    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explain how the work with unaccompanied children´s individual needs is affected by an increased workload at residential care homes for unaccompanied children. More specifically it´s aim was to critically analyse how the professional approach is affected by an increased workload. The study was based on eight semi-structured interviews with professionals that work at residential care homes for unaccompanied children. The theories that have been the basis for the analysis is Ulla Holms theory of professional approach and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The result of the essay shows that the increased workload affects the professional’s ability to work with a professional approach with the children’s needs. The important need of safe relationships and a safe environment have been affected by an increased number of children placed, double occupancy in some rooms and an increased staff turnover. The staff found it hard to keep a good professional approach in a demanding and challenging environment when the right conditions are experienced as missing.  Simply the time is not enough and major difficulties occur for the personal to handle the lodge and at the same time have time for the children living there. The situation has resulted in a focus on group-oriented care that complicate the accommodation of the children's individual needs.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study is to understand how first-line managers lead their employees in the implementation of social service legislated value-base for elderly people. We wanted to understand what kind of leadership the managers used and how this leadership is formed by their acting space. Method: For this study is a qualitative method used. Trough semi-structured interviews, with 7 first-line managers, the empirical data were collected. Theory: For the analysis of the empirical data was Kurt Lewin’s three classic leadershipstyles used; the autocracy, the democracy and laissez-faire, and the theoretical concept of acting space. Result: The result of the study showed that the most common leader-style is the democracy style among the first-line managers. In the work with the social service legislated value-base for elderly people it is important to be a present leader that supports and include the employees in this work. However there are situations where the leader has to use an autocracy leader-style. The leadership is shaped by the acting space the first-line manager has. It can be affected by the organizational conditions like resources and the possibility of education for both the managers and the employees.

Public affairs, privacy, and family stress: a case study in rural northern Sweden in the mid-nineteenth century2013Ingår i: The History of the Family, ISSN 1081-602X, E-ISSN 1873-5398, Vol. 18, nr 1, s. 68-82Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article is a case study based on court records. What seems initially to be a petty theft gives rise to remarkable events. Affairs that are initially private later become public. Various events in and around the court throw light upon the way court and community respond to family stress in a mid-nineteenth century rural northern Swedish community. Testimonies by a large number of witnesses in court reveal a society in transition with elements of a money market, which means here a huge amount of ready money in circulation and arenas ready to shelter private transactions.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to illuminate social worker’s perception of social class within the Swedish social service system. This study therefor examine if social class contributes to the production and reproduction of the client and what impact social class has on the interaction between client and social workers. The study was conducted with qualitative semi-structured interviews with social workers from three different departments of social service. The theoretical approach is Yeheskel Hasenfeld’s theory about moral practices in welfare organisations, Michael Lipsky and Roine Johansson’s theories about client construction and Pierre Bourdieu’s class theory. The conclusion of this study is that social class affects individual conditions and opportunities in Swedish social service. Social worker’s perceptions of social class have an impact on the construction of clients and will affect what level of service a client receives.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze how teenage girls and boys are judged differently by their socially destructed behavior in the context of social- and legal system in Sweden. My focus has been to illustrate how risk factors are expressed differently depending on gender notion. The study is based on a document analysis of eight legal cases, applied by the social welfare board. I have used a social constructivist perspective to analyze the collected data, since the legal texts are a construction produced by the social- and legal systems. This study theory has been inspired by Judith Butlers theory, which focuses on normative frameworks on gender and sexuality. My conclusion illustrates that the authors who produced the legal texts, from the social- and legal system, seemed to perceive more risk in girls than in boys. The risk factors with girls often tend to problematize their sexuality and vagabonding. On the other hand, the analyze illustrates concrete evidence that the boys risk factors problematized their drug use and criminal behavior.

