    Abstract [en]

About 35 years ago the WHO advocated that countries with injecting drug users should introduce the so-called needle exchange programs (NEP) to curb the spread of infection by blood-borne diseases. In Sweden the first NEP started 1985 in Lund, but the program was extremely controversial in a country with such a restrictive drug policy like Sweden.

The study you are about to read shall process this controversy, when a NEP opened in Stockholm, by analyzing the articles published in the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. By using discourse analysis as a processing tool we’ll try to see the difference between the two chosen newspapers. We will identify and analyze the different participant’s, such as doctors, politicians, user associations and media, arguments in the needle exchange issue.

Our results show that the liberal DN articles were supportive of the NEP and that they considered it to be an infectious disease control issue. The liberal conservative newspaper SvD had a different view of the issue and considered NEP to be a question about drug policy. Even after the decision was made the city had problems to find suitable premises for the NEP to operate from.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find out how the non-governmental shelters for battered women identify themselves in context of their dependence and cooperation with the municipality. Their legitimacy is also investigated which is based on, along with identity, key concepts of the neoinstitutional organization theory. The mutual dependency between these two actors is problematized along with the question of who is responsible for assisting the battered women, and who takes on the responsibilities for them. The empirical result that is analyzed was gathered through three qualitative semi structured interviews with employed personnel at three different battered women’s shelters in three different municipalities in Sweden. Further, three qualitative semi structured interviews was held with a representative from the social services offices in those same municipalities. The results show that although the interaction between the battered women’s shelters and the municipalities vary a bit, all the battered women’s shelters are dependent on the municipalities in which they function for economic resources. It appears in the interviews that there is a mutual dependency whereas the social services rely on the knowledge and experiences the battered women’s shelters have gathered through the years, along with the low cost volunteer workers bring the organization.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine young offenders’ attitudes towards crime, and to the penalty they have been sentenced to as juveniles. More specifically its aim was to examine an intervention program called Galaxen, specifically used  to deal with  juveniles  in Växjö. This intervention program consists mainly of conversations with social workers from social services,  aiming  towards  better  self-awareness  and  the  ability  to  understand  the  consequences  of one’s actions. In two focus groups, ten social workers involved in Galaxen were asked to discuss  these matters.  Three  individual  interviews with  young  offenders  previously  attending Galaxen were also conducted. The analysis was based on a social learning perspective, identifying  anti-  and  procriminal  attitudes.  It was  concluded  that  young  offenders’  attitudes  towards crime may be  the result of previous and present exposure  to anti- or procriminal attitudes,  and  that modeling  and  social  control  conducted  by  grown-ups,  especially  parents,  is quite  important when  it comes  to  young people’s behavioral development.  It was  also  concluded that one’s self-efficacy may be altered, by learning to think through new perspectives.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Title: The construction of “unaccompanied children” in regional media – a discourse analysis of representation, in the light of the “refugee crisis” 2015 [Translated title]

    Supervisor: Barzoo Eliassi

    Assessor: Ulf Drugge

The purpose of this study was to problematize how unaccompanied children were depicted in news articles in regional media, in the light of the so called “refugee crisis” of 2015. 18 news articles concerning unaccompanied children have been analysed from a social constructive perspective, using discourse theory, the concept of representation and Michel Foucault’s perspective on power. Through this analysis, I have been able to identify two main discourses, where unaccompanied children were represented mostly by individuals in power position. The category was thus represented in two diverse ways, on the one hand as exposed and in need of help and protection, on the other hand as encumbering to the society. They were at the same time depicted as a homogenous group, passive in relation to the surrounding society. I have further been able to illustrate how unaccompanied children were being excluded from the discourses, through their limited participation and opportunity to represent themselves through the articles. When given this opportunity in one of the articles, four young people categorised as “unaccompanied children” represented the category as active, responsible individuals, thus presenting an alternative portrayal of unaccompanied children. With this study, I aimed to gain a deeper understanding of what kind of portrayals of unaccompanied children that may have become a premise from which people think of and treat these young people. I also aimed to raise awareness of how the power of medias portrayal of diverse groups of people can affect the conception of individuals that are categorised into these groups, as well as those individuals’ conception of themselves.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This bottom-up study argue that making of social politics occurs in the meeting between the citizen and the representative of state. In order to generate a deeper understanding of the production of politics, the aim of this study was to identify expressed motivators and arguments in relation to a specific policy, which would unveil the underlying rationalities of actions taken by the specific actors. The policy was introduced in the Växjö municipality in June of 2017 and has changed the benefit distributed by the social services for immigrants waiting to start an employment program through an employment bureau into a loan.

