The Evolving Role of the CFO: An institutional conception of professional roles and identities2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

An extensive discussion can be observed that addresses the role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) as an essential part of a company’s strategic function, whilst the professional origin lies in the technical area of accounting. In relation to the discussion, little academic research has been conducted on the CFO. The few that exist support the strategic orientation of contemporary CFOs but do not address the gap that is the evolvement from being an accountant to a strategic contributor. Specifically, no work has been done to explain the underlying processes of such a substantial transition of a professional role. This qualitative study conducts interviews that provide further evidence that the contemporary CFO is not only contributing but also consolidating strategy. In order to explain the addressed gap as well as the past and ongoing transition of the CFO, an alteration of Scott’s (1995) framework of regulative, normative and cognitive institutional pillars is elaborated that perceives these pillars not as distinct but as interdependent. This way, a conceptual model is provided that shows that the evolvement of professional roles can be explained by the interaction of this institutional concept. The foundation of professional roles is seen in the individuals, who occupy these roles. Therefore, concepts of identity creation are discussed and related to Scott’s institutional pillars. The elaborated relation between institutional pillars and identity creation proves as a valid framework for the processes that underlie the evolvement of the CFO’s role and its respective occupants. Furthermore, it is discussed how the evolvement of the CFO’s role affects others within the organization and that an application of the elaborated framework on other professional roles is possible.

Visa arbetsvilja: Arbetslinjen som moral, ritual och gruppsolidaritet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The subject of this study is the “work strategy” (arbetslinjen); the idea that work and active measures are preferred over cash benefits. The aim of the study is to investigate why the work strategy, which has been almost undisputed for nearly a century, has had widely changing contents over the years, what measures have been taken and which groups have been included. It also attempts to find out whether there is a correlation between unemployment rates, society and the different aspects of the work strategy. The study is conducted as an idea analysis, mainly of dissertations on the work strategy and public inquiries, and covers five time periods from the 1920’s until today. The theoretical framework is primarily founded on Randall Collins’ theory of morality, social rituals and group solidarity, but also on Erving Goffmans stigma theory.

The investigation shows, among other things, that the demands upon the unemployed and the aspects of the work strategy vary according to the unemployment rates. In the light of Collins’ theory high unemployment can be seen as a threat to the group morality, as there is then a greater risk of free-riders. It is moral to work and unmoral to receive cash benefits. To make themselves worthy of the benefits and show morality the unemployed must prove their willingness to work by accepting assigned tasks; measures, which are more characterized by control and discipline during times of high unemployment rates. These measures can be seen as social rituals which serve mainly to strengthen the group’s morality and solidarity. There are stratifications from how moral the individuals act. Working leads to high esteem in society, while unemployment implicates a stigma, as the norms of society are not reached.

Challenging the dichotomy of management and civil service: an institutional analysis of Swedish public management2015Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In the wake of public sector reforms, commonly referred to as New Public Management, it has been suggested that actors engaged in public administration are changing the manner in which they understand the public sector. According to these perspectives, public reforms informed by (neo-)liberal policy have caused instances of economification and a proliferation of economy and efficiency as important and dominating norms of contemporary public organisations. In this paper I posit the question of how actors’ engaged in public administration make sense of the turbulent and pivoting reforms within the public sector? The paper is written within an institutional theoretical perspective, where both an agency- and structural perspective is engaged in order to enable a holistic analysis. The empirical material consists of four focus group sessions, in total 25 “managers” discussing issues concerning their positions and tasks associated with being engaged as public administrators within the Swedish central government. It was found that actors rejected the incompatibleness of contemporary public management on the one hand and traditional civil service on the other. Rather, actors enacted compartmentalised, yet interdependent, perspectives wherein the two mentioned roles could be used simultaneously in everyday life. On the one hand an internal perspective was enacted wherein a managerial discourse and managerial techniques were used. On the other hand an external perspective was enacted in order to safeguard citizens’ rights within the modern welfare state. It is concluded that the previously held dichotomy between management and civil service is a fallacious one. Rather than subscribing to faulty theorising surrounding a shift or a blending/merger of administrative roles, researchers of public administration should adhere to the general point made in this paper: actors engaged in public administrators are Managers as well as Civil Servants. This has great implications for the future role of public administration.

