Mellanstatligt samarbete mot människohandel i Europa: – en studie om mål, åtgärder och resultat2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper provides a study about human trafficking with sexual motives performed in European states and the measures taken from national, international and Non-Governmental organizations with the purpose to oppose human trafficking. According to the UN human trafficking has increased and shows tendencies to continue escalating, regardless of the measures taken by various organisations. In this study, four countries with associations to human trafficking have been chosen and organisations related to these countries are studied. The purpose is to inquire into how these organisations work against human trafficking and which objectives and guidelines these organisations strive for together with their values. The aim is to find out which result the organizations efforts gets and if, according to my hypothesis, the efforts oppose themselves. If so, what could be a possible explanation?

The central conclusions after performing this study is that the policies from international organisations given to institutions at state level are not always implemented. There are also difference in the measures taken by each state and their valuations. Every actor’s behaviour in a network is important and scarcity in one actors behaviour leads to a weakened result. One of the studied states has shown tendencies of disregarding the issue which effects collaboration between the studied organizations.

Is smoking and clothing doing any good for Mozambique: a study of cashcrops and its effects in northern Mozambique2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The question of the cultivation of cash crops in Africa south of Sahara has long been debated. We have examined the situation of cash crop cultivation for the peasant of northern Mozambique. What factors are needed for a peasant to be able to choose to cultivate cash crops and what are the effects on the peasant’s situation when cultivating cash crops? With help from James C. Scott’s theories about food security and the safety first principle see how the possibilities are for the peasant to grow cash crops.

By using the Lewis two-sector model we have examined the possibilities for a peasant of northern Mozambique abilities to make the transition from the agricultural sector to the industrial sector. We found this model insufficient to explain the transition of labour in the Mozambican society. The model needs two additional sectors to fully explain the transition in Mozambique. These sectors, cash crop and semi-industrial, are needed because the transition is too far in terms of productivity and technology. An extensive cash crop production is therefore important for the economic development. We have also found that food security is important for the peasants in order to start growing cash crops.

Yttrandefrihet eller utrikespolitik?: En diskursanalys av Muhammedkarikatyrerna i svensk dagspress2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze the discussion on the publication of twelve caricatures of the prophet Muhammad, in two Swedish newspapers – Dagens Nyheter and Sydsvenska Dagbladet. The caricatures were originally published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, in September 2005. Even though the violent protests and attacks against Danish interests gained major media attention in Sweden few – if any – major Swedish newspapers published the caricatures.

Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), a theory and a method that critically examines the relationship between text, the discourse practice in which text is produced and consumed, and the wider social practice, this study examines why Swedish newspapers chose not to publish any caricatures.

The study concludes that the relationship between orders of discourse continuously affect, and is also affected by, Swedish media content. However, CDA cannot present the “truth” behind the decision not to publish the caricatures. It can only draw hypothetical conclusions, in which it is suggested that – due to the fact that the powers of media institutions continue to grow – the media is forced to take on a greater responsibility as a political actor. Thus, Swedish newspapers decided not to publish in order for Sweden not to become involved in that international conflict.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to research the level of condition and requirements of democracy which faces states applying for a membership in the European Union. The focal point was to research the levels of democracy requirements on two set enlargements which are the cases of the 1981 and 1986 enlargements together with the 2004 and 2007. The states that did reach the goal of becoming member states had similar political backgrounds that made them suitable for a most- similar system study. By using my theoretical framework which consists of democracy theories, together with the chosen method was I able to find answers to my research questions when examining the material. The result of the study is that even though the condition might have been quite similar but the reality of them was different. The EU was softer in their demands towards the first case of enlargement then in the second one which is further explained in this study.

