    ABSTRACT

Authors: Jasna Kadric and Maria Lazaridou

Title: It is like, as common as eating and sleeping... About how staff at grouphomes manages and looks at the sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities.

    Supervisor: Marie Eriksson

The following study is a phenomenological study based on interviews and a qualitative method, with seven respondents who work in different group homes. The purpose of this study is to understand how the staff at group homes manages and looks at the situations in which the sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities is expressed. The subjects of sexuality related to people with disabilities have often been lighted in relation to forced sterilization and birth rate. Therefore in this study we focused on sexuality as enjoyment and primary needs, as well as how the staff works and handles situations in which the sexuality of these people is expressed. We based the theoretical part on Elias & Scotsons theory of "Established and the Outsiders" and at the same time we also used four concepts in our analysis; normality, normalization principle, categorization and power. Therefore our conclusion is that the management of sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities is characterized by a quest for normalization principles. Sexuality of people with mental disabilities is perceived as normal by and not as a problem by the staff.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to understand how an elementary school interpreted and worked with the law Skollagen (SFS 2010:800) concerning special needs in school additionally in which way a neuropsychiatric diagnosis might interact with the interpretation. To answer the aim we used following research problems: How does the school define the term special needs and special resources itself? How does the school identify pupils with special needs and work with them? In which way does the neuropsychiatric diagnosis affect the interpretation of the law concerning special needs when it comes to deciding whether a pupil is in need of special recourses? Skollagen (SFS 2010:800) does not define special recourses and does not indicate how the school should use them. We were therefore interested in how an elementary school defined the term and decided to work with it. We based our study upon interviews with 6 respondents whom are central in the process of providing special resources for children in school. It’s these respondents interpretation of the law that eventually decide who the special recourses are given to and in which way. The results of the study was that the neuropsychiatric diagnosis itself had no affect concerning if special resources were given to a pupil, rather as an indicator of the pupils certain needs. The definition of special resources itself were connected to the way the school used the tools provided, for example listening to an audio book instead of reading. The school had different ways of identifying pupils with special needs amongst them were the usage of ‘screening’. A test all pupils do in order to determine who might need some extra help in school.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden the divorce rates has increased during the latter part of the 20

th century. For many children it’s everyday life growing up with parents no longer living together. The Parental Code states that "The child's best interests must be central to any decision in custody, residence and access." But what does the child’s best interest really mean and how do we investigate it? We decided to investigate its meaning by interviewing social workers regarding their interpretations of the child's best interests from a family law perspective. We also wanted to examine what they’re doing to protect the child's perspective in custody investigations. Our study is based on seven qualitative interviews with social workers dealing with family law matters. The interviews were based partly on our interview guide, but also on three fictitious cases that the social workers had to discuss and think about. Our theoretical starting point is based on Foucault's analysis of knowledge and power, Sannerstedt´s theory of implementation and Lipsky's theory of street – level bureaucrats and their discretion. Our study shows that social workers believe that the child's best interests are difficult to define and open to a variety of interpretations. Our results also shows that all social workers assume that the child's best interests shall be crucial to any decision concerning custody, residence and access, but illustrates the problem with the child's best interests are individualized for each child and is open to interpretation. It’s important to see from the child's point of view and trying to get acquainted with the child's situation. Research and experience are two important pieces which form the basis for the judgments they make.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines social workers' perceptions of their daily work with young people who abuse alcohol and drugs. The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers' perceptions are affected by gender and main drug of choice of activities for young people who abuse. Methodically the study was conducted with qualitative interviews with social workers active in youth substance abuse treatment. The study was carried out a review of previous research in relation to empirical data for the reason to have a discussion of possible explanations of social workers' perceptions and their daily work with young people who abuse alcohol and drugs. The results showed that social workers' perceptions of their daily work with young people are about attitude, reflection and development opportunities in the practical session with the youth. These factors were crucial in work with young people. Results also showed that social workers did not experience any difference due to gender in the daily work but that the choice of actions in the daily work was based on young people's problems and what substance the young people used.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to find out what relationship high school students have to social networks at the Internet. This has been done by focusing on norms/standards that adolescents can feel under stress to achieve, through stressing themselves by social networks in a way that is consistent with the norms. The empirical data has been gathered by questionnaires which have been answered by adolescents in randomly selected schools and classes in a medium size Swedish town, Karlskrona. The result showed that all of the participating adolescents have user accounts on a social network. Furthermore it also emerged that a lot of the adolescents thought that norms existed that should be followed in a social network about how to stress oneself. The norms were for example to write about things they are proud of, and to write in a way that is consistent to norms in the society. A few of the adolescents in the survey, said they experienced stress by living up to existing norms. However it is notable that a majority of the adolescents surveyed considered that other adolescents experienced stress for this reason.

