    Abstract [en]

    Interacting with objects in a virtual reality environment is commonly performed with either hand held physical controllers or by using optical devices to track the orientation and posture of the user’s hands. Recent research finds that physical controllers often are preferred due to lack of accuracy of the hand tracking technology. As the Virtual Reality (VR) industry is constantly evolving, new improved solutions for hand tracking are developed and shipped with head mounted displays (HMD) at consumer level prices. Continuous research is needed in order to evaluate and refine recent findings within the field of interaction in virtual environments. New technologies that offer better tracking accuracy may very well address earlier findings where accuracy often was the reason for preferring physical controllers over hand tracking. 

    This research project conducts a user study aiming to investigate and compare handheld controllers to hand tracking for object interaction in virtual reality in the context of a VR application developed for Oculus Quest, currently the most sold Virtual Reality headset on the consumer market. Participants are exposed to three tasks in a virtual reality application involving activities related to object interaction. The findings are similar to recent research. The original handheld controllers for the Oculus Quest 1 & 2 are preferred in terms of user experience and allow the users to be more efficient and accurate in the context of the VR application developed for this thesis project.

    Abstract [en]

    The use of digital tools such as smartphones, tablets and laptops have shown potential to enhance teaching and learning in a wide variety of contexts. 21st century skills such as creativity, problem-solving and innovation as means for supporting learning and knowledge creation, are considered fundamental proficiencies in today's technology- driven society, and they are therefore considered essential to promote, already from the earliest of school years. Hence, there are a number of challenges related to how to design and implement innovative and varied strategies

    for teaching and learning supported by mobile technologies in educational settings. Moreover, it is also crucial to think about how to actively involve teachers into the processes mentioned above, inspiring and inviting them to implement new methods and technologies into their everyday educational practices.

    The work presented in this thesis embodies a series of co-design and design-based research efforts aiming at exploring the interplay between design, information and communication technologies and learning through mobile digital storytelling, guided by the theoretical frameworks of constructivism, multimodality, new media literacies, mobile seamless learning, and technology enhanced learning. Two main research questions have been identified as formulated below, and have served as

    the basis that guided my efforts:

    What design features are necessary to scaffold mobile seamless learning approaches with the support of mobile digital storytelling?

    Considering the role of mobile digital storytelling for educational settings: which design factors and learning requirements could guide and support similar initiatives?

    Over the years of my doctoral studies, a progression of research interventions involving teachers, pupils, and museum staff have been co-designed, developed, tested and validated. These efforts have resulted in a method, a mobile application, and a web service for mobile digital storytelling in educational contexts, named the mobile digital storytelling (mDS) system.

    The mDS system introduces learning technology approaches aiming to support teacher and pupil digital inclusion, mobile seamless learning and multimodal aspects, and serves as a reflective instrument for both collaborative and individual work. The validation of mDS in different educational settings indicates that it can be independent of subject matter, user age, locality and previous knowledge of technology enhanced learning, and is easy to access and manage for teachers as well as pupils. Hence, it proposes several innovative means on multiple levels for meeting the 21st century skills required for supporting contemporary learning and knowledge creation.

    The present study describes our on-going efforts aiming at refining and validating a Mobile Seamless Learning (MSL) approach supported by mobile Digital Storytelling (mDS). Considering learning factors of locality, formality and time, as well as elements of designs for learning and technical development, we have chosen six dimensions of the MSL framework (Wong and Looi 2011) to support our work. Guided by the principles of co-design (Spikol et al. 2009) and design-based research (Design-Based Research Collective, 2003; Ejersbo et al. 2008), we collaborated with 4 teachers and 54 pupils, devoting an extensive amount of time to design, develop and enact the phases of our proposed mDS workflow supported by mobile and web technologies. Beyond the mobile application developed for mDS, we have developed and integrated web solutions that support the overall learning experience, and tools that allow teachers to orchestrate the activities. The mDS web serve as a platform for continued work over time, such as reflecting, remixing, and reusing the digital content generated during the activities. The web platform provides means for teachers to search, watch, group, and assess the pupils’ mDS outcomes, and therefore serves as the interconnecting glue between all the learning activities involved in the mDS workflow. This study reports on the activities conducted in four classrooms in the spring of 2015, working with the five phases of the mDS approach. The outcomes of our efforts reinforced the importance of an active involvement by teachers to adopt and incorporate innovative technology enhanced learning (TEL) activities and solutions into their everyday educational practices, but most importantly on the need for schools to acquire self-governance on how to make use of their learning technologies.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents our on-going research efforts related to the use of mobile digital storytelling to support alternative ways of learning about cultural heritage. In a joint effort to promote creative collaborative learning we are working together with a local museum and an elementary school on actively engaging a group of Swedish school children in mobile digital storytelling. Divided into eight groups of three children each, the pupils took on specific roles and areas of responsibility concerning the collection of story data, such as photographs, script and sound. Before venturing into the final processing and producing of the stories, each group had to negotiate their collected data and agree on what to use for and in their story. That decision had to reflect the opinions and choices for the whole group. The outcomes of these efforts provided us with valuable insights on how mobile digital storytelling can be used in authentic contexts to support creative collaborative learning.

    This paper presents our current efforts towards finalizing a complete workflow for mobile digital storytelling (mDS) supporting the concept of mobile seamless learning (MSL) in educational settings. Our purpose with the present study was twofold: to initiate the incorporation of complementary software solutions concordant with the mDS workflow proposed in this paper, and to try to consolidate the sustainability of technology enhanced learning efforts like these by encouraging the participating teachers to implement ideas, inspiration and routines from the mDS workflow into their everyday educational practices. However, even though the study outcomes from the pupil activity were rewarding for all stakeholders, exposing intensified motivational boost and dedication among the pupils, we still recognize a challenge in how to motivate and inspire teachers to dare launch and implement future similar efforts on their own.

