Kan företag kontrollera sitt varumärke online?: En kvalitativ studie om villkoren för marknadskommunikation i sociala medier 2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the conditions that prevail when companies put their marketing in social media with the purpose of creating a perception of the risks and opportunities it brings to businesses and ultimately how it may affect the corporate image and identity.

Theories: The basis of the problem area are presented through a theoretical framework with the purpose of highlighting the notions of social media, communi- cation, marketing communication, groundswell, corporate identity and image.

Methodology: To investigate the research questions this study adopted a qualitative approach in which the authors study the properties of a phenomenon in order to seek a deeper understanding of the problems we have presented. There is an exploratory approach to knowledge and the authors have chosen to conduct qualitative research interviews based upon three themes: driving forces, challenges and impacts.

Conclusion: The study revealed that traditional models of communication are no longer applicable in social media. Companies are up for a challenge and must clarify their sole purpose when establishing communication in the social landscape. The general motivation for marketing in social media is making profit, however, building relationships is not a natural motive for most companies. The risks companies expe- rience is the exposure caused by social media and the study also reveals that this fear is firmly attached to their lack of knowledge of these new channels of communicat- ion and their primary areas of use which indicates that skilled employees plays a vi- tal role with their use of social media in their communication process. The results of this study contribute to an important part of the media and communication science research as it highlights and compares the components of the communication pro- cess in social media over traditional marketing communication.

Myndigheternas medier: En studie av svenska myndigheters nya medieanvändning2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to study a selection of Swedish government agencies and their usage of new media to convey information. We thought that the relationship between government agencies and the media should be addressed. This because of the current transitional period between traditional and new media. We have studied five different Swedish government agencies; Swedish Armed Forces, Swedish Tax Agency, Swedish National Institute of Public Health, Trafikverket and Sida.

We used a qualitive content analysis and analyzed their homepages on the basis of six different criteria. In addition to this we studied their presence on external social communities and how the government agencies comply with the requirements of their communicative efforts.

The study shows that the government agencies’ media usage varies. With the homepage as a common ground, the media use of government agencies approaches to using new media. It depends on the individual government agency's specific needs of providing information.

    Abstract [en]

The discussion about gender and ideals shown in mass media is a subject of great importance for the society in general. Media is playing an essential part when it comes to establish standards and values and we are constantly exposed to all types of impressions, whether we are aware or not. It is therefore of great importance that we understand how stereotypes are built and to gain a deep knowledge that would enrich the area of Media and Communication Studies.

The aim and focus of this study was to analyze how male stereotypes is communicated in print advertising and how visual means of expressions helps to construct the masculinities shown. From a semiotic analysis of seven print adverts appearing in the Swedish lifestyle Magazine Café were we able to gain a thorough understanding about how male stereotypes are communicated and built.

The result showed that different kinds of stereotypes are in fact used but it is still a hegemonic masculinity that is predominating. Traditional male characteristics are still in use but we were able to see strong indications of effemination, sexualizing and objectifying. Metro sexuality is a recurring feature in the adverts, and one of the factors that indicate that masculinity is something complex and multi layered.

Our study also shows that activity is still essential when it comes to form male qualities, but the impression of the same are nowadays of more importance than the actual activity itself. Attributes and surroundings are key components, and something that implicates that the social climate is focusing on material things.

Affischen - Ett döende medium?: En kvalitativ studie av evenemangsaffischering2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As students of graphic design the craft of print is close to our hearts. One of the most essential mediums of the evolution of printing techniques is the poster. In a world where digital mediums are being utilized to a greater degree everyday, our love for the printed poster makes us wonder if the days of the poster are counted.

What we did was to take a closer look at the role of the poster in promoting events. We focused on the Stockholm area and did qualitative interviews with three different event promoters. Live Nation which is an international live entertainment promoter, Dramaten which is one of Sweden’s most well respected theaters and Stockholm Live which is a stand up comedy promoter in Stockholm city.

From doing this we learned that economics play an important part in defining the role of the poster. Our research shows that events with a lower budget utilize a larger degree of promotion through posters. We also learned that the communicative effect of the poster is mainly positive when used in an integrated collaboration with other media channels.

What we finally drew as a conclusion is that the use of promotion with posters is declining. But there is no reason to believe it will completely disappear as its unique and effective communicative qualities is in no way obsolete.

