Kommunsammanläggningarna 1952-1974: Hur blev de politiskt möjliga?2010In: Offentlig Förvaltning. Scandinavian Journal of Public Administration, ISSN 2000-8058, E-ISSN 2001-3310, Vol. 14, no 3-4, p. 3-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During 1952–1974 the Swedish municipal structure was radically reformed. In 22 years the number of municipalities was reduced from 2 498 to 278. What makes suchlarge-scale reforms possible? We answer this question by analyzing the politicsbehind the amalgamation reforms. We investigate (a) the main arguments for theamalgamations, (b) the degree of consensus behind the decisions, (c) if any alternativeswere presented in the debates leading up to the reforms, and finally (d) how itwas politically possible to push through these reforms. Two different models ofexplanation are put to the test; evolutionary accounts, which see the amalgamationsas rational adaptations to changing social and economic circumstances are contrastedwith a social conflict perspective, which explains the amalgamations in terms of theirdistributional consequences. We argue that an analysis of Sweden's municipal amalgamationreforms supports the social conflict perspective.

Anti-immigrant parties, local presence and electoral success2012In: Local Government Studies, ISSN 0300-3930, E-ISSN 1743-9388, Vol. 38, no 6, p. 817-839Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Does the local organisational presence of anti-immigrant parties affect their chances for electoral success? In order to answer this question, the article explores the potential of a supply-oriented explanation to anti-immigrant party success by examining the electoral advancements the Sweden Democrats (SD) made in the 2006 and 2010 elections. Our results indicate that traditional demand side-explanations to anti-immigrant party success can be successfully complemented by a ‘internal supply-side argument’ to make the electoral fates of these parties more intelligible. Whether the SD had a local organisational presence had a substantial effect on its results in the national election and on the probability of gaining representation in local councils. Thus, the party´s fate in the national as well as local elections was largely determined by whether or not it had a local organisational presence in Swedish municipalities.

Intersecting Inequality: An Interpretative Minor Field Study of Inequality in Bolivia2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor thesis is an interpretive study, where the material has mainly been gathered through ethnographic methods, with thematically opened interviews and observations providing the primary data. A field study was conducted in Bolivia during the months of November and December of 2009; in La Paz in the Western highlands, including some interviews in the fast growing suburb El Alto, as well as in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in the Eastern lowlands.

Bolivia is one of the poorest and most unequal countries in Latin America and the world, and the purpose of the study is to re-contextualise and re-interpret how inequality is created and maintained in the Bolivian society by doing a case study on gender inequality. In addition, an intersectional analysis is used that takes into account the diversity of the Bolivian society in terms of ethnicity and class. The study aims at exploring the mechanisms that create and maintain inequality in a Bolivian context as well as looking at the prospects for potential change in the unequal relations between groups of people within the new context of indigenous president Evo Morales and a new inclusive constitution.

Using an abductive method, the empirical material has been re-interpreted with the help of American sociologist Charles Tilly’s framework of durable inequality. He identifies two mechanisms that create inequality, exploitation and opportunity hoarding, and two mechanisms that reinforce inequality; emulation and adaptation. Together with the concept of intersectionality, recognising women’s different experiences depending on, for instance, ethnic background or social class, these two frameworks are framing the study. Jointly they generate a new analytical tool that can deepen the understanding inequality mechanisms: the Intersecting Inequality Framework.

The content of the interviews when analysed show that inequalities in Bolivia have long historical roots, and that the processes of exploitation, opportunity hoarding, emulation and adaptation that Tilly describes all take place in creating and maintaining an unequal position for Bolivian women. The Intersecting Inequality Framework reveals that the inequality mechanisms in the three dimensions of gender, ethnicity and class sometimes work autonomously and other times intersectionally.

Changing durable inequality is a slow process; nevertheless there are signs of changed relations between categorical bounded groups in the Bolivian society. Although, in the context of Morales the main political focus at the time lays not on attaining gender equality, but rather to continue the empowerment of the indigenous populations.