    Abstract [en]

    This chapter describes our efforts toward finalizing an all-embracing workflow for a mobile seamless learning approach supporting mobile digital storytelling (mDS) for educational purposes. Considering the factors of locality, formality and time as well as the design of the activity and assignments, we have chosen five dimensions of the mobile seamless learning framework to guide our work. In addition to the main mobile application used for mDS, we have also developed and integrated complementary software solutions well in line with the mDS framework, which support the overall learning experience. Here, we present our main three main pilot studies which have provided us with outcomes and insights on technical and methodological requirements, as well as on the importance of an active teacher involvement in order to introduce and implement ideas, inspiration and routines from the mDS workflow into everyday educational practices. Applying the principles of codesign and design-based research (DBR) we have collaborated closely with involved teachers and other stakeholders, devoting an extensive amount of time to introduce the five phases of the mDS workflow and the different technologies. The primary remainder of the challenges for concluding the mDS workflow will be to further refine all software components involved and to fully integrate them into one single social computing platform in which the chosen MSL dimensions and the learning activities in the different phases act as the interconnecting glue. This platform will also serve as a repository and a sharing option for all procedures related to mDS and the mDS activity outcomes.

The outcomes of these efforts provided us with valuable insights on how to proceed further in our work of designing versatile mDS applications supporting collaborative learning in authentic contexts.

    Abstract [en]

    Classification of scientific bibliographic data is an important and increasingly more time-consuming task in a “publish or perish” paradigm where the number of scientific publications is steadily growing. Apart from being a resource-intensive endeavor, manual classification has also been shown to be often performed with a quite high degree of inconsistency. Since many bibliographic databases contain a large number of already classified records supervised machine learning for automated classification might be a solution for handling the increasing volumes of published scientific articles. In this study automated classification of bibliographic data, based on two different machine learning methods; Naive Bayes and Support Vector Machine (SVM), were evaluated. The data used in the study were collected from the Swedish research database SwePub and the features used for training the classifiers were based on abstracts and titles in the bibliographic records. The accuracy achieved ranged between a lowest score of 0.54 and a highest score of 0.84. The classifiers based on Support Vector Machine did consistently receive higher scores than the classifiers based on Naive Bayes. Classification performed at the second level in the hierarchical classification system used clearly resulted in lower scores than classification performed at the first level. Using abstracts as the basis for feature extraction yielded overall better results than using titles, the differences were however very small.

    In this paper the possibilities of handling the content of an online community with a categorization system are being explored. The system is considered to give the user the possibility to largely customize the content of the online community by interest and needs. The purpose of the work was to see if the use of categorization would be an appropriate step to take to increase user’s commitment. With the aid of the categorization the user would perhaps get better motivated to continue using his online community and maybe become more active as a member. To research this, questionnaires were created where 61 people answered questions related to the subject of the project. Also three interviews were held to complement the results from the questionnaire. In the paper both the questionnaire and the interview part are being discussed and the possibilities and the obstacles with using categorization are presented.

    Before the start of the industrial revolution the workplace has been ever changing with introduction of technologies. With the adoption of automation and artificial intelligence this marks an acceleration shift compared to the past. Where the need for technological, social, and emotional skills will rise while demands for physical and manual skills will fall. Investments in retraining the workforce to close the potential skills gap related to automation and digitalization is getting an increased business priority. The preferred ways of learning have changed over the last few years, stepped outside of the classic classroom trainings into the rapidly growing of online tools. The aim of this thesis is to know whether gamification can support reskilling of people, through the use of a digitally gamified learning experience. Through a qualitative research approach with semi-structured interviews this thesis found that digitally gamified learning experience increases the will to learn new skills. It also showed that using a digitally gamified learning experience the time spent on task increased when learning a new skill.

    Abstract [en]

    Testing strategies are not a new concept; they are used in development companies to present a strategy and an approach for how the testing of the software should be performed. However, test strategies are often specialised for individual companies or projects. Following an analysis of test strategies, the authors of the report have found a lack of test strategies that are generalised, that companies or projects can quickly start using to begin their software testing. This report will formulate and create a generalised test strategy that can be used by a number of small to medium-sized companies and projects. The method selection design science performs an iterative process where an artefact is created, the generalised test strategy. Developers from Greater Than AB participate in the design science process and test the generalised testing strategy. During each iteration, the generalised test strategy is evaluated through interviews with developers who participated in the testing of the generalised test strategy. With the interviews, each part of the generalised test strategy is examined and thus, the generalised test strategy is iteratively improved. The results of interviews conducted include what is added to the generalised test strategy and the artefact produced, the generalised test strategy, indicates a successful generalisation of a test strategy.

    Abstract

    Background

    Lean is a method and a philosophy that originates from Henry Ford’s production system and was first improved in Japan and then further at MIT in the USA and later spread across the world during the 1990s. Lean consists of a set of different tools and methods. However, it is important to understand that some of the tools and methods is older than Lean itself. With this in mind it is clear that Lean is not a new concept but is based upon many different tools and methods that are linked together. The difficulty of applying Lean is however not to use the tools and methods. The challenge for the organisation that wants to work according to Lean is to embrace the cultural change that needs to happen, the big-gest and most common barrier to a Lean-implementation is the organizational culture.

    Based on this background it is interesting to try to identify factors that Lean-users consider to be important. Once the factors are identified it is also important to understand why these factors are important in order to solve the problem and not to replace them with another problem.

