    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The more leadership you get, the more power you will receive. Unfortunately, not everyone is given the same opportunities. This can be seen and proved on the basis of studies in media companies. Our purpose concerns attitudes towards female leadership in Moscow, Russia. This thesis was based on two study methods, qualitative interviews and observations. The respondents in our study were divided into three groups, students, media teachers and a media company. The study focused on subject areas suchas female leadership today, the future of female leadership, creative leadership, political

and historical influences, Russian leader style as well as the existence of the glass-ceiling.Our conclusion is that Russia is not ready for a female leadership, mainly because of their historical context.

"It needs to be a happy marriage": En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av hur Dagens Nyheter och The New York Times använder sig av pressbilder i sin dagliga nyhetsförmedling2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The intention of this BA-thesis was to study how two daily newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and The New York Times, use press photos in their news reporting during one week. The purpose was to analyze how similar the newspapers are and how they differ when it comes to the use of press photos. This has been examinee through comparing the press photos in the national, international and local sections of the papers. We chose to focus on how much the papers visualize their news and what kind of pictures the photo editors decide to publish. The method we applied was quantitative content analysis. To get a deeper understanding concerning the use of press photos we also interviewed two photo editors and two photographers.

The study was guided by theories like the media logic, news valuation, tabloidization and semiotics. Our empirical material contains 454 press photos from 14 different editions. Our results indicate that Dagens Nyheter and The New York Times generally publish two press photos per page devoted to editorial text. A big difference between the two newspapers is that Dagens Nyheter uses the biggest and the smallest photos while The New York Times tends to publish photos of a middle size. The newspapers ordinary photographers take the majority of the photos and the most visualized news topic is politics. Politicians and regular people are the most widely represented groups in the press photos. We can also see that The New York Times publish more action pictures than Dagens Nyheter, which in its turn mainly use portraits and landscapes photos. The only action pictures that Dagens Nyheter publishes are placed in the international section. When it comes to the head photos on the newspapers frontages our results show that Dagens Nyheter publish a lot bigger photos than The New York Times, which indicates that the Swedish paper is more affected by tabloidization.

Armaturer för offentliga toaletter2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Fairytale about the Great Land called Creativity: A study about how to improve creativity in the fashion industry2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to study how creativity can be improved within creative organizations, and the study was made both in Great Britain and in Sweden. We wanted to learn if creative employees have the possibility to use their creativity within their organization or if rules within the organization only hamper their creativity. We conducted interviews in both Sweden and in Great Britain and the focus on the study were on designers and product developers within the fashion industry. The research was a qualitative study consisting of a total of 7 semi-structured interviews. Designers and product developers feel that their creative ability sometimes gets hampered by their organization. We came to the conclusion that the manager need to be good at structure, trust, set up clear goals, conflict solving and communication and by that, let the organizations creative employees within it have the freedom to work at other places but at the office in order to get inspired by the environment.

    Abstract [en]

Every spring and fall, the Swedish state announces its budget for the coming months. At

the most recent of these occasions, the presentation caused complete press pandemonium.

The tabloids had a field day, seemingly criticizing the government with unusual ferocity

and precision. From a wide range of issues they selected only a few and analyzed them

through one perspective only – a negative one.

Was this always the case? Or did the papers respond differently than normal to this newly

elected set of politics, due to its conservative character?

We chose eight articles from Aftonbladet and Expressen, half of which written in 2007,

and the remainder from 1995 in order to compare somewhat equal measures made, but by

    ideologically opposed parties.

After thorough examinations our suspicions were proved wrong. As it turned out, opinions

aside, the rulers always find themselves in the media line of fire. There are no hidden

    agendas - or unjust biases.

But we still marvelled at our results. When it comes to this kind of journalism, simplifying

models of explanation are used – deliberately or not – making sure that all acts are

described in the worst conceivable manner. Arguments about far stretching effects are

neglected, making the democratic decisions appear as dramatic and short sighted as

    possible.