Kränkande behandling via sociala medier: En kvalitativ studie om skolpersonalens syn på kränkande behandling via sociala medier2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine if and to what extent the personnel at the local school perceive offensive treatment through the social media among the students and what the personnel thinks about the responsibility of the school to prevent this type of abuse. Offensive treatment through the social media has become a common occurrence among youth and affects health in both psychological and physical ways. As offensive treatment through the social media often takes place outside of school in the students spare time the responsibility of their health is unclear. But since it affects their school results the school has a responsibility to act, which is confirmed by legislation. However, the legislation does not mention offensive treatment through the social media and the school has no distinct guidelines to prevent this form of offensive treatment. Therefore many schools use prevention programs designed for traditional bullying and it is based on local conditions in each school. This leads to differences among how school handle offensive treatment through the social media. It is therefore interesting to investigate how the school personnel perceive offensive treatment through the social media as it affects their work against it.This study is based on the results from qualitative semi – structured interviews with school- and leisure personnel from three different secondary schools. The results show that there is a significant difference between how the school personnel understand the occurrence of offensive treatment through the social media among the students in the different schools and how the school personnel handle it. The measures that are updated and implemented in these schools are dependent on the prevailing climate at each school, which affects the understanding of the problem and its existence.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze legal texts under the law with special provisions for the care of children, to create a deeper understanding of, and if so, how social workers in the Swedish social services and courts construct different discourses on culture and violence. Compulsory care of children according to the law mentioned above is one of the biggest intervention the Swedish state has the authority to do against individuals. Swedish courts decide whether the child should be taken into care based on the social services investigation. The empirical data for the study is eight legal texts, where the child was abused by the legal guardian, which have been studied through discourse analysis. Discourse focuses on how people through language construct and reconstruct perceptions of the reality. The focus of the analysis was to find constructions of subject positions, categories and relations. The results of the analysis showed that the selected legal texts constructs stereotypical ideas about “honour culture” and gives culture a great explanatory value to the violence practiced by people assigned the “honour culture”. The “Swedish culture” on the contrary, was made invisible and was given no explanatory value to the violence. Instead the violence was given social and individual explanations. The selected legal documents had a tendency to construct perceptions of “honour culture” and honour related violence in a stereotypical and homogeneous way.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to understand how the family home secretary reasons and thinks and how they express themselves in their actions towards the family home’s biological children. The method used is qualitative semi-structured interviews, involving six family home secretaries from four different municipalities. The results were analyzed with the help of two theories – the theory of grassroots bureaucracy and the sociology of childhood theory. From the collective views of all informants, the biological children’s attitude towards the family home mandate is considered important. However, participation from the biological children is limited. Education and guidance is directed solely towards the family home parents, without any active involvement from the biological children in these efforts. Some of the informants stress that they as professionals must be better at paying attention to the biological children than what prevails today. The collective results show that family home parents are expected to take great responsibility for their biological children as well as their participation and well-being within the family home mandate.

    Abstract [sv]

Berger & Luckmann, 2011).

    Abstract [en]

Over the last few decades there has been a significant increase when it comes to mental ill health amongst Swedish schoolchildren. The school counselor has a crucial role both when it comes to detecting and to deal with these social problems. But according to recent studies the school counselors’ profession seems to lack a universal-based defined job description which has led to a decreased autonomy as well as legitimacy-related issues. This made us ask ourselves if the school counselors’ competence is used to its full potential.

The overarching purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how school social workers experience and perceive health-promoting work based on their professional role. The specific aims were to answer the following questions: How do school teachers experience health promotion at school? How does the school counselor perceive their professional role? Our method in order to collect our empirical data was to through semistructured interviews with six school counselors in Sweden. To help increase the understanding of our data we used profession-theory and also role-theory.

The summarized findings are that the school counselors are a part of a group created to support the schoolchildren’s health. This group is heavily affected by the school organization’s resource assets and the school counselors’ perception is that there aren’t enough time nor enough professionals working with school-based health-promotion compared to the amount of students attending the school. We also found that the school counselors have different room, a different degree of autonomy, in order to influence the structure of the health-promoting work at school. Our conclusion is that this difference seems to depend on the principal as well as on the type of employment the school counselor has. The externally employed school counselor experienced much more autonomy compared to the internal employees. Furthermore, the school principal is proven to have a strong impact on the school counselors’ professional role and the school counselors have experienced legitimacy-related issues towards certain teachers due to their undefined job description.

