Contextual image browsing in connection with music listening - matching music with specific images2007Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

This thesis discusses the possibility of combining music and images through the use of metadata. Test subjects from different usability tests say they are interested in seeing images of the band or artist they are listening too. Lyrics matching the actual song are also something they would like to see. As a result an application for cellphones is created with Flash Lite which shows that it is possible to listen to music and automatically get images from Flickr and lyrics from Lyrictracker which match the music and show them on a cellphone.

Who is left out?: Hidden Patterns of Birth Under-registration; A Case Study about Iran2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Universal full coverage of birth registration by 2030 is one of the sustainable development targets which itself is of great significance for the accomplishment of many development goals such as poverty eradication, inclusion, as well as improvement of several health factors. Despite the importance of this topic, not much academic attention has been paid to study the problem of birth under-registration from the perspective of development studies.

This research studies the issue of birth under-registration through a case study of Iran. The four main questions of this research are the quantitative significance of the problem, the main causes of birth under-registration, the most affected social groups, and the main problematic domain of action, in the context of Iran.

By utilizing an abductive content analysis method, this research aims to understand the problem, rather than proposing policy recommendations. This desk study uses secondary sources and almost all of the sources are of qualitative nature. It is not based on any pre-defined theory and therefore does not aim to generalize nor theorize the findings. It, however, is based on available theories for developing the analytical framework. The adopted analytical framework is Bottleneck analysis which is a method designed by UNICEF specifically for the purpose of birth registration programming and policy evaluation.

Birth under-registration in Iran - compared to other countries in the region - turned out to be very low. The findings provide information on many good practices regarding birth registration programming and also about several areas in need of improvement in Iran. By applying the analytical framework to the findings, identified disincentives have been categorized in three domains of supply, demand, and enabling environment, and the significance of disincentives in each domain has been assessed.

Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that almost all of the main causes of birth registration are of legal nature, especially patriarchal nationality laws. Also, it was found that the main risk groups were children of illegal immigrants, non-nationals, and unregistered parents, and the main problematic domain is found to be the domain of supply.

Transformativt ledarskap: - mer än summan av sina komponenter?2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A report on the Paris Climate Change Agreement and its implications for tourism: why we will always have Paris2016Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Tourism, ISSN 0966-9582, E-ISSN 1747-7646, Vol. 24, nr 7, s. 933-948Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT: Sustained international diplomatic efforts culminated in the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement by 196 countries in December 2015. This paper provides an overview of the key provisions of the agreement that are most relevant to the tourism sector: much strengthened and world-wide participation in greenhouse gas emission reduction ambitions, an enduring framework for increased ambitions over time, improved transparency in emissions reporting and a greater emphasis on climate risk management through adaptation. The declared carbon emission reduction ambitions of the tourism sector and international aviation are found to be broadly compatible with those of the Paris Agreement, however, claims of reduced emission intensity in the tourism sector since 2005 and a roadmap by which emission reduction ambitions for 2020 and 2035 might realistically be achieved both remain equivocal. The need for international tourism leadership to improve sectoral scale emission monitoring capacity to meet the increasing requirements for transparency, convene an assessment of risks from climate change and climate policy, foster greater collaboration on destination climate resilience and accelerate technological, policy and social innovation to put tourism firmly on a pathway to the low-carbon economy are all emphasized, as is the need for dialogue between tourism and tourism researchers.

Building agency through participatory video: Insights from the experiences of young women participants in India2017Ingår i: Gender, Technology and Development, ISSN 0971-8524, E-ISSN 0973-0656, Vol. 21, nr 3, s. 173-188Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Participatory video (PV) is being used by several nongovernment organizations (NGOs) in many different countries. It is often assumed to be a non-problematic process that enables less powerful groups to gain power and participate in social change. While scholars have for long critiqued participatory approaches, it is only in recent years that academic and professional debates that challenge assumptions about PV have emerged. This paper adds to those debates, while focusing primarily on critiquing the PV practice. Drawing on the concepts of participation, agency, and gender, it examines how the agency of less powerful groups can be affected over a period of time as they participate in PV projects initiated by NGOs. It discusses these issues through a case study of a long-term PV project done with young women in a community in Hyderabad (India), undertaken during a doctoral research. It draws attention to the several aspects of a long-term PV project that impact agency-development. The paper argues that while PV can enable participants to gain agency, it is equally challenging to do so in the presence of power relations.

