    Abstract [en]

    Nowadays, there has been an increasing interest in using 360degrees video in medical education. Recent efforts are starting to explore how nurse students experience and interact with 360degrees videos. However, once these interactions have been registered in a database, there is a lack of ways to analyze these data, which generates a necessity of creating a reliable method that can manage all this collected data, and visualize the valuable insights of the data. Hence, the main goal of this thesis is to address this challenge by designing an approach to analyze and visualize this kind of data. This will allow teachers in health care education, and medical specialists to understand the collected data in a meaningful way. To get the most suitable solution, several meetings with nursing teachers took place to draw the first draft structure of an application which acts as the needed approach. Then, the application was used to analyze collected data in a study made in December. Finally, the application was evaluated through a questionnaire that involved a group of medical specialists related to education. The initial outcome from those testing and evaluations indicate that the application successfully achieves the main goals of the project, and it has allowed discussing some ideas that will help in the future to improve the 360degrees video experience and evaluation in the nursing education field providing an additional tool to analyze, compare and assess students.

    Abstract [en]

    In an increasingly networked world, the availability of high quality translations is critical for success, especially in the context of international competition. International companies need to provide well translated, high quality technical documentation not only to be successful in the market but also to meet legal regulations. We seek to evaluate translation quality, specifically concerning technical documentation, and formulate a method to evaluate the translation quality of technical documents both when we do have access to the original documents and when we do not. We rely on state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and translation evaluation metrics in the context of a knowledge discovery process. Our evaluation is performed on a sentence level where each sentence is classified as either professionally translated or machine translated. The results for each sentence is then combined to evaluate the full document. The research is based on a database that contains 22,327 sentences and 32 translation evaluation attributes, which are used to optimize Decision Trees that are used to evaluate translation quality. Our method achieves an accuracy of 70.48% on sentence level for texts in the database and can accurately classify documents with at least 100 sentences.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we present opportunities and challenges to meet the worldwide challenge of diabetes. Diabetes has devastating long-term complications that cause very great personal suffering and social costs locally and globally. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing globally as an epidemic and affects 415 million people today, which is expected to increase to 642 million in 2040. In this paper we explore possibilities to join in Indo-Swedish R&D collaboration. We present and motivate the research purpose. Furthermore we present a research framework for mobile application development between Sweden and India. The scientific framework is elaborated and this paper ends with specific challenges and further work.

    Undetected diabetes is a global issue, estimated to over 200 million persons affected. Engineering opportunities in capturing early signs of diabetes has a potential due to the complexity to interpret early signs and link it to diabetes. Persons with untreated diabetes are doubled in risk of getting cardiovascular diseases and may also suffer other consequent diseases. In Sweden, approximately 450 thousand have diabetes where 80-90% are of type 2 with 1/4 unaware of it, i.e. approx. 100 thousand. Screening approaches, searching specifically for diabetes in persons not showing symptoms has been initiated with positive results. However, some general drawbacks of screening such as false sense of security are an issue. In this publication, we focus upon in home measurements and empowering of the individual in identifying early signs of diabetes. The methods in this publication are to gather data, evaluate and give suggestion if clinical test to confirm or reject diabetes. In home measurements, education process with companies for innovation possibilities.

    Fast and Precise Points-to Analysis2014Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    Many software engineering applications require points-to analysis. These client applications range from optimizing compilers to integrated program development environments (IDEs) and from testing environments to reverse-engineering tools. The software engineering applications are often user-interactive, or used in an edit-compile cycle, and need the points-to analysis to be fast and precise.

    In this compilation thesis, we present a new context- and flow-sensitive approach to points-to analysis that is both fast and precise. This is accomplished by a new SSA-based flow-sensitive dataflow algorithm (Paper 1) and a new context-sensitive analysis (Paper 2). Compared to other well-known analysis approaches our approach is faster in practice, on average, twice as fast as the call string approach and by an order of magnitude faster than the object-sensitive technique. In fact, it shows to be only marginally slower than a context-insensitive baseline analysis. At the same time, it provides higher precision than the call string technique and is similar in precision to the object-sensitive technique. We confirm these statements with experiments in Paper 2.

    Paper 3 is a systematic comparison of ten different variants of context-sensitive points-to analysis using different call-depths  for separating the contexts. Previous works indicate that analyses with a call-depth  only provides slightly better precision than context-insensitive analysis and they find no substantial precision improvement when using a more expensive analyses with call-depth . The hypothesis in Paper 3 is that substantial differences between the context-sensitive approaches show if (and only if) the precision is measured by more fine-grained metrics focusing on individual objects (rather than methods and classes) and references between them. These metrics are justified by the many applications requiring such detailed object reference information.

    The main results in Paper 3 show that the differences between different context-sensitive analysis techniques are substantial, also the differences between the context-insensitive and the context-sensitive analyses with call-depth are substantial. The major surprise was that increasing the call-depth  did not lead to any substantial precision improvements. This is a negative result since it indicates that, in practice, we cannot get a more precise points-to analysis by increasing the call-depth. Further investigations show that substantial precision improvements can be detected for but they occur at such a low detail level that they are unlikely to be of any practical use.

