    Abstract [en]

    Due to devastating fires in several Swedish cities between 1838 and 1843, timber was not allowed to be used any more in bearing constructions for buildings with more than two floors. In 1994, the building code was changed towards functional requirements and timber could be used again in multi storey applications. However, this 150 year lasting prohibition let to the fact that building with timber in such applications barely developed. The market and the industry were used to steel and concrete, and mostly still are. Therefore, a strategy for more wood in construction was launched and implemented by the Swedish government in 2004, a.o. aiming at increasing the competition of building materials and -techniques. Here, prefabrication in an industrialized way was highlighted. Additionally, more Swedish wood should be processed domestically to save and provide jobs, but also to meet environmental concerns about reducing the CO2 footprint (Schauerte 2009).

    Regarding the implementation of that strategy, the Minister for Communications and Regional Policy in the Ministry of Industry, Employment and Communications, Ulrika Messing, stated that regional innovators and entrepreneurs would be of utmost impor- tance to reach the set up goals. Here, Växjö municipality comes into play.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim with this report is to show how an increase of the thickness of insulating in a house influences the costs and the energy consumption for the insulation in a life cycle perspective and for the usage stage of the house. An optimization of the insulation on an ongoing construction project in Växjö, Limnologen has been carried out in the study. Total energy consumption for the insulation’s life cycle has been taken from earlier accomplished life cycle assessments (LCA). The house's heat need has been calculated on the basis of information from blueprints and contacts with persons in connection to Limnologen. An equation has been formulated in order to find a theoretical optimum for the insulating thickness regarding total energy consumption, carbondioxide and economy. The result of the optimization for total energy consumption shows that optimum lies at the the double thickness for ceilings and foundation, and triple for the walls. For carbondioxide and the economy the result is more depending on the house's heating source. District heating with biomass fuel is more environmentally friendly and economic today compared with fossil fuel. It means that houses that are oil heated should be insulated considerably more. In this study a compilation of some factors have been made, such as energy, carbondioxide and economy which makes it easier to compare them. Insulating to the calculated optimum is not relevant because the optimum is a theoretical value and does not take into consideration structure solutions and other problems that can arise. On the other hand the optimization curve shows that the profit increases rapidly at the first centimetres of additional insulation and if the structure is not affected markedly this addition would be profitable to carry out. The conclusion is that the buildings raised at Limnologen are well insulated with the presumptions of today.

    Abstract [en]

    The thesis begins with basic theory of building acoustics. A literature study is made to develop improvement options for a number of building components of the two selected measurement objects. After completion of field measurement, a composite reduction index is calculated for measured and published values. A comparison is made and improvement options are set. Analysis of the results shows that undamped air-vents makes a big negative impact on the noise reduction of the composite facade wall. For apartment separation wall it turns out that resonance occur with a "wrong" wall construction.

    Examensarbetet är en studie om möjligheter med Byggnadsinformationsmodellering (BIM) inom fastighetsförvaltning. Olika fastighetsförvaltare och mjukvarutillverkare presenteras och ger sin syn på BIM. Begreppet BIM förklaras och dessutom ges några exempel på hur mjukvaror hanterar BIM-modeller. Viktiga slutsatser från arbetet är att mjukvarorna behöver förändras och anpassas till de olika kategorier av förvaltare som är aktuella, det kommer också krävas utbildning och information till dessa. Anledningen till det är att kunskapen om BIM idag är låg bland de flesta förvaltare.

    Denna studie har utförts för att öka kunskapen om miljö- och energikrav i Sverige. Studien har utgått från en tomt i Landskrona där ett flerbostadshus kommer att byggas.

    I studien studerades vilka miljö- och energikrav som finns i Sverige. De miljöcertifieringssystem som studerats är GreenBuilding, Miljöbyggnad, BREEAM och LEED. De lågenergihus som studerats är passivhus, minienergihus och nollenergihus.