The analysis in this study was made using the dramaturgical perspective of Erving Goffman and his perspective to stigma, and George Herbert Mead’s symbolic interactionism.

Finally a discussion of the findings of the study, the method used in the study and suggestions for further research are included.

A six year follow-up of a clinical sample of sexually offending adolescents. Exploring the outcome on health, sexuality, social adjustment, and sexual reoffending.2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Risk assessment protocols have been taken into practice during the last fifteen years. Further research is needed to validate the assessment practice. Some follow up studies have used solely data from registers as outcome variables. Individual follow up of clinical samples may contribute further to our knowledge.

Method: A sample of previously risk assessed males aged 12-18 years was used for this study. ERASOR (Worling & Curwen, 2001) was used to support the structured clinical assessments.

To explore outcome on health, sexual reoffending and social adjustment among assessed males, 78 young adults were invited to participate in the follow-up study, at least four years past assessment. Their mean age by assessment was 14.9 years (SD 1.6) and by follow-up 21.59 years (SD 2.4). Respondents were seen for a face-to-face interview and for completing six questionnaires.

Result: Thirty-nine males (50%) agreed to participate. As index-offence the majority sexually targeted children. Twelve young males were assessed being of high risk of sexual reoffending. The remaining 27 were assessed being of moderate or low risk.

One-fifth of the sample (n=8) had sexually reoffended by follow-up. Those who had sexually reoffended by follow up were significantly more likely by index offense to be assessed in high risk of sexual reoffending. Four of the suggested risk factors of ERASOR were significantly associated with sexual reoffending. The total of correct predictions was 62.0%. Those who sexually reoffended were significantly more likely to have learning disabilities, to self rate a risk of sexual reoffending by follow-up, and to report being a victim of sexual abuse than the non-reoffenders. The reoffenders vs non-reoffenders did not differ on the extent of received specialized treatment interventions.

Discussion: We examined the validity of using a structured risk assessment (ERASOR) and identified 62% correct predictions by follow up, which confirms previous promising results. Further learning disabilities emerged as a risk factor for sexual reoffending together with previously suggested risk factors. Those who sexually reoffended received specialized treatment to the same extent as non-reoffenders of the sample. The findings underline the importance of adjusted interventions for the group of young people with impairment.

Results on a number of variables will be presented and discussed as well as clinical implications.

    Abstract [en]

The Purpose of this study was to examine middle managers experiences of psychic and social work environment and how it affects the middle managers work. More exactly, we interviewed middle managers from the municipal elderly care in one of Kronoberg county municipalities. Middle managers work in a position in between politicians, organizations, clients and their relatives; staff groups etc. and they all have a lot of demands on them. The research shows that if the district chiefs’ psychic and social work environment is good, they have the condition to do a great job and help the clients to a better life. But if the work environment is bad and the district chiefs are unsatisfied it will affect many people as the clients, the staff and the organization.  The interviews were based on four different themes to gather the whole picture of the district chiefs’ psychic and social environment. We used three different theories along with our pre-understanding to analyze the five qualitative interviews: Demands and control model, KASAM and Strain and reward model. We interviewed four district chiefs and one union representative for SKTF. The study was too small to give any general conclusions but it showed that the district chiefs that we interviewed had a good psychic and social work environment and that it is very important for the health and happiness of themselves, the organization, the staff and the clients.

