    Naturvetenskapen och skolans dubbla uppdrag

    Skolans övergripande målsättning kan kondenseras till två huvuduppgifter; att förmedla ämneskunskaper samt att fostra självständiga och demokratiska samhällsmedborgare. Lärare har att hantera dessa båda uppgifter, som ibland, åtminstone i Sverige, brukar benämnas ”det dubbla uppdraget” - kunskapsuppdraget och demokratiuppdraget. Att i ämnesundervisningen tillgodose båda delarna i det dubbla uppdraget är inte helt enkelt. Motsättningar uppstår lätt mellan dem, exempelvis genom att demokratiuppdraget upplevs konkurrera utrymmesmässigt med kunskapsuppdraget. Ett uttryck för en sådan dualism är uppdelningen av didaktiken i allmändidaktik och ämnesdidaktik, där demokratiuppdraget kan sägas tillhöra allmändidaktikens fält medan kunskapsuppdraget behandlas inom det ämnesdidaktiska området. Utgångspunkten i föreliggande bidrag är att en sådan uppdelning är olycklig, och att ambitionen istället bör vara att integrera kunskap, lärande och demokrati i den pedagogiska praktiken.

    De meta-teoretiska grunderna för resonemanget utgörs av det sociokulturella perspektivet på lärande i kombination med en deliberativ demokratiuppfattning. Här resoneras teoretiskt kring samtalet som en överbryggande möjlighet för läraren att hantera det dubbla uppdraget (att sörja för såväl naturvetenskaplig ämneskompetens som demokratisk samhällsfostran). Resonemanget handlar om att samtalet dels kan ses som ett demokratiskt mål i sig, dels som en metod för att nå kunskapsmässiga mål inom givet ämnesområde. Exempel från två empiriska undersökningar- en med lärarstudenter, en annan med gymnasielever - presenteras i kortfattad form. Den första undersökningen är en analys av texter som behandlar studenternas ofta negativa erfarenhet av naturvetenskaplig utbildning. I den andra studien utvärderas en samtalsinriktad undervisningssituation med deliberativ och participatorisk ansats. Här används kvalitatativ metod, främst semi-strukturerad intervjuteknik.

    Slutligen diskuteras, med utgångspunkt i de empiriska och teoretiska grunderna, tänkbara implikationer för lärarutbildningen. Förhoppningen är att i någon mån bidra till den nödvändiga och ständigt pågående förnyelsen av densamma.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this contribution is to discuss the significance of a democratic approach in science education. Initially, the concept of "democracy" is outlined. According to the deliberative view, democracy is learnt and practiced in communication with others. Furthermore, according to sociocultural theory, communication also enhances scientific content knowledge. This implies that deliberative discussions could be helpful in carrying out teachers' dual assignment: to transmit knowledge and foster independent, judicious, democratic citizens. The discussion is approached through the presentation of a simulated teaching sequence. Based on this scenario, in which a socioscientific issue is the theme for deliberation, the possibilities and limitations of a deliberative approach in science education is discussed.

    ”The Assignment” as a deliberative approach in ESD

    In ESD, the complexity and inter-relatedness of the world has to be taken into account, including relevant social, cultural and economic perspectives as well as the ecological (science based) aspects. Due to sustainable development’s inherent complexity it might be seen as difficult to provide education within this field.

    Parallels can be drawn between the problems faced by democracy in education and those faced by ESD. For example, it is inevitable that ethical and moral issues must be addressed in ESD as well as in democratisation. This would mean that ESD could offer educational opportunities in democracy as well as in sustainability.

    This contribution presents evaluation of a teaching method (educational tool), focusing on its ability to enable education for sustainable development in a democratic teaching situation with the active participation of all students involved. The method was based on the ideas of deliberative discussions and carried out in a class with students at upper secondary level, studying the core subject of Naturkunskap A [Natural Sciences A]. The topic for the discussions was “The Assignment”, a multi-faceted dilemma concerning sustainable development.

    In the evaluation, three main goals were assessed:

    a) Sustainable development goals

    b) Deliberative democracy goals (creating/stimulating deliberative discussions).

    c) Participatory learning goals

    When it comes to sustainable development goals, it could be seen that the idea of sustainability comes through during the discussions, becoming clearer in the students thoughts as time goes by. The discussion groups often came with reasonable ideas about sustainable development, but the knowledge “backup” behind these ideas seemed to be limited. The method, with deliberative discussion at its core, really engaged the respondents in the study. They felt free to expose their standpoints, and it seems clear that (at least) some of the key features of successful deliberative discussion were fulfilled. Yet, there were no real differences of opinion within the groups, which meant that agreement on a joint solution was (a bit too) easy to achieve.

    The results of the study highlights the potential ESD provides to schools in terms of tackling three goals at once; sustainable development goals, participatory goals and democracy goals.

    Abstract [en]

    In the present study, a laboratory scale gasifier was used to further develop and test a method for characterization of particles from biomass gasification. It was found that when an inlet temperature to the bed of activated carbon, used for tar adsorption, of 200ºC was used, particles with low volatility were produced since they vaporized when heated to 300ºC, indicating condensation of tars. When an inlet temperature of 300ºC was used, the particles were stable when heated to 300ºC. This indicates that the tars had been kept in vapour phase and been adsorbed in the carbon bed. The particles were further heated in steps of 100ºC to 700ºC in order to study the change in particle size distribution and total concentration. The particles were stable up to 400ºC, indicating low tar content. The total particle concentration decreased between 400-700ºC probably due to oxidation of carbonaceous material, for example soot, or volatilisation of alkali chlorides. The particles present after heating to 700ºC were most likely inorganic ash. The concentration of fine particles decreased more than the concentration of coarse particles when heated to 700ºC. This could be due to a higher content of carbonaceous material in the fine particles and more ash-rich coarse particles.