Deltagandebaserad backcasting:En processorienterad metod att planera för en hållbar stadsutveckling: -Fallstudie Borlänge/Falun2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Motives of Aid Donors: A comparative study of the aid allocation of Denmark, Norway and Sweden2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay seeks to discern the motives of the aid allocation of western governments. The aim of the essay is to find differences between three highly similar aid donors: namely Denmark, Norway and Sweden, by doing a comparative case study according to the most similar case method. The research has been conducted by analyzing material from two ministers of each government, the Foreign Ministers and Ministers for International Development, by using a motive-analysis method. Social constructivism and structural realism have been used as a theoretical explanation. These two theories have been helpful in understanding how International Relations work. The results showed that although the three countries were highly similar, they showed some crucial differences in their motivation for aid allocation, especially in the case of Denmark. Theoretically, this could be explained by social constructivism, i.e. that the states have different priorities and experiences.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the labour migration from Southern Europe to Sweden, and the changes in Swedish immigration policy between 1960 and 1972. The first part of the dissertation examines the role of the state in shaping the migration streams from Southern Europe to Sweden. From the beginning of the 1950s to 1966, Sweden’s borders were relatively open, and this facilitated a significant amount of immigration. A system of unregulated individual labour migration developed, where foreign citizens could enter Sweden as tourists and thereafter look for work and obtain a work permit. For a significant period of time there doesn’t seem to have been any strong opposition to this laissez-faire system. This all changed during the 1960s, however, when the liberal immigration regulations were called into question. An important factor was that immigration increased dramatically in the mid-1960s. In addition, the national composition of the migration streams to Sweden changed during these years. Immigration from Yugoslavia, Greece and also from Turkey increased, while the number of immigrants from the Nordic countries diminished. In connection with the changing immigration pattern, certain actors, such as the trade unions and Sweden’s central employment authority, AMS, called for more restrictive immigration regulations. Demands from the trade unions and AMS led to a more stringent immigration control in 1966, and again in 1967, when a new Swedish immigration policy was introduced.

Swedish research into changes in immigration policy during the 1960s often emphasizes the considerable influence of the trade unions on the policy shift. An argument put forward in this dissertation is that the intensification of immigration control not only reflected the demands of the trade unions, but that significant demands also came from within the state apparatus, and particularly from AMS. AMS was a relatively autonomous actor when the immigration regulations changed in 1966-1967, and its demands and knowledge regarding the influx of migrant labour made a significant contribution to the formation of the new immigration policy.

The second part of the dissertation investigates how industrial companies have shaped the migration streams from Southern Europe to Sweden. Immigrants from Yugoslavia and Greece were often recruited in order to perform the heavy and subordinate work in the manufacturing industries that native workers had either avoided or left at that particular time. The dissertation attempts to explain this concentration of Southern Europeans in subordinate positions in the manufacturing industries.

During the 1960s, Yugoslavs became the largest non-Nordic group in the migration streams to Sweden. How did Sweden become connected with this emigration country situated in the Mediterranean? A conclusion is that, to a great extent, the requirements and actions of industrial companies shaped the national composition of the migration streams to Sweden.

Att följa piskan eller hjärtat?: Partisammanhållningens utveckling i riksdagen efter personvalsreformens tillkomstIndependent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims at studying the development of the party cohesion in the Swedish national parliament, riksdagen, after the introduction of preference voting in the election of 1998. The party cohesion has been measured during parliamentary sessions before and after the reform.

The result of the cohesion during each of the sessions has then been compared towards each other. The cohesion was measured between the members of parliament viewed as a whole, and within the party groups during the different sessions.

The research method being used has been a quantified statistical voting analysis, making the comparisons of party cohesion during the different parliamentary sessions as easy as possible.

The main findings show an increment of the cohesion after 1998, both among the parliamentary members as a whole, and within the political parties. The result rejected the originally stated hypothesis, saying the party cohesion would decrease after the implementation of preference voting to the Swedish parliament.