Splittrad i cannabisfrågan: - En kvantitativ studie över skolungdomars attityder till cannabis och syntetiska cannabinoider.2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The study show that the social climate around cannabis has moved toward a more permissive one, both in terms of recreational and medical use. Since the beginning of the 2000s, cannabis has also got complements in form of synthetic cannabinoids wich are structurally similar to the intoxicating cannabinoids that occurs naturally in cannabis. Several of the cannabinoids are legitimate wich make them easily accessible. Young people quickly captures and re-evaluates information and the aim of this study was to explore the attitudes to cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids among young people between 15-19 years. We has studied the sources of information that might influence their attitudes. The study has an quantitative approach and the empirical material was gathered through questionnaires which were distributed in classes at secondary schools and upper secondary schools. The results of this study show that adolescents who had not received any information about cannabis or synthetic cannabinoids doesn’t think they can take a stand regarding the hazardousness of the drug. We have found connections between their attitudes and the amount of information they received. Therefore it is important that young people receive information about drugs in order to form an opinion.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how the professional in social work handles the media scrutiny. When the media writes about social services there is seldom anything positive written about it, many social services organizations are instead heavily criticized and scrutinized by the media. When social services organizations are scrutinized by the media there is a crisis at work, and therefore should be handled as a crisis. Therefore, we describe how a crisis management might look like in an organization. The study is qualitative therefore we have interviewed four municipalities in Sweden that have been exposed by the media at a national level. We interviewed eight social workers and managers to get different opinions about the handling after media critic and scrutiny. We wanted to study how a social service handles the media when it been scrutinized, when the previous research only shows how social workers are affected by it. When the professionals in social services organization are scrutinized by the media there are frequently negative criticisms and that can lead to social services organizations legitimacy decreases. Therefor we will analyze our result from professional theory to see how the professional handles media scrutiny. We see similarities between a crisis and a media scrutiny and therefore we also use the concept of crisis. The results shows that it is important that colleagues support each other and that the professionals are open against media.  The differences between the positions are that managers are the ones who have the ultimate responsibility for the medial scrutiny. The responsibility includes media contact; to ensure that there is enough support, information regarding the situation given out to everyone in the workplace and taking into account the security.  To meet media in a better way is by have a media education there social workers and journalist can meet and exchanges knowledge and experience of each other works.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how evaluations are implemented and used in procured nursing homes for elderly. Our methodological approach consisted of a single-case study research. The case in this study was Växjö municipality. Three procured nursing homes for elderly were chosen in the municipality as examples of implementation and use of evaluation. The method for retrieving empirical data and the analyzing of it was based on triangulation. The empirical data was retrieved by semi-structured interviews with representatives from Växjö municipality and the suppliers. Empirical data was also retrieved from documents concerning the procurements and the evaluation process present in this study. The empirical data was analyzed on the basis of the neo-institutional theory and previous research that explain the implementation and use of evaluations. The result shows that evaluations are used as audit to control the suppliers and occur at three different levels in the municipality. The result also shows that the context and legitimacy of an organization affects the implementation and use of the evaluations. The result has made us question the use of evaluation at the overall level in view of the political debate at this level. The source of our doubts lies in that there are ideological differences in how politicians value procurement that may influence the use of evaluation. The ways the municipality implements and uses evaluations appear to be institutionalized.

    Abstract [en]

Mediation is a process in which various actors are involved with each other, this involvement is what the mediation are built on, because all the actors complement each other, they coordinate their work. This is not an interaction between various actors, it’s a participation. There is no research on this kind of participation, and therefore we believe that this is a scientific problem. The purpose of this paper is to implement an exploratory study of stakeholders views on the mediation process. The method we have chosen is a qualitative research with semi-structured interviews. Our result presents the stakeholders views about the mediation process based on different themes.

    Abstract [en]

Stress is part of everyday life and in the working conditions of the social services in Sweden. Thus each and every person has resources and strategies to cope with those stressors that construct the assumption of stress. The aim of this study was to understand how persons in leading positions of the LSS of Social Services in Kalmar experience and cope with stressors in their leadership and organization and to investigate what factors during working and non-working hours promote health. Influenced by the theoretical approach of Aaron Antonovsky´s Sense of Coherence seven qualitative interviews were conducted with persons in leading positions. They were asked about stressors, coping strategies, resources and health promoting factors that help to cope with stressors. The interviewees stated that stressors like unclear role description and heavy workload are among others a major part of the role as leader. They also stated that the role as a leader was more desirable than being a chief. Coping strategies were found to help control the daily stressors. Factors during working and non-working hours which promote health were found to be important as a factor to gain energy, relaxation and meaningfulness.