"Alla kan utom jag": - Hur utanförskap och stigmatisering skapas och tar sig uttryck hos ofrivilligt barnlösa kvinnor2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper is grounded in the previous research that indicated that involuntary childless women feels stigmatized and outside society. The purpose of this paper was to find out how the feeling of being an outsider and a stigmatized person is created and takes form in the category involuntary childless women. I asked the questions; -In what parts of the interviewed women’s answers indicates that they are outsiders and stigmatized? –Who is creating the stigma and the outsiderness and how is it created? I answered these questions by interviewing six women in the ages of 28-40, who all had undergone In vitro fertilization-treatment and lived in heterosexual relationships. I used Erving Goffmans theory about stigma and Howard Beckers theory about outsiders to analyse the empiric data. The results show that these women indeed are stigmatized and outsiders, but it doesn’t evolve from the people around them, but from the women themselves. These women tend to cling on to everything that relates to pregnancies and babies, and because of this they embrace the fertility norms more than others. I also find that these women differs from Goffmans empiric results in his theory about stigma. The women in my study seems to want to be treated different than “normal people”. Even though they want help to remove their dysfunction, they also have high demands on their surroundings regarding respectful language and a considerate behaviour.

    Abstract [ru]

    Abstract [en]

The construction business is currently one of the most male-dominated industries in Sweden. The purpose of this thesis is to explore what requirement, expectations and opportunities women are experiencing in a construction company that is located in a big city and how can we understand it? I have interviewed six women on different positions in a company. By doing this I used the qualitative approach which has enabled me to generate an understanding for what kind of requirement, expectations and opportunities the women are experiencing in the company. The theories used in this thesis are mainly about gender systems, suppression techniques and glass roof.

The study has shown that the women in the company must have a strong character and personality to be able to cope with the construction industry. A number of women testify on how they need to show that they are worthy of the position they possess. As a woman you must integrate into the current gender system that exists within the company and at the workplace, while it is not expected to take anything seriously when men discriminate and harass a woman. However, opportunities have been developed for women in the industry. Previously women had the administrative tasks assigned to them, now women are awarded new advanced jobs. This indicates that the industry has evolved where new work for women is available.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is concerned with Sociology’s stance in the debate on Strong Artificial Intelligence, i.e. such AI that is able to shape new knowledge without human interference. There is a need for sociologists to realize the difference between two approaches to constructing AI systems: Symbolic AI (or Classic AI) and Distributed AI – DAI.Sociological literature shows a largely critical attitude towards Symbolic AI, an attitude that is justified. The main theme of this dissertation is that DAI is not only compatible with Sociology’s approach to what is social, but also constitutes an apt model of how a social system functions. This is consolidated with help from Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory and from Vygotsky-oriented education scientists who claim that processes leading to new knowledge are about expansion and not about problem solving. Problem solving only leads to elaborating existing knowledge. It is shown that human being has always used several types of artefacts and tools to produce culture and knowledge. This shows that humans are dependent on their environment and that knowledge is not only something that has to do with their brain, but also the rest of their bodies and their environments.Further, Strong AI is not about robots thinking in the same way as humans, but about holistic social processes where the actor does not need to have a complex functionality. This provides a good opportunity to explain what sociologists call emergency, i.e. how social processes shape new knowledge independent of human actors. The possibility of AI has to be evaluated in terms of human beings’ capacities to cope with reflexive processes. Luhmann teaches us that we have to see the difference between three different forms of reflexivity: self-reference, reflexivity and reflection. We contend that, in order to be able to shape new knowledge in expanding processes, there must be circumstances that allow reflection. Luhmann writes that knowledge-producing processes are dependent on capacities for reflection between the social systems and their environments. Strong AI has more capacity to handle these processes than humans have, while the strongest argument for strong DAI is that it can reach a far wider area than human beings’ brains can. This capacity for reflection is a better way of judging the capacity of strong AI, than questions about causal capacity and capacity for action.

Social Exclusion And Service Use Amongst Older Europeans2015Inngår i: Irish Ageing Studies Review, ISSN 1649-9972, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 38-38Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: This contribution aims to provide an overview of the main trends and phenomena contributing to the association between social exclusion and (health, social and long-term) care service use among older Europeans.

Methods: Data comes from measures on health, social and long-term care service usage, and related outcome indicators, from within a series of quantitative cross-European survey studies and from secondary data sources.