    In the present study, a method was developed for testing of the tar adsorption capacity of a bed of granular activated carbon for the application of sampling particles from biomass gasification at high temperature. A laboratory scale gasifier was used to produce a tar-rich gas and sampling was performed using a dilution probe, diluting the gas with either pure nitrogen or nitrogen containing K2SO4 particles. It was found that when using pure nitrogen for dilution; particles were formed using all tested primary dilution ratios; however the concentration decreased when the primary dilution ratio increased. When using nitrogen containing K2SO4 particles for dilution the particle number and volume size distributions were identical with the reference when higher primary dilution ratios were used while particle formation took place when the primary dilution ratio was lower, indicating incomplete tar adsorption. The conclusion of the study was that the method could be used for testing of the tar adsorption capacity of a bed of granular activated carbon for the application of sampling particles from biomass gasification at high temperature and that it is advantageous to use nitrogen containing K2SO4 particles instead of pure nitrogen for dilution in order to facilitate theevaluation of results.

    In the present study, the particle number and mass size distributions from two measurements on steam and oxygen blown atmospheric bubbling fluidised bed (ABFB) gasification (20 kW) of wood pellets are presented. The total particle number concentration determined using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) varied between 5.1x10^5-6.6x10^6 particles/cm3 (mobility equivalent diameter (dB) 10-670 nm), with the largest variation for particles with dB<100 nm. The particle number size distributions were bimodal with modes at 20-30 nm and at 260-410 nm. The particle mass concentrations determined using a low pressure impactor (LPI) varied between 60-310 mg/m3 for particles with aerodynamic diameter (dae)<5 µm, with modes at 0.2-0.3 µm and at 2-3 µm.

    Physical and Chemical Characterization of Aerosol Particles Formed during the Thermochemical Conversion of Wood Pellets Using a Bubbling Fluidized Bed Gasifier2007In: Energy Fuels, ISSN 0887-0624, Vol. 21, no 6, p. 3660-3667Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Product gas obtained through biomass gasification can be upgraded to hydrogen-rich synthesis gas. The synthesis gas can be further converted to liquid or gaseous fuels. However, the raw product gas contains both gas- and particle-phase impurities that can negatively affect both catalysts and hot-gas filters used for upgrading and cleaning. The present study aimed to characterize, both physically and chemically, aerosol particles formed during the steam- and oxygen-blown biomass gasification of wood pellets in an atmospheric 20 kW bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) gasifier. The product gas from the gasifier was sampled upstream from the cyclone at 500 °C. The particle number size distribution determined using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) was bimodal, with modes at 20–30 and 400 nm, mobility equivalent diameters (dB). The total mean number concentration of particles with dB = 15–670 nm was approximately 7 × 10^5 particles/cm3; however, the concentration of particles with dB < 80 nm fluctuated. The particle mass size distribution determined using a low-pressure impactor (LPI) was bimodal, and the total mass concentration of particles with aerodynamic diameters (dae) < 5 µm was 310 mg/m3. Microscopy analysis of particulate matter on the lower LPI stages, expected to sample particles with dae < 0.4 µm, revealed structures approximately 10 µm in diameter. In addition, the mass concentration of particles with dae < 0.5 µm determined using a LPI was higher than that estimated using a SMPS, possibly because of the bounce-off or re-entrainment of coarser particles from higher LPI stages. Elementary analysis of the particulate matter indicated that it was dominated by carbon. The collected particulate matter was stable when heated in nitrogen to 500 °C, indicating that the carbon was not present as volatile tars but more likely as char or soot. The particulate matter collected on all LPI stages contained a small percentage of ash (noncarbonaceous inorganic material), with calcium as the dominant element.

    Customers' logistics service requirements and logistics strategies in the Swedish sawmill industry2006Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The future of the sawmill industry is uncertain; this is partly due to its internal structural changes, but also due to structural changes amongst their customers. Concurrently, competition within the industry is increasing, and therefore focus is constantly being placed on reducing costs and leveraging economies of scale. However, in order for sawmills to benefit from economies of scale, it is necessary to work with a well thought-out logistics strategy. This doctoral dissertation aims at identifying and describing the customers' logistics service requirements as well as describing and analyzing logistic strategies in the sawmill industry.

    The dissertation identifies and defines some of the sawmills customers' logistics service requirements and establishes a theoretical framework for logistics strategies, as well as it studies logistics strategies in the sawmill industry.

    House-builders and traditional retailers appear to focus on similar logistics service requirements, whereas the logistics service requirement of the DIY multiple retailers differ. Furthermore, this dissertation provides a general definition of logistics strategy that has been operationalized by generic logistics strategies. The sawmill industry makes use of generic logistics strategies such as differentiation and postponement. The individual sawmills ought to consider improving their process performance by implementing additional generic logistics strategies as well as increasing their utilization of generic logistics strategies that are already implemented.