Our study aims at investigating the unit manager’s, within LSS, perceiveddiscretion, when people with Down´s syndrome develop Alzheimer’s disease. We wanted to know what they perceive as limiting factors or facilitators in order to meet changing and/or emerging needs, as well as how they interpret their discretion in relation to this. We have conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with five unit mangers within LSS.When analyzing the interview material, we have used a theoretical approach from a street-level bureaucracy and from the unit managers’ perceiveddiscretion point of view. Our study’s result demonstrate that the unit managers are experiencing a wide discretion and do not feel a need to widen their identifieddiscretion.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine which norms are applicable and how they are reproduced in two sports organisations. More specifically the aim was to find out how the leaders worked with gender roles and what message the organisations give out to young people. And at the same time, find out if there are similarities and differences between two different organisations, regarding norms and gender roles.  The study was based on observations and interviews. The observations were made during and after training in an ice hockey team and two gymnastic teams for girls nine to thirteen years old. The interviews were conducted with seven leaders and one senior ice-hockey player. The results have been presented and analyzed based on four key theoretical points, gender theory, gender stereotypes, the other sex, and deviate from the norm. The results showed the presence of existing gender norms and values. And both similarities and differences between the organisations. The leaders and the organisation's work with gender roles have also been presented as a part of the result. The results also show that the leaders and the organisations aren’t working with gender roles in sport.

    Abstract [en]

The intention of this qualitative study is to describe and analyse women's violence against men from the perspective of authorities and volunteer organisations. Data has been collected trough semi-structured interviews with six respondents stemming from the police, social services and a help organisation for men respectively. The data has been analysed using existing research and common theories about power, sex and gender. The study shows that IPV does not only contain physical violence, but also acts of psychological-, sexual-, economical-, material-, and latent violence as well as the fact that one act of violence almost never exists alone. It is shown that women more often use psychological abuse against their partner then men do and also that men tend to stay longer in an abusive relationship then women. The effects of the physical violence differs between  genders because men are generally bigger and stronger. When it comes to the psychological violence however, it appears that both men and women become affected in the same way. The respondents all say that they have no or little experience in meeting and treating men in this situation. They also have different views and opinions about how the funding is distributed between organisations that meet and help men as opposed to women in IPV relationships.

    Abstract [en]

With this research we aimed to seek how youth workers express their experience of counselling on the internet compared to traditional counselling face to face with a theoretical ground in semiotics and symbolic interactionism. Our questions were 1) How do youth workers describe their experiences from anonymous, faceless online counselling? 2) How do youth workers experience the differences between online counselling and the traditional face-to-face counselling? 3) Which possibilities and difficulties do they see in online communication with adolescents? We used semi-structed interviews with seven youth workers. Six of those are active in non-profit organisations, and one in social services. The results from our interviews showed that the interviewees saw that misunderstandings were more frequent on the internet, but that online counselling with adolescents still was easier than in the face-to-face meetings. To compensate for the non verbal part of communication in real life, symbols is seen as very important in online communication. The youth workers meant that the development of the on line counselling has opened a new arena. An arena where they get an opportunity to meet young people whom they don´t believe they would have met elsewhere. We found that this is a new, not fully developed culture with its own langue which we are about to learn. Once we understand and are capable of using this language new ways to meet with clients will be opened.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to look into the correctional system’s work with parent ship of incarcerated mothers and fathers from a gender perspective. It is a qualitative study and two interviews have been done with employees from a prison for women and one interview from a prison for men. Two interviews have been done with two former incarcerated parents, one mother and one father. One interview has also been done with an organization which gives children with incarcerated parents support and an opportunity to meet other children in the same situation. They also give incarcerated parents support in the contact with their children.

The results of the study imply that the correctional system has the same theoretical approach when working with incarcerated mothers and fathers. It is obvious that when it comes to attitudes and presumptions about parent ship, there are differences based on a gender perspective. This affects the practical work with parent ship within the correctional system. The results show that gender is always present in the discussion about parent ship within the correctional system even though the framework tells us different. This makes it even more important to be aware about how gender makes us look at parent ship depending on sex. Not least in the correctional system.

