Supervision as Pedagogy and Support in the Swedish Eldercare: A Developmental Project2006Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work, ISSN 0163-4372, E-ISSN 1540-4048, Vol. 47, nr 3-4, s. 83-102Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The number of elderly people is gradually increasing, and with it the number of persons receiving some kind of care in their everyday lives. However, researchers and the mass media recurrently report great difficulties for many caregivers in their work situations. This article considers process-oriented supervision as a pedagogic method for training and support of nurse aids and managers in Swedish eldercare. With reference to a developmental project, the author discusses the clash between the supervisor's process-oriented manner and the staffs' problem-oriented attitudes. This shows that supervision in this form may not necessarily be an effective way of reforming care. Instead the caregivers point out organisational changes and better leadership as more adequate methods.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore and gain understanding of the situation between managers in different forms of human service organizations. I chose to use a qualitative method and conducted semi-structured interviews with five professional middle managers in the public sector. To accomplish my purpose, I worked on the basis of several questions. The questions dealt with the role of middle management and what it involves, how it is perceived and what the middle managers think of the specific requirements for them and their leadership in organizations that provide services relating to people.  As a result of the analysis I have used the theory of social roles that describes the meaning of the different roles and role conflicts that arise in connection with various and conflicting expectations. The review of the results shows that middle managers in human service organizations experience to have to deal with a complex leadership role. Some managers talk about a role, others on several roles at the same time or in different situations. The most prominent "features" of the roles is the balance and tension between authority and citizen services and between their own authority and political control. The problems described, most often linked to that they are in an intermediate position to demands and expectations from both up and down the hierarchy and from other outside actors. The role describes not only as problematic but also fraught with conflict. Role Conflicts often arise when middle managers occupy an intermediate position and are presumed to manage conflicting expectations. The specific requirements differ between managers of the public sector comparing to the private sector in some aspects, such as the manager's authority is different and that politicians play an important role in the decision. The organization is dominated by regulation and does not give managers an enormous amount of space to manage and develop the organization to suit your ideas. All middle managers feel also that the manager's role in politically controlled organizations set specifications for different qualifications than for managers in general.

International cooperation as policy transfer: the case of a violence prevention project between Swedish and Ukrainian NGOs.2011Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 80 poäng / 120 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

International cooperation became a wide-spread way of exchanging experience and ideas between organizations of the non-profit sector all over the world. The exchange of new ideas and experience on the international level can very often contain cases of policy transfer, which beyond all doubts can influence the participants of international cooperation.

    Aim

The aim of the presented Master's thesis consists of the investigation and analysis of international project on violence prevention between Swedish and Ukrainian NGOs, assessing and verifying the representation in the project the particular case of policy transfer.

    Method

In order to collect the empirical data, mixed qualitative methods were used in this thesis, which included the concept of triangulation used for the data collection.

    Result

The conduction of the presented qualitative research gave an opportunity to uncover and examine the different roles played by Ukrainian and Swedish NGOs in the welfare systems of their respective countries. It also became possible to observe an occurrence of a particular form of cooperation between the two NGOs in the international cooperation project, which can be related to a particular type of policy transfer.

    Conclusions

Due to the fact that the project analysed in this study is still ongoing, it is still too early to derive any final conclusion about its achievements and formulate an evaluation concerning the nature of the policy transfer process. So far the author of the presented thesis can see that the project on its current stage has an occurrence of lesson-drawing policy transfer.

Social Integration and New Realities in the Swedish Welfare Society2010Ingår i: Social Work & Society, ISSN 1613-8953, E-ISSN 1613-8953, Vol. 8, nr 1, s. 94-103Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that there is a discrepancy between the perception of social realities held by professionals of welfare (school teachers and social workers) in Sweden and the social realities of migrants, especially migrants depending on social assistance. The views held by professionals are rooted in an old model of social integration within the framework of the nation-state. This perception contrasts with the life conditions, expressed here in the consumption practices of migrant families who, in their daily life, are linked to both local and transnational places. Consumption is an “old question” that has been linked both to poverty and immigration. The article is focusing not on consumption as such; instead on consumption as an illustration of the mismatch existing between the professionals’ view and the migrants’ description of their own consumption. The analysis is based on a qualitative study including interviews with migrant families and welfare officers in a neighbourhood in Malmoe, a city in the South of Sweden with some 300,000 inhabitants, of which 29 % are born outside Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

The study seeks to investigate and understand how individuals create their identity from the perspective of two countries and cultures, and how these affect their current lives today. The focus of the study is aimed at young adults who have mostly or entirely grown up in Sweden to parents that have migrated. The material is based on seven qualitative, semi-structured interviews. The result is then divided into three themes; ethnic and cultural belonging, life impact, and the preservation and passing on of culture. The derivation of the first theme is that there are mixed views regarding the cultural association of the persons interviewed. Some present a clear vision of their cultural belonging and identities as Swedes, while others give a more ambiguous depiction as they find themselves in between two cultures and are experiencing a certain ambivalence regarding their cultural belonging. The second theme describes the pros and cons of living alongside two cultures as well as the importance of language. One of the main advantages that emerge is that the respondents perceive themselves as having a broader perspective and a deeper understanding of other cultures and ethnicities. Negative aspects that individuals have experienced are discrimination and parental influence. This theme also addresses the importance of language regarding the cultural belonging of the individual. The respondents agree that the language is of importance for the feeling of belonging, and that it is natural to feel more connected to those who speak the same language. The third and last theme describes how the individuals retain their original culture in their everyday lives, and it furthermore deals with ideas regarding the future as well as the passing on of culture.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The growing marginalisation from the labour market has in most European countries been answered by activation policies. However, societal inclusion can take many other forms than labour market inclusion and also the employment effects of most activation policies are often meagre. The article therefore points to other and more radical policies than activation.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to understand limitations and possibilities to the discretion of managers in order to fulfill wishes of users. The study is based on six interviews, three with managers and three with staff in common homes for mentally disabled people. The study took place in a municipality in Sweden in the spring of 2010. We used an interview guide with specific themes and questions. The theoretical framework was based on organizational theories as well as theories about management and discretion. The result suggests that there are limitations to a certain degree such as the quantity of staff and economy. There are some possibilities to enable discretion including the use of the hierarchy within the organization. Another possibility is to make use of the knowledge of the staff about the demands and wishes of users. The conclusion of the study is that there are both limitations and possibilities that have an effect on the discretion of managers in a complex organization. These limitations and possibilities affect each other and the meaning of them depend on the unique situation.

    Abstract [en]

The focus of this thesis is on social workers’ knowledge in assessing and making decisions in child welfare cases. The primary aim is to identify what skills or knowledge social workers find most useful within child welfare agencies in Swedish municipalities. Six different types of knowledge, social policy and the approach of child welfare cases are perspectives considered in the analysis. The interviews with social workers were held in three agencies in southern Sweden, in 2014. Main results: social workers’ think it is very important to have different kinds of knowledge and skills in order to perform such professional work as possible. They value peer support where they can exchange experiences and knowledge with each other. The importance to specialize after the bachelor’s degree in social work was also revealed in the results, due to the social work supplementary course only represented undergraduate studies. The approach of child welfare cases it was found that there are many different ways to manage them, but the main thing is to manage the cases with great respect and always strive to apply volunteer efforts where it’s possible. Another point is the political importance which we not counted on.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Different forms of organization in the field of social work, creates different conditions of the individual social workers occupation. This affects not only the people who carry out this work, but also the clients who come in contact with social services.

This survey was based on six interviews executed during spring in the year 2010. The respondents were social workers within economic aid and their nearest executive manager at two municipalities in Kalmar County. The overall aim for this survey was to examine how these social workers were influenced by various ways to organize the municipal work activity. This through following questions:

    • How was respective social service in the municipalities organized?
    • How were the social worker effected in their daily work by the organization?
    • Where there any specific up- or downsides in the way that economic aid was organized in the aspect of the social workers daily work?

The result of this survey was synonymous with a lot of the previously executed research in the area in the sense that the larger municipalities were more specialized in its organization than the smaller. Interesting though was that the larger municipality was reorganized and had taken a turn towards a more integrated organization. The underlying reasons for the changes in the organization structure were recourses, control, interchangeability and effectiveness.

The survey also indicated that cooperation with external operators as well as other authorities, healthcare and private institutions had a large impact on the social workers everyday existence. Even the vicinity to colleagues within the wider aspect of social services was significant.

    Title:                                   The last way out

-A qualitative study of psychiatric staff and service users attitude to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

    Author:                              Hanna Nilsson

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) of professionals and service users within a user organization – Riksförbundet för social och mental hälsa. (RSMH)

Questions: Does the psychiatric staff believe that there are preconceptions about electroconvulsive therapy? What motivates service user’s choice of electroconvulsive therapy? Do the psychiatric staff and the service users think that the positive effects of ECT can outweigh the possible negative side effects?

Method: Qualitative study. The study is based on interviews with psychiatric staff

that works with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and with services users who have received electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Results: The result showed that the psychiatric staff feels that preconceived ideas occur about the treatment of ECT, and that it is affecting their approach to work.

Service users motivate their choice by how bad they felt under the depression, and that ECT was their only choice left, that´s why psychiatric staff suggested the treatment.

The positive effects of ECT outweighed the possible negative side effects because life is something you value higher than any memory loss and when there is currently no treatment having a similar efficiency.

    Abstract [sv]

Historically, the horse has in many ways been important to human beings. Today, Equine Assisted Therapy is a form of treatment in which the horse is used as a tool from the treatment of the client. Supported Equine therapy has a therapeutic purpose and may vary depending on the patient's needs and the professionals work competence. Various studies show that animals have a positive impact on people. The aim of our study was to explore how Equine Assisted Therapy is used within the practical fields of social work in Sweden. We wanted to  illustrate how professionals in different social work settings utilize this form of treatment. Based on our purpose we have chosen to use a qualitative approach in which we interviewed five professionals who work with Equine Assisted Therapy as treatment method in various activities. In our results, we present the strengths and weaknesses according to the professionals; which approach they consider relevant and how a treatment session might look like.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to within a Swedish context and from five persons of foreign descent stories study how they have been affected by interpreting for their parents during their childhood and how this has affected the relationships within the family. Studies conducted in an American context have shown that children interpreting for their parents in everyday situations are prone to undertake roles similar of a family leader. Previous studies also show an increased danger of depression among children who interpreted for their parents. The study was conducted by the use of semi-structured interviews with five male respondents with a varying ethnic background. Using Antonovsky´s theoretical formulation ”sense of coherence” we were able to determine that although our respondents during their childhood were subjected to a large amount of stressful elements they also maintained a high sense of well-being. With the help of Erving Goffman´s roll theory we have concluded that although traditional family roles seems to remain intact there is an element within the interpreting process in these families were a shift in family roles can occur and children will identify themselves as the family leader. In conclusion we have found that our respondents have experienced that interpreting for parents has been stressful but through strong family bonds and a high sense of meaningfulness in helping their parents our respondents have maintained a high sense of well-being. Usually the respondents would not take a leading role in the family due to a high sense of respect of their parents and due to the fact that their parents would not let them make any actual decisions regarding family matters.

    Abstract [en]

This study examined parenting in relation to ADHD. The key point of the study was to let parents who experience an ADHD diagnosis share their view on parenting. The research required a comprehensive literature search, partly to examine earlier research in the particular field but also to gather information on parenting. One focus group interview and three semi structured interviews were used to gather relevant information. Informants were recruited from a project for individuals with neuropsychiatric disabilities. Aspects that were not taken in consideration in this study were gender differences in the view on parenting. Neither was the aim of the study to examine the children’s point of view. The study revealed that the informants’ view of parenting of today is all about status and reaching results. From their own experience of parenting, focus was on confirming their children and respect them as individuals. They considered themselves different than other parents, in areas as taking part of their children’s life and not to fit in according to clothing or appearance. Partly, they also felt that they did not get any understanding for their differences from the academic part of society.

    Abstract [en]

Kalmar Municipality has in 2008-2010 made an effort to educate managers on gender, with the goal of mainstreaming gender into public activities so that all citizens should feel safe in that treatment and services are designed and resources are distributed equally to both sexes living conditions and needs. The overall aim of this study was to examine whether the training effort has paid off, and how gender mainstreaming has been implemented in the different activities. We have used a qualitative approach, which we examined through interviews managers' approach to gender equality.