Svensk dagspress framställning av Greta Thunberg och den globala klimatstrejken.: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av gestaltningar i dagspressen.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how the Swedish daily press Dagens Nyheter andSvenska Dagbladet during the period August 2018 until April 2019 portrays the youngactivist Greta Thunberg and the social movement and hashtag #Fridaysforfuture in theirarticles.

The analysis has been executed through a qualitative content analysis and framing theory. The results of the study is that both news papers portays Greta Thunberg based on twothemes; age and functional limitation. When it comes to the social movements the newspapers portrays it based on two themes; age and incentives. The conclusion of this studyis that Greta Thunberg is portrayed through two perspectives based on the fact that she isa child. One perspective is that she is an independent child who refuses to go to schooland listen to other adult people. The second perspective involves a normative child whois ruled by their parents.

The analysis results of the study also show that the #Fridaysforfuture movement is mainlyproduced on the basis that the movement consists of children and young people. Theparticipants of the movement are thus portrayed on the basis that they are children andyoung people.

Stegvis förändring för demokratisering i Kina-en möjlighet?2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to investigate the situation for democracy in China. The study raises two main questions. They are as follows: Are there obstacles to a democratization process in China? and Are there openings when it comes to a gradual change for democratization in China?

The theoretical framework consists of Robert A.Dahl´s Polyarchy theory, and in addition , five factors promoting democracy. Also the notion of an MDP-society (a modern, dynamic and pluralistic society) is looked upon. A qualitative case literature study has been the research method used.

The results of the study show that the obstacles consist mostly of the strong rule by the communist party, the CPC. This might even increase with time. And if it should fall, there might be other powerful groups prepared to rule the country. But there are also openings to a more democratic China.  A growing level of education, a growing economy, the existence of village elections, a developing judicial system and a change among values among the Chinese people indicates this direction. Also the emergence of the use of Internet and cellphones add a democracy promoting aspect to the case.

    Abstract [sv]

This study examines Romania’s way from being a candidate country, to full membership in the European Union in January 2007. The main focus is how the EU has handled the Human Rights accusations directed towards Romania, particularly in the area of Child Protection. The case is analyzed by using a maximalistic definition of democracy, examining the importance of social rights in a country’s ongoing process of democratization. The results of the study reveal that the European Union, throughout the years of accession negotiations, has imposed much pressure on Romania to fulfill the EU-criteria. It is also apparent that while the European Union accepted Romania as a new member state, and considered these serious child abuses to be solved, many other international organizations are still critical. The concluding chapter analyses the findings of the study, actualizing the questions of whether the children’s situation have vitally been improved and if the Romanian process of democratization has reached its consolidating phase.

Svensk asylpolitik: En studie kring styrning och långa handläggningstider på Migrationsverket2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Migration Board has during a long time had problems with long processing times for persons that apply for asylum. The government has set targets that investigation should not exceed 6 months although it is done in almost 70% of cases.

The study's aim has been to examine if steering can be linked together to long processing times and, if so, explain why. The intention has not been to provide a comprehensive picture of the problem but has defined itself to ensure steering impact. The study has been carried out by studying relevant governing documents, previous research and by interviews with administrators and decision-makers in two of the Migration Board asylum units.

The analyses of the study show that a combination of inadequate steering and inadequate resources have contributed to aggravate the implementation, which has lead to long processing times.

Sveriges hantering i praktik av EU:s regelverk om samordningen av medlemsländernas sociala trygghetssystem: En fallstudie av svenska offentliga instansers implementering och uppföljning2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay analyses how Swedish authorities implement the EU regulations on the application of social security schemes and, more specifically, when it comes to health care and sickness benefits. The research is based on a survey and several interviews and aims to answer how the lower echelons of the hierarchy work towards the implementation, what are their working conditions and how the authorities evaluate and optimize the implementation process.

The general conclusion of the study is that there are several flaws in the implementation process. The results have shown that there is a lack of resources as well as of tutoring and education amongst the actors. The complexity of the regulations does also seem to have influenced the process. Finally the results have shown that the public instances do not proceed to a systematic evaluation of the implementation process which has led to a bad communication between the different actors as well as to difficulties in improving the flaws in the implementation process.