Challenges for the Opposition and Democratisation in Tanzania: A View from the Opposition2012In: Africa Development, ISSN 0850-3907, Vol. 37, no 2, p. 63-95Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the period after 1990, a massive return to liberalised forms of politics has taken place and has been largely centred around the dismantling of one party- regimes, the termination of a large number of military-led or dominated governments, the embrace of a multiparty political framework, the introduction of an independent media, the restoration of some basic freedoms to the people of the countries concerned and the convening of multi-party elections. This development was so widespread and overwhelming that it was seen by many observers as the beginning of Africa’s second liberation (Olukoshi 1998; Gyimah-Boadi 2004; Mkandawire 2006). Potential gains to the peoples from the liberalisation of their national political spaces were undermined since the 1980s by the conditions set by outside suppliers of necessary resources, combined with internal challenges in terms of weak institutions, civil society and media as well as lack of a tradition of multi- party democracy and general poverty. Matters appear to have been worsened by the fact that in many African countries the promise which the opposition once represented as the bearer of the hopes and aspirations of the people has substantially faded away. Several factors have contributed to weaken and, in some cases, discredit the opposition in much of Africa’s ongoing experience with multiparty politics. This is a serious development that begs for further investigation; as the development of a healthy and vigorous opposition is a major part of a democratic framework. In this study, we will see how the situation in Tanzania has evolved over the past 17 years of multi-party development; based on rather unique interviews with Professor Ibrahim Lipumba, leader of one of Tanzania’s major opposition parties.

Är ny eller gammal regionalism vägen framåt?: -En kvalitativ undersökning om Ansvarskommitténs balansgång mellan demokrati- och ekonomivärden2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In May 2007 a committee called ‘’Ansvarskommittén’’, assembled by the Swedish government, came with a proposal of changing the Swedish regional structure. The committee which consisted of representatives from all the sitting parties in the parliament proposed that the present regional structure consisting of 20 county council districts and 21 counties would be reduced to between 6-9  regions called ‘’regionkommuner’’.

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the committee’s proposal balances democratic and economic values by using a qualitative method. The committee’s proposal is analyzed by a comparison in five political areas with two differentiated regional theories called old and new regionalism. These theories are described and analyzed under the assumption that the old regionalism prioritizes democratic values and the new regionalism prioritizes economic values.

Furthermore, the purpose of this essay can be divided into three parts. The first part is to describe and analyze how the old and new regionalism balances democratic and economic values. The second part consists of analyzing the committees proposal with the same criteria’s as the two regionalism theories and how they balance these two values in each area. The last and most important part is to analyze and describe how the committee balances the values in a bigger picture and if any of the values seems to be prioritized.

The committee’s proposal is analyzed in the same areas as the two regionalism theories and the conclusion is that the committee’s proposal is closely related to the new regionalism in three areas. One area is a combination of the two theories and the last area is not discussed. The result of this essay is that the committee’s proposal is closer related to the new regionalism since the balance between democratic and economic values seems to point towards a prioritization of the economic values.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This essay discusses the negotiation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the process that led up to a signed agreement. The CTBT forbids all nuclear weapon test explosions and all other types of nuclear explosions. The purpose of the study was to distinguish the critical steps of the negotiations that resulted in the success of the CTBT. Based on these insights, my intention was to identify relevant events and actors in the process around the Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT), which has been on the nuclear disarmament agenda for over a decade. Furthermore, my ambition was that the examination of the CTBT negotiation would give me some clarity in what the next step would be to get the FMCT back on track. By using the method of process tracing I intended to achieve the purpose of the essay. I found that the examination of the CTBT process was very helpful in understanding the complexity of multilateral negotiations and that it is not always possible to reach an agreement through completely fair deals. I think that the negotiation of an FMCT will be equally difficult provided the Conference on Disarmament does not decide to transform its structure and procedures.

Tar partierna sitt ansvar?: I vilken utsträckning svenska partier ger väljarna alternativ inför EU-val och i vilken grad de agerar på sina vallöften2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine to what degree three Swedish political parties acted in accordance with two of the requirements of the “Responsible Party Model”, understood through the pledge approach. It is tested to what extent the parties gave voters different alternatives through pledges before the European parliament elections in 2004, and to what extent election pledges were acted upon in plenary. A modified version of the saliency approach is also used to control the results regarding parties fulfilling their promises. The political parties examined were Moderaterna, Vänsterpartiet and Kristdemokraterna.