    I denna uppsats redovisas vilken effekt ett integrerat valideringsverktyg har på inlärningen hos personer som lär sig grunderna i HTML. Tidigare forskning har kartlagt att studenter som är nybörjare inom området ofta får valideringsfel under tiden de arbetar med sina studier och har även valideringsfel i inlämnade uppgifter. Arbetet bygger på insamlad data från 28 frivilliga deltagare som studerade grundläggande webbteknik på universitetsnivå. För att få ett brett spektrum av svarsdata användes tre metoder: experiment, enkäter och fokusgrupp. För att samla in data i experimenten användes ett eget utvecklat verktyg – RawHTML. Med hjälp av detta verktyg kunde information om huruvida en webbsidas källkod validerades utan fel eller ej visualiseras. Detta innebar att deltagare inte behövde validera sin kod via någon av de tjänster som redans finns tillgängliga på internet. För att mäta effekten av verktyget delades deltagarna in i en testgrupp och en kontrollgrupp. Deltagare i kontrollgruppen fick inte någon visualisering av eventuella valideringsfel, detta var endast tillgängligt för testgrupperna.

    Resultatet visar att användning av ett integrerat valideringsverktyg i webbläsaren kan ha positiv påverkan på användarens inlärning. Deltagarna i testgrupperna hade i lägre grad upprepade valideringsfel mellan uppdateringar jämfört med kontrollgrupperna. Deltagarna i testgrupperna hade även i lägre grad fel vid inlämning av uppgifter jämfört med kontrollgrupperna.

    Datan från fokusgruppen och enkäterna tydde på att deltagarna i testgrupperna uppskattade RawHTML:s hjälpsamhet då verktyget förmedlade feedbacken på ett sådant sätt att deltagarna kunde åtgärda de fel som uppstått. RawHTML:s främsta styrka var, enligt deltagarna, den direkta feedbacken i samband med uppdatering av webbsidor. Resultatet i denna uppsats kan i sin tur leda till nya och förbättrade valideringsverktyg med nybörjare som målgrupp.

    Det finns en efterfrågan på hög-precisa GNSS-enheter i skogshantering som utförs av skogsinspektörer, skogsägare, och plantskolor. Problemet är att en genomsnittlig enhet kostar 30 000 SEK och uppåt.

    Därför söker man efter en billigare lösning med samma noggrannhet. Lösningen bör vara tillgänglig och lätt då det är önskvärt att monterasystemet på ett planteringsrör eller stav.

    Lösningen bestod av Arduino och U-Blox:s NEO-M8P-2 monterat på kretskort från SparkFun. Kommunikation mellan enheterna realiserades meden NTRIP-program som tredje part. Med Bluetooth för NTRIP-klienten och LTE (mobiltelefoni) för NTRIP-servern kommunicerade en rover och en basstation med nätet, för att överföra hämta och skicka korrigeringsdata från stationen till rovern.

    Lösningen lyckades med att uppnå grundligt resultat och några förväntningar. Man lyckades med att ta fram en lösning som kostar mindre än 6000 SEK, eller 2500 SEK om man väljer bort basstationen och endast behållermottagaren; rovern.

    Alla målen och förväntningar för resultat kunde inte uppfyllas på grund av problem och utmaningar i både lösningen och komplikationer orsakade avfaktorer utanför projektets ram.

    Context: Handling multiple quality attributes (QAs) in the domain of self-adaptive systems is an understudied research area. One well-known approach to engineer adaptive software systems and fulfill QAs of the system is architecture-based self-adaptation. In order to develop models that capture the required knowledge of the QAs of interest, and to investigate how these models can be employed at runtime to handle multiple quality attributes, we need to first examine current architecture-based self-adaptive methods. Objective: In this paper we review the state-of-the-art of architecture-based methods for handling multiple QAs in self-adaptive systems. We also provide a descriptive analysis of the collected data from the literature. Method: We conducted a systematic literature review by performing an automatic search on 28 selected venues and books in the domain of self-adaptive systems. As a result, we selected 54 primary studies which we used for data extraction and analysis. Results: Performance and cost are the most frequently addressed set of QAs. Current self-adaptive systems dealing with multiple QAs mostly belong to the domain of robotics and web-based systems paradigm. The most widely used mechanisms/models to measure and quantify QAs sets are QA data variables. After QA data variables, utility functions and Markov chain models are the most common models which are also used for decision making process and selection of the best solution in presence of many alternatives. The most widely used tools to deal with multiple QAs are PRISM and IBM's autonomic computing toolkit. KLAPER is the only language that has been specifically developed to deal with quality properties analysis. Conclusions: Our results help researchers to understand the current state of research regarding architecture-based methods for handling multiple QAs in self-adaptive systems, and to identity areas for improvement in the future. To summarize, further research is required to improve existing methods performing tradeoff analysis and preemption, and in particular, new methods may be proposed to make use of models to handle multiple QAs and to enhance and facilitate the tradeoffs analysis and decision making mechanism at runtime.     Hand segmentation is an integral part of many computer vision applications, especially gesture recognition. Training a classifier to classify pixels into hand or background using skin color as a feature is one of the most popular methods for this purpose. This approach has been highly restricted to simple hand segmentation scenarios since color feature alone provides very limited information for classification. Meanwhile there have been a rise of segmentation methods utilizing deep learning networks to exploit multi-layers of complex features learned from image data. Yet a deep neural network requires a large database for training and a powerful computational machine for operations due to its complexity in computations. In this work, the development of comprehensive features and optimized uses of these features with a randomized decision forest (RDF) classifier for the task of hand segmentation in uncontrolled indoor environments is investigated. Newly designed image features and new implementations are provided with evaluations of their hand segmentation performances. In total, seven image features which extract pixel or neighborhood related properties from color images are proposed and evaluated individually as well as in combination. The behaviours of feature and RDF parameters are also evaluated and optimum parameters for the scenario under consideration are identified. Additionally, a new dataset containing hand images in uncontrolled indoor scenarios was created during this work. It was observed from the research that a combination of features extracting color, texture, neighborhood histogram and neighborhood probability information outperforms existing methods for hand segmentation in restricted as well as unrestricted indoor environments using just a small training dataset. Computations required for the proposed features and the RDF classifier are light, hence the segmentation algorithm is suited for embedded devices equipped with limited power, memory, and computational capacities.