    Objective

    The purpose of this study is to identify and with help from a theoretical framework explain some of the factors which affect the implementation of Lean. Our hope is that this study will contribute to a simplified implementation of Lean. Our research questions are:

    • What success factors can be identified in a Lean-implementation-process?
    • Why are these key-success-factors in a Lean-implementation-process?

    Realization

    The empirical study consists of a qualitative study of a case company that has started to implement Lean. The interviews have been conducted in the operational and managerial level in the company. The summarized results have then been compared against a theoretical framework in an effort to create a deeper understanding of the phenomena at hand.

    Results and conclusions

    The literature framework provides an understanding of what an organization change and Lean implementation means. Because the organizational culture is a central part of a Lean-implementation the study explains organizational culture in a separate chapter as like literature on how people interact. In the interviews, respondents explained what they considered to be Lean and the influence Lean has on their work situation and the company. The interviews were then summarized corresponding to the topics of the discussions.

    The conclusion presents a number of factors that is explained more deeply in the analysis. In order to use the factors that are identified, you need to understand the underlying causes. Every implementation is unique and therefore it is important to understand each factors cause.

    Alternative Polynomials for Rijndael: Diffusion Analysis2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The Rijndael cryptosystem uses a particular polynomial to create its constants. All calculations within the encryption and decryption layers are based on this polynomial. This arouse the curiosity to see what happens if the polynomial is substituted by other polynomials. This paper’s main area of study is to investigate the consequences of using different polynomials to construct the Rijndael cryptosystem. To do so, as a phase of this study, a Mathematica package has been created to ease the investigations. As the second phase, using the aforementioned package, some kind of diffusion analysis has been done on the newly constructed Rijndael-like cryptosystems. The fundamental challenge was to figure out the reason of having the particular polynomial chosen. By the end of the experiment, we concluded that choosing other polynomials with the same characteristics as an ingredient of the Rijndael algorithm, does not have any perceptible effects on the diffusion level.

    A change can be difficult, either if the organization is large or small. A major change in an organization is to go from a functional-based organization to a process-oriented organization. A process-oriented approach involves an activity actively working to put the customer's needs ahead of their own, which requires a full-blown, high motivation and dedication from the employees. The amount of failed change initiatives is many more than successful, which may be due to the fact that employees are not put in focus even though they are the recipient of change. The subject has been studied primarily for the purpose of investigating the experience of managers or other decision-makers. An important core of organizations is the employee's experience. The purpose of the study was to investigate the employees' perceived process establishment in a organization in question. The research questions have been answered during a quantitative method in which respondents participated in interviews and by email using a questionnaire. The collected material was analyzed and compiled in text and in charts. The result was divided into three areas: process management, process documentation and measurement and follow-up. The result showed that respondents experienced a lack of leadership and knowledge in the process establishment. The study showed that the employees in the case organization experience that there are documented processes but no pronounced common modeling techniques and lacking measurements entirely of the processes. The result also pointed out what aspects of the process establishment employees think is more or less established based on the survey. When the results were analyzed against the theory of the survey and research questions, the organization i question found more and less established areas.Our contribution with the survey will complement current research and previous research with what we consider missing in the scientific world: empirical studies about the employees' experience regarding the establishment of the process-oriented approach.

    Abstract [en]

    This qualitative study aims to investigate the use of social media sites by university library staff to facilitate undergraduate students. Two Greek academic libraries were examined and the specific social media investigated was Facebook since it was the only common social media to both libraries. The method that was used was the interpretive method in order to gain better insight of students’ perceptions, motivations and request their suggestions regarding the use of social media by academic libraries. More specifically, twelve undergraduate students were interviewed and then the results were analyzed via Thematic Analysis.

    The results of this research showed that students appreciate the existence of their library’s Facebook page as an informational tool. On the other hand, improvements should be made regarding its use as a communication tool. Benefits, such as time gain, the ability to get in touch with new people, job opportunities, and reminders of important educational programs (Erasmus), were acknowledged by all students. Moreover, interesting suggestions were made, such as to increase the availability of open access books, the use of cameras for communicating with librarians via Facebook, and an increase in the number of photos of books. Other ideas were the ability to see the availability of books in the library, the ability to borrow them electronically, and the creation of a Facebook group to discuss common interests with other students.

    Legacy systems today manages many critical business processes of many organisations and banks. These systems are expensive to maintain and update with new features. Legacy systems is also difficult to adapt to a SOA (Service Oriented Architecture). Therefore, the companies want to begin phasing out these systems. SOA is an approach in how to structure a system. Everything should be built of services that are not depending on each other and therefore in the future will be easy to replace, update or delete. Since no services will be dependent on any other, you can change one without harming another. More and more companies today want to move to a SOA, therefore they are looking for ways to migrate their legacy systems to modern platforms. There are several ways to migrate legacy systems. Every way has different advantages and disadvantages. One of the safer methods is called Chicken Little, but it takes longer than, for example using the method Cold Turkey. Several companies have also specialized in automatically translating old code to a modern programming language, this technique is called transcoding. There are companies that are working to get Cobol to work with more modern languages such as Java. One of the bigger companies that is developing ways to combine COBOL and Java is Micro Focus. They have developed a library that allows you to start COBOL programs from Java. To avoid legacy systems in the future, several maintenance models have been created. Maintenance models are structured in different ways, but all have the goal to avoid future legacy systems.