The image of reality that reaches the public is unbalanced and severely distorted, and this,

we are sure, will have a serious impact on society in the long run.

Tolkande män och förbipasserande kvinnor: En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av kvinnor och mäns representation i svensk nyhetspress2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the representation of women and men through the quantitative analysisof quotations in three Swedish newspapers - Dagens nyheter, Aftonbladet and Barometern. The roles in which they appear have also been recorded, for example; managerial, political orparental. In addition to the main study, this report analyzes how often women and men appearin the respective photos of the articles examined. In total, 36 newspapers were included in thisstudy (12 of each paper) which resulted in a data set of 1453 articles and 1296 photos. The main aim of this study was to measure the degree of equality and in what differing roleswomen and men appear when being interviewed. Secondly, this study aims to highlight anydifference between women and men appearing in text and photo. The results were comparedacross the three newspapers examined with established theories on gender and feminism, equality, social construction, representation and media power being applied to understand andanalyse these results. The study shows patterns of an unequal distribution between the representation of women andmen in the three Swedish newspapers examined. In the articles where the individuals could beidentified by gender, approximately 65 percent of the persons interviewed were male and 32percent female (the remainder were not identified). Men were more likely to be quoted inexpert or managerial roles where as it was more common for woman to appear under thefamily and consumer headings. However, it was more common for women to appear in photothan in text, with 60 percent of the photos examined containing men and 40 percent women.

Kommunikation i sociala medier: Nya utmaningar för organisationer2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

AbstractTitle: Communications through Social media – new challenges for organizations Kommunikation i sociala medier – nya utmaningar för organisationerAuthor: Jenny Lilius Location: University of Kalmar Language: Swedish Number of pages: 46 (62 including appendix) Level: BA Thesis in media and Communications StudiesAim: The main purpose of this thesis was to explore what kind of challenges organizations face when communicating through social media. Because social media is a new phenomenon the thesis also examined how organizations active in Sweden today looks upon, defines, monitoring what is said about them and uses social media today.Method: The thesis was based upon the qualitative gathering of empirical facts. Through deep interviews with five organizations and literature studies the author was able to gather the results.Theories The analysis is primarily based upon theories about organizational communications such as PR, Rogers’s diffusions of innovations and the marketing mix. But the study also includes theories digital communication and the different views upon communications.Main results: Through my thesis I was able to find out that the organizations look upon social media the same way as many PR consultants and practitioners do. Their mutual viewpoint is that social media is a consumer generated media and a platform for dialogue. This led me to the conclusion that an academic definition should be able to be drawn as well. The way the organizations defines social media differs from how they use it in their communication. All the contributory organizations use social media mainly for PR and marketing purposes and not for conversations with their surroundings. All but one organization have some kind of contemporary social and environmental analysis that includes social media. The thesis shows that there are many challenges that organizations have to face when deciding to start communicating through social media. The biggest challenge is to decide to what degree the organization is willing to have a rewarding and mutual dialogue or just want to use the media to reach new target audience. Keywords: Social media, sociala medier, web 2.0, Organisationskommunikation,Organizational Communications, omvärldsbevakning,

De fyra små dvärgarna: om stereotypisering av amerikanska presidentkandidater2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study examined the portryal of the four American Presidential candidates Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney and John McCain, in three major New York City newspapers, during a period of two weeks in February – March, 2008.In order to examine what kind of individual characteristics were attributed to the fourcandidates, I used semiotic analysis for a closer examination of the pictures published in thethree different newspapers, and discursive analysis to closer examine the texts written aboutthe four different candidates. I compiled my data and summarized the results, regardless of which newspaper the text or picture analyzed was published in. The results of my study showed that Barack Obama, as the only black candidate, was portrayed as a immature person incapable of controlling his emotions, Hillary Clinton, as the only female candidate, was portrayed as a weaker individual, unable to handle the situation exposed to her as a presidential candidate, cracking under pressure. McCain was the only candidate attributed with positive qualities, as strength, whilst Mitt Romney was portrayed as a rich playboy.

