    Abstract [en]

    This study examines what kind of measures have been put in place since the accident years of 2006-2007, when a large number of accidents occurred on board vessels in Swedish waters, and how these measures have affected Swedish dock worker’s safety when working in enclosed spaces on board ships. A literary study was conducted to pin point what kind of measures had been put in place since the accident years of 2005-2007. Four qualitative interviews were performed with persons in charge of safety matters in four Swedish ports to get an understanding of how their work has changed since 2006. The results indicate that gas measuring equipment was not used before the accidents, but that a rise in usage of such equipment has made the work safer and that the safety related work has been made less time consuming with more efficient computer based programs when dealing with legislation, work permit and checklists. But the results could not connect these changes to any of the measures that were examined.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines the energy consumption of the biogas production plant More Biogas. The energy usage of the facility is mapped, and the data is used to construct a model of the site in Microsoft Excel where flowrates and energy requirements are calculated based on set frequency of individual components. To see if the calculated result of the model can be considered valid, the model is tested by replicating the plants operation at two separate occasions. The result presented by the model is then compared to the actual measured energy consumption and the difference between the results is discussed. The boundaries for the mapping process was to only use the control system on site and simple tools that could be found in most workshops.

     

    Results presented by the model concerning the electric power consumption fell short of the measured value by 17-25 % but because the energy mapping is limited in that it did not cover all the areas of the site, the results may still be considered valid. The study show that an energy mapping of an existing industrial process is possible with only simple tools but the task of making the results match real values as much as possible, requires more time.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper takes a look at the tonnage tax implemented in Sweden in 2017. The paper presents basic information about the tonnage tax in Sweden and a comparison to its neighbouring countries Finland and Denmark to give the reader understanding why Sweden has decided to implement the new tonnage tax system. The paper asks the question of how the new system affects a shipping company in practice through a case study of three different vessels where the economic result is presented through a result calculation in simplified form. Furthermore the paper asks the question whether the vessels size or what type of vessel it is, affect the economic result, positively or negatively. The paper shows that there is a major difference, between ships of different sizes, whether it is positive or negative to adopt the new system. The paper also shows that there are large differences in costs for the new system depending on what type of vessel it concerns.

    Abstract [en]

    Decision making is the most important of all managerial activities. The purpose of this study is to examine how commanders experience decision-making processes on board and in the surrounding organization. The survey was conducted through interviews with three masters. Interviews were chosen to listen to the interviewees’ perceived world and they have been semi-structured, as support an interview guide has been used. In this shape it is possible to follow threads or whim but also to go back and clarify. As a background for analyze, theories of decision-making, responsibility in shipping and work in teams or groups are described. The analysis has been based on a model of decision theory. The result is a story by the decision making process and it gave two interesting conclusions: when control by management companies is increasing masters experience loss of power and distance to decisions but on the other hand they are clear that they are in charge and acquire strategies for retaining that.

    Abstract [en]

    Risk communication in a modern maritime environment is unmistakably important but how does it fare against today’s science? This study focuses on a small part of risk communication, namely the differences in using one mean of communication as opposed to multiple means of communication. What positive and negative sides are involved in exchanging information through only one mean of communication as opposed to giving and receiving the information through many?  The method is a literature study and the material ten accident reports made by administrative authorities. The reports have been analyzed and compared to modern subject science literature. The result of the study favor multiple means of communication such as public address systems, signs, general alarm and through the crew. The different ways create a redundancy and succeeds better at reaching a diversity of people. The negative sides, including confusion caused by too much or deviating information, appears to historically have been exaggerated. This is probably due to a false belief that man behaves irrationally in a state of crisis. The risk communication of the future is as such thick in information and comes through multiple means of communication.

    Abstract

     

    Renewable biogas fuel has become increasingly interesting around the world, however before biogas is used as fuel in vehicles it must first be upgraded. During that process the hydrocarbons and other pollutions are separated to increase the concentration of methane and make the biogas better suited for combustion engines (Enefalk and Ersöz 2016).

     

    The purpose of this study was to examine how efficiently different filters can remove impurities from amine at Puregas Solutions AB upgrading plant. After the investigation of the different filters was completed we wanted to further study the maintenance of the filters. Experiments were performed at Puregas Solutions AB workshop, where the amine samples from their plant in Sweden were used to see how well the various filters performed.

     

    After receiving the test results from Dow Chemical Company, the results were compiled and they showed that the tested filters did not remove impurities from the amine.

    Abstract [en]

    Bridge Resource Management (in short BRM) is today a natural part of ship handling, with its purpose of enhancing safety. The accidents, on the other hand, are not declining by a desired rate. This study has therefore posed the question of how working deck officers experience training in BRM and how it is contributing to safety. The theoretical basis is the concept of non-technical skills. The conclusion is that every vessel is unique when it comes to BRM. Seemingly abstract faculties as attitude and behavior shown by the crewmembers combined with practical, nautical competence and experience are key factors for safe ship handling. Every moment of BRM-training should be a unique event, and therefore arranged keeping the specific needs and background of the participants in mind.

