is not seldom a costly project. Designing and specifying requirements for a new system can be difficult from several aspects and management and staff can sometimes resist such changes. Poorly defined requirements and poor communication between users, developers and other stakeholders can contribute to software launch failure. By understanding the users' needs, knowledge and insights about the business, one can achieve success with the implementation and development of a new information system. Interviews and observations of participants have been used in this study to investigate how users perceive the current system and what needs and wishes the users have. The empirical data is collected from a medium-sized company where a case study was conducted focusing on their inventory management system and its users. Interviews and participatory surveys were conducted on site in Gothenburg and Stockholm, Sweden. The theoretical frame of reference is taken from the Information System Success Model (ISSM) which shows which qualities are important for the success of an information system and what factors exists for them. ISSM has been supplemented with Parasuraman, Zeithaml and Berry's factors for good quality of service and Wang, Reddy and Kon's factors for good information quality. Through a case study, criteria for these factors were identified. In addition, the criteria have been viewed from a usability perspective in order to deepen the understanding of the users' needs. The qualitative data collection has been analyzed through an affinity chart and categorized according to the factors proposed by the theory. The focus of the study is on the system and information qualities, but it was not possible to exclude service quality completely. The criteria that were identified largely had to do with how information was found and how complete it was. The stability of the system today was sufficient as the information was secured in several different ways, however the information was not always correct or complete. The user-friendliness of the system has great potential for improvement if the system becomes more flexible. One limitation in the system today is that it is text-based and which makes the information difficult to access and less clear to users. Inadequate help features and clear error messages also emerged as a problem according to the users. Today, the users need to use other systems for communication and personal notes, which users would have liked to avoid for seamless use. It also emerged that the hierarchical database structure used today makes the information system lock down for other users.

    Abstract [en]

Information Logistics’ has presented itself as an intellectual and professional domain addressing the question of timely providence of the right information. A question that emerges then is: What is Information Logistics? To answer this question, a comprehensive review of research publications was conducted, where ‘Information Logistics’ was featured in the publication title. A detailed analysis of the content of these publications identified eleven different research directions, where five are currently active, all in Europe. Among various findings, the results show that these research directions have been pursued independently of each other, addressing different kinds of research questions and contexts, utilising different research approaches, and therefore generating a variety of unrelated research results. All the reviewed research here shows that there are numerous unmet empirical needs in our human and social affairs, as well as a need for intra-disciplinary developments, which calls for a joint mobilisation of the research efforts.

    Abstract [en]

Our human and social affairs operate inherently various modes of information sharing; in this we frequently encounter instances where the needed information is not provided to the needing actor, at the right time and cost, and in the right format. To this end, an Information Logistics Research Program has been formulated, grounded both in current research findings and in the actual needs and opportunities of organizations and individuals. The aim of the program is to guide a long term and comprehensive research efforts by indicating the key research domains to be addressed. The formulated research program proposes the following four key research frontiers for Information Logistics: the Information Logistics Operational Models, the Information Logistics Business Models, the Information Needing Actor, and the Information Logistics Foundations. The proposed Research Program also provides suggestions for how to research the defined frontiers.

This final Chapter represents the responsibility, the privilege but also the aspiration of the two editors of this Gunilla Bradley Festschrift. The aspiration here is no less than to identify a key message that emerges out of the contributions in this volume considered as a whole. In other words, the question here is: what do all this research and reasoning say to us? Of course, each reader of this Volume will derive her or his own interpretation and thus also a key message, which we only see as the richness offered by this Festschrift. Therefore, the key message presented here must be regarded only as one possible message that is formed by the two editors’ own predispositions: intellectual, cultural, motivational, and other.

Från luddig verklighet till strikt formalism: Utveckling av en metod för den semantiska webben2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Internet is the world’s largest source of information, and it is expanding every day. It is possible to find all kind of information as long as you know how and where to look for it, but still it is only the words itself that are searched for. We have with this essay tried to find an approach that makes it possible to give the word a meaning or a context.

We have, as a starting point used the Socrates method, which is a method that breaks down texts into its smallest elements and forms activities. We have redone these activities to ontologies by forming general and specific descriptions of the activities. The ontologies are meant to create a common language for as well humans as computers, where meaning and context are built in.

After we have created our ontologies we used Web Ontology Language, OWL, which is the ontology language that is considered being closest to a standard. It has been developed for the semantic web, and that is the ultimate objective of our essay. The semantic web is meant to be an extension of the existing web, and it will include comprehension for computers.

We have become conscious that the semantic web would be a great improvement for both humans and computers, since it will be a lot easier to find the information you are looking for.