Following the mainstream?: A case study on the women's organisation Kvinna till Kvinna and its potential shift in ideology2014Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

In the 1970s women started to be taken specifically into consideration when talking about development. Over time several approaches appeared where the focus varied from integrating women into existing structures in society (Women In Development (WID)) to changing the socially constructed gender roles (Gender And Development (GAD)). The latter was accepted by the international community in 1995.

In 1993 a Swedish organisation who called themselves Kvinna till Kvinna (KtK) was founded with the goal to help and support women in conflicted countries to become equal to the male population. An organisation that was founded almost simultaneously as the gender approach was accepted into the international community - which approach would they go for? Which approach seemed to be the best in order to achieve equality?

According to an ideology analysis of KtK's activity reports from 1994 to 2012, which was performed in this thesis, KtK seemed to have started out closer to the WID approach for a short time span, while rather quickly moving towards the GAD approach with which they have held on to date.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This study examines the conclusions made by Roland Paris in his case study of fourteen major post-war reconstruction efforts following the end of the Cold War, and applies them to the current reconstruction process in post-war Iraq. Paris found a common denominator of the fourteen cases – a belief that a rapid liberalization process, turning war-torn states into liberal market democracies, would foster sustainable peace. Paris calls this belief “Wilsonianism” after Woodrow Wilson, who was one of the first advocates of it. However, as it turned out this immediate liberalization generated a number of destabilizing side-effects, which endangered the very peace such policies were designed to strengthen.

Thus, the aim of this study is: to try whether the developments in Iraq after 1 May 2003 correspond with Paris’ conclusion from his study of peacebuilding operations during the 1990:s, that a rapid liberalization process endangers the very peace it is expected to bring about.

Even though I had some difficulties separating the involvement of the American-led coalition as an invading power as opposed to the power behind the liberalization process, I found Paris’ conclusion to be well in accordance with how the post-war reconstruction effort of Iraq has developed.

    Abstract [en]

1.1 billion people are today living without sustainable access to improved water. The debate over the water sector has been dominated by the discussion over whether public or private actors are the most competent to manage it. In this paper the arguments pro and contra the two positions are presented to try to overview the debate and to try to find new ways to approach the question of the people living without clean water. By examining possible alternatives towards the discussion of public and private actors, it might result in some new approaches on how to move closer towards a solution. One alternative is local, small- scale projects which focus on the situation of the targetgroup in most need. I have in this paper tried to find signs of that the debate is changing in a way that would bring positive outcomes for the people living without access to improved water. The debate is changing, both the private as well as the public sector is changing their ways of working and the alternative approach is increasing its influence. Hopefully the debate can move away from the discussion of ideology and acknowledge the strengths of each other to result in possible solutions of the water problems. With the increasing interest and concern for the question of water there is thus an opportunity for a change in the debate that would benefit the ones living without sustainable access to improved water.

Using PP GIS interviews to understand residents’ perspectiveof European ecological network Natura 20002017Ingår i: Tourism Geographies, ISSN 1461-6688, E-ISSN 1470-1340, Vol. 19, nr 5, s. 848-877Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainable nature-based tourism was brought to the public's attention as a solution to the problem of economic diversification in Central and Eastern European (CEE) communities included in European Ecological Network – N2000. However, Natura 2000 tourism development has not yet proven to be an effective way to boost local economies and the notion of sustainable tourism based on Natura 2000 resources has been challenged by residents of the CEE communities. The study goal was to explore issues concerning Natura 2000 tourism from the perspective of local residents within three municipalities of Małopolska in Poland to determine if Natura 2000 is perceived by local residents as a valuable tourism asset. We employed a mix-mode methodology: an in-depth interview and public participation GIS mapping task. The study results highlight several areas of concern regarding resident perspectives of Natura 2000-based tourism: first, the misconception that residents need and want nature-based tourism when other economic activities provide sufficient income; second, the misconception that Natura 2000 is considered a valuable asset when other tourism attractions in a municipality attract more visitors; third, the residents misconception of nature-based tourism itself; and last but not least the importance of engaging with residents when assessing the potential for Natura 2000 tourism. These findings can assist policy-makers and tourism managers with prioritizing avenues for further action.