    I studien studeras även för- och nackdelar med olika stomsystem i trä. En slutsats om det bäst lämpade stomsystem för byggnaden i Landskrona dras.

    Tre typer av konstruktionslösningar tas fram för byggnaden. För dessa konstruktioner utförs energiberäkningar. Beräkningarna görs för att se vad som krävs för att uppfylla miljö- och energikrav som ställs på en nyproducerad byggnad.

    I slutet av studien rekommenderas en passande konstruktionslösning för byggnaden i Landskrona för att uppfylla kraven Miljöbyggnad Guld och passivhus.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med arbetet är att få en förståelse för moss-sedumtakets bullerdämpande egenskaper. Jag kommer även att försöka förutsäga med hjälp av akustikteori vilken utav de två olika uppbyggnadssystemen av moss-sedumtak som ger den bästa bullerdämpande effekten.

    Mätningarna kommer att bestå i att registrera ljudtrycksnivån i rummet, vid varje oktavband i frekvensområdet 125-4000 Hz. Först utan moss-sedummattan och sedan med moss-sedum mattan. Storleken på differensen i ljudnivån ger en bild av i vilket frekvensområde som ljudabsorptionen är effektivast. För att ytterliggare öka förståelsen för hur moss-sedum absorberar ljud så kommer även absorptionsfaktorn att beräknas. Utifrån resultaten kan man se en tydlig bild på hur xeroflor moss-sedum mattan absorberar i frekvenserna 125-4000 Hz. Den har sin bästa absorption i området 500-4000 Hz och i detta område så är det runt 1000 Hz som den absorberar effektivast.

     

    Om vi tittar på de två olika systemen som Veg Tech använder för att bygga upp ett sedumtak på så sker dämpningen i XMS 0-4 med hjälp av luftspalten och i system XMS 2-27 i VT-filten. Men i detta fall så är luftspalten endast 25 mm så en märkbar ökad dämpning är svårt att föreställa sig. VT-filten som används i XMS 2-27 har öppna celler och kan liknas vid mineralull, som är en bra absorbent. Min slutsats är att 10 mm VT-filt ger bättre dämpning än en luftspalt på 25 mm.

    Den traditionella båsladugården har idag utvecklats till lösdriftstallar där korna har fri tillgång till foder och liggplatser. Korna mjölkas i antingen mjölkgrop, karusell eller av en robot. För att uppnå bra termisk komfort i lösdriftsstallen så använder man sig av naturlig eller mekanisk ventilation. I detta arbete så undersöks några olika ventilationssystem som använder sig av naturlig ventilation på fem utvalda kostall för att se hur de fungerar i praktiken. Detta görs med fukt- och temperaturmätare och med rökpatroner för att se hur luften rör sig i stallet. Resultatet analyseras för att se om det är något ventilationssystem som sticker ut jämför med de andra. Beskrivning kring hur man skulle kunna gå tillväga vid en vidare utveckling av detta arbete diskuteras.

    Abstract [en]

    Constructing multi floor buildings by light weight material have increased recently. There are many advantages of using light weight material, such as wood, for the environment. However, one of the deficiencies of lightweight material is the acoustic performance. Transmission of sound and vibration through floors in multi floor buildings in wood is a drawback to be considered. There are many studies that have addressed this issue.

    It is most common to make a finite element models well as experiments in laboratory. In these studies the material properties in the FE model are probably often adjusted to correlate to the laboratory experiments, since there is a large spread in material properties found in literature.

    This thesis however tries to elaborate on the actual material properties of the included wooden elements. Dynamic testing is done to determine the spread (here spread means gap between material properties) in material properties of wooden elements.

    The materials tested are chipboards and two types of wooden beams. The examined beams are both normal wooden beams and laminated veneer lumber beams. When the dynamic behaviour is known for the wooden parts, they are assembled to two small floor systems. The floor systems consist of four beams and one wooden board. The assembly is dynamically tested in laboratory and in FE software. The FE model used the known material properties for each individual building part.

