Omsorgspersonalens tankar och arbetssätt kring sexualitet: En kvalitativ studie på grupp- och serviceboenden för personer med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to acquire a greater understanding and knowledge about how care staff at houses with special services for people with intellectual disabilities think and work (handle situations) regarding sexuality. To achieve our goal we carried out nine semi structured interviews using an interview guide. These interviews took place in two different communities in southern Sweden. The theoretical perspectives that were used to analyze the result were Sense of Coherence, Scope of action and Normalization. The result showed that the staff considered sexuality a part of their work and a natural subject to talk about. However they found some subjects harder to discuss, for example sexual abuse. The only time the subject was discussed was when the residents approached the staff themselves. The staff believed that treating the residents with respect and preserving their integrity was very important. Another consideration was that the residents should be able to decide as many things as possible in their life. The staff also wanted to explain sexuality as a meaningful part of life. There were differences in how much support the staff received from their employer. An essential support for the staff was their colleagues. Guidance meetings and other professionals, for example nurses were also supportive. There were differences in how much education the staff received regarding sexuality. They concluded that their actions were based on their own perspective. They did not feel the need to further educate themselves regarding sexuality but thought that it would be interesting and useful.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain an increased understanding of how social worker’s in Sweden experience, manage and prevent secondary traumatization at work. It was a phenomenological and qualitative study were the results was collected through semi-structured interviews with social worker’s. The result has been interpreted from the coping theories by Lazarus and Folkman. The result shows that the majority of the social worker’s that we interviewed experience secondary traumatization and use different coping stratigies to handle said trauma. The main problemfocused coping strategies constitues coaching sessions and also simply being prepared. The more often used emotional strategies includes, among others, social support, self-care, reflection and avoidance. Social worker’s use different strategies during similar situations which is mainly based on their own personality, experiances and knowledge. A sense of purpose, competence building, and a balance between work- and private life are largely perceived to be the most important preventative factors, where both the organization and the individual need to take their respective responsibility.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine women shelters conditions as an organization and how these conditions affect their work with children who have experienced family violence and live in their shelters. In order to achieve a more profound and comprehensive view of the women shelters and their work with these children we selected to execute a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews with collaborators from nine different shelters in Sweden. We found that the women shelter as a non-governmental organization was bicameral and complex where their work with children distinguishes on several areas. We discovered that the women shelters were an organization, affected and formed by its environment. From our empiricism we could distinguish differences on a municipality level where collaborations with schools and social services occur in a resource guided hierarchy which influences the women shelters work with children. The women shelters work also showed to have a focus on the mother, even when they worked with the children. We also found that the shelters work varied in ways of including ideological foundations of moral to its work and therefore where directed and adapting their work with children from different approaches to its working procedures. As a conclusion, women shelters work with children can appear as a lottery of support and help due to its variations in what help the children are offered on their shelters.

Socialsekreterares attityder till homosexuella par som familjehemsföräldrar: En enkätundersökning2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to closer understand the experience of loss and sorrow in conjunction with serious physical illness. I have used a phenomenological approach and therefore used the questions: what have the individuals experienced? How have they experience it? And what meaning did they ascribe to the experience? To answer this questions I have examined five different biographies, based on the biographers’ experience of living with a serious physical illness. I have from these biographies deciphered different themes of loss and sorrow: The physical body, identity, loss of everyday life, to live in a social context, loss of control and the future. I have analysed the result with The Dual Process Model (Stroebe & Schut 1999), where the main idea is that people who experience sorrow and grief, are in a need to oscillate, between confronting and avoidance of different emotions and stressors triggered by the loss. I confirm this in my result, where I have found that the individuals experience loss and sorrow in the themes above, but that they express it and experience it in different ways at different times, and therefore are in a need to oscillate between different emotions and stressors triggered by the loss they experience. My conclusion is that loss and sorrow is a complex and fluctuating phenomenon. Nevertheless, it affects a person’s whole existence.