Rwandan womens's role in decision-making on central, local and household level.2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Nine years after the genocide in Rwanda, women won 48 per cent of the seats in the parliament. In the next election of 2008 they became the most gender equal parliament in the world. But does this mean that women have received an extensive influence in decision-making in the Rwandan society? The aim with this study is to develop a deeper understanding of what role women have in decision-making at local political assemblies and in households. A field study with an ethnographical approach including interviews and observations in Rwanda was conducted in November-December 2011. Interviews with female and male farmers and urbanites were performed in order to understand their roles and responsibilities in their home. This thesis also contains a brief analysis of Rwandan women’s role in the pre-genocide society. Through a Neo-institutional approach, this thesis outlines what has contributed to women’s role today. Neo-institutionalism looks at societal changes with a holistic view and from three different aspects: the normative, cultural-cognitive and the regulative aspect. These three components of the theory are vital ingredients for a societal change to occur. My findings show that women participate in decision-making, not only on the central level, but also in local political assemblies. It also indicates that women of today partake in decision-making at the household level, earlier left to men alone. Women have also since 1999 gained equal rights by several legal regulations. My analysis shows that women’s influence in decision-making on central, local and on household level is a collateral consequence of the genocide.

    Abstract [en]

The beginning of this century has witnessed a growing interest in the immaterial resources of organization, and more particularly, in immaterial property as a source of future wealth, employment, and prosperity in economy. The discussion on creative economy has moved creative works from the fringes of economy – from the fields of cultural practices and media audiences – to one of the main areas of theorizing knowledge work, organising activity, and innovation. The user generated innovation of not only the content, but the organization of the production and the means for it, offers interesting points of departures to these developments. It also proposes challenges to the policy discussion on cultural and media production, the primacy of formal and professional organization for innovation on creative content and work, and the role of copyright and related rights ownership to the creation of wealth in the creative economy of the future.

Local NGOs’ Contribution to Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention in the Southern Region of Ukraine2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Since the end of the Cold War peacebuilding and conflict prevention became an important part of the international agenda in the processes of achieving peace. Nowadays there is an acknowledgment that civil society is an important actor that shares responsibility with the state, international actors, and contributes to rebuilding of states and societies after violent conflicts. However, there is a lack of contemporary research on the role and involvement of civil society in conflict prevention.

This abductive study is addressing a problem of the undiscovered potential of civil society’s role in conflict prevention.  The objective of the study is to contribute to a discussion on the importance of inclusion of civil society actors in peacebuilding and conflict prevention by investigating the contribution of local NGOs to sustainable peace in Ukraine. The Southern region of Ukraine serves as a case study in which primary data was gathered through qualitative semi-structured interviews with NGOs and donor representatives. The research objectives are reached through the analysis of the activities of local NGOs by applying an analytical framework for peacebuilding functions by Paffenholz and Spurk and then by interpreting the functions through a conflict prevention concept, using a toolbox for conflict prevention actions developed by SIPRI.

The results of the study based on the case of the Southern region of Ukraine demonstrate that the functions of civil society in peacebuilding, as outlined by the analytical framework, may not just be applied to the post-conflict stage of peacebuilding. In fact, they may be applied during different cycles of the conflict as part of the conflict prevention set of actions.

Local NGOs are contributing to conflict prevention and performing all seven peacebuilding functions as defined in the analytical framework. However, the main challenge is that these NGOs do not completely realize their role in peacebuilding and conflict prevention due to limited capacities and knowledge. That leads back to the problem of the undiscovered potential of civil society in conflict prevention. One possible solution, resulting from the suggestions of this study’s respondents, is the need for development of local knowledge and expertise in order to make the peace process sustainable.

Reconstructing the social fabric amid ongoing violence: attitudes toward reconciliation and structural transformation in Colombia2016Ingår i: Peacebuilding, ISSN 2164-7259, E-ISSN 2164-7267, Vol. 4, nr 1, s. 83-98Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Given the increase of reconciliation processes initiated amid ongoing violence, this study focuses on community reconciliation and its relation to structural transformation, or social reconstruction through reforming unjust institutions and practices that facilitate protracted violent conflict. Drawing lessons from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, mixed-methods analyses include 8 in-depth interviews and 184 surveys. Four key dimensions of reconciliation – truth, justice, mercy and peace – are examined. In the interviews, participants prioritise reconstructing the truth and bringing perpetrators to justice as essential aspects of reconciliation. Notions of mercy and forgiveness are less apparent. For the participants, sustainable peace is dependent on structural transformation to improve livelihoods. These data, however, do not indicate how this understanding of reconciliation may relate to individual participation in reconciliation processes. Complementing the qualitative data, quantitative analyses identify some broad patterns that relate to participation in reconciliation events. Compared to those who did not participate, individuals who engaged in reconciliation initiatives report higher levels of personal experience with violence, live alongside demobilised paramilitaries, are more engaged in civic life and express greater preference for structural transformation. The paper concludes with policy implications that integrate reconciliation and structural transformation to deepen efforts to rebuild the social fabric amid violence.