    The results from the FE model correlate well with the laboratory tests. This shows that when material properties are known a FE model can predict the real behaviour. However, the examined material properties show a large spread from beam to beam, etc and a better knowledge about the material properties of used wooden parts is needed.

    Studien undersöker konstruktiva och geometriska skillnader mellan en betong- och träregelstomme för ett fyra vånings flerbostadshus. Byggnadens konstruktionsdelar dimensionerats med hjälp av eurokoder. I brottgränstillståndet kontrolleras knäckning, stämpeltryck och horisontallast för väggar och moment- och tvärkraft samt vippning för balkar. I bruksgränstillståndet kontrolleras nedböjning för balkarna och nedböjning samt svikt och vibrationer för bjälklaget. Byggs huset med trästomme istället för betongstomme kommer dimensionerna d.v.s. tjockleken för väggar och bjälklag att öka, vilket innebär konsekvenser för planlösningen och byggnadshöjden.

    Abstract [en]

    In the middle of 20th Century, there was a significant change in the development of housing in Sweden. The change came to be called the Million house programme, where one million new and modernized houses and residential areas were erected over a ten-year period. Many of these residential areas are perceived as insecure, run down and several are today segregated.

    The purpose of this study is by development of a million house programme external environment affect segregation, with reference to the quality of the residential area. The goal is to study how the external spaces in a million house programme area can affect segregation through the development and ensuring of the outdoor environment values. The purpose and goal is achieved through literature studies, field studies and interviews. The results from the applied methods notes that the areas are worn, unkempt and scanty. Suggestions are also presented for action. In conclusion, the importance of careful management, zoning and foreclosure in the million house programme areas external spaces have an impact on segregation. However, the affects of segregation and integration depends also on other societal aspects and measures that should all be considered in the planned change of a segregated area.

    In present the building industry is focused on reaching high standard, right quality, reach shorter building times

    and this shall be done to less expense. The purpose with this study is to examine how important the

    communication is for the building process, if there is a connection between the communication and if the project

    reaches the expected goal. What meaning has the anchor to the goal image and the programs design for the

    projects chance of success. The study is found on subjective results, from the contributing building contractor

    opinions, and measures there by not the questions objective. The results of the quantitative examine in this

    study targets out that in a connection between the general communication, the goal images clearness under the

    project and the goal images fulfilment. The results even show that there is no clear connection between these

    three targets and the communication about the goal images. The study shows that the goal images do not need

    to be common and good anchor to all contractors involved in the specific project.

    Abstract [en]

    The AquaVilla CasaBona wall system currently contains the insulation material EPS, which has shown weaknesses while exposed to fire. The aim for this study was to suggest an alternative insulation material to EPS regarding fire, energy use and U-vale as well as energy use and carbon dioxide emissions for manufacturing. The purpose was that the suggested alternative insulation material should be able to be used by manufacturers in wall products as an alternative to EPS.

    In this study, four different insulation materials were examined by critically reviewing scientific articles and literature, as well as field studies and calculations with the energy calculation program VIP-energy. The insulation materials investigated were expanded polystyrene, polyurethane, polyisocyanurate and rockwool.

    The findings showed that EPS, PUR and PIR were not nearly as good as rockwool regarding fire. When manufacturing the various insulation materials, EPS gives the best results in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. EPS gives the best results regarding energy use for manufacturing when the insulation layer in the investigated wall system was 200 mm thick, but when the wall was given a U-value of 0,112 W/m2K, rockwool got the best results in this category. PUR and PIR gave the worst results regarding both energy use and carbon dioxide emissions at manufacturing. Rockwool generated the best results regarding energy use, but all of the materials met the requirements from Boverkets Byggregler.

    When comparing all the investigated characteristics of the various insulation materials, the most suitable material for an external wall was considered to be rockwool.