    The sawmill industry's utilization of generic logistics strategies is however restricted by its own supplier market (including uncertainties of quality of incoming material), and also by the inherent nature of commodity products, as well as divergent material flows.

    Föreliggande rapport är den andra av tre avrapporteringar kring erfarenheter av att bygga höga flerbostadshus med trästomme. Forskningsprojektet har sin empiriska bas i Midroc´s bygge av fyra åttavåningars hus för bostadsrätter vid Trummens strand i Växjö.

    Data samlades in under 2007 och analys och diskussion är gjord på detta material. De problem och förbättringsbehov som identifierats hänför sig alltså till det system som användes under 2007 och som i huvudsak kommer att användas för de efterföljande byggnaderna i kvarteret Limnologen. Erfarenheterna som gjorts under byggtiden har lett till att leverantören för kommande byggprojekt vidareutvecklat byggsystemet främst avseende en högre prefabriceringsnivå och ett effektivare och flexiblare system för väderskydd och traverslyft.

    Projektet är en del av insatser från Nationella Träbyggstrategin och Centrum för Byggande och Boende med Trä (CBBT) för att öka kunskapen om modernt stort träbyggande.

    Projektet har finansierats av Nationella Träbyggstrategin, CBBT, Växjö universitet och SP Trätek.

    Evaluation of Aerodynamic Particle Sizer and Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor for Unimodal and Bimodal Mass-Weighted Size Distributions2005In: Aerosol Science and Technology, ISSN 0278-6826, Vol. 39, no 9, p. 871-887Article in journal (Refereed)

    The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of the Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and the Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor (ELPI) to study mass weighted particle size distributions. Unimodal and bimodal liquid test aerosols were produced to a small chamber. Simultaneous measurements were performed with an APS 3320, an APS 3321, an ELPI and a Dekati Low-Pressure Impactor (DLPI) analyzed gravimetrically. ELPI current and mass responses were simulated for lognormal size distributions using a parameterization of the impactor kernel functions. In experiments with a single coarse mode, the mass ratio to the DLPI was between 0.75 and 1.15 for both APS models up to 5 µ m and for the ELPI up to 3 µ m. For larger sizes the ELPI and APS 3320 overestimated and the APS 3321 underestimated the concentration. In experiments with a single fine mode, submicrometer ELPI and DLPI results were in good agreement. However, in contrast to the DLPI all three spectrometers showed a significant mass fraction above 1 µ m. In experiments with a bimodal size distribution, the mass ratios were altered compared to single coarse mode experiments. Simulations showed that uncertainties in ELPI measurements of larger particles occur when concentrations of small particles are high. Several mechanisms that may bias ELPI and APS measurements are described. With knowledge of these, ELPI and APS 3321 can, under many circumstances give accurate time-resolved mass size distributions for particles smaller than 3 and 5 µm, respectively.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to investigate existing manufacturers of wooden framed buildings requirements and interest of building block of flats with bearing wooden frame with more than two floors. With this in view we have studied the market for high wooden houses. We have initially regarded that market from the approach of different interest parties and through investigation of the companies in the market today and to place their systems for building technologies in a life cycle for the product. After that we have regarded the market for wooden framed buildings and focused on the ten companies which we have interviewed. Than we describe how the requirements on the market for high wooden houses are related to results from the interviews. These connections end in an analysis of the factors which influence the choices for the strategy of the companies. We divide the companies in different strategic groups. These groups originate from their experiences of high wooden houses. We describe how the different companies can act at some different scenarios. Factors which influence the existing manufacturers of wooden framed buildings entrance on the market are the state of proprietions, the other activity in the group of companies and the lack of competence of engineering in the projecting. In the scenarios, which we have given details about, do we predict that several of todays existing manufacturers of wooden framed buildings will be on the market in less than five years. This is above all valid for companies which are strong in the activities of projects and companies which are subcontractor of building elements. The companies which are on the market now with a system for building technologies, or are on their way, we believe have a favourable position above all for deliveries to larger or mediumlarge cities.

    Abstract [en]

    For a producing company to stay competitive in the market it is important to implement and maintain an efficient production process from raw material and sales to the delivery of a final product. One way of optimizing the production process is to concentrate on fewer components thereby becoming more skilled in a specific area. One way to achieve this is to reduce the variety of components used. The authors of this paper decided to look closer at the production of elevator jacks at GMV Sweden in Alvesta and how this company would be affected by a reduction of one of their jack models. The analysis and results were divided into two main categories, namely the economical and the organisational aspects of variety reduction. This analysis was split into a quantitative and a qualitative one. The authors achieved direct results in cost savings and indirect results affecting the organisation’s different departments. The results showed that a company can benefit greatly from variety reduction especially in the logistic, quality, and production working areas. The paper is finalised by concluding the results and recommendations for the case company.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to develop a model used to assess costs associated with raw material inventory and to improve the cost effectiveness of inventory management decisions. In response to this purpose a critical literature review of present related theory was performed. Consequently, a model called ‘I SEE’ is developed. The model can be used to identify cost factors within ordering and carrying cost, assess them, analyse the parameters behind anomaly cost elements, generate solutions for improvements based on the anomalies, evaluate them, and select cost effective solutions based on a developed set of criteria called OPTIMAL. Based on general system theory, a case study approach is used to test the suggested model at Alfapac AB, a company specialized within plastic film extrusion. The results are, for example, thorough knowledge of ordering and carrying cost factors, optimized inventory levels and costs, higher inventory turnover, less tied up capital, etc. This research contributes by providing a model that can help the decision maker to identify problem areas and make cost effective inventory decisions.