In-depth interviews study, a total of 9 interviews have been undertaken with; decision-making politicians, public officials working with the policy and service users who have been affected by the policy. The data was processed and analyzed according to themes and to theory on rationality. The results showed that the main rationality forming the actions of politicians and public officials was linked to their ambition of upholding an efficient use of resources for the benefit of municipality economy. The main rationality behind the actions of the service users was to obtain autonomi in their life. An important goal for both parties was that the service users should become self-sustaining. Furthemore, the politicians and public officials clamied the responsibility for goal-fullfilment to realy on the individuals and not on the municipality.

In addition, the results of this study has revealed that the way that politicians and public officials´ view immigrants, has affected the framing of the policy, deriving from a paternalistic understanding. Service users in the study expressed eagerness and high motivation towards starting employment. However, service users in this study viewed the loan as a hindrance rather than a support towards accomplishing the goal of employment, thus becoming autonomic.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how social workers relate to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, regarding their cultural background and potential social issues. In order to achieve a more profound and comprehensive view of the social workers views regarding the separated children, we selected to execute semi structured interviews with social workers. These interviews were aimed at those social workers who performed assessments and investigations concerning unaccompanied children. We completed nine interviews which we recorded and transcribed in a strict manor. When we analyzed the empirical material, certain themes where identified as more protuberant and thus we our selection was based on what we regarded as the most relevant topics, in accordance to the aim of the study. Furthermore, our focus was set upon the social workers views regarding cultural differences between unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and Swedish children. We also decided to focus on which views these social workers portrayed, regarding the unaccompanied asylum-seeking child’s cultural background and how social issues could affect the social workers frame, their assets and formulation of their interventions, concerning separated children. We learned during our study that the social workers are enduring a heavy workload, especially since the numbers of arriving separated children are rapidly increasing. Furthermore, the economical recourses, in forms of personnel, are not increasing the same pace. In recent years, societal attitudes have altered and more negative and separative views regarding separated children are apparent. However, the social workers have applied a more universalistic approach towards the children to show the resemblances rather than differences between unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and Swedish children. Our study makes evident, that underneath this universalistic policy, culturalization of the children took form and this development also affected how the interventions were framed. Conclusively, this study displays how culturalization of the interventions affected the care of the children negatively and resulted in a declining standard of care, as well as differentiation of care.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine which support the communities in Kalmar have to offer children who have witnessed domestic violence. The study also includes how social services justify this actions based on the childs needs. The study includes six respondents; four socialworkers, one head of unit at “Alternativ till våld” and one manager at “Barnahuset” in Kalmar.

The method used in this study is a qualitative research approach with semi-structured interviews.

The study concludes that children who have witnessed domestic violence seldom are known by social services, but when a child is recognized the social service use “Alternativ Till Våld” or a general support. It also reveals that those children often have a lower priority when weighed against children who has been abused.