Digital presentation av Sunnerbogymnasiet: -      En studie över hur VR kan användas för att locka nya elever2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis has been to examine how the risk for the swine flu was represented in the Swedish Radio news broadcast Ekot 16.45 during different phases of the pandemic in 2009. We wanted to study how the risk was described in different discourses and periods? Were the participants in the reporting calming or warning the listeners in relations to different aspects of the swine flu? What consequences for the community were reported in the broadcasting?

To find the answers to our questions, we analysed 13 features about the swine flu broadcasted in Ekot’s main news broadcast Ekot 16.45. We used critical discourse analysis inspired by Norman Fairclough.

We identified four types of discourses in our text, a journalistic discourse, a medical discourse, a nationalistic discourse and an authority discourse. The main discourse was the medical one. We also discovered power relations in each discourse but also between them.

We noticed that the media transmitted the information from the authorities like a megaphone, rather than handling it in their traditionally critical way. In addition most people interviewed were representatives from the authorities and not ordinary people, manifesting the above mentioned authoritative perspective/discourse and leading to an absence of descriptions on effects at an everyday level. We also observed that the risk was talked about in various ways depending on if the feature belonged to the warning or acute phase of the pandemic. In the way the features were presented, it was clear that the presentations of the swine flu also had effects on the community, the healthcare and the whole nation as if preparing for an outbreak.

Den personfixerade politiken: En innehållsanalys av Nagens Nyheters rapportering från det amerikanska presidentvalrörelsen 20082009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay has been to describe and compare the personal qualities that the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter (DN) tried to associate Barack Obama and John McCain with during the American presidential election campaign 2008. The main question to be answered is: What social and physical characters as well as what personal experiences, interest and resources did DN tried to emphasize regarding John McCain and Barack Obama during the American presidential election campaign 2008. The theoretical starting-point has been John B Thompson’s theory of the mediated publicity and John Corner´s theory of political persona and spheres of action. Various DN news texts, in all 38 articles, have been examined by content analysis from 25th of august to the 4th of November. The main results show that the most frequent mentioned qualities about Barack Obamas was his skin colour, ethnicity and speech talents. The most frequent mentioned qualities about John McCain was his age and his military experiences from the Vietnam War. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that the qualities described in DN created a picture of two different politicians. Many of the qualities that was mentioned have no connection to politics and even if they was just mentioned one time can they play a significant role in trying to build confidence. Many of the qualities that was mentioned are qualities that necessary not have to be seen as positive.

    Abstract [en]

Credibility is not a given thing in society. It requires a mutual relationship between the parties. The purpose of this study was to illuminate newspaper legitimacy in relation to media content. The study used a qualitative approach and comprised two case studies, one morning- newspaper and one evening paper, which were the Göteborgs-Posten and the Göteborgs-Tidningen. The main theoretical issues concerning legitimacy were the definitions of legitimacy, impacts, factors of high and low credibility, news components and agenda setting. The conclusion was that both newspapers shared a degree of legitimacy, but with different implications. Neither the morning nor the evening paper seemed to believe whole-heartedly in objective information.

As a case study was used an assignment to make an operator’s manual and an instruction manual as well as a manual for spare parts concerning the filler NM-602 for Norden Machinery AB. Norden Machinery AB is world leading within tube handling and produces about 150 tube filling systems a year. The manuals belongs to a middle size machine that fills 60 tubes per minute, the buyer is Sirius Machinery Inc. in the USA, which is a company in the same concern as Norden Machinery. To the machine belongs an operator manual which is the document that is always supposed to be beside the machine and provides information about the daily routine. The machined also has an instruction manual and spare part manual, these are more detailed and they describe how the machine is built. In order to produce these manuals I used different computer programs. The one that is more special is Zert Infologic, because Norden Machinery is one of the first companies to use this program. Zert Infologic is specially designed to manage large amounts of technical information. Shannon and Weavers communication model was used to analyse the information in the manuals.. An important aspect were how does the information get transmitted to the customer and if there is noise that disturbes or complicates the process. With a special focus on noise, the results indicate that the main obstacles to the successful information transmission are the language in the manual, the technical level of the manual and the knowledge of the writer.