Samverkan vid SIP-möten: En studie om professionellas upplevelser av faktorer som möjliggör samt försvårar interfunktionell samverkan. 2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since 2010 SIP (coordinated individual plans) meetings are compulsory by law to help those individuals who are in need of support from both municipality and county council. The aim of this study was to understand the professionals’ experiences of the collaboration process at SIP meetings and the factors that enable or make inter-functional cooperation more difficult. This was done by doing nine qualitative interviews from professionals within social work; care managers, social workers and counselors. The results show that professionals have expectations on one another that are not in line with what they can do in reality. It also shows the importance of good relations between the professionals for smooth functioning of collaboration. Hence, the results indicate the importance of knowledge about each other’s areas of responsibility and of laws to overcome these barriers. The results are analyzed with the theory of social representations and the theory of model power (Stein Bråten 1982).

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was, through qualitative interviews with school counsellors in Swedish primary schools, to study what the counsellors are experiencing condition their ability to work proactively according to the Swedish Education Act provisions on student health. During the study, six interviews with school counsellors who worked in the same suburbs, was conducted. The theoretical approach that was used is Michael Lipsky's theory of street-level bureaucrats and the term discretion. The overall outcome of the study was that the interviewed school counsellors felt that they did not have good opportunities to work preventively as the Education Act requires. The main reason for this was the school counsellor’s heavy workload. The results of the study were divided into three categories, which in turn were followed by several themes to highlight the conditions governing school counsellor’s opportunity to work preventatively.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the depiction of juvenile delinquents who were charged with battery or assault in swedish court cases and analyse how the delinquents are constructed in swedish court cases. Moreover we study how concepts of ethnicity and gender individually and together affect the depiction of juvenile delinquents in swedish court cases. Through a document study of nine swedish court cases, the use of intersectional theory and a content analysis of the depictions in those cases, we found that there are depictions based on stereotypes of ethnicity and gender in the swedish court cases. While reading the court cases we were able to find different categories of depictions based on skin color, background, gender roles and violence. Furthermore the we have found that social services depict the juvenile delinquents in different ways, sometimes focusing on the delinquents alcohol- and drug habits and other times on their diagnosis or state of mind. In conclusion we argue that these depictions based on stereotypical concepts of ethnicity and gender in combination with social services’ unequal depiction contribute to a construction of some juvenile delinquents as more deviant than others. We argue that this construction contribute to an increased risk of discrimination for some juvenile delinquents in the swedish courts.

    Abstract [en]

In this study we have examined the image of Sweden and its perceptions of reality in relation to newly arrived immigrants. In order to do so, we used a book named “Om Sverige” and information from the projects “Va Med!” and “Va Med-UNG!”. The material is used in the societal orientation for newly arrived immigrants in order to help them establish themselves in Swedish society. With the help of intersectionality, categorisation and stereotyping we have performed a discursive analysis studying a selected few topics: children, gender, ethnicity, and traditions and norms. Questions that were to be answered in this essay were what image and realities the books want to mediate, if there are any risks of categorisation and stereotyping in the books, and how the book can be understood through an intersectional point of view.

The results of our study were that, although it described the injustices still present in Swedish society, the material mainly mediated an image and reality of Sweden as equal and progressive in many areas. In our final discussion, we suggest further research concerning the immigrants’ perceptions of descriptions in the material used in the societal orientation.

En normkritisk granskning av UMO - din ungdomsmottagning på nätet.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper was aimed to investigate how a sexual education website, UMO.se, with an explicit norm-critical approach to their work achieved its goal to be norm-critical and inclusive in terms of gender, gender identity and sexual orientation. The investigation was focused on a section of the website, "Ask UMO" where the website visitors could submit questions, which were answered by a midwife, a nurse, a counselor, a psychologist, a nutritionist or a doctor. The questions focused on examining how well the "Ask UMO" lived up to UMOs target norm criticism and if there was any differences between the different professions in how norm-critical and inclusive they were. This was examined by a discourse analysis inspired by Foucault and based on Judith Butler's theory of the heterosexual matrix. The study found that "Ask UMO" in 350 of the sections 425 questions reached UMOs goal to be the norm-critical and inclusive. The survey also showed that there were no major differences between professions in how norm-critical they were. The conclusion was that "Ask UMO" in the vast majority of their responses did a good job of being a norm-critical and inclusive, but that normative beliefs sometimes reproduced and that it is therefore important that a norm-critical appraisal is done.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to deepen the understanding of the challenges and pos-sibilities that the implementation of systematic follow- ups can entail in social work. The systematic follow-up is an example of public knowledge governance. The empirical material is retrieved from a research project in Sweden, in the years 2014 – 2016, where the purpose was to support the implementation of systematic follow-ups of work directed at children in their capacity of relatives. Methodologically, the Scandinavian model is applied for participatory action research. The result shows that the work is characte-rized by uncertainty and that two systems of follow-ups existed. The follow-up systems were directed from different competing institutional logics.