    Abstract [en]

    Internet of Things (IoT) introduces the Big Data era as the IoT devices produce massive amounts of data daily. Since IoT devices contain limited computational and processing capabilities, processing the data at the edge is challenging. For example, power consumption becomes problematic if data is processed on the IoT device itself. Thus, there is a need to feed this massive data into the cloud platform for analysis. However, uploading the data from IoT devices to the cloud platform causes a delay which is a significant issue for delay-sensitive applications. This tradeoff between delay and power needs a favorable policy to decide where it should allocate the task from edge to cloud processing platform. Research on this subject addresses this issue quite frequently, and various methods have been proposed to mitigate the problem. The previous studies usually focus on the edge-to-cloud computing platform, i.e., they efficiently offload the computational tasks onto the IoT devices and cloud. This thesis proposes a balanced task allocation between edge and cloud computing regarding power consumption and delay. We accomplish our idea by comparing the different task allocation methods, benchmarking in different scenarios, and evaluating by proposing mathematical modeling.

    Web Font Optimization for Mobile Internet Users: A performance study of resource prioritization approaches for optimizing custom fonts on the web2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis

    According to the HTTP Archive, 75% of websites are using web fonts. Multiple conditions have to be met before modern web browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Safari decide to download the web fonts needed on a page. As a result, web fonts are late discovered resources that can delay the First Meaningful Paint (FMP). Improving the FMP is relevant for the web industry, particularly for performance-conscious web developers. This paper gives insight into how the resource prioritization approaches HTTP/2 Preload and HTTP/2 Server Push can be used to optimize the delivery of web fonts for first-time visitors. Five font loading strategies that use HTTP/2 Server Push and/or Preload were implemented on replicas of the landing pages from five real-world websites. The font loading strategies were evaluated against each other, and against the non-optimized version of each landing page. All the evaluated font loading strategies in this degree project improved the time it took to deliver the first web font content to the user’s screen, resulting in a faster FMP. It was also discovered that HTTP/2 Server Push, on its own, is not a more performance efficient resource prioritization approach than HTTP/2 Preload when it comes to delivering web font content to the client. Further, HTTP/2 Server Push and HTTP/2 Preload appears to be more efficient when used together, in the context of optimizing the delivery of web font content. However, all conclusions in this paper are based on the results gathered from testing the font loading strategies in an emulated environment and are yet to be confirmed on actual mobile devices with real network conditions.

    Abstract [en]

    Dynamic model driven architecture (DMDA) is a architecture made to aid in the

    development of parallel computing code. This thesis is applied to an implementation of

    DMDA known as DMDA3 that should convert graphs of computations into efficient

    computation code, and it deals with the translation of Platform Specific Models (PSM)

    into running systems. Currently DMDA3 can generate schedules of operations but not

    finished code.

    This thesis describes a DMDA3 module that turns a schedule of operations into a

    runable program. Code was obtained from the DMDA3 schedules by reflection and a

    framework was build that allowed generation of low level language code from

    schedules. The module is written in Java and can currently generate C and Fortran code

    for computational tasks. Based on runtime tests for matrix multiplication algorithms the

    generated code is almost as fast as handwritten code.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper examines the importance of different touchpoints within a customer journey for increased customer engagement, focusing specifically on the grocery market. Because of the trend within the commerce industry to consider at customer’s overall experience as oppose to the individual purchase, customer engagement and omnichannel are therefore highly relevant approaches for a company to consider when forming their touchpoint architecture.  Touchpoints can be physical as well as digital points of contact between a brand and a customer. These touchpoints normally work in joint co-operation with each other, through omnichannels, for a complete customer experience. This complete experience is formed through the process of service design which includes a thoroughly designed touchpoint architecture in which the customer travels as part of her customer journey. Furthermore, this paper examines to which extent a process can be digitalised through applying the Process Virtualization Theory (PVT) model. In order to understand the customer engagement process and the reasons behind customer engagement the Uses and Gratification Theory (UGT) model is also applied. With this theoretic background in place thirteen semi-structured interviews with a card sorting exercise was conducted to examine the attitudes and behaviours related to, and associated with, a company’s touchpoints within the Swedish grocery market industry. The customer research presented in this paper shows that the most important touchpoints for customer engagement are store offers and discounts, a grocery store’s atmosphere and supply and finally store location. These touchpoints are the main reasons to why customers choose to engage with a grocery store brand as they are perceived as the most important reasons a specific brand is chosen. There are other reasons too, and often the choice of brand is also determined by convenience and time available. However, the study shows that these reasons are only secondary to the former reasons. These results are supported by the two models mentioned above. In order to increase customer engagement a brand should therefore put resources into digital solutions, to the extent possible according to the PVT model, to reinforce the motivational factors from the UGT-model in these touchpoints. This way the physical and digital world would meet through omnichannel as the solutions would assist customers in their customer journey to make their overall experience better.

    Nowadays, the hybrid working model has prevailed as the new working model for many organizations, which combines working remotely and onsite. Although the hybrid working model is not new, the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the transition from traditional working model to hybrid one, which results in greater use of technology, especially for the employees’ collaboration. Collaboration is at the core of agile development team members’ daily hybrid work, and it is achieved through the support of technology tools, such as Microsoft Teams. The hybrid working model, due to its complexity, creates opportunities and challenges to the way agile development team members’ work and collaborate. Therefore, it is important to examine the collaboration of agile development team members that follow the hybrid working model, as well as benefits and challenges that may arise. Thus, this master thesis examines, the technology-supported collaboration of agile development team members, that follow the hybrid working model, taking as an example Microsoft Teams (MS Teams). For this, an interpretive qualitative ethnographic research was conducted. The data was collected through participant observations, focus groups discussions, and semi-structured interviews from purposively selected team members of three agile development teams. The collected data was analyzed thematically and generated six themes. These six themes represent the findings of the master’s thesis research and are interpreted and discussed with the help of the theoretical framework, which includes the concepts of agile project management, computer-supported cooperative work, collaboration, cooperation, coordination, information sharing, communication and hybrid working model.  