    Abstract [en]

The study involves six Bosnian refugees experience of integration into Swedish society. The purpose of this study is, through the use of a qualitative method, to get an understanding of what the integration process in the Swedish society has been like for six Bosnian refugees.. These refugees fled from the war in former Yugoslavia and came to Sweden between the years 1992-1995. The country who was once called Yugoslavia is currently divided into six republics comprising, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Serbia, with its provinces, Vojvodina and Kosovo. The main focus of the study has been in the respondent’s thoughts and experiences of integration into Swedish society. I have made a qualitative study of these six Bosnian refugees concerning their experience of integration into the Swedish society. The theory and interpretation of integration as applied in this study is Alberto Diaz integration theory that addresses various factors essential if integration is successful or not for an refugee. The results of the study show that the informants believe that one can achieve a successful integration through personal involvement. The informants also believe it is important to learn the language, culture and standards of the country that you live in.

The Long-Distance Relationship : The Issue of Family Separation and Its Effects on Somali Integration in Sweden2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Statistics regarding Somalis’ integration in Sweden, indicates that this group have a hard time to become integrated, currently being characterized by high levels of unemployment, low levels of education and as being residentially segregated. Today, many Somalis reside in Sweden separated from their family. This due to the contemporary asylum framework, which does not recognize Somali identification documents as valid evidence for proving ones identity, when applying for asylum based on family ties. The decision from the Swedish Board of Migration, and its rejection of Somali identification documents as evidence for proving ones identity, can arguably be seen to illuminate the fact that Somalia is not seen as a legitimate nation-state. This view can therefore have effects on the concerned Somalis sense of national identity and citizenship.

This study investigates what consequences these two factors, stemming from the contemporary asylum framework, have on the affected Somalis ability and willingness to integrate, and if it can be seen as resulting in a state of anomie among the concerned group.

This has been done by interviewing Somalis that have been subject to the contemporary asylum framework and the outcome of family separation. The findings from these interviews have then been analyzed in relation to a conceptual framework and theoretical figure, which illustrates an interrelation between the concepts of citizenship, identity and integration, furthering integration in terms of a symmetric relationship between the three concepts, while possibly resulting in a state of anomie, in case of an asymmetric relationship between the three concepts.

The findings from this study indicate that the contemporary asylum frameworks denial of Somali identification documents can not be seen to have affected their sense of national identity and citizenship substantially. However, the issue of family separation can be seen to hamper the ability to integrate among affected Somalis, and can instead be seen to result in a sense of exclusion and un-representation among them, creating a state of anomie among this group.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

I FORM is the biggest health magazine of Scandinavia. It is a magazine that treats subjects like health food, training, sports gear, sex and relationships. The magazine addresses women directly and only women appear in the magazine.

This is a study on how I FORM portrays women in their segment called “Addicted to” (Biten av). It is a study of what kind of stereotypes that are used and also what kind of pictures that has been used to portrait the women. Lastly I try to answer the question of how the portraits in I FORM can recreate or transform the medial use of dominating gender discourses in society.

The method of use is the rhetorical text analysis as described in Jostein Gripsruds book Mediekultur och mediesamhälle, where I’m looking at the three first steps of the Partes model. The theoretical framework treats the subjects of primary and secondary socialization, social and personal identity, and the influence of media, gender and stereotypes, both in written text and in pictures.

The conclusion of this study is that there is a common use of different stereotypes in I FORM:s portraits. They use their segment “Addicted to” (Biten av) to promote different types of exercises and the women are portrayed differently depending on if the type of exercise is counted as more of a male or a female exercise.

    Abstract [en]

Summary: This study explores the EU "value diffusion strategy" includedin its foreign policy, seen through the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP).The main argument is that the ENP can be seen as a framework through whichthe EU is trying to diffuse its common values and norms. Instead of offering afuture EU membership as the main "carrot" for reforms - an efficient instrumentto diffuse its values to neighboring European states - it is trying to exertinfluence by other means, such as using discursive practices, opening up EUagencies, programs and policies for the participation of the partner countries, granting financial aid, as well as by institutionalizing the relationship. Mainlypositive conditionality is present, aiming at promoting norm compliance andreforms by the partner countries. However, negative conditionality may beapplied as well.

My country, my development: The diffusion of information and communication technologies in Cambodian NGOs2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research is to study the role of information and communication technology (ICT) and information and communication technology for development (ICT4D) in Cambodian non-government organizations (NGOs). By focusing on a workshop on the ICT applications Unicode and Open Office, initiated by the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia (the CCC), I intend to see how these applications were adopted, how they are used and what the future is for ICT and ICT4D in Cambodia. The research is based on qualitative, semi structured interviews with employees at CCC as well as NGO workers who were participants at the workshops. The theories that I have used are Amartya Sen’s capability approach, Everett Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory and intercultural communication.