    Abstract [en]

    The overall target of the maintenance management system is to improve the role of a maintenance organization in positively impacting production capacity, products quality, safety and also overall production cost. In the course of ensuring the above mentioned benefits, the maintenance system should be designed under an umbrella of appropriate strategy that is developed in line with the company’s major business objectives.

    The thesis work is focused on developing a model that assist the design of a maintenance strategy which is linked with the company’s major business objectives. And for this the balanced score card approach is utilized. Then the model’s application is tested in a case company with the general procedures described below.

    The business requirements by the customers, which are translated to business objectives of the case company, were used as starting points. Then the production performance indicators were checked for their effectiveness in addressing the business objectives of the company. After this, a maintenance strategy with approaches to address the business objectives of the company, which are expressed by the production performance indicators, was developed with potential maintenance performance indicators.

    The result showed that the different elements incorporated in the model developed are appropriate in linking the maintenance activities with the company’s business objectives as can be observed from the analysis made on the case company.

    Genetic parameters were estimated for grain angle, growth and exterior quality traits in two 18-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) progeny trials and for grain angle and growth traits in two 12-year-old clonal trials of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.). Mean grain angles ranged 1.4 to 2.0 degrees and 2.1 to 2.6 degrees in the Scots pine and Norway spruce trials, respectively. Heritabilities for grain angle were high in Scots pine (h2>0.40) and moderate in Norway spruce (H2>0.30). The genetic standard deviations were around or slightly below one degree. In general, grain angle was genetically and phenotypically uncorrelated with the growth and exterior quality traits. All traits showed low amount of genotype by environment interaction and there was no tendency of grain angle being a more stable traits than the other traits studied.

     

    A newly developed measurement device for grain angle where the grain angle is revealed by a wedge that is pushed through the bark into the wood and follows the inclination of the tracheids was tested and found suitable for measurements in genetic tests.

    Abstract [en]

    There are several big losses in sawmills that are not addressed by the traditional operation feedback systems. It is strategic significant for organizations to address the question what need to be done in order to bee more effective. This work discusses methods of measurement the effectiveness with respect to maintenance and how the effectiveness can be measured by assessing the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). The work also emphasizes on maintenance strategies and the process of implementing such a policy in sawing mills. During a period of six days assessments of OEE were made in five different sawmills. The results were that OEE in general were about 50 percent, which is considered low. By implementing a cost-effective maintenance policy, it will lead to increase the value of OEE for the process. Using a policy that will decrease the overall costs related to the six big looses could do these. Discussions the production stoppages and how these can be analyzed by using different tools, such as Ishikawa diagram are addressed. The work highlights that a systematic improvement work would increase appreciably the capacity utilized without any large investments. This study also describes how sawmills can be successful when increasing their effectiveness by selecting a cost-effective maintenance policy for their process.

    Utvecklingssamtal, är det ett samtal eller ett betygsreferat? Upplevs utvecklingssamtalen olika av elever och lärare? Syftet med min studie var att ta reda på hur elever och lärare upplever sina utvecklingssamtal. Genom att använda kvalitativ intervjuform gavs jag då möjligheten att försöka förstå både elevernas och lärarnas syn på utvecklingssamtal. Av studien framgår att många av de intervjuade eleverna ansåg att de ville ha fler men kortare utvecklingssamtal. Eleverna och lärarna delade synpunkten att en bra relation är grunden för ett utvecklande utvecklingssamtal och att utvecklingssamtalet inte bara är ett betygsreferat. I resultatet framgår också att flertalet av de intervjuade eleverna och lärarna ansåg också att det är viktigt att ta upp de sociala relationerna. Men även trivseln i skolan skapar en god skolmiljö. Eleverna ansåg att lärarna var viktiga vuxna som kan jämföras med deras föräldrar.

    Både elever och lärare ansåg att utvecklingssamtal är ett planerat samtal som skall hållas ostört och enskilt, där högt och lågt kan diskuteras.

        Detta skapar enligt lärarna en chans till en bra relation till eleven men också till elevens föräldrar/vårdnadshavare.     The compressive strength perpendicular to grain of cross laminated timber (CLT) was studied experimentally. The problem was also theoretically analyzed and a finite element model was created and solved using a commercial finite element software package. The experiments were carried out with three layer CLT specimens of dimensions 200x200x120 mm and 300x300x120 mm. In some of the experiments a contact free deformation measurement system was used to analyze the strain field during loading. Different ways to apply the load were used: over the whole surface of the specimens and by a 50 mm wide steel bar. The position of the steel bar in relation to the specimen edge and its orientation relative the surface grain direction was varied. It was found that the compression strength of the cross laminated timber depended on the way in which the load was applied. The compression strength perpendicular to grain was found vary from 2.9 N/mm2 for specimens loaded by a line load at the edge of the specimen and parallel to the surface grain direction to 5.8 N/mm2 for specimens loaded by a line load at the specimen centre and perpendicular to the surface fiber direction.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this thesis is to develop a model that represents the dynamics of a hydraulically operated forestry crane. The model was derived with the traditional Euler-Lagrange formalism and considers the crane mechanics, three double-acting hydraulic cylinders and the valve control unit. On the basis of the derived model we reproduced the entire crane model in MATLAB in order to run simulations herewith. This gave us the possibility to do parameter changes for further studies of the crane in motion.