    The research findings show that it is vital for the members of the agile development teams to use a collaboration tool in their daily hybrid work to assure close and frequent collaboration, which in the traditional working model was mainly achieved face-to-face on-site. Their collaboration includes communication, information sharing, and coordination activities, which are supported and facilitated by the technological tool of MS Teams. However, the hybrid working model has given rise to challenges in the collaboration among the agile development team members, which can be overcome if the technological tool of MS Teams is used properly by everyone. This research contributes to the existing knowledge of the informatics research field and the body of research of computer-supported cooperative work by providing a better understanding of how technological tools are used to support collaborating team members that follow the hybrid working model, including benefits and challenges experienced. It also contributes to agile development team members and other practitioners that use MS Teams through improved understanding of aspects that can be taken into consideration for the use of a collaboration technological tool, and the generation of guidelines for such technology in order to make the use of it most efficient.

    Abstract [en]

    Test-driven development is a software development practice that prompts developers to write tests before writing source code. Studies report varied results on the effects that test-driven development has on the development process, and how this practice compares to other development practices, such as more traditional test-last development methodologies. There also seems like there has not been a discussion around the possible problems that a developer could encounter when adopting this technique, something that seems relevant to making accurate assumptions on the usability of the practice. A literature review was conducted, where the subject of test-driven development is examined with a focus on how inexperienced programmers interact with the practice and what effect it has on the product, in terms of external quality, productivity, number of test written and test coverage. The results suggest that there are no significant differences in external quality and productivity between TDD and TLD. The results also suggest that divide and conquer and refactoring are skills that ease the process of adopting the test-driven development practice.

    Abstract [en]

    Measuring adherence to clinical guidelines using mobile health (mHealth) technologies when form field validation is enforced or turned on could potentially be viewed as skewing the dataset, leading to 100% adherence to the clinical rule base. In theory, healthcare providers should fully abide by clinical guidelines, whether in paper or digital format, to ensure that the patient receives appropriate care. However, what happens when mHealth form field validation is turned off? As part of a feasibility study in Malawi, Africa, we explored this phenomenon. Switching off validation on the mHealth artefact served its purpose within the context of a feasibility study where a parallel paper-based clinical assessment process remained in place. The design of this technical artefact with the turnkey validation feature afforded us the opportunity to turn validation on and off seamlessly. Ultimately, from an ethical, clinical and technical perspective the optimum approach is to ensure that form field validation is switched on. With form field validation on adherence to the clinical guidelines is enforced which minimises incomplete assessment and the potential for suboptimal clinical decisions that could adversely affect patient care.

    This work introduces the available authorization frameworks for the purpose of Single Sign-On functionality within an enterprise, along with the fundamental technicalities. The focus of the work is on SAML 2.0 and OAuth 2.0 frame- works. Following the details related to available protocol flows, supported client profiles and security considerations, the two frameworks are compared in accordance with a set of factors given in a criteria. The report discusses the possibilities provided by a Microsoft Windows based infrastructure, as well as different scenarios and their feasibility in an enterprise environment. The preferred framework, OAuth 2.0, is selected according to the given criteria and the comparative discussions.

    Abstract [en]

    Chatbots are very widely used nowadays. However, much of the research on Chatbots have had a technology focus or has been limited to studies of adoption. To take advantage of the potential associated with chatbots, research that addresses the issues online users face when interacting with such programs is needed. The study described in this paper used the task-to technology fit theory to address the question of how individual characteristics and task/technology requirements influence the performance and utilization of chatbots. This paper used the quantitative methodology over two sets of data collected independently from two different populations. The first dataset of 100 respondents was obtained firstly through a structured questionnaire administered at Linnaeus University Campus in Växjö. The respondents are students in the university who use chatbots regularly. A second dataset was also collected from 20 participants through a practical test experiment with three different chatbots (Eliza, Rose, and Watson). The result and the data were then recorded through an online interview via the zoom application. The two datasets were analyzed quantitatively using comparative factor analysis with the aid of Smart PLS software. While few variables provided little support for the claims, the majority of the variables show strong support for the importance of task–technology fit, as a measure of chatbot utilization and performance based on individual characteristics as well as the task/technology requirements.

    I dagsläget används VPN allt mer bland företagen för att ansluta till olika nätverk. Detta kan medföra att routingtabellen blir alltför stor och det kan i sin tur påverka processorbelastningen på routern som delar ut alla VPN.Detta arbete hade som syfte att granska om det är några märkbara prestandaskillnader på en routers processor när olika routingprotokoll används tillsammans med VRF. Protokollen som detta arbete tog upp var BGP, OSPF och RIP.Tre olika nätverks-scenarier skapades där olika tester genomfördes för de tre nämnda routingprotokollen. Det gjordes även tester på routrar när ingen VRF användes för att jämföra resultaten. Testerna bestod av att granska processorbelastningen på routrar när det fanns många rutter i nätverket och när nätverket var belastat med trafik.Testernas visade att skillnaden mellan BGP och OSPF inte är särskilt stor, men när RIP användes så steg processorbelastningen markant när nätverket hade många rutter. Om däremot VRF användes tillsammans med RIP så sjönk belastningen avsevärt på vissa routrar.