Social services support groups for children as next of kin – methods and goals2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Children as next of kin are now regarded as a risk group in social services. A common effort for these children is support groups for children with similar problems, for example families with abuse, mental or physical illness. Most support groups are run municipally but also by county/regional bodies, non-profit organizations and churches, and sometimes the municipality works jointly with other organizations. Knowledge of support groups’ methods and results is limited and National Board of Health and Welfare recommends social services to implement systematic monitoring as part of evidence-based practice, EBP. Before this monitoring it is important to have knowledge and understanding of the goals of the support groups and how the work proceeds. The aim of this presentation is to elucidate the social services’ support groups for children as next of kin, to ascertain the goals and what is central in the work of support groups. With a participatory action research approach, a qualitative study was performed in 2015/2016. Seven Swedish municipalities took part and 23 people were interviewed, 18 group leaders and five managers.

Objectives/Outcomes: The respondents stated that the support group’s purpose was educational but they could have therapeutic effects. The goals of support groups addressed the children but in some cases also the family. The goals of the seven groups can be divided into three levels: 1) Acquiring knowledge; 2) Learning to cope with different situations; 3) Emotional processing. Support groups used manual-based methods, mixed methods and methods that they themselves had devised. The methods were the starting point, but other aspects were perceived as central to the performance: a) flexibility; b) preparation; c) cooperation with parents; d) professional approach. Flexibility meant not using the method rigorously but adapting it to the target group and modifying it according to what the group leader considered important. Preparatory work meant that the group leaders met parents and children several times before the support effort started. These talks emphasized the priority of the group sessions, getting participants to realize that it can be laborious, and starting collaboration with parents. Collaboration with the parents was deemed crucial; if the support group did not work it was mainly due to parents’ resistance. Children’s group leaders worked to create trust in parents. A professional approach meant being observant and confronting what happened in the group. The seven support groups aimed to help key aspects of these children’s lives and development generally for all children as next of kin. The group leaders’ work was based on methods, but they decided how to use these in practice. A manual-based approach could be implemented in different ways depending on the group leaders, the situation and the children’s needs.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to provide a picture of how family administrators in Sweden describes mothers and fathers who are in a custody conflict and whether there is a difference in how they are portrayed. It is a qualitative content analysis of the custody investigation of 15 custody conflicts. This study is based on gender theory and social constructions. Previous research shows that there is a tendency among family law case workers to view the mother as the primary parent with the main responsibility to care for the child while the father is viewed as a supporting parent. On the other hand, research shows that verdicts in custody conflicts are based on factual reasons such as time spent with the child. Our study shows that although case workers may portray mothers and fathers differently in custody investigations, these descriptions of the parents can always be traced to on-topic reasons such as domestic violence or ability to care for the child. In cases were mothers and fathers are portrayed differently, it can be traced to differing discourses among case workers.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our qualitative study is to investigate how the caretakers, in the elderly care,

interpret and manage the issue of alcohol problems in elderly people. We have been

performing semi-structured interviews on 9 people, on different levels in the elderly care.

There were 3 elderly care managers, 1 nurse, 1 assistance administrator and 4 auxiliary

nurses, who all, at some level, work with alcohol problems in elderly people. Those

interviews were performed singularly, with one exception: we interviewed an elderly care

manager and her 2 auxiliary nurses at the same time. To analyse our empirics, we have used

the theories of Power and Ageism. Our study shows that the auxiliary nurses, who are the

ones who must deal with these problems, have great difficulties to perform their work because

they have no qualified knowledge about alcohol problems. In addition, they almost never get

the proper information, they don’t have access to guidelines about handling people with

alcohol problems and they don’t receive support from their superiors. They have to make the

most difficult decisions for themselves without any resources or other guidance.