A quantitative content analysis was used to identify pledges from the election manifestoes. Official documents on activities in plenary were used to measure pursuance of pledges. Evaluation was made by using polar ideal-types and reference points from earlier research.

The empirical analysis shows that the parties did offer voters alternative policy priorities through their election pledges, but not competing alternatives in issues. Moderaterna acted on a responsible 93 % of their election pledges. Vänsterpartiet and Kristdemokraterna acted on 73 % respectively 42 % of their election pledges and did not live up to the expectations.

    Abstract [en]

Twenty five years ago the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company (UR)2 was in the process ofceasing production of radio programmes for children. There were two main reasons expressed;firstly, the broadcasting role model BBC had recently given up their educational radioprogramming for children and secondly, the use of radio programmes (or tapes) in schools inSweden had decreased in favour of television or video use. Surveys of teachers’ attitudes towardsradio usage in education revealed that teachers expected a lack of listening abilities in children, unless audio was accompanied by pictures. As a researcher of UR I made a reception study ofchildren’s listening experiences, which illustrated the abilities among 8-9 year old children tocreate mental images through listening to radio programmes. After their listening, children werepleased about their experiences and advocated an increased usage of radio programmes in school. The benefits of radio or audio and its absence of any pre-produced pictures are rarelyacknowledged. Today, as a university lecturer teaching journalism students in a programme forjournalism and media production (including radio, television and web) I find that radio is oftenneglected among the various media mentioned in media theory literature. When radio is broughtup it is commonly referred to in relation to music. The special affordances of radio/audio narrativesare seldom expressed. In this paper I will elaborate these affordances in relation to children’slistening experiences and to interviews with teachers.

    Abstract [en]

This report is an analysis of the gender representation in Swedish sports media, a comparison between sport in public service television for adults and children. The study explores the differences between the number of male and female sports in the matter of air time and also the number of male and female appearances in the TV shows. The programs studied in this report are the Swedish SVT’s Sportspegeln and Lilla sportspegeln.

When we began this analysis we were under the impression that men would be over-represented, but that representation in sports television for children would be more gender equal than the adult counterpart. The result of the analysis confirmed previous studies stating that men dominate the sports programs in Swedish public service television. However, we found that the differences in gender representation in Sportspegeln and Lilla sportspegeln was smaller than we thought.

    Abstract [en]

The journalistic media landscape has changed and with it the journalistic professional role. This transformation must be reflected in journalism education so that the students are well prepared for the professional life as a journalist. We interviewed journalists in working life on how they see the change and what is now needed to survive in the competitive industry. We also asked about how they see journalism education and what they lack from it.

Subsequently, we interviewed three journalism education programs on how they work with and think about the issues the journalists in our previous interviews raised as important.

Our conclusion is that the industry's requirements and what the education programs offers to its students are consistent in most respects, but there are shortcomings when it comes to general knowledge, motivation, entertainment and diversity.

"With the Strength of a Group": A Minor Field Study of Small-Scale Farmers’ Socio-Economic Situation in Kagera, Tanzania2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on a minor field study conducted in Kagera, Tanzania, during approximately two months in 2009. In the Kagera region, agriculture is seen as the main dependent factor for the small-scale farmers' livelihoods, which is an activity challenged by environmental constraints including soil degradation and deforestation. The non-governmental organisation Vi Agroforestry has been active in Kagera since 2005, focusing on the re-establishment of a healthy and sustainable environment, while simultaneously trying to reduce the levels of poverty and food insecurity through rural-based agroforestry techniques and enterprise development. Its work is implemented with a demand-driven group approach and the small-scale farmers' self-reliance as a key element.

The purpose of the field study was to investigate the socio-economic situation for small-scale farmers in Kagera and how it possibly had changed over time as well as in what ways Vi Agroforestry so far might had affected the farmers' situation. The possible diverse development between farmers that were members in groups collaborating with the organisation and non-members was also investigated. During the field study semi-structured interviews signified the main source of information and the material gathered was analysed according to the capital assets of the pentagon of the sustainable rural livelihood framework.