    Abstract [en]

    Big data in industry 4.0 is a major subject for the currently developed research but also for the organizations that are motivated to invest in these kinds of projects. The big data are known as the large quantity of data collected from various resources that potentially could be analyzed and provide valuable insights and patterns. In industry 4.0 the production of data is massive, and thus, provides the basis for analysis and important information extraction. This study aims to provide the impact of big data analytics in industry 4.0 environments by the utilization of the SWOT dimensions framework with the intention to provide both a positive and a negative perspective of the subject. Considering that these implementations are an innovative trend and limited awareness exists for the subject, it is valuable to summarize and explore the identified findings from the published literature that will be reviewed based on interviews with data scientists. The intention is to increase the knowledge of the subject and inform the organizations about their potential expectations and challenges. The effects are represented in the SWOT analysis based on findings collected from 22 selected articles which were afterwards discussed with professionals. The systematic literature review started with the creation of a plan and specifically defined steps approach based on previously existing scientific papers. The relevant literature was decided upon specified inclusion and exclusion criteria and their relevance to the research questions. Following this, the interview questionnaire was build based on the findings in order to gather empirical data on the subject. The results revealed that the insights developed through big data support the management towards effective decision-making since it reduces the ambiguity of the actions. Meanwhile, the optimization of production, expenditure decrement, and customer satisfaction are the following as top categories mentioned in the selected articles for the strength dimension. In the opportunities, the interoperability of the equipment, the real-time information acquirement and exchange, and self-awareness of the systems are reflected in the majority of the papers. On the contrary, the threats and weaknesses are referred to fewer studies. The infrastructure limitations, security, and privacy issues are demonstrated substantially. The organizational changes and human resources matters are also expressed but infrequently. The data scientists agreed with the findings and mentioned that decision-making, process effectiveness and customer relationships are their major expectations and objectives while the experience and knowledge limitations of the personnel is their main concern. In general, the gaps in the existing literature could be identified in the challenges that occur for the big data projects in industry 4.0. Consequently, further research is recommended in the field in order to raise the awareness in the interested parties and ensure the project’s success.

    The following bachelor thesis explores the design of a GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliant graphical user interface, for an administrative school system. The work presents the process of developing and evaluating a web-based prototype, a platform chosen because of its availability. The aim is to investigate if the design increases the caregivers perception of being in control over personal data, both their own and data related to children in their care. The methods for investigating this subject are grounded in real world research, using both quantitative and qualitative methods.

     

    The results indicate that the users perceive the prototype to be useful, easy to use, easy to learn and that they are satisfied with it. The results also point towards the users feeling of control of both their own and their child’s personal data when using the prototype. The users agree that a higher sense of control also increases their sense of security.

    Abstract [en]

    Recent natural disasters, like the earthquakesin Port-au-Prince, Haiti (2010), Christchurch, New Zealand(2011) and the Tohoku earthquake in Japan (2011), whichalso triggered a tsunami resulting in the catastrophic failureof numerous nuclear power plants, pose the question howto support first responders in providing fast and adequatehelp. When first responders arrive on-site it is crucial thatthe flow of information is ensured: important fields arelogistics, communication, personal management and the deploymentof up-to-date information. Unfortunately the eventsin the past showed that there are certain shortcomings,especially in terms of communicating information from localresponders to arriving responders. Our approach proposesthe utilization of large public displays, seizing the ideaof traditional pinboards, referred in our work as DigitalInteractive Public Pinboards (DIPP). DIPPs are set up inhot spot locations and provide fast and reliable informationto first responders as well as citizens in the area of thenatural disaster.

    Abstract [en]

    There are 4 Distansapotek in Sweden and the biggest is in Hässleholm. A Distansapotek deliver medicines to older people that can’t go to a usually pharmacy. Their vision on qual-ity ant quality work starts from the customer’s safety.

    The ground to a successful quality work begins with commitment from the top and con-tinues from there. No commitment from the top will not led to any quality work among the personal. Some of the grounds are to put the customer in the middle, base all decision on facts and involve all in it. On Distansapoteket they use these grounds, because the cus-tomer is the most important and before they make a decision they do controls and Ishi-kawa- diagrams to get some facts. These controls also involve the personal in the work. The tools are excellent to use in collection, structuring and analysing information.

    Their quality work is continually with improvements before, under and after the produc-tion. Some other tools from de seven Quality Control-tools that they are using are Pareto-diagram, Histogram plus control cards and sample tests to reach their goals.

    There is four kinds of techniques to use in choose of the units to a sample test, these are simple, systematic, stratification and several steps. In choose of how many units depends on the time and costs. Other things that it is dependent on are the need and precision.

    When wrong things comes classify them after how serious they are. On Distansapoteket they classify the mistakes after this, can the mistake led to harm on the customer or not.

    From the controls that where completed on Distansapoteket resulted in very much facts from some parts and less on other parts. One big problem is with the products, sometimes there is no product, wrong product or wrong number of products. A little later in the pro-duction there is another problem and that is the handling of etiquettes on the medicine; it can be missing, bad place or covering important information. The last big problem is wrong placement, another transporters gets it.

    An input of small controls in different parts of the process can lead to that these problems are found earlier. All problems need to be down writhen so they can be solved. If no one brings them up nothing will happened.

    Abstract [en]

    As the usage of smartphones has increased and the technology also has developed, it has become increasingly common with tracking of GPS devices. The usage includes multiple areas such as tracking of animals, vehicles, and people. Early research has mainly focused on the technical aspects with GPS and in a few of these sources it is briefly mentioned that mobile interfaces have been criticized by the study participants and are considered difficult to use. The purpose of this research was to increase the understanding on how tracking applications interface can be designed to be more user friendly. Through a User-Centered work to map how elements and functions in a current interface can improve to ease the users cognitive load during usage. The research had a qualitative approach and the data that was collected through interviews with experienced users of the tracking application Go. It was the interface of Go that was being studied during the research. To answer our research question, Fogg's behavior model was used together with UX and information architecture to create questions for the interviews and to analyze the results. Results of this research are not generalizable since the sample was small and not randomly selected. Hence, the results of the research provided a first insight of which elements in the interface that need development to improve the interface of tracking applications. The research showed that the informants are motivated enough and that it was primarily their ability that needed to be increased and, in some cases, triggers were needed. The elements on the interface that needed to be developed were, the history, the alarm, placemarks, settings, information page and live tracking. The approach to develop the elements often touches on a graphical clarity or explanatory note.

    Abstract [en]

    The problem this study intended to answer was why home automation is not used in more homes. The results of a survey that was distributed could conclude that the cost of existing solutions available on the market today is not within the price range our respondents considered reasonable. The authors then evolved the problem and asked themselves whether home automation really need such a high cost as the existing solutions today. To illustrate this problem, the authors implemented a cost-effective solution where respondents' most popular features were in regard. The result was a home automation solution with great potential and with a significantly lower cost than today's existing solutions.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores current guidelines for the development of menu systems in virtual reality with the main focus aimed toward gaming environments. These guidelines were gathered with the help of a literature study and two expert interviews. A game environment was created as a platform to test the systems. A 2D menu system and a 3D menu system were implemented with the help of gathered guidelines. The prototype was tested with participants in an experiment and empirical data was gathered and analyzed. The measured data shows minor differences in inefficiency, error rate, and learnability but a greater difference in immersiveness thus resulting in a subjectively preferred system to be 3D based.

    Abstract [en]

    Storing warranty receipts can sometimes be problematic. Receiptscan be lost, bleached and become illegible or in an extreme case, the storage area is destroyed.

    The company Freck AB offers a service to store these receiptsonline. They also provides a webpage where the user is able to handle their receipts and an iPhone client for easier uploading.

    Since the smartphones are increasing in market share each year, with different operating systems, it causes a market fragmentation. If Freck AB wants to address more potential customers, the application needs to get ported to more platforms. Currently iOS holds a 15.7% of the market share, and if the application is ported to the AndroidOS platform, 38.4% of the smartphone users will be addressed.

    This thesis will present a portation of an iOS application to the Android OS platform. It will also discuss basic Android programming together with the Android SDK classes and techniques used.

    The portation was considered successful and the subgoals were met. The application has been tested on multiple emulators and on one physical device with good results.

    Abstract [en]

    Digitalization has become part of everyday life where almost all community services today have been digitalized. Social media, applications and digital services is something that belongs to the norm. Ending up in digital exclusion can have long-term consequences and is a risk that the elderly in society is particularly exposed to as research shows that many elderly people do not use digital technologies to the same extent.

    The purpose of this study is to find out how this digitalization has affected the elderly people in society in Sweden, by investigating how elderly people experience technologies today and then also to examine in what way that digital technologies could be designed so that more elderly people can take part in them.

    The study was done with an initial literature study based on previous research and the concepts of user experience, usability, and universal design. Thereafter, interviews were conducted as a qualitative data collection method.

    The results show that many older people see difficulties regarding their digital use, they feel an insecurity and fear of making mistakes and sometimes have difficulty understanding how things should be done and have difficulty interpreting the information provided. The elderly wants a simple language and preferably in Swedish. Instructions that explain abbreviations and that not too much information is displayed at once are some of the things that the elderly feel could facilitate their use. This shows that there is more to be done to make everyone in the population feel included within the digitalization and that designing with the user in focus is a step in the right direction.

    Information security is tasked with protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of an organizations information resource. A key aspect in protecting these resources is developing an

    understanding of the threats, vulnerabilities, and exposures that they face by using Risk Management.

    The objective of Risk Management is to identify, quantify and manage information security risks to achieve organizations objectives through a number of tasks utilizing key Risk Management techniques.

    Risk Management is a process that ensures that the impact of threats exploiting vulnerabilities is within acceptable limits and at an acceptable cost.

    With the increased complexity of modern dynamic networks, traditional defence mechanisms are failing and as a result cyber crime is on the rise [FBI03]. This puts organizations and corporations at risk as the defences are ill-fitted and weak [KBM04].

    No information system can be absolutely secure, especially large and complex systems. Embedded security works for isolated, dedicated systems with few users but does not offer cost effective security, and even worse does not always handle security based on a real threat (this is manly due to it inherent inflexibility). A military strategy within the field of information operations suggests a method of information superiority bases on the OODA-loop. This theses propose a method of information security protection based on a combination of risk management techniques and information operation (foremost the OODA-loop). This is in order to ensure a cost effective and a viable future for information security in large

    and complex systems, where the war at least at present time is lost to the “black hats”, a term often used to describe a menaced hacker.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to see how the communication and information flow looks between foster home and the municipality and how foster homes experience the communication. The reason we wanted to investigate this was because we were interested in the subject, that the media had pointed out problems with foster families and we did not find any previous research that had examined this. Since we were interested in how foster homes experienced the communication, we chose to perform the study form the perspectives of the foster homes.

    A foster family is a family that receives a child who cannot live at home with their parents on behalf of a municipality or a company who works for the municipality (SKL, 2013a; Familjehemmet, 2013a).

    The theories that we have chosen to use to later analyze the results touches the topics communication and information. The reason we chose these theories was because they suited our purpose, and that misunderstandings and conflicts can be due to a lack of communication or lack of information flow.

    To perform this study, we used a qualitative approach in which we have interviewed three different foster families, one face-to-face and two by telephone. The interviews had a semi-open structure with an interview guide (see Appendix 1) with mostly open-ended questions. As the information that emerges may be sensitive, we have chosen to treat informants with anonymity.

    The results show deficiencies in both the communication and information flows and the foster homes are dissatisfied with it. One of the reasons that there are flaws is that the communication channels are not functioning optimally due to that the foster homes have a hard time getting ahold of their social workers.