    Abstract [en]

This study discloses home-care organizations in one municipality in Sweden and five units work with implementing the social services legislated value base for elderly people. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of personnel and managers perception of the value base and its implementation in the practical work with the elderly. A qualitative method has been used to analyze the questions raised by the aim of this study. The empirical data was retrieved by semi-structured interviews with managers and their personnel in homecare service The empirical data was analyzed on the basis of the neo-institutional theory, Michael Lipsky’s theory concerning street-level bureaucrats and previous research regarding implementation of social policy and the practical home-care work. The result present that the value base is considered to be a vague idea. Both managers and personnel states that there has been minor changes in the units since the legislative change. Despite that, the results also show that the managers and the personnel consider the value base to be important for the elderly. The personnel thought it could lead to a better quality in the units. The managers had a different opinion, but they thought that the value base could generate discussions regarding the execution of the actions in the homecare services. The results of the study also reveal difficulties for the managers to implement the value base and for the personnel in the practical work with the elderly.

    Abstract [en]

This study intends to investigate the experiences of labeling on people with a ADHD diagnos and how individuals with an ADHD diagnosis handles labeling. In today's society normality is is something that is pursued and the individuals that do not meet the normality are perceived as deviant. The study is conducted with a qualitative method and is based on three autobiographies where individuals with an ADHD diagnosis writes about their life. The study deals with postmodern constructivism which is explaining that the normalization and deviances are constantly changing, both depending on time and context. The results and analysis of this study are presented under three main headings that are related to the study's research questions. Based on the findings in the empirical data concrete sub headings have been developed to gain structure. The analysis of the empirical data is based on Becker's (2006) labeling theory and is strengthened by the concepts of normalization, deviance and outsiders. The results of the study shows that individuals with an ADHD diagnosis often are labeled based on their difficulties. What is revealed in the study is that labeling takes place in different contexts and that labeling mainly took place in the school environment and in society’s construction of the norm following behavior. Another thing the study shows is that labeling does not occur as frequently in the home enviroment as in school and society’s construction. It also reveals that the actual diagnosis has a significant impact on how labeling is handled and how individuals value themselves.

Today's Children of the Dream: En fallstudie om kollektiv barnuppfostran på en israelisk barnby 2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to understand how a children's village in Israel is working to secure children's basic needs. Studies of the Israeli case give increased knowledge about children's villages as out–of–home care. Through a case study, material in the form of interviews and observations has been collected. The study has an ethnographic approach and is based on the result from five semi–structured interviews with a social worker, a children's group leader, teachers and a contact person for the children's village. The material is also based on the authors' observations. The result shows that there are different approaches to secure children's basic needs in a children's village, that every profession has an important role in each method and that stability is the most important need for a child regardless of the form of care. The result also shows that a children's village in relation to other intervention is a quick way to secure children's needs in terms of housing, food and education.

    Abstract [en]

This study has an integration policy direction as it focuses on the qualification for the new arrivals to quickly establish themselves in the labor market, and how the government's interventions, which in this case is the establishment reform, have affected municipalities and what its role is in this context. The purpose of the establishment reform is to faster the new arrivals integration in to the labor market.

The aim of this study is to analyze the interaction factors that is affecting the integration of new arrivals into the labor market by study the professionals opinions on the interplay between involved organizations in two municipalities before and after the establishment reform. Studies have shown that the establishment reform has not achieved its goal and the purpose is to analyze the aspects behind this problem.

The results of the study were analyzed with help of the interaction theory and the new institutional theory which is a part of the organization theory. An important aspect in the results of our study is the deficiency with the interaction between the participating organizations that obstruct the new arrivals path to becoming self-contained. In order to identify the problem, the study focuses on the co-operation among two communities in Sweden with the new arrivals way into the labor market. The study is based on the professional’s experience of this social context therefore we conducted seven qualitative interviews to get a reality depiction. The result showed various opinions on the advent of the establishment reform and the central deficient are co-operation difficulties and regulation limits the professional way to work. Further, the study concludes that some of the professionals assume that the establishment is an operating reform while other finds it insufficient, but what they have in common is that they find that the working methods need to be more distinct in order to achieve a better function of the establishment reform.

Guardianship for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities: Accountant, Advocate or ‘Family’ Member?2018In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 256-265Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The overarching aim of this study is to explore guardianship in terms of its impact on daily lives of adults with intellectual disabilities in Sweden. Based on qualitative interviews, the article focuses on the expected and actual role of limited guardians for people with intellectual disabilities in the context of Swedish laws. Our findings show that the legal definition of limited guardianship is unclear, and that this lack of clarity among other dilemmas creates conflict among clients, guardians, relatives, professionals and care workers. The guardian may be expected to act as an accountant, a legal advocate, or even a surrogate family member. The result is consistent with previous research in other countries on the consequences of guardianship. The current legislation on limited guardianship is in need of amendment in order to avoid legal uncertainty and ambiguity among clients and their support network.