Den uniformerade verklighetens polisblick2015Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the experience, knowledge and attitude to mandatory reports of mistreatments amongst first line managers and assistance nurses in municipal elderly care. The following questions were at the center of the analysis: how do the different professional groups view having to report their own organization? How can various factors affect the mandatory reporting of mistreatments? What knowledge do the different professional groups have of mistreatments and mandatory reporting? A qualitative research method was used to examine these questions in the form of semi structured interviews and a small document study. The interviews were carried out with assistance nurses and first line manages in elder care, we interviewed four respondents from both professional groups. The interviews were then transcribed and coded with help of a content analysis. We have used Berger and Luckmanns theories about institutionalization when analyzing our results. We have also used Lipskys theory about street-level bureaucracy. The analysis is structured around themes and analyzed based on previous research and the above said theories. Our results show that there is a struggle amongst the both first line managers and assistance nurses to fully comprehend the complexity of mandatory reporting of mistreatments and that it’s often hard to draw the line between mandatory reporting of mistreatments and other less severe reporting’s such as deviation reports. Further, we have concluded that there is a fear amongst assistance nurses of reporting. Primarily because of a belief that reprisals, first and foremost from colleagues, will follow. We have also concluded that the workplace often seems to be characterized by a normative system in which loyalty and silence are common elements which may inhibit reporting.

Key words: mandatory reporting of mistreatments, knowledge, attitudes, experience, elder care.

    Abstract [en]

Social work is a wide term but often presented as the form of activities done by public welfare organisations. This study aims to present an analys of social work done by the Church of Sweden congregations. The study uses a discourseanalys perspectiv to study local congregations’ instructional documents that describe their diaconia. The result shows that social work in diaconia is characterized by different hegemonies and conflicts of understanding and practices. The study shows how church of Sweden formulation can be influenced by history and political and ideological issues as well as economical issues for the church. The author means that we need more studies of how social work is understood by other welfare actors in Sweden in order to develop a deeper understanding of social work.

Autonomy and control in everyday life in care of older people in nursing homes2014Ingår i: Journal of Housing for the Elderly, ISSN 0276-3893, E-ISSN 1540-353X, Vol. 28, nr 1, s. 41-62Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Self-control and autonomy are not guaranteed when people age and are in need of help from others, especially in institution-based housing. This occurs despite the fact that it is a generally accepted belief that care should be delivered with the greatest possible degree of independence and autonomy. This article discusses older people's experiences with and the opportunities for autonomy in institution-based housing. Through focus group interviews and observations, the daily lives of residents at two nursing homes in Sweden were studied through a comparative approach using the theoretical framework of organizational culture. Three themes emerged showing how autonomy was not a reality for the residents. The first theme revealed an ambivalent mission, indicating ambiguity as to whether the nursing home was a place to live in or a place in which to be cared for. The second theme was symbolic power, which encompassed the staff's power embedded in the organization. The third theme was the ageist approach to care, which was noted in the way staff considered the residents to be old people who were unable and unwilling to strive for autonomy. The three themes were embedded in the organizational culture and were created and recreated in the interaction between residents and staff. A key question for further research is how to change the culture to strengthen the residents’ autonomy.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the protruding school concept NPF-säkring at the public school Källbrinksskolan in Sweden. Pupils with neuropsychiatric disabilities are particularly at risk to not reach the goals of the education and to have high school absence, which can lead to social exclusion later in life. The school in this study are well-known through Swedish media and claim that they have a solution to the challenges the Swedish school system face today therefore they have formed their concept specifically to the pupils with neuropsychiatric disabilities. The aim of this study was to perform a case-study to examine what the concept implies, it’s main logics and how it affects the institution. Using triangulation while studying various documents connected to the school concept, as well as one observation at the school after school hours, five main logics of the school concept became distinguishable. The analysis were divided into two parts where the first part focus on the main logics of the concept analyzed through Universal design of learning as a theoretical perspective and the second part consists of the theory of the Institutions three pillars to understand the institutional function and its relation to its context of the society. As a conclusion it came apparent that the main logics consists of physical environment, flexible structure, relational approach, encouragement for students' self-determination and overall approach at the school. The institutional function of the concept is distinctly connected to the increased awareness regarding the consequences of neuropsychiatric disabilities throughout society and by developing a new school concept, the institution there-by question the traditional Swedish school-system.