    Many common data analysis and machine learning algorithms for time series, such as classification, clustering, or dimensionality reduction, require a distance measurement between pairs of time series in order to determine their similarity. A variety of measures can be found in the literature, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) distance measure has occupied an important place since its early applications for the analysis and recognition of spoken word. The main disadvantage of the DTW algorithm is, however, its quadratic time and space complexity, which limits its practical use to relatively small time series. This issue is even more problematic when dealing with streaming time series that are continuously updated, since the analysis must be re-executed regularly and with strict running time constraints. In this paper, we describe enhancements to the DTW algorithm that allow it to be used efficiently in a streaming scenario by supporting an append operation for new time steps with a linear complexity when an exact, error-free DTW is needed, and even better performance when either a Sakoe-Chiba band is used, or when a sliding window is the desired range for the data. Our experiments with one synthetic and four natural data sets have shown that it outperforms other DTW implementations and the potential errors are, in general, much lower than another state-of-the-art approximated DTW technique.

    StanceXplore: Visualization for the Interactive Exploration of Stance in Social Media2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    The use of interactive visualization techniques in Digital Humanities research can be a useful addition when traditional automated machine learning techniques face difficulties, as is often the case with the exploration of large volumes of dynamic—and in many cases, noisy and conflicting—textual data from social media. Recently, the field of stance analysis has been moving from a predominantly binary approach—either pro or con—to a multifaceted one, where each unit of text may be classified as one (or more) of multiple possible stance categories. This change adds more layers of complexity to an already hard problem, but also opens up new opportunities for obtaining richer and more relevant results from the analysis of stancetaking in social media. In this paper we propose StanceXplore, a new visualization for the interactive exploration of stance in social media. Our goal is to offer DH researchers the chance to explore stance-classified text corpora from different perspectives at the same time, using coordinated multiple views including user-defined topics, content similarity and dissimilarity, and geographical and temporal distribution. As a case study, we explore the activity of Twitter users in Sweden, analyzing their behavior in terms of topics discussed and the stances taken. Each textual unit (tweet) is labeled with one of eleven stance categories from a cognitive-functional stance framework based on recent work. We illustrate how StanceXplore can be used effectively to investigate multidimensional patterns and trends in stance-taking related to cultural events, their geographical distribution, and the confidence of the stance classifier.

    Mobile applications is a rapidly growing market, and offers the opportunity

    for companies to vastly improve their productivity simply by being able to

    work anywhere. The enterprise industry does not always have the same

    requirements for a product as the personal market has. In this report, the idea

    is to building a solution that takes these requirements in to consideration in

    order to create a starting point for a more sustainable solution. A solution that

    is self-hosted in order to keep data away from third-parties, supports offline

    capabilities to make sure the productivity does not get interrupted, an

    implementation for handling data merging as to not get any data corruption

    while also being reusable in different situations to make it as cost and time

    efficient as possible. These problems are of out most importance to solve to

    make the solution work in real life. To solve this, research around the subject

    and different ways to approach the problems was conducted, including

    different technologies, frameworks and architectures. Based on those results,

    a complete working solution was implemented. This proved that the above

    problems could be solved, with some limitations, by an open-sourced

    solution. That will keep data away from big third-party solutions, without

    having to lose productivity.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a user-centered design (UCD) process of an interface for Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients for helping them to better manage their symptoms. The interface is designed to visualize symptom and medication information, collected by an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system, which will consist of a smartphone, electronic dosing device, wrist sensor and a bed sensor. In our work, the focus is on measuring data related to some of the main health-related quality of life aspects such as motor function, sleep, medication compliance, meal intake timing in relation to medication intake, and physical exercise. A mock-up demonstrator for the interface was developed using UCD methodology in collaboration with PD patients. The research work was performed as an iterative design and evaluation process based on interviews and observations with 11 PD patients. Additional usability evaluations were conducted with three information visualization experts. Contributions include a list of requirements for the interface, results evaluating the performance of the patients when using the demonstrator during task-based evaluation sessions as well as opinions of the experts. The list of requirements included ability of the patients to track an ideal day, so they could repeat certain activities in the future as well as determine how the scores are related to each other. The patients found the visualizations as clear and easy to understand and could successfully perform the tasks. The evaluation with experts showed that the visualizations are in line with the current standards and guidelines for the intended group of users. In conclusion, the results from this work indicate that the proposed system can be considered as a tool for assisting patients in better management of the disease by giving them insights on their own aggregated symptom and medication information. However, the actual effects of providing such feedback to patients on their health-related quality of life should be investigated in a clinical trial.

