    Abstract [sv]

Holmön, situated in the county of Västerbotten, consists of several islands in the Gulf of Bothnia. At the end of the year 1973 these islands only had 155 citizens. However, in spite of the small population size, these islands formed an independent municipality between 1925 and 1973, making it the smallest one in Sweden.

This study deals with democracy and politics at the municipal level at Holmön, and the aim is to investigate the extent to which small political unites, such as Holmön, can manage the welfare duties imposed on all municipalities by national legislation.

The main group of elected officials at Holmön were composed of a small assembly of dominant men. Only very few women participated, and the limited involvement of women were restricted to committees dealing with issues solely related to social life and schooling. The general political activity of the Holmön municipality was restricted to duties made compulsory

by national legislation, and even though the municipality had a weak economy taxes were kept at low levels. Politics in the municipality was indeed characterized by economic thriftiness.

In the study, Holmön is furthermore compared with other small municipalities, in Sweden as well in other Western European countries. Several of these countries – e.g. Finland, Norway and Iceland – to this day have municipalities with population sizes as small as Holmön.

Historians and Their Sources: The use of unpublished source material in Swedish doctoral theses in history, 1959-2015, and in student bachelor's and master's theses, 2010-20152018In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 43, no 3, p. 365-386Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study analyses the development of the use of unpublished source material in Swedish doctoral theses in history, 1959–2015. The results show that the proportion of theses which rely on such materials has dropped in relation to the level that existed up to and including the year 2007. From having dropped below 90% only twice during the time period 1959–2007, the average for the years 2008–2015 is 77%. There are several explanations as to why this decline in use of unpublished source material has occurred. An initial explanation is that more doctoral theses are now published within the subdiscipline of historical science, in which, for example, history didactics and uses of history are included. History didactics and uses of history have gained more ground within the overall field of historical research during the last 10 years. The next-to-lowest figures are found in the category history of ideas, culture, and opinion history; a category which during the time period 2008–2015 remained at a fairly constant share of the total number of doctoral defences in history in Sweden in relation to the situation at the beginning of the 2000s.

Portrait of a villain: Laban the Aramean in rabbinic literature2001Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study attempts to answer the question of why Laban the Aramean, a rather harmless character as presented in the biblical text, is generally portrayed in rabbinic literature as a major enemy of Jacob and Israel. It is argued that the portrait of Laban as a villain developed as a result of rabbinic hermeneutics, and that the characteristics which are attributed to him in rabbinic literature were not arbitrarily chosen due to a particular interest in his person or a wish to endow him with a certain set of negative characteristics, but rather derive from interaction between the rabbis and the biblical text in a process where the rabbis filled in the gaps that they perceived in the biblical text and explained inconsistencies with material provided by the Bible itself and by material taken from their ideological code. The study suggests that a portrait of a villain can develop as a result of hermeneutics without that portrait necessarily being inspired by a historical enemy. It also indicates that an image of an enemy can develop primarily as a side-effect of concerns other than an interest in the villain himself, observations which draw attention to the role that exegesis of the Bible played in the formation of the opinions and world view of the rabbis as well as the inseparability of exegesis and ideology. The four main chapters of the book include respectively (1) a brief survey of Laban the Aramean in the Bible and pre-rabbinic literature, (2) the rabbinic interpretations of Deut 26:5 and the role that these have played in the development of the image of Laban as wicked, (3) a survey of the narrative expansions on Laban within the Jacob-Laban story as rendered by the midrashic compilations on Genesis, (4) a narrative analysis of the Jacob-Laban story in Targum Pseudo-Jonathan and the presentation of Laban in the remaining targumim on the Pentateuch.

    Abstract [en]

The workobligations and the form of salary for the workers at Johannishus estate is the main objective of this essay. Knowledge about those subjects was obtained through the use of source material from Johannishus estates private archive. Description of the estate and its owners is included to give a perspective of the place of employment and the employer. A personal description of the lives for the three most prominent working klasses is included through material written by a woman formely employed at Johannishus. The workers was not susceptible for moving which gives an inclination that they were treated well. Between the years that has been a part of this reserch the amount of daylabor that the workers were obliged to do does not differ in any evident way. Only the later year have a smaller distribution because of the workhour laws that changed some of the conditions of the worker. Many of these workers were paid in provisions and other necessities rather than a salary consisting of money.