    Abstract [en]

    The study aimed to investigate why young Swedish women applies for maritime academies, thier expecations before and during beginning their studies and how their surroding reacted to their chosen field of study. This study also aimed to investigare what motivations and possible fears the female students have during their studies and at the thought of a future career at sea. For the study, a questionnaire survey was selected as method, with target group consisting of all female marine officer students at Linnéaus University and Chalmers University of Technology.

    The result showed that Swedish female students tend to enter the maritime academies based on feelings, rather than experience, and that Swedish female students are more willing than Polish female students to try a profession they have non or little experience of. The Swedish students families are in greater occurrence approving their chosen filed of studies. Both Swedish and Polish students expected to experience problems in uniting a career at sea with family life. A very low amount of the Swedish students aimed to become a senior officers or a Captians in the future. A large group of the Swedish students experienced psychical challenges during their internships.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med denna studie var att mäta och jämföra de bullernivåer som en passagerare utsätts för på SL:s pendelbåtslinje 80, Sjövägen, med SL:s busslinjer 443 och 76. Sträckan Nacka Strand – Nybroplan var lämplig för att båda fordonens start och slutpunkt är belägna nära varandra och båda trafikslagen är valbara alternativ för passageraren.  I denna studie genomfördes bullermätningar ombord i enheten dB(A) med en loggande ljudtrycksmätare.  Studien genomfördes som en fallstudie där metoden designades för att undersöka ljudnivån under en normal resa. Resultatet redovisas med hjälp av framräknade medelvärden och diagram från mätinstrumentet.  Slutsatserna som drogs var att bullernivåerna på både pendelbåtarna och bussarna var likvärdiga trots ett stort antal variabler. Ljudnivån i passagerarutrymmet visade sig ha en tydlig koppling till fordonets hastighet och motorbelastning. En annan slutsats var att ökat passagerarantal i passagerarutrymmet verkar ha en dämpande effekt på ljudnivån ombord.

    Abstract [en]

    In this thesis, we examine how nautical officer experience the medical responsibility aboard. On every vessel, there is a medicine chest that contains medical supply that could be needed in case of injury or sickness. It is the nautical officer’s duty to be able to handle the equipment to treat the patient in the best way. The nautical officer can if needed contact Tele Medical for advice or to get prescribed medicine. It is an experience description where the authors aim to examine and survey how nautical officers experience the medical situations they might have to confront and take care of when aboard. The thesis was performed with a semi structured qualitative method. The study consists of interviews with 8 nautical officers. The result of the thesis showed that none of the interviewed nautical officers experienced feeling comfortable in the position as medical responsibility. The nautical officers experience that the support they get from Tele Medical and other persons in the crew aboard as a relief in the medical responsibility. The thesis showed that the nautical officers experienced it burdensome to be alone with the delegated responsibility as medical officer.

    Abstract 

    This Thesis is about finding the reason why the electronic bill of lading is not actively used in international trade. Bill of lading is the oldest transport document that is still used in maritime transport. In this thesis the legal method is combined with interviews with concerned parties who is working daily with these documents, two representatives from two different banks. The results show that the reason behind the lack of interest in eB/L is that there is no security behind the negotiable document. As of today, there is no convention or law that supports an electronic transfer of a document of title. To use these transfers the document must be non-negotiable and cannot be traded to a third party during the voyage. To solve the transfer of the documents, some companies have implemented the blockchain system as a safe way to trade documents of title electronically.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this report is to survey the experience of loneliness and social isolation among third- and fourth-year students at the Kalmar Maritime Academy, during their time at sea. The purpose is also to shed light on the consequences that these students may experience. It is a quantitative study, more specifically a survey-study where the students were questioned about their experiences of loneliness and social isolation as well as a number of factors and symptoms related to these feelings. The gathered answers were analyzed and compared in order to find any patterns of association. Our conclusion is that experiences of loneliness and social isolation are relatively common among the students. These feelings are associated with symptoms like depression and a decrease in performance. There are a number of variables that are associated these feelings, such as the relation to the supervisor, martial status, the atmosphere and fellowship onboard.

    Main Switchboard Drawing: Att skapa elscheman för huvudinstrumenttavla2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    This project was commissioned by Ölandsfärjan AB to manufacture wiring diagrams for the main switchboard on board their ship M/S Solsund. The reason for this was that there was no documentation found on the main switchboard and this complicated the process of troubleshooting and maintenance. Therefore, Ölandsfärjan AB required wiring diagrams, which could be used to see cabinet functions and the contexture of the wiring.  The task was to create a layout diagram that would be able to provide a description for the physical positions of indicator lights and buttons on the front of the main switchboard. The task was also to create a circuit diagram of the consuming section and a circuit diagram of power supply section of the main switchboard, the purpose for this was to reveal the functions and output feeds. The power supply consists of two generators and also the opportunity for shore connection. Separate circuit diagrams of the generators' control boxes were also constructed for the circuit breaker tripping protection devices. For all diagrams a common device list was made. The project began to create wiring diagrams of the main switchboard. The work methods for the detection were performed by visually monitoring the cables or measuring the cables' resistance. Finally, the diagrams were made in the computer program Easy EL.