Title - Within the social services approach: A qualitative interview study of the social services attitudes towards young offenders

    Supervisor: Melker Labory

    Assessor: Ulf Drugge

The purpose of this study was to see the social workers attitude towards young offenders and how this can affect the teenagers. The theoretical perspectives have been the theory of street-Level Bureaucracy, social constructivism and Stages of change. The material has been collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews and email-interviews with the social workers. The aim of this study was to examine if the social workers uses their theoretical experiences about their attitudes in their practical work and if their response can raise or reduce the young offenders motivation to change their behaviour. To collect information it was chosen that this study would only concentrate on the social workers opinions. This is to ensure the relevance of the social work practice. The social workers, who were chosen, were limited to those who in one way or another come in contact with the young offenders between the ages of 15-17 years, on a regular basis. The collected data was contrasted with the previous research and was analysed from the above perspectives. The authors of this study were interested to see the professionals’ thoughts and experiences on their theoretical and practical work, which both include the attitudes and their motivational work with the young offenders. The results show that the social workers have a great responsibility in strengthen the young offenders to discover their inner motivation so they can change their criminal behaviour.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how women with drug- and alcohol abuse describes addiction stigma related to female ideals. This study has a social constructivist approach. The empirical data is collected by reading seven autobiographies written by women with drug- and/or alcohol abuse. The result has been analysed through Goffmans social theory. The findings indicate that the abuse and the shame it is resulting in has a negative effect on the women’s sense of self, self-esteem  and therefore on their identity.

Kulturellt relevant socialt arbete?: En fältstudie i en SOS-barnby, Swaziland2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how SOS Children's Villages as an organization in Swaziland is affected by, and takes into account, the cultural, organizational and societal context in which it acts. Material was gathered through a field study during one month in one of the three SOS Children's Villages in Swaziland. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on the result from 12 semi-structured interviews with village mothers and other representatives from the organization. The other representatives were: social worker, program director, child and youth development coordinator, board member and educational manager. Since this study is both characterized by a specific historical, cultural and organizational context, we decided to connect the postcolonial perspective with an organization theory with focus on the concepts of culture, power and a children’s right perspective. The result from the study showed that SOS Children's village is affected by and takes into account the cultural and societal context in Swaziland in several ways. They do so, mainly by inlvolving the children in cultural values and activites. The result also showed that the village is influenced by the organizational field, because the SOS-Children´s village is in need of creating legitimacy. However, it becomes thus a dilemma how much the social work should be built upon, adapted, or should take into account the cultural, organizational and societal contexts to not maintain colonial worldviews.

    Abstract [sv]

Conceptions of Immigrant Integration and Racism Among Social Workers in Sweden2017Ingår i: Journal of Progressive Human Services, ISSN 1042-8232, E-ISSN 1540-7616, Vol. 28, nr 1, s. 6-35, artikel-id 1249242Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Drawing on 22 qualitative interviews with social workers in Sweden, this article analyzes how social workers conceive immigrant integration and racism and tackle racism within their institutions and the wider Swedish society. The majority of the white social workers framed integration in relation to cultural differences and denied or minimized the role of racism in structuring their services and the ethnic relations in Sweden. In contrast, social workers with immigrant backgrounds were less compromising in discussing racism and assumed it as a problem both for themselves as institutional actors and as immigrants in everyday life and institutional settings. Social institutions in Sweden have been important actors in endorsing equality and accommodating differences. However, it is of paramount importance for social justice-minded social workers to identify and unsettle those structures and discourses that enable racist and discriminatory policies and practices against those groups who are not viewed as “core” members of the Swedish society. The absence of anti-racist social work within Swedish social work is primarily related to the idea of color-blind welfare universalism that is assumed to transcend the particularity of the needs, experiences, and perspectives of different groups in Sweden. While integration is envisioned and framed as a political project of inclusion of non-white immigrants, it tends to become a political device through which hierarchies of belonging are constructed. Following such conception of integration, cultural/religious differences and equality are framed as conflicting where cultural conformity underpinned by assimilationist discourses becomes a requirement for political, social, and economic equality.