Overall, even though the small-scale farmers still seemed to face challenges in their daily lives when this study was conducted, the general impression was that their socio-economic situation had improved over time and that Vi Agroforestry had constituted a contributing engine for this development. The main contributions by the organisation in this regard seemed to have been the education and training in agriculture and agroforestry techniques, enterprise development and micro savings and loans. Due to an apparent small-scale development with a diverse focus among the farmers on improving different capitals, as well as insufficient data on how the farmers' situation was before the organisation's arrival, no prominent differences seemed evident between the farmers who were members of groups collaborating with Vi Agroforetry and non-members.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims at studying the development of the party cohesion in the Swedish national parliament, riksdagen, after the introduction of preference voting in the election of 1998. The party cohesion has been measured during parliamentary sessions before and after the reform. The result of the cohesion during each of the sessions has then been compared towards each other. The cohesion was measured between the members of parliament viewed as a whole, and within the party groups during the different sessions. The research method being used has been a quantified statistical voting analysis, making the comparisons of party cohesion during the different parliamentary sessions as easy as possible. The main findings show an increment of the cohesion after 1998, both among the parliamentary members as a whole, and within the political parties. The result rejected the originally stated hypothesis, saying the party cohesion would decrease after the implementation of preference voting to the Swedish parliament.

    Abstract

In the year of 2007, Sweden was the most equal country in the world, and the Philippines was

ranked as number six of 128 countries, by the organization World Economic Forum. This

thesis is a study of female politicians and power in Sweden and in the Philippines. Do the

female politicians perceive that they have just as much power as the males have? I have

interviewed 18 female politicians in a small city in Sweden, and 12 female politicians in the

local and provincial politic in the Philippines. Are there some differences between being a

female politician in these two countries? Yes, there are lots of differences. The men and

women work together in the politic in the Philippines under the same condition. In Sweden

the female work on males rules. This creates problems to get equality, and to share the power

    between men and women. s

    Abstract [en]

In this study we have examined how men and women are heard on Sveriges Televisions program Debatt. Debatt broadcast on Sveriges Televison which is a public service broadcaster. Through the use of a quantitative content analysis and a dialogical approach, we have documented how many men and women who speak, how they speak, how long they have the word and the subjects they will be heard in, in the program Debatt. We have investigated the ten last broadcast programs from the fallseason 2011. Every program is 45 minutes long and contains from two to three discussiontopics each time.

By categorizing our survey and enter the result in four different tables, we found that the majority, 63%, of those that are heard are men. One of our main points in the survey is how men and women get to speak. The men often got the word by interrupting while the women waited for a permission, from the TV host, to speak.

Our results show that men are given more space than women in the program Debatt, which is a public arena for discussion, and we believe that it can contribute to a problem of democracy.

    Abstract [en]

The first ad was published in Sweden 1645. Advertising itself is not a new phenomenon, it's just the conditions that has been changed. Today, advertising is a matter of course in our daily lives, every day we are exposed to thousands of messages that wants to persuade and convince us to consume. In this paper, we have looked into the semiotic and rhetorical tricks that are used for this particular persuasion, and we have investigated whether they have changed in the last 60 years or if the same tricks are still being used today. Our two hypotheses is: A) the rhetorical and semiotic basis of an ad looks the same today as 60 years ago. Despite the obvious difference in layout and graphic design, we believe that persuasion techniques in the form of semiotic and rhetorical character used to sell a product does not differ significantly for the past compared to today. B) Propaganda is used more often in ads from the past then in the ads of today. The purpose of this paper has been to examine whether these hypothesis are correct or not. Our conclusion was based on a qualitative image- and rhetoric analysis applied to six ads from the past (40’s, 50’s and 60’s) and six ads from the present (2010) and the research of how propaganda is used. It was concluded that the hypothesis was not true, instead, we could see during the sixties that led to a different type of ad, a type that is more consistent with today's ads.