Results: Findings show that the lack of crucial services – such as transportation, primary health care services, or banking services – might represent a risk of exclusion in older age, this being true for instance in countries with large rural communities (e.g. Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, but also Norway). Nordic countries, such as the Netherlands, Iceland, Norway and Denmark, reveal to be particularly advanced in terms of home care provision. In this regard, data seem to suggest that the availability of formal care services and that of informal care are positively correlated, thus suggesting the existence of acrowding-in effect. The access to web-based services represents an additional field in which new and old exclusion risks might accumulate, as highlighted by the lack of such services in Southern and Eastern European countries.

Conclusions: Limitations in accessing services which are necessary in everyday life can heavily affect older people’s ability to remain independent and active, and thereby contribute to experiences of exclusion. The illustrated data show the critical areas in which policy should focus on to tackle current challenges that service exclusion poses for older people across Europe.

    Current LTC challenges in Italy2013Inngår i: The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging, ISSN 1279-7707, E-ISSN 1760-4788, Vol. 17, nr Supplement 1, June/july, s. S227-S227Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The rapid ageing of the Italian population is reflected by a growing demand for LTC services. As families are facing increasing difficulties in providing everyday elder care, the pressure on formal services is growing. At the same time, the current financial crisis is making the public response less and less able to provide the needed resources. As a consequence, the current approach of indirect public support to the private employment of migrant care workers (MCWs) through cash-for-care schemes is likely to continue.

Method: The presentation is based on a detailed analysis of empirical findings and policy documents, outlining the crucial features characterising the Italian LTC system and describing also some of the main differences existing between different regional care approaches.

Results: After adecade of increasing availability of publicly funded LTC services for older people, in some sectors, such as integrated home care, the audience of recipients has started receiving a lower number of hours of care. The mainly monetary focus of the Italian care regime has a clear incentivizing effect to employ foreign migrant care workers, often on an undeclared basis, to provide everyday elder care in Italian homes. Another crucial characteristic is the strong heterogeneity of Italian regions, according to which today different clusters of regions can beidentified, with strong inequalities in LTC provision.

Conclusion : Thelack of a coherent national LTC policy has been recently accompaniedby an increasing focus on cash-for-care payments, which in the future will require a stronger attention to care quality issues.

    Abstract [en]

Background: This contribution presents the evaluation provided by the students participating in the first International Summer School on Ageing (ISSA), highlighting whether the educational goals of this initiative have been achieved and possible improvements for the future.

Methods: The reported findings are based on the evaluation requested to ISSA participants on the very last day of the school, through a written questionnaires containing both closed and open questions. The 20 participants were on average just above 30-year-old, mostly females (70%) from European countries (80%), held a Master of Science in half of cases and were enrolled as PhD students in a social (35%) or medical (35%) discipline, with a record of 4 publications on average.

Results: Participants appreciated the introductory lectures (on biomedical, socio-economic and other dimensions of ageing), defining them clear (100%) and appropriate (90%). Mentors’ capacity to stimulate discussion was appreciated (85% agreed), as did participants’ opportunity to fully participate and interact (94%), while two thirds of participants agreed to have obtained new ideas for their work (65% and 60% respectively). All modules received a good evaluation, especially in terms of learning material provided and of possibility to participate in the discussion, while the opportunity to develop new ideas varied across the modules, mainly due to the participants’ different disciplinary background.

Conclusions: While the first ISSA seems to have fully achieved its original aims, future similar initiatives should have a stronger interactive approach and practical real-life group exercises.

Terrorist eller gärningsman?: En innehållsanalys kring medias framställningar av två terrorattentat2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The overall purpose of this essay is to contribute with knowledge about medias portraying. This by examining whether the two terrorists Rakhmat Akilov and Brenton Tarrant is presented differently in the two Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. These two terrorists were chosen because of their different backgrounds. It also aims to study whether the medias portrayal of the terrorists reproduce mechanisms between ”us and them”. The method that was used in this essay was a content analysis with a qualitative approach as the essay aims to examine the entirety of the articles and to capture the central content that they present.

The theories that has been used to analyze the empirical data is Orientalism by Edward Said and the theory of othering. These have been used as a key to understand the representations.

The result of this essay shows that the representations of the terrorists both have similarities and differences. The portraying of Akilov have focused on what sets him apart from ”us” and he is described as an individual who is a part of something structural. In the case of Brenton Tarrant he is presented from a individualistic perspective, where the attack is explained by the individual and not by the group.