    Abstract [en]

    In wooden roof trusses there sometimes may occur buckling in compressed web members. In most cases in Sweden this is solved by bracing between two webs to prevent buckling of the minor axis. Sometimes it is hard to brace between webs because of lack of space. Then it is possible to nail or screw a side member on the compressed web to increase the capacity. This diploma work has examined two different ways of bracing, rectangular cross section and T-bracing, with webs 45x95 mm2. Experimental tests have been made on compression webs and examine the bracing efficiency. It is important that the bracing alternatives are easy to use with simple tools.

    Ungraded lumber were delivered to Växjö University. The Youngs modulus of the test pieces has been examined so the critical buckling load of the main member without bracing could be calculated theoretically. The lumber was conditioned to equilibrium moisture content of approximately 12 percent in a room maintained at 65 percent relative humidity and 20°C in three weeks before testing the critical buckling load.

    The experimental results show that the critical buckling load increases with a factor of 1,9 – 2,7 for the rectangular cross sections and with a factor of 2,5 – 4,0 for the T-bracing. The bracing efficiency is dependent on length, bracing alternative and type of connectors.. The bracing efficiency increases for longer webs.

    Denna rapport undersöker möjligheten för en bärande trä-glaskonstruktion att behålla sin bärförmåga under brand. En bärande konstruktion måste uppfylla särskilda krav under en brand. Rapporten sammanfattar vilka regler och krav som finns på en bärande konstruktion. Rapporten bryter ner konstruktionen och undersöker de olika materialens egenskaper. Materialens termiska egenskaper undersöks för att ta reda på om trä-glaskonstruktionen kan uppfylla brandkraven. På marknaden finns brandklassade glas. Rapporten undersöker möjligheterna att applicera brandglas i trä-glaskonstruktionen. Detta för att skydda det bärande glaset från hög temperatur.

    Glas har flera av de egenskaper som eftersöks hos ett bärande material: hög styvhet, hög hållfasthet - och är dessutom transparant! Tillsammans med rätt lim och en träram bildas väggar som klarar stora laster. Linnéuniversitetet i Växjö har forskat inom detta ämne och gjort många tester på glasväggar. Resultaten visar att en bärande glasvägg kan ha lastkapacitet för att klara en bostadslast för 3-4 våningar. Nu har möjligheterna att även klara brandkraven undersökts i ett examensarbete.

    Byggsektorn är en stor bidragande faktor till den globala miljöpåverkan. Hur stor miljöpåverkan ett byggprojekt orsakar baseras utifrån hela livscykeln. En del av livscykeln är material då materialval är ett kritiskt skede i byggprocessen. Genom att välja ett material med en miljöcertifiering som är grundad utifrån ett livscykelperspektiv kan miljöpåverkan begränsas. Till exempel Svanen är en svensk miljöcertifiering som baserar sina kriterier utifrån ett livscykelperspektiv.

