Nyheternas födelse: En kvantitativ undersökning av källor till lokala nyheter i lokaltidningar2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to study the origin of the local news in local newspapers. Do the news originate mostly from the police, the municipality, from press releases or from the reporters own ideas? We also wanted to find out what kind of content predominated in texts with its origin in press releases respectively the reporters own ideas. Of course we also wanted to find out if there were any similarities or differences between the two studied newspapers.

We used a type of constructed week, but with non random selection instead of random. We chose one of each weekday the newspapers were published and studied the news covered in the papers that specific day. We talked over the phone with the news editors and the reporters and simply asked them about the origin of each news text separately.

The results showed that every fourth text originates from the police, and that police news often ends up as news items rather than articles. We also came to the conclusion that local newspapers use fewer press releases than earlier research has shown. Only one sixth of the news studied originates from press releases, which is less than we thought it would be. News with its origin in advertisements was less often found.

News with its origin in the reporters own ideas deal with various subjects. A text that is written on the basis of a press release on the other hand is often about some kind of event and has almost always a very positive tone. We could not notice any remarkable difference between the two studied newspapers.

Nyhetsradio: Om skillnaderna i korta riksnyhetssändningar mellan två kommersiella radiostationer och public serviceradion.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this BA-thesis was to learn the differences in news broadcasts between one public service radio channel and two commercial radio channels. To do this we used a quantitative analysis method to examine the content of the news broadcasts and then we conducted in-depth interviews with several people working with the different radio channels using a qualitative research interview method to learn their views on news and news broadcasting.

We measured the differences between the channels in six areas: subject, headline, news presentation, gender, advertising and sources.

Our two main theories were normative theory and media logic.

The results found that there were several major differences between the public service radio channel and the two commercial radio channels. Apart from several important differences in the six measured categories we also found that the sound and tone in the public service radio channel was very different from the two commercial radio channels.

We also found the public service radio channels news broadcasts to be more serious than the two commercials ones’.

Motivation för kreativitet: - En studie om hur ledare kan påverka produktiviteten i svenska medieproducerande företag2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the mid 1900s the organizational perspective in media producing companies has changed. The focus has shifted from just being a laborer to the person behind the effort. The most important for an efficient and smooth organization is the motivation of the employees and the social working environment. Former research argues that managers must be coaches and that crucial factors for the survival of organizations are creativity, innovation and adaptability. With this study we investigate what motivates employees to use their creative skills. We also examine the leader’s importance concerning motivation and how this could lead to a more pleasant and productive organization. The focus is on media producing companies to obtain the media management perspective. The method we have chosen is qualitative research interviews. We have interviewed three leaders in three different media producing companies. We have used questionnaires where staff members were asked questions about their motivation, creativity, communication and experience of leadership. The analysis is based on our collected data and earlier research in this field. Our conclusions are that employees with careers in media producing organizations have many factors that affect motivation and creativity at work. Leaders have great influence and significant impact on these factors. Managers and people with leadership positions need an understanding and awareness of the employee’s whishes and their demands of the executives and the organization. To have a continuous assessment of employee satisfaction and their wishes is very effective. To educate both new and existing managers of the factors which affect the employees could be a winning concept.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

    Abstract [en]

We are becoming more interested in furnishing in our homes, and there is big opportunities with Virtual 3D, which makes this project relevant for the time we live in. The project is about making a first prototype of a furnish-able 3D environment with integrated user friendly interface to be trailed by Mio for use in their shops. The prototype builds on two demonstration movies of the application where the interface and the users interaction options has been visualized in a standard LCD computer monitor and are synchronized with a 3D environment showing in an auto stereoscopic display. The interface was designed to be user friendly so that Mio´s customer themselves should be able to use the application and with help of special 3D-monitors and rendering techniques the environment should be experienced as in reality. The project started with a feasibility study with interviews and research. Theories taken as the basis for the project were about usability, virtual reality and how to find the right users. Theories around usability together with a scenario made it possible to develop the interface from a user friendly point of view. The prototype has been presented to users, the result indicates that there was a big interest for both the customers of Mio and the employees of Mio in Kalmar. The result from the presentation also contributed to information aiding development of the application in the future. Even the usability was improved by the results of the presentation. The 3D environment that was made contained a depth dimension and according to the user results, it could be described as a real experience.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to investigate young people's vision of clothes as a means of communication. Focus lies on what message the clothing we have on sends out and how they are interpreted by our surroundings. Do other people interpret us the way we intend to through our clothes? The theoretical frame of reference that applies is Thomas Ziehe’s theories about Clothing and Identity, Anthony Giddens’ Reflexive Identity Processes and the Uses and Gratification’s theory. The researches were carried out with a comprehensive questionnaire survey among high school students, at Lars Kaggskolan in Kalmar, with an associated image, and two personal interviews. The results showed that young people in general do not want to stand out from the quantity and they often describe their clothing style as ordinary, normal, and fashion conscious. Young people ascribe other people stereotypes on the basis of their clothing. There are many factors that play a part in the choice of clothing we do. Everything from media, group belonging to past experiences has a great meaning in the context.