    Abstract [sv]

The Role of Place Attachment in Developing Emotional Solidarity With Residents2018Ingår i: Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, ISSN 1096-3480, E-ISSN 1557-7554, Vol. 42, nr 7, s. 1058-1066Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As the body of work concerning emotional solidarity between residents and tourists continues to grow within the tourism literature, little focus has been placed on how the setting factors into such relationships. Using the Osun Osogbo Sacred Grove (a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Nigeria) as a study site, this research examines the role visitors’ attachment to the place plays in explaining their perceived solidarity with area residents. From confirmatory factor analysis, a measurement model was established, which revealed strong psychometric properties for the two place attachment factors (i.e., place identity and place dependence) and the three emotional solidarity factors (i.e., feeling welcomed, emotional closeness, and sympathetic understanding). Structural equation modeling demonstrated that each of the place attachment factors explained a high degree of variance (e.g., R2 ranging between 45% and 54%) in visitors’ emotional solidarity with residents. Implications and future research opportunities are offered within the close of the article.

    Abstract [sv]

    ABSTRACT

    D-uppsats i sociologi

    Abstract [sv]

    ABSTRACT

    C-uppsats i sociologi

Policing Borders through Cooperation in the Baltic Sea Area2015Ingår i: Differences, Inequalities and Sociological Imagination. Abstract book. 12th Conference of the European Sociological Association., 2015, s. 1548-1549Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the collaboration project Turnstone that is partly funded by the EU. The project is a joint collaboration among border organizations in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden, aiming at preventing trans-boundary criminality. The abolition of EU internal borders and the implementation of the Schengen regime have entailed intensified efforts of controlling European borders and border crossings. Borders previously guarded by passport controls must now be monitored through border officers relying on international cooperation. The present study focuses on how officers collaborate in their day-to-day management of border guarding, taking into consideration the different social and cultural backgrounds of the project participants. To these ends, this qualitative study is based on empirical material gathered from interviews with, and field observation sessions of officers working at the Baltic Sea border agencies. The preliminary findings suggest that, although collaboration is burdened with bureaucratic difficulties, there is a common understanding of purpose among the project participants. These border officers’ common declared objective is to fight criminality and create a safer Europe. However, the participants, possessing different organizational and cultural backgrounds, have to adapt to and adopt a common language (in officers’ terms EU-English), common schemes of categorizing (inside-outside distinctions), and develop a sense of trust and identity. Collaboration, it is claimed by the informants, is best achieved through getting involved in everyday practices, working side by side, and spending free time together, rather than through following bureaucratic rules and regulations.

Freedom of Movement: Passengers´ Experiences of Safety and Border control in the Baltic Sea Area2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Project Turnstone is a collaborative project funded in part by the European Commission. The project is an initiative by the Stockholm Police. The purpose of the project is to improve day-to-day cooperation between border officers in the Baltic Sea region, decrease trans-boundary criminality, and increase security for passengers in the Baltic Sea area without compromising freedom of movement. Within the framework of Project Turnstone, the purpose of this study is to map and analyse how travellers experience, interpret, and define freedom of movement in the northern part of the Baltic Sea region. This qualitative study is based on empirically gathered material, including field interviews and fieldwork observations at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport in Sweden, a Tallink Silja Line ferry between Stockholm and Riga in Latvia, and a Tallink Silja Line ferry between Stockholm and Tallinn in Estonia. The findings of this study suggest that many passengers are positive regarding the idea of freedom of movement in Europe but are scared of threats from outside of Europe. Several interviewees viewed Sweden and the northern parts of Europe as safe and mostly identified threats as coming from outside of Europe. Passengers generally identified political and collective threats, such as terrorism and cross-border criminality, but did not mention airplane or ferry accidents as possible risks. Freedom of movement is described as a potential risk for society and passengers, thereby placing risk in a larger societal context. Nevertheless, all but three of 200 interviewed passengers claimed that they felt safe during their travels, though many also added that they might feel safer if there were consistent passport controls regarding all travellers. The respondents in this study construct safety by distinguishing themselves from others outside of Europe. Passengers emphasized that freedom of movement is positive for personal gain because it is easier for EU citizens to travel in Europe, but at the same time it is regarded as facilitating the entry of potential threats into the EU.