Family caregivers and decision-making for older people with dementia2019In: Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law, ISSN 0964-9069, E-ISSN 1469-9621, Vol. 41, no 3, p. 321-338Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the dilemmas concerning legislation, individual autonomy and the reality of everyday life for people coping with dementia. We describe and analyse decision-making in relation to older people with dementia in Sweden, within the area of social work regulated by the Social Services Act and the Parental Act. Swedish legislation is based on the individual's autonomy and capacity to consent to services without anyone having legal authority to decide on behalf of the individual. Based on data from interviews with family caregivers living at home, decision-making through family caregivers is discussed and formal guardianship is also considered. Swedish legislation leaves individuals with dementia and family caregivers in a vacuum between self-determination and full autonomy with the ideal of citizenship emphasised and recognised in the Social Services Act on the one hand, and on the other, a strong need for support in everyday life and with decision-making.

    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my study is to describe the relationship between housing supporters and clients based on the experience of the residential support. Six semi-structured interviews were analyzed and as shown in the results, personal qualities such as empathy, ability to listen, respect and skills and professional approach are building blocks in the creation of the relationship between housing supporters and clients. Further on, the result has been analyzed by using theories in symbolic interactionism and dramaturgical perspective for finding new angles and perspectives in the result. The result of this study is that a relationship between housing supporters and clients is important and requires both the client's and housing support’s involvement. The study is relevant to social work by increasing awareness that housing support is an important social initiative that helps people with mental disabilities.

The aim of the study is to analyze the understanding of how curators at Bloton Open Care look at collaboration with actors linked to their work. A qualitative method was used and the data was based on semi-structured interviews with six curators from Bloton Open Care and additionally one of the managers.

The findings point to that collaboration is crucial in the work with children and families if the child or family is in contact with several social service organizations. The curators emphasize the importance of being able to see their own part in collaborative work and consequently being humble while helping others. The understanding of others is grounded in transparency of the participant's shortcomings as well as the company´s. The prerequisites for collaborative work become more efficient if the purpose behind the collaboration is clear and all participants in the collaboration are familiar with the matter.

    Abstract [en]

This is a candidate’s thesis for the programme for Social Workers at the Linneaus University in Växjö. This study has the purpose to understand what protective-factors that may be important for children who grow up in a risk environment. This has been done through reading autobiographies written by adults who have been born and raised in destructive environments. The data has been collected with the use of a narrative analysis. The result has then been viewed and analyzed with the help of attachment-theory, a salutogene perspective and with ecological systems theory.

The results from this candidate’s thesis shows that we have been able to identify protective factors in three major categories; Individual attributes, relationships and factors that exists outside of the family environment. These factors have been analyzed and explained through the perspective of attachment-theory, a salutogene perspective and with ecological systems theory. Our findings suggest that there exists several important relationships between our result, the previous research and what the theories suggest is important for children as protective factors. They are: basic need of security, need of development and understanding and finally an importance in the needs for children to have a sense of coherence.

The aim of this study was researching social workers’ attitudes towards applications having the purpose of safety promotion in order to increase the understanding of their position within the decision making process. Eight interviews with eight informers, whereof seven women and one man, were conducted using a qualitative approach. The result showed that the work situation of the social worker are affected by different aspects which leads to either an increased or a decreased discretion. The following factors are evident: the structure of the organization, guidelines and action strategies. The result also showed that the concept of safety is perceived differently between the social workers because the Social Services Act is a goal-oriented frame law. Furthermore, the result showed that safety is a part of the work even though the word safety is not always used.

To collect empiricism for this study semi structed interviewes was conducted with eight employees within family-treating residential care. These interviews were later processed through a content analysis, it becomes clear that the participants acknowledged the importance of user influence within its own treatment. Further on, the result has been analysed by the theory called empowerment and previous research within the current subject, ”user influence within family-threating residential care”. However, the result of this study is that the user influence should always exist though in certain circumstances it should be limited.