Constructing Cultural Otherness Within the Swedish Welfare State: The Cases of Social Workers in Sweden2015Ingår i: Qualitative Social Work, ISSN 1473-3250, E-ISSN 1741-3117, Vol. 14, nr 4, s. 554-571Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to analyze how social workers frame the social problems of immigrant clients in Sweden. The study is based on in-depth interviews with 20 social workers in three different Swedish municipalities. While Swedish social work often assumes a discourse of color-blindness and universalism, this study indicates that Swedish social workers not only see cultural differences but also regard these differences as central when they frame, assess, and formulate their interventions. The discourse of culturalization not only produces and reinforces the ideas of cultural hierarchy and Swedish superiority, but it also tends to obstruct non-European immigrants from equal participation in the Swedish society since they are not allowed to enjoy their full citizenship. Consequently, there is a need for social work in Sweden to rethink its culturalist framework and go beyond cultural reductionism and take into consideration other issues such as unemployment, housing conditions, poverty, social isolation, marginalization, and ethnic discrimination.

This paper investigates the phenomenon of statelessness and political belonging in a world of unequal nation-states and citizenship regimes. In so doing it will examine the theoretical construction and conceptions of the stateless in contemporary social and political thought and assess their implications for the conceptions of shared identity and citizenship rights in the legal-political framework of the nation-state and international legal processes and practices. In the academic field statelessness has been largely viewed in relation to the ‘lack’ of citizenship and the acquisition of citizenship has therefore been presented as a solution to statelessness. Although citizenship rights and membership of an internationally recognized state are central to the human rights of political subjects in the contemporary world, the conditions and experiences of statelessness do not fade away through acquisition of formal citizenship as the persistent political, legal and military struggles of the stateless groups around the world show. It is therefore important to investigate how notions of political belonging underpinning political projects and collective action of the stateless peoples are constructed and how they inform and shape the evolution of national consciousness among them. Political belonging creates collective goals to sustain or transform political order. This study combines theoretical investigation of statelessness and citizenship with empirical field research on the subjective experiences of the phenomena among the Kurds. Through deploying a narrative inquiry and in-depth interviews, this project will use the narratives of Kurdish migrants in Sweden and the UK to analyze how national consciousness emerges in the absence of a nation-state but also the role of the nation-state in shaping discourses about statelessness and political belonging outside of the ‘original’ homelands.

Nationalism, Cosmopolitanism and Statelessness: An interview with Craig Calhoun2014Ingår i: Kurdish Studies journal, ISSN 2051-4883, E-ISSN 2051-4891, Vol. 3, nr 1, s. 61-74Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This interview with Professor Craig Calhoun expands on issues of nationalism and cosmopolitanism in relation to the question of statelessness. Since the 1990s, Calhoun has worked on nationalism, ethnicity and cosmopolitanism. For Calhoun, nations still matter despite post-national and cosmopolitan elaboration and repudiation of so-called parochial and provincialised identities like nation or national identity and citizenship. In this interview, Calhoun dis-cusses the material, political and cultural situations of the Kurds in the Middle East and the role of Kurdish nationalism in the context of statelessness. Calhoun finds class-based understanding of inequalities between the Kurds and their dominant others in the Middle East as problematic and incomplete since the cultural, political and material inequalities are intimately interlinked in rendering the Kurds to a subordinated position in the states they inhabit. The interview also engages with diasporic identities and examines how countries of residence can impinge on the identity formation of diasporas and how they obstruct or facilitate migrants translating their citizenship status into the right to have rights (Arendt). An important issue that Calhoun discusses is that there are both asymmetrical power relations between dominated (Kurdish) and dominating nationalisms (Turkish, Iraqi, Iranian and Syrian) and within the same nationalisms.

    Abstract [en]