The purpose of this study was to understand school counselors´ and teachers´ perspectives on the prevention of bullying in relation to social capital. The study was based on a qualitative process with semi-structured interviews from three teachers and three school counselors from three different schools. The main question was to find out teachers and school counselors perspectives of bullying in relation to social capital. The analysis was based on a theory that focuses on social capital, where trust and confidence as well as universal and selective interventions are important. Today, bullying is considered a serious and significant problem in school. School and school climate can be an arena of social capital, where trust and confidence exists and where bullying can be seen as an undesirable social capital, as it can contribute cause to the trust and confidence between people reduce or destroyed. Therefore, it is important to find successful ways to prevent and stop bullying. The main conclusion in this research was that trust and confidence are important in the prevention of bullying in order to achieve a desirable social capital.

Author: Jessica Liljekvist and Emmelie Wiss CedergrenTitle: A miserable wretch that you should feel sorry for – If social workers see persons who prostitute themselves as victims or agents. [Translated title]Supervisor: Marie ErikssonAssessor: Anders Giertz

Our purpose with this study was to examine if social workers see persons who prostitute themselves as victims or as agents. We also wanted to examine how social workers see male and female persons who prostitute themselves. This study is based on the qualitative method and the result was analyzed with social constructionism, postmodern feminism and labeling theory. Eight social workers were interviewed in three different cities in Sweden. They were asked thematic questions about gender, victimization and agency and how their organizations and parliament affected their approach to prostitution. The results in the study showed that the majority of the social workers saw persons who prostitute themselves as traumatized victims. They pointed out that they had trouble seeing any agents in prostitution. Our results showed that they had a polarized approach to victimization and agency with different ratings. Trafficking victims had the highest grades of victimization. The lowest ratings were given to men and elderly persons who prostitute themselves. Men were seen as participants who got pleasure out of the prostitution. Women were exploited.

    Abstract [en]

Social work is a profession where documentation about people’s behavior and life circumstances is common. In the beginning of the essay we ask ourselves, if these descriptions about people can be problematic? To explore this, we studied social documentation, from the past. We used a historical source because history can help usunderstand the social work that is being conducted today. The aim of our study was to findout how early welfare work defined and described deviant behavior in child care issues, and how the child care agency handled these issues. Out method was a document analysis off the children’s care protocols in Kalmar, from 1929 to 1937. We present our results along with two illustrative case descriptions. Our theoretical approaches are Howard S Becker and Erwing Goffman´s theories of deviation. Their conclusion is that deviation is created by society, not by individuals or their actions. Since cases of children’s neglect and cases with deviant children were common and well documented we focused our empirical presentation on what was included in these terms. Children’s neglect cases focused on parent’s inability to provide the child with proper food, clothes, housing and similar factors. We also found that they made a distinction between mothers and fathers responsibility in these cases. Regarding the deviant children they also made a distinction between the sexes, identifying different behaviors deviant for girls andboys. Though some factors, such as being a illegitimate child and being unreliable is a definition used on both sexes. Since, according to our theories, deviation is created by our society our conclusion is that both children’s neglect and problem children can be seen as a result of societies expectations, and we present examples of how that can be understood in our analyze. In our final discussion we discuss how the definition of deviant behavior is relevant today. We discuss our findings in relation to BBIC, a Swedish child protection investigation guide. Our conclusion is that we still create deviations through documentation.

    Abstract [en]

This study discloses Swedish human service organizations and their methods of integrating unaccompanied children into the Swedish society. The purpose of the study is to investigate how social workers at HVB-homes for unaccompanied children depict their experience in and knowledge of how the unaccompanied children are integrated into Swedish society. The method of investigating the questions raised by the purpose of this thesis has been qualitative analysis of answers derived from interviewing personnel at HVB-homes for unaccompanied children. In doing so we have made use of a semi-structured method of interviewing the above-mentioned personnel. The data derived from these interviews has thereafter been analysed and filtered through the concept of integration and the theoretical formations human service organizations and street-level bureaucrats. A result shown in this thesis is that personnel at the HVB-homes strive towards integrating the unaccompanied children into society. The personnel has, however, experienced problems in describing the integration process, since they feel that they lack in understanding of the concept of integration. The HVB-homes have different methods of integrating the children and they feel confident in their approaches, as they perceive that the children are well integrated into society. The personnel describe numerous factors both promoting and obstructive, which affect each other and influence the integration of the unaccompanied children.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Prostitution has been intensely debated in Sweden for nearly four decades. Two major investigations have so far been initiated by the government and numerous propositions have been put forward in the Swedish parliament resulting in the sexköpslag from 1999 that criminalizes purchase of sexual services. The law aims at punishing the buyer and protecting the women in prostitution, thus making it possible for women to be helped by various social interventions rather than punished. Swedish society has undergone major changes in these decades. Globalization, the internet and the membership in the EU have changed the Swedish society and influenced the discourse on prostitution.