Project Turnstone: Successful Collaboration and Collaboration Obstacles in Police, Border, and Coast Guard Cooperation2015Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Project Turnstone is a collaborative project funded in part by the European Commission. The project is an initiative by the Stockholm Police. Collaborating partners in the project are the Swedish Coast Guard, Region Northeast; the Helsinki Police; the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard District; the Police and Border Guard Board in Estonia; the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia; and the State Border Guard Service at the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania. The aim of this project is to decrease trans-boundary criminality and improve day-to-day cooperation between border officers in the Baltic Sea region. This study analyses this collaborative project, especially the intelligence and operative joint activities conducted during the implementation of Project Turnstone. What is unique about the Turnstone model is the implementation of the operative action week, during which officers have the chance to exchange, share, and cooperate with immediate action in the same office using their own information channels. The purpose of the study is to map and analyse how the staff of the different organizations experience, understand, and define successful cooperation and the collaboration obstacles encountered during cooperation with neighbouring organizations. The study is qualitative and based on ethnographically gathered material, including field observations at the different border agencies and qualitative interviews. A total of 73 interviews were conducted with border officers, police officers, border guards, and coast guard officers from the participating organizations. The interviewed officers view Project Turnstone as a rare opportunity for close, personal cooperation through which officers can build strong police, border, and coast guard networks and increase and strengthen previous cooperative practices. This cooperation is possible due to colocation and interpersonal interactions in which officers can learn about each other’s organizational practices, establish trust, and achieve the same goals. On the other hand, language and communication difficulties, differences in national legislation, and fear that the opportunities for joint action weeks and close cooperation will diminish after the termination of Project Turnstone were raised as obstacles to collaboration. Nonetheless, interviewed officers shared a common sense of purpose and motivation and viewed close interpersonal cooperation as the best way of protecting the EU and Schengen area from criminality in the Baltic Sea area.

    Abstract [en]

In 2014-2015 a European collaborative project called Turnstone (partly funded by the European commission) was implemented to increase control of European borders in the Baltic Sea area and to diminish trans-boundary criminality such as the smuggling of stolen goods and human trafficking. The purpose of the project is also to increase cooperation between border, police and coast guard officers in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden. The officers argue that the abolition of internal borders and the implementation of the Schengen regime in the EU has led to increased efforts to control and monitor borderlands and border crossings. The border officers must rely on cooperation to perform their duties of border guarding and hence must change their methods of working. This is a qualitative study based on empirically gathered material such asfield interviews and fieldwork observations at the different border agencies. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the staff of the different organizations define successful collaboration and what collaboration obstacles they have identified during the implementation of the cooperation project. The findings suggests that the border officers re-negotiate spatial and cultural identities to make cooperation possible. The idea of common northern European historical identity is described as important for successful cooperation. At the same time, language and communication difficulties, differences in work practices and national legislation, differences in status and different areas of interest are seen as collaboration obstacles. However, the border officers are united in their views and efforts to protect EU territory and Schengen space from criminal activity.