Sustainable Lighting - Designed Considering Emotional Aspects2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Global warming challenges designers to pay attention to environmental effects of manufacturing when designing new products. This examination project was a personal challenge to uphold ethical responsibility as a designer and consider emotional aspects of design while aiming to create a pleasurable lighting for the home environment.

The underpinning idea for the project was to promote the use of recycled materials and an environmentally friendly light source aiming to create a sustainable everyday commonplace product that it is possible to manufacture. High power LED-technology was chosen because of its energy efficiency, flexibility and a particularly long life-cycle. Recycled plastic and fibre cardboard were chosen to be applied as the shades of the lamps. Both these recycled materials can be broken down and recycled again after use.

Emotional design aspect was the leading theory in the design process. The intention was to consider different levels of emotional aspects when defining the main characteristics of the lamp to create pleasurable lighting: Among usability and aesthetics the concentration was on the semiotics of the product and its usage context. It was designed with the aim of evoking pleasurable feelings in users who desire to lead an active and urban life-style but who are simultaneously worried about global warming.

Both of the lighting designs are for a dining context. They are supposed to create a pleasurable atmosphere around a dining table while separating the party around the table from the rest of the space. Other lights can be dimmed or switched off when it is time to gather around the table to accentuate the illumination and feeling of togetherness.

Inspiration for the project came from sustainability, contemporary thoughts and trends embodied into maps. The products turned out to be silent statements of today’s global world; Antarctica refers to glacial retreat while Town symbolises the importance of people’s own origin in this globalised world.

TV-profiler på TV4: En studie om hur TV4 arbetar med personliga profiler2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the media world today it is important for TV-companies to differentiate since the number  of competitors has increased. The competition is more complex today because of the  possibility to broadcast throughout satellite and cable. As a company you need a strong brand  in order to differentiate the company from the competitors. The brand of media companies are  set by the content of the offer, which means that the program and the people connected to the  television program has an importance for the sake of how people experience the company. For  a commercial TV channel the content is also important because it attracts the viewers and as a  consequence, also attracts the advertisers. In this thesis, we have studied how a Swedish TV  company works with people in order to strengthen its identity and brand and the reason for  this. We have examined a commercial TV company, TV4. The company consists of one big  mainstream channel and several smaller niche channels. To study how they work, we  interviewed five managers from different departments in the organisation. People as brand  identity and the uses and gratification theory gave us a wider understanding of why the  company work with profiles. The results of our study showed that TV4 works with a number  of TV hosts and celebrities in different ways to createa stronger brand. Theseprofiles have  several extensive functionswithin the company. They are the messengers of the identity and  the brand that the company tries to communicate. They symbolise the brand of TV4 for the  viewers and assist in creating an identity for the smaller channels or to attract the viewers. The  results also indicate that the company is aware of various needs the viewers requireand that  the profiles operate to fulfil those needs.Well known profiles create a personal relationship to  the viewers which is one of the reasons why they use profileswithin the establishment. Another reason is that the company believe thatprofiles are important to attract viewers and  be competitive.

    Abstract [en]

In our study we examined recurrent patterns and changes in the representation of

homosexual persons in Swedish daily newspapers 1987, 1997 and 2007.

We analysed articles about HIV-infected persons and articles with a view to portray the

life conditions of gay and lesbian persons from the three different years. We chose to

only analyze news articles that intend to represent real human beings, which mean that

we did not analyze reports that only reproduce abstract knowledge from authorities.