    Den här rapporten handlar om hur vi har gått till väga när vi byggde en luftsolfångare och vilka tankar och funderingar som har dykt upp längs med arbetets gång. Vi ville veta hur svårt det egentligen var att bygga en luftsolfångare på egen hand och hur mycket det egentligen skulle kosta jämfört med de som redan finns att köpa i butik idag. Rapporten beskriver utförligt hur vi har gått tillväga med byggnationen och vilka tankar och idéer vi har influerats av vid byggandet. Rapporten beskriver även vad vi har fått fram för resultat från energiutvinningen med just vår luftsolfångare samt lite tankar och funderingar kring vad man skulle kunna ändra på för att göra den bättre eller anpassa den efter just sina egna behov.

    Vi kom fram till att en billig solfångare som fungerar är fullt möjlig att bygga så som vi har gjort det. Vill man däremot bygga en solfångare för dagligt bruk som skall ge en hög effekt bör man lägga ner lite mer tid och pengar för att få en fullt fungerande produkt

    Abstract

    This study has been made to research the development in fire safety and fire fighting on seagoing vessels. In that the fire fighting team can be alleviated and assisted by a Water Mist Barriers help against the fire hazards.

    Fires are often caused by accidents or machine failures onboard vessels, in some of this cases there is enough time to act quickly and in other cases the crew is notified by the fire detecting system. In the scenarios where the fire has been given time to progress, or is caused to burn in a highly flammable substance, it becomes very difficult to gain control over the conflagration at any rapid pace. This decreases the time for the crew to assemble and prepare for a fire fighting action.

    It is for this kind of situations that a Water Mist Barrier can be used as a protection. Its purpose is to gain time for the crew to regroup and perform a decisive countermeasure. Quick advances towards the fire, hazard observation, placing of the Water Mist Barrier and then withdraw to regroup for new orders of action.

    Another fire hazardous scenario can transpire on a passenger cruise, where passengers need to be evacuated between hazardous areas that can be heated or filled with smoke. In such an occurrence the Water Mist Barriers water curtain would create a separation between the passenger and the hazard, which would block the radiation heat and create a path for the passengers to be evacuated by.

    The Water Mist Barrier should be a tool to ease the fire extinguishing work, its water curtain would provide with a shield and its main purpose is to improve the response time for a quick and planed fire hazard response on seagoing vessels.

    Abstract [en]

    The work investigates costs and challenges with a marine wet scrubber with regard to the sulfur requirements in shipping as well as the requirements that will enter into force on 1 January 2020. As a basis, scrubber installations are implemented and put into use, as well as information from manufacturers and classification society. The survey results show that there are challenges with a scrubber, but that at today's oil prices it is economically justifiable to carry out an installation if it is technically possible on the ship. The result also shows that scrubbing technology is still new and undergoing major development.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper was to examine which types of solar cells are available on the Swedish market, their technical properties and the economic conditions for photovoltaics in Sweden. The method consisted of a literature study and a market survey.

    The result showed that photovoltaics are well established on the Swedish market and that it is monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon solar cells which dominate. Silicon cells have the advantage of an unlimited supply of the chemical element. However the manufacturing process is an energy consuming. Furthermore, the results showed that a small part of the market is made up of thin film solar cells of CIGS and CdTe. Thin films have a thickness down to a micrometer and the manufacturing process is easier and less energy consuming.

    The condition for photovoltaics in Sweden is less favorable than in countries situated further south. The prerequisite also varies largely in Sweden. Only with the help of subsidies may photovoltaic on a smaller scale be made economically viable today.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med detta arbete var att för Sjöfartshögskolans räkning skapa en elkretssimulator till distanskursen El- och automationsteknik för driftpersonal ombord och i land med kursstart hösten 2016. Universitetsadjunkt Tobias Hedin gav oss i uppdrag att ta fram en webbaserad simulator samt beräkningar för den samma. Genomförandet delades upp i två faser där den inledande fasen var att skaffa en överblick omvilka programmeringsspråk som skulle användas samt ta fram beräkningsunderlag för de mätningsförfaranden som simulatorn skulle simulera. Den andra fasen var att programmera och formge simulatorn och till se att koden följer de krav uppsatta av beställaren. Simulatorn programmerades i språken HTML5, CSS och JavaScript där koden validerades emot rådande standarder och normer. Samtidigt utfördes även alla beräkningar som sedan verifierades genom att jämföra resultatet jämtemot värden från datorprogrammet OrCad. Resultatet av projektet blev en väl fungerade simulator som mötte alla krav och specifikationer uppsatta i uppdragsdirektivet.