Mass displacement in the Middle East is a major political challenge for contemporary Middle Eastern and Western states. As a consequence, statelessness has emerged as one of the central political issues in relation to the collapse and weakening of the states in the Middle East. Through deploying a qualitative inquiry and interviews with 50 Kurdish immigrants, this article investigates how members of Kurdish diasporas in Sweden and the UK conceive and experience statelessness in a world of unequal nation-states and hierarchical citizenship. Since diasporas are important non-state actors in nation-building processes, it is important to analyse their diasporic visions and the ways they challenge or reinforce the power of the nation-state in the context of migration. While from a legal or a right-based approach, the solution to statelessness is found in acquisition of a nationality/citizenship, I posit that in a world structured by the political normativity of the nation-state, nations without states will continue to be in search of national self-determination, political autonomy and sovereignty in the international comity of sovereign nations.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain and increase knowledge about intimate partner violence, also known as domestic violence. The research questions we aim to answer are how professionals define violence, the causes behind why so many men use violence against their significant other and, furthermore, what kind of support and treatment those men can be offered. To answer these questions, we have made eight semi-structured qualitative interviews with respondents working with treatment for men who has used or still use violence against women in intimate partner relationships. The professionals represent different organizations connected to "Rikskriscentrum" and offer support and treatment for both men and women. The result of the study shows that all respondents define violence similary. Most of them use a quite wide definition showing that violence is so much more than just physical abuse. The support and treatment offered for intimate partner violence is described substantially similary too. Why many men use violence in their intimate partner relationships is the question who turned out to be most complex and hard to answer. We have discussed our main questions using theories about gender and the process of normalization in domestic violence. Our reasoning is also connected to a social context, often referred to as a socio-economic model.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study was to understand and analyze how Swedish social workers define and prevent threats and violence at the workplace. The social workers that we interviewed were to help people who abuse alcohol and drugs. The aim was also to understand which causes the social workers could see how that the threats and violence arose. The study was based on eight individual semi-structured interviews in three different municipalities, but not in a comparative purpose. The empirical data were analyzed with the help of Erving Goffman´s dramaturgical perspective and social constructivism. The main results of the study showed that social workers were not exposed to major violent situations. There was no clear definition of threats and violence, instead the definitions were individually experienced. The result also showed that the social workers had a preventative approach against threats and violence. The causes of unwanted situations were linked to authorities compelling elements and exercise of power.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on how politicians’ standars were represented in the debate about assisted reproduction of single women and surrogacy in Sweden. And also which arguments the politicians performed on both issues. The study was based on the protocol 2011/12:91 from the parliamentary debate in Sweden. The aim of the study was to examine political standards is identified according to parenting and family in the assisted reproduction and surrogacy debate. The empirical material has been analyzed through social constructivism as a theory and standard critical perspective related to normality. Argument analysis was used as a method to identify pro et contra arguments on the issues. Two theses from the protocol 2011/12:91 was identified and analyzed. The first thesis was "Every child has a right to have both a mother and a father" and the second thesis was, "Every human should have an opportunity to have children". Pro arguments to the first thesis was that a child has a right to know its genetic origin and to be nursed by both its parents as far as possible. They meant that the traditional family constellation with a mother and a father is a good family to raise a child within. Contra arguments in this issue also meant that the child has a right to know its genetic origin, and therefore should get this right in Sweden to reduce the risk that mothers get infertility treatment abroad with a donor that is anonymous. Additional contra arguments in this thesis was that the most important thing for a child is to grow up in a family with love and care, regardless of family constellation. Pro arguments to the last thesis, "Every human should have an opportunity to have children" was that it is a biological instinct to reproduce and politicians should therefore not stand in the way by prohibiting single women to get assisted reproduction. Contra argument to this thesis was that parenting is an impossible question to fairness. They meant that if you do not have the physical ability to have children, society should not help you with this matter. They also meant that if we legislate surrogacy in Sweden it is a big risk that women become a commodity in the matter. And this risk outweigh parents’ desire to have children.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines how perceptions of competence affect the care of older persons, and the values and vocational conceptions of care work and care recipients that are tied to the perceptions of what skills that are needed and why. Competence is defined by three parts with relevance for the content of care work: what knowledge the care workers should have, what tasks they should perform and how they should respond to care recipients. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how the care managers' and care workers' perceptions of competence form the direction of the care work and how that direction relates to the care recipients’ perceptions of and expectations on the care work.

The care work is characterised by what is analysed as an activation of the recipients - that the recipients themselves should perform as much of the care work as possible. The activation aims at managing the decay of the aging body and is motivated by a vocational conception of the care recipients as different from others, with designations as grateful and passive. This conception is analysed as generation character based on an idea among the care managers and care workers that the society in which the recipients grew up gave them certain cognitive prerequisites that have to be managed in the practical care work.