    Another major goal within the thesis work was to estimate cylinder friction of the hydraulic actuators. We built up a test rig and used double-acting cylinders for determing their frictional behaviour. For this, we ran open-loop experiments in order to create velocity-friction maps that represented the static friction force of the cylinders. In this concern, we varied system pressure and cylinder load to study their influence on the friction force. By means of the derived static friction maps we approached the cylinder’s dynamic friction behaviour and applied both step and ramp control inputs to examine the spring-damping characteristics of the microspoic bristles in the contacting area. The dynamic friction experiments have been exerted in the fashion of the LuGre model. As a result we acquired different nominal friction parameters that we necessarily used to develope adequate friction models.

    A third objective of this thesis was to establish a crane-tip control. Instead of a traditional control, providing a direct relationship between joystick input and cylinder extension, the focus was to build up a control for the end-effector’s trajectory in a two-dimensional frame. This could be achieved by using inverse kinematics in order to determine the required joint angles that corresponded to the desired position of the crane-tip.

    The work also contains a CD including all developed MATLAB models that have been written within this project.

    The aim with this project was to learn and understand the possibilities and the difficulties with glass as a material. It also was a great challenge to realize my basic idea as well as trying to get the producers to understand the vision I had and to mediate my form of expression. A personal goal was to feel satisfied with my own performance and at the same time to get as much knowledge from the working professionals as was possible. Another important point of view was to not only focus on the end result but also to reflect on the different steps in the advance of the product which was done by questions, tests and a great deal of will. For this project I choosed to combine the art of glass with the more functional design of objects, in this case a table. My aim was to find new ways to give a practical thing a new appearance with the material of glass. During the project I learned both in practical and theoretical ways about different techniques such as blowing, cast glass, colouring, combinations, composition, blasting, difficulties and possibilities with the glass. At my stay at Strömbergshyttan I also took the chance to blow my “Goldengreen” , which I felt was suitable with the style and design of the table. This project has given me a lot of experiences and I look at the future as a designer with strength and confidence in my personal expression.

    Abstract [en]

    Procurement of sawlogs to purchasing sawmills represents a basic strategic business process. The properties of inbound sawlogs are decisive for the output of sawn products and the cost of raw material contributes substantially to the cost of the final product. Increasing customer orientation and new demands from powerful customers in the building and retail sectors entail new or accentuated demands on management of procurement. Managing raw material procurement and communicating needs to suppliers and logging machine operators are vital issues for sawmills in order to be competitive.

    The purpose of the thesis is to explore how purchasing sawmills manage procurement of sawlogs. The results are based on 46 in-depth interviews with people involved in the procurement process at seven softwood sawmills in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. The thesis identifies various types of supply uncertainties as well as process improvement and buffer activities that reduce uncertainties. However, the major obstacle in the procurement process is the power/dependence balance in the relationships with suppliers. Beyond doubt, it restricts the manageability of procurement and particularly bucking. The results suggest that there are a number of ways to improve management of procurement, which are currently not fully employed. The thesis provides four key strategic dimensions of the procurement process and suggests a general conceptual model of wood procurement to purchasing sawmills.

    Further research within the subject can usefully explore the link between procurement management and procurement strategy as well as the relation to other functions' strategies and the corporate strategy. The importance of the identified strategic dimensions of the procurement process needs to be quantified in order to provide normative suggestions.

    Industriprogrammet är ett av gymnasieskolans nationella program. Undervisningen bedrivs både på skolan och under elevernas arbetsplatsförlagda utbildning (APU), som de genomför under 15 veckor under den treåriga utbildningen. Teori och praktik varvas så att eleverna kan få sina teoretiska kunskaper tillämpade praktiskt under sin praktik ute hos företagen. Studien som vi gjort inriktar sig på kursen Arbetsmiljö och säkerhet (ARL 1201).

    Vi har intervjuat två lärare som har undervisat i den här kursen (ARL 1201), fem elever i årskurs tre, som genomgått utbildningen, och fem företag som har haft eleverna under deras arbetsplatsförlagda utbildning.

    Med den här studien har vi försökt få en insikt i hur företag samt lärare och elever inom Industriprogrammet, på de två orter som undersökningen genomförts, upplever utbildningen inom kursen Arbetsmiljö och säkerhet (ARL 1201). Kursen fortgår under elevernas treåriga utbildning på Industriprogrammet, och är en 50 poängs kurs.

    Företagen tycker att elevernas kunskaper är goda och relevanta, men efterlyser truck och traversutbildning medan några elever efterlyser upprepade hjärt- och lungräddnings övningar, och upplever att de inte fått den information om säkerhetsregler som ska gälla under deras arbetsplatsförlagda utbildning. Lärarna tycker att kursen ger eleverna en bra grund för det fortsatta livslånga lärandet

    Syftet med vårt examensarbete är att försöka hitta möjligheter till att förbättra och förnya specifikt kvarteret Romalyckan på Teleborg i Växjö. Vi har tittat på möjligheter för nybyggnation i kvarteret, ombyggnation med syfte att energieffektivisera bostadshusen, ökad trivsel och säkerhet runt parkeringsområdet samt påbyggnad av en extra våning i ett av bostadshusen. Flerbostadshusen på Romalyckan är byggda under miljonprogramåren och därför har vi valt att koncentrera oss på denna typ av flerbostadshus, som är byggda med två till fyra våningar och saknar hiss. Vi har skapat en övergripande och generell mall som skall kunna användas på liknande bostadsområden av fastighetsförvaltare runt om i landet. Mallen ska vara användbar för att kunna dra rätt slutsats angående ett hus påbyggnadsmöjligheter med en eller flera extra våningar. Vi har lagt fram förslag på möjliga förändringar i kvarteret. Vi tror att vi har kommit fram till en användbar mall och med hjälp av denna har vi konstaterat att påbyggnadsmöjligheterna i vårt undersökta hus på Romalyckan är goda.