    Abstract [en]

The main objective of this thesis is to study how the structures of a sell dialog, via a web shop, should be designed in order to support and inspire the customer. To get the answer to this question I use a qualitative and quantitative method. The qualitative method is applied in connection with different interviews. The quantitative method is used to analyze different answers given from those who are interviewed. I also use the deductive method due to my interest of studying how reality can relate to the theories with the choice of the subject.

Moreover, this thesis is structured by three main perspectives; company, customers and techniques. The theoretical part of the thesis includes definitions and theories about electronic business, customers’ behaviour and technique, UML (Unified Modelling Language), which is a visual syntax for visualising, specifying, constructing and documenting system engineering, and UP (Unified Process), which is a method that complements UML. Furthermore, the empirical part of the thesis includes interviews with Chris Jangelöv and Patrik Cardell (Visma Spcs), who are representing the companys’ perspective on a sell dialog via a web shop. For the customers’ perspective on the subject, I collect and outline the interviews from Visma Spcs customers. Moreover, I review the interview with David Nadel, where he discusses the UML and UP techniques and also electronic business in general.

As for the results, I come to the conclusion that a web shop should be structured from a customer´s perspective and his/her inquiries concerning the products and services. UML and UP, however, are techniques that focus on the structuring of data and processes without taking the developing dialogue with the customer into serious account. These techniques do not address issues of why a web shop is used as it is, UML and UP only apply what a web shop can look like and how it could be used. Therefore, I argue that there is a lack of connection between the UML and UP techniques and the real live user and actual use. I also reached the conclusion that there should be three main building blocks when structuring a sell dialog via a web shop. These are; structure, information and navigation.

IT-baserat DNA-register: Hur skulle ett heltäckande IT-baserat DNA-register kunna införas i Sverige för att acceptans av folket?2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The most significant innovation enables the realization of far greater human potential. The catalyst of such creativity in higher education is the acquisition of new knowledge and the living of new experiences. Then, within innovation and incubation environments, new thinking enriches knowledge handed down from previous generations, enlivens contemporary lives and informs future growth. Emergent knowledge encourages recognition of the limitations of traditional academic disciplines, exploration of new interdisciplinary frontiers, and, from this, novel transdisciplinary insights that unlock human potential and improve human conditions.

In response, the University for Business and Technology intends to build collaboration environments to enable discovery and access, interpretation and analysis, creation and sharing of knowledge. These aspirations recognize the synergies possible when individual discovery is reinforced by collective inquiry with the shared purpose of using information to learn to create knowledge together. Further, this UBT planning initiative acknowledges that societal progress, whether local or global, ultimately depends on catalyzing, fortifying, and affirming human inquiry. So enabling environments will place humans at the center of the knowledge creation spaces and places that aim to advance participant capabilities to meet the demands of working in a global marketplace and living in a global society.

    Abstract [en]

In setting the institutional vision for University for Business and Technology in 2001, founder Dr. Edmond Hajrizi sought to educate Kosovo students to become active contributors to the society and in the workplace, within the country, the Balkans region, and beyond. The UBT Knowledge Center initiative extends the founding vision of national development through higher education. Since local knowledge, identity, and learning are necessarily situated, Kosovar students, faculty, staff, and administrators serve as topical experts and international educators from Sweden and the United States serve as design facilitators. Participatory design commenced in April 2017 when international faculty from Sweden and the United States co-taught a graduate level course, Information Systems Analysis, Design, and Modelling, at the Pristina campus. Working with UBT administrators, directors, managers, and librarians, students worked in teams to co-design three essential parts of a holistic Knowledge Center ecosystem: a digital environment to advance local knowledge visibility, an organizational environment to enhance boundary crossing collaboration, and a digital academic library environment to enable discovery of and access to published academic scholarship. Following these ‘learn by doing’ instructional activities, exploratory knowledge management discussions produced a Knowledge Center concept paper in July 2017, with funding from the Fulbright Specialist Program. The white paper recognizes the social context of learning – that knowledge is acquired and understood through action, interaction, and sharing with others. It thereby anticipates the social relationships necessary for information exchange and knowledge creation, oftentimes enabled by technology, for knowledge incubation in the university and beyond. This collaborative design approach anticipates continuing to convene multidisciplinary conversations and to integrate interdisciplinary coursework into realization of the University’s founding knowledge vision which recognizes the critical importance of developing new and more complex ways for connecting people, information, and technology in the university and with the society. In response, the UBT Knowledge Center aims to foster knowledge creation which curates and preserves intellectual, cultural, national, and regional resources for future generations.