The care recipients in the study have opposing conceptions and perceptions of care work compared with the care managers and care workers. The recipients’ central objective with the care work is to prevent what has been interpreted as the disrepair of the home. The care recipients’ position in the organisation raises the problem of loyalty towards the care workers and in some sense the care managers. Their loyalty reduces their ability to complain and to influence their situation to the better.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis analyses women’s stories and experiences of living in a relationship with domestic violence. The study is done in order to gain a deeper understanding of what the retaining mechanisms are that prevents women from leaving their partner. The research is carried out by the usage of qualitative textual analysis of autobiographical novels. With the support of the theories of shame and the normalization process it is possible to accentuate how women are staying in their relationships because of the mental degradation caused by the man. The retaining mechanisms are numerous and complex and both socio-economic and psychological factors contribute to that women stay in the relationship, which previous research also has concluded. This research concludes that the retaining mechanisms evolve and change throughout the relationship. The women’s reason for staying in the relationship is in the beginning their love for the man but later on in the relationship it evolves further into embracing the reality of the man and making the reasons for the violence legitimate

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how social workers and pree-school teachers resonate about their experiences of cooperation with each other, in relation to maltreated children and the duty to report. Several studies show that there is a difference between how many children that is suspected of maltreatment and how many that are reported to social service. In Sweden, pre-school staff are obliged to notify the suspicion of child abuse according to 14: 1 SoL, but previous research indicates that the obligation to declare is not used to the extent that it should. One reason for the low notification rate is  the interaction between preschool and the social services shortcomings. Therefore, we believe it is relevant to examine how the cooperation really looks like between the organizations, when the child is being abused or at risk of suffering. The results of the study are based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with four preschool teachers and four administrators. The results show that the cooperation between the organizations needs to be strengthened in relation to maltreated children. However, there are no creative ideas on how this should be done, and there are doubts about whose responsibility it is to achieve an improved cooperation The results are explained and analyzed with neo-institutionell theory, Danemarks theoretical starting point and Lipsky theory of grassroots bureaucrats.

The purpose of our study is to investigate what difference a shared leadership can make in an organization. We also wanted to know how social work professionals describe shared leadership and how its changes and consequences work out in an organization. To be able to answer the purpose of this study, we decided to do a case study. The interviews are conducted in an social work organization. We have conducted a focus group interview with three employees, an interview with each of the two area managers having a shared leadership, an interview with the social manager, an interview with the operations manager and one with a politician. In this study we used both an abductive and a qualitative approach by doing six interviews. The conclusion of our study is that the implement of a shared leadership have many advantages for the organization-from the employees at the bottom to the politician at the top. The results show that it is not an easy task to perform a shared leadership. It takes two willingly people and a lot of characteristics to do it. We have learned that this type of leadership is not for all managers. Some managers want to run the show on their own.

Resisting social death with dignity. The strategy of re-escaping among young asylum-seekers in the Wake of Sweden's sharpened asylum laws2020Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines experiences of 'social death', and the strategy of 're-escaping', following sharpened Swedish asylum laws and practice. The arguments stem from ethnographic research with people who arrived in Sweden as 'unaccompanied minors' between 2014 and 2016. The participants have experienced step-by-step rejection processes from both the Migration Agency and social services, resulting in homelessness, pennilessness and a dependency on civil society goodwill. Some research participants remain in Sweden while others have re-escaped searching for asylum elsewhere in Europe. It is argued that the treatment from the Swedish Migration Agency and the social services has contributed to situating these young asylum-seekers in a position of 'social death', a condition lacking hope and opportunities for agency where they are not treated as fully human or grievable. The aim is to analyse their experiences of social and legal ostracism in Sweden and the act of 're-escaping' to other countries as a strategy not only to gain asylum, but also belongingness, self-control and dignity. While such handling of oppression may boost dignity and self-control, it may also lead to prolonged insecurity where individuals risk becoming permanent refugees stuck in precariousness within European borders.

    Abstract [en]

In this article we address the constructionof familiarity and distance in Swedish district courtcases, involving young men with both immigrantand Swedish backgrounds. Through ethnographicobservations of 40 trials related to street crimes, wehave found different qualities of social interaction that distinguish immigrant background and Swed-ish background cases from each other. These distinc-tions, disfavouring young men with immigrant back-ground, are built up through a series of practices and events that follow taken-for-granted behaviourand details in interaction, such as speech, laughter, choice of words to describe the accused and trust inSwedish witnesses. In conclusion, we argue for thenecessity of detailed, close-up studies of courtroom action and interaction to understand statistical find-ings of discrimination and disfavouring of certain groups of immigrants in court and elsewhere in thejudicial process.