Rör inte välfärden!: - Hur invandringens diskurs har förändrats sedan 19652016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to analyze how the discourse of immigrants and immigration has changed since 1965 and expose what mechanism control the discourse. The time periods that we choose to analyze were: 1965-1975, 1985-1995 and 2010-2016. These three eras were chosen based on the historical premise of Swedish immigration which concerns labor, refugee and family immigration. To shed light on this issue we used a mixed method of content analysis, more particularly, discourse analysis and argumentationsanalysis for the processing of our empirical data. Our empirical collection consisted of articles from the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens nyheter and the tabloid Aftonbladet. For our analysis we selected four different debate articles for each time period, newspaper or tabloid concerning immigrants and immigration. Altogether 24 articles were analyzed.

To understand the discourse of immigrants and immigration we used the classic theorists Foucault and Marx in the formation of our theoretical perspective. Based on our empirical data we found that the welfare state were closely connected to the discourse and that the discourse of immigration and immigrants could be understood through a dynamic model. The model shows the balance of power between an establishment and an opposition. The establishment, opposition and welfare are the mechanisms that do not only control the discourse but also causes the discourse to change.

    Abstract [en]

Title: To keep yourself to unwritten rules: Military womens experiences in an organization of male dominationAuthor: Frida Linehagen

The Swedish Armed Forces have traditionally been exclusively male, and risking life defending the country against the military attack by a foreign power has always been a privilege of a man. Over the last thirty-seven years the defence of our nation has become a shared responsibility between men and women. The Swedish Armed Forces has failed to fully integrate women into the organization. This is the reason why it is interesting to look into the issue taking into consideration the fact that there is still a significant gender imbalance today and plenty of room for progress remains.

The purpose of the study is first and foremost to create the understanding of the experience the female military personnel bring to the organisation, their abilities and how they perform in the realm dominated by men. Interviews have been chosen as a method for the study. Nine women of the Swedish Armed Forces were interviewed. The data was analyzed in light of Pierre Bourdieus theoretical concepts Cultural capital, Field, Habitus, Masculine domination and the related Symbolic violence.

The result of the study shows that the society puts demands to increase the equality between men and women in organizations where men dominate. At the same time the Armed Forces show inability and reluctance to address to the issue and create opportunities in order to bridge the gender gap. Women develop strategies not only to be able to contribute to the organisation they work for but also to advance in their military profession, to fit and rise to the top. For women in service it is a delicate balancing act between remaining a female and being fully accepted as a professional partner in the manly military culture.

    Abstract [sv]

Skating like a Derby Girl: Relationen mellan kropp, genus och klass2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to study how the use of the body in roller derby is related to gender and social class. The investigation is based on five qualitative interviews as well as seven observations of practices and games (bouts).

The theoretical frame is founded on theories by Young (2005) to get an understanding of women´s use of the body, Skeggs (2000) to relate femininity and respectability to class, as well as Bourdieu (1984), both as a background for Skeggs (2000) theory, as well as giving an understanding of the relation between participating in sports and social class position.

The investigation demonstrates, among other things, that the derby girls do not identify with the positions they find within sports and the informants have also changed their view on and relation to their own body through roller derby. The informants have also been able to demonstrate to others, as well as themselves, that their bodies do manage challengeable physical exercise. Bruises are physical capital within roller derby and a sign of criticism against the respectable femininity entering other fields.

The informants brake the female pattern of movement Young (2005) identify, at the same time as the “outside world” reminds them of their position as women related to the respectable femininity norm (Skeggs, 2000) they do not identify with. The informants express a position as outsiders, both within the sports world as well as not fitting in the respectable femininity norm, which is expressed through roller derby. The derby players are trying to find a place where they fit from the position of women and hence also from the social class perspective, in relation to that roller derby is a source of capital as well as the capital brought in matters.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at increasing knowledge about top managers' views on the climate of communication in an organizational context. The main question is "How do strategic managers describe the communication climate?" The study also concerns how the managers describe a communicative action that strives for voice and communicative action that strives for silence. The study also explore the influence of power on the communication climate. The study has a qualitative approach and builds on in-depth interviews with eleven experienced and senior executives. Through the sociologist Goffman's (2009) dramaturgic perspective and through theories of voice and silence, the study tries to interpret the respondents' views. The result shows that respondents describe the communication climate from opposition openness and silence. In an open climate there are open doors, creativity and focus on the business. In a quiet climate, the doors are closed. The focus is on tactics, policies and hidden personal agendas. Although the communication climate is not an established concept among the respondents, everyone strives for an open communication climate and they work differently to reach for it. The study's conclusions confirm previous research that the communication climate is a critical resource for the function and effectiveness of the workplace. The study's conclusions are also that managers should get support, for example from communication departments to learn to read the communication climate in their device and also get tools to develop the communication environment. Not least, managers need help to increase their self-awareness to understand how they personally contribute to an open or closed climate.