Fakturabedrägerier: En studie om upptäckandet och motverkandet av fakturabedrägerier inom redovisningsbranschen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Influence of soft materials on student engagement with STEM: Combination of technology, programming, and textiles in a maker movement activity2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

While the computer programing becomes a fundamental skill in the last century, it has been globally acknowledged that there is a decline in number of graduates in disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Many scholars have been addressing this lack of interest and studied student engagement with STEM through variety of engagement programs and activities. In this master thesis as an exploratory qualitative study, technology and programing are blended together in a workshop hosting students of age 12-13 towards the development of their enthusiasm and engagement with STEM. During the activity, students used Makey Makey toolkit and Scartch programming language by application of textiles as soft material to investigate how this combination impact the engagement, and in what ways soft materials influence it. The study results in the light of Flow theory showed that four attributes of attention, motivation, engagement and social interaction pursued in the workshop. Textiles, as a mediator by expanding the flow state boundaries make the activity softer to encourage students being engaged in it, particularly from a gender perspective.

Biometri vid fysisk access: En jämförande studie mellan ansiktsigenkänning och fingeravtrycksavläsning2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today’s society, people often find themselves in situations where they need to be identified;for example when we buy alcohol, need to use an ATM or log on to our e-mail account. The most common methods today that are used for these kinds of matters are antiquated, and in

the meantime, criminals all over the world get more sophisticated. Companies invest billions every day in order to protect their interests. Maybe it’s time that we finally give biometrics the

    attention that it deserves.

This essay aims to describe the biometric methods that are available today, find some of the most effective when it comes to physical access and make a comparison. Face recognition and fingerprint scanning will be described more thoroughly. Pros and cons will be analyzed and the theory will be linked to interviews with three Swedish organisations.

Patientsäker läkemedelshantering: Användning av informationssystemet Cosmic vid delning av läkemedel2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Today imaging is more popular than ever. More pictures will be published in different ways since the market offers more, better and simpler cameras. Digital imaging is more than just a popular time-killer, it has become a way to communicate. Whatever their intended use, it is required a lot from the programs and systems that handle digital images. There is a great need, but also a requirement in many industries. Previous research shows that there is a gap of knowledge in imaging from a user-centered perspective. This essay is about imaging based on a user-centered approach with a focus on user experience and information architecture in the world of digital photo libraries. A positive user experience requires great user flow. The user shouldn’t have to be interrupted in their work due to a poor structure of the interface. Irritation and frustration should be avoided. Interfaces that manage other types of files and interfaces located on the Web and in "the cloud" have been delimited in this essay. The purpose of this essay is to identify important factors when categorizing and managing images for contributing to a better experience and a better user flow. The company Meriworks AB has given the authors the task of evaluating and investigating the interface for ImageVault, a digital library of images. A number of design principles have been created based on the theories that the essay contains. These design principles formed the basis for the heuristic evaluation that was done to give the authors an overview of the interface. To get a more user-centered perspective, 18 interviews with existing users of the interface were carried out. Based on the theories of the essay interview questions were designed. Based on the interviews personas and scenarios were created, to the result in a number of mockups showing future functionality and structure of the interface. The study has focused very much on evaluating an interface based on user perspective and how the structure is built in an interface that manages digital images. The authors aimed to determine how to meet the user's needs and goals and designing an interface that manages digital photos in a better way with the help of information architecture and user flow. During the study, a number of factors have been identified which are considered important for the categorization and management of images in digital photo libraries. These factors are the result, based on the theoretical framework of the essay and the data collection of the case study together with the mockups created. These factors may be the basis for developing interfaces that deal with digital imaging. Further research is needed to find out the validity of the factors, but also to examine whether these factors need to be supplemented further.

Blockchain for Education Records: An interpretive research on university students’ perceptions2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research aims to explore students’ perceptions and their desired features on the use of blockchain technology for the management of education records. A literature review formed the basis of the theoretical background of this work by allowing to explore how education records are managed nowadays and the potential for the use of blockchain technology in this area, as well as the importance of user-centred design in order to achieve a higher user-acceptance.

A qualitative research study encompassing a focus group interview with Linnaeus University students was conducted to answer the research questions. Computer assisted thematic data analysis yielded five key themes: current usage of university education records, understanding how blockchain works, sustainability of blockchain, security of blockchain and implementation of blockchain for education records.

The discussion relates the empirical findings to the theoretical background of the research. Participants were generally positive towards the use of blockchain for the management of education records and saw it as one of the potential future solutions. Nevertheless, they voiced some reservations regarding the high energy consumption, costs and security towards a possible use of the blockchain technology. Therefore, careful implementation would be needed, with increased focus on usability, solving some security and sustainability issues and ensuring a fair and transparent access model.

This master thesis contributes to the current body of knowledge within informatics by empowering students to share their point of view with regards to possible development of IT solutions based on blockchain technology. As found through this master thesis research, systems for the management of educational records have an impact on person’s life long past finishing a course or a degree, affecting people’s everyday experience in many areas of life and students would like to be included in any future development discussions. Therefore, the research study provides insights which could be used in the future in two ways: firstly, to achieve a more user-centred design of education records management systems and secondly, on the students’ perception of the use of blockchain technology in this area of life.