Christmas Tourists' Perceptions to Climate Change in Rovaniemi, Finland2013Ingår i: Tourism Geographies, ISSN 1461-6688, E-ISSN 1470-1340, Vol. 15, nr 2, s. 292-317Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland is the self-proclaimed official home of Santa Claus.' However, in recent years, after several warm and snowless season starts, Christmas tourism businesses have expressed concern about the future of the region's winter tourism industry. This paper examines the challenges of winter tourism operators to adapt to changing environmental conditions by surveying the responses of tourists to potential changes in winter conditions. In the light of climate change projections, maintaining the attractive image of a snow-covered winter wonderland may become impossible. Results indicate that tourists react negatively to estimated changes and planned adaptation mechanisms. This situation may force tourism entrepreneurs and destination managers to reconsider the consequences of current adaptation strategies and develop new attractions and marketing strategies in order to attract new markets and/or rebrand the destination.

Swedish tribalism and Tanzanian entrepreneurship: preconditions for trust formation2006Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, ISSN 0898-5626, E-ISSN 1464-5114, Vol. 18, nr 2, s. 91-107Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper sets out to explore the preconditions for trust formation using a comparative approach. It takes an empirical point of departure, in two longitudinal and ethnographically inspired studies in the differing contexts of Sweden and Tanzania. The comparison reveals many similarities between the contexts with regard to the influence of informal institutions, as well as the significance of categories in trust formation. Perhaps surprisingly, trust and co-operation are not as low as could be expected in Tanzania, given the inadequate formal institutional environment, but instead, the greater need for co-operation evoked entrepreneurial initiatives that enabled the creation of trust. While the Swedish small-business owners could afford their ‘tribalism’, Tanzanians created trust in an entrepreneurial way. The importance of interventions to understand the local institutional framework is highlighted and it is argued that arranging business training, or similar events, is a fruitful way to facilitate the trust creation process in development contexts.

People in motion, a historical perspective: A narrative about leaving and change2015Ingår i: Participation, Integration, and Recognition: Changing Pathways to immigrant Incorporation / [ed] Elli Heikkilä, Auvo Kostiainen, Johanna Leinonen, Ismo Söderling, Turku: Institute of Migration , 2015, s. 126-138Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to shed light on one immigrant’s experience of leaving and changes, of being forced to abandon the family home. Though decision to return and eventually did so, the informant later chose to leave again, reorienting towards new possibilities elsewhere. The informant related, in an oral interview, memories of the 1930s and 1940s; telling this story nearly seventy years after. Taking a life-story approach, I analyze this narrative of leaving and change, building on the idea that individually narrated memories can contribute knowledge and understanding to the field of immigrant studies. Experiences of insecurity and the search for a place where one feels safe and comfortable result from being forced to leave one’s home, all that is familiar, and from starting over. In this context, while the informant’s initial exodus was beyond control, later move to start over in a new country appears to reflect one’s own choice.

Gender Equality as ‘Political Indoctrination’: A case study on Brazil’s turn towards conservative university policies2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

‘Gender ideology’ is a term used by radical conservative congregations to contemn issues around gender, such as reproductive rights and gender studies, for it is seen as a conspiracy against traditional family values. Congregations that use the term also embrace other forms of anti-gender rhetoric as they aspire to influence decision-makers to adopt policies against gender matters, for instance same-sex marriages and transgender rights. As the discussion of ‘gender ideology’ is spread, campaigns against gender matters evolves. The campaigns are often focusing on whether gender should be discussed within, and be a part of, the education. It is a threat for the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, which indeed focus on gender equality and quality education. The campaigns are seen all over the world but have become especially successful within South America. In Brazil, the campaign Escola sem Partido, has created a movement against gender and political indoctrination, where the term gender has become a central dispute for what is considered legitimate knowledge.

This thesis aims to investigate, through a critical discourse analysis of ‘testimonies’ from Escola sem Partido’s website and through collecting interviews with professors and students at a university in Brazil, the conflict about gender equality. Since the term gender has become a central term of dispute within the discussion of ‘political indoctrination’ at a high level of education.