Economic bureaucracy and the South Korean developmental state2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

South Korea underwent a period of high economic growth which propelled it from low to high income status in just a few decades. Instrumental in this process of rapid industrial transformation was the economic bureaucracy which formulated and implemented policies. This thesis details the role played by bureaucratic organizations in South Korea’s development and how they were able to formulate successful economic policies. In analyzing the economic bureaucracy in South Korea, a framework is used to determine its level of autonomy from special interests as well as the degree of public-private cooperation. The study finds that the high levels of corporate coherence and autonomy from special interests within the economic bureaucracy can partially be ascribed to the meticulously meritocratic recruitment and promotion process which was established prior to the first years of high economic growth. At a higher level of abstraction, the study concludes that South Korea benefited from having a strong imperative to develop its economy due to numerous external and domestic conditions. Although the level of applicability in other contexts is found to be limited, the emergence of a competent and relatively incorrupt bureaucracy remains one aspect which could possibly be reproduced elsewhere.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at examining the prospects for a policy transfer of a Swedish municipal environmental policy (that of Växjö) to the French urban commune Blois, for which an ambition of becoming a leading eco-city in France, was declared by the mayor in 2008.

In the analysis, emphasis is laid on mechanisms to institutionalize the main environmental policy principles, such as political and institutional structures and processes. Other prospects for an institutionalization of a new environmental policy that are to be investigated are economic structures as well as visions of the different decision-makers concerned. Research methods used in the study are qualitative interviews, document studies and a questionnaire.

The findings of the analysis show that today’s prospects for an environmental policy in Blois close to that of Växjö, are clearly limited. The limitations can partly be found in economic structures but these seem to be rather related to a lack of priority amongst actors. Moreover, problems have been identified arising from administrative complexity with a lack of internal integration. There is a commitment amongst some of the actors working with environmental issues, but the complexity of decision-makers involved together with unclear priorities make a developed strategic approach hard to achieve.

    Abstract [sv]

Following changes in society and other influences, the ideology of political parties can evolveover time. For example, theories exist claiming that all parties in Sweden strive towards the"middle".

A good example of a political party in Sweden which recently has gained entry toparliament is the Swedish Green Party (Miljöpartiet, MP).

MP was initially influenced by a green ideology (ecologism) which started as a globalmovement stating that no other ideologies shared their concerns about the environment. Thegoal of the ideology was to, via an increased influence within the political system and throughsmall-scale production, increases both natural values and people's well being. By becomingelected into parliament it is plausible that the ideology of MP could have changed due to theinfluence of for example, the realities that parliamentary every day represent.

The aim with this essay was to study the changes in MP's party program from the yearof 1994 and the most recent, to see if any changes have occurred related to MP's officialideology. The study was conducted using a comparative text analysis. Moreover, since thetraditional right/left-scale is relatively coarse, four different sets of scales have been used tospecify what "right" and "left" on the traditional scale actually means. By combining the foursets of scales it was concluded that changes have occurred to the ideology of MP.

    Abstract [en]

“Unemployment is a restriction of people’s social

networks and the feeling of participation in the society”

    Abstract

The main aim of this study is to discuss integration in the labour market by analyzing and discussing a governmental Proposition and a Pilot Project as well as the results of the field work herein carried out. In order to understand how integration in the labour market occurs and to provide some suggestions to improve the governmental documents, the concepts of securitization of migration and transnationalization of migration were used as analytical frameworks. The Pilot Project chosen is Pilotverksamhet med etableringssamtal och etableringsplan – Uppdaterad projektplan med mål och riktlinjer för den utvidgade försöksverksamheten based on the Proposition 2009/10:60Nyanlända invandrares arbetsmarknadsetablering – egenansvar med professionellt stöd”. The research questions are 1) which questions are left aside from the Proposition and which are possible suggestions to the questions found? 2) How are the interviewees and the Pilot Project/Proposition affected by securitization of migration and transnationalization of migration? Furthermore, suggestions to improve the proposition were discussed. Interviews with primary and secondary stakeholders were also carried out. This analysis was carried out together with the results of the field work in Kronoberg (focused on residents of Araby, Arbetsförmedlingen and Växjö Kommun) in the view of the concepts of securitization and transnational migration issues. The method of this research is qualitative with an abductive approach. The result of this study indicates a number of issues to be improved in the Proposition document before the law be promulgated by the government, as well as some issues that hinder the integration process of the primary stakeholders. Reflection for future studies concerning the influence of securitization and transnationalization phenomena, as well as suggestions to improve people’s integration processes are presented in the conclusion of this study.