The Pedagogical progression within MSI – Based upon The Bologna Process and UPC.

In a near future several of the European countries will begin working after new guidelines concerning a declaration called the Bologna process. Everything will be done one step at a time and the declaration will change the way the students are being graded, all this for the sake of making the European labour-market more

opened for all of its millions of students.

In Växjö this process is in the making, but to adapt to the future demands the school must also change its ways of teaching.

To increase its quality the University has put together a procedure of actions to improve the pedagogical working method in all its institutions. In this essay we would like to elucidate how the work with the Bologna process is proceeding within the institution of Mathematics and System Engineering and what

they do improve their pedagogical teaching. By doing a qualitative case study on the student at the Computer Science Program we wish to find the answers to our questions.

Social interaktion via den digitala lärmiljön mellan student och lärare.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Användbarhet och nytta med digitala kunskapstest: Inom kommunal utbildningsverksamhet2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

E-learning is growing and have a significant role in today’s digital society. The researchers were introduced in a digital knowledge test used by 126 municipalities in Sweden, to find the correct study level in individuals. The research were about what benefit and usability these digital knowledge tests has within the municipalities educational activities -SFI, municipality adult education or high schools orientation programme. DeLone and McLean’s Information System Success Model was used in this study and focused on the concepts of usability and utility that also are defined in the report. A quantitative approach was selected to answer the questions about if the digital knowledge test was considered to be useful and what benefit they contributed. Questionnaires were sent to all municipalities in which one person per municipality was able to answer the questions. The results showed that there were both advantage and disadvantage with the digital knowledge test. It also showed that the tests currently only is used by 120 municipalities instead of the 126 municipalities that once purchased the tests. The tests were various useful as some municipalities used it often and others more rarely. One advantage with the test was that they contributed to the benefit because they were seen as an auxiliary tool to find the right level of knowledge of each student. For some municipalities the knowledge tests were considered to be insufficiently comprehensive because oral tests did not exist in the system. The conclusion was that the digital knowledge tests to the greater part was useful and contributed to various types of benefit to the municipalities educational activities.

    Abstract [en]

Smartphones is a tool that we use everyday. Smartphones is being used for all kinds of different things, from making calls, to sharing our lives thru social media, to playing games. Smartphones is a without a doubt an important part of our lives and it´s not likely to become any less important.

Now a school has openly released a statement that says they are prohibiting smartphones during classes. With the argument that the students becomes to stressed by their smartphone. This is a big step to take and the question is if it´s the right decision. The purpose of this study is to examine and describe what the underlying arguments are for the school to forbid smartphones during classes.

To make it possible for us to achive the purpose of this study we have choosen to use an deductive approach and a qualitative method for gathering our data. An qualitaitve content analysis on swedish daily press and personal interviews are the methods that have been conducted.

The result of this study shows that the views regarding smartphone ban is different both among the respondants, but also in the qualitative content analysis. Teachers handle smartphone ban different and the views regarding this are different. One conclusion which is brought up is that it´s up to the teachers themselfs to decide how they want to handle their classroom, but central guidelines will need to be decided.

Studie av planerings- och produktionsprocess i sågverksbranschen2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The sawmill industry is a relative fragmented industry that is in an economic upswing and

with a hard competition. The customers have high demands on their suppliers and the high

customer demand make it necessary for the companies to make a streamlining in planning

and production. For that reason it is very important that the planning- and production

processes aren’t to complex and with a simple structure.

The purpose of this report is to study and map out a marked out part of a planning- and

production process, from adjust works to final delivery, at a company in the sawmill industry.

Different methods have been used for the report, among others interviews and subordinated

    material.

We have mapped out a marked out part of the planning- and production process at the

Company. This part we have studied, and we have analysed the process it self and other

    things connected to the process.

We see the planning- and production process in the Company as complex. The process and

the people that work within it should get positive things out of a process mapping. We

bring up and discuss the fact that it is a key person that has the most knowledge about our

part of the process. We mean that they have to make much of this key persons knowledge

explicit for the rest of the employees. If the Company start to use a MRP system they have

the opportunity to relieve pressure of the key person and in the same time give more of the

employees the opportunity to gain increased knowledge about the planning- and production

    process

The Company can now, with the help of our process mapping, carry out a process analysis

for their processes. They should also implement a new planning system because it will help

to make the planning process more efficient. We also think that the Company should implement

a MRP system because it would take the pressure of the key person and it will

make it easier for the Company to divide the knowledge that exists within it.