With analytical tools from semiotics and discourse analysis we identified some recurrent

patterns in the representation of homosexual people. We found that a recurrent pattern in

that when homosexual people are seen as groups, they are described as deviant,

discriminated and some times as a threat. When portrayed as individuals the nonanonymous

persons appear in articles and pictures as normal, strong and healthy. Lesbian

women are not represented in the articles from 1987, but in articles from 1997 and 2007

they appear as unhappy when single and happy in a relationship.

The results also showed some interesting differences in news representation of

homosexual persons between the three investigated years. One example of this is that the

media stopped referring to homosexual men as a ‘hazard group’ in terms of HIV at some

point after the year 1987. We recognize this as an important change in the news medias

perspective on both HIV and love between men.

There is an ongoing change of the media industry where new types of media emerge as a result of technological advancements. The audience and their use of the media have changed where available range has expanded while the size of the audience has remained the same. For media companies this implies a fight for the audience, where the right approach is vital for keeping as well as attracting new customers. Public service is an issue under current debate and its future role in the media industry has been brought into question. This survey investigates the roll of public service in Scandinavia in a new and changing media industry and how they should act to be important for their audience. The thesis targets how the public service phenomena works with new media channel, how they approach the change in how the audience consume media. The probable scenarios is based on the change between the current public service situation in the Nordic region and the future, where we put the future role of public service in a changing market into question. The study focuses on public service and is based on relevant theoretic frameworks and in-depth interviews. The theoretic-oriented framework is based on the phenomena from a change in media supply, a change in media consumption as well as how public service ought adjust to be in order for its survival. The interviews make out the core of the study, where key individuals from the industry have been interviewed. The direction of the interviews has been towards public service, emerging media, change in the audience, public service’s approach to their surroundings and how it can develop and become an organization adapted to today’s development. The conclusion of the study is that in order for public service to retain a function in the changing media environment have to maintain a high grade of audience utility. In order to do so, public service has to revaluate and change their strategy as the audience and their relation to and consumption of media services and products has changed.

Musikmarknadskommunikation 2.0: En studie av hur svenska independentbolag i musikbranschen kommunicerar med sinmarknad via sociala nätverk på internet.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay has a purpose of looking at Swedish independent labels in the music industry and how they communicate with their market through social networks on the internet. There have not been much research about this in the past and we hope to contribute with knowledge to the area. In mind we had the changing music industry, an evolution of the internet and viral marketing communication.

To answer our research question we decided to conduct three interviews with people who worked at independent labels and had market communication as their area ofresponsibility. The three independent labels in our study were based in Sweden, except for one that is based in London, England as well as Stockholm, Sweden. We selected the independent labels based on their tendency to work with marketing communication in the social networks on the internet. The interviews were very open in their structure to encourage dialog, but still had a focus on how they communicate through social networks on the internet. We applied theories about web 2.0, viral marketing communication and marketing communication in the music industry on the answers we got from the interviews.

The result we got showed that the independent labels were willing to work with marketing communication through social networks on the internet. It showed that they used four major social networks to communicate, and it also showed that they tend to integrate these features with their artists to communicate with their fans. We discovered that not all independent labels are using this new form of communication to the fullest, and there are many things they can improve. The main reason for this type of marketing communication was that the independent labels don't have economic resources for traditional marketing communication.

Based on this we came to a conclusion regarding that independent labels should focus almost all their market communication through social networks on the internet. We found that you do this by building networks with loyal recipients within the existing social networks to be able to communicate and be fully able to exploit the viral communication effect.

Ett flytande paradis?: En studie om hur tropiska öar framställs i svenska resemagasin2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a study about how Swedish travel magazines write about tropical islands with a history of colonization. The study investigates how the islands of Mauritius, the Seychelles, Haiti, the Maldives, the Dominican Republic, Aruba, Zanzibar and Guadeloupe are being portrayed in four Swedish travel magazines.

Travel articles published in the travel magazines Vagabond, Allt om Resor, Res and Escape 360° during the period January 2004 to December 2009 have been analyzed through critical discourse analysis.