    Abstract [en]

Sexual abuse is a global issue that can result in psychosocial consequences for the on that has been abused. Statistics show that girls and boys in high school age are among the group that are most vulnerable to sexual abuse and studies shows that high school counselors have or should have resources that can help students that has been abused. The purpose of this study is, through interviews study the work of high school counselors regarding students that have been sexually abused but also how they work to prevent sexual abuse. We also wanted to investigate if there are any differences in the mode of work depending on gender. Our study is based on interviews of six high school counselors that we interviewed in person at their work place. To analyze our data, we took help from previous research on the subject but also theories about action space, sexuality and gender. Our result shows that the high school counselors work in different ways to help students that have been sexually abused but there are no specific guidelines on how the high school counselors are supposed to work to prevent sexual abuse and deal with students that have been abused. Their main job is to be a support system for the student if she or he need to talk to somebody and guide the student through the process of pressing chargers or contacting different authorities. It became evident in our study that prevention and the way of dealing with sexual abuse needs to improve in the high school counselors’ work, which most of the school counselors said themselves. None of the counselors said that they work differently based on the student´s gender but half of them used the word boy when describing the perpetrator and girl when describing the victim. With the help of our theory we could see that there is a perception in society where the male gender is often seen as the perpetrator and that this perception affects how high school counselors see and talk about sexual abuse. This perception makes it also more difficult for boys to talk about sexual abuse and also realize when they have been victims of sexual abuse.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to understand the knowledge of the school counselor and their room for manoeuvre regarding cyberbullying among students. We have used a qualitative method, which consists of eight semi-structured interviews with six middle school student counselors and two high school student counselors, in a middle-sized municipality in Sweden. Our study showed that the school counselors have limited knowledge about cyberbullying due to the fast development of the internet, and limited time in their work. The limited knowledge affects the school counselor’s way of work, and how they use their room for manoeuvre on cyberbullying. All the school counselors in this study make no difference in the way they work to identify traditional bullying versus cyberbullying. Today, bullying occurs in two arenas, the physical room and the virtual room. Due to the fact that bullying can occur any time of the day, the limits for responsibility of the school counselors and when the parent’s responsibility comes in, is unclear. This study shows that the school counselors have too much on their desk, which entails that they have limited knowledge on how to handle the problem of cyberbullying. The result of the study shows that the school counselors have various knowledge and they use their room for manoeuvre in different ways.

    Abstract [en]

This article is about social workers that assess disabled people’s needs and their abilities to implement a new way of working. The National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) in Sweden are developing a new way of working in these cases and it’s supposed to make the social work more evidence based. The National Board of Health and Welfare has already developed this kind of instrument for the social workers who assess needs of children and elderly people and now it’s time for those who work with disabled people. Therefore, I have chosen to study which possibilities these social workers have to implement this new method called IBIC (Individens Behov I Centrum - The individual’s needs in focus, my translation). I have based my study on three factors that are important that the persons involved in an implementation have in order for the implementation to succeed. They are: comprehension, capability and willingness. The aim was to get an understanding based on the three factors comprehend, capability and willingness of which abilities the assessment workers have to implement IBIC and how this would affect the profession. To reach that aim I have interviewed six social workers who assess the needs of disabled persons. The social workers were chosen because of their work title and after approval by their managers. I was able to get one who has worked 22 years, two who has worked around 10 years and three who has just started working. This meant that I got a good distribution in length of experience. In my sample there is also one who has worked with the standardized work method for children that I mentioned earlier. The results show that most of the social workers comprehend IBIC but it is doubtful whether or not they have the capability and the willingness to implement it. The result also shows that an implementation of IBIC most likely would mean that the profession which now is based on occupational values would move towards organizational professionalism.