Progressiv Fritid: Meningsfull fritid ur ett post-progressivt jämlikhetsperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to explain the demarcations regarding which crimes that are seen as “acceptable” to commit as an police officer, and those who categorizes as “not acceptable”. The study is based on a qualitative, narrative method of semi-structured interviews. Antecedent research shows the strong subculture in the police force and the approach of seeing the police profession as a lifestyle. This study uses Erving Goffmans dramaturgic perspective on society by applying “Team”, “Front Stage and “Back Stage” to explain why the demarcations is the way it is. By studying “Front Stage” as police officers in front of the public and “Back Stage” as a closed space for the police officers, the essay intends to see how police officers, seen as a team, deal with wrongful acts made by an police officer. By using an constructed sorting model the study separated the data from ten interviewed police officers by categorizing into ways of legitimizing crimes commited by an police officer. The study aims to show understanding in why unethic and unlegal deeds by police officers are not reported, and therefore legitimized by the subculture. The conclusion of this essay is that there are two ways to legitimize wrongful acts of police officers. These two ways are by the norms “Us versus them” and the silence code. We created two concepts in combination with the use of the theories of Goffman. This paper will show how the two concepts, ”team offset” and ”team censoring”, can legitimize crimes as a part of the subculture. To be able to legitimize a wrongful act, the police officer needs to use his team. If the team can not legitimize the crime, it categorizes as “not acceptable”.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore how male auxiliary nurses relate with gender-coded norms and why they relate to these norms in their work at elderly-care, while also exploring what kind of masculine identities appear when they relate to the expected gender norm. The empirical material was gathered by using a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with seven male auxiliary nurses from three different municipalities in Sweden. By using Connells (2008) masculinity-theory, where gender is seen as a process where the male body is regarded as an object and an acting organ which produces gender differences, this theory will help the essay understand the problems surrounding how the male auxiliaries’ nurses relate and negotiate with gender-coded norms in their work at elderly-care. This dynamic aspect of masculinity and the relation with the gender-structure will be used to examine how male auxiliary nurses relate and negotiating with different form of masculinities. The results of this study have showcased the evidently traditional gender norm that exists within this line of work, as the informants could relate to the pressure in maintaining their masculine identity. In some cases, the traditional gender norms have given the informants advantages and disadvantages which will be thoroughly explained later in the essay. The data ultimately showcased the dynamic and complex structure of masculinity, as male auxiliary nurses are expected to behave within the traditional forms of masculinity while also creating a new form of masculinity as they assume their “feminine” profession.

    Abstract [en]

The impact of resources on social unrest is of increasing interest to politicalleaders, business and civil society. Recent events have highlighted that (lack of) access tocritical resources, including food, energy and water, can, in certain circumstances, lead toviolent demonstrations. In this paper, we assess a number of political fragility indices tosee whether they are good indicators of propensity to food riots. We found that the mostaccurate is the Political Instability and Absence of Violence Indicator of the WorldwideGovernance Indicators by the World Bank. We compute a likelihood of experiencing afood riot for each quartile of this index. We found that the self-sufficiency of food does notseem to affect the likelihood of the occurrence of food riots, but that the level of politicalstability of a country does have a role. In addition, we identify a monthly and annualthreshold for the Food and Agriculture Organisation Food Price Index, above which foodriots in fragile states are more likely to occur.

    Abstract [en]