The study concludes that the travel magazines tend to idealize and aestheticize the tropical islands. The islands are being presented as paradises on earth. They are described as fairy tales, magical, dreams and as playgrounds for Westerners. The inhabitants of the tropical islands are being judged by how well they attend to the tourists’ needs and wishes. The inhabitants are presented as unreliable, while the tourists are presented as reliable. The inhabitants are also being portrayed as childish, exotic and primitive.

Theories about how old colonial ways of thinking continue to flourish in travel journalism are being used to give depth to the findings of the study.

Design åt en ny kamin2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Introduction and research question: In the global media field, global expansion has become more common and is a way for media companies to reach out to a broader audience. Both advantages and disadvantages come with a global expansion and there are several cultural differences that have to be considered. This thesis will deal with the cultural differences and discuss how a Swedish media company efficiently goes about establishing in Vietnam. This leads us to this thesis' research question: How does a Swedish media company succeed in Vietnam?

Purpose: This thesis' purpose is to find out what media companies do to successfully acclimate to the Vietnamese culture and the important aspects of the cultural differences to consider.

Delimitation: In order to present a thesis with greater depth and acquire a deeper understanding, the study is limited to examine Swedish media companies and what intercultural aspects are important to consider when establishing in Vietnam.

Method: The research we have done is based on interviews, which we thought could give us the accurate information and a good base to stand on. We have interviewed five people who, in different ways, have something to do with Vietnam's media or intercultural communication. The interview question is based on the information we have found in the theory chapter. The interviews gave us a deeper understanding about the subject and lead to interesting answers that could help us answer our research question.

Conclusion: There are many things a company needs to think about when setting up an establishment in a new county. In our study we have found out the differences between Vietnam and Sweden and we have examined the most suitable way for a company to communicate with the market in Vietnam. This thesis can be seen as a guideline for media companies in Sweden that are going to expand their organization to the Vietnamese market.

Keywords: intercultural communication, Vietnam, global expansion, media companies, foreign establishment

    Abstract [en]

This BA thesis examines how the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet writes about celebrities. Our questions were: How much does Aftonbladet write about celebrities? What kind ofcelebrities does Aftonbladet write about? In which context do celebrities appear inAftonbladet? We have also studied how these matters have changed since 1978.In our research we have used quantitative content analysis. We have analyzed a total of 956articles about celebrities from 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008. We chose to analyze articles fromtwo synthetic weeks each year.We have used theories about celebrity culture, popularization and personalization and alsoabout public and private in our analyze. Our conclusions were that Aftonbladet has written a lot of articles about celebrities for a longtime, but the articles about celebrities in Aftonbladet have increased by 170 percent since1978.The number of articles that Aftonbladet has written dealing with the private life of celebritieshas not changed much at all since 1978. This was something that surprised us because weexpected that Aftonbladet would write more about the private life of celebrities in 2008 thanin 1978.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to explore and analyze the sponsored debates on Newsmill, so called seminars. How does the sponsor use Newsmills seminars for marketing purposes? Who is allowed to write in Newsmills seminars?

To answer these questions we used both a quantitative survey and a qualitative survey.

To examine how the sponsors use Newsmills seminars for marketing purposes we conducted a qualitative analysis which included three of the eleven seminars - a total of 26 articles. We examined how the sponsors conveyed the picture of themselves and if the written content in Newsmills seminars contained any hidden marketing. We could see that the sponsor has a great deal of influence on the seminars and also used them to market their brand with hybrid messages. Sponsors often tried to relate their brand to a public issue in order to camouflage their commercial purposes.

The quantitative survey aimed to map the seminars and answer the question “Who is allowed to write in Newsmills seminars?”. We observed how many of the writers were male/female, had a Swedish/foreign name, had a certain position in society and if the writer had any connection to, or wrote about, the sponsor. We examined all articles ever published in Newsmills seminars, up to the day of the survey. A total of 164 articles in 11 different seminars.