Blästbrukslämningar i Brånahult: aArkeologisk förundersökning av RAÄ 332 med flera lämningar 2008 : Brånahult 1:8, Madesjö socken, Nybro kommun, Småland2009Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This report presents the results from an archaeological trial excavation carried out in December 2008 at Brånahult, parish of Madesjö, Småland, southeast Sweden. The investigation was caused by plans of expanding a stone quarry into an area with previously recorded bloomery remains, RAÄ 332. A trial excavation performed in september 2008 just to the northeast of the present investigation area aimed at delimiting the bloomery remains towards the northeast. The exploitation plans have changed since the first trial excavation, and thus the aim of the present trial excavation was to delimit and establish the chronology, state of preservation, content and scientific potential of the bloomery and possibly other remains within an area of around 40 000 m2 to the south and west of the bloomery RAÄ 332. The investigation managed to clearly delimit the previously recorded bloomery site, and also to locate another similar but smaller bloomery site less than 100 m from the first one. Apart from these, two charcoal production sites, a stone quarry site, three clearance cairns and another heap of slag some 100-150 m to the northwest of the bloomery sites were found. Within the bloomery sites several well preserved stone constructions were identified. Samples of slag were ocularily analysed, and the results suggest that iron production on the site has been quite extensive. Three 14C-dated place the activities in the Middle Ages, around AD 1280-1460. Based on the results of the trial excavation, Kalmar County Museum suggests that any exploitation of the area should be pre- ceeded by an archaeological excavation of the two bloomery sites. Decision in this matter is taken by the County Administrative Board in Kalmar.

    Abstract [en]

On January 1, 2014 a legislative amendment to the former National Heritage Act (1988: 950) was put in action, one of the new amendments that was conceived in what is now called Culture Environmental Act (1988: 950). The change made it possible for the County Councils to enforce that the results associated with archaeological research would be conveyed to the public.

The present work is a case study aiming to see what kind of impact this amendment has had on the archaeological specifications and offer invitations for archaeological investigations.

The main questions for the work are:

    • What kind of mediation is being required by the County Councils?
    • Why was the law changed?
    • Is there a difference in this respect between different counties?
    • Has there been any noticable change in practice in this respect after the amendment introduction?

This study aims to answer these questions and throughout it also give you as a reader information about the history behind the changes as well as what impact the changes has had on archaeological investigations and the mediated results to the public. The aim is also to show the different ways that archaelogy is communicated and to whom.

Ett bruk i förfall: En studie av relationerna mellan Huseby bruk och dess lokala fackföreningar under nedgångsperioden 1947-19572017Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Huseby bruk was a large isolated industry that bloomed during the 19th century and was located in the county of Småland, Sweden. It was a large industry focused on many different areas and in large it was self-sufficient. Like many other industries at the time Huseby bruk was lead by a patriarchal leader named Joseph Stephens who died in 1934. At this time many Swedish industries were in decline due to modernization and labour unions on the rise. The first local union on Huseby bruk officially started in 1947. After Joseph Stephens death the oldest daughter Florence Stephens took over the industry and lead it until 1957. The main focus of this study has been to look at the relations between the local labour unions and the managing directors during the period 1947-1957. Further the study has aimed to look at how conflicts between the unions and the managers were handled and if the unions were conscious of the downturn period that the industry was experiencing. Finally the study has looked at how the local labour unions interacted with other unions. The results of the study has shown that the patriarchal relations between worker and manager had ceased to exist. Instead the workers depended more upon the larger unions. The conflicts had an hierarchic order where the local union first tried to solve the conflict themselves before seeking help from larger unions. The local unions were conscious of the downturn period from which I have drawn the conclusion that the unions had a increased understanding for the conflicts they had with Huseby bruk.

    Abstract [sv]

Försvaret i skolan: En studie om total- och civilförsvarundervisning i skolan under 70-talets kallakrigsår.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to illustrate the preparation of total and civil defense education in schools in the 1970s to gain insight into how the school looked and pondered the complicated world that existed outside the school's doors. By using the concepts of welfare state, welfare and civil defense culture, I have studied relevant materials to get answers to questions treating the total and civil education in schools after Lgr69, the way the state sees the subject and if it is possible to detect a civil defense culture in schools and if so, how it will be expressed.     The results show that the state emphasized education as incredibly important because knowledge of how to act in a crisis or war could be extremely crucial for the individuals and their survival. The education was so important that it got a role as a main factor in Lgr69. But even if the education was important the teachers had huge problems with the schedule and many teachers couldn´t educate all facts because they didn´t have enough time. To deal with the problem many schools learn about total and civil defense on outdoors days or sports days. The students were generally in favor of the subject but some thought it was too much fact to learn in so little time.    The question about the civil defense in school is a question that doesn´t have an obvious answer but can be seen from different perspectives. Since the total and civil defense education was a main factor in Lgr69 it appears obvious that there was a civil defense culture and the constant threat of war led to a way of thinking and acting, even in school. One purpose of the education was to see the total and civil defense as a social function in a larger context, and that goal could be related to the country's goal to build a successful welfare society that would be characterized by security - economically, politically and socially.     Another factor that points to the existence of a civil defense culture was the opportunity for the students to practice on different parts of civil defense such as self protection and accident care. The idea of a non-existent civil defense culture in schools existed because the obvious time constraints and, to some extent, nonchalance that existed among the Swedish population. Furthermore, the non-existent idea strengthens when Lgr69 itself (and even other textbooks) emphasize that all parts of the total and civil education didn´t need to be examined, it depended on the time that was available.

    Abstract [en]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]