    Abstract [en]

    On January 1, 2015 new regulations restricting the use of sulphur in marine fuel oils apply. Because of this, the Icebreaker Oden will be converted from operating on heavy fuel oil to use low sulphur diesel oil to meet the requirements. This study is produced to show how a fuel conversion affects the operation of the icebreaker Oden and any technical problems that may arise and how these problems will be resolved. Drawings and instruction books supplied by the vessel has been used, among other things, to produce a new heat balance as well as to see how difference in energy content between diesel and heavy fuel oil affects the vessel. In some cases manufacturers has been contacted to get answers on specific questions. No significant changes needed to be done to the existing configuration to enable a conversion. The existing fuel system can therefore be used. The heat balance calculation gave interesting results as it shows that the heat requirements does not change that much.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med detta projekt är att undersöka och säkerställa funktionen hos tre dieselgeneratorer. För att göra detta har flera undersökningar och kontroller gjorts för att slutligen utmynna i en provstart och testkörning av dieselgeneratorerna. Dessa är sedan tänkta att användas i kursen KV1 Kvalificerad Verkstad. Med denna utrustning kan låga risker för personskador säkerställas även hos användare med begränsad erfarenhet av liknande utrustning. Idag finns endast datorsimuleringar eller utrustning som inte kan användas direkt av eleverna själva på grund av kostnader och risker vid felaktigt handhavande. Under projektet har mycket arbete lagts ned på att göra systemet lättförståeligt även för den som inte har tidigare erfarenhet av dessa typer av system och anläggningar. Projektet har bestått av en grundlig planering och studie i nödvändigt arbete för att få motorerna driftklara. De reservdelar som behövdes inköptes och monterades. Motorerna har efter undersökningar visat sig vara i gott skick, och har endast behövt kringsystem för att starta.

    The project was assigned by the company Lackeby Products AB, which manufactures sludge treatment units. The assignment consisted of developing and supplementing their existing sludge treatment units with a login and registration system using PLC and RFID reader. The purpose was to produce a prototype of the control cabinet with functions according to the assignment description. The work consisted of researching which components that were needed and then create a program for the process and build a prototype cabinet for evaluation. The work was done with basis from manufacturers and the company as well as own experiences. The result became a control cabinet for thesludge treatment units according to previous features, supplemented with a login and registration system with functions as described in the assignment.

    Abstract [en]

    This is a qualitative interview study researching the experience engine room personnel have with using headset communication in their work onboard. A total of six crewmembers were interviewed about their experiences and how headset communication had affected their ability to perform their work, personal safety and time efficiency. The results showed that communication had improved with the use of headsets and that speech communication where no longer limited by high noise levels which in turn leads to less strain on the voice. The interviewed crew members testified that the improved communication facilitated their work and enhanced the personal safety by decreasing the risk for misunderstandings and increasing their situational awareness. Increased ergonomics in situations with difficult working postures and limited space in comparison with hand held radios were also observed as an advantage with headset communication. Time efficiency was perceived to improve since the availability of other crewmembers on the radio increased and decreased the need for moving to another area to communicate which at the same time lead to faster response times. Increased availability of crewmembers on the radio could also shorten the time before an accident in the engine room is detected since a failure to answer a radio call would be seen as irregular behavior.

    De senaste åren har utsläppsreglerna för sjöfarten blivit allt hårdare och under de kommande åren skärps de ännu mer. För att svaveldirektiven för sjöfarten ska fungera effektivt så krävs det också att de efterlevs. Syftet med den här studien var därför att undersöka hur länderna i Europeiska SECA områdena agerar och kommer att agera i framtiden för att se till att svaveldirektiven efterlevs. Studien syftar också till att undersöka hur efterlevnadskontroller genomförs, samt se om länderna har infört sanktioner mot överträdelser och vad dessa innebär. För att få svar på detta studerades lagar och förordningar, men framförallt skickades frågeformulär ut till de ansvariga myndigheterna i flera olika länder kring SECA områdena. Slutsatsen av det här arbetet är att samtliga länder anser att efterlevnadskontroll sker i tillräcklig omfattning och alla länder använder sig av samma metod. I Sverige pågår utveckling av en optisk mätmetod för att mäta svavelhalt i avgaserna ifrån luften, men än är metoden inte tillräckligt säker för att kunna användas. Det framkom också att i flera länder anses det på grund av flera faktorer vara svårt att fälla någon ifall de bryter mot gällande svavelförordningar, därför anses det också finnas en risk för överträdelser. Detta trots att det i andra länder faktiskt sker ingripande mot överträdelser och samtliga länder använder sig av samma metoder för efterlevnadskontroll. Det saknas i dagsläget även sanktioner mot överträdelser i flera länder.