Our result showed that female writers are a minority group in Newsmills seminars. So are people with foreign names and people who lack a position which grants them authority.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to seek knowledge about how the media audience interprets media representations of immigrants as well as the construction of ”us” and ”them” that is created from the media report.

We implemented two focus group interviews, one containing only ethnical Swedes and one holding a variety of people with different ethnical backgrounds. The focus groups got to read nine news articles from different Swedish news papers selected by us, based upon previous research. These articles got to serve as the basis of the discussion. To supplement the focus groups, which got to represent the media audience, we also interviewed two different persons we choose to call informants, whom are both immigrants and are or have been politically active and often appear in local media. The interviews were our empirical material which was used for analysis. The method we used was qualitative analysis of meaning and was based upon a hermeneutic starting point, meaning that all humans are interpreting beings. As a theoretical base we used a social constructivistic perspective, with central theories such as stereotyping and representations.

The result showed that the media audience sees through the distorted media representations of immigrants. There was an obvious awareness among the participants but at the same time they admitted being affected by the stereotypes and incorrect representations of immigrants. Reluctant racial prejudice could be discerned in the shape of implicit racism in spite of the awareness that was proved. All the participants agreed on the fact that Muslims are the people who are seen as collective representatives of all immigrants. The reason for this bias they all thought originated from the extreme representation of Muslims in the media, that is, there are more often fundamentalists who are allowed to be seen and to make statements in the media than ordinary people. There were also dissimilarities in the interpretation of the media representations between the Swedish group and the group from mixed ethnic backgrounds.

    Abstract [en]

This study intends to examine the impact of a well known debate page in one of Sweden’s biggest newspapers, Dagens Nyheter. We have done this by analysing Ekot, Aktuellt, Göteborgs Posten and Västerbottens-Kuriren to see to what extent they “take” news from the debate page.

The method used was content analysis and to describe some of our thoughts about how we placed the hits in different categories we chose eight of our hits to exemplify.

The material from the newspapers, radio and television was examined to discover the potential impact from the debate page.

To carry out this study we have mainly used theories about how media get influenced by each other’s news and how they do follow-ups and refer to the original media. Other theories of importance for our study are for example those about what kinds of events that become news and how media influences people’s thoughts about what’s important.

One of the most important conclusions we were able to draw after carrying out our study was that the debate page in Dagens Nyheter has quite a small impact on what our chosen media reported on. The biggest impact was found in the newspapers, whereas radio and television very seldom referred to the debate page.

To sum up, one can absolutely say that the debate page in Dagens Nyheter is powerful and do have impact on other media, but an article published on the page is not automatically discussed and debated in other media during the day.

    Abstract [sv]

”A man could shut you down, a female wouldn’t do that”: - A comparison between two Chinese English language newspapers in the matter of female representation2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study concerned two English language newspapers published in China. We chose to

focus on gender and female representation by comparing the amount of quotes that women

and men get. Our study also contained a picture analysis and interviews with Chinese

journalists. Our study was based on a social constructivist frame of reference. We used gender

    theories and media theories.

Women compared to men were under-represented in the two newspapers South China

Morning Post and China Daily. Women mostly get to express themselves as mothers, and

students while men get to express themselves as business and political leaders, sports

celebrities and criminals. Our result shows that male reporters in South China Morning Post to

a larger amount then their female colleagues quote women. In China Daily the gender of the

journalist who has quoted female sources are quite equal.

The Chinese journalists that we interviewed preferred to interview women instead of men if

they was given the opportunity. But they do not consider gender to be the most important

issue when they choose their sources. Professionalism and relevance are the most important

reasons when they decide whom to interview. The low female representation in South China

Morning Post, according to Jasmine Wang, news reporter at the newspaper South China

Morning Post is an affect of the nature of the industry.