    Programming and Optimization of Big-Data Applications on Heterogeneous Computing Systems2018Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    The next-generation sequencing instruments enable biological researchers to generate voluminous amounts of data. In the near future, it is projected that genomics will be the largest source of big-data. A major challenge of big data is the efficient analysis of very large data-sets. Modern heterogeneous parallel computing systems, which comprise multiple CPUs, GPUs, and Intel Xeon Phis, can cope with the requirements of big-data analysis applications. However, utilizing these resources to their highest possible extent demands advanced knowledge of various hardware architectures and programming frameworks. Furthermore, optimized software execution on such systems demands consideration of many compile-time and run-time system parameters.

    In this thesis, we study and develop parallel pattern matching algorithms for heterogeneous computing systems. We apply our pattern matching algorithm for DNA sequence analysis. Experimental evaluation results show that our parallel algorithm can achieve more than 50x speedup when executed on host CPUs and more than 30x when executed on Intel Xeon Phi compared to the sequential version executed on the CPU.

    Thereafter, we combine machine learning and search-based meta-heuristics to determine near-optimal parameter configurations of parallel matching algorithms for efficient execution on heterogeneous computing systems. We use our approach to distribute the workload of the DNA sequence analysis application across the available host CPUs and accelerating devices and to determine the system configuration parameters of a heterogeneous system that comprise Intel Xeon CPUs and Xeon Phi accelerator. Experimental results show that the execution that uses the resources of both host CPUs and accelerating device outperforms the host-only and the device-only executions.

    Furthermore, we propose programming abstractions, a source-to-source compiler, and a run-time system for heterogeneous stream computing. Given a source code annotated with compiler directives, the source-to-source compiler can generate device-specific code. The run-time system can automatically distribute the workload across the available host CPUs and accelerating devices. Experimental results show that our solution significantly reduces the programming effort and the generated code delivers better performance than the CPUs-only or GPUs-only executions.

    Many modern parallel computing systems are heterogeneous at their node level. Such nodes may comprise general purpose CPUs and accelerators (such as, GPU, or Intel Xeon Phi) that provide high performance with suitable energy-consumption characteristics. However, exploiting the available performance of heterogeneous architectures may be challenging. There are various parallel programming frameworks (such as, OpenMP, OpenCL, OpenACC, CUDA) and selecting the one that is suitable for a target context is not straightforward. In this paper, we study empirically the characteristics of OpenMP, OpenACC, OpenCL, and CUDA with respect to programming productivity, performance, and energy. To evaluate the programming productivity we use our homegrown tool CodeStat, which enables us to determine the percentage of code lines required to parallelize the code using a specific framework. We use our tools MeterPU and x-MeterPU to evaluate the energy consumption and the performance. Experiments are conducted using the industry-standard SPEC benchmark suite and the Rodinia benchmark suite for accelerated computing on heterogeneous systems that combine Intel Xeon E5 Processors with a GPU accelerator or an Intel Xeon Phi co-processor.

    The DNA sequence analysis is a data and computationally intensive problem and therefore demands suitable parallel computing resources and algorithms. In this paper, we describe an optimized approach for DNA sequence analysis on a heterogeneous platform that is accelerated with the Intel Xeon Phi. Such platforms commonly comprise one or two general purpose host central processing units (CPUs) and one or more Xeon Phi devices. We present a parallel algorithm that shares the work of DNA sequence analysis between the host CPUs and the Xeon Phi device to reduce the overall analysis time. For automatic worksharing we use a supervised machine learning approach, which predicts the performance of DNA sequence analysis on the host and device and accordingly maps fractions of the DNA sequence to the host and device. We evaluate our approach empirically using real-world DNA segments for human and various animals on a heterogeneous platform that comprises two 12-core Intel Xeon E5 CPUs and an Intel Xeon Phi 7120P device with 61 cores.

    Analysis of DNA sequences is a data and computational intensive problem, and therefore, it requires suitable parallel computing resources and algorithms. In this paper, we describe our parallel algorithm for DNA sequence analysis that determines how many times a pattern appears in the DNA sequence. The algorithm is engineered for heterogeneous platforms that comprise a host with multi-core processors and one or more many-core devices. For combinatorial optimization, we use the simulated annealing algorithm. The optimization goal is to determine the number of threads, thread affinities, and DNA sequence fractions for host and device, such that the overall execution time of DNA sequence analysis is minimized. We evaluate our approach experimentally using real-world DNA sequences of various organisms on a heterogeneous platform that comprises two Intel Xeon E5 processors and an Intel Xeon Phi 7120P co-processing device. By running only about 5% of possible experiments, our optimization method finds a near-optimal system configuration for DNA sequence analysis that yields with average speedup of 1.6 ×  and 2 ×  compared with the host-only and device-only execution.

    We describe an approach that uses combinatorial optimization and machine learning to share the work between the host and device of heterogeneous computing systems such that the overall application execution time is minimized. We propose to use combinatorial optimization to search for the optimal system configuration in the given parameter space (such as, the number of threads, thread affinity, work distribution for the host and device). For each system configuration that is suggested by combinatorial optimization, we use machine learning for evaluation of the system performance. We evaluate our approach experimentally using a heterogeneous platform that comprises two 12-core Intel Xeon E5 CPUs and an Intel Xeon Phi 7120P co-processor with 61 cores. Using our approach we are able to find a near-optimal system configuration by performing only about 5% of all possible experiments.

    Big data streaming applications require utilization of heterogeneous parallel computing systems, which may comprise multiple multi-core CPUs and many-core accelerating devices such as NVIDIA GPUs and Intel Xeon Phis. Programming such systems require advanced knowledge of several hardware architectures and device-specific programming models, including OpenMP and CUDA. In this paper, we present HSTREAM, a compiler directive-based language extension to support programming stream computing applications for heterogeneous parallel computing systems. HSTREAM source-to-source compiler aims to increase the programming productivity by enabling programmers to annotate the parallel regions for heterogeneous execution and generate target specific code. The HSTREAM runtime automatically distributes the workload across CPUs and accelerating devices. We demonstrate the usefulness of HSTREAM language extension with various applications from the STREAM benchmark. Experimental evaluation results show that HSTREAM can keep the same programming simplicity as OpenMP, and the generated code can deliver performance beyond what CPUs-only and GPUs-only executions can deliver.

    The efficient utilization of the available resources in modern parallel computing systems requires advanced parallel programming expertise. However, parallel programming is more difficult than sequential programming. To alleviate the difficulties of parallel programming, high-level programming frameworks, such as OpenMP, have been proposed. Yet, there is evidence that novice parallel programmers make common mistakes that may lead to performance degradation or unexpected program behavior. In this paper, we present our cognitive Parallel Programming Assistant (PAPA) that aims at educating and assisting novice parallel programmers to avoid common OpenMP mistakes. PAPA combines different IBM Watson services to provide a dialog-based interaction (through text and voice) for programmers. We use the Watson Conversation service to implement the dialog-based interaction, and the Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech services to enable the voice interaction. The Watson Natural Language Understanding and WordsAPI Synonyms services are used to train PAPA with OpenMP-related publications. We evaluate our approach using a user experience questionnaire with a number of novice parallel programmers at Linnaeus University.

    Regular expression matching is essential for many applications, such as finding patterns in text, exploring substrings in large DNA sequences, or lexical analysis. However, sequential regular expression matching may be time-prohibitive for large problem sizes. In this paper, we describe a novel algorithm for parallel regular expression matching via deterministic finite automata. Furthermore, we present our tool PaREM that accepts regular expressions and finite automata as input and automatically generates the corresponding code for our algorithm that is amenable for parallel execution on shared-memory systems. We evaluate our parallel algorithm empirically by comparing it with a commonly used algorithm for sequential regular expression matching. Experiments on a dual-socket shared-memory system with 24 physical cores show speed-ups of up to 21× for 48 threads.

    Optimized software execution on parallel computing systems demands consideration of many parameters at run-time. Determining the optimal set of parameters in a given execution context is a complex task, and therefore to address this issue researchers have proposed different approaches that use heuristic search or machine learning. In this paper, we undertake a systematic literature review to aggregate, analyze and classify the existing software optimization methods for parallel computing systems. We review approaches that use machine learning or meta-heuristics for scheduling parallel computing systems. Additionally, we discuss challenges and future research directions. The results of this study may help to better understand the state-of-the-art techniques that use machine learning and meta-heuristics to deal with the complexity of scheduling parallel computing systems. Furthermore, it may aid in understanding the limitations of existing approaches and identification of areas for improvement.

    IoTutor: How Cognitive Computing Can Be Applied to Internet of Things Education2019Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    We present IoTutor that is a cognitive computing solution for education of students in the IoT domain. We implement the IoTutor as a platform-independent web-based application that is able to interact with users via text or speech using natural language. We train the IoTutor with selected scientific publications relevant to the IoT education. To investigate users' experience with the IoTutor, we ask a group of students taking an IoT master level course at the Linnaeus University to use the IoTutor for a period of two weeks. We ask students to express their opinions with respect to the attractiveness, perspicuity, efficiency, stimulation, and novelty of the IoTutor. The evaluation results show a trend that students express an overall positive attitude towards the IoTutor with majority of the aspects rated higher than the neutral value.

    Optimizing rendering is one of the greatest challenges faced by game developers. Most game engines make use of hardware rendering which uses technology specifically built for rendering. Before such hardware existed, game developers had to rely on the CPU to render their games. This is known as software rendering. Software rendering is not commonly used nowadays but has been seen in cases such as a backup for when the end users machine does not support the hardware based renderer of the application. Since the CPU is not purposely built for rendering, unlike the GPU, the developer has to perform optimizations to make the renderer more efficient in terms of speed. In this thesis, we present an approach which is a subset of parallel programming called Single Instruction, Multiple Data. This technique operates on vector based registers which means operations can be performed on multiple pieces of data at once. This is applied to an already built game engine in order to optimize its rendering. The results show a speed-up of 90.5% and a framerate increase from 30 frames per second to 133 frames per second within the rendering routine.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores a web-based method to do studies in cultural evolution. Cumulative cultural evolution (CCE) is defined as social learning that allows for the accumulation of changes over time where successful modifications are maintained until additional change is introduced. In the past few decades, many interdisciplinary studies were conducted on cultural evolution. However, until recently most of those studies were limited to lab experiments. This thesis aims to address the limitations of the experimental methods by replicating a lab-based experiment online. A web-based application was developed and used for replicating an experiment on conformity by Solomon Asch [1951]. The developed application engages participants in an optical illusion test within different groups of social influence. The major finding of the study reveals that conformity increases on trials with higher social influence. In addition, it was also found that when the task becomes more difficult, the subject's conformity increases. These findings were also reported in the original experiment. The results of the study showed that lab-based experiments in cultural evolution studies can be replicated over the web with quantitatively similar results.

    Railway infrastructure operators need to push their network capacity up to their limits in high-traffic corridors. Virtual coupling is considered among the most relevant innovations to be studied within the European Horizon 2020 Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking as it can drastically reduce headways and thus increase the line capacity by allowing to dynamically connect two or more trains in a single convoy. This paper provides a proof of concept of Virtual coupling by introducing a specific operating mode within the European rail traffic management system/European train control system (ERTMS/ETCS) standard specification, and by defining a coupling control algorithm accounting for time-varying delays affecting the communication links. To that aim, we define one ploy to enrich the ERTMS/ETCS with Virtual coupling without changing its working principles and we borrow a numerical analysis methodology used to study platooning in the automotive field. The numerical analysis is also provided to support the proof of concept with quantitative results in a case-study simulation scenario.

    In order to develop, deploy and sustain a digital mobile service attractive to the users, one of the key parameters is to understand and to identify the satisfied users of such service and to maintain a user satisfaction-centric knowledge management. The classical way of achieving this is to collect users´ direct or indirect feedback and to measure their level of satisfaction. Digital mobile services have a global focus and address global audiences - which means getting users´ feedback and finding users´ satisfaction by performing studies using questionnaire for millions of users. Such an approach cannot be the most efficient way for doing so. This paper proposes an alternative approach of using data science knowledge and techniques, which performs a prediction on the usage data to distinguish between satisfactory and unsatisfactory users at a different level of granularity. First of all, this model generates some common predictors from users' access log data through descriptive analysis. Later, these predictive variables are used to predict the level of user satisfaction using Machine Learning Algorithms. Using this user-centric knowledge management model, digital service providers could measure whether their offered services would reach success by predicting the number of satisfied users.

    Engineering Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) is challenging, as these systems have to handle uncertainty and change during operation. A typical approach to deal with uncertainty is enhancing the system with self-adaptation capabilities. However, realizing self-adaptation in CPS, and consequently also in Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) as a member of the CPS family, is particularly challenging due to the specific characteristics of these systems, including the seamless integration of computational and physical components, the inherent heterogeneity and large-scale of such systems, and their open-endedness. In this chapter we survey CPS studies that apply the promising design strategy of combining different self-adaptation mechanisms across the technology stack of the system. Based on the survey results, we derive recurring adaptation patterns that structure and consolidate design knowledge. The patterns offer problem-solution pairs to engineers for the design of future CPS and CPPS with self-adaptation capabilities. Finally, the chapter outlines the potential of collective intelligence systems for CPPS and their engineering based on the survey results. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

As the power of the computers has increased, live video can be analyzed to inform the controller about anomalies which a human eye could have missed. SAAB – Air Traffic Management has a digital solution to provide Air Traffic Service which is called Remote Tower. This project will come up with a recommendation on how SAAB can dynamically render overlay based on live video, which marks the runways and taxiways on the airfield.

    In this world of the digital era, a large percentage of the world population and almost everyone in Sweden today owns a smartphone, and possibly even a smartwatch. By using this to our advantage, it would be possible to check whether an area is currently very busy or not, based on how many smartphones or other wearables technology it is possible to discover in the area. The approach chosen to dig into this problem was to research suitable hardware devices with Bluetooth and WiFi compatibility, that could detect probe requests broadcasted by smartphones or wearable devices in the area. The knowledge gained from the research in this thesis set the foundation for implementing a prototype with the desired functionality. Testing of the prototype was then conducted in a university library and analysed how it performed. Through testing the developed prototype, it revealed that it is possible to obtain an indication of whether an area is currently very crowded or not using Bluetooth and WiFi signals. A suggestion on how to proceed in creating more fine-tuned improvements is also described.

    This research explores the Automation Interface created by Beckhoff through introducinga compiler solution. Today machine builders have to be able to build machinesor plants in different sizes and provide many variations of the machine orplant types. Automatic code generation can be used in the aspect to reuse code thathas been tested and is configurable to match the desired functionality. Additionally,the use of a pre-existing API could potentially result in less engineering resourceswasted in developing automatic code generation. This thesis aims to evaluate theAutomation Interface (AI) tool created by Beckhoff. This is accomplished throughmeans of incorporating the API functions into a compiler solution. The solution isdesigned to export the information required through an XML-file to generate PLCapplications.The generated PLC-code will be in Structured Text. In order to createa functional PLC-application, the construction of software requirements and testcases are established. The solution is then validated by means of generating a dataloggerto illustrate the usage. The exploratory research revealed both the benefitsand cons of using AI to a compiler solution. The evaluation indicated that the AutomationInterface can reduce engineering effort to produce a compiler solution, butthe learning curve of understanding the underlying components that work with theAPI required a great deal of effort.

    Computer applications are no longer local installations on our computers. Many modern web applications and services rely on an internet connection to a centralized server to access the full functionality of the application. High availability architectures can be used to provide redundancy in case of failure to ensure customers always have access to the server. Due to the complexity of such systems and the need for stability, deployments are often avoided and new features and bug fixes cannot be delivered to the end user quickly. In this project, an automation system is proposed to allow for deployments to a high availability architecture while ensuring high availability. The purposed automation system is then tested in a controlled experiment to see if it can deliver what it promises. During low amounts of traffic, the deployment system showed it could make a deployment with a statistically insignificant change in error rate when compared to normal operations. Similar results were found during medium to high levels of traffic for successful deployments, but if the system had to recover from a failed deployment there was an increase in errors. However, the response time during the experiment showed that the system had a significant effect on the response time of the web application resulting in the availability being compromised in certain situations.

    Rapid growth of data intensive digital services are creating potential risks of violating consumer centric data privacy. Protection of data privacy is becoming one of the key challenges for most of the big data business entities. Due to thank of big data, recommendation and personalization are becoming very popular in digital space. However it is hard to find a well-defined boundary which illustrates privacy threat to consumers' in relation with improving already opted-in communication services. In this paper, we initiated identifying key indicators for consumer configured privacy policy in relation with personalized services taking into consideration that "Privacy is a tool for balancing personalization". We survey user attitudes towards privacy and personalization and discovered key indicators for configuring privacy policy by analyzing survey data about privacy concern and data sharing attitude of the consumers. We found that consumers did not want to stop using social media based communication services due to privacy risks. Moreover, consumers have attitude of sharing their data, provided that appropriate personalization features are in place.

    Abstract [en]

    The use of digital tools such as smartphones, tablets and laptops have shown potential to enhance teaching and learning in a wide variety of contexts. 21st century skills such as creativity, problem-solving and innovation as means for supporting learning and knowledge creation, are considered fundamental proficiencies in today's technology- driven society, and they are therefore considered essential to promote, already from the earliest of school years. Hence, there are a number of challenges related to how to design and implement innovative and varied strategies

    for teaching and learning supported by mobile technologies in educational settings. Moreover, it is also crucial to think about how to actively involve teachers into the processes mentioned above, inspiring and inviting them to implement new methods and technologies into their everyday educational practices.

    The work presented in this thesis embodies a series of co-design and design-based research efforts aiming at exploring the interplay between design, information and communication technologies and learning through mobile digital storytelling, guided by the theoretical frameworks of constructivism, multimodality, new media literacies, mobile seamless learning, and technology enhanced learning. Two main research questions have been identified as formulated below, and have served as

    the basis that guided my efforts:

    What design features are necessary to scaffold mobile seamless learning approaches with the support of mobile digital storytelling?

    Considering the role of mobile digital storytelling for educational settings: which design factors and learning requirements could guide and support similar initiatives?

    Over the years of my doctoral studies, a progression of research interventions involving teachers, pupils, and museum staff have been co-designed, developed, tested and validated. These efforts have resulted in a method, a mobile application, and a web service for mobile digital storytelling in educational contexts, named the mobile digital storytelling (mDS) system.

    The mDS system introduces learning technology approaches aiming to support teacher and pupil digital inclusion, mobile seamless learning and multimodal aspects, and serves as a reflective instrument for both collaborative and individual work. The validation of mDS in different educational settings indicates that it can be independent of subject matter, user age, locality and previous knowledge of technology enhanced learning, and is easy to access and manage for teachers as well as pupils. Hence, it proposes several innovative means on multiple levels for meeting the 21st century skills required for supporting contemporary learning and knowledge creation.

    The present study describes our on-going efforts aiming at refining and validating a Mobile Seamless Learning (MSL) approach supported by mobile Digital Storytelling (mDS). Considering learning factors of locality, formality and time, as well as elements of designs for learning and technical development, we have chosen six dimensions of the MSL framework (Wong and Looi 2011) to support our work. Guided by the principles of co-design (Spikol et al. 2009) and design-based research (Design-Based Research Collective, 2003; Ejersbo et al. 2008), we collaborated with 4 teachers and 54 pupils, devoting an extensive amount of time to design, develop and enact the phases of our proposed mDS workflow supported by mobile and web technologies. Beyond the mobile application developed for mDS, we have developed and integrated web solutions that support the overall learning experience, and tools that allow teachers to orchestrate the activities. The mDS web serve as a platform for continued work over time, such as reflecting, remixing, and reusing the digital content generated during the activities. The web platform provides means for teachers to search, watch, group, and assess the pupils’ mDS outcomes, and therefore serves as the interconnecting glue between all the learning activities involved in the mDS workflow. This study reports on the activities conducted in four classrooms in the spring of 2015, working with the five phases of the mDS approach. The outcomes of our efforts reinforced the importance of an active involvement by teachers to adopt and incorporate innovative technology enhanced learning (TEL) activities and solutions into their everyday educational practices, but most importantly on the need for schools to acquire self-governance on how to make use of their learning technologies.