    Abstract [en]

    The last few years emission regulations for shipping have become increasingly tougher and will become even more so in the future. For the new sulfur directives to work efficiently, it is necessary that they are enforced. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the countries surrounding the SECA areas would act to ensure that the sulfur directives are enforced. The study also aims to look at how compliance checks are carried out, and also see if countries have imposed sanctions against breaches and what these mean. In order to answer these questions a lot of laws and regulations were studied, but most importantly questionnaires were sent to the responsible authorities in various countries in the SECA areas. The result from this study is that all countries consider that enforcement takes place in sufficient numbers and all countries use the same method of measuring sulfur content in fuels. In Sweden an optical measurement method to measure the sulfur content in the exhaust gases from the air is under development, but this method is still uncertain. The results also revealed that because of several factors, in some countries it is very difficult to prosecute someone if they violate current sulfur regulations, so there is a risk of ships breaking the regulations. Meanwhile in some countries they do act against breaches even though they all use the same method of enforcement. Nor is there any sanctions against breaches in several of the participating countries.

    Abstract [en]

    Drinking water onboard Kalmar Maritime Academy’s ship Calmare Nyckel has on previous sampling demonstrated insufficient quality. The reason for this has not been investigated before. This study examines and identifies the cause for the substandard water quality and support material for improvement has been developed. The material also contains a job description for rebuilding of the fresh water system and documents regarding installation of a freshwater generator. Water samples and examination of the fresh water system with endoscope was performed to verify the water quality onboard the ship. The results were analysed and a plan for improvement of water quality was recommended. The current fresh water system was investigated and unused components were identified. A description for removing the mentioned components was made. Kalmar Maritime Academy had acquired a used freshwater generator which was examined to determine whether it could be used onboard Calmare Nyckel. The examination revealed that it could not be used and the study proceeded to develop a quotation on a freshwater generator that Kalmar Maritime Academy had ordered in 2009. Material for the installation of the freshwater generator was created and includes assembly drawings, job descriptions, material requirements, plan for the assembly work and resource needs. The method and plan may in future investigations be used as aids to the improvement of water quality onboard similar vessels.

    I detta arbete utfördes en extrapolering 10 år framåt i tiden från dagens förhållanden, för att få en bild av hur norra Öresunds turfiskebåtars koncept kan komma se ut för att driftsprofilen ska vara ekonomisk lönsam och uppfylla Transportstyrelsens regler samt gällande marknadskrav. Intervjuer med redare, skeppare och kunder genomfördes för att få större inblick i hur marknaden ser ut. Resultaten visar att kundgruppen i merpart består av sporadiska sportfiskare som fiskar upp till en gång i månaden. Om rederierna kan erbjuda vad kunderna tycker gör en turfiskebåt attraktiv och andra önskemål som redovisas i detta arbete, samt att få de sporadiska sportfiskarna att fiska en eller två gånger mer per månad, ökar möjligheterna att rederierna ska bli lönsamma. Vidare diskuteras bl.a. sänkta bränsle- och personalkostnad genom att erbjuda en snabbgående turfiskebåt med upp till 12 fiskande under vardagar med låg efterfrågan. På så sätt frångår man kraven från Transportstyrelsen angående årliga besiktningar, certifikat och godtycke bland Transporstyrelsens inspektörer samtidigt som mera krävande kunders önskemål tillgodoses.

    Abstract [en]

    This article presents findings from an ongoing research project aiming to study the future of shipping operations with a specific focus on issues related to human roles, responsibilities and the organization of work. A focus group with representatives for the Swedish shipping cluster (n = 6) and academia (n = 2) has been conducted to explore potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) with the developments towards autonomous shipping. The results show an overall concern for how to realize the transition between today’s maritime traffic and a future setting where vessels may be operated from shore. Technology to automate navigational tasks and increase the degree of autonomy in shipping are developing, but more attention needs to be paid to the transition of work that may accompany the ongoing developments. Clear roles, responsibili- ties and a definition of potential operator competences need to be formulated to ensure a human-centered development for safer shipping.

    This paper presents findings from a study concerning the work environment on board Swedish passenger vessels. The study explored workrelated experiences of personnel in the service department (hotel, restaurant, catering, shops) based on individual and group interviews, observations, survey data and social insurance statistics concerning sick leave longer than 60 days. The results of this paper are based on ten semi-structured individual and group interviews with 16 respondents. The respondents were HR personnel from six shipping companies and crewmembers working onboard. The results show that in the HR personnel’s perception, healthy work environments are often associated to individual personal health activities, such as access to a gym or healthcare, lectures or other measures directed towards the individual seafarer. Aspects of the organizational and social work environments were barely mentioned as stressors or as contributing factors to an increasing number of sick absences. The interviewed crewmembers, however, highlighted the need for both organizational and social measures to foster healthy work environments. The need for employee participation within the organizational design and decision-making processes, including methods on how to conduct risk assessments prior to physical and organizational changes and follow up their consequences were emphasized. Thus, to create safe and sustainable work environments on board, more attention needs to be directed towards including shipboard personnel in the physical and organizational design of their own work environment rather than promoting a healthy lifestyle through measures directed towards the individual worker.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents findings from three workshops focused on the physical, organizational and social work environment of service crew working on board Swedish passenger vessels. The first workshop aimed to identify underlying causes of long‐term sick leave among employees in the service department, and potential measures that can be taken to reduce ill‐health. The second and third workshop explored knowledge of available methods to identify occupational safety and health risks, and suggest health‐promotion strategies at individual, team and company levels. A total of 58 persons from the Swedish maritime cluster participated in the workshops. During the workshops, open and structured brainstorming was used to create affinity diagrams to systematically summarize the identified causes, risks and strategies. Although the results presented in this article stem from a research project focused on Swedish passenger vessels, many of the findings may be transferable to an international maritime setting towards a deeper understanding of seafarers’ work environment and working conditions.

