The AMANDA neutrino telescope and the indirect search for dark matter: AMANDA Colaboration1998In: Physics reports, ISSN 0370-1573, E-ISSN 1873-6270, Vol. 307, no 1-4, p. 243-252Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With an effective telescope area of order 104m2, a threshold of ~50GeV and a pointing accuracy of 2.5°, the AMANDA detector represents the first of a new generation of high energy neutrino telescopes, reaching a scale envisaged over 25 years ago. We describe its performance, focussing on the capability to detect halo dark matter particles via their annihilation into neutrinos.

Miljöeffekter vid ändrad ytbehandling på ITT Water & Wastewater2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

ITT Water & Wastewater will perhaps change the surface treatment method of the pumps to improve the elimination of the rust attacks the pumps get affected by today. The task for this degree project is to analyze and describe the effects of the environment caused by the new surface treatment methods the company investigates. The aim with the project is to develop groundwork and a recommendation on which of the surface treatment ITT Water & Wastewater should choose from an environmental point of view. The methods that have been studied are:

    • Iron phosphatising + electro coating

    • Zinc manganese phosphatising + electro coating

    • Oxsilan + electro coating

These methods have been compared to the no-action alternative, which means today’s process continuing unchanged. The studied effects on the environment of the different methods are:

    • Emission to air and water

    • Waste

    • Energy

From the three new methods and the no-action alternative, Oxsilan followed by electro coating is the alternative that causes least effects of the environment. The method has no emissions of VOC to air, it doesn´t cause any hazardous waste and the waste created is a small amount. The energy consumption is also less than for the other studied methods.

    Abstract [en]

Water-related processes in landfills are discussed with emphasis on internal processes such as field capacity, moisture variation in time and space, and macropore flow. Runoff production and evaporation from landfills in Sweden of different age are investigated. It is clarified in what ways and for how long a closed municipal landfill differs from an ordinary land area from a hydrological point of view.

Refraktionsförändringar under läkningsprocessen efter kataraktoperation2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I studien ingick 82 kataraktopererade ögon.

    Abstract [en]

A reconstruction of Cr emissions in Sweden is presented. Estimations of total flows for 1920in 1980 were based on trade statistics, production of goods and life-length of products in society. Asimple model was used to calculate amounts of Cr accumulated in soil and sediment at different times. The importance of production emissions from tanneries and ferrochrome and steel plants is obvious, but, in the future, diffuse emissions of the same magnitude may occur from Cr products within urbanareas.

Optimering och validering av PCR-metod för diagnostik av svampinfektioner i nagel2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Using the counterselectable marker pheS* to study the excision rate and excision patterns of the pathogenicity island of Enterococcus faecalis V583 2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Enterococcus genus consists of natural members of the gastrointestinal tract but they are also opportunistic pathogens. They are a common cause of urinary tract infections but can also cause sepsis and other infections. Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are the most abundant in clinical specimens. Enterococci are a leading cause of nosocomial infections and they have developed resistance against a number of antibiotics e.g. vancomycin. E. faecalis V583 was the first vancomycin resistant isolate reported in the U.S. Movable genetic elements such as pathogenicity islands, PAI, are important for bacterial evolution. PAI:s are large chromosomal fragments mostly seen in pathogenic strains and carry regions such as transposons and insertion elements along with virulence factors and transfer genes. A PAI has been detected in the chromosome of E. faecalis. Excision of PAI:s has been studied for uropathogenic E. coli and frequencies of 10-5 and 10-6 have been reported. In this study the excision rate and excision patterns of E. faecalis V583 was studied using the counterselectable marker pheS*, causing p-Cl-phe sensitivity, and a chloramphenicol resistance gene, cat, inserted at two different positions of the PAI and selecting for excisions by growth on p-Cl-phe. Excision rates of 10-6 and 10-8 were seen based on the p-Cl-phe resistance and chloramphenicol sensitivity. Mutation rate in the pheS* gene was high compared to excision rate which made the method difficult to work with. No obvious excision patterns were detected but the excisions seemed to be limited to the close surroundings of the pheS*/cat insertion.