Purpose:The purpose of this study is to map and analyse how travellers at an airportand on ferries experience, interpret and define the risk, safety and freedom ofmovement in the northern part of the Baltic Sea region with regard to the borderagencies.Design/Methods/Approach:This qualitative study is based on empirically gathered material such asfield interviews and fieldwork observations on Stockholm’s Arlanda airport inSweden, and a Tallink Silja Line ferry running between Stockholm and Riga inLatvia. The study’s general starting point was an ethno-methodologically inspiredperspective on verbal descriptions along with an interactionist perspective whichconsiders interactions expressed through language and gestures. Apart from thisstarting point, this study focused on the construction of safety as particularlyrelevant components of the collected empirical material.Findings:The study findings suggest that many passengers at the airport and on theferries hold positive views about the idea of the freedom of movement in Europe, but are scared of threats coming from outside Europe. The travellers created andre-created the phenomenon of safety which is maintained in contrast to others, inthis case the threats from outside Europe.Originality/Value:The passengers in this study construct safety by distinguishing against theothers outside Europe but also through interaction with them. The passengersemphasise that the freedom of movement is personally beneficial because it iseasier for EU citizens to travel within Europe but, at the same time, it is regardedas facilitating the entry of potential threats into the European Union.

This study deals with the concept of ’integration’. Starting from the concept of reality as socially and linguistically constructed, it is an attempt to see how lingual constructions and perceptions affect the official structures of society and vice versa. The main purpose is to compare the different meanings integration has in a sociological context and in a political one. Further, the purpose is to see how the relationship between the sociological and political concepts affects the integrational work in the Swedish County Administrative Boards, and which consequences these effects might have. The study is carried out with ethnographic methods, i.e. participant observation and textual analysis, in a specific County Administrative Board, focusing mainly on its policy and strategy for integrational work. The results are that the main differences between the sociological and political definitions of integration lie in their extent of meanings. The sociological definitions contain many different meanings which sometimes contradict each other. The political ones however are more fixed and limited in their scope. The goal of the integrational politics is not always clear and this affects the practical work. Other problems are that the political as well as practical integrational definitions are limited to certain groups during certain conditions. The consequences of these problems can be that certain groups are left out of the integrational process, that some of the factors of integration are neglected and that immigrants, being the designated group in need of integration, are stigmatized.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine; how the Swedish high school handles the social phenomena of cyber bullying from the prospective of the high school counselor. By this study, I wanted to gain an understanding of the variables that affects how the Swedish high school chooses to deal with cyber bullying amongst their students. The study is based on a qualitative approach, using eight semi-structured interviews when interviewing the high school counselors. The empirical material from the interviews is analyzed by using the New-Institutional Theory and the concept of knowledge. The results indicates that the counselors finds the phenomena of cyber bullying not to be a new problem and that the lack of knowledge and well functioning methods in the society is affecting how the high school detects, handles and prevents cyber bullying. The result also indicates that it is going to take time for effective methods to be develop based on the complexity of detecting and handling cyber bullying.

Omsorgsgivares känsla av sammanhang inom äldreomsorgen i skuggan av New Public Management: En kvantitativ studie i socialt arbete2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study is about the upcoming challenge Sweden face with a population that grows older and in need of elderly care. The challenge lies in that municipality, as it is today, won’t have the personnel to care for the elders. The study presents two problematic factors that need change for the municipality to be able to guarantee reasonable living standards according to social laws. The first factor is the decreasing profession attractiveness that makes it hard to employ personnel. The second factor, which the study focuses on, is the fact the caregivers are overrepresented in the social insurance office statistics of personnel on sick leave. We choose to focus on the caregiver’s work environment to get a perspective on the problem. To be more exact the study focuses on finding a covariance between experienced New Public Management and Sense of coherence. Our second focus is to see if there is an underlying relation between the experienced New Public Management reforms and the three parts of Sense of coherence; meaningfulness, comprehensibility and manageability. A third focus is to see if the relationship is influenced by the caregivers’ age and work experience.

Our main findings are that experienced New Public Management has both positive but mainly negative effect on caregivers’ sense of coherence and therefore on caregiver’s health. Our conclusion is therefore that New Public Management can be seen as a factor for care givers high ratings in the social security offices statistics over sick leave from work.