Lokal Nätverkssäkerhet - experimentell studie av Microsoft Network Access Protection2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

E-handelsbarhet: En designteori skapad för e-handel2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Universal Design is a well established methodology with the fundamental purpose of designing products to be usable for as wide audience as possible, without the need of special adjustment to suit the individual. In this essay, Universal Design has had a clear influence in both the process and the result. The choice to use Universal Design as methodology in this usability evaluation, has essentiallv to do with the target audience.

As a part of the design process of MyTobii C8 has Tobii Technology ask for a usability evaluation. MyTobii C8 is an 8" touch screen computer with a windows based operating system which will initiate the software MyTobii C-Series Control. MyTobii C-Series Control is the control panel for MyTobii C8, whose interfaces constitute the platform for various modificarion of the unit. The interface of MyTobii C-Series Control is also the interface being evaluated. Because of the target audience being persons with different motoric and cognitive disabilities and theirs assistances, it is of great important that the interface is suitable for as many people as possible. With user tests, designed and analyzed with the help of Universal Design, different usability problems has been  identified and solved. Among the usability problems encountered the most vital has been the size and placement of the interactive parts and the physical interaction with the unit.

Studentrekrytering: det bortglömda kapitlet inom eventkommunikation2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Student recruitment is a subject that seems to be forgotten in the theory of event communication. Yet the area has some specific reoccurring features. Our purpose was to examine these specific features and how to work with these in the best way, and also see how to get the most out of the event communication to the young at event and fairs. Special features we have looked at are the student ambassadors ands their impact, the meaning of a give-away and also if there are any essential factors to get in contact with the young at fairs and events, and if new technology had an important role to play in the area.

Our research has been inductive, and therefore, we have created our own theory and reflected it to the larger topic of event communication and its theories. Our research method has been triangular, both quantitative and qualitative; interviews with those who work with student recruitment, and surveys to young people in upper secondary school.

Our study showed the importance of student ambassadors and their specific task to be nice, friendly and outgoing. In comparison, the give-away isn't as important. It mainly has a remembering function and can also make interaction easier. We also found that different events are needed to fill different requirements, meanings and purposes. Information is also important; both to create awareness about the events and fairs, but also information at the event and fairs. This information should first and foremost be through a course catalogue, but also information about the school and the life as a student is important. Regarding to new technology it has a secondary meaning, and shouldn't be over-emphasized.

    Abstract [en]

My study is focused on one organization with is Unicef, the organization that is workning on a UN mission. The mission is about children's rights and Unicef has brought children's actions since 1946.The purpose of this essay was to research whether the images can be used alone or as a complement to the text that the communication organizations use. By examining the way images are used, I hoped to be able to deduce the results of image use. I study if the effect out messages with only pictures will be more effective than the message in which the verbal mixed with the non-verbal.Theoretical part of this essay has a communication perspective. The essay is structure by tree elements, non-verbal communication, mass communication and intercultural communication. With these elements, or keywords, have I interpret UNICEFs communications through two media channels, internet and TV.The methodology I have chosen is qualitative method with a hermeneutic approach. I have carried out three qualitative interviews with women within the organization and one group interview consisting of four persons. I have also observation a qualitative media observation of charity gala on TV4.     My conclusions were that non-verbal communication is most likely more effective as a tool too the verbal instead of the only communication. I also got the conclusion that UNICEF communicate with people thought picture that’s gives hope for the future.