    The materials we have around us can affect our health. Natural textile fibres have characteristics which synthetics try to copy, without success. In the report studies of wools characteristics and the textiles used in care environment are made. Previous research show that usage of wool give positive result in care connections, still it´s seldom used. There are many prejudices about natural materials, which often seems to be too complicated. Premature babies are choosen for the case study. They need assistance keeping warmth to gain weight and develop. The result of the study in the report is a woolly twist, to put tight round the infant, which provides warmth and makes care environment in incubators softer and safer.

    This diploma work has been done on commission by SP Maskiner AB and affects the length meter unit on the single-grip harvester SP451LF. The pulse encoder in the present length meter has too short duration why a sensor-bearing will be tested as replacement.

    The tasks are to find a suitable sensor-bearing unit, to dimension a complete measuring wheel bearing and create a construction proposal for a prototype of a length meter.

    The diploma work is limited by the fact that the reworked length meter has to fit into the SP451LF harvester. That means that the length meter’s contact points on the harvester’s frame are not to be altered.

    Abstract [en]

    This dissertation examines how engine noise inside the cab of a forwarder can be reduced with simple measures. It has been conducted in collaboration with Rottne Industri AB, a Swedish manufacturer of logging machinery. Tests have been performed on Rottne Industri AB:s forwarder SOLID F9-6. We have found that most of the noise originates from the frame and that isolation from airborne noise is less effective at a low level of revolution. At a higher level of revolution airborne noise is dominant and can be reduced with isolation. The cooling fan, the engine cylinders and the hydraulic system were identified as dominating sources of noise. To reduce the airborne noise inside the cab, areas in the roof area, by the cable entrance under the cab and by one of the ventilation holes were isolated. This isolation reduced the level of noise inside the cab with 1,4 dB. Another way of reducing noise inside the cab is to increase the motor idling from 800 rpm to 930 rpm. By doing so the noise is reduced by 1,1 dB. In the report we propose fields that are relevant for further investigation in order to reduce noise even more. The most important source of noise to correct is the cooling fan.

    I slutet av 2003 påbörjades undersökningen Tidsanvändningsstudien, vilken ingår som en del i det pågående arbetsmiljöarbetet vid Växjö universitet. Undersökningen syftar till att få mer kunskap om hur arbetsförhållandena vid universitetet ser ut och ska i sin tur på lång sikt förbättra arbetsvillkoren för de anställda. I första hand är projektet inriktat mot arbetsvillkor kopplade till arbetstid, arbetsuppgifter och arbetssituation där anställdas åsikter och synpunkter ska komma fram.

    Ett stort antal arbetsplatser genomgår idag förändringar och det finns betydande risker för negativ stress och ohälsa i samband med dessa omställningar. Universitet har under de senaste tio åren blivit en alltmer betydelsefull del av samhället och samtidigt ett föremål för ett större politiskt intresse och inflytande, vilket har fått som följd att de idag också är utsatta för dessa samhälleliga krav på förändring. Universiteten som arbetsplats består, enligt tidigare undersökningar, av personal som ofta är mycket nöjda med sina arbetstider, arbetsuppgifter och sin arbetssituation, trots detta har många anställda arbetsrelaterade besvär och antalet sjukskrivningar är höga. Vår uppgift var att studera arbetsmiljön vid Växjö universitet.

    Undersökningen riktar sig till samtliga anställda vid Växjö universitet och för att kunna ta del av allas uppfattningar av arbetsmiljön valdes enkätundersökning som insamlingsmetod. I rapporten redovisas oftast vad samtliga anställda anser om arbetsmiljön, men eftersom universitetet är en stor arbetsplats förekommer det variationer beroende på kön, yrkestillhörighet och vilken institution/sektion/enhet personen tillhör.

    I rapporten har personalens åsikter och uppfattningar om Växjö universitet som arbetsplats sammanställts och därefter analyserats utifrån faktorer som påverkar deras arbetsmiljö. Det som framkommit är att en stor del av personalen är nöjda med arbetstiden, arbetsuppgifterna och arbetssituationen. De flesta känner att de har frihet att själva planera i stor utsträckning vilka tider de ska arbeta. De har en variation i arbetsuppgifterna som medför att arbetet känns omväxlande och arbetsmiljön beskrivs som stimulerande och god. Samtidigt beskriver anställda en arbetsmiljö som bland annat består av; stor och ojämn arbetsbörda, tidsbrist, dåligt samvete och arbetet upplevs som splittrat och stressigt.