    Abstract [sv]

Better Passing Waste: First Step to Cultivate Pro-environmental Behaviour for Chinese Individuals2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

With the economy developing in China, there is an intense struggle between industrial development and environmental sustainability where improving the individuals’ performance upon waste disposal is one of the crucial aspirations. The main concern for the Chinese government to address the phenomenon is to cultivate the individuals’ habits to classify domestic waste. Although this is a complicated field involved in long-term behaviour change, the author believes that small attempts can gradually affect the people and finally make a big difference. For a stronger impact in society, the Chinese Post-90sgenerationwas selected to be the pilots for this project outcome. To seek for the potential opportunities, the research was conducted to understanding how they view the phenomenon and what are their perceptions and expectations. Social-demographic factors, external factors, and internal factors of recycling and pro-environmental behaviour were all evaluated by the respondents for determining the most influencing factors for waste classification. Moreover, their response towards purchasing factors and preferred ideas helped target the top three among the six concept proposals generated from mind mapping. The opinions and feedback from the individuals and two recycling companies in China and Sweden instructed the concept selection. The final concept was outlined in a plan which is named “Restart” for further implementation. The “Restart” means to restart the waste’s life and restart people’s lifestyles, which will bring life into a new journey. The “Restart” Plan visualized how the social actors are involved and supervised by each other for the effort put into practice. This enables the surrounding actors to facilitate the individuals’journey for dispose of the waste, which in return connects the individuals more close to other actors for further development. Since the concept developed is a universal service, it can be adapted for all the generations.

Negativity hurts your style?: A study of leaders' negative emotions and their leadership style2014Ingår i: International Journal of Work Organisation and Emotion, ISSN 1740-8938, E-ISSN 1740-8946, Vol. 6, nr 4, s. 327-337Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between leaders' negative emotions and leadership styles. Faculty members at a Swedish university between 1995 and 2007 were surveyed. Members who had worked at the same institution the entire period provided a total of 48 assessments regarding the styles and emotions of their leaders (deans). The results show that some negative emotions and leadership styles are related. For an organisation to perform well (e.g., in terms of work environment), leaders should consider managing their emotions.

    Abstract [en]

Accessibility is mostly understood and defined by law and practice. The concept therefore needs to be problematized and deepened by those whom it actually concerns; students with disabilities. The aim of this study was to examine how students with disabilities are experiencing accessibility and inaccessibility in higher education in Sweden. More specifically its aim was to get access to students’ narratives about accessibility and inaccessibility as well as what the concepts meant for them. The empirical material was collected by using narrative method and interviews with ten respondents. The main result showed that inaccessibility often leads to exclusion in several ways. Furthermore, the results indicate that exclusion has a big influence on a persons’ identity, both a persons’ chosen identity as well as enforced identities. The study showed that the concept accessibility is mostly associated with the support methods offered in higher education. The analysis was based on two different kinds of analytic methodologies; one including coding and creating adequate themes based on the empirical material and the second was focusing on my part in creating the narratives and the respondents’ identities. The conclusions were that the concept accessibility is more profound than we usually think when we speak about accessibility. It does not only intend physical accessibility such as narrow bathrooms and heavy doors, but also support and accountability from teachers, individual adjustments and more knowledge about how to meet students with disabilities. The conclusions include that methods that aim to promote accessibility such as UDL and SEd can be used more frequently in Swedish universities.

Prevention work among youths in Fundación Senda De Libertad in Nicaragua2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to see how Fundación Senda De Libertad works in a preventive manner with youths who have social difficulties in Dario, Nicaragua. This study has utilised qualitative method, in order to gain adequate and sufficient information. The analysis of data has been gathered through an ethnographic perspective were observations and qualitative interviews have been used. This study shows how youths are affected with different social problems because of the number of risk factors that surround their environment. The organisation’s preventive works is done by going out and teach in schools, society and churches about self-esteem, sex and relationships, drug abuse and so forth. Conclusions show that many youths are unable to affect their own future and will therefore spend their time committing criminal actions, doing drugs and so forth. Fundación Senda De Libertad therefore works to support in order for them to become active participants in society. This will also help them make changes in the future of the general society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Sammanfattning

    Titel:
