    Abstract [en]

    This article proposes a definition of alternative news media and suggests routes for further research. It complements and extends previous conceptualizations in research on alternative media and outlines an umbrella definition of this phenomenon aimed to inspire contemporary research and scholarly debate. Previous research has been guided by a “progressive” perspective as a form of resistance against “bourgeois” hegemonic discourse. Such normative evaluations have in turn limited how the phenomenon has been studied empirically, by limiting the scope of research so that important contemporary phenomena fall outside the theoretical map. Conceptualizing alternative news media in the present hybrid and polarized media environment, we first propose a non-normative, multilevel relational definition: Alternative news media position themselves as correctives of the mainstream news media, as expressed in editorial agendas or statements and/or are perceived as such by their audiences or third-parties. This counter-hegemonic alternativeness can emerge on the macro-level of societal function, the meso-level of organizations and/or the micro-level of news content and producers. Second, demonstrating why this umbrella definition is fruitful in the changing media environment characterized by boundary struggles, crisis in legacy news media and mushrooming of alternative news outlets, we highlight research gaps and propose future research.

    Abstract [en]

    Computational techniques have transformed the journalistic approach. Journalists now have the opportunity to integrate user-statistics from the news website with their work. Singer (2011) argues that journalists seem particularly afraid of items, which they perceive as trivial or otherwise unsavory, will prove popular - potentially creating management pressures to produce more of those stories. She describes this practice as ‘‘traffic whoring’’. This phenomenon could affect journalists democratic function and their public responsibility. Through qualitative interviews we seek to answer the question: how do journalist perceive traffic whoring and how does it affect their journalistic work? Our study reveals that the interviewed journalists don’t consider themselves to be influenced by traffic whoring. On the contrary, their given statements describes the opposite. Partly due to the visibility of user-preferences, but also due to an increasing management demand to generate high numbers and statistics.

    Sedan Sverigedemokraternas inträde i den politiska debatten har det diskuterats hur medierna ska bemöta partiet. I ett brev från Jimmie Åkesson till chefredaktörer runt om i landet i samband med valet 2010 vädjade han att Sverigedemokraterna skulle bli behandlat som övriga partier. Samma år kom partiet in i riksdagen och har sedan dess fått ett allt starkare väljarstöd i främst Skåneregionen samtidigt som stödet varit svagt i framförallt Stockholm, Västerbotten och Gotland.

     

    Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka hur tidningarna gestaltade och rapporterade om Sverigedemokraterna fyra månader före valet 2014 i regionerna där partiet fick högst respektive lägst väljarstöd i samma val. Vi har gjort en kvantitativ innehållsanalys baserat på 464 artiklar från tio tidningar. Vi har analyserat fem tidningar från Skåneregionen och fem tidningar från Stockholm, Västerbotten och Gotland. Tidningarna vi undersökte som fått representera Skåneregionen var Sydsvenskan, Helsingborgs Dagblad, Skånska Dagbladet, Ystads Allehanda och Kvällsposten. Tidningarna som fått representera Stockholm, Västerbotten och Gotland var Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Aftonbladet, Västerbottens-Kuriren och Gotlands Tidningar.

     

    Resultatet visade på att det fanns små skillnader i hur de skånska och övriga tidningarna gestaltade Sverigedemokraterna. Artiklarna var till största del gestaltade ur ett spelperspektiv i regionerna. Vi fann dock skillnader gällande rapporteringen av partiet. Sverigedemokraterna fick större exponering i de skånska tidningarna sett till antalet artiklar och storleken på artiklarna.

    Setting the News Agenda: Women’s Influence and Status in Dar es Salaam’s Radio Newsrooms2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis

    The widespread presence of radio in Tanzania suggests that the news being broadcasted nationally has a large public and political impact. In this thesis we examine what roles a few women journalists hold in Dar es Salaam’s radio newsrooms. Our research question concerns how these women journalists perceive their influence in the newsroom during the agenda setting process. We interviewed seven women journalists, who hold varying positions in different radio newsrooms in Dar es Salaam, concerning their perception of their own informal status in the office hierarchy. We then present and analyze key quotes from our respondents using Bourdieu’s theory of social fields and perspective on male domination, Hirdman’s stereotypical gender contract and a postcolonial feminist perspective. Our repondents told us of the importance of empowering other women at the editorial office as well as putting gender issues revolving women and girls on the news agenda. In this way they demonstrate the importance of a gender equal representation in the newsroom and in the news content. We come to the conclusion that our respondents do indeed perceive themselves to have influence over the news agenda and they use different strategies to gain status and recognition in the newsroom.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the swedish newspaper Aftonbladet constructed the discourse of the refugee crisis in Europe during the year 2015. By using a critical discourse analysis of nine articles the study was able to show how the newspaper portrayed the power relationship between the characters.

     

    The following questions was examined:

    • How does Aftonbladet construct the refugee crisis as an event?
    • How is the relationships between the characters within the text portrayed?

     

    The result showed that there were five different discourse patterns that appeared which constructed the refugee crisis as a problem and a threat for the European Union and the member countries. The relationship between the different characters within the text was embossed by hegemony because the refugees was represented as helpless and the authoritative countries talked about how the refugees affected their everyday life.

     

    Therefore Aftonbladet embedded the refugees in archetypes and like they were subordinate to the national states, which lead to a portrayal of the crisis as a international discussion more than a catastrophy for humanity.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to show which content that is most common in the Swedish News Agency TT Nyhetsbyrån’s sports coverage. It also shows if the coverage is concentrated to for example any special sports, clubs, people or topics.

    This study uses a quantitative content analysis and the result is based on texts from 28 systematically selected days during one year. In total, the study includes 906 texts.

    The result of this study shows that the sports content of TT Nyhetsbyrån’s news feed is mainly concentrated to two sports, football/soccer and ice hockey. Several studies of other Sports Media show the same result as this study in terms of news content. 

    One of the conclusions is that the sports coverage is focused on athletes and teams at a professional level. Only a few sports, almost entirely practiced by men, is represented in the reporting. There are also other attributes that seem important for the news coverage. One of the most common attributes is that a big part of the news texts includes Swedish Athletes. Another important attribute is that the news can be related to a country that is close to Sweden in culture.

    Today’s organizations can not avoid social media. Previous research focuses on how organizations should communicate in general, and not how communication between organizations and customers is expressed to build customer engagemant and relationships. Social media provides an unique oppurtunity to create customer engagement through the interactivety possibilities of the medium.

    This study aims to expand the research field with the pourpose of studying how Swedish companies perceive social media as a communication tool to engage and build relationships with their customers. This research takes on the organization’s perspective and intends to answer how organizations communicate to build customer engagement and customer relationships.

    In order to answer the main question, nine qualitative interviews were conducted with nationwide Swedish companies that work with social media. In addition to the interviews, a feasibility study was implemented in the form of a netnographic observation of participating organizations’ social media accounts.

    According to the theoretical framework, the excellence theory is not supported in this study, since the participating companies prefer to exercise two-way assymmetrical communication in social media. The stakeholder approach is used by the organizations since they strive to keep the customers satisfied with the communication. The research did not reveal that they communicated according to the interactive communications model, however, their communication did show similarities with Shannon & Weavers model of communication. The study also showed that, according to Evans model for engagement, the organizations focus lies on the second level of engagement, curation. Thus, the organization’s investigated in this study communicate through creating content correlated with customers demands in order to create customer engagement and relationships, and to set the agenda for the dialogue.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explain and discover how a Swedish commune works with their external crisis communication during a large crisis. The case study revolved around a simulation exercise with Mjölby commune that was and organized by the company VSL Systems AB. The study addresses the difficulties that arise within the crisis communication, and shows witch factors that are important to consider, when you are responsible for an entire community.

    Our result shows that the relationship with media could be utilized in a better way and both parties could benefit from cooperation. The commune could have used varied communication channels to create more effective crisis communication which had reached a bigger group of people. The information was not adapted to the different groups to the extent it could have been.

    PURPOSE: This study will aim to contribute to the improvement of knowledge in the field of media and communication science, related to how Facebook affects co-worker relationships in Swedish organisations.

    METHODOLOGY: This study will use surveys to measure the attitudes of employees who use Facebook in three different organisations and look at how this influences their working relationships.

    FINDINGS: The findings in this study support the idea that Facebook does have an effect on co-worker relationships. The research undertaken shows that Facebook causes increased levels of annoyance amongst employees. However, despite this; if used in a respectful manner, co-workers that have colleagues as Facebook friends can in fact strengthen their working relationship.

    RESEARCH IMPLICATIONS: The variables in this study are self-reported. This means they are subject to the normal limitations of cross-sectional survey research.

    PRACTICAL IMPLICATION: This study will help organisations to improve their understanding of the influence Facebook has on their employees. This research can be used as guidance on the proper use of Facebook, which should help to minimise the levels of annoyance amongst employees and strengthen their working relationships.

    ORIGINALITY/VALUE: No research on this issue has been undertaken in Sweden before and so this study aims to alert organisations and provide them with the appropriate knowledge of how communication over social media impacts the relationships between their employees.

    Frågeställning: Vilken roll intar de sociala medierna i kommuners kommunikationsarbete?

    Bakgrund: De senaste åren har allt fler kommuner börjat använda sig av sociala medier. Detta ställer stora krav på kommunerna, att anpassa kommunikationen efter medborgarna och efter de nya medierna. Frågan är vilken funktion och roll de sociala medierna får i kommunernas kommunikationsarbete.

    Syfte: Att tillföra kunskaper om hur man kan förstå sociala medier  som mötesplats mellan kommuner och medborgare. Meningen med studien är att tillföra kunskaper såväl om syftena bakom närvaron som hur det fungerar i praktiken.

    Metod: Kvalititativa forskningsintervjuer med kommunikationsexperter på tre svenska kommuner och kvantitativ innehållsanalys av kommunernas Facebooksidor.

    Slutsats: Sociala medier används oftast för att föra ut information och i liten utsträckning för att interagera. Då interaktion uppstår är det sällan ömsesidigt, medborgarna vill inte prata om samma saker som kommunen. Resultatet tyder samtidigt på att närvaron på sociala medier kan stärka kommunens legitimitet. Vad som förhindrar utvecklingen mot en utökad dialog  är resurser, prioriteringar och synen på demokrati och medborgarinflytande.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim with this study is to investigate how Swedish public service local radio uses information subsides in the form of press releases. In terms of which entrants gain entrance to the news feed, in which forms and in which subjects. Also we wanted to study how the journalist uses the content in the press releases. To do this we cooperated with the public service radio channel Sveriges radio P4 Kalmar. For 28 days, four weeks, we collected all incoming press releases to the newsroom of P4 Kalmar. All in all we got 1046 press releases sorted in four weekly periods. Out of each one of those periods we randomly selected 75 press releases to get our sample of units. We did a quantitative analysis by finding keywords in the units and then searched in the news rooms own editorial database and their news web.

    The result show that P4 Kalmar uses 7,3 percent of the press realeases that they are subsidised with. The press releases that becomes news are rarely changed in terms of for example angle.

    FRÅGESTÄLLNINGHur använder svenska politiker Twitter? Och hur kan det förstås utifrån medialisering och personifiering?

    BAKGRUNDDet som skrivs på Twitter tenderar att få mycket uppmärksamhet, och inte bara från de som använder Twitter. Det ligger i dess natur att snabbt koppla samman människor, och skapa räckvidd bra mycket längre än läsarkretsen. Dock utgör twitteranvändare i Sverige en ganska liten skara. Endast två procent twittrar dagligen, och elva procent säger sig twittra någon gång ibland. Men desto fler politiker twittrar.

    SYFTEDet övergripande syftet med uppsatsen är att bidra med kunskap och förståelse kring vad politikers twitteranvändande har för betydelse i samhället. Likaså bidra med kunskap kring vad för arena Twitter är, hur riksdagsledamöter väljer att använda den och vilka riksdagsledamöter som befinner sig där.

    METODEmpirin utgörs av samtliga inlägg publicerade av riksdagsledamöter under en treveckorsperiod. Statistik plockades ut från ett totalurval och en innehållsanalys gjordes på ett slumpmässigt urval.

    SLUTSATSRiksdagsledamöter använder Twitter för att konversera, informera och kommentera. Framförallt är det politiker som pratar politik med andra politiker. Twitter bidrar till både medialisering och personifiering, och politikers användande av Twitter kan ses som en anpassning till medialiseringen. Twitter är också ett forum där den personliga rollen och den offentliga rollen smälter samman.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to examine how female and male perpetrators are represented in the tabloid Aftonbladet. The study is based on two murder cases that resemble each other. The murders are commited by two perpetrators together, a woman and a man. The questions examined are: How are the perpetrators and victims of news journalism represented in murders commited together by a female and male offender? Which are the similarities and differences between how female and male offenders are represented?

    We executed a critical discourse analysis of 14 news articles from Aftonbladet, from the time period of the detention to the sentence of the crimes. The result shows that the perpetrators together are represented as well-planned, greedy and evil. The female offender are represented as manipulative, emotional and her actions are correlated to her role as a mother. Furthermore she is placed above the male offender, he becomes submissive. The man is also represented as deviant and has relationship problems with others. The victims are portrayed as helpless and innocent. They are also represented as thoughtful and generous towards their children. The victims’ fear is portrayed in relation to the perpetrators malice.

    Smartphones and news consumption in Kenya: How technical devices are used by students at the Technical University of Mombasa2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Our study has explored how university students at the Technical University of Mombasa, TUM, in Kenya consume news. The aim of the research has been to get a snapshot picture of what the consumption look like in a time and context when the development of Internet Communication Technology, ICT, has increased rapidly in a short period of time.

    Our empiric data has been collected through three different methods. First we approached the area of the Technical University of Mombasa with an ethnographic method. Then we went on with an in-depth interview with one of our key informants before handing out a survey to collect quantitative data to analyse.

    Through theoretical framework rooted in the theories of Digital divide and New media we interpreted our data to be able to answer our research questions.

    The results show that the use of the smartphone is widely spread in order to consume news among students of TUM. Money is still a big obstacle for the majority of the students in our population in how they can access news through technical devices. The gap between those who can afford and those who fight with financial issues is still large. Our study confirms that the gap in the digital divide is still big but we could read signs telling us that the gap maybe is about to shrink.

    INTRODUKTION:

    Sedan 1960-talet har dagspressens uppgift och marknadssituation diskuterats. 1971 infördes ett presstöd som skulle rädda tidningar som inte ekonomiskt kunde klara att överleva av egna krafter. Presstödets vara eller icke vara har debatterats flitig sedan dess och åsikterna går isär om stödet snedvrider konkurrensen på dagspressmarknaden eller om stödet ger ett bidrag till den svenska demokratin och värnar om en mångfald av tidningar. Vad är det som skiljer debattörerna i synen på dagspressens marknadsförutsättningar? Vilka ideologiska övertygelser är det som håller debatten vid liv och vilka olika innebörder lägger debattörerna i begreppen mångfald och konkurrens?

    Att undersöka debatten kring det svenska presstödet i de fyra dagstidningarna Svenska Dagbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Sydsvenskan och Göteborgs-Posten. Följande frågeställningar besvaras: Vilka olika pressideologiska värderingar eller synsätt har deltagarna i presstödsdebatten? Vilka marknadsförutsättningar tycker respektive sida i debatten ska gälla för dagstidningarna? Vad skiljer debattörerna åt i synen på mångfald och konkurrens i mediepolitiken?

    TEORI:

    Studien tar sin utgångspunkt i fyra normativa pressideologier: den auktoritära ideologin, den frihetliga ideologin, ideologin om socialt ansvar och den leninistiska pressideologin.

    METOD:

    Studien har två metoder. En kvalitativ metod för att skapa en djupare insikt i studiens frågeställningar genom analys av artiklarnas innehåll. En kvantitativ metod som beskriver material, innehåll och mönster i form av mängdberäkningar vilket ger ett större underlag för analys och slutsatser.

    RESULTAT:

    Den auktoritära pressideologin används som en skrämseltaktik av både stödförespråkare och stödmotståndare. Den leninistiska ideologin ger ett bidrag till den samlade bilden av hur världens olika länder kan organisera sin dagspress men den ger inget bidrag till debatten kring det svenska presstödet. Debattens deltagare befinner sig främst i den frihetliga ideologin och i ideologin om socialt ansvar.  Presstödsdebatten bedrivs på en elitnivå bland politiker, medieägare, fackliga tjänstemän, forskare och professorer samt journalister. Inga privatpersoner har intresse av presstödets vara eller icke vara.

    DISKUSSION:

    Studiens resultat visar två olika perspektiv på marknadsförutsättningar som respektive sida i debatten tycker ska gälla för dagspressen, ett marknadsekonomiskt perspektiv och ett demokratiskt ansvarsfullt perspektiv. De båda lägger var sin innebörd i begreppen mångfald och konkurrens. Dagspressen ska finansiera sig själv utifrån marknadens förutsättningar anser motståndarna i debatten men klarar inte marknaden detta så ska staten vara en hjälpande hand anser förespråkarna. Dagspressen är en del av Sveriges demokrati och presstödet är ett bidrag till denna.

    Abstract [en]

    The meaning of this study is to see how a suspected murderer is presented in the Swedish newspapers Expressen and Falu Kuriren. We want to see how two Swedish newspapers, a local- and an evening paper, presented Anders Eklund, who killed the ten year old girl Engla Höglund in 2008, from the day after her disappearing and almost a month ahead.

    When we analysis the resolution to the study we could see that both papers presented Anders Eklund like a convicted murderer after he admitted the murder of Engla Höglund, even if the court had not sentenced him yet. Even when Anders Eklund was anonymous, you can through the various denominations witch were produced in the papers speculate on who the murderer is.

    Even that it is a case study, we can see with the previous research tends that a suspected murderer is produced in this way in Swedish newspapers. We could also see that the evening paper where more likely to present sensation and drama to the texts than the local paper did.

    Abstract [en]

    The state of cultural journalism has been a subject of discussion within journalism research for a long period of time. The core of the discussion is that cultural journalism differs from journalism in many ways, which creates friction. Some researchers illustrate this friction as a battle between two separate paradigms – the journalistic paradigm and the aestethic paradigm – and their values. The aesthetic paradigm strives for values such as subjectivity, pedagogicality and expertise, while the journalistic paradigm focuses on effectivity, objectivity and ethics. The research concerning this has mostly been aimed at literature and music, but not film to the same extent.

    This study aimed to fill that gap by investigating the changes within swedish film criticism during the time between the late ‘90s and today. The platforms that we analysed are Moviezine, Barometern and Aftonbladet and the film reviews from them were analysed from the perspective of language, method of production and the values of the two paradigms. The study showed that these three platforms took their own paths; some of them have moved towards the aesthetic paradigm, while others have gone in the opposite direction. 2016 is the most divisive year of the analysed years.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to examine opinion texts and news articles concering the debate about whether or not Sweden should join Nato. The question about a Swedish Nato membership has been dead for quite a while, but a study from the SOM-institute in 2015 showed that for the first time in decades a majority of the swedees was in favour of joing Nato.

     

    This study uses a quantative method to examine several aspects of the debate and reporting in the following news papers: Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Sydsvenskan and Svenska Dagbladet. The research goes into bias, the general charateristics of the reporting and how Russia is portrayed.

    Russia has lately been viewed as an antagonist of Nato. Therefore, it was deemed probable that the portraying of Russia could have an impact on the way swedes percieve Nato.

     

    The results of the study shows that the majority of the text published in relation to the topic were opinion texts. There was a general pattern were the political colour of the newspaper had some effect on the published material, but not enough that it could be deemed as being biased biased.

     

    Russia were often portrayed in a negative tone and was also often portrayed as being a threat to other european countries.

    This study aims to investigate how the main characters of Law & Order: SpecialVictims Unit are portrayed by using a list of gender-coded attributes. By using aquantitative content analysis the authors of this study examined the behaviour of 14different characters over 19 seasons to find similarities and differences in how thefemale and male characters were portrayed. The findings showed that both thefemale and male characters had a higher amount of male coded attributes thanfemale coded attributes, and that the highest showing attributes varied very littlebetween both the individual characters and the gender groups as a whole. This kindof study has scarcely been done regardless of genre, and so it serves as a solidfoundation for future research.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this media scientific study is to contribute to a better understanding about how blind people’s empowerment and participation may affect their role in the digital society.

    Earlier international studies in this area have shown that blind people not only need more knowledge then the seeing population about the computer, but also about the technology behind their tools for using Internet. The results from these studies have also shown that Internet increases the blind people’s independents and that those who use Internet feel more involved in the society.

    A qualitative method was chosen to study the three most common categories from the earlier studies: knowledge of technology, empowerment and participation. Are there differences in the results compared to our study in Sweden 2014?

    Interviews with eight blind, experienced computer users have shown that knowledge of technology is essential for their use of Internet and that the Internet increases their empowerment and their participation. But good knowledge of technology is not a guarantee for a flawless use of Internet. The most common problem is not lack of knowledge, but the web sites are not customised for the blind person’s needs and tools. The theoretical framework of the study is based on the theories of the digital divided and Jürgen Habermas theory about the public sphere.

    Abstract [en]

    This study focuses on the motives that recruiters can or may have within companies, organizations and authorities of using Facebook as a complement in the investigation of potential work-candidates. The study also explores the consequences that could occur regarding the boundaries of private and public spheres when recruiters are researching Facebook-pages of potential work-candidates.

    The results were collected by qualitative interviews with eight different recruiters from a wide range of businesses in Kalmar.

    By applying a framework of already identified uses and gratifications, we discovered six different motives of why recuriters would use Facebook as a complement while recruiting work-candidates. The motives are; security, guidance and advice, convenience utility, surveillance, curiosity and economic motives. We also discovered that the following consequences of researching Facebook-pages of potential workcandidates are that candidates are restricted in the possibilities of acting private on their Facebook-pages and that candidates have zero control of their published materials since recruiters sets the limits of what can be thought of as private and as public.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to examine how everyday heroes are constructed in “Swedish Heroes”, which is a series of articles from Aftonbladet. This thesis also aimed to investigate the similarities and differences based on gender in the construction of everyday heroes. We used a critical discourse analysis influenced by van Dijk to match the aims of this thesis. In this study 13 articles from Aftonbladet were analyzed.

    The results of our analysis showed that in the articles, the heroes were constructed as unique which separated them from other people. The heroes were represented as role models, and received different rewards for their achievements. Although the heroes faced obstacles throughout their heroic efforts, the hero did not surrender. Our study showed that although the construction of male and female heroes had many similarities, there were also differences to be found. In the analyzed articles the male heroes were represented as confident. The female heroes were represented as caring, and motherhood played a significant role in the construction of female everyday heroes.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to examine how women and men are presented in the public service entertainment journalism, and more exact how they are presented in the Swedish-Norwegian television talk show Skavlan and what roles they are assigned to in Skavlan. The main question for this study was “What roles are assigned to women and men in Skavlan?” With roles, I mean roles that are connected to the aspect of power between women and men that can be found in gender-theory. To answer the main question and the purpose of the study I analyzed four interviews from the latest season of Skavlan where both men and women are being interviewed, using critical discourse analysis according to Fairclough. 

    The result of the study shows that women and men are assigned to different kind of roles in Skavlan and the roles are gender stereotyped. Men are assigned to roles such as authoritarian and knowing and women are assigned to roles such as responsible and high-performance. Men are also presented as superior to the woman and in the majority of the interviews men are using verbal suppression techniques against each other and against women. Sometimes it can also be perceived as if women are using verbal suppression techniques, even if it’s more obvious that men are using it.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines how the media reports on the Pride Festival in Stockholm and what news topics and themes it prioritizes. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the media coverage of Pride highlights political questions related to social and societal problems. One of the main focuses of the study is on how the media covers male and female homosexuality. The newspapers examined are the tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen and the respected dailies Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. The study extends over three periods: 19-07-2010 to 07-08-2010, 25-07-2011 to 14-08-2011, and 24-07-2012 to 11-08-2012.

    Several key theories and themes frame the study. One of the theoretical bases of this study is agenda theory, which is based on the idea that issues get more media attention when the audience perceives them as important. Another key theory in the study is the theory of news values, which concerns how potential news items are evaluated editorially. The study also looks at the theme of sex and gender as a power aspect and how the representation of the sexes appears in today's media.

    Using quantitative content analysis, 291 articles have been studied. The results show that media coverage during the Pride festival includes articles that address both serious and non-serious issues. Furthermore, the results show that the coverage of male homosexuals is more frequent than of female homosexuals. However, the majority of the articles focused on the collective concept “LGBT” and not on gender related issues.

    Abstract [en]

    Traditional retouching, where you make the body of a female model in a magazine thinner, has been common for a long time and is well known. Several studies indicates that showing ultra-thin images of female bodies in media can lower the body satisfaction of “ordinary” women which in some cases can lead to dangerous eating disorders. But in 2010 Swedish female magazine VeckoRevyn introduced a new type of retouching: Making some catwalk models bodies bigger instead, which we decided to call opposite retouching. This kind of retouching is aiming to widen the ideal picture that is sent out of how the female body should look like, and therefore having the readers reach a higher body satisfaction and becoming more at peace with the own body. This according to the magazine’s editor in chief, Linda Öhrn Lernstrom.

    In this attitude study we are looking to widen the knowledge about opposite retouching as a phenomenon by doing qualitative interviews with a number of young women in age 15 – 25 about their outlook on this new retouching. We later present as extensively as we can all these different outlooks, as well as by using Festinger’s social comparison theory, the social responsibility theory presented by Peterson and finally Hall’s representation theory, analyse these outlooks at a deeper level.

    Opposite retouching showed to be a controversial phenomenon among our respondents: Some of the women meant that the magazine takes their social responsibility and that this initiative is admirable, while some thought that it just makes some women’s body dissatisfaction even worse since even the thin catwalk models bodies weren’t “good enough”. The women in this study belong to the same age group and live in the same culture, which accordning to Hall is crucial for how one perceives media content, and had still such great differences of opinion when it came to the subject of opposite retouching. This indicates that this new retouching needs further investigation, and this attitude study strives to be a contribution to the research field.

    Problem: Tre särskilda PR-event fick spridning i svenska tidningsmedier under 2013 och 2014. Vad i den journalistiska processen gör att särskilda händelser blir uppmärksammade nyhetsfenomen? Hur blir särskilda event nyheter och hur ser nyhetsvärderingen ut ur ett sociokulturellt perspektiv?

    Teori: Jag använde nyhetsvärdering och sociokultur som teoretiska ingångar för att belysa problemet. Nyhetsvärdering beskriver hur journalister arbetar efter grundregler som kan få oss att förstå nyheters komplexitet. Galtung och Ruges nyhetsvärderingskriterier, medielogik, dagordningsteorin samt framing är teorier för att värdera nyheter. Sociokulturella teorier om myter och ideologier används för att tolka kulturella värden i eventen som nyheter.

    Metod: Kvantitativ metod användes för insamling och kartläggning av sociokulturella kriterier. En kvalitativ textanalys ställdes mot den kvantitativa undersökningen. Jag gjorde då en kulturanalytisk nyhetsvärdering med hjälp av Galtung och Ruges nyhetsvärderingskriterier: frekvens, tröskelvärde, tydlighet, relevans, konsonans, överraskande, kontinuitet, bra blandning, elitnationer, elitaktörer, personifiering och negativitet. De kriterier som artiklarna uppfyllde tolkades sociokulturellt utifrån kulturanalytiska perspektiv och journalistiska arbetsrutiner.

    Resultat: Diagram visar i hur stor utsträckning sociokulturella kriterier nämns i respektive nyhet. Kriterierna visade sig vara stereotypa karaktärer, sociala institutioner och platser samt ordval. Nyhetsvärderingen visade samband med sociokulturella teman som är typiska för en rådande kultur, i fallet den kultur som finns i den publik svenska tidningsmedier riktar sig till. Studien visar att det är möjligt att med sociokultur i samspel med nyhetsvärde kan förklaras varför vissa event blir virala nyheter i svensk massmedia.

    Diskussion: Tillslut argumenterar jag för att de tre eventen har särskilda kulturella kriterier gemensamt och som kan beskrivas som ett syntagm utifrån ett kulturellt paradigm. Syntagmet sätts i system utifrån vad massmedia och publik ingår i för föreställningsvärld och vad den innehåller för myter om vad som är viktigt. Den särskilda föreställningsvärlden liknas vid paradigmet som syntagmet skapas ifrån, vilket går att beskriva samtliga event med.

    Abstract [en]

    The trial and verdict of Rakim Mayers, also known as ASAP Rocky, caused major media attention during the summer of 2019. The aim of this bachelor study was to examine how news journalism represented the case “ASAP Rocky” in Swedish tabloids. The research questions examined were: How does journalism portray the story of the victim and perpetrator in the case “ASAP Rocky” ? What are the differences and similarities in how victim and perpetrator are constructed? How does the story develop in Swedish tabloids during the case “ASAP Rocky”? 

     

    We used Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) to identify reoccurring discourses in the description of the case “ASAP Rocky”. By examining the characters, victim and perpetrator in Swedish tabloids, we found that there was no idealistic role portrayed in the case. Both the victim and the perpetrator were described as insufficient.

    One discursive theme was that the victim is inadequate since ASAP Rocky´s status as a celebrity provides him an advantage. This discourse is identified also in texts describing ASAP Rocky as a perpetrator. The study showed that the different discourses concern moral values in various contradictions, such as good - evil, right - wrong and “we” versus “them”. 

     

    Our study shows that the discourses we found contributes to the creation of celebrities and the discourse that celebrities are unreachable. The conclusion of this study is that media contributes to the stereotype of celebrities.

    This study aims from a gender perspective to examine how the audience pay attention to people of power in news media. To examine this we viewed how televiewers pay attention to party leaders in televised political debates. The studys gender perspective can be divided into two main aspects, on one hand whether the party leaders gender have any impact on the televiewers attention and on the other hand whether the televiewers gender have any impact on how they divide their attention. The questions examined are “how do televiewers pay attention to male versus female party leaders in political televised debates?” and “what differences and similarities can be found in how male versus female televiewers pay attention to party leaders in political televised debates?”. To get a comprehensive understanding of the audiences attention we combined two different methods; eye tracking methodology and qualitative interview. Eye tracking generated objective knowledge of the televiewers visual fixations while the qualitative interview gave us a deeper understanding of their memorialization. Five men and five women participated in this study. 

    Our results show that our participants give more detailed attention to the female party leaders appearances, while to a greater extent remembering the male party leaders political statements. We found more similarities than differences in how male versus female televiewers pay attention to party leaders, both with and without regard of the party leaders gender. For example male politicians seem to be the norm for what makes a party leader, since many participants primarily tend to fixate on them while also remembering their statements. However, our male participants tend to make fewer but longer fixations while our female participants instead tend to make more but shorter fixations. To summarize the results, we can see that both the party leaders and the televiewers gender have an significance to the televiewers attention.

    The thesis is about a small NGO that is working with the rights of persons with albinism in Tanzania. It deals with the NGOs advocacy work on a local and national level, and addresses the challenges that come with their work. 

    I have concluded that advocacy is a powerful tool for NGOs to use as a part of their strategic communication. NGOs in the Global South and especially Africa are given less attention, thus having less opportunities of reaching out with their message. I have also concluded that for an NGO to succeed in its advocacy work it needs to carefully identify its target audiences and adapt the messages thereafter. To build a relationship with the audiences is also an important part of the process, as a strong relationship increases the chances of involvement in the organization. ICTs can be very useful for NGOs that strive to reach out to the global community.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to examine which impact social media has on gender equality. During The Oscars Red Carpet Live 2014 the hashtag #Askhermore arose in the social media sphere. The hashtag implies an existing difference in the questions asked towards women and men on the red carpet. To get a closer look into the climate on the red carpet this study focuses merely on the American Broadcasting Channel’s (ABC) broadcasts from the Oscars red carpet. To be able to follow up the movement and its’ potential effect, the study views two broadcastings done before the establishment of the hashtag and two done after.

    Focusing on the verbal communication (the language being used), as well as the visual communication (the camera movements and angles), our study shows that #Askhermore has had a great impact on ABC’s Oscars red carpet broadcasts. By looking at these two types of communication in our analysis, it is revealed that women, before the establishment of #Askhermore, were mainly asked about their looks and clothes - while men were asked about their accomplishments in acting. Something that was drastically changed during the two later years of reporting, where women instead were asked the same type of questions as the male actors attending the event.     Introduction: As the media landscape has changed so has fierce competition in the market, giving an effect of stronger commercialization of the media. Societal problems in our society are caused by increased commercialization and market orientation. Media has gone from trusted social institutions to focus on their own economic interests, where owners are expected revenue. The content of the media is characterized more and more by entertainment, because it attracts a larger audience. On one side media is expected to contribute to democracy in society and on the other they are expected to contribute profits to their owners, which creates a conflict in today’s media society. Since TV4 is Sweden's largest commercial tv-channel it is interesting for us to study them and understand their view. 

    Purpose: Our purpose of this paper is to create an understanding how the TV4 group’s management looks at external influences when it comes to the design of the channel. The aim is also to see how they relate to commercial and democratic interests. 

    Methodology: The study was based from a hermeneutic viewpoint and a deductive research approach. We collected out empirical data through qualitative interviews with people that could contribute with valuable and relevant information for our study. 

    Conclusion: We concluded that there are several external factors that affect the design of the TV4 channel, such as advertisers, owners, audience and competitors. Factors affecting to varying degrees. Today's media companies relate to commercial and democratic interests in different ways depending on different expectations.

    METOD: Empirin utgörs av sju kvalitativa respondentintervjuer, en informantintervju samt en observation på Migrationsverket.

    SLUTSATS: Det finns en stor frustration med det så kallade ”systemet” och en åtskillnad görs mellan Migrationsverket och tjänstepersonerna som arbetar där. Myndighetens byråkratiska arbetssätt upplevs som stelt, medan tjänstepersonerna görs till individer som blir inbjudna till in-group. Systemet hålls å sin sida utanför i en out-group. Immigranterna visar ett högt förtroende till Migrationsverket men känner hopplöshet inför den asymmetriska maktrelation. Vidare ser vi, trots frustrationen över myndighetens stelhet, att det uppskattas att den upprätthåller de byråkratiska kraven på jämlikhet.

    Purpose: The purpose of our research was to study the role and impact that ‘information and communication technologies’ and the MEC centers might have on the Uruguayan society. We want to examine how MEC and ICT usage could affect daily lives of marginalized people in Uruguay. We want to explore how it might benefit individuals living in small communities by evaluating indicators of positive impact of how ICT usage could strengthen capitals and increase freedom. Furthermore, our aim is to understand how digital literacy and the access to ICT’s can be related to democracy, and try to understand if greater individual empowerment also could enhance democracy.

    Method: For a period of eight weeks, from March 3rd to 28th of April 2014, we were in Montevideo and vicinity to gather material that we later have analyzed qualitatively. The material is based on observations in the field, interviews with various stakeholders, manuals and national policy documents concerning MEC, as well answers we received from an online survey.

    Main conclusions:We have found that the MEC centers and ICT, combined with education, could be an important tool to facilitate the inclusion of marginalized groups in the Uruguayan society. Our findings indicate that the MEC centers in Uruguay could contribute to the decentralization of the country and have a positive impact on gender- and generation equality. The result suggests that the centers could have a positive impact on democracy in Uruguay by teaching participants how to use e-governmental services as well as encouraging them to participate in online governmental websites. Furthermore, we found that MEC lets the local communities be in charge of their own development, which indicate that the sustainability of the project is increased as well as the positive development outcome. Through the MEC centers we found that both the freedom and the social capital of the participants were positively affected.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of the study was to examine how two newspapers covered the murder of Lisa Holm. The questions examined were: How are Lisa Holm, the perpetrator and the local community represented and what are the differences and similarities between the local news paper, Skaraborgs Allehanda, and the tabloid, Aftonbladet? 

    We made a discourse analysis of 13 news articles from six different time periodes. The result shows that the victim is represented as an innocent, young girl who is described as good, happy and perfect. The local news paper represents her as a part of the local community and the tabloid is highlighting attributes that people can identify with. The perpetrator is represented as an evil and callous foreign in both newspapers, but Aftonbladet also represents him as a usual person. Skaraborgs Allehanda focus on his guilt of the murder. The local community is represented as a certain group with common emotions who is also the light in the darkness. They share the grief and help each other to process it. The tabloid focus on highlighting the geografic closeness between the people in the articles and the murder. In Aftonbladet, the local community is also described as a dangerous place. Our study shows that the distance between the newspaper and the crime scene affect the representations of the people involved.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to examine how the two largest sports tabloids, Aftonbladet and Expressen, in Sweden represented the male and female Swedish athletes during the Olympic games in Pyeongchang 2018. Furthermore, the study examined how many male and female journalists covered the sport sections during the event and whether or not there were any differences between the tabloids. With agenda setting theory and hegemonic masculinity as our theoretical framework we conducted a quantitative content analysis on every news article revolving Swedish Olympic athletes during the Olympic period.

    The results showed no significant difference between male and female athletes regarding the amount of coverage in the tabloids. However, other findings were made and showed that female athletes more often got associated with their families and partners while male athletes were associated with their coaches. The study also showed that the majority of journalists reporting from the Olympic games were male.

    This study was conducted with the motive to analyze and demonstrate the differences and similarities of three Swedish newspapers’ coverage about two different murders. The main focus of the study was to compare and contrast the newspapers’ descriptions of one male and one female murderer. Through the study we also aimed to answer the question “Is it possible to apply the Chivalry Hypothesis in the newspapers descriptions of the murderers?” The Chivalry Hypothesis proclaims that women get treated in a more lenient way than men in the judicial system of America. A study from 2006 discovered that a specific newspaper in USA did in fact not treat criminal women in a more lenient way than criminal men. Our most important theoretical standpoints was that of discourse; as discourse analysis in the way Norman Fairclough preferred it was the method that was used. As we compared differences between the sexes gender studies was also a major theoretical part of the study. The result of our empirical analysis showed that a man and a woman which had committed similar murders during the same time period was partially treated and described different from each other in the articles. The result also showed partial support for the thesis about the Chivalry Hypothesis being translatable to Swedish news-press.

    Is social media becoming a new form of interview? 

    This is a quantitative study about the use of quotations from social media in Swedish newspapers. We chose the online editions of two of Sweden’s biggest newspapers for this, namely aftonbladet.se and dn.se.

    Although we noticed a big difference between the more serious dn.se and the more scandal-oriented aftonbladet.se both newspaper still frequently used quotations from social media.

    The thing that we found most troublesome about this phenomenon was the fact that we found that journalists very rarely contacted the person whose quotations they used. That meant that the interviewee had a very slim chance of correcting any misunderstandings.

    It also opened up the opportunity for certain people to use the media to spread their own agendas without getting questioned.

    We used the social institutionalizing theory and the social responsibility theory to verify our findings. We also used the concept of the Megaphone effect to help better understand this phenomenon.

    The study concludes that use of quotations from social media, without the element of an interview, is a danger to the credibility of the Swedish press.

    English title: Julia and the elite. A study of how the Internet hatred developed into a media avalanche.

    Introduction: During February 2013 Swedish media flooded with news of online hate directed towards women after an episode of Uppdrag Granskning on SVT (2013). Female media profiles were given the opportunity to tell the entire Swedish population about the hate and threats they had been exposed to online. In this thesis we want to investigate what topics end up on the media´s agenda, how a piece of news is developed and framed.

    Questions: How does a piece of news considered highly newsworthy develop from when it first appears in the media until it gradually disappears? How and why did Internet hatred end up on the media´s agenda? How does the media framed the Internet hatred?

    Theory: To be able to answer the questions formulated in this thesis, the following theories have been used: Agenda-Setting theory, framing theory, news valuation and media logic. 

    Method: Quantitative content analysis of news broadcasts and debate shows from TV, radio and newspapers. Additionally a qualitative content analysis by support of a rhetorical and semiotic analysis of two debate articles and one TV feature.

    Result: The online hate debate was to be divided into two main debates concerning how to handle online hate in terms of the law and men who hate women in the public sphere. The majority of those who participate in the online hate debate belong to some form of either media, political, legal or academic elite. More than halv of those who fight for the online hate-cause belong to the media elite. Julia, who participate in Uppdrag Granskning on SVT, is one of the most prominent citizens who campaign for the cause. 

    Conclusion: The most important conclusion in this thesis is that the Internet hatred predominantly centred on Julia and the different elite groups. The media elite was both the victim and the fiercest campaigner for the cause. Even though online hate was described as a general problem in society, it was primarily framed as a problem for the media elite. An event will be considered highly newsworthy and will end up on the media´s agenda if it is, among others, unexpected, sensational and somehow focused on an elite group. A news story is more likely to turn into a media avalanche if it raises interest and engages a large audience, as it leads to an increased demand for more articles in the news reporting.

    In a dynamic world of constant changes, social and technological developments have made crisis communication and crisis management more valuable than ever to organisations. Previous research has suggested that organisations with a certain entrusting relationship to stakeholders might not share premises for crisis communication with corporate organisations. Furthermore, the field of crisis communication suffers from a lack of studies focusing on organisations´ communication on social media during crisis. Using text analysis, this study investigates the Swedish trade union Kommunal’s communication on Facebook during the crisis in January 2016. Results show that Kommunal did not utilize a crisis frame similar enough to the crisis frame used by stakeholders and media, and that Kommunal did not accept enough stakeholder and media attributions of crisis responsibility. The results produces questions for further research about the balancing act between being consistent and adjusting to the crisis situation when communicating during crisis, as well as about if organisations are affected not only by their own crisis history and prior relationship reputation, but by the crisis history and prior relationship reputation of similar organisations as well.

    In this study, situated in Sweden, citizen community journalism in 290 municipalities is evaluated. The results reveal that there are very few cases of citizen journalism at a community level, and that the existing citizen journalists focus on business news, entertainment and sports. When sources are used, they are few and originate from social institutions such as business, media, authorities and politics rather than citizens. Furthermore, there are only a few occasions when local authorities are included at all, even less so scrutinised, in the news stories. All in all, the study indicates that Swedish citizen community journalism has trouble either providing information that maintains the community or being the watchdog of that community.

    In the early 21st century, almost everyone takes journalism on the web for granted. However, it was not many years ago that journalism moved online and a distinct form of journalism began to develop. Ranging from online doubles of the paper editions to publications exclusively produced for the web, the evolvement of web journalism has entailed both dramatic and not-so-dramatic changes in the way that journalistic products are produced, disseminated, and received. Online journalism has usually been demarcated from traditional journalism by four traits: interactivity, immediacy, hypertextuality, and multimodality. These characteristics are generally identified by scholars as points where journalism on the web brings added value in comparison to the old print newspapers. Interactivity involves various aspects of user activity and participation in the processes of consuming, contributing to, and disseminating news afforded by the web. Immediacy refers to the nature and consequences of the faster pace of publication in web news. Hypertextuality has to do with the possibilities of linking journalistic texts to other texts, which makes the text more transparent and open.Multimodality denotes the telling of news with the use of many different modes at the same time. When studying research about these aspects of web journalism, three general observations can be made. First, researchers have approached these characteristics unevenly in terms of scope and interest. The interactive aspects of web journalism are by far the most investigated. Second, the four characteristics have been studied through the lenses of different theoretical frameworks. Third, empirical research shows that change in journalism is slow and not always as radical as many predicted when journalism on the web was in its infancy.

    In the past years the usage and growth of social media has increased, through the increase in popularity, growth and use, social media has become an all the more important arena. Politicians need to communicate with the public, where the public is, in order to be elected and right now a large amount of the public is on social media. This research studies how four of the largest political parties in Sweden, Socialdemokraterna, Moderaterna, Sverigedemokraterna and Miljöpartiet, together with an upcoming party Feministiskt initiativ, used social media in the governmental election in Sweden 2014. In order to study how these political parties used social media, the posts made on Facebook and Twitter were selected. The posts were selected from the two weeks leading up to the election. The posts on Twitter had a higher quantitity and were studied through a quantitative content analysis; while the posts on Facebook included richer text and were studied through a qualitative content analysis. The choice to include both a quantitative and a qualitative content analysis were made to give a richer result with a more including picture.

    The result showed that there is not one universal media logic used by the parties on the posts posted on Facebook and Twitter, however the elements used were the same, but in different extent. One of the parties, Miljöpartiet, had a consequent media logic of all of the selected post made by them on Facebook. On social media political parties become gatekeepers themselves, without relying on journalists to bring forth their ideals, election issues, and topics of importance. On social media the political parties decide what to publish and how to publish it. The political parties frame the topics to benefit themselves and argue for why their approach is the right choice and why the viewer of the post should vote for them.

    The insufficient amout of research regarding social media use in municipalities was in part why this study was conducted. This study examined how Swedish municipalities interact with its followers through Facebook’s different post types to create engagement. Grunigs excellence theory stood as the base for the theoretical framework. The method used was a quantitative content analysis. Data was collected from 30 different municipalities’ Facebook pages. The study found that municipalities use Facebook to engage their citizens in some ways more than others and that municipalities, in some regards, do not use Facebook to its full potential. To reach the various ways of engagement, municipalities need to be aware of how to achieve that. Such as what format best suits the engagement that the municipalities wish to achieve. Posting a larger variation of formats should be implemented in order to take advantage of all the benefits that the different formats provide.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to find out how the war in Afghanistan is framed both in national and international context. This was conducted by comparing the national tv channel TOLOnews from Afghanistan with the international tv channel SVT Nyheter from Sweden. A qualitative text analysis as well as a semiotic photo analysis were implemented on four news articles and two photos from each channel respectively. Framing theory, agenda setting, and news values provided the theoretical background to be able to carry out the study.

    The significant findings of the study show that SVT Nyheter uses various secondary foreign sources for their articles in comparison to TOLOnews which uses only first-hand sources as can be expected of international and national tv channels. Furthermore, SVT Nyheter concentrates mostly on facts such as the number of people killed in attacks whereas TOLOnews concentrates more on the personal stories of the local people affected by the attacks. Finally, the study discusses what could be the underlying reasons of the findings of the study and thereby the differences of the framing of the war in Afghanistan by the two tv channels.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of the study was to examine the ways in which the presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were portrayed in articles regarding the first presidential debate of 2016. We also wanted to examine the differences and similarities between the framing of the two candidates as well as which frames varied between the newspapers from Sweden and the USA and which they had in common. We made a qualitative framing analysis of 14 articles from 14 different newspapers half of which were from Sweden and half from the USA. The result shows that Hillary Clinton is most often portrayed as an experienced and professional politician whereas Donald Trump is portrayed as her opposite in both regards. The framing of Trump shows him as an outsider from the business world, who has a history of controversial behavior in which he is accused of both racism and sexism. Both candidates are portrayed as highly disliked by the American people. They are also portrayed as dishonest as a consequence of their respective scandals where they are being accused of having hidden something from the public – Clinton in her use of a private e-mail server during her time as secretary of state – Trump due to his unreleased tax returns. The American and the Swedish articles frame the candidates similarly, although the American newspapers are more prone to the usage of harsh language in describing the candidates and their actions in the debate. The Swedish newspapers tend to use less emotive words in re-telling the debate.

    Abstract [en]

    In this study we have investigated how local journalists in Kalmar think when they choose their sources to interview. We have also studied several factors that can affect their choices of sources.

    We have interviewed eight news journalists from the two largest local news papers Barometern and Östran in Kalmar.

    The journalists were asked about the sources they often use as interview objects. They were supposed to tell about how they think when choosing sources and define which sources they commonly use. There are different factors that can affect the choices and we have narrowed them down to ethics, source critics, credibility, stress, hard production conditions, public and their own interest and if they consider themselves to be individualistic or controlled by the news desks. Furthermore the journalists were asked to characterize what changes they would make when choosing sources in a perfect world.

    All of the journalists had not reflected prominently on the subject of sources before our research. But most of them could perceive different views. Hence the study became essential for them as well as us.

    We found various perspectives very interesting. For instance the interviews showed that the journalists frequently use the same sources on account of the limitation of time and number of sources in Kalmar. There is a lack of using intimidating sources which opinions the journalists do not agree with. The personal network of sources is crucial to the reporter in finding important information and relevant interview objects. The reporters in our research are more individualistic than controlled by the news desks. However the news bosses may affect their choices of sources by telling them which sources are credible and worthy to fit in the news papers. Sometimes they even arrange interviews with sources. The journalists seek within themselves to find out what the readers may be interested in. But captivatingly they cannot know for sure what the public will appreciate to read.

    Abstract [en]

    Because social media is personal and reaches users directly, it has become an important means of communication for companies trying to reach out to their audience (Nygren & Wadbring, 2013). Especially the possibility of interactivity has been discussed as social media's big advantage. But how much two-way communication is actually possible on social media? This is a quantitative study that focuses on how Swedish Facebook users in the ages of 16-25 interact with companies on the social network. The aim was to contribute with increased information and knowledge about how the users mentioned above interact with the companies as well as how the users perceive the companies communication and presence on Facebook. With the help of the Uses and gratifications theory and previous research focusing on the theory we created three theoretical themes that we used as an inspiration for our online survey. The survey was distributed on Facebook and the result was later on coded in SPSS. We analyzed the answers using our theoretical themes and theories within them.

    The result shows that it is the young Facebook users do not interact with companies on the social network. The users are not involved in a dialogue with them, what does motivate the users to interaction and sharing is a high involvement and that a person need to be one that already tend to share in order to be affected by others on Facebook. The results also show that the users however require that the potential for interaction should exist. At the same time the users think it is important that companies are available on the social network. They also think it is significant to be able to find information about companies on Facebook, whether or not they interact with them.

    Abstract [en]

    This studies purpose to increase understanding and to create greater awareness of the business media flow and it’s impact on the potential/active entrepreneur. This is made by creating a picture from a gender perspective of how female and male entrepreneurs relates to the news and media representation, with a focus on the entrepreneur’s drive force. In order to achieve the studies purpose, earlier research and theories are used to underline the thesis. The theories include feminist media research, mass communication theories and social psychological factors. To be able to respond to the issues and frame the problem area, the study researches through a Uses and Gratification Approach where the main focus is on the entrepreneurs reception. The study includes a quantitative analysis that consists of a survey with both closed and open questions. 

     

    The results show that the entrepreneurs are aware of the gender differences in the business media. Despite this, they feel like female entrepreneurship is reproduced from a more egalitarian perspective then the male entrepreneur. This might have an impact on male entrepreneurship as media is seen as a public opinion-maker. The results also show that the entrepreneurs are driven by both positive and negative media content. Furthermore the females in the age off 18-35 are the ones that is most affected by stereotypical elements in media contents. They are also the ones that is mostly driven by positive news. In a comparison with the male participants, the results show that there’s a lack of entrepreneurial examples and knowledge about entrepreneurship in women’s childhood. Therefore it becomes even more important for the potential female entrepreneur to see more role models in the media flow and in the society.