Försjunken i den digitala spelvärlden: ett forskningsarbete om inlevelse i first-person shooters2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The term immersion is widely used in the video game industry, but there is still a lack of signs on what immersion really is, or if people are using the term with the same meaning behind it. This paper describes previous research relating to the subject but also what gamers think about immersion, and what different factors that they deem important to focus on when creating an immersive digital video game in the first-person-shooter genre. With research of previous work in the field and a survey on immersion showed that immersion can be seen in three different levels: engagement, engrossment and total immersion. This research paper confirms previous research in the field and moves the research of immersion in first-person shooters forward, where immersion is governed by the four pillars of game elements: aesthetics, game mechanics, story and technology but is also highly influenced by the gamers personality, mentality and attitude towards the game the gamer is playing. The research paper also indicates other elements which can enhance or limit the feeling of immersion in FPS.

"They lie, slant and make bias" - or?: A qualitative study of sources in the local newspaper Jönköpings-Posten.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to examine what people who had been interviewed and quoted in a local newspaper feel about being interviewed and what they think of the published article. Our aim was also to make a comparison of “known” sources and “unknown” sources.

The main issues were: How do the sources of a local newspaper perceive that they are being treated in the actual interview? What do the sources think of the published article in which they are quoted? Do they trust media and journalists in general? Do the opinions differ between those who are used to being interviewed and those who are unfamiliar with the situation?

This study was carried out through qualitative interviews with respondents who have been quoted in a local newspaper in Jönköping, Jönköpings-Posten. Articles were selected from three days in November. The articles should be based on one or more interviews and had to be large. At least one person should be quoted more than once in the selected article. In total 30 interviews were made.

The study showed that the sources overall were pleased with the article and the way they were being presented. Nor was there anything to complain about when it came to the journalist’s behaviour. But almost everyone expressed certain scepticism when it came to confidence in media in general. However, most of the persons interviewed had an understanding of the ways that journalists work. We were surprised that the result was so positive and also that the people that were not used to being interviewed were more positive than those who often appear in the local press.

Mediebilder av två organisationer i relation till"news management"2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to show and explain how and why Swedish young people use Youtube.

We conducted a written survey, asking approximately 120 students between the ages 16 and 18. The survey was carried out in the classrooms in order to receive answers from as many students as possible. We then interviewed six of them to gain further knowledge of why they use Youtube the way they do.

The survey showed that Youtube is used by all of the students and very frequently by most of them. Comedy and music videos are by far the most popular genres that are viewed. In most cases watching video clips on Youtube is a social activity, often combined with both talking about clips and sending and receiving video links to and from friends. Very few upload videos of their own.

Explanations as to why they watch video clips on Youtube can be found in the uses and gratifications theoretical approach. We found that the primary uses of Youtube seem to be motivated by the need for entertainment and filling time. There is also an important social context to the viewing since many of the students talk with their friends and classmates about what they have seen.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this BA-thesis was to study how three daily Swedish newspapers use a specific type of exemplars, which are recognized by a number of attributes. A photograph of the person that is interviewed always illustrates this type of exemplars and at least two persons are asked the same question.    The three newspapers that have been compared in this study each represent one of the major types of Swedish newspapers: morning press, tabloids and local press. By using a quantitative content analysis, one month was examined in all three newspapers in the year of 1997 and 2007.  Two of the theories that have been central in the thesis are Colin Sparks model of tabloidization, which demonstrates the process of tabloidization and McQuail′s description of commercialization.  The results of the study indicate that there are many similarities between the three newspapers use of exemplars. However, there are some differences when it comes to frequency and function. Noteworthy is that the newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” did not publish a single exemplar the first year of the study, 1997. Ten years later the very same paper published 15 exemplars during the month of examination.

KESHIKI: korridorkoncept och sittmöbel till Boda Borg i Karlskrona2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Revidering av rockdatabas2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Svenskt Rockarkiv is an organization located in Hultsfred, Sweden. Its goal is to collect and document the history of Swedish rock music. The archive contains several types of documentation, such as audio recordings, photographs, posters, video recordings and books representing Swedish rock music history. In order to store information about the audio recordings in the archive, Svenskt Rockarkiv uses a SQL Server 2000 database and a client application written in Microsoft.NET C# and Windows Forms. The purpose of this degree project is to audit the database and windows client, since the organization has needs of new functionality. There are also some bugs in the system that needs to be corrected. The result of the audit states that the database needs to be extended with additional tables and some structural changes to handle the new demands of the system. The poorly designed architecture of the windows client causes performance issues, and these issues are believed to increase with the size of the database. Based on the audit a suggestion of changes to the system is presented, with emphasis on overall performance, usability and preparations for future development. Structural changes to the database are presented as well as a new distributed client-server solution. By using the .NET Remoting technique the business logic is placed in a separate physical layer increasing performance and scalability, and making the system easy to extend with future functionality. Finally the outcome of the system development is presented with a database model and an implementation of the new client.