En studie om ungdomars uppfattning kring demokrati, rättvisa & framtidstro i Värnamo kommun2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the end of the last century the interest for youth politics increased in Sweden. The causes for the increased interest were the more obvious youth politics questions and problems, for example the increased youth unemployment. In 1998 the government wrote down national goals and instructions for the youth politic work in a government bill (1998/99:115). This government bill describes how the youth politic work should be carried at a local level in the municipality.

The purpose with this study is to investigate young people, in Värnamo kommun, view of their own situation. The study´s focus lies om three main concept; democracy, justice and faith in the future. To carry through the study, I have used a qualitative method; literature studies and empiricism, in form of interviews with young people and municipal council in Värnamo kommun.

In the result of the study you can see that young people in Värnamo kommun quite well are satisfied with ther situation. The young people in the municipality believe in democracy but they really don´t know how to influence in the society. The municipal council tells that politicians are working for better information about how to influence for young people. They are also working to get young people to get more interest in politics. The young people have different background and they are conscious about how that effects their chances in life. The most of the young people have good faith in the future. They are not afraid of the unemployment.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how non-profit engagement influence voting in school election, but also how the school has influenced the pupils to vote and if there are any differences between a big and a small town.

The methods which have been used for this study are quantitative and qualitative, both questionnaires and interviews. To be able to see differences between a big and a small town the study was carried out in one school from each category of town.

By examine the empirical material and analyse it with theories which are used for this study we have come to the conclusion that there are no obvious differences between pupils in the big town and the small town. Pupils in both schools were pretty engaged in associations, though had the pupils from the small town some higher level of engagement. Moreover, both schools had a high participation for the election. The result of the study showed that there were no noticeable tendencies on if the pupils choose to vote depending on engagement in associations.

Furthermore, both schools were very engaged in the school election indeed. The small town school did not give a connection between the school’s engagement and the pupils’ willingness to vote. However the big town school had a greater connection between the school’s engagement and the pupils’ willingness to vote.

Attributionsstil och priming-effekt: En experimentell studie om välmående2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine differences between happy and unhappy people, with respect to individuals interpretations, their attributonal style and in what way the priming effect is related to their attributional style and well-being. The participants were 74 senior high school and 21 undergraduate college students. Participants were asked to read a short story, some words were in bold type, and thereafter for their subjective perception of the words in bold type loading and memory of them in a recognition list. Attributional style was operationalized with an own constructed instrument. The results show that happy individuals interpreted more words as positive than negative in comparission with unhappy individuals. No correlation between participants well-being and global or attributional style for negative events were found. Both groups showed a tendency to be more optimistic than pessimstic for positive events. No differences were found for either memory or priming of loaded words. In sum the results suggest that happy individuals tend to conceive the world more positive.

Determinants of Well-Being: An experimental Study Among Adolescents2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between hedonic and eudaimonic well-being in adolescents with respect to interpretation and memory for stimuli outside and inside autobiographical memory and affective personalities. A total of 70 male and 65 female high-school students with an age mean of 17.00 years (S.D. = .88) participated in the experiment. Well-being was measured as Subjective Well-Being (SWB) and Psychological Well-Being (PWB). Interpretation and memory was measured with recognition of words in a short story and recall of life events. Affective personalities were developed through PANAS. The results show self-acceptance and environmental mastery as the eudaimonic predictors of SWB. Adolescents with high levels of well-being remembered more positive life events and used mixed strategies to discriminate memory for words. Adolescents with high levels of well-being showed a positive priming effect and those with low levels a negative priming effect. Finally, Self-actualizing and self-destructive individuals emerged as the happy and unhappy personalities for both perspectives.

Konsten att matcha : - En sociologisk studie om ett bemanningsföretags relation till sina kundföretag2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the following paper is to exam the construction of space and its signification for sexuality in the contemporary. The thesis stands on threefold ground. Ontologically from a social constructions perspective and its view of sexuality, epistemology in the critical hermeneutics, meaning that its purpose is to explain and understand, and finally it takes its incipience in Foucault and his view of sexuality and discourse. In the following chapter the constructed society is deconstructed and presented on the basis of concepts as gender, sexuality, room and body. From this abstract image the text becomes more concrete introducing the different areas of the city. These areas (both abstract and concrete) are then related to each other. From this, the concrete construction of sexuality was examined. This chapter showed, amongst other thing, how places normally are constructed heterosexuality, whish explains the position as a forcing norm whish heterosexuality upholds. Thus the conclusion is drawn that the spatial construction, amongst other factors, are extremely relevant in the construction of sexuality.

Sexualitet, snusk och samvaro: En explorativ diskursanalys av sexualitet i samtiden2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the following paper is to exam the discourse of sexuality in the contemporary. The thesis takes its incipience in social constructionism and its view of sexuality. Earlier scientific research is presented; the history of sexuality is touched, and different kinds of social psychological perspectives on sexuality as well. Further more, the epistemological point of attack is hermeneutic and the method qualitative. The research project that was executed, discourse analysis, took its starting-point in the social constructionism perspective. Two books were chosen from the criteria, namely Louise Boije af Gennäs’ Stjärnor utan svindel och Kerstin Thorwalls’ Jag minns alla mina älskare och hur de brukade ta på mig. A concrete plan of execution of the discourse analysis was constructed and two discourses of sexuality were constructed from this: homo erotica and homo romantica. The discourse of homo erotica allude how sexuality in itself is constructed while homo romantica is rather about organization of society on the basis of heterosexual relationships. Both discourses are founded upon heterosexuality as norm. These discourses together constitute the contemporary sexuality.

Balansera Mera: Balanserad styrning i Vellinge kommun2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

During the last decade the public sector has been influenced by new ways of measuring performance and governing, taking inspiration from the private sector. The Swedish municipal community Vellinge has since 2004 adopted “The Balanced Scorecard” by Kaplan & Norton, measuring not only the financial parts but also other, important factors. The adoption took place since the Swedish government applied new demands on county councils and municipal communities through “God ekonomisk hushållning”. Critics points out that if the “The Balanced Scorecard” is to be adopted in the public sector, it has to be adjusted and changed to the specific public conditions.

This study aims to examine how the municipal community of Vellinge has adopted “The Balanced Scorecard” in its organization on the basis of the main question: “How has the municipal community of Vellinge used ‘The Balanced Scorecard’ to improve the financial and activity guidance”?

To reach a valid result interviews have been performed and empirically relevant material has been collected.

The study concludes that Vellinge has adopted “The Balanced Scorecard” with a mixture of following the original model and adaptation to own and public conditions. The adoption has helped Vellinge satisfy the demands on “God ekonomisk hushållning” through the new way of measuring both financial and activity aspects.

Keywords: Balanserad styrning, Offentlig sektor, Styrning, Vellinge kommun, God ekonomisk hushållning.

Koalitioner - ett kostsamt fenomen?: En studie koncentrerad till Sveriges kommuner2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Since the 2006 election the country of Sweden is governed by four Liberal and Conservative parties. Parties that by cooperating maintain power in office and forms a so called coalition. A coalition that not only can be seen at the national but also at the local level. According to pervious research coalitions that holds control of the seats in the government at the national level tends to increase the total expenditures compared to other types of government formations. Can a similar connection be seen at the local level? This the fundamental issue of this essay. The study is a multiple case study of the Swedish local governments and their expenditures. The purpose of the study is to examine if Swedish local governments governed by a coalition of parties tend to spend more money than other types of local government formations. The hypothesis is that coalitions tend to increase the local expenditures compared to other government formations in the local governments due to the result of previous research at the national level. The empiric investigation examine the Swedish local governments after the 1994 and 2006 elections. The government formations are then compared with different types of measures of local expenditure. The investigation shows that local governments governed by a coalition of parties not tend to have increased expenditures compared to local governments governed by other types of government formations.

    Abstract [en]

Over the last decades there has been a steady increase in the representation of women on the political arena. Despite of this there are still fewer women in comparison to men in political organs particularly at the municipal level. It is therefore of great importance to examine which different factors that tend to effect the female representation at this level. Doctor of philosophy at Umeå University Jessika Wide presented in a study from 2000 that the share of women in the municipal councils tended to depend upon cultural, socio-economical and political factors. Other scholars also mean that women have specific interests and therefore are more represented in some areas. This thesis has tested if these theories and results of earlier research also can explain female representation in municipal boards in Sweden at present fiscal year. This was done by formulating hypotheses which was tested via statistical measures and regression analyzes. The main findings where that presented theories and factors stated by earlier research in general could help us to explain the female representation also in municipal boards although the variations between the single municipals are huge. Therefore one should not jump to much large conclusions of these results. Although one could say that the findings in this thesis can serves as indicators on the road of explaining female representation in municipal boards.

Cultural Warfare and Trust: Fighting the Mafia in Palermo2008 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Här pekar forskarnas resultat i olika riktning.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

This article analyses whether it is possible to develop generalized trust through public action at the grass-root level. We will analyse the impact of seven public schools in Palermo, Sicily, a city that is largely dominated by organized crime. Hierarchical regression analysis shows that the most important school factors for the development of generalized trust are related to openness of school structures, fairness of institutions, the character of peer interaction and students’ participation in voluntary organized activities within the school premises. The positive effects of participation in voluntary school activities can be contrasted to the negative influence of participation in social groups outside the realm of the school. The analysis also shows a small but significant effect of the family’s socio-cultural level on generalised trust. The article uses unique panel data collected at two different occasions in Palermo, in 2002 and 2005. The students were 10-11 years old in the first panel wave and 13-14 years old in the second.

Fokus på mottagarna?: En analys av Krisberedskapsmyndighetens forskningsrapporter vid kriskommunikation2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the essay is to investigate how the term ’Third world’ is constructed in media. With this I intend to make a historical survey of the conception. With the help of Swedish newspapers and their description of the concept, I am going to answer the following questions: How is the concept ‘Third world’ constructed in script, in a historical context and in modern time? Is there a tendency of racism in the term?

The method I used was discourse analysis. To get further answer to my questions I used postcolonialism as a theoretical starting-point, whitch brings forth the effects and after-effects colonialism has on the identity and culture of the colonialised. The concept ‘Third World’ has gone from signifying a composition of countries that wanted to prove they stood neutral in the ‘Cold war’, to, during the latest centuries, consist of a very large group of people that are believed not to be able to take care of themselves an thereby needs to be brought up by the Western world. In order to this, social hierarchies are established along with hidden conditions of power, whitch you only can start breaking down by showing that they do exist.

    Abstract

Title: How does Europeanization effect Swedish alcohol policy? .

Titel: Hur påverkar Europeiseringen svensk alkoholpolitik?

Minor Thesis in Political Science, January 2008

    Author : Markus Gustafsson

    Tutor : Lennart Bergfeldt

    Växjö University

This essay will deal with the influence which Europeanization has on domestic politics. The case I have chosen is Swedish alcohol policy. Thus, the purpose is to explore whether observed changes in Swedish alcohol policy in the years 1993-2005 can be explained by Swedens´s membership in the European Union. To reach this purpose the following questions need to be answered:

    • What is europeanization?

    • How has Swedish alcohol policy changed from 1993 to 2005?

    • Is it possible to connect the changes in Swedish alcohol policy to a process of Europeanizationprocess?