    Abstract [en]

There has been a high influx of unaccompanied refugee children who have come to Sweden, the number increased particularly in 2015 compared with previous years. It is the municipalities, and therefor the social services, responsibility to provide adequate care for this children. The purpose of the study is to gain an understanding of the social services work and opportunities to meet the needs of unaccompanied children in accordance with the child's best, in relation to the convention on the rights of the child. The study is based on a qualitative approach and the method is semi-structured interviews with three managers in the field and three social workers. According to the results, social services has faced a challenge in meeting the needs of unaccompanied children in both a lack of resources such as accommodations and lack of social workers. The results also show that there are some difficulties to consider the child's best in the work with the unaccompanied children, partly to the lack of resources wich inhibits the ability to meet the child's wishes and because of differences of opinion about what is best for the child. The organisation has faced a change in order to cope with the large influx of unaccompanied children and therefore organization theory is used in the analysis. Theoretical concepts that is used in the study is discretion and street level bureaucracy due the social workers is street level bureaucracies whose work with unaccompanied children is affected by their discretion given by the organization.

    Abstract [en]

It is said that leadership success can be measured by the well-being of employees therefore we believe it becomes relevant to research the employee’s preferences concerning which skills they believe; a good enough leadership should entail. However previous leadership research tends to focus on the opinions of the middle managers rather than the employees themselves. Therefor the following study will conduct semi-structured individual and thematic group-interviews to depict the ideas of both middle managers and employees within five different municipal care-organizations. Throughout the study an employee-perspective have been added to further investigate the most desired leadership skills vis-à-vis the actual leadership that occurs within municipal care operations to highlight differences and similarities. The following study can conclude that having a relationship between employees and middle managers is something that is important and something that everyone thinks is a prerequisite. The study can also draw conclusions surrounding the most preferred leadership skills. Employees need to feel involved and that the middle manager is understanding and insightful regarding the different roles and opinions of the employees. The studies theoretical theory, symbolic interactionism and Goffman's dramaturgy became helpful tools in order to analyze and understand how relationships are expressed and how communication can be interpreted. Furthermore, middle managers and employees agreed that it is difficult for middle managers to work with an employee-perspective in municipal care, since all performers have different perspectives and priorities, which means that they might have different opinions about which leadership qualities they consider to be most important. A leadership with an employee-perspective can be compromised by the fact that middle managers have many areas of responsibilities. Municipal care operations are an ever-growing workplace and a last home for many people which also can affect a middle managers ability to possess an employee-perspective.

    Abstract [en]

”Between normal and abnormal” is a qualitative literature study about adults with Aspergers syndrom. The study aims to understand how a person with Asperger syndrome understand himself. The study is built around two issues. These are; how does a person with Aspergers syndrom describe himself and how does the diagnos influence the self-image. The study interpreted four autobiographical books written by individuals with Asperger's syndrome based on a social constructive and social psychological approach.

There is a risk that people who do not have the right or enough information about what an Asperger Diagnosis involves misunderstand the individual. This increases the risk that individuals with Asperger's syndrome may be devalued or get expectations of themselves that will be difficult to achieve. This may in turn have implications for self-esteem and self-perception. The results demonstrate that all writers feel that they are misunderstood, failed and different. The comparison is made with the "normal" and the feeling of being different gives a negative association. However, it also appears that when the diagnosis is obtained, there is a change in their understanding of the difficulties and life experiences they have. The feeling of being different gets a more positive association when their behavior becomes more legitimate, and there arises a sense of being part of the Asperger group which strengthens their self-esteem. Understanding themselves as deviant and odd change to a feeling of being normal though normal in a different way. This is also confirmed by other research (Larsson, 2007). The study also demonstrates that there is a dilemma between being the diagnos and being ones own person with ones own personality.