Due to recent crisis and wars around The Middle East there are refugees on the move looking for a safe place to stay. Many seek refuge in Europe and some of them make it all the way up North to Sweden. Because of this Sweden is faced with a challenge, to help these newcomers to become a part of the Swedish society. Integration is a central political discussion and a lot of politicians look upon sport and leisure activities as the answer to a successful integration. With this as background the paper focuses on showing the day-to-day work with integration within a martial arts club where there’s a variety of ethnicities. The essay intends to use theories of socialization and a sharp definition of integration when it exams the martial arts club and their ability to handle the pressure from municipality and politicians when it comes to integrating newcomers. This is an observational study that also uses semi-structured interviews to find valid information. The result shows confusion with integration and assimilation and also the importance of successful socialization and a platform that aloud this to take place. Without these arenas where actual meetings occur, Sweden would maybe be facing an even bigger challenge when it comes to making these refugees or newcomers a working part of Swedish society.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is to broaden, expand and enrich the understanding of intimacy. To achieve this purpose, three framing questions will be proposed; How is intimacy practised in friendship and love relationships, What similiraties respectively differences exists in the ways of practising intimacy in friendship and love relationships, finally What social significances is intimacy built upon? A qualtitative researchmethod, interviewing 6 collegestudents was performed. Respondents statements forms the main empirical material, statements whch subsequently was ananlysed from theory. Theoretical choices are Anthony Giddens concepts of the pure relationship and confluent love. Further theoretical choices makes Georg Simmels concepts of exchange, dyad and intimacy. Finally David Morgans 'doing perspective' and dimensional proposal on the concept of intimacy forms an important theoretical choice. Important conclusions are that intimacy in friendship and love relationships is practised by revealing private emotions, thoughts and earnest sides of ones self. Largest differences in the ways of doing intimacy was that love relationships were privileged with larger exclusivity of revealing earnest sides of ones self. Secondary findings was that intimacy appeared to be a gendered practice and also that mutualness and the dyad formed social significances for practices og intimacy to be built upon.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate what factors that affect the inclusion of female coworkers in male dominated professions. The study investigates when women is no longer considered different in male dominated professions because of their gender, but instead are considered as equal because of their profession. The question of the inclusion of women in male dominated professions is inspired by the classical question of gender integration in workplaces. In this study the question of inclusion is considered a possible cultural consequence of integration. The theoretical framework of the study consists of Randall Collin’s thoughts on group affiliation, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter’s theory about tokenism. These theories are used to analyze the data of the study. The study was conducted through a survey that was distributed between three different male dominated companies in southern Sweden. The companies where representative of three different types of branches: one technical, one electrical and the third an industrial company. The study demonstrates that organizational factors are the primary causes that affect the inclusion of female coworkers in male dominated professions.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how temporary employment affects a work place and its employees and also, from a gender perspective, investigate how individuals relate to their insecure work situation. To achieve the purpose of the study, a qualitative approach was used, and the study is based on interviews with eight employees at a department store for consumer electronics. In order to understand and analyze the employees’ stories Guy Standing’s theory about the precariat and Raewyn Connell and Yvonne Hirdmans’ gender-theories were applied. The results of the study have shown that the current working conditions generate a high degree of insecurity and lack of control amongst the employees when it comes to future employment, work hours and income, which also affect the employees’ current and future personal life. The insecurity at the work place does furthermore cause high competition, disloyalty and absence of empathy amongst the workers, which weakens and challenges the norms that regulate human behavior. By, for example, stealing each other’s customers, the employees take measures to secure their position in the work place. Regarding the gender perspective the results have shown that both individuals who identify themselves as male and female feel insecure due to the work situation, but there are different, gender specified, ways to handle the insecurity. The individuals that identify themselves as male tend to handle the situation by for example highlight themselves and their work performance in order to maintain the superior position in the gender system, while it is characterizing for the femininity to be excessively self-critical.

    Abstract

Title: Building Trust: The contradiction between security and democracy in post apartheid South Africa

    Author: Magnus Persson

    Supervisor: Svante Lundberg

This paper aims to investigate the contradiction between security and democracy in post-apartheid South African policing, and was executed on the field together with the South African Police Service (SAPS). The theoretical point of departure is that trust between people, in relation to the institutions of society, is fundamental to democratic development. This in combination with previous research on police reform, police academy socialization, community policing and militarization has lead to the conclusion that a remilitarization process is under way and that a militaristic approach to policing is likely to be counterproductive in terms of achieving democratic development. The study has been executed on a South African police academy as well as at two different police stations with the combined methods of participatory observation and interviews.

Promoting self-empowerment and recognition of carers’ role: Piloting the INNOVAGE-Eurocarers platform in the Italian context2015Inngår i: Irish Ageing Studies Review, ISSN 1649-9972, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 88-88Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Caring for a dependent elderly can negatively affect family carer’s psychological and physical health, as well as social, professional and personal life. In the Italian context, there are very few web-based servicestargeting these users.