The method in this essay has been a qulitative study of litterature. The theory has been europenization and its effects on domestic politics. To conduct the analyse an analyticalmodell have been used.

My conclusion shows rather clearly that a process of europeanization has been affecting the Swedish alcohol policy. Swedish authorities have been reluctant to change their alcohol policy in the liberal manner that was requested by the European Union, due to consideration for the public health. Traditionally, Swedish authorities have been forced by European Union law to accept significant changes.

Kulturell, administrativ eller funktionell region?  : En analys av Region Skåne och Västra Götalandsregionen2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish regions are new phenomena, from the start from the new regionalism which started in the 1980´s. The purpose of the thesis is to analyze Region Skåne and Västra Götalandsregionen to come to a conclusion which model of region they are and want to be by using theories of regional identity and identity of politics and see similarities and differences. My research question is: Which of cultural, administrative and functional region are Region Skåne and Västra Götaland striving to construct?

The methods I have used are qualitative text- and content analysis to analyze the regions, by using theories about regional identity and identity of politics. Furthermore, I am using some statistic from SOM-institutet to analyze the regional identity in the regions.

The result show that Region Skåne is constructing a cultural region, because of their strong regional identity and that the politicians are using identity of politics to combine the citizens. The citizens feel a strong fellowship and share a common history and culture.

However Västra Götalandsregionen is an administrative region, there their regional identity is low and do not have a common history and culture. There the politicians’ focus is on administrative things, as research and communication.

Klimatförändringen och dess konsekvenser för samhället, i Sverige och världen: Consequences of climate change on the Swedish society and on a global scale2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The industrial revolution in the western world and later on in East Asia has only been possible due to extensive use of fossil fuel, like petroleum and coal. This has resulted in increased concentrations of carbondioxid in the atmosphere. Carbondioxid is the most important greenhouse gas and increasing levels in the atmosphere are underway to cause a global climate change. The focus of this thesis was to study how societies in Sweden as well in other countries will be affected in the long term by a climate change. The other countries investigated are the Netherlands in North Western Europe and the North African Sahel, including a number of states. The climate change will have a very different impact on the societies in these two regions. In Sweden as well as in the Netherlands the climate will become moister and preparations for these consequences are taken care of. The situation in the Sahel is totally different since the climate will become drier and will result in drought. These countries are poor and both knowledge and resources are scarce, so there are small possibilities to adapt to the new conditions. It is also of interest to study national as well as international agreements to reduce the use of fossil fuel. Interviews were performed to get information about the knowledge of climate change and its consequences for Sweden as well as well for other parts of the world. As a teacher in Geography, as well as in other subjects, it is of importance to improve the knowledge of problems as well as possibilities regarding climate change and its consequences for the society.

Etableringen av Nya E4:an: En undersökning om hur en kommun påverkas i och med en etablering av en förbifart2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Back to the USSR: En studie av Rysslands demokratiska urholkning2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to examine what actually makes Russia an incomplete democracy, despite of all the formal democratic institutions and legal democratic rights.

The research method used for this essay has been qualitative case study, which strives to answer two research questions: Which democratic principles are not respected in Russia? How does the executive power control the political arena? The theoretical framework used for this study consists of a model based on Dahls Polyarchy theory and the Rule of Law concept. The conclusions points out that very little have formally changed in Russia regarding democratic rights and the constitution. The democratic decline is due to political manoeuvres and undue political influence. There is no proper division of power and the executive powers are not controlled by a system of checks and balances. All democratic principles studied within the analytical framework are manipulated and formal rights are no longer respected by authorities and the executive power.