This study shows that ICT is considered to be a very important tool for the development of Cambodia. Unicode has contributed with an easier way to type and read documents in Khmer and it is considered to promote the Khmer language. Open Office have not found its renaissance yet since people find it difficult to use although the NGOs sees its’ potential and wants to learn it. According to the NGO workers, ICT and ICT4D will play an important role for the Cambodian development in the future but because of a lack of infrastructure and proper knowledge about the new technology, it has not been used to its full capacity. In order for us to understand how ICT can reach its full potential within NGOs, there have to exist an understanding of Cambodian culture and history since the Khmer people’s values affect how the NGO workers look at development and the tools they are using.

En modern roll och ett modernt mandat?: -Studie över näringslivsansvariga i Kronobergs län2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to explore the perceived role and mandate of civil servants employed in municipalities in Kronoberg county. The study aimed to answer the question whether civil servants engaged in municipal economics have different perspectives on their mandate and role based on how said civil servants implement and manage policy tools available in Swedish municipalities. The study aimed to through policy tools theory explain how civil servants through four categories view the policy tools employed in the municipality. The study is based on the reasoning that policy tools influences exercise of authority that in turn influences view on policy tools. In order to study civil servants perspective on perceived mandate and role interviews were conducted with a sample of civil servants from each of the eight municipalities in Kronoberg county. The results shows that out of eight civil servants, each representing one municipality six civil servants see their perceived mandate as free and their role as to create conditions for local economic development. Two out of eight civil servants perceive their role and mandate as limited in creating conditions for local economic development.

Brittiska Labour – svikare eller frälsare?: Om ett svikt vallöfte eller en räddning av Storbritanniens inflytande i EU.2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor thesis deals with the act of the British Labour Party when they recalled a referendum promised by former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Tony Blair promised a referendum on the Constitutional Treaty, but his successor Gordon Brown later recalled it when the Lisbon Treaty succeeded the Constitutional Treaty as the legal foundation of the European Union.

The main purpose of this thesis was to with help from various theorethical frameworks explain why the Labour Party decided to do this, even if this decision gave the main opposition party, the Conservative and Unionist Party (the Tories), the chance to heavily critisize the Labour Party, and picture them as traitors.

    The research questions were:

    • What are the reasons that the Labour Party went from being a Eurosceptical party, to become more pro-European?

    • Why did the Labour Party cancel the promised referendum on the new treaty of the European Union?

Various answers were found for the first research question. Among the most important was that it was a part of the over all transition which led to the launch of New Labour.

The second research question was answered with three explanatory models based on actions of the Labour Party on three arenas; the electoral arena (based on power, this model claims that the Labour Party act as they do because the know the Tories would not act differently if they were in office), the parliamentary arena (based on ideology, this model claims that Labour want the Lisbon Treaty because it has a stronger social dimension than earlier treaties) and the internal arena (based on the problem of identification, this model claims that the Labour Party identifies itself with the British government, and not just the voters, and are afraid of damaging Britain’s influence in the EU and international politics if Britain says ‘no’ to the Lisbon Treaty).

"Så fixade vi Allhallen": Resursmobilisering och organisationsförtätning i ett lokalsamhälle2011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In 2004 the non-profit association Allhall i Hovet was founded in a middle-sized town situated in southeastern Sweden with just over 3000 inhabitants. The goal of the organization was to build a multi-functional facility that could be used for sporting, cultural and commercial activities.

This dissertation in sociology describes and explains the strategies, activities and unexpected events that transformed the idea in a newly founded organization into a concrete building. How could an entirely new organization in the town of Hovmantorp in relatively short period of time mobilize sufficient economic (more than SEK 18 million including EU-funding) and human resources? How has this accumulation of resources come about and how can it be explained? The study explains how this mobilization of resources and new organization came about in a geographically well-defined area with many preexisting organizations and local interests to take into consideration. The aim has been divided into four questions. Each one of the dissertations four empirical chapters answers one of them:

    -          What has the organizational process around the facility project looked like and how can it be explained?

    -          How has the organization Allhall i Hovet mobilized local opinion and political support for its project?

    -          How has the organization Allhall i Hovet dealt with conflicts of interests in its project?

    -          How has the organization Allhall i Hovet mobilized material resources and voluntary work for its project?

In the concluding chapter it is argued that resource mobilization in part comprises sequences, in part resource conversions during which immaterial and material resources of various types become interwoven and combined in different ways to release economic resources. Furthermore it is argued that resource mobilization is largely accomplished by inter-organizational processes. These conditions in combination with resource mobilization in this case, which is  geographically limited, make it necessary, from a bisecting organizing principle, to unify an organizational field behind a common interest. The project succeeded in attaining its goal via inter-organizational resource mobilization built upon a consolidated organizational field. At the same time it also produced organizational densification and strengthening of the town’s existing network in such a way that the potential for future successful mobilizations is enhanced.