    I många situationer är det ekonomin som styr materialvalet. I den här undersökningen kommer ekonomiskt begränsade materialval att jämföras med miljövänliga material. Kan miljövänliga material hålla samma budget eller hur stor blir annars prisskillnaden? Definitionen av miljövänligt kommer i den här rapporten att grundas på Svanens kriterier.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper investigates the linear elastic behavior of timber shear walls under monotonic prescribed displacement. ABAQUS© 16.4-5, is a numerical finite element software used as the primary analysis methodology.  Parameterized models are created for two shear wall specimens of different geometry concerning door and window configurations. The shear walls are simulated as solid timber framing which is mechanically connected to gypsum sheathing board through fasteners. The primary findings are the linear elastic shear force distribution of the mechanical joints. Additionally, deformations and reaction forces of the shear walls are determined. The overall horizontal shear wall behavior of each specific wall was also studied in the presence of door and window openings. The simulations indicate there is a clear deformation difference in the behaviors of the two shear walls. Furthermore, the highest shear force values of the fasteners are located around the corners of the openings. The findings are supported by other researcher’s experiments and analytical tests, timber shear wall theory and Eurocode design requirements.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper presents results from the experimental testing of load-bearing timber–glass composite shear walls and beams. Shear wall specimens measuring 1200 × 2400 mm2 manufactured with three adhesives of varying stiffness were tested. Twelve specimens with a single 10 mm thick glass pane and one specimen with an additional insulating glass unit were produced. The testing procedures involved various loading conditions: pure vertical load and different combinations of shear and vertical loading. The test results showed that the adhesive had only a minor influence on the buckling load which was the main failure mechanism. 240 mm high and 4800 mm long timber–glass beams manufactured with adhesives of different stiffness were tested. For the webs, two types of glass were used: annealed float and heat-strengthened glass, in both cases 8 mm thick panes were used. In total, 12 beams were tested in four-point bending until failure. Despite the considerable difference in adhesive stiffness, beam bending stiffness was similar. Concerning load-bearing capacity, the beams with heat-strengthened glass were approximately 50% stronger than the beams made using annealed float glass.

    Jämförelser utav dagsljusfaktor, illuminans, fönster-/golvarea och andel fönsterglas utförs. Detta görs mellan trä-glaselementet och ett konventionellt väggelement i tre typer av bostadsbyggnader.

    The natural fibrous materials are widely used as thermal insulator for building application. The thermal insulating performance of natural fibrous material are affecting by the high humidity and temperature. Due to high moisture in natural fibrous insulators, they are very susceptible for microorganisms attack as well as the reduction in the thermal insulating properties. In this work, hydrophobic surface treatment was given to the wood fibrous insulator using octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). The deposition of OTS monolayers on wood fibers surface was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and water contact angle of wood fibers measured by sessile drop method. The influence of hydrophobic treatment on hygric properties of wood fibrous insulator was characterized using especially designed double-climatic set-up. The effectiveness of hydrophobic treated wood fibers towards mould fungi growth was also examined. The hydrophobic treatment improved the hygric properties and effectiveness towards mould significantly.

    The objective of this paper is to clarify the difference between two analytical models for plastic design ofshear walls and evaluate their potential for hand calculation by comparing calculated load-bearing capacities of differentwall configurations with the corresponding ones obtained by finite element analyses. The first analytical model is basedon a true plastic lower bound concept, i.e. always fulfilling the conditions of equilibrium. The second model is based onthe assumption that the full vertical shear capacity of the wall is utilized, considering that the vertical equilibrium isalways fulfilled but disregarding that the horizontal equilibrium of the wall is not always satisfied. If the shear capacityof the stud-to-rail joints is sufficiently large, then the second model is also a true plastic lower bound method. The ratiosbetween the calculated load-carrying capacities of the two analytical models are in the range between 1.00 – 1.24 with amean value of 1.12 for the wall and load configurations studied. Results from FE simulations show that the firstanalytical method underestimates the load-carrying capacity by about 10 %, but that the method gives very stablecapacity values relative to the FE simulations. It is further evident that there is a good agreement between the secondanalytical model and the results of the FE calculations at the mean level, but that this method has a considerably highervariation in the capacity values relative to the FE-simulations. Performed tests of different wall and load configurationsshow about 30 % higher measured capacities than calculated ones. The large deviations are mainly due to differences inthe manufacturing of the specimens for the sheathing-to-framing joint tests and the specimens for the wall tests.

    Dynamical properties of a large glulam truss for a tall timber building2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    When designing a tall timber building, the accelerations due to wind loads are in many cases decisive. The parameters governing the dynamic behaviour of the building are the structure’s stiffness, damping and mass together with the loads. The first two parameters are not well-known during the serviceability limit state of timber structures generally and of timber connections specifically.