Data recording in performance management: trouble with the logics2017In: American Journal of Evaluation, ISSN 1098-2140, E-ISSN 1557-0878, Vol. 38, no 2, p. 190-204Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, performance management (PM) has become a buzzword in public sector organizations.Well-functioning PM systems rely on valid performance data, but critics point out thatconflicting rationale or logic among professional staff in recording information can undermine thequality of the data. Based on a case study of social service staff members, the authors explore threerecording logics. The findings reveal a complexity of recording behavior and show how frontline staffshift between recording logics according to the situation. The actual data recordings depend notonly on the overall logic but also on factors such as attitudes, assumptions, and motives. The authorssuggest that shifting recording logics weaken the validity of performance data. These shifts underminethe idea of PM as a trustworthy strategy to bridge the gap between professional and managerialstaff, as well as the possibility of a well-informed management.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to examine, describe and analyze how masculinities can be represented and understood among boys in a Swedish primary school context. The study was conducted within a school located in a small community on the country side. Through the use of a qualitative research design we interviewed 13 boys from the fifth grade of this school, who all got to express and reason their perspectives of what it meant to them to be a boy in primary school and how that could impact their social life. For a wider understanding of the different dimensions of masculinity we used R.W. Connell's (2008) theoretical framework, hegemonic masculinity, which implies that there are multiple definitions of masculinities that are constructed in relation to each other in a hierarchical order. Hereby every man is positioned in a hierarchical order depending on to which degree he embodies the ideal conceptions of how a man should be within the specific context. These ideal conceptions are further more constantly changing and therefore alter through both time and space. The results of this study could show that ideals more commonly related to the concept of being a man from a regional perspective in society also could be found in the specific and local school context. In line with previous studies, this research could also indicate that boys who deviate to far from the existing ideal conceptions of how a boy should be, was combined with a much greater risk of being excluded from the fellowship among the boys in the class. This was made identifiably distinctive in cases where boys surpassed the masculine ideals and instead practiced such ideals that were more commonly associated with girls. The study could also show that in order to reach a high level of status as a boy in school seemed to imply that you had to adapt to the norms being set by the dominating group. This concludes that the dominating group of boys in the class also, to a high degree, was in power of controlling and changing the ideals that all the other boys then in some ways had to relate to.

Title: Honour as argument- A qualitative study of approaches and attitudes towards the concept of “honour” in verdicts regarding Section 2 of the LVU.  [Translated title]

    Supervisor: Barzoo Eliassi

    Assessor: Anette Lundin

The aim of this study was to extend comprehension of which approaches and attitudes towards violence and oppression in the name of “honour” may be of significance in the social services investigations and judgments relating to section 2 of the LVU. The empirical material are based on ten verdicts, some including girls who were exposed to “honour related violence” and others including girls who were not exposed. To analyze the verdicts in this study, we examined the arguments authorities used for the decision on LVU through a text-analysis. The main conclusion of the study were that the social welfare authorities combined the concept of “honour” with culture and that “honour” was seen as something dangerous for the girls. This cultural interpretation creates an Orientalist view and divides people into "us” and “them" which can lead to discrimination and racism of certain cultural groups.

    Abstract [en]

The last major change occurred in 2005 when the new sexual offenses law came into force with an increased focus on children. The purpose of this study is that through a content analysis to identify and understand the construction of children in the new legislation on sexual offenses on the basis of preliminary work. Based on the purpose we came up with two questions: How are children constructed in the preparatory works to the new sexual offenses law? Are they attributed to child characteristics and responsibilities in the new legislation on sexual offenses and if so, how? In order to achieve the purpose of the study we have chosen the preparatory works to the new legislation on sexual offenses from 2005 until today. The study's empirical work has been further narrowed to the children, which means that a distinction is made in the new legislation on sexual offenses to 6 chapter 4-6 §§. The theoretical starting point is the childhood sociology and the method used is a content analysis. The result shows that the preparation of children in the new legislation on sexual offenses can be divided into continuous central themes: children 's agency, children than in adults and children's properties and responsibility.

    Abstract [en]

Research on psychosocial health in social work isn't developed enough. Instead, there's much more research on psychosocial unhealth. What about social workers, the unhealth is often related to the situation at work and the work environment.

The aim of this study was to "during interviews understand the factors which social workers experience as important to maintain their own psychosocial health in the life situations". With hermeneutic method the particular interest was directed on how the participants experienced and explained their psychosocial health on the basis of their life situations, and the results was analyzed with Antonovsky's (1991/2005) perspective directed on health and Sense of Coherence (SOC). In the study, we used a qualitative form of interviews which allowed our participants to answer with their own words and from how they interpreted the questions. We have made interviews with eight social workers in a average municipality in Sweden. The results are shown qualitatively in current text. With our interest in social workers´ psychosocial health, we have understood that it's complicated to make a partition line between the life at work and the private life when it comes to the social workers´ experiences of factors that helps to maintain psychosocial health. Instead, it's about to understand the social worker's psychosocial health as a whole, on the basis of the work as well as the private life. In comparison to research on psychosocial unhealth, our participants said that it's especially the private life, rather than the life at work, that influences and sometimes even controls the psychosocial health in general. Nevertheless, there were plural factors at work which were experienced as especially important to maintain the psychosocial health, for example a "good director", "good colleagues", "ability to let go of the liability for clients" and a working situation where you "work two together" plus "experience and knowledge" from the whole life situations. In private life, and in addition to work, the experiences were about "enriching leisure time", social support from friends and family and the ability to make "reasonable demands and limits for yourself" in private life as well as at work.