    Utifrån personalens uppfattningar om arbetstid, arbetsuppgifter och arbetssituation hittade vi gemensamma drag som kan sammanfatta arbetsmiljön vid Växjö universitet. Arbetsmiljön kännetecknas av frihet och flexibilitet, hög arbetsbelastning och hög lojalitet. Slutsatsen är att hög lojalitet och fria och flexibla arbetsvillkor gällande arbetstiden och arbetsuppgifter i kombination med hög arbetsbelastning gör att individen upplever:

    - oro att inte hinna med alla arbetsuppgifter på ordinarie arbetstid

    - oro att inte leva upp till ställda arbetskrav

    - att arbetet ger dåligt samvete eftersom det alltid finns arbetsuppgifter att utföra

    - att det inte finns någon ersättare vid sjukdom

    - negativ stress och ohälsa

    För anställda resulterar detta ofta i långa arbetsveckor med övertid och hem- och helgarbete för att hinna utföra arbetsuppgifterna samt hög sjuknärvaro på arbetsplatsen.

    En skolmatsal består av många olika problematiska delar som ska kordineras till en god helhet. En viktig del i denna helhet är möblerna. Böjträtekniken medför oftast väldigt hållbara och tåliga möbler, därför skulle dessa möbler passa utmärkt i matsalen. Målet med projektet var att undersöka sittandet i skolmatsalen på våra högstadieskolor och därefter formge någon form av sittmöbel, anpassad till denna miljö utifrån Gemla Fabrikers teknik att böja bok.

    Syftet var att möbeln ska vara en del av en helhet för att skapa en bättre miljö i våra skolors matsalar och att formge en ny sittmöbel till Gemla fabrikers AB.

    Detta resulterade i en liten stol som inte tar mycket plats, tillverkad i ett starkt material och metod, böjd bok. Med en läderklädd sits som är tålig mot slitage och som åldras fint. Ett formspråk som kan kopplas till Gemla men som ändå har något yngre och kaxigare över sig som kan passa målgruppen, högstadieelever

    Abstract [en]

    It´s reasonable to assume that every company that´s involved in production wants to assure and control their incoming raw material quality for improving their own production. One way of doing this is to control the incoming raw material, but with this thesis also take one step further through focusing on the source, the supplier. The empirical data for this thesis was collected through interviews, observations, surveys, and through existing documentation from the case company. This combined with the different litterature studied during the authors education in Växjö University is the basis for our research. To be able to conduct this degree thesis towards the case company the authors have focused on two different important aspects. The first aspect is purchasing, how is the purchase process structured at the present time in the present time at the case company? the second aspect is quality, how is quaility assured at the present time in the case company. From these two aspects the authors have made a model of how to assure and control the raw material quality. By conducting this research we hope that the case company will get new ideas of how to identify and improve their current situation and performance regarding controling and assuring the raw material quality, we also hope that the our suggested model will be applied and that this model will help and inspire other companies to do the same in the future.

    Abstract [en]

    This diplomawork is a study of the making of hydraulic cylinders at CA-Verken, a Swedish company located in Sävsjö. The last two years has showed a substantial increase of the company’s turnover. The only remaining obstacle of an ongoing expansion is the limited capacity of the company’s production.

    The purpose of this diplomawork is, for that particular reason, to study CA-Verkens production flow in order to identify the bottleneck-issues and ultimately be able to suggest possible solutions and improvements concerning the production process.

    The theoretic foundation of this study is based on the Theory of Constraints (TOC). Interviews, company business systems and observations have been used as important sources during the collection of data. By analysing the production flow concerning the cylinders, which represents the greatest deal of the company’s turnover, the assembly was identified as a bottleneck-issue.

    In order to optimize the torrent of production it’s necessary for the company to increase the efficiency of the assembly and eliminate different disturbances as well as all unnecessary wastefulness in the process.

    Uppgiften som beställdes av Abstracta gick ut på att omkonstruera ett rackskåp i produktserien Enjoy. En hissanordning avsedd för att höja och sänka samt dölja en Platt-TV skall utvecklas till detta skåp. Slutprodukten skall användas i konferensmiljö där man är i behov av digital bildvisning. Skåp och hisslösning skall inge en viss känsla av stil och elegans då dessa ofta används i kontakt med eventuella kunder. Då skåpet härstammar ur produktserien Enjoy, vilken har en viss form och stil, måste även den nya lösningen uttrycka samma känsla. Några av kraven som ställs för att uppnå denna känsla är bland annat att TV-hissen skall arbeta med en jämn och behaglig hastighet samt att luckan för upphissningen skall öppnas på ett kontrollerat och stilfullt vis. Hissanordningen skall även vara säker och pålitlig samt ha en tyst arbetsgång.

    Abstract [en]

    Most companies today are working in a global environment where competition is hard. In order to be able to survive it is essential that the companies utilise their resources as much as possible in order to keep the production cost low. Maintenance plays a crucial role because of its impact on availability, reliability, quality and life cycle cost (LCC). However, being able to use maintenance proactively so as to increase the utilisation of the production process resources requires access to proper tools and methods for deciding on what maintenance to use and to follow up maintenance impact.

    Consequently, the overall research problem discussed in the thesis is: How to select a maintenance policy and follow up its performance with respect to cost-effectiveness in order to improve company profitability. In order to solve this overall research problem it has been broken down into four research questions R1: How can different approaches intended for maintaining or improving production process performance assist in the identification, analysis, elimination and prevention of recurrence of problems in a production process?, R2: How should maintenance be selected on the basis of cost-effectiveness?, R3: How should the technical and financial performance of maintenance be measured in order to enable cost-effective improvements? and R4: How to access relevant data required for cost-effective decisions in maintenance?.