    In the analysis the theories are connected together with the result, where we can see the causes and reasons for why foster homes experience communication and information flow in a certain way, and the penalties that may arise from any flaws such as why communication channels are not functioning optimally and what this can lead to.

    Later we discuss the results, make suggestions for improvement and discuss the study's validity and reliability. Our suggestion for improvement would be to have an information system where foster homes and the municipality can communicate relevant information to supplement oral communication.

    Finally we check to see if we have answered our purpose, and we give suggestions for further research such as to look at the subject from perspective of the municipality.

    Just as the title indicates this report is about making an AJAX driven web application for searching sold real estates.

    Today Gota Media AB has access to a large amount of information about sold real estates in XML format that comes from Lantmäteriet. According to Gota Media there is a great need to create a searchable web application for the online magazines that they provide to present the information to their readers.

    The aim of this report is to show how the development can be facilitated using the framework CodeIgniter and to provide answer to a number of question formulations on how the web application can be developed to meet several requirements from the customer.

    By way of using CodeIgniter with a majority group of techniques such as Google Maps, CURL, AJAX and jQuery all of the base requirements where implemented and a good result were presented in the form of a fully functional web application.

    Abstract [en]

    We are becoming more interested in furnishing in our homes, and there is big opportunities with Virtual 3D, which makes this project relevant for the time we live in. The project is about making a first prototype of a furnish-able 3D environment with integrated user friendly interface to be trailed by Mio for use in their shops. The prototype builds on two demonstration movies of the application where the interface and the users interaction options has been visualized in a standard LCD computer monitor and are synchronized with a 3D environment showing in an auto stereoscopic display. The interface was designed to be user friendly so that Mio´s customer themselves should be able to use the application and with help of special 3D-monitors and rendering techniques the environment should be experienced as in reality. The project started with a feasibility study with interviews and research. Theories taken as the basis for the project were about usability, virtual reality and how to find the right users. Theories around usability together with a scenario made it possible to develop the interface from a user friendly point of view. The prototype has been presented to users, the result indicates that there was a big interest for both the customers of Mio and the employees of Mio in Kalmar. The result from the presentation also contributed to information aiding development of the application in the future. Even the usability was improved by the results of the presentation. The 3D environment that was made contained a depth dimension and according to the user results, it could be described as a real experience.

With its many features and great flexibility, the smartphone has stormed the business world and become an alternative or complement to the laptop. As these mobile units' popularity has increased, the interest of businesses to invest in this new technology has increased, but has security kept up with the technology developments?

    This study aims to conduct a study to see if the companies in the IT industry have the same safety awareness for smart phones to laptops.

    The study shows that companies have greater safety awareness and higher safety requirements for laptops than smartphones. Meanwhile, both end-users and management are well aware of the risks and threats that the smartphone is facing.

    Incremental Clustering of Source Code: a Machine Learning Approach2022Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Technical debt at the architectural level is a severe threat to software development projects. Uncontrolled technical debt that is allowed to accumulate will undoubtedly hinder speedy development and maintenance, introduce bugs and problems in the software product, and may ultimately result in the abandonment of the source code. 

    It is possible to detect debt accumulation by analyzing the source code and intended modules in the software architecture. However, this is seldom done in practice since it requires a correct and up-to-date mapping from source code to intended modules in the architecture. This mapping requires significant manual effort to create and maintain, something often considered too costly and laborsome. 

    We investigate how to automate the mapping from source code to intended modules. The state-of-the-art considers it an incremental clustering problem, where source code entities should be clustered to the intended modules based on some similarity measure. As the system evolves and source code entities are added or modified, the clustering needs to be updated. 

    The state-of-the-art techniques determine similarity based on either syntactic or semantic features, e.g., dependencies or identifier names. Large sets of parameters modify these features, e.g., weights for various types of dependencies. These parameters have a significant impact on how well the clustering performs. Unfortunately, we have not been able to identify any heuristics to help human experts determine a good set of parameters for a given system. Based on the parameters determined by, e.g., genetic optimization, it seems unlikely that general heuristics exist.

    Instead, we compute the similarity using a multinomial na\"ive Bayes text classifier trained on tokens from the source code entities. We also include a novel feature that captures dependencies as text to add syntactic features. Our classifier, which relies on significantly fewer parameters, outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques, with their parameters set to near-optimal values.

    We find that machine learning provides better mapping performance with fewer required parameters. We can successfully combine syntactic information with semantic information without additional parameters. We provide an open-source tool suite with a reference implementation of different techniques and a curated set of systems that can act as a ground truth benchmark.

    Towards Pattern Based Architectural Conformance Checking2016Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Patterns are a source of knowledge when architecting software systems. They provide abstract and time-tested solutions that show how a system should be structured to achieve needed qualities. However, when developing software there is a chance that small mistakes are introduced in the source code. Over time, these mistakes can accumulate and break the structure of the pattern and its qualities are lost. There are methods that can help find such errors, but none of these provide a pattern abstraction. In this work, we describe a method that raises the level of abstraction from checking individual dependencies to checking key dependencies in the pattern. We implement our method, apply it to check the Model-View-Controller pattern. We show that the method can find architectural problems in real source code and examine how removal of detected erosions affects the source code. We conducted an experiment in a software project setting to determine if using the method affects the number of architectural problems. Some project teams were randomly assigned to use a software service that automated our method. It checked how well their implementation conformed to Model-View-Controller every time they updated the source code. The experiment showed that developers that used the tool had significantly fewer detected architectural problems during the course of the project. Our method makes conformance checking easier to use. This might help increase the adoption of conformance checking in industry.
