    Abstract [sv]

Fighting men`s violence against woman in the age of evidence and NPM2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Men's violence against women is a widespread global problem and a serious threat to women's health. This symposium will report from a study in Sweden that studies mechanisms that influence the design of interventions contesting domestic violence in two cities.

The symposiums three presentations will answer the following questions:

    1. Given the fact that the organizations face many different views and ideologies; how does this affect the ways the problem of domestic violence is represented?

    2. In what way affects ideas from performance measurement and new public management the interventions?

    3. In what way are the social services organizing towards an evidence-based practice in this field?

Presentation 1 Interpersonal violence-From policy to local practice

Presentation 2 Open Comparisons in social work

Presentation 3 Negotiating in risk assessment practices

    Abstract [en]

This inquiry deals with experimental local social work, which out of the purpose of creating innovation in social work, try to solve problems of integration in deprived urban areas. Focus is on those kinds of experiments that are formulated within an empowerment perspective, and where empowerment is seen as synonymous with innovation and solutions of severe social problems. The inquiry deals with how innovation and empowerment are taking place in the integration of immigrants and refugees. What are the consequences, and what is the relevance to the group in question? How can such efforts bee understood and related to an innovation perspective?

The study is part of a research program about innovation in municipalities and regions. The program was initiated and financed by “Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting”. Two different projects of integration, in Denmark and Sweden, were chosen as the empirical background. Both projects were dealing with integration of women with a background as migrants or refugees and both projects had empowerment as a goal.

The inquiry shows that there has been a change in the understanding of empowerment. Nowadays empowerment is focusing on strengthen the ability of individuals and groups to use their resources and to take part in society as active citizen. These are changes which in crucial ways differ from the meanings of the concept, as it was ascribed in the social work of the seventies. At that time the concept was especially connected to a critique of the welfare state and its institutions. Empowerment was meant to mobilize the resources of marginal groups to create transformation and emancipation. The inquiry concentrates on transformations and the relation between normalisation and emancipation. What are the potentials of transformation in innovation? Are processes of innovation making transformations and renewals or are they expressions of social discourses at a given time? Are processes of innovation contributing to strengthen the prevailing order rather than change it? In another way: To whom are processes of innovation innovative?

Migrant care workers in Italian households: recent trends and future perspectives2017Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Social Care Work Around the World / [ed] Karen Christensen & Doria Pilling, Routledge, 2017, s. 142-155Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on role played by migrant care work within the Italian long-term care (LTC) system. Italy is a country where the informal sector, and in particular the family, has traditionally represented the bulk of care provision, with public policies and interventions tending to perpetuate and take for granted this constellation. The analysis examines the increasingly important pillar of the Italian LTC system represented by care workers who are directly employed by Italian households, usually called in Italian assistenti familiari or – in a partly pejorative informal term – badanti. The impact of demographic trends on the Italian LTC system is exacerbated by a traditional lack in the coverage of formal LTC services, and more recently by the deepest economic recession since the Second World War. Families can take the chance to open up to new care and living solutions and create human capital, or they can isolate and shut down any positive possibility in the caregiving triad.

Title: “Children should not grow up like that. They may turn out the same”: Social workers, working with foster care investigations, reasoning about family and family structures of foster homes. [translated title]

    Supervisor: Annika Staaf

    Assessor: Norma Montesino

There has been a change in family structure which shows that the nuclear family, which is still the main form of family pattern, is becoming less frequent nowadays. Same-sex couple families, single parent families and reshaped families are some of the family forms which are becoming more common in modern society. Some argue that, despite these changes, most people still consider the nuclear family as the norm and the ideal. The aim of this study was to understand how social workers, working with foster care investegations within the Swedish social sevice, reason about family structures in spring 2009. I wanted to understand how these social workers view family, and different forms of family patterns, in the context of foster homes. Does their reasoning reflect the new family structures or the traditional nuclear family? My theoretical approaches of choice were the theory of social constructions, the queer theory term heteronormativity and Hirdmans gender theory about the gender contract. The method I used was qualitative and consisted of five semi-structured interviews carried out with five social workers in three different Swedish communities. The results I came up with illustrated that the interviewed social workers mostly considered the presence of siblings in a family constitution to be a positive factor. All of the interviewed social workers said they believe it is important to have a father- and a mother figure while growing up. The results also showed that, even though the social workers defined the term family as wide and including different kinds of possible family constellations, heteronormative values were thoroughly expressed and the nuclear family was idealized by the social workers regarding foster care and children’s needs.

Key words: Family structure, family ideal, foster care investegation, social service.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explain how the work with unaccompanied children´s individual needs is affected by an increased workload at residential care homes for unaccompanied children. More specifically it´s aim was to critically analyse how the professional approach is affected by an increased workload. The study was based on eight semi-structured interviews with professionals that work at residential care homes for unaccompanied children. The theories that have been the basis for the analysis is Ulla Holms theory of professional approach and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The result of the essay shows that the increased workload affects the professional’s ability to work with a professional approach with the children’s needs. The important need of safe relationships and a safe environment have been affected by an increased number of children placed, double occupancy in some rooms and an increased staff turnover. The staff found it hard to keep a good professional approach in a demanding and challenging environment when the right conditions are experienced as missing.  Simply the time is not enough and major difficulties occur for the personal to handle the lodge and at the same time have time for the children living there. The situation has resulted in a focus on group-oriented care that complicate the accommodation of the children's individual needs.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study is to understand how first-line managers lead their employees in the implementation of social service legislated value-base for elderly people. We wanted to understand what kind of leadership the managers used and how this leadership is formed by their acting space. Method: For this study is a qualitative method used. Trough semi-structured interviews, with 7 first-line managers, the empirical data were collected. Theory: For the analysis of the empirical data was Kurt Lewin’s three classic leadershipstyles used; the autocracy, the democracy and laissez-faire, and the theoretical concept of acting space. Result: The result of the study showed that the most common leader-style is the democracy style among the first-line managers. In the work with the social service legislated value-base for elderly people it is important to be a present leader that supports and include the employees in this work. However there are situations where the leader has to use an autocracy leader-style. The leadership is shaped by the acting space the first-line manager has. It can be affected by the organizational conditions like resources and the possibility of education for both the managers and the employees.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to illuminate social worker’s perception of social class within the Swedish social service system. This study therefor examine if social class contributes to the production and reproduction of the client and what impact social class has on the interaction between client and social workers. The study was conducted with qualitative semi-structured interviews with social workers from three different departments of social service. The theoretical approach is Yeheskel Hasenfeld’s theory about moral practices in welfare organisations, Michael Lipsky and Roine Johansson’s theories about client construction and Pierre Bourdieu’s class theory. The conclusion of this study is that social class affects individual conditions and opportunities in Swedish social service. Social worker’s perceptions of social class have an impact on the construction of clients and will affect what level of service a client receives.

TY HAFAN - THE CHILDREN´S HOSPICE IN WALES: En studie om family support teamets arbete med sörjande föräldrar och deras obotligt sjuka barn2007Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen)Studentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze how teenage girls and boys are judged differently by their socially destructed behavior in the context of social- and legal system in Sweden. My focus has been to illustrate how risk factors are expressed differently depending on gender notion. The study is based on a document analysis of eight legal cases, applied by the social welfare board. I have used a social constructivist perspective to analyze the collected data, since the legal texts are a construction produced by the social- and legal systems. This study theory has been inspired by Judith Butlers theory, which focuses on normative frameworks on gender and sexuality. My conclusion illustrates that the authors who produced the legal texts, from the social- and legal system, seemed to perceive more risk in girls than in boys. The risk factors with girls often tend to problematize their sexuality and vagabonding. On the other hand, the analyze illustrates concrete evidence that the boys risk factors problematized their drug use and criminal behavior.

Kränkande behandling via sociala medier: En kvalitativ studie om skolpersonalens syn på kränkande behandling via sociala medier2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine if and to what extent the personnel at the local school perceive offensive treatment through the social media among the students and what the personnel thinks about the responsibility of the school to prevent this type of abuse. Offensive treatment through the social media has become a common occurrence among youth and affects health in both psychological and physical ways. As offensive treatment through the social media often takes place outside of school in the students spare time the responsibility of their health is unclear. But since it affects their school results the school has a responsibility to act, which is confirmed by legislation. However, the legislation does not mention offensive treatment through the social media and the school has no distinct guidelines to prevent this form of offensive treatment. Therefore many schools use prevention programs designed for traditional bullying and it is based on local conditions in each school. This leads to differences among how school handle offensive treatment through the social media. It is therefore interesting to investigate how the school personnel perceive offensive treatment through the social media as it affects their work against it.This study is based on the results from qualitative semi – structured interviews with school- and leisure personnel from three different secondary schools. The results show that there is a significant difference between how the school personnel understand the occurrence of offensive treatment through the social media among the students in the different schools and how the school personnel handle it. The measures that are updated and implemented in these schools are dependent on the prevailing climate at each school, which affects the understanding of the problem and its existence.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze legal texts under the law with special provisions for the care of children, to create a deeper understanding of, and if so, how social workers in the Swedish social services and courts construct different discourses on culture and violence. Compulsory care of children according to the law mentioned above is one of the biggest intervention the Swedish state has the authority to do against individuals. Swedish courts decide whether the child should be taken into care based on the social services investigation. The empirical data for the study is eight legal texts, where the child was abused by the legal guardian, which have been studied through discourse analysis. Discourse focuses on how people through language construct and reconstruct perceptions of the reality. The focus of the analysis was to find constructions of subject positions, categories and relations. The results of the analysis showed that the selected legal texts constructs stereotypical ideas about “honour culture” and gives culture a great explanatory value to the violence practiced by people assigned the “honour culture”. The “Swedish culture” on the contrary, was made invisible and was given no explanatory value to the violence. Instead the violence was given social and individual explanations. The selected legal documents had a tendency to construct perceptions of “honour culture” and honour related violence in a stereotypical and homogeneous way.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to understand how the family home secretary reasons and thinks and how they express themselves in their actions towards the family home’s biological children. The method used is qualitative semi-structured interviews, involving six family home secretaries from four different municipalities. The results were analyzed with the help of two theories – the theory of grassroots bureaucracy and the sociology of childhood theory. From the collective views of all informants, the biological children’s attitude towards the family home mandate is considered important. However, participation from the biological children is limited. Education and guidance is directed solely towards the family home parents, without any active involvement from the biological children in these efforts. Some of the informants stress that they as professionals must be better at paying attention to the biological children than what prevails today. The collective results show that family home parents are expected to take great responsibility for their biological children as well as their participation and well-being within the family home mandate.

    Abstract [en]

Over the last few decades there has been a significant increase when it comes to mental ill health amongst Swedish schoolchildren. The school counselor has a crucial role both when it comes to detecting and to deal with these social problems. But according to recent studies the school counselors’ profession seems to lack a universal-based defined job description which has led to a decreased autonomy as well as legitimacy-related issues. This made us ask ourselves if the school counselors’ competence is used to its full potential.

The overarching purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how school social workers experience and perceive health-promoting work based on their professional role. The specific aims were to answer the following questions: How do school teachers experience health promotion at school? How does the school counselor perceive their professional role? Our method in order to collect our empirical data was to through semistructured interviews with six school counselors in Sweden. To help increase the understanding of our data we used profession-theory and also role-theory.

The summarized findings are that the school counselors are a part of a group created to support the schoolchildren’s health. This group is heavily affected by the school organization’s resource assets and the school counselors’ perception is that there aren’t enough time nor enough professionals working with school-based health-promotion compared to the amount of students attending the school. We also found that the school counselors have different room, a different degree of autonomy, in order to influence the structure of the health-promoting work at school. Our conclusion is that this difference seems to depend on the principal as well as on the type of employment the school counselor has. The externally employed school counselor experienced much more autonomy compared to the internal employees. Furthermore, the school principal is proven to have a strong impact on the school counselors’ professional role and the school counselors have experienced legitimacy-related issues towards certain teachers due to their undefined job description.

Title - Within the social services approach: A qualitative interview study of the social services attitudes towards young offenders

    Supervisor: Melker Labory

    Assessor: Ulf Drugge

The purpose of this study was to see the social workers attitude towards young offenders and how this can affect the teenagers. The theoretical perspectives have been the theory of street-Level Bureaucracy, social constructivism and Stages of change. The material has been collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews and email-interviews with the social workers. The aim of this study was to examine if the social workers uses their theoretical experiences about their attitudes in their practical work and if their response can raise or reduce the young offenders motivation to change their behaviour. To collect information it was chosen that this study would only concentrate on the social workers opinions. This is to ensure the relevance of the social work practice. The social workers, who were chosen, were limited to those who in one way or another come in contact with the young offenders between the ages of 15-17 years, on a regular basis. The collected data was contrasted with the previous research and was analysed from the above perspectives. The authors of this study were interested to see the professionals’ thoughts and experiences on their theoretical and practical work, which both include the attitudes and their motivational work with the young offenders. The results show that the social workers have a great responsibility in strengthen the young offenders to discover their inner motivation so they can change their criminal behaviour.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine what previous research says about children’s experiences living in a low-income family. Its aim was to found out what children themselves say about their life living in a low-income family and what consequences, practical and emotional, low-income environment has on children. More specifically our aim was to find out how children themselves experienced their situation compared with their peer’s economical situation. We also wanted to see if there were any differences between what younger and older children say about their situation. Furthermore, we wanted to find out what meaning they added to “normality” and how they related to that phenomenon. The study was based on reviews of nine qualitative studies from Sweden, England, North Ireland and USA – all published between 1998 and 2011, focusing on children and their experiences of poverty. Five themes were identified that seemed to be important for children’s experiences: life circumstances, relationships, children as actors, school and future. The analysis was based on perspective of normality, focusing how impoverished life circumstances put children in a category which deviates from majority of society. Main results demonstrate that there are big differences in how younger and older children experience their situation where older children showed more discontent and the younger children seemed more satisfied about their situation. Overall the children appear as actors which have not given up hope to change and impact their situation – there was a major will to fit in and be like other peers. As a positive aspect the study shows that relationships seemed very important for these children where friends seemed to be a good support and the family ties were strong.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how women with drug- and alcohol abuse describes addiction stigma related to female ideals. This study has a social constructivist approach. The empirical data is collected by reading seven autobiographies written by women with drug- and/or alcohol abuse. The result has been analysed through Goffmans social theory. The findings indicate that the abuse and the shame it is resulting in has a negative effect on the women’s sense of self, self-esteem  and therefore on their identity.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis aims to study how rainbows families are being treated by the authorities and the surroundings. It focuses on how homosexual parents are met in society. Although, homosexuals have the legal right to have a family and enter into marriage, the social norms are still far behind and rainbows families are seen as “the others” and abnormal.  Earlier researches have been studding how the authorities still assumes that every family are living in a heterosexual family constellation. By this assumption they exclude families who are not living in a heterosexual family. To find out what kind of experiences the homosexual parents have we have interviewed eight homosexual parents. Which four were females and four were males. The result of this thesis shows that most of the homosexual parents are not experience that they are treated bad or in any other way different then heterosexual parents. It also shows that people in the nearest surroundings to the homosexual family are really glad that the gay couple have a family. At the same time the homosexual parents are saying that there will always be people who think it’s abnormal. But as long as the nearest families and friends find it alright they are not paying too much energy of those who thinks it’s wrong. The majority of gay males explain that the hardest part in building a family is that they are males; it’s harder to be accepted as two fathers. One conclusion is not that homosexuals are being treated different; it’s more a question of gender. Especially when the children are young, a lot of males feels that the always have to state themselves, not as a gay parents but as two males who is having infants.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how SOS Children's Villages as an organization in Swaziland is affected by, and takes into account, the cultural, organizational and societal context in which it acts. Material was gathered through a field study during one month in one of the three SOS Children's Villages in Swaziland. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on the result from 12 semi-structured interviews with village mothers and other representatives from the organization. The other representatives were: social worker, program director, child and youth development coordinator, board member and educational manager. Since this study is both characterized by a specific historical, cultural and organizational context, we decided to connect the postcolonial perspective with an organization theory with focus on the concepts of culture, power and a children’s right perspective. The result from the study showed that SOS Children's village is affected by and takes into account the cultural and societal context in Swaziland in several ways. They do so, mainly by inlvolving the children in cultural values and activites. The result also showed that the village is influenced by the organizational field, because the SOS-Children´s village is in need of creating legitimacy. However, it becomes thus a dilemma how much the social work should be built upon, adapted, or should take into account the cultural, organizational and societal contexts to not maintain colonial worldviews.

    Abstract [en]

The intention of this study was to examine the interaction between authorities. More specifically it had a purpose to look at the ongoing cooperation between social workers and staff of special homes of closed institutional youth care. The sanction system for young offenders’ reform of 1999 where young people between the ages of 15-17 who have committed serious crimes, can be sentenced to secure institutional treatment instead of prison, aims to counteract the harm which can result from a stay in prison. The social welfare board in the young person´s local authority and the national board of institutional care shall cooperate during the youth’s placement at the special home of closed institutional youth care. This study was based on eight qualitative interviews with social workers chosen randomly from all over Sweden and staff members from different special homes of closed institutional youth care. To interpret the material we have been using theory of collaboration and cooperation of Danermark and Kullberg. We have also used earlier studies within the area. The study has resulted that the social welfare board are more satisfied with the corporation than the national board of institutional care are. The study also shows that there has been an improvement. Significant reasons for this result has proved to be; the two different employers with different mission statement who are cooperating, unclear guidelines and the lack of knowledge within in the social services. Today there’s an ongoing cooperation that needs to be developed.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study with a hermeneutic and partially inductive approach. The study’s purpose is to enhance the understanding of young adults experiences of unemployment and the importance of being employed. In this study, eight young adults participate in the project Framtid Kronoberg. The youths are 19-25 years of age. A coach from the project was also involved and gave us his view of the project, its goals and objectives.

Through all the interviewees statements regarding unemployment, it was confirmed that work has a significant impact on the identity of the elaboration and socialization. Knowing the community, to be useful to society and to earn their own money, are some of the important factors that can be accomplished by a employment. Young people experience work and activities as positive and developing. Being unemployed affects how individuals perceive themselves and their living situations. Young people who fall outside of the labor market has found difficulties to reengage themselves into work and society, and thus risking a life of alienation with bad economy and poor living conditions as a result.

A stranger in my homeland: The politics of belonging among young people with Kurdish backgrounds in Sweden2010Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines how young people with Kurdish backgrounds form their identity in Sweden with regards to processes of inclusion and exclusion. It also sheds light on the ways these young people deal with ethnic discrimination and racism. Further, the study outlines the importance of these social processes for the discipline of social work and the ways social workers can work with disadvantaged and marginalized groups and endorse their struggle for social justice and full equal citizenship beyond racist and discriminatory practices. The empirical analysis is built on interviews with 28 young men and women with Kurdish backgrounds in Sweden. Postcolonial theory, belonging and identity formation constitute the central conceptual framework of this study.

The young people referred to different sites in which they experienced ethnic discrimination and stigmatization. These experiences involved the labor market, mass media, housing segregation, legal system and school system. The interviewees also referred to the roles of ‘ordinary’ Swedes in obstructing their participation in the Swedish society through exclusionary discourses relating to Swedish identity. The interviewees’ life situation in Sweden, sense of ethnic discrimination as well as disputes over identity making with other young people with Middle-Eastern background are among the most important reasons for fostering strong Kurdish nationalist sentiments, issues that are related to the ways they can exercise their citizenship rights in Sweden and how they deal with exclusionary practices in their everyday life. The study shows that the interviewees respond to and resist ethnic discrimination in a variety of ways including interpersonal debates and discussions, changing their names to Swedish names, strengthening differences between the self and the other, violence, silence and deliberately ignoring racism. They also challenged and spoke out against the gendered racism that they were subjected to in their daily lives due to the paternalist discourse of ”honor-killing”.

The research participants had been denied an equal place within the boundary of Swedishness partly due to a racist postcolonial discourse that valued whiteness highly. Paradoxically, some interviewees reproduced the same discourse through choosing to use it against black people, Africans, newly-arrived Kurdish immigrants (”imports”), ”Gypsies” and Islam in order to claim a modern Kurdish identity as near to whiteness as possible. This indicates the multiple dimensions of racism. Those who are subjected to racism and ethnic discrimination can be discriminatory and reproduce the racist discourse. Despite unequal power relations, both dominant and minoritized subjects are all marked by the postcolonial condition in structuring subjectivities, belonging and identification.

Constructing Cultural Otherness Within the Swedish Welfare State: The Cases of Social Workers in Sweden2015Ingår i: Qualitative Social Work, ISSN 1473-3250, E-ISSN 1741-3117, Vol. 14, nr 4, s. 554-571Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to analyze how social workers frame the social problems of immigrant clients in Sweden. The study is based on in-depth interviews with 20 social workers in three different Swedish municipalities. While Swedish social work often assumes a discourse of color-blindness and universalism, this study indicates that Swedish social workers not only see cultural differences but also regard these differences as central when they frame, assess, and formulate their interventions. The discourse of culturalization not only produces and reinforces the ideas of cultural hierarchy and Swedish superiority, but it also tends to obstruct non-European immigrants from equal participation in the Swedish society since they are not allowed to enjoy their full citizenship. Consequently, there is a need for social work in Sweden to rethink its culturalist framework and go beyond cultural reductionism and take into consideration other issues such as unemployment, housing conditions, poverty, social isolation, marginalization, and ethnic discrimination.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain and increase knowledge about intimate partner violence, also known as domestic violence. The research questions we aim to answer are how professionals define violence, the causes behind why so many men use violence against their significant other and, furthermore, what kind of support and treatment those men can be offered. To answer these questions, we have made eight semi-structured qualitative interviews with respondents working with treatment for men who has used or still use violence against women in intimate partner relationships. The professionals represent different organizations connected to "Rikskriscentrum" and offer support and treatment for both men and women. The result of the study shows that all respondents define violence similary. Most of them use a quite wide definition showing that violence is so much more than just physical abuse. The support and treatment offered for intimate partner violence is described substantially similary too. Why many men use violence in their intimate partner relationships is the question who turned out to be most complex and hard to answer. We have discussed our main questions using theories about gender and the process of normalization in domestic violence. Our reasoning is also connected to a social context, often referred to as a socio-economic model.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study was to understand and analyze how Swedish social workers define and prevent threats and violence at the workplace. The social workers that we interviewed were to help people who abuse alcohol and drugs. The aim was also to understand which causes the social workers could see how that the threats and violence arose. The study was based on eight individual semi-structured interviews in three different municipalities, but not in a comparative purpose. The empirical data were analyzed with the help of Erving Goffman´s dramaturgical perspective and social constructivism. The main results of the study showed that social workers were not exposed to major violent situations. There was no clear definition of threats and violence, instead the definitions were individually experienced. The result also showed that the social workers had a preventative approach against threats and violence. The causes of unwanted situations were linked to authorities compelling elements and exercise of power.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how school personnel describe and interpret the phenomenon bullying among girls, and also what their interpretations are based upon. More specifically its aim was to find out what characterizes and causes girl-to-girl bullying, according to school welfare officers and teachers. We wanted to find out how school personnel look upon aggression among girls and social expectations on girls behavior. The analysis was based on two kinds of perspectives: one focusing on gender and one focusing on power in relationships. Research shows that girl-to-girl bullying is hard to observe and that this problem has been invisible in earlier studies. We thought that this phenomenon needs to be brought up and that is one of the reasons why we wanted to examine this subject. This study was based on qualitative interviews with school welfare officers and teachers. A main theme in our study is that our respondents describe girl-to-girl bullying as subtle and quiet. We also found that some of our respondents disagreed on this statement. Their opinions were mainly based on their own experience from working in a school environment. As a conclusion we found out that factors such as social maturity and gender roles can be used as explanations on the phenomenon girl-to-girl bullying. We found out that our tools, power and gender theories, could not fully explain why girls bully in a certain way and how school personnel interpret the phenomenon. More knowledge is needed to understand more about girl-to-girl bullying.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on how politicians’ standars were represented in the debate about assisted reproduction of single women and surrogacy in Sweden. And also which arguments the politicians performed on both issues. The study was based on the protocol 2011/12:91 from the parliamentary debate in Sweden. The aim of the study was to examine political standards is identified according to parenting and family in the assisted reproduction and surrogacy debate. The empirical material has been analyzed through social constructivism as a theory and standard critical perspective related to normality. Argument analysis was used as a method to identify pro et contra arguments on the issues. Two theses from the protocol 2011/12:91 was identified and analyzed. The first thesis was "Every child has a right to have both a mother and a father" and the second thesis was, "Every human should have an opportunity to have children". Pro arguments to the first thesis was that a child has a right to know its genetic origin and to be nursed by both its parents as far as possible. They meant that the traditional family constellation with a mother and a father is a good family to raise a child within. Contra arguments in this issue also meant that the child has a right to know its genetic origin, and therefore should get this right in Sweden to reduce the risk that mothers get infertility treatment abroad with a donor that is anonymous. Additional contra arguments in this thesis was that the most important thing for a child is to grow up in a family with love and care, regardless of family constellation. Pro arguments to the last thesis, "Every human should have an opportunity to have children" was that it is a biological instinct to reproduce and politicians should therefore not stand in the way by prohibiting single women to get assisted reproduction. Contra argument to this thesis was that parenting is an impossible question to fairness. They meant that if you do not have the physical ability to have children, society should not help you with this matter. They also meant that if we legislate surrogacy in Sweden it is a big risk that women become a commodity in the matter. And this risk outweigh parents’ desire to have children.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines how perceptions of competence affect the care of older persons, and the values and vocational conceptions of care work and care recipients that are tied to the perceptions of what skills that are needed and why. Competence is defined by three parts with relevance for the content of care work: what knowledge the care workers should have, what tasks they should perform and how they should respond to care recipients. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how the care managers' and care workers' perceptions of competence form the direction of the care work and how that direction relates to the care recipients’ perceptions of and expectations on the care work.

The care work is characterised by what is analysed as an activation of the recipients - that the recipients themselves should perform as much of the care work as possible. The activation aims at managing the decay of the aging body and is motivated by a vocational conception of the care recipients as different from others, with designations as grateful and passive. This conception is analysed as generation character based on an idea among the care managers and care workers that the society in which the recipients grew up gave them certain cognitive prerequisites that have to be managed in the practical care work.

The care recipients in the study have opposing conceptions and perceptions of care work compared with the care managers and care workers. The recipients’ central objective with the care work is to prevent what has been interpreted as the disrepair of the home. The care recipients’ position in the organisation raises the problem of loyalty towards the care workers and in some sense the care managers. Their loyalty reduces their ability to complain and to influence their situation to the better.