Gender was generally described as an important issue of all respondents, and all were working to mainstream gender into their activities and workplaces. The results show that the operational and management needed clearer directives and strategies in their efforts to promote gender equality. Education was necessary because personal definition of gender may differ from the control contents of the documents. We found that many respondents saw the barrier of time, but also difficulties in changing attitudes and preferences of employees. As a result, we realized that the problem was bigger than that, when society is ruled by norms and values. After analysis of empirical data, we concluded that gender mainstreaming is a difficult subject, and it demands hard work, efforts and resources.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The study deals with the beliefs that relatives of alcohol and drug dependent persons, and representatives from social services have to the various forms of support available for the relatives. Those who participate in the study points out that there are many people who have a need for support as a relative of an alcohol or drug addicted individual, but that there are circumstances that make them choose not to seek assistance. The study shows that the relatives can experience a reluctance to seek support from social services because of how the organization looks like. The study is qualitative, where the collection of the empiric material has consisted in six semi-structured interviews. Three of them have been with relatives of alcohol-or drug-dependent persons and three have been with social workers in various professions, whose work consists of helping both the relatives of people with alcohol and drug dependence as well as people who are dependent. The empirical material has been analyzed according to the theories of Stigma and Us and them, both of which occur in the field of symbolic interactionism.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to enlighten social workers experiences of social networks direct influence in Swedish social services, and in which ways those influences are manifested. Some of the issues that are being explored in this study are: The separation of the private sphere and professional duties; boundaries and dual relationships that occurs inside social networks; the use of social networks as a control-instrument in authority exercise towards clients; and social networks arising impact on social work. The empirical material was collected with nine qualitative interviews with social workers stationed at different social service departments in a Swedish municipality. Also one qualitative e-survey was sent out to, and answered by four social workers with a managerial position in the same municipality.

The results reveal that several informants have experienced different problematic situations involving clients within the social networks. This study shows that the informants are very restrictive with what information (text and pictures) they publish on their facebook-profiles, because of their position of authority and the awareness of the possibility of always being watched. Several informants reveal a strong attitude against the use of social networks in social work and argue that information about clients fetched at social networks cannot be used. Yet some social workers use social networks at work to search information about clients and verify suspicions, for example in decision-making of governmental economical support. The power that the social workers hold against their clients is being exterritorialised inside the social networks and makes further way for an expanding control-society.

Comparing two established professional groups with two “pre-professions”: Paper to be presented at the 6th Interim Meeting of the European Sociological Association, Research Network 19 'Sociology of Professions'  Paris, 22-24 April 2010 Professions and professionalism in times of global economic crisis: - Changes and continuities2010Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we will present data from a case study, including four occupations, which represent different levels of professionalism, in terms of their professional autonomy, their scientific-cognitive bases, and their degree of subordination to the logics of management and bureaucracy within the organisations where they perform their tasks. The occupations chosen are social workers, human resource management personnel (HRM), policemen and sport managers (CSM). Two of these are exclusively employed in the public sector (policemen and social workers) and two are employed mainly in the non-public sectors (HRM and CSM). Two groups are trained in well-established professional programs in the Swedish university system (social work and HRM) while the training of the other two (police and CSM) are new to the University system.

The aim of the study focuses on the dilemmas of professionalism linked to the processes of making different occupational groups more academic. We will discuss key aspects of these occupations within a framework of the structure of the Swedish Professional Landscape. We focus on the similarities and differences among them, shaped by their different levels of acquired professionalism, their control over occupational niches, their perceived identity as an occupation/profession and the character of the scientific-cognitive basis for each group.

The case study consists of the four occupations described above and is based on (small) surveys of students.  They participated in the study as a) students in the beginning of their studies, and as b) working in their different occupations after taken their degrees. As a complement to the surveys a number of in – depth interviews has been conducted focusing the experiences of being and becoming a professional.

    Abstract [en]

Titel: Fostran som pedagogiskt projekt. Bilden av ”problembarnet” i statens offentliga utredningar. (The bringing up of pupils as an educational project. The image of ”the problem child” in governmental committees).

This study focuses on the image of the problem child as it appears in two texts (from the 1940s and 1970s) of governmental committees on Public Health (SOU) and the new school law (Ds 2009:25, will be implemented in July 2011). By image is meant that the image of the problem child is constructed for specific purposes rather than being “found” in an objective reality.

The aim is to describe, analyse and compare discourses on “the problem child” as they appear in the texts. The method used is an application of discourse analysis based on a social constructionist approach and the work of Michel Foucault. Among the Foucauldian concepts used are discourse, governmentality, power and subjectification. In the final chapter possibilities and limitations of Foucauldian analysis are discussed. The discourses that influences the image of the problem child, in the different texts, have three major continuities operating, the talk of a school which aim is to not separate the pupils, the use of the term behavioural disorders and finally the pedagogical methods that individualises, differentiates, compares, places in hierarchy as well as shuts out pupils from the classroom. The emphasize of the teachers role to give knowledge to the pupils rather than bringing them up separates Ds 2009:25 from the two SOU-texts where the emphasize is placed on the bringing up of the pupils. Potential effects concerning the problem child because of this change in the pedagogical discourse are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze homelessness in a medium-sized municipality from an organizational perspective. Some of the central questions in this study are: How is the cause of homelessness explained? How do different actors in the community address, prevent and combat homelessness? Who is responsible for the homelessness?

This study is based on four semi-structured interviews with organizations that work with homelessness. The analysis is based on problem definition theory.

The result of this study shows that homelessness is a problem in this medium-sized municipality even if it is not a big one and that it is often closely combined with substance abuse. The responsibility for the homeless is on the homeless themselves and the social service because that causes is, according to this study, individual based.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to understand and describe school staff´s view on the legal obligation to report child maltreatment. With this approach I will get a better understanding how child maltreatment can be caught up in the Swedish community. Previous research shows that school is one of the authorities who report most children to social services. Previous research indicates that cooperation between school and social services reduces the time of the investigations, and gives a better understanding of what is to be reported. The result shows that a functional cooperation between school staff´s as well as between school and social services is important for children to be caught up in the community. The result also shows that the school tends to do investigations themselves. This is not what the law says. It can result that a report to social services will late or absent. This study is written by a social constructivism approach and with Bronfenbrenners theory, the ecology of human development.

To get my result, we interviewed eight social workers from four different organizations. The Interview participants were people working with adolescents on their spare time, and in the school environment. There were also participants representing social services and the police. The theory that we have chosen to apply to our thesis is systems theory. The results shows that professionals in Oskarshamn see that high school youth alcohol consumption generates large negative effects on the individual. One of the most complained of the impact of young girls drinking is so serious implications, as different forms of sexual exploitation. The result also shows that the preventive work is the focus of efforts to combat youth alcohol use.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study that includes participants that are in connection with a non-civic organization in Sweden. The study aims to capture the participants’ subjective experiences regarding human service organizations. The starting point is to catch both their positive and negative experiences, and then try to concretize what directed their perception in both ways. Is there any specific organization that is represented in positive and the negative column? Is it possible to explain the experience by looking at the organization and the organizational goals? Is it possible to see variables that might explain the perception?

The study has a narrative focus that seeks the answers in the organisational context rather than in the stories themselves. The theoretical approach is Hasenfelds (1983) classification of human service organizations, and the “legal authority” that is one component in Weber’s (1983) bureaucracy.

The result shows that it was one specific organization that dominated the negative experiences. Another aspect that seems to be important is that you meet the right person within these organizations.

Alla pusselbitar behövs: En fallstudie om interprofessionellt teamarbete i äldreomsorgen2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study regards the Swedish documentation system, BBiC, which is translated from the English version LACS. BBiC is created to make sure that the children’s needs are put in centre of attention in child protection investigations. The BBiC-system becomes problematic regarding unaccompanied refugee children because of the parent-perspective which is a keystone in the system. Therefor BBiC creates discretion for the social worker which is not BBiC: s original intension. The study’s aim was to understand how BBiC: s creates discretion for the social worker that works with unaccompanied refugee children.

In the results of the study we show that the social workers discretion expands when using BBiC in the work with unaccompanied refugee children. Because of the lack of guidelines from Socialstyrelsen, BBiC is used differently in different municipalities. The social workers sees BBiC in different ways, some see BBiC as a complete system and has adapted BBiC well to the work with unaccompanied refugee children and therefore the discretion increases. Some has only adapted BBiC as a way of thinking and still has a large discretion.

We use Lipskys theory about street-level bureaucracy and discretion. We selected the theory and its concept because it is relevant to analyze how BBiC has created discretion for the social workers that work with unaccompanied refugee children. With a large discretion there is also a risk of injustice safety for the unaccompanied refugee child. Therefor the legitimacy of municipality can be questioned. We preformed semi-structured interviews in eight municipalities in southern Sweden and had twelve interviewees. We have also done literary studies regarding Socialstyrelsens reports about BBiC and the research that concerning the implementation of BBiC.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of how nursing home staff at dementia care facilities interpret, treat and manages sexual behavior of patients. Four group interviews were made with a total of thirteen participants from three different dementia care facilities. The collected material was processed and thematized in pursuance of the research questions of the study. The results were analysed using three concepts from queer theory; heteronormativity, the heterosexual matrix and power, as well as an article about how nursing home staff constructs actions of patients. The results showed that staff member’s assessments about the patient’s sexual behaviours depended on their posture towards the norm of what is considered to be acceptable. They would allow the sexual behaviour in order to neither restrict nor permit, as long as the staff felt that nobody was liable to harm. The sexual behaviour was related to the cognitive disorder and not to sexuality on the occasions when the nursing home staff considered it to be inappropriate. The results also showed that as a way of coping, the staff would utilize a defusing language to describe the patient’s sexual behaviour.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine former criminals’ experiences of help and support of importance to leave a criminal life style. The study consists of six interviews with former criminals and earlier studies on the subject. These studies show that relapse in crime are most common among those who are socially excluded from society. They also show that important factors to end a life in criminality are for example a supportive social network. During the analysis, we applied the social support theory on our findings. In this study, social support includes practical support, emotional support and network support. These different kinds of support were of relevance for our data sets. The results of this study show that what can be considered as supportive can differ from person to person. It also shows that there is a big variety of supportive factors when leaving a criminal background. They can be for example; to feel needed and appreciated, to get support to manage an everyday life as well as to have a job and an apartment. To be around people with similar experiences of leaving a criminal life style also seems to have a supportive effect on the human being. A supportive social network appears to be the most prominent factor. If you do not have a supporting network it can also be difficult to obtain the support from the practical and emotional support. This because it often seems to be the people in the supportive social network who provides the person with the different kinds of support.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Title: Building Trust: The contradiction between security and democracy in post apartheid South Africa

    Author: Magnus Persson

    Supervisor: Svante Lundberg

This paper aims to investigate the contradiction between security and democracy in post-apartheid South African policing, and was executed on the field together with the South African Police Service (SAPS). The theoretical point of departure is that trust between people, in relation to the institutions of society, is fundamental to democratic development. This in combination with previous research on police reform, police academy socialization, community policing and militarization has lead to the conclusion that a remilitarization process is under way and that a militaristic approach to policing is likely to be counterproductive in terms of achieving democratic development. The study has been executed on a South African police academy as well as at two different police stations with the combined methods of participatory observation and interviews.

"Öppna rambeslut inom SoL": En kvalitativ studie om hur flexibilitet, information ochdelaktighet upplevs i hemtjänsten utifrån ett brukarperspektiv2010Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

People who cannot manage their daily life have the right to be granted assistance, according

to SoL §4. The purpose of this study was to investigate how older people, who have been

granted assistance with an open framework, feel that they are involved and able to

influence the decisions that are being made. The advantages with a framework decision are

that older people receive a greater influence and involvement, which provides greater

security and a more flexible way of working. To fulfil the purpose, a qualitative interview

with six care holders was conducted. The theoretical framework refers to Habermas’s

Communications theory and Antonovsky’s theory of KASAM. The results o

suggest that older people have difficulties in accepting their needs and try to fend for

themselves for as long as possible. Furthermore, the study shows that good communication

between the care holders and the organisation is vital, as the elderly do not know who to

turn to when wanting to appeal or apply for more help. Moreover, our informants feel that

they are involved in their care as they are able to interact with their home care staff and able

to make decisions regarding what to wear for example. The informants also inform us that

they do not change their relief efforts very often and that it is their relatives who are

responsible for bringing forward complaints, when needed. However, it is mostly the care

holders themselves that decide when or if their needs are changed, but for some of our

informants this responsibility lies on their relatives.