This paper has a twofold aim, on the one hand investigating if and how these changes have had an impact on the prostitution discourse in texts produced by the government and analyze how female and male sexuality in connection to prostitution is constructed. I have done so by analyzing texts spanning from 1981 to 1998. Texts produced by the government have a direct impact on the community in terms of defining what is legal and what is not, but also have a normative function and a direct impact on social work and in the end, the wellbeing of individuals. I therefore argue that it is of importance to critically analyze and question these texts.

My conclusion is that cultural and social construction and stratification of perceived deviant sexuality in the form of prostitution in the period I studied has on the one hand undergone a profound change focusing on female prostitutes as both the root of a problem and its victims, and the other hand further cementing existing gender patterns prevalent in Swedish society for centuries.

Consumer research on tweens: putting the pieces together2011Ingår i: Young Consumers: Insight and Ideas for Responsible Marketers, ISSN 1747-3616, Vol. 12, nr 4, s. 326-336Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to critically review Scandinavian research on tweens as consumers from the years 1990-2007.

Design/methodology/approach – In total, 35 studies were examined. Bronfenbrenner's bio-ecological perspective was used to depict what parts of children's lives had been investigated. The theory highlights different contexts and analytical levels in children's environments that may influence their consumer behavior.

Findings – Scandinavian research has mainly focused on the individual child as a consumer and on interpersonal relations. The societal transformations that gradually changes the Scandinavian countries seem to have been less investigated. In addition, there is a lack of Scandinavian consumer research on interaction between different contexts, such as parents and school, which may influence children's consumer behavior.

Research limitations/implications – This article has not critically reviewed each specific investigation in the field, but focused on the spread of aggregated Scandinavian research on tweens as consumers.

Practical implications – A more composite picture of consumption patterns among Scandinavian tweens is provided, which may be used as a guideline for educators, marketers and other professionals that interact with this age group.

Originality/value – Few attempts have been made to obtain a composite picture of Scandinavian consumer research on tweens. This question is of particular importance in times when the discourse of children's role in consumer society is changing, in order to understand the implications for future theoretical and empirical development in this dynamic field.

    Abstract [sv]

“If you have money, you can be kinder to them”: Possessions and economic resources in children's peer groups2012Ingår i: Young Consumers: Insight and Ideas for Responsible Marketers, ISSN 1747-3616, Vol. 13, nr 2, s. 136-146Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the functions of material possessions and economic resources in peer relationships among third grade children.

Design/methodology/approach – In total, 48 Swedish children aged nine were interviewed in focus groups, using a projective vignette technique and pictures. The children were asked if and how children in general could gain new friends through material possessions and money.

Findings – The findings indicate that children perceive possessions as multi-functional tools in peer relationships. The ability to fit into the peer group, by the use of different possessions, was perceived as especially important. Additionally, children perceived money as an altruistic tool to demonstrate kindness.

Research limitations/implications – This is a qualitative study and the results are based solely on ten focus groups.

Practical implications – This study implies that children's ability to fit into the peer group seems to be more important than the need to express individuality. Thus, it may be a challenge for social marketers, teachers, parents, and others to address children's consumption behavior as a factor strongly influenced by the peer group.

Originality/value – Previous research indicated that material possessions were important for children in order to gain popularity among peers. However, few studies have tried to investigate how children perceive the functions of material possessions and economic resources.