    Abstract [sv]

This study is based on interviews with heads of unit, care staff and senior representatives from a total of six people. We have in this study directed our focus on care quality in the elderly as a concept in development. It appears, when the elderly do not have any dependents, it is even more important that staff supports some extra where no relatives are involved.

Quality of life is the broader concept of good quality care and where a good quality of care is a necessary condition for a good quality of life. According to the social services care is the target that older people will live a good life and be allowed to live in a safe environment, which we intend to investigate in this study. Opportunity for greater influence should now be given to older people and their families on how interventions should be designed and implemented. What our interviews point out is that the focus is on the relational level and not on the material plane, as demonstrated in our study. In relation to our questions, we believe we have got a good foundation for what good care quality stands for.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how care staff in residential care perceive and work with elderly mental health and how these perceptions and work is related to aging. We have gathered our empirical material through eight qualitative interviews and vignettes with care staff in residential care. The study was conducted in a municipality with 10 000 to 20 000 inhabitants in southern Sweden. The material was analyzed with use of ageism as a theoretical frame of reference. The results showed that the care staff had different perceptions of mental illness in general and regarding the elderly. The results also showed lack of resources in terms of education, time and staffing. Care staff had the ambition to provide the time and support for older people with mental illness, but this ambition was most of the time not possible to implement due to the lack of resources. Medication treatment was therefore the common treatment method. Caring staff advocated psychological assistance to mental health in general, however this treatment was never mentioned as a suitable therapy for the elderly.

    Abstract [en]

The United Nation’s definition of honour based violence (HRV) in 1999 defines women’s exposure of violence related to honour. In Sweden, HRV was regarded as a social problem in the 1990’s, when women were murdered by their close family members. Loss of honour was explained as a reason for the killings. Ever since the beginning of debate in Swedish media, science has noticed the complexity of HRV.

The aim of this study was to examine how Swedish social services and administrative courts constructed honour based violence (HRV) when law of mandatory care of minors is used in court cases. The lawsuits regarded both females and males, in the ages of 10-17 years old. We used a document analysis of thirteen court cases from 2016 regarding 2§ Law of mandatory care of minors (LVU), which is a paragraph of deficiencies in care of youths. We used the keyword Honour related violence when searching for court cases. We could determine that physical violence is constructed as legal issues when it’s explained in detail, fragmented and when the minor was regarded as believable to the administrative court. Psychological violence included the involvement of threats, threats of physical violence and threats of forced marriages, and was all seen as an integrated view on violence. Honour was constructed as an isolation of the youths, limiting their social and leisure time and the children were controlled by their guardians. According to social services and administrative courts, the control was not seen as age appropriate.

    Abstract [en]

Our purpose with this study was to understand how social welfare board perceive neglect and what they consider are unacceptable flaws in parental capacity. The central focus of the study is located in the assessment of the social welfare boards when they consider that the parental capacity is unacceptable. The study aims to answer the following questions:

How does social welfare board understand neglect?

How perceive social welfare board unacceptable parental capacity?

Our study is based on a document analysis of fourteen cases from administrative rulings where social welfare board applied for LVU 1§ 2§ because of flaws in care. We have used hermeneutic interpretation to look at the empirical material. The theoretical framework of the study consists systems theory and Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model with focus on the family as the basic system.

The result we found was that the unacceptable parental capacity consisted of  parental individual problems. Problems we could identify at the parents were mental illness, disability, relationship conflicts, violence and abuse. Social welfare board had payed attention to several types of neglect. We identified moral care, emotional care, physical care and fysical violence.

Our conclusion is that it not only was just one specific problem in the family without that it were several parallel problems which led to that social welfare board consisted that the parental capacity is unacceptable. The study shows that the term neglect is difficult to define and is a interpretation question of the social welfare board to assess whether each boundary goes where the child is considered to fare badly.