The result of this thesis shows that the perception of gender reflects the perception of one’s education. The view on what is experienced legitimate knowledge determines whether professors are experienced as political or not. It is found within the ‘testimonies’ that professors personal agenda steers the education to involve gender matters when it should not, as gender matters are viewed as political. Moreover, that professors use their classes to systematically instill ideas and attitudes into their students minds. In opposition to this perception, it was found within the interviews that gender matters should be addressed in school. Universities role of promoting tolerance, and the value of engaged professors who allows critical thinking of societal issues, are two important factors for fighting prejudices against minorities, gender and varieties of sexualities and development for gender equality.

Promoting Associations to Bring Development: The components of underdevelopment and the importance of associations to promote well-being2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies the case of the district of Ribáuè, in Northern Mozambique, to analyse the components of (under)development in the district. By analysing the different factors that influence the possibilities for growth, the paper assesses the importance of economic/social aspects and that of culture, setting a differentiation between administration-based hindrances and culture-based obstacles, and affirming that the gap between institutions and population can be fixed through the establishment of strong and trained associations of farmers. Taking a hermeneutic approach and with the help of the Deprivation Trap, theories on culture and development and the Alternative Development, the paper argues that issues like the access to credit and inputs have an influence much stronger than that of the resistance to change from the farmers, and that several beneficial components of culture could be exploited to produce adequate development. The text concludes with a recommendation for a change in the view upon development in Mozambique, arguing that there is a need for an integrative form of development that would bring farmers closer to the institutions and that would allow Mozambique to recover the control of its strategy.

Migrant fishers of Pemba: Drivers, impacts and mediating factors2016Ingår i: Marine Policy, ISSN 0308-597X, E-ISSN 1872-9460, Vol. 71, s. 242-255Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Most of the fishers of coastal East Africa particularly among the Bajuni, Kojani, Macua and Vezo ethnic communities have historically practiced migration. This study explores the strategies used by migrant fishers' of Pemba in the Western Indian Ocean region. By adopting a modified sustainable livelihoods framework (SLF), the study uses in-depth interviews and questionnaires to explore the life histories of the fishers in migrant communities, their motivations to migrate, and their associated socioeconomic and ecological implications. Results point out to a complexity of factors contributing to migration including natural, to economic and social factors. Interaction of such factors is instrumental in shaping fisher migration as an activity into an important livelihood strategy. The study concludes that SLF provides holistic understanding of migration. However the incorporation of the 'livelihood spaces' extends this knowledge by integrating the spectrum of spatial aspects. This understanding is critical in the design of policies and interventions necessary to ensure resource sustainability and secure fishers livelihoods. This multi-method approach is critical in empirical study of fisher migration.

    Abstract [en]

Over the last couple of years’ social media has come to have an influential role in our lives. With the broad use questions has raised if social media use can have negative effects. We have seen a recurrent tendency in media and society that encourage people to overlook their social media use and seen cases of people reducing their private social media use. The purpose of this study is to examine attitudes in young adults whom have taken a break from social media or reduced their usage. Furthermore, we wanted to distinguish what types of strategies they have used when they renounced from social media. With a qualitative approach we interviewed five young adults that had waived from social media during different periods of time due to negative usage experiences. We examined our empirical material along side with previous research on social media, Goffman’s impression management theory and Nanna Gillberg’s notion on Bourdieu’s forms of capital. We found that people tend to see the opportunity of impression control as something tedious and time consuming which had lead to a diminished use of social media. When tackle this aspect of social media, it came down to reducing your usage to an extent without having to compromise the possibility social media offers to keep in contact with friends.

    Abstract [en]

Trigger warnings as a concept is mainly a tool to make students aware of potentially triggering content in literature and has its origin in internet adaptions of psychological theories of posttraumatic stress disorder. The aim of this essay was to describe and analyse the argumentation in the public debate over trigger warnings in Sweden and to illustrate the fundamental questions relating to education that is highlighted by it. This was done through argumentation analysis and with theories of liberalism and identity politics as poles of a dimension of justice, illustrated by two different perspectives on disability pedagogy. The material chosen consisted of nine articles, radio programs and televised debates.