Kompisar är gratis men... Konsumtionens betydelse för barns relationer med jämnåriga. Paper presenterat på Kultursociologisk konferens 20-21/9 2010, Linnéuniversitetet2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Tweens as Consumers in the Nordic Countries: Putting the Pieces Together2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Tweens, children between 7-12 years old, is a relative new focus in the expanding field of consumer research in the Nordic countries. The relation between consumption and tweens has been studied extensively during the past ten years. However, depending on method and focus, every study has its own limitations: research necessarily involves keeping within reasonable bounds in order to gain specific knowledge. Consequently, earlier research has been studying different pieces in the complex area that constitutes tweens in relation to consumption. This article aims to put the pieces together in order to gain a more composite picture of the area: focus is on consumption patterns among Nordic tweens. Earlier research from various disciplines was collected trough (1) databases, (2) reference lists in books and articles and (3) contact with researchers. The sample was composed of 50 Nordic studies, from 1990 to 2007. By putting the pieces together it is clear that tweens and consumption is a complex area; and that consumption, to a high degree, intertwines with everyday life for children.

    Abstract [en]

Collaboration is a tool many organizations use to achive a certain goal. In previous research it can be read about both advantages and disadvantages of collaboration and also that a well-functioning collaboration is difficult to achieve. In previous research there is a shortage of scientific researches illustrating the outcome of collaboration. I have chosen to examine the cooperation between the social services and schools of the municipality of Växjö. The purpose of this essay is to understand what experiences staff working with children/young people in school and social services have of collaboration between each others organizations. And what they think about the importance of collaboration for the pupil/client. I have used a qualitative method and carried out individual interviews as well as focus group interviews. Altogether I accomplished two individual interviews and two focus group interviews. In order to analyze my empiricism I have used Kvale's (1997) process of interpretation and applied the new institutional theory of organization. As the theory is extensive I have chosen to focus on certain parts which are: organizational fields, business domain, consensus domain and conflict domain. In my analysis I have come to the conclusion that informants in school and people in social services have different views on the collaboration in between them. Their experiences are however that an effective interaction leads to positive effects for both the child/the young and for the professionals themselves. Today however they experience that the cooperation between the organizations has a lack of common goals and expectations.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how heads of unit in charge of personal assistance (PA)for the disabled experience and handle ethical dilemmas and situations within theirworkgroups when The Work Environment Act and The Swedish Act Concerning Support andService for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments collide with each other. The methodof the study was to use semi-structured interviews based around three main topics; the head ofunits opinions about the value and purpose of The Work Environment Act in theadministering and implementation of personal assistance services, the problem solvingprocess and the head of units own individual experiences of ethical dilemmas or workenvironment-related conflicts or situations within their workgroups. Four heads of unit wereinterviewed for this study. The results of this study showed that the interviewed heads of unitexperienced a lack of clear and factual information about how they were meant to solvedilemmas emerging from the two laws conflicting with each other regarding the rights of thecare recipient to layout their personal assistance to their liking, versus the rights of thepersonal assistant to have acceptable working conditions. The heads of unit could not rely onlegislation and/or other specific directive documents when work environment-relatedproblems arose. There is a strong emphasis on the care recipient’s rights both within thelegislation and throughout the different fields of social work in general, which makes it harderfor the personal assistant to claim their rights. Both The Swedish Act Concerning Support andService for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments and the PA-profession is relativelynew in Sweden and has yet to be adequately explored and discussed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to highlight LGBT asylum-seekers experiences of expressing their sexual identity or gender identity in the country of origin and in the asylum process in Sweden. By interviewing people who got permanent residence in Sweden because of gender or sexual orientation in Utlänningslagen (2005:716) we have been able to explore their own experiences from expressing themselves. This study analyse these experiences from a social psychological perspective, from this analysis we aimed to obtain a deeper understanding of how the experiences from the country of origin affects on the experiences in the asylum process. This study shows that LGBT asylum-seekers often is facing negative reactions from the environment in the country of origin, these reactions can limit their possibilities to express their sexual identity or gender identity in the asylum process in Sweden. The negative reactions they experience in the country of origin have contributed to that many LGBT people internalize feelings of fear to express themselves, feelings that often stays when they come to Sweden to seek asylum. We hope that this study will contribute to a better treatment and reception from social workers and other professionals who meet these people in their work, by increased knowledge of the conditions under which LGBT people are coming to seek asylum in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

The background of this paper is the dual role that the social worker can have, of beeing both supportive and controlling in the meeting with clients. It is also about the power the social worker can have, how they handle the power in their profession and how they remain to it in the relationship with the client. The study is qualitative and built on interviews with eight social workers that work in different areas in the social services. We have chosen to see this dual role as if the social workers have to, in their daily work, handle the roles as one authority role and one supportive role towards the client.