    This paper presents findings from a workshop focused on the physical, social and organizational work environment in the service department on board Swedish passenger vessels. Twentyseven maritime professionals participated to provide input to potential causes and measures for long-term sick leave. During the workshop, an affinity diagram was created to systematically order the input of the respondents. The results show a wide range of causes and potential measures across multiple organizational levels. Unclear leadership, ambiguous or high demands with limited decision latitude, as well as aspects of work organization, i.e. manning, pressure for effectiveness, and extensive working hours were identified as important contributors to long-term sick leave. Although the findings are based on a workshop with Swedish maritime professionals, the results may be transferable to the international maritime sector to gain a deeper understanding of how to create, organize and promote a safe and efficient work environment.

    Efforts to reduce shipping's environmental impact are something that is highly topical and constantly evolving. At a redirection where parts of the sea traffic from Stora Bält moved to Flintrännan, environmental impact would decrease regionally and increase locally. The purpose of this paper was to find out how the bunker consumption changed for the part of the sea traffic that were moved to Flintrännan. This could also indicate a tendency to change the contribution of shipping to air pollution in Malmö city. The conclusions were that the reference vessels almost halved the bunker consumption when they chose the shorter route via Flintrännan. It was found that shipping's total net contribution to CO2 emissions is expected to decrease by 60-190 000 tons. The result was achieved through a collection of traffic flow data and fuel calculations on three reference vessels.

    The purpose of this thesis was to examine the intention and expected outcome of the

    new Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC 2006) regarding the regulations of

    manning levels and hours of rest on Swedish vessels. Firstly, a thorough literature

    review was conducted to create a sound foundation for the following investigations.

    Given that the convention was not implemented during the work of this thesis a

    qualitative interview was carried out on three expert representatives from the Swedish

    shipping industry. The purpose of this interview was to determine the intention of the

    convention. After that a qualitative interview was carried through on four stakeholders

    in the Swedish shipping industry to investigate what their expectations of the

    convention's outcome was regarding manning levels and hours of rest. The resulting

    conclusions of theese studies show that the conventions intention is to raise the global

    standard of manning levels and hours of rest to a level that is similar to the one already

    used in the Swedish shipping industry. The expected outcome of the convention

    regarding the Swedish shipping industry was that there will be very little, or no changes

    at all.

    Abstract [en]

    With an ever decreasing Swedish tonnage more and more maritime graduates seek out other segments than the traditional Swedish trades. A major one of these segments is the Norwegian offshore market. The purpose of this study was to investigate recently graduated maritime officer’s experiences of stress and worries during their first turns as active officers and if these experiences differed depending on which segment they were active in. A qualitative method with personal interviews was used to investigate these questions. Eight recently graduated officers were interviewed, four from the traditional Swedish merchant navy and four from the Norwegian offshore industry. All graduated in the spring of 2012.The results from the interviews showed that the officers, not depending on which segment they were active in, experienced higher levels of stress during their first turns than later in their career. This was due to worry with the graduates about their own professional abilities and the increase in responsibility that graduates experience in the beginning of their careers. The study also found that lack of sleep is a major factor in the stress equation and that this was more common within the offshore industry, due to the extensive use of the two-watch system within that segment.

    Abstract [en]

    Waste-cogeneration plants are paid today to receive and burn waste. These revenues are often higher than the revenues from electricity generation and heat production, so you want to burn as much as possible in most circumstances. In order to take advantage of the surplus effect that may occur, it eliminates what you do not need.

    Nybro Energi's CHP plant in Transtorp uses 6 cooling packs with 4 fans on each in order to cool off this excess power. During installation, the goal was to be able to cool off 10MW but it turned out that during summer when the outdoor temperature became higher, the cooling power could go down to 7MW.

    Our purpose of investigation was to use a new engine with a higher cos α to test on one of the fans and see if you can increase the cooling power and reduce the consumption of the engines without the cooling packages giving higher noise levels than before.

    An alternative to only reducing the current on the old motor is to phase compensate and according to calculations the motors current can be reduces from 8.2A to 3.88A.

