Chick Lit in Historical Settings by Frida Skybäck2015In: Journal of Popular Romance Studies, ISSN 2159-4473, E-ISSN 2159-4473, no 5.1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Chick lit is mostly contemporary portrayals of single women in cities. The Swedish author Frida Skybäck writes “chick lit in corsets”, that is, chick lit in a historical setting, and she writes primarily for teenage girls. Her two novels Charlotte Hassel (2011) and Den vita frun (2012) balance between chick lit jr. and romance. They can also be read as historical novels, and in my article I highlight how Skybäck has consciously played with the different genres to convey a feminist message and to strengthen young readers.

    Abstract [en]

Margareta Petersson took her doctorate in 1988 with the dissertation Indien i svenska reseskildringar 1950-1975 [India in Swedish Travel Accounts 1950-1975]. In that study Petersson problematizes travel writing as a genre and discusses whether it should be regarded as documentary or ction. Furthermore, she focuses on the picture of India that is conveyed in a number of travel accounts, how they are tied to their time, and what values and patterns of thought, here called norms, are established. In my article I proceed from part of Petersson’s analysis to study how travels to India have been described in some Swedish books for children. I consider travel literature as a genre with reference to child readers, and I examine the context in which the narratives arose. I also examine how the image of India is constructed in these accounts and how this image is coloured by the genre af liation of the narratives and the time when the story was written.

Frihet i en liten burk?: Om flexibilitet och struktur i nätbaserad undervisning2017In: HumaNetten, E-ISSN 1403-2279, no 39, p. 6-13Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Västerlandets moraliska defekter - sjutton författare skriver om synderna i vår tid2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract in English

Seventeen students in Creative Writing at the Växjö University who terminated in January 2005 published chosen texts in an anthology by the name Förflyttningar (Movements). The aim of my study is to analyse how they explore and describe our time in the western world. The question is; what is being written now and here?

I have chosen as theoretical background the Italian philosopher, Umberto Galimberti, who has made a study of the West from moral and ethical perspective. His conclusion is that we live in a world with seven new sins. The new sins are collective defects within all westerners. Umberto Galimberti has the new ones listed, they are consumerism, conformism, boldness (unshyness), sex addiction, sociopathy, denial and emptiness.

All texts from the seventeen writers are described in a few lines with a following general view of my impression of theme in the three genres, lyrics, short stories and novels.

My analysis gives as a result that the seventeen writers in the Northern Hemisphere, in no way have a different opinion of the world than the Italian philosopher has. The seven new sins are all here among us and they are all described in varied way and fashion, but they do exist and are living in the texts published in Växjö last year. In fact, the vices spark the world.

    Abstract [en]

What is the relation between literature and philosophy and what can we learn from it? Is there something about the novel and its language, fiction and narrative that separates it from philosophical litterature? In what way is knowledge about this useful to us, and is it possible to use fiction for the understanding of philosophy?

This study makes an attempt to shed some light on the by no means obviuos distinction between philosophy and literature. The aim is to understand what, if in fact there is something that separates philosophy from literature, there is about the distinction that makes it possible for us to separate the ideas in literature from philosophical ideas, and in what way we can use the novel, or fiction in its widest meaning, to understand philosophy. When teaching philosophy you´re often required to make the abstract tangible. But if there´s a misconception about the distinction in what makes philosophical literature philosophical, then maybe there is something to learn from literature, or, at least, something about the fiction and its aesthetics, that makes it easier for us to relate to and understand, for example, the theories that are debated in moral philosophy.

There are some philosophers who have used the form of fiction to make their thoughts on philosophical questions understandable. In fact you still find literary aesthetics in essays, reports and articles written in the subject of philosophy, but also in most of the scientifical studies presented worldwide. As there still is something about the words and the language that we already know of that makes it easier for us when trying to make the abstract understandable, than it would if we were constantly required to make up new words just to explain what we mean. The metaphor is, for example, very useful when explaining the phenomenon that we call "black holes". Not to mention the "quark", which was founded by Murray Gell-Mann, but borrowed from a poem by James Joyce. There is something about the language and our understanding that just makes it easier to use what we already know of, when trying to explain our ideas. The leg of a chair isn´t in fact a leg, but in a way the four sticks, that are used to keep the board, or the flat thing we in fact sit on, from falling to the ground, resembles the things the connects our feet to the rest of our body. So, evidently there is something about literature, and the use of the language that we already understand, that makes it a great way to make our ideas intelligible. What is it, if we already know that many philosophers, Plato, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Sartre e.t.c., used literature, or at least literary aesthaetics, as a way to make their philisophical ideas intelligible, that justifies separating philosophy from literature? Isn´t there in fact something about the distinction that is rather unclear, and wouldn´t knowledge about this be quite useful when understanding and teaching philosophy. This study attempts to find out, as one investigates the theories behind it, and put them to test using "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky when teaching moral philosophy to a class of philosophy students.