Konstruktionen av kvinnan i moderna komedier: En kvalitativ analys av kvinnans humoruttryck i 2000-talets komedier2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This study intends to analyse how female characters are constructed in major comedies. The study consists of three modern films, all produced after the turn of the millennium. To give our work certain relevance, it was necessary to limit the materials to this decade. We chose early on, in the beginning of our study, to concentrate on American comedies, based on the cultural impact American society has on to our own.

To conduct our analysis we turned to the qualitative method for help and guidance. Further more, the study is based on a number of theories regarding cinema and gender such as the feminist film theory, representation theory and theories on humour.

We found that little progress has been made when it comes to equality between the sexes in cinema, at least in regards of humour and comedic expressions. Women are still expected to sit laugh and giggle when men make jokes but can not be expected to be funny themselves. It is still norm for a woman to gain status by looking pretty and portraying an image of gracefulness, rather than showing she has a sense of humour. Female humour is accepted to a much larger extent in closed groups such as her immediate friends or in the family. When in the company of a man, however, she is not allowed such freedoms.

We also came to the somewhat upsetting conclusion that we more often laugh at the female characters than with them. Their comedic function seems to be to make fools of themselves in order to make the audience laugh, in contrast to showing a measure of intelligence or humour.

Regalskeppet Kronan: Utveckling av en interaktiv dykmodell2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The project started by commission of the regional museum of Kalmar. The goal was to develop a first prototype of an interactive 3-dimensional diving model of the site of wreckage of the man-of-war Kronan. The aim of this model were two folded. First it was supposed to be a more modern part of the regional museums webpage and its physical exhibition where visitors of the museum can navigate and turn the model around in real time and get a picture of how it looks at the site of the wreackage. Part of the museum’s annual report states that their aim is to gain 20.000 more visitors during the year of 2008. A more modern way of exhibiting their objects in the museum could help with this. The validity of the project was confirmed by a study of the regional museums annual report. The second aim of the diving model was to facilitate the planning the excavation of the site of the wreckage for the divers by on an early stage of the planning being able to distribute and discuss the wreckage among each other. This was formely done by looking at and discussing video footage taken at the wreckage. The project was divided into several steps. First, the term stakeholder was introduced to get a better understanding of who the user for the development of the 3d-model was. The stakeholders that were put forward and were deemed the most suitable were visitors at the museum, in the form of “tourists and school children”, and “divers at the site of the wreckage”. These were the two stakeholder groups who were seen as those who would have the most direct influence of the interaction with the 3d model. To further encircle the users of the upcoming 3d model, the method personas was used to represent the visitors at the museum and schoolchildren. Interviews was used for the stakeholder group “divers at the wreckage”. Representing the divers was Lars Einarsson who is in charge of the excavation of the wreckage. The production of the 3d model was done by making of conceptual models and footage from the Kronan exhibition. These were the basis for the techniques for modeling that were used within 3d Studio Max. These models also worked as an original while modeling. During the production phase of the 3d model several things was taken into consideration; modeling with as low complexity as possible, a realism in the 3d model by adding objects that are actually in place at the wreckage and natural lighting of the scene. To aid with the lighting filmed footage from the site of the wreckage were used. The interaction with the 3d model was deemed to be made using a second hand application. To see to it that the best application for this was used, a comparison between Eon Raptor and Design Review 2008 was made. This was done on the basis of both internal testing and a comparison of the two programs system requirements. The final choice was Design Review 2008 mostly on the basis of a higher degree of usability and technical availability. After the model was implemented from 3d Studio Max to Design Review 2008 a heuristic evaluation was made to see to it that the basic functioning of the model was satisfying. The usability principles that were used were a modified version of Jacob Nielsens usability principles. These were produced by comparing and synthesizing Nielsens and Jef Raskins theories for good interaction. The result of the heuristic evaluation was deemed satisfying and the final application was considered having good usability concerning the interaction.