'I Got to Know Myself Better, My Failings and Faults': Young People's Understandings of being Assessed in Secure Accommodation2017Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research, ISSN 1103-3088, E-ISSN 1741-3222, Vol. 25, nr 2, s. 124-140Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores young people's understandings of assessments conducted in secure accommodation. The concepts of institutional identity' and text-mediated' actions have been used in the analysis. The main empirical material is repeated interviews with assessed young people during a two-year period. In the findings, the stories of three young people display understandings of appreciation, disappointment and self-development. The assessments seem to have made the youths aware of their failings and faults'. An analysis of the written assessments found institutional identities of inner problems and unstructured everyday lives'. In conclusion, the young people's understandings of the meanings and implications of the assessments are suggested to be connected to the caseworkers' text-mediated actions and their position in the assessment process. The young people's stories indicate the need to consider the institutional context of the assessments and to acknowledge young people's efforts in care.

Transit i samhällsvården: När unga utreds på särskilda ungdomshem2015Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about assessments of young people in secure accommodations. Institutional assessments relate to the paradox in child welfare of combining control and care. The procedure raises questions about their implications for young people, their caseworkers and evolving care trajectories. Although institutional assessments of young people have a historical heritage, research about their implications is lacking. The aim of the thesis is to explore young people’s and their caseworkers’ experiences of assessments in secure accommodations and their implications for young people’s care trajectories. Methods used are primarily repeated interviews with 16 young people during a period of two years and one interview with their caseworkers. Surveys about 85 youths, participatory observations and written assessments are also included. This thesis takes an interactionist approach and the material has been analysed with the main concept of care trajectory along with the concepts of self-presentation, total institution, institutional identity and texts as coordinators.

The results are presented in four papers. The concluding analysis shows that assessments in secure accommodations can be divided into three elements: the practice, the text and the placement. These three elements have different implications for the young people and the caseworkers. For the young people the practice and the placement converge into an assessment universe that, with the text, intensifies their shaping of self-identity. The young people’s experiences are characterised by lack of control over their self-presentations, the present and the future. For the caseworkers, the practice has implications for their understanding of the young people’s individual troubles, the text for negotiating with other actors and the placement in their efforts to achieve change in the young people’s troublesome situations. The assessments’ implications for stability and foreseeability in the young people’s further care trajectories are limited. Moreover, the procedure of assessing young people in itself contains instability through involving several professionals in different parts of the assessment and decision-making process. Despite lack of stability, the thesis reveals that some young people experience the assessment as a place for self-development and where the course of the care trajectory changes to the better.

Young people in limbo: perceptions of self-presentations when being assessed in secure accommodation2015Ingår i: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 22-37Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, young people are assessed in institutions at the request of the social services, a situation that can be described as being in limbo, in a state of uncertainty. Using the concepts of self-presentation and institutional processes in total institutions, this research aims to analyse young people’s perceptions of being assessed in secure accommodation. The empirical material consists of repeated interviews with 16 adolescents assessed in secure accommodation. Three situations were identified in which the young people felt that their self-presentations were in some way in or out of their control: the placement situation; the assessment situation and the assessment-outcome situation. The youths perceived their self-presentations to be influenced by the setting (i.e., the institution). In addition, there were two parts to being in limbo: being on site in the institution and being distant from the social services. The young people’s experience of being assessed in an institution was characterized by feelings of a loss of control over self-presentation and of their perceptions of themselves.

    Abstract [sv]

Searching for the right track: managing care trajectories in child welfare2017Ingår i: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 22, nr 1, s. 398-408Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines caseworkers' efforts to plan and find appropriate interventions for troublesome young people. Strauss's concept oftrajectory is applied to analyse how Swedish caseworkers shape and manage the evolving care trajectories using assessments for young people in secure accommodation, i.e. institutional youth assessments. The empirical material consists of surveys to 82 caseworkers concerning 85 institutional youth assessments and interviews with 16 of these caseworkers. The findings reveal ongoing care trajectories that are out of control where the assessments are seen as an opportunity of change for the youths. Diagnoses, confirmations and plans for action are provided through the assessments and used by the caseworkers in negotiations for resources. Three orientations of contributions to the caseworkers' management of care trajectories were found, all reflecting the many uncertainties of child welfare work:child centredprofessional and discharge of liability. In conclusion, the caseworkers searched for the right measures to manage change and achieve youth compliance, but it was also a matter of managing professional and organizational contingencies and passing on responsibility.