The purpose of this study is to understand how the dual role as the social worker has in the profession, as a helper and a authority, is expressed in the work and relationship with the client. We have turned this purpose into two questions: How do social workers with authority remain to the dual roles of the profession? How do the social workers describe and understand power?

We don´t want to generalize in this study, we want to give an example of the social workers own experiences about the dual role. Our theoretical point of view is the pastoral power, street-level bureaucracy and human service organizations. We have also been using earlier research. The analyze and result is presented together, split into five themes. The result shows that the social workers does not see the roles as two different, they see it as one intertwined. The results also show that the social workers see power only when they take decisions that are negative for the clients.

We finish of the paper with a discussion about our reflections on the results and some thoughts on how to proceed with research in this subject.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine self-harming women’s own experiences. To try and raise understanding and awareness about how they themselves create their identity and meaning round the self-harming behaviour. Our three questions were; how do the young women conceive society’s reactions on their self-harming behaviour? Do the young women express an imposed or self-elected alienation? If so, in what way? In what way do the young self-harming women construe their own identity in relation to the self-harming behaviour?

We have used a narrative approach when we have examined the blogs as life stories in the sense that all our lives and everything in them is a story by definition. We have examined the parts of the blogs we selected as whole units to begin with, we separated the different parts from each other first when we were familiar with the material. The analysis then had an interpersonal aim to find out the function and relation in what was written. That does not exclude the use of both form analysis or the analysis of content with we also have used side by side throughout our analysis.

Our results show that this subject matter has several layers and so is a complex area that would benefit from more research with the young women´s perspective at hand. The young women describe several interesting interpretations on how their society comprehends them. They often feel judged and have to struggle with deciding if and when to show who they really are, both in regards to their bodies and inner self’s. This stigmatisation is apparent throughout all of our material. The young women also express that they feel forced into roles that they on the one hand have chosen but on the other hand don’t want to stay in. The women also express a desire to belong in the normal society like an equal. In addition the women express that they construct their identity both within themselves to make sense of their chaotic emotions, but they also experience that their society is a big part in their identity making process. Society’s expectations on them force them to take one of a few available routes in their identity making. In our results a few of these are visible the two most apparent is a dichotomy between victim and antagonist, these two positions don’t appear separately but is often visible in the same segments of the texts.

    Abstract [sv]

    I Resultaten framkom bland annat:

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on the public eldercare assistances administrators and unit managers perspective. The purpose of this study is to describe and understand how the assistance administrator and unit manager approach elderly needs, who can be harder to accommodate as well as alternative providers that also can meet the needs of the elderly. It is important to gain more knowledge about how assistance administrators and unit managers look at these aspects, what their attitude and approach is towards them. This is important to learn more about because the assistance administrators and unit managers have discretion in their work and the power to change and affect the elderlys situation in a significant way. They decide on actions and design implementation to meet the needs of the elderly and enable them a reasonable standard of living.

The choice of method used in this study was qualitative through semi-structured interviews, conducted with assistance officers and unit managers. The theoretical analyse was conducted by using Lipsky 's theory of street-level bureaucracy and Berglind theory of conduct. The results of our study indicate that the professionals have discretion that they can use in their work, that they have a empathic approach toward their work and that social needs can be more difficult to meet.

    Abstract [en]

This study is of a qualitative phenomenological approach. Its background lies in recent reports that show the problem of self-harm increasing among adolescents. The intent of the study was to highlight school counselors’ view of self-harm, and their experiences of meeting self-harm through their work. Six school counselors, all employed in secondary school, have participated in semi-structured interviews. Data from these interviews have been categorized into themes named Girl Cutters, Waves, Meeting Self-harm, and Responsibility. These where analyzed according to a social constructionist approach and have been compared to previously known research. Results show that several of the school counselors defined self-harm as girls who cut themselves. It is also described that self-harm occurs in time-periods for groups of pupils, described as waves. A number of school counselors divided girls who self-harm in to two categories, depending on how severe it is considered to be. Several of the school counselors described that school take on a high responsibility for mental health among adolescents, more then they are legally responsible for. School counselors described signals for development of self-harm problems as over all changes in the pupils general behavior.