Erfarna oskulder och arbetande hemmafruar: en studie kring kvinnor i moderniseringsprocesser2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a theoretical study of changing relations between men and women in the context of modernisation. Ideas derived from a general theoretical discussion will be illustrated by examples from countries that are going through societal changes affecting the lives of men and women; Uganda, Morocco and Mexico. Focus will be on connections between changes in the public sphere and interpersonal relations in the private sphere. One part examines certain effects of women’s increased participation in politics and in the workforce, concluding that these changes may cause conflicts with traditional values and consequently tensions in inter-gender relations. The following part examines sexuality and respectability in relation to societal changes where people’s material conditions change and attitudes are affected by information flows from other countries. The examples in this part illustrate how young people, especially women, feel trapped between the demands from their new reality and traditional norms about how to behave. I then go on to discuss power structures that affect women’s possibilities to live the lives they want and also how it may affect their values and interests. The concept of empowerment will be discussed as well as the indicators used to measure women’s empowerment. In this section I will also briefly explain development projects directed towards women and how they sometimes fail to capture all dimensions necessary.

The conclusions are that the definition of modernisation that I had when I started this work is not sufficient to understand the processes that people go through. It is important to understand that changes in people’s material conditions, their economic environment etc. are not always caused by, or even followed by, changes in attitudes, values and interpersonal relations. When societal changes do not come from within the society they will cause conflicts between norms that shape peoples perceptions and the demands from their new material environment. Another conclusion is that in measuring women’s empowerment we need to look at other factors besides economic and political participation, such as women’s status in the family and their control over their own bodies.

Attraction All Inclusive: Towards Poverty Reduction through Tourism in Nampula2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is an analysis of the potential for creating a sustainable value-chain for tourism in the Nampula province in northern Mozambique. Research for this analysis has been conducted both in Mozambique from a supply and community perspective and from the international demand level in Sweden. The study establishes that Nampula has the resources in the form of scenic landscapes, pristine beaches and a rich cultural and historical heritage that give ample potential to build a tourism industry. There are however, several obstacles that have to be overcome if the development of a tourism industry is to become reality. These obstacles include poor infrastructure, problems of marketing, a rather unvaried tourism supply, financial and monetary policy issues, low skills and knowledge, low integration of local production with the tourism sector, intricate bureaucracy, insufficient dialogue and socio- cultural issues.Analyses of international demand show a view of Mozambique as an expensive tourist destination with lower standards than competing destinations with similar price-levels. Marketing of tourism supply in Mozambique, and especially in Nampula, do not reach the international tourism market to any substantial degree and what actually does reach the market caters more for the luxury end.The most important conclusions drawn from this study are that substantial infrastructural development is needed on all levels and that there is a need to incorporate sustainable thinking within all measures and activities regarding tourism development. Furthermore, in order to attract larger volumes and different categories of tourists, diversification of tourist activities is required together with general improvements in standards of facilities and value-for-money. Regional cooperation and a wider focus on Nampula’s tourist-attracting opportunities such as culture-conscious tourism might help to create a local “trademark” and improve marketing options and possibilities. There is also need for increased access to basic education and information to facilitate the integration of local communities with the tourism sector. In addition, increased cross-sector coordination and dialogue are vital to an integrated and sustainable development of the tourism sector. For example, local agricultural development and improved distribution channels should not only be regarded as ends in themselves but also as beneficial towards the tourism industry – and vice versa.

After secularization: Does sacralization changes political opinion?2009In: ECPR Lisbon 2009: 37th Joint Sessions of Workshops: Programme / [ed] Luis de Sousa, Lisbon: ISCTE , 2009, p. 1-24Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Modernization theory assumes, more or less, an ongoing secularization until hardly no religion is left. But what happen after secularization, when the state is secularized and the religious sentiment of the population do not decrease any more? In Sweden – inhabited of one of the most secularized and Post-Materialist population of the world – religious values are perceived as more important among the youngest generations than among the “baby boomers” born in 1940s and 1950s. Does this sacralization affect political opinion? The study uses survey data on the Swedish population 15-85 years of age conducted in 1986-2006. The tentative answer to the question indicates that sacralization is related to some changes in Post-Material opinions, but does not imply major changes in Material opinion.