    It was found that the new engine when frequency controlled at 40hz pulls higher active power but significantly less reactive power that makes it cheaper in operation. During the measurements to obtain the cooling effect, doubtful values ​​were measured which showed that it cooled worse at 40hz than the previous engine despite a higher fan speed. This is not correct theoretically and it is unreasonable that it will not cool better but a figure exactly how much could not be produced. At 40hz, the new engine will also produce less noise if you choose to replace all 28 engines. This despite the fact that a fan is going to run more at a higher speed, it was found that the noise from the engine itself is lower in the new engine. If you go up to 50hz frequency and expect 28 new engines, you'll get a sound boost of 5dB at 300m compared to the old engine. This can be lowered by 3dB if you manage to eliminate the properties of the adjacent wall sound reflectors. The new engine is recommended as it has many advantages and if you want to drive at higher frequencies, you can advantageously use sound absorbers along the wall to eliminate its double effect on the noise level.

    Autonomy is expected to cause significant changes to the Maritime Traffic System (MTS). The Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) is a control system in the MTS and will be affected by new interactions caused by autonomy. The paper proposes a proactive approach in discussing the future VTS. The paper renders the historical development of socio-technical systems theory and argues for systemic evaluation of internal and external consequences of changes in the design of the future VTS. A democratic process to involve people from the various levels of the VTS organisation with different competencies is suggested. To evaluate the consequences of change, a systemic internal and external approach is suggested. For discussing internal consequences, a levelled socio-technical systems model is adapted and applied. External consequences are suggested to be discussed by applying design principles of system-of-systems to understand the interplay between VTS and the MTS.

    Abstract [en]

    This study’s objective has been to identify and evaluate a robust engineering method for the purpose of approximation and evaluation of a water hammer event in a specific pipe system design. 

    The study has been conducted in the form of qualitative studies with verifying experiments of the results from various analytical calculations. 

    The results presented and discussed in the last chapter of the essay, indicates that water hammer can be predicted and prevented by using Joukowsky's equation, formulated Johannes von Kries 1883. 

    In the most circumstances, pipe systems can be optimized to prevent water hammer consequences by selection of suitable components. Such as tube dimensions, valves, tube bending radius and the tube support design.

    The number of marine accidents caused by the human error does not decrease. A part of the human error is in the communication between different agents within the maritime cluster, at sea and also in the landbased sector. This study is a literature study whose purpose is to investigate how the verbal communication has been practiced and what significance it has had in collisions and groundings. The study is based on reports from the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority with a tool specifically developed for this particular study. The result shows a communication gap in a decisive majority of the analyzed accidents. There is often a lack of communication between VTS and vessels as well as between pilots and commanders. Common prevalence is also language problem where not all parties understand the language used in the communication. With the help of a more widespread practice of already known communication technologies, the number of accidents could be reduced.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis was to outline the legal requirements set by the IMO and EU in order to establish an environmentally sound ship recycling industry. The emphasis has mainly been on the two large parties involved in the industry; the ship owner and the ship recycling facility. The requirements for these two parties are mainly focused on the handling and disposal of hazardous materials found onboard end-of-life ships. With an analysis of these requirements as a starting point, a ship recycling scenario has been analyzed and discussed.

    The result shows that, with today’s technology and knowledge it is possible to establish an environmentally sound ship recycling industry. Though, there are some obstacles along the way, which are of a more administrative nature. Amongst these, the first and most important one is the implementation of the regulations in order to set a worldwide standard for environmentally sound ship recycling.

    The conclusion of this thesis is divided into two parts: one part where the results of the findings is summarized and one part where the different requirements are discussed. The main focus in the discussion is the future for an environmentally sound ship recycling industry and what needs to be done during the existing gap before the legal requirements enter into force. Finally some examples for future research are given. These are mainly questions that were raised during the discussion, but also some of the aspects that were excluded from this thesis.

    Today, maintenance is a big part of the daily life on board ships. It is also one of the bigger expenses a shipping company has and without any loss of quality tries to run as economically advantageous as possible. In the hunt for economical savings the shore-based industry has subsequently applied the use of condition based maintenance, CBM, were a component is maintained according to its actual state. This leads to a reduction of maintenance costs since no parts are unnecessarily replaced. However, within the maritime sector a periodical maintenance is still the most commonly used maintenance system.The purpose of this paper is to chart the factors that are the reason for the low implementation of CBM on board the Swedish merchant fleet's ships. The investigation was carried out according to the qualitative method. Three shipping companies were interviewed, all carrying slow speed, two-stroke crosshead engines.The result from the interviews were evaluated and analyzed and the contributing factors of the low implementation of CBM on board has been identified.The result of this paper shows that the unique conditions on board ships reduces the advantages, normally received in the shore-based industry by using CBM.

    Denna rapport beskriver arbetet med att kontrollera den befintliga ventilationen ombord M/S Calmare Nyckel och även uppgraderingen av fläktsystemet. Rapporten följer arbetet för mätning och dokumentation av befintliga ventilationssystemet och utrymmen. Förutom mätning och dokumentation har ventilationssystemet uppgraderats genom bland annat fläktbyte. Även möjligheterna för att utföra ändamålsenliga ventilationslaborationer, vilka finns inom ramen för Sjöfartshögskolans utbildningsplan har undersökts. De första mätningarna ombord visade på mycket undermålig ventilation i förhållande till gällande ventilationsnormer. Efter uppgraderingen av ventilationssystemet visade mätning att ventilationen var tillräcklig enligt ventilationsnormer. Mätningarna efter uppgraderingen visade också att utförandet av laborationsuppgift är möjliga. Luftkvaliteten visade stor förbättring i och med uppgraderingen, vilket också medför att arbetsmiljön i dessa utrymmen förbättrats för såväl studenter som för Sjöfartshögskolans anställda.