Syns man så finns man: En utvärdering av ett analysverktyg som mäter funktionshindrades synlighet i TV-mediet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our aim was to examine how a new instrument (code book) measuring the representation of disabled persons in TV, worked during a pilot project that was implemented in the autumn of 2007 at Sveriges Television, SVT (non commercial television). The following questions were asked:

    • How did the instrument (the code book) work within SVT Syd during a pilot project?

    • What is required for the new tool to function in editorial work?

This was examined by interviewing three journalists at SVT Syd in Malmö who tested the instrument in order to get their impressions and opinions of the pilot project. We also interviewed four other persons that were involved in the planning of the project. The study was guided by the social responsibility theory that defines media´s obligations to society. SVT as a public service company is morally bound to follow this theory, even though the media logic decides what is produced.

The results indicated that the awareness of how disabled persons are portrayed in TV enhanced a bit among the three journalists that tested the code book. According to the journalists, they do not consciously exclude any specific group in their daily work.

Previous research, however, indicates that the representation of disabled persons in the television is limited. The instrument also needs to be simplified in order to work for future use. Our study showed that the instrument is needed within SVT so that the idea of the social responsibility theory is fulfilled.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this BA-thesis is to examine how many girls, boys, women and men who appear in children’s programmes in the years 1978, 1992 and 2007. We have also studied if they are described as typical gender role stereotypes and we have looked at the power conditions between girls and boys, women and men and children and adults. From the results we then examined the changes through out the years. We have made this possible by choosing two days each year when most children were watching the programmes.

With the gender role theory we have brought up the important issue of the fact that men appear more frequently in media then women and by doing so the media preserve men as the standard gender. You can also apply this theory on the condition of children and adults, where the adults are the norm in the generation system.

We have analysed the contents of the programmes by using a quantitative method and our results showed us that the equality between the sexes hasn’t improved as much as we had hoped for. The year 1978 sometimes had the same results as 2007 and at some parts the year 1978 was better than 2007. The year 1992 was not equal in any part except in the equality between the sexes in the starring role.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

    Author: Kristin Näs

Title: The technology society’s love letters – a qualitative analysis of communication through internet dating.

    Level: BA Thesis in Communication

    Location: University of Kalmar

    Language: Swedish

    Number of pages: 53

Keywords: communication, dating, web dating, gendering talk, interaction, flirting, the internet, contact, communities.

Summary: A qualitative study on the subject of internet dating and how people using internet dating chooses to present them self and how they choose to communicate with others to create contact. Internet dating is a phenomenon that is continually growing. 2 million people in Sweden are singles today and more than half of them have tried internet dating at least once. The purpose of this study was to research the way people choose to present them self and how the communication on an internet dating site is used. My question I wanted to answer with this study was – How do people present themselves best on a virtual meeting place for singles?

I choose methods hermeneutic and a qualitative analysis because I wanted to study the members of an internet dating site and how they communicated and presented themselves by profiles and mail. I also choose to do four interviews to get a deeper insight in the subject of internet dating.

I choose theories like Thompson’s three interactions perspectives and Robert Hoppers differences between women and men speech and use of language. These theories would show me how people interact on the internet in a situation where they are looking for a love partner and it will also show me how gender takes part in that type of world.

I was able to get lot of text materials and with my interview my analysis showed me that people turn to internet dating because it seems to be harder to get a real contact in real life. People appreciate the easy access of the dating sites and the possibility to put themself out there for others to contact. What communication that is the best to establish a contact is talking about common interests or something from the other person’s profile. Also topics like occupation and event coming up is successful. When it comes to gender and differences between them or how power takes place it doesn’t show. It seems very equal and no one has the upper hand. The men however seems to be fighting for the women’s attention but the statistics say that the members on a dating site are equal between the sexes. The way preferred to present themselves seems to be by presenting occupation and interests. Some even present what qualities they are looking for in a partner and this also says something about the person.

At the end of the study the analysis is presented and the answer to my question. There are also suggestions to future studies presented and with a subject like internet dating there are no limits, only your imagination can stop you!