The Terrible Turk: Anti-Ottoman Representations in the 19th Century Swedish Rural Press2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Islamophobia has been pack and parcel in the Western civilisation from the days of Charlemagne via the Crusades and the rise of Orientalism, as opposed to Occidentalism, to the modern day reporting of Islamic terrorist threat. The images have, however, not always been in negative perspective, as one might perceive today. Emperor Napoleon had in fact a great admiration for the Ottoman Empire and founded the study subject of Orientalism. Many were fascinated by the degree of civilisation and the exoticism of the Ottomans, especially the sexual virtues (or lack thereof) were of particular interest of the travellers into the Ottoman Empire and the defamation from the clergy who did not visit the Middle East. This image quickly came to change by the mid 19th century when clashes between the British Empire and the Ottomans were increasingly common, especially in India who were part of the British Empire with a large Muslim population whose loyalties were with the Sultan of Istamboul.

Sweden in the 19th century had no extraordinary dealings with the Ottoman Empire other than normal affairs of state. Instead, the dealing were a hundred years earlier when Charles XII sought refuge in Ottoman city of Bender whilst evading a pursuing Russian army.

We will use a theoretical framework with the foundation in Mary Douglas’ definition of dirt and Edward Saïd’s orientalism as well as modern Islamic frame theory as published by professor Stig-Arne Nohstedt of Örebro University and professor Jesper Strömbäck och University of Mid Sweden.

    Research questions

The broader aim of this cross-disciplinary paper is, through the use of both theories used by media studies scholars as well as traditional historians to explore how the Swedish people represented Muslims through the eyes of the rural press in the 19th century. In particular, which frames were used depicting the Ottomans and did the coverage of the Ottoman Empire change during the 19th century?

    Methodology

Textual analysis on historical material has been the subject of much debate during the latter part of the 19th century and onwards. Classical historicism states that a present day researcher should aim to understand the historical sources in the light of its context. In other words, we can never understand the anti-muslim publications in the 19th century rural Swedish press unless we understand 19th century rural Sweden itself. This, however, is not the within the scope of this paper. Rather, we will aim to interpret the source material cross-disciplinary in the light of the theoretical framework.

For this thesis, we will be using framing theory as a method of categorising the sample of article. The sample will then be subject of a near-reading, interpreting the images used to represent the Ottoman Empire.

Kommunicerad Talang: Kartläggning och utvärdering av Talang 2010´s externa kommunikation2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis will explore how swedish Talang 2010 used their strategic communication in Kalmar and Stockholm and how the effect of this work was shown in the two cities. With a focus on how the sender was working with the external communication in the two cities, the heart of the research was studying Talang 2010’s communication strategy in these two contexts. The research was made with surveys during two audition days in Kalmar and two days in Stockholm. The competitors, the audience and the general public were answering different surveys but with the same base to study the effect. For studying the strategic communication interviews was held with the Marketing Director of Talang 2010, a person in the marketing workgroup in Kalmar and an expert in management and communication strategies. This showed that the Marketing Director of Talang 2010 and the person in the workgroup in Kalmar had another view of the result than the receivers. They felt that they had accomplished their goals by reaching out to more people than before and having more people in the audience than last year, but the survey shows that the public wanted more information about the event. By using contextually different strategies Talang 2010 reached the same result in Kalmar as in Stockholm with a full crowd during all the audition days. With the budget that was available for this year Talang 2010 could have a good use of cheaper options like internet or word of mouth to reach out to even more people.

The Nord Stream Natural Gas Pipeline & the European Union's security situation;: a case study of economic securitization2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis has investigated and analysed whether or not the Nord Stream Natural Gas Pipeline has affected or changed Europe's security situation. By analysing how the Nord Stream Natural Gas Pipeline has been described as a political or economic project by the EU, one can conclude whether the project has been securitized by the EU or not. This is done through the study of official EU documents. The documents have been analysed using framework for sector analysis  and securitization as theorised by the Copenhagen School of international relations. By distinguishing the different conceptions of threat, security and methods discussed in these documents it is possible to analyse whether arguments belong to either the economic or political sector of sector analysis, and how they can be seen as signs of securitization. This has been done by utilizing qualitative text analysis in a case study framework. The thesis concludes that the  Nord Stream Natural Gas Pipeline has not been securitized as a threat by the EU. On the contrary, the project is endorsed as a part of energy proliferation. The EU insist and encourages upon the project and several similar ones in order to ensure energy security for the EU in the future.