Methods: A sample of around 60 carers of older people affected by dementia was involved. Users could access the following services: information resources; e-learning resources; individual support via private messages, chat and video-chat; group support via social network and forum. A psychologist was engaged as moderator of interactive services. Other two psychologists from an Alzheimer Day Centre were available via video chat and forum for individual support. In order to improve participation, two SMSs per week were sent to all carers as reminders and stimulation to use web services.

Results: Overall, users’ accesses concentrated on information resources area, social network and forum, which were really appreciated and felt as a useful “protected environment”. Around 15 users accessed the web platform at least once every two weeks, whereas 7carers never accessed the platform and very limited dropouts from the study occurred. Stimulation strategy by SMSs was successful to retain and involve users. Low digital skills and poor experience with on-line services represented a main barrier for usage.

Conclusions: The new developed platform and its services can address needs of Italian family carers and improve critical dimensions of quality of life. The possibility to get trustful information and dedicated support in contexts where there is a lack of formal services was considered extremely important by users.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is in social studies about which factors could explain the relationship between corruption and economic growth on the case of China by analyzing Mauro's theory and Jianming Ren's theory. After analyzing the data of corruption trends and economic growth, the author finds these two theories can't explain the Chinese case. Then the author discussed about the other three factors, government policy, government structure and culture. These three factors could explain the relationship between corruption and economic growth.

Traditioner: Jag vill inte längre vara Lucia2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

After making an observation that young people wish to maintain traditions, but they themselves do not wish to attend, lead to a curiosity to examine if traditions serve any purpose for the young people of today. The discrepancies between that the young people say that it is important to preserve traditions versus that themselves do not wish to participate leads us to believe that traditions fills some kind of function but the question is – What function is this? The purpose of this research is to find out what purpose traditions have for young people and also look for the answer to why young people refrain from participating in certain traditions.

The results are built from answers from interviews with 36 young people (19 girls and 17 boys) in the ages of 17 – 19 years old.

Theoretical frames that helps answer the questions in this paper are represented by theories from Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu, Émile Durkheim and Erving Goffman.

The results shows that traditions fills the following function, - maintaining social relationships and connections at different times and in different contexts, - contributing to interaction and connectedness, - legitimately be allowed to be family-oriented, - opportunity to provide a desirable appearance and a desired identity. The results also shows that traditions have a function to exclude when a person is not included in a social context

The results show that choosing to refrain from participating has to do with that we live in a post–traditional society that opens up opportunities to make choices. Our desire to keep traditions is based on our upbringing and in our habits

A cross-national environmental cluster collaboration: Shifting between an analytical and management level of the triple helix2015Inngår i: Science and Public Policy, ISSN 0302-3427, E-ISSN 1471-5430, Vol. 42, nr 4, s. 583-593Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The STInno project, which was part of the EU Framework Programme 7 aimed to minimise thedistance between south–north regions in Europe with a specific focus on wastewater treatmentclusters. Three triple helix collaborations from three different countries participated, using theirknowledge to work on a case study of olive mill wastewaters. The objective of this paper was tostudy how the triple helix functioned in practice. Results showed that a management model of thetriple helix is somewhat different from the analytical model. A shift between these two viewsoccurred during the project and the participants had to relate to this, as it had an effect onthe outcomes. Concepts of social capital and trust are used to further elaborate on this byemphasising the importance of the people side of the triple helix and how the original, analyticalmodel can be limiting when used in management practice.

Overcoming the Triple Helix Boundaries in an Environmental Research Collaboration2017Inngår i: Science and Public Policy, ISSN 0302-3427, E-ISSN 1471-5430, Vol. 44, nr 2, s. 153-162Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Cross-sector interactions between university and other sectors are increasingly important to contemporary knowledge production. However, there are few guidelines for conducting such interactions at the micro-level of actor or research group. The aim of this study was to provide a better understanding of cross-sector collaboration by drawing upon the theory of knowledge boundaries. The main author worked as an action researcher, specifically an interactive researcher, within an environmental research group that was focused on solving on-site industry wastewater issues. Using this approach, we created arenas for dialogue between sectors. During this three-year European Union project, built on three years of previous research, there was an increased demand for the group to develop applied results and to interact with other sectors. Thus, the researchers were challenged to cross boundaries and share their knowledge with partners outside academia. We argue that difficulties are encountered when crossing information process-oriented, cultural, and political boundaries. These difficulties are related to the move between Mode 1 and Mode 2 of knowledge production and the triple helix approach. Solutions to these issues were solved, in part, by the use of boundary spanners and boundary management.