    This paper presents our current efforts towards finalizing a complete workflow for mobile digital storytelling (mDS) supporting the concept of mobile seamless learning (MSL) in educational settings. Our purpose with the present study was twofold: to initiate the incorporation of complementary software solutions concordant with the mDS workflow proposed in this paper, and to try to consolidate the sustainability of technology enhanced learning efforts like these by encouraging the participating teachers to implement ideas, inspiration and routines from the mDS workflow into their everyday educational practices. However, even though the study outcomes from the pupil activity were rewarding for all stakeholders, exposing intensified motivational boost and dedication among the pupils, we still recognize a challenge in how to motivate and inspire teachers to dare launch and implement future similar efforts on their own.

    This chapter describes our efforts toward finalizing an all-embracing workflow for a mobile seamless learning approach supporting mobile digital storytelling (mDS) for educational purposes. Considering the factors of locality, formality and time as well as the design of the activity and assignments, we have chosen five dimensions of the mobile seamless learning framework to guide our work. In addition to the main mobile application used for mDS, we have also developed and integrated complementary software solutions well in line with the mDS framework, which support the overall learning experience. Here, we present our main three main pilot studies which have provided us with outcomes and insights on technical and methodological requirements, as well as on the importance of an active teacher involvement in order to introduce and implement ideas, inspiration and routines from the mDS workflow into everyday educational practices. Applying the principles of codesign and design-based research (DBR) we have collaborated closely with involved teachers and other stakeholders, devoting an extensive amount of time to introduce the five phases of the mDS workflow and the different technologies. The primary remainder of the challenges for concluding the mDS workflow will be to further refine all software components involved and to fully integrate them into one single social computing platform in which the chosen MSL dimensions and the learning activities in the different phases act as the interconnecting glue. This platform will also serve as a repository and a sharing option for all procedures related to mDS and the mDS activity outcomes.

    Classification of scientific bibliographic data is an important and increasingly more time-consuming task in a “publish or perish” paradigm where the number of scientific publications is steadily growing. Apart from being a resource-intensive endeavor, manual classification has also been shown to be often performed with a quite high degree of inconsistency. Since many bibliographic databases contain a large number of already classified records supervised machine learning for automated classification might be a solution for handling the increasing volumes of published scientific articles. In this study automated classification of bibliographic data, based on two different machine learning methods; Naive Bayes and Support Vector Machine (SVM), were evaluated. The data used in the study were collected from the Swedish research database SwePub and the features used for training the classifiers were based on abstracts and titles in the bibliographic records. The accuracy achieved ranged between a lowest score of 0.54 and a highest score of 0.84. The classifiers based on Support Vector Machine did consistently receive higher scores than the classifiers based on Naive Bayes. Classification performed at the second level in the hierarchical classification system used clearly resulted in lower scores than classification performed at the first level. Using abstracts as the basis for feature extraction yielded overall better results than using titles, the differences were however very small.

    Web Font Optimization for Mobile Internet Users: A performance study of resource prioritization approaches for optimizing custom fonts on the web2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)

    According to the HTTP Archive, 75% of websites are using web fonts. Multiple conditions have to be met before modern web browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Safari decide to download the web fonts needed on a page. As a result, web fonts are late discovered resources that can delay the First Meaningful Paint (FMP). Improving the FMP is relevant for the web industry, particularly for performance-conscious web developers. This paper gives insight into how the resource prioritization approaches HTTP/2 Preload and HTTP/2 Server Push can be used to optimize the delivery of web fonts for first-time visitors. Five font loading strategies that use HTTP/2 Server Push and/or Preload were implemented on replicas of the landing pages from five real-world websites. The font loading strategies were evaluated against each other, and against the non-optimized version of each landing page. All the evaluated font loading strategies in this degree project improved the time it took to deliver the first web font content to the user’s screen, resulting in a faster FMP. It was also discovered that HTTP/2 Server Push, on its own, is not a more performance efficient resource prioritization approach than HTTP/2 Preload when it comes to delivering web font content to the client. Further, HTTP/2 Server Push and HTTP/2 Preload appears to be more efficient when used together, in the context of optimizing the delivery of web font content. However, all conclusions in this paper are based on the results gathered from testing the font loading strategies in an emulated environment and are yet to be confirmed on actual mobile devices with real network conditions.

    This work introduces the available authorization frameworks for the purpose of Single Sign-On functionality within an enterprise, along with the fundamental technicalities. The focus of the work is on SAML 2.0 and OAuth 2.0 frame- works. Following the details related to available protocol flows, supported client profiles and security considerations, the two frameworks are compared in accordance with a set of factors given in a criteria. The report discusses the possibilities provided by a Microsoft Windows based infrastructure, as well as different scenarios and their feasibility in an enterprise environment. The preferred framework, OAuth 2.0, is selected according to the given criteria and the comparative discussions.