The results show a clear tendency for advocates of trigger warnings to lean towards identity politics and a critical perspective on disability pedagogy in their argumentation, while the critics firmly represented a liberal, universalist perspective along with a compensatory perspective on disability pedagogy in theirs. Three fundamental questions arose in the debate: first, safety in the realm of education, meant as void of feelings of being offended, was viewed as essential by the authors who were pro trigger warnings and as a threat to the sole purpose of education by those who were against it. Second, the importance of a diagnosis for disability pedagogy, where those against stressed the importance of a diagnosis, the lack of which in combination with a request for a trigger warning was viewed as being easily offended. Advocates on the other hand were uninterested in diagnoses. Finally, the relation between free speech and democratic values in the educational system and in the society as a whole, where those authors favouring trigger warnings tended to view free speech as less fundamental than those opposed, who instead saw trigger warnings as a threat.

CHANGE!: The Inter and Intra Dilemma of Arab/Islamic - West Relation : A Political and Socio-economic Integration Perspective2009Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to present a brief background about the Arab/Muslim – West conflicts and outline the strategy needed to achieve the Arab shared objective of cooperation and peaceful coexistence. It presents a theoretical, conceptual and empirical discourse based on recent developments in political and socio-economic spheres and relationship management theories.

The root cause of the remarkable Arab/Muslim countries’ dilemma can be traced back to two main dimensions: a regional dimension which is related to the inter-conflicts within the Arab/Muslim regions and an international dimension which is related to the endemic intra-Arab/Muslim – West conflicts. The overall cost of these conflicts is very high, since they cause political, social and economic instability, hinder the development, low foreign investment and slower rates of growth. The impact of the brutal inter and intra conflicts in the region is felt not only in terms of stunted economic growth, but also has broader social, economic and political ramifications across the Arab/Muslim countries and beyond. The current regional instability makes traditional models of and mechanisms of integration and development difficult but not impossible to pursue.

However, globalization of Western countries can cause more problem and crisis for the developing countries, if these countries are not able to compete or cooperate with developed countries. The existing economic blocs in Europe, USA, Asia, etc. create more unbalanced economic situation, which may increase the tension between the south and the north. These blocs would have an extremely prominent and powerful position as a guides and advisers in Arab countries, taking in the consideration the specific regional conditions such as culture, religion and social factors.

    Abstract [sv]

Ideal versus reality: Physicians perspectives on patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia2003Ingår i: Social Science and Medicine, ISSN 0277-9536, E-ISSN 1873-5347, Vol. 57, nr 4, s. 711-720Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Encountering patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or fibromyalgia can cause dilemmas for physicians due to the uncertainty inherent in these illnesses. The aim of this study was to investigate: (1) How physicians in a Swedish sample describe and categorise patients with CFS and fibromyalgia, (2) What the character of CFS and fibromyalgia, with regard to diagnosing, treatment and medical knowledge/aetiology, mean to the physicians in encounters with patients, and (3) Which strategies physicians describe that they use in the encounter with these patients. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 26 physicians, specialists in various fields who all had some experience of either CFS or fibromyalgia. The results suggest that there is a discrepancy between the ideal role of the physician and reality in the everyday work in interaction with these patients. This may lead to the professional role being questioned. Different strategies are developed to handle the encounters with these patients. The results also illuminate the physician's interpretations of patients in moralising terms. Conditions given the status of illness were regarded, for example, as less serious by the physicians than those with disease status. Scepticism was expressed regarding especially CFS, but also fibromyalgia. Moreover, it is shown how the patients are characterised by the physicians as ambitious, active, illness focused, demanding and medicalising. The patient groups in question do not always gain full access to the sick-role, in part as a consequence of the conditions not being defined as diseases. ⌐ 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Mapping via Time-Geography to Elucidate Institutional, Economic and Political Change2012Ingår i: Proceedings of 15th Uddevalla Symposium,2012, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Networks / [ed] Iréne Bernhard, Bohus: Ale Tryckteam , 2012, s. 1-10Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Change has always been an issue for studies in politics and economics. However, there are few systematic treatments of institutions. This paper exemplifies how institutions (i.e., rules, norms and conventions) relate to the time-geography concepts of constraints, which affect different agents, policy-making, as well as economic performance. This paper seeks to advance the current discussion and sets some groundwork for further elaboration on economic and political change from an ontological perspective based in time-geography. It offers an initial exploration of the analysis of institutional change by a conceptualization of constraints in time-geography.The contribution of this study lies in the fact that insights from a time-geography approach have the ability to make the evolutionary perspective more coherent in empirically-related works when grading and ordering institutions of relevance concerning economic and political evolvement.
