    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study is to investigate what difference a shared leadership can make in an organization. We also wanted to know how social work professionals describe shared leadership and how its changes and consequences work out in an organization. To be able to answer the purpose of this study, we decided to do a case study. The interviews are conducted in an social work organization. We have conducted a focus group interview with three employees, an interview with each of the two area managers having a shared leadership, an interview with the social manager, an interview with the operations manager and one with a politician. In this study we used both an abductive and a qualitative approach by doing six interviews. The conclusion of our study is that the implement of a shared leadership have many advantages for the organization-from the employees at the bottom to the politician at the top. The results show that it is not an easy task to perform a shared leadership. It takes two willingly people and a lot of characteristics to do it. We have learned that this type of leadership is not for all managers. Some managers want to run the show on their own.

Resisting social death with dignity. The strategy of re-escaping among young asylum-seekers in the Wake of Sweden's sharpened asylum laws2020Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines experiences of 'social death', and the strategy of 're-escaping', following sharpened Swedish asylum laws and practice. The arguments stem from ethnographic research with people who arrived in Sweden as 'unaccompanied minors' between 2014 and 2016. The participants have experienced step-by-step rejection processes from both the Migration Agency and social services, resulting in homelessness, pennilessness and a dependency on civil society goodwill. Some research participants remain in Sweden while others have re-escaped searching for asylum elsewhere in Europe. It is argued that the treatment from the Swedish Migration Agency and the social services has contributed to situating these young asylum-seekers in a position of 'social death', a condition lacking hope and opportunities for agency where they are not treated as fully human or grievable. The aim is to analyse their experiences of social and legal ostracism in Sweden and the act of 're-escaping' to other countries as a strategy not only to gain asylum, but also belongingness, self-control and dignity. While such handling of oppression may boost dignity and self-control, it may also lead to prolonged insecurity where individuals risk becoming permanent refugees stuck in precariousness within European borders.

Immigrant mafia or local lads on the binge?: The construction of (un)trustworthiness in Swedish district courts2017Ingår i: Retfærd. Nordisk Juridisk Tidsskrift, ISSN 0105-1121, Vol. 157, nr 3-4, s. 182-200Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we address the constructionof familiarity and distance in Swedish district courtcases, involving young men with both immigrantand Swedish backgrounds. Through ethnographicobservations of 40 trials related to street crimes, wehave found different qualities of social interaction that distinguish immigrant background and Swed-ish background cases from each other. These distinc-tions, disfavouring young men with immigrant back-ground, are built up through a series of practices and events that follow taken-for-granted behaviourand details in interaction, such as speech, laughter, choice of words to describe the accused and trust inSwedish witnesses. In conclusion, we argue for thenecessity of detailed, close-up studies of courtroom action and interaction to understand statistical find-ings of discrimination and disfavouring of certain groups of immigrants in court and elsewhere in thejudicial process.

Internet racism, journalism and the principle of public access: Ethical challenges for qualitative research into ‘media attractive’ court cases2016Ingår i: Ethnic and Racial Studies, ISSN 0141-9870, E-ISSN 1466-4356, Vol. 39, nr 11, s. 1943-1961Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the risk of research exposing people with an immigrant background in criminal court cases to Internet-based racist persecution, due to mismanagement of general ethical guidelines. The principle of informed consent, ideally serving to protect people under study from harm may, in fact, cause them more harm due to the interest among certain Internet-based networks of spreading identifiable, degrading information. Arguments are based on ethically challenging experiences from two ethnographic research projects carried out in Swedish district court environments, focused on immigrant court cases. Ethical advice provided by ethical review boards and established research guidelines, were based on an unawareness of the potentially destructive rendezvous in media attractive immigrant court cases between ‘ethically informed’ research, crime journalism, freedom of information legislation and ‘Internet vigilantes’ on a quest to persecute court participants and their families in the global digital arena.

