    Abstract [en]

In this session, Cecilia Davidsson and Magnus Eriksson from Linnaeus University in Sweden will present and critically analyze a challenging exercise for their Creative Writing students: Writing about a taboo. There ara external taboos, created by society's norms, but also internal taboos related to personal experience. In this exercise, we want the students to ask themselves: What is the worst thing I can write about? What is my taboo? Do I dare to write about it? Do I dare letting other people read the piece? The aim of the task is to get our students to test their own limits.

    Abstract [en]

How do we teach creative writing? How do we examine literary creation? Howcan we theorize the relationship between creative writing and the literarycanon? How can we make the distinction between works of art, which throughtheir aesthetic expression and content also include research, from works ofart where the creation process needs to be documented? In the long run, isthere a risk that conventionality might isolate the academy from the openartistic community? How do we assess the national perspective in relation tothe international perspective in our writing, teaching and researching?

“...så större kung och fagrare drottning har väl aldrig funnits till.”: Kvinnornas roll i fyra småländska folksagor2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

“...so greater king and more beautiful queen have possibly never existed.” The role of women in four folktales from Småland.

The Boy Who Couldn’t Grow Up: En tematisk analys av döden i J. M. Barries drama om Peter Pan2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyse the thematic purpose of death in J.M. Barries play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. Peter Pan, the Darlings and Neverland each get analysed in separate chapters, to get a fuller understanding of their relation to death. This has been done through the use of copingtheory, and comparisons to earlier myths about catabasis, Pan, and British changelings. Further support has been found through earlier works written about the subject, to deepen the understanding of death’s part in this play for children. The essay concludes that the children in the play are deathly ill – and thus Neverland and Peter Pan are representations of the afterlife, and a spirit which guides children on from this life in to the next.

Att skriva barn- och ungdomslitteratur2019Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The project “Book Dog and Astrid Lindgren” at Linnaeus University, Sweden, aims to bring children together with literature and to use dogs as a tool for this. The project seeks to arouse a desire to read by making it appealing, and to spread knowledge about children’s literature in general and Astrid Lindgren’s works in particular. It is geared towards children with difficulties in reading, writing, and speech, children with low motivation for reading, children who already find it fun to read and who are prepared to read more, and adults who are in contact with these children. The method involves the children reading aloud to a dog that makes no demands or judgements. The dog has a calming effect in a situation that is stressful for many children. The project is run in collaboration with the Swedish dyslexia association Dyslexiförbundet, the Hundsam association, and schools and libraries, primarily focusing on children aged between 6 and 13.

Chick Lit in Historical Settings by Frida Skybäck2015In: Journal of Popular Romance Studies, ISSN 2159-4473, E-ISSN 2159-4473, no 5.1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Chick lit is mostly contemporary portrayals of single women in cities. The Swedish author Frida Skybäck writes “chick lit in corsets”, that is, chick lit in a historical setting, and she writes primarily for teenage girls. Her two novels Charlotte Hassel (2011) and Den vita frun (2012) balance between chick lit jr. and romance. They can also be read as historical novels, and in my article I highlight how Skybäck has consciously played with the different genres to convey a feminist message and to strengthen young readers.

    Abstract [en]

Margareta Petersson took her doctorate in 1988 with the dissertation Indien i svenska reseskildringar 1950-1975 [India in Swedish Travel Accounts 1950-1975]. In that study Petersson problematizes travel writing as a genre and discusses whether it should be regarded as documentary or ction. Furthermore, she focuses on the picture of India that is conveyed in a number of travel accounts, how they are tied to their time, and what values and patterns of thought, here called norms, are established. In my article I proceed from part of Petersson’s analysis to study how travels to India have been described in some Swedish books for children. I consider travel literature as a genre with reference to child readers, and I examine the context in which the narratives arose. I also examine how the image of India is constructed in these accounts and how this image is coloured by the genre af liation of the narratives and the time when the story was written.