More with less: en dystopisk journalistik verklighet i den fiktiva TV-serien The Wire2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our main objective with this thesis was to analyze how journalism is portrayed in popular culture, and to see if there was any difference in the way women and men were being portrayed. We chose to analyze the TV-series The Wire because it is widely considered to be one of the greatest series ever shown on television. Due to its popularity it certainly had made quite an impact on its audience and was therefore important to analyze. The series fifth and last season’s main narrative was about the journalists at The Baltimore Sun and we picked one scene from each episode to see how the journalists were being portrayed and how female and male journalists interacted with and about each other from a gender perspective. Our analysis showed that journalists were portrayed through two types of journalists. One type of journalist that is desperate to keep his/her job and will go as far as making up stories and changing facts to sensationalize journalism in order to please bosses and owners. The other type of journalist is the ambitious type that wants to get under the skin of the obvious story and search for underlying reasons to explain a certain scenario. We also found that it is the first type that gets rewarded and promoted while the honest and ambitious journalist gets stuck where he/she is or gets sent off to another newspaper. Our analysis also showed that there are fewer women than men with important or leading roles in the newspaper. However, the women portrayed in The Wire are treated very similar to men by their bosses.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our study was to examine how homosexual and heterosexual men and women are represented in the Swedish magazine QX, a magazine for gay, bisexual and transgender people. We wanted to find out what kind of roles the persons in QX appears in, and inquire the relationships that exist between them.

We analyzed the texts in twelve magazines, from December 2008 to November 2009, in order to get the most current results as possible. We used a discourse analysis, with focus on identities, relationships and the representation of the world. Representations, gender, hegemonic masculinity and stereotypes have been significant theories to analyze our results.

The results showed that the successful gay man is the most important person in QX. He is the perfect masculine macho fagot, who is highest in rank. Something we found remarkable is that the gay women are subordinate to men, despite that QX is a magazine for both parts. The results also showed that homosexual women are represented more stereotyped than the homosexual men. The heterosexual men are represented as the homosexual men’s supporter, while heterosexual women are represented very queer and argues that a human’s gender, is not primarily in focus when it comes to relations. In our results, we could also see that, generally, there is a more sexistic tone in texts about men than in texts about women.

    Abstract [sv]

School and the Promotion of Generalized Trust: Experiences from Sicily2012In: Journal of Trust Research, ISSN 2151-5581, Vol. 2, no 2, p. 171-201Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores how generalized trust increases or decreases over time as a result of students’ individual experiences of informal school institutions. However, since experiences in local settings are likely to have varying effects on trust in different groups of strangers, we disentangle the concept of generalized trust and separate between different group-trust items. In the article, we show that three of these measure in-group generalized trust while one taps out-group generalized trust. Drawing on original data, collected in seven public schools in Palermo, Italy, between 2002 and 2005, we conclude that experiences of the school climate are transferred to both in-group and out-group generalized trust. However, our second main conclusion is that involvement in associations outside of school tends to generate distrust in people who resemble the respondents’ in-group. By distinguishing between in-group and out-group generalized trust, we thus show that school experiences generate trust in unknown people in general, whereas other localized experiences are exclusively transferred to trust, or distrust, in familiar groups of people. We conclude by arguing these findings are of potentially great importance to trust research since they suggest that generalized trust is less stable and more multi-faceted than previously thought. Moreover, since Palermo is a critical case, we argue that our results are encouraging. If schools can generate trust here, then schools are likely to have a similar effect elsewhere, in more favourable settings.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines if there is any difference how the two biggest tabloids in Sweden, Aftonbladet and Expressen is portraying the Swedish national football team for both woman and men. The purpose is to compare and see if there is any difference regarding what gender you have. We have also examined what gender the authors for the articles have. We have used a quantitative content analysis to get our results. In conclusion, there is a big difference in medial space regarding what gender you have. But there is no significant difference how the reporters are using their language depending what national team they’re writing about. There is also a big majority of male reporters that writes about the national teams.