    This work was done to investigate possible solar power installations for Norden Machinery in Kalmar. Focus was to do an economic analysis.

    Contact was made with several solar power suppliers, where two companies gave information about costs for complete installations. Three different installation proposals where decided and the program PVsyst were used to calculate expected power production. Spreadsheets for all three were made with assumed future electricity prices and running costs.

    The result showed that just one of these three proposals generated a profit after a period of 25 years. The amortization period was set to 25 years because that is the same number of years that the solar modules have an efficiency guarantee. The plants can, however, work longer and then the other alternatives also may be interesting. A solar power investment does also provide other values such as a better environmental profile.

    The conclusion was that this may very well be a profitable investment in the long term.

    There are around 2000 hydropower plants in Sweden, but only 10 percent of them has a bio channel, fishway or equivalent solution (Risinger 2012).

    New, more strict rules are now about to be introduced. Since 2014 there is a mutual strategy from the two Swedish authorities ”Energimyndigheten” and ”Havs- och vattenmyndigheten”, which demands multiple actions from Swedish hydropower. (Risinger, 2014). An approved fishway is one of these.The small-scale hydropower plants (plants who produce less than 10 MWh according to Risinger (2012)) are especially affected from this. Their income is proportional to their production and therefore they’ll usually lack the economical ability to build a fishway. Furthermore, a part of the streaming water (which otherwise would equal income) will get lost.

    This study aims to decide the loss of effect a fishway causes. Of course, it is impossible to derive a universal answer. Instead the losses are measured at a specific smaller plant that already has a fishway: Åby hydropower plant that is owned and operated by Växjö municipality. Method being used is traversing in combination with a turbine flow meter. There are already calculated flows made by the municipality. These values will be compared with the measured values.

    The study shows that at a normal water level (165,13 m.a.sl) 167 ± 10 l/s of water is streaming through the fishway. This is a 70 l/s bigger flow in comparison with the municipality’s calculations. An explanation to this difference is given by measurement errors when the depth was measured, that the intake had been modified between when the calculations was being made and when the study’s measurements took place. Also, the formula being used for the calculated values is proposed as a possible source of error. 167 ± 10 l/s will result in a loss of 4,2 ± 0,3 kW potential effect.

    Abstract [en]

    The first of January 2013 came an updated version of MARPOL Annex V. This research has been made with a literature study and interviews with nautical officers searched for answers to what changes have been made, how they are implemented on board and how the changes experienced by seafarers. The purpose of this study was to contribute how the waste handling works onboard, how waste sorting exercise at sea and how the work is perceived. The literature study found that the major difference is that paper, glass, metal and ashes can no longer be thrown in the sea. Food waste inside special areas must have been processed through a food waste disposer before thrown overboard. The interviews showed that respondents are not significantly affected by the changes as they have already followed a more strict version of the regulations for waste disposal. The most important task for the waste responsible officer on board is to inform the rest of the crew on how waste should be managed onboard. All the respondents ask for international legislation directed at ports of a global uniformity in order to facilitate the work that otherwise might be viewed as burdensome and unjustified.

    Idag är vi beroende av de fördelar som kemikalier medför, och under de senaste femtio åren har kemikalieproduktionen ökat mer än 50 gånger. Den kemiska industrin omvandlar råmaterial såsom olja, naturgas, luft, vatten, metaller och mineraler till tusentals olika produkter som används i klädindustri, målarfärg, lampolja, rengöringsmedel, tillsatsmedel i bränsle och mycket annat. Vi måste behandla dessa produkter med försiktighet och respekt för att minimera skadliga effekter på grund av exponering (Kemikalieinspektionen 2013).

     

    Kemikalierna transporteras globalt med lastbil, järnväg och tankfartyg. Transporten till sjöss regleras av internationella regelverk och särskilda certifikat krävs innan fartyg kan lasta farliga ämnen. FN:s sjöfartsorgan IMO arbetar med att minska fartygs miljöpåverkan. IMOs regelverk, gällande kemikalier som transporteras i bulk finns i MARPOL Annex II som bland annat reglerar vilka utsläpp av spolvatten som är tillåtna från lasttankar (IMO 2018).

     

    Syftet med den här studien var att beräkna mängden utsläpp av kemikalier i Östersjön, längs svenska västkusten samt längs Danmarks kust om tankfartygen tömmer sina tankar, i enlighet med gällande regelverk. Utifrån fartygstrafikdata från dessa områden har vi beräknat teoretiska utsläppsmängder. Resultatet visar att fartyg under ett år sammanlagt kan släppa ut en stor mängd kemikalier, i enlighet med rådande regelverk.