    The philosophical basis applied in the work presented in this thesis is systems theory. When looking at maintenance, it is necessary to have a wide perspective and also see the interaction between maintenance and other relevant working areas.

    The major contributions that have been achieved and reported in the thesis are: 1. A literature review regarding current approach abilities to identify, analyse and prevent the recurrence of problems, 2. The development of a conceptual model for measuring the maintenance impact through a set of key performance indicators indicating where and how much to invest in maintenance., 3. The development of a maintenance support system for measuring the economic/financial impact of maintenance on both operative and strategic levels, 4. The development of a model for selecting and improving maintenance policies based on cost-effectiveness. The model presented is characterised by being flexible, in the meaning that it is possible to make a selection among any types of maintenance policies., 5. The definition and description of a common database containing relevant data for maintenance management and 6. Results from an exploratory study regarding IT maturity within maintenance management in Swedish industry are presented.

    The main conclusion of the thesis is that the tools and methods described in this thesis can represent important elements in a system to continuously and cost-effectively improve maintenance performance and thereby better utilise the resources in the production process.

    The positive effects of maintenance on product quality, machine, ability to deliver the expected production on time and on production costs are well accepted in the scientific community. Never the less, a survey made in Swedish industry indicates that the positive contribution of maintenance is in general still not recognised or fully understood. Maintenance is still to a great extent seen as an unnecessary cost. To make it possible to recognise the impact of maintenance on the production process, a simple to use and reliable system for assessing its impact is required. This system should assist in distinguishing effects from actions taken in different working areas such as maintenance and logistics to enhance process performance. In this article a simple and transparent system for monitoring the performance of a production process in financial terms with respect to maintenance effect is presented. This system is based on a model describing how performance of the production can be related to vibration-based maintenance. The main result presented in this paper is a simple, transparent and user-friendly system for monitoring and assessing the performance of the production process with respect to maintenance. The main conclusion is that using this system makes the hard task of monitoring maintenance impact on the production process easier and faster and thereby also easier follow up the cost-effectiveness of investment in maintenance.

    For long maintenance has been treated as a separate working area, isolated from other areas such as production and quality. However, the awareness of maintenance importance and complex nature has increased. To be able to take full advantage of maintenance, systems that assist in the task of planning and follow up on a continuous improvement basis are required. This paper describes the use of maintenance practices and how IT is used for maintenance management by using data from a survey about maintenance management in Swedish industry. The paper finds out that maintenance activities connected to the Plan and Check phases of the PDCA-cycle are emphasised to a low extent while the Do phase is more emphasised and that companies tend to intentionally select CMMS functionality that supports the Plan phase of the PDCA-cycle, if they put high emphasise on these kind of activities.

    Maintenance impact on companies' business is well established. It should no longer be considered as a cost-centre; instead it should be treated as a profit-generating centre, since its close relation to companies' internal efficiency. Cost-effective decisions in maintenance require a system for monitoring and assessing the performance of maintenance and its impact on company's profitability. In this article we present a database model, which will be the foundation of a decision support system for monitoring and assessing production process profitability and competitiveness. The database model was developed based on two case studies made at two different companies and later successfully tested.

    Abstract [en]

    The main objective of this investigation is to determine the effect of different physical and chemical parameters on the performance of biofilters, treating hydrophobic organic compounds. pinene was used as a model substance. Alpha-pinene is commonly found in wood, and therefore found at wood storage facilities and wood processing industries [1].

    In this experiment two biofilter which were in equal size, were used. Both of them were filled with perlite for treating the alpha pinene contaminated air. One of the columns contained perlite partially coated with silicone oil to make the surface of perlite more hydrophobic. The filters were run at 5, 2.5 and 1.5 l min-1 air flow rate. The results showed that the silicone oil amended filter performed better at 2.5 l/min with a maximum removal rate of 20 g / (m3 h) in comparison with 15 g/ (m3 h) for the filter without oil. The efficiency was approximately the same for both filters at 1.5 and 5 l/min (40 compare to 35 g/m3 bed h). The flow rate was then set to 2.5 l/min once more. The results showed that the removal rate had increased to approximately 35 g/ (m3 h) and that the efficiency of both filters was approximately the same. The difference in results between the initial run and the later at 2.5 l/min is probably depending on that the microorganisms had become adapted to the α-pinene and that the microorganism communities developed differently in the two filters.

    Abstract [en]

    The assignment given to us by NCC was to compose a degree project based on ground excavations for power cables. The aim of the study was to examine suitable excavation methods depending on different possible terrain conditions. The amount of previously written material within this subject is nearly non- existent and therefore there is a genuine interest by the NCC to receive a compilation of different production methods. The greater part of this study is based upon interviews with several companies active within this area of expertise. The technique of placing the electricity grid beneath ground for safety is today getting more and more common. The aftermath of the hurricane “Gudrun” has forced several power companies to re-evaluate their electric supply network, which has lead to more placements of power cables underground.

    We have come to the conclusion that there are several factors that would affect the method of choice for cable excavations. Costumer demands, obstacles and the difference in ground conditions are vital factors behind the verdict for suitable production methods.