    In this study, dynamical properties of a large glulam truss, a part of the vertical and horizontal structural system in a residential six-storey timber building, are estimated from measurements made in the manufacturing plant. The timber members of the truss are joined with slotted-in steel plates and dowels. Forced vibrational test data are used to extract the dynamical properties. Finite element (FE) models, supported by the experimental results, were developed and simulations, to study the influence of the connection stiffnesses on the total behaviour, were performed. The vibration test results of measurements made on separate structural parts give valuable input to model timber structures and better possibilities to simulate the dynamic behaviour of tall timber buildings as well as the load distribution in wooden structures in the serviceability limit state.

    A multi-modal experimental approach for analysing the embedment behaviour of timber connections with steel dowels is proposed in this study. In this approach, a standard mechanical embedment test on single-dowel connections is combined with an optical measurement of surface deformations of the connection based on digital image correlation principle and an X-ray micro-computed tomography examination of the deformations in the dowel-wood interface. The latter is conducted on cylindrical cores including the dowel hole, physically extracted from the loaded specimen at three characteristic points of the load-deformation curves. The major challenge of this procedure is disrupted load transfer between the cylindrical core specimens and the external material they were plugged in for further analysis. Despite its challenges and limitations, the method revealed a potential for an unprecedented insight into the micromechanics of dowel connections and for effective correlation of the micro-level observations with the external macroscopic load-deformation characteristics.

    Abstract [en]

    In this study, dowel displacement-embedment stress relationships for different types, numbers and positions of reinforcements were experimentally investigated using a half-hole embedment test setup. Tests were performed parallel to the grain and in compression. Screws with a full or partial thread at different positions below the dowel and oriented strand board, plywood and nail plates on the loaded surfaces of the specimens, served as reinforcements. Test results underline their potential for an increased ductility of dowel-type connections. Comparison of reinforced and unreinforced specimens suggests premature failure of the unreinforced wood and consequently, an underestimation of the embedment strength as it is subsequently used in the design of dowel connections using the European yield model. This was supported by the investigation of cracks on the surface of the specimens visualized by means of a full-field deformation measurement system. It could be demonstrated that the strength in the embedment test even further increases if the reinforcement elements actively contribute to the load transfer. This property however cannot be considered as embedment strength, but represents the strength of a connection system. Test data is compared to the design equation in Eurocode 5.

    Abstract [en]

    Optimised manufacturing processes made possible the production of larger dimensions timber products, which allow for the design of remarkable structures. In the last version of the EN 1995-1-1, it seemed important to its drafters to propose design formulas to estimate stiffness of joints in accordance with the needs of that time. Aware of the technical jump that had to be managed, the proposed rules remained simple. However, simple design equations became insufficient to cope with present-day challenges, which are, e.g., related to the design of high-rise wooden buildings. In EN 1995-1-1, the resistant capacity of dowel-type timber joints is no longer determined by empirical formulas but it is based on the limit analysis proposed by Johansen (1949). This methodology however shows limits for complex joints even though many improvements have been made since its introduction (Blaß and Laskewitz 2000). In parallel with these analytical approaches, developments in computational mechanics made it possible to develop simple numerical methods (Foschi 1974, Hirai 1983), which taken even into account nonlinear phenomena. These approaches have remained unused in practical design due to their complex implementation and their high running time, at the time of their invention, while todays computational resources strongly reduced corresponding limitations. Thus, numerical modelling of connections can help engineers to fill the gaps of the EN 1995-1-1 and to cope with variability in connection design. For this purpose, dowel-type fasteners are numerically modelled as elastoplastic beams on a nonlinear foundation in engineered in wood-based products (Sawata and Yasumura 2003, Hochreiner et al. 2013). This method is called Beam-On-Foundation (BOF) modelling and shows huge potential for engineering design. The purpose of this paper is to show how this method can substitute and complement limit analysis and empirical stiffness formulas of timber joints with dowel-type fasteners.