    Noise, voice and silencing during immigrant court-case performances in Swedish district courts2017Ingår i: Ethnicities, ISSN 1468-7968, E-ISSN 1741-2706, Vol. 17, nr 5, s. 667-687Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that court-ritual unawareness, linguistic shortcomings andstereotypical images about non-Swedish otherness impair the position and actingspace for immigrants in a Swedish district court context. Drawing on two ethnographicallyinformed research projects focused on courtroom interaction during morethan 20 trials dealing with ‘domestic violence’ and ‘street-related crime’, we claimthat immigrant voices are often silenced due to taken-for-granted practices in court.Through analyses of interviews, performances, interpreted hearings and references toa desirable Swedishness, it is argued that situations are created where immigrantparticipants may experience their possibility of being understood as limited and theirvoices as being unheard. Such conditions are emotionally draining and may result inparticipants choosing silence over stating their case. This is a problem, not only withinthe individual court case, but also for the overall legitimacy of the court system and forissues of institutional trust among citizens.

    Abstract [en]

There has been a high influx of unaccompanied refugee children who have come to Sweden, the number increased particularly in 2015 compared with previous years. It is the municipalities, and therefor the social services, responsibility to provide adequate care for this children. The purpose of the study is to gain an understanding of the social services work and opportunities to meet the needs of unaccompanied children in accordance with the child's best, in relation to the convention on the rights of the child. The study is based on a qualitative approach and the method is semi-structured interviews with three managers in the field and three social workers. According to the results, social services has faced a challenge in meeting the needs of unaccompanied children in both a lack of resources such as accommodations and lack of social workers. The results also show that there are some difficulties to consider the child's best in the work with the unaccompanied children, partly to the lack of resources wich inhibits the ability to meet the child's wishes and because of differences of opinion about what is best for the child. The organisation has faced a change in order to cope with the large influx of unaccompanied children and therefore organization theory is used in the analysis. Theoretical concepts that is used in the study is discretion and street level bureaucracy due the social workers is street level bureaucracies whose work with unaccompanied children is affected by their discretion given by the organization.

    Abstract [en]

It is said that leadership success can be measured by the well-being of employees therefore we believe it becomes relevant to research the employee’s preferences concerning which skills they believe; a good enough leadership should entail. However previous leadership research tends to focus on the opinions of the middle managers rather than the employees themselves. Therefor the following study will conduct semi-structured individual and thematic group-interviews to depict the ideas of both middle managers and employees within five different municipal care-organizations. Throughout the study an employee-perspective have been added to further investigate the most desired leadership skills vis-à-vis the actual leadership that occurs within municipal care operations to highlight differences and similarities. The following study can conclude that having a relationship between employees and middle managers is something that is important and something that everyone thinks is a prerequisite. The study can also draw conclusions surrounding the most preferred leadership skills. Employees need to feel involved and that the middle manager is understanding and insightful regarding the different roles and opinions of the employees. The studies theoretical theory, symbolic interactionism and Goffman's dramaturgy became helpful tools in order to analyze and understand how relationships are expressed and how communication can be interpreted. Furthermore, middle managers and employees agreed that it is difficult for middle managers to work with an employee-perspective in municipal care, since all performers have different perspectives and priorities, which means that they might have different opinions about which leadership qualities they consider to be most important. A leadership with an employee-perspective can be compromised by the fact that middle managers have many areas of responsibilities. Municipal care operations are an ever-growing workplace and a last home for many people which also can affect a middle managers ability to possess an employee-perspective.

'I Got to Know Myself Better, My Failings and Faults': Young People's Understandings of being Assessed in Secure Accommodation2017Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research, ISSN 1103-3088, E-ISSN 1741-3222, Vol. 25, nr 2, s. 124-140Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores young people's understandings of assessments conducted in secure accommodation. The concepts of institutional identity' and text-mediated' actions have been used in the analysis. The main empirical material is repeated interviews with assessed young people during a two-year period. In the findings, the stories of three young people display understandings of appreciation, disappointment and self-development. The assessments seem to have made the youths aware of their failings and faults'. An analysis of the written assessments found institutional identities of inner problems and unstructured everyday lives'. In conclusion, the young people's understandings of the meanings and implications of the assessments are suggested to be connected to the caseworkers' text-mediated actions and their position in the assessment process. The young people's stories indicate the need to consider the institutional context of the assessments and to acknowledge young people's efforts in care.

Young people in limbo: perceptions of self-presentations when being assessed in secure accommodation2015Ingår i: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 22-37Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, young people are assessed in institutions at the request of the social services, a situation that can be described as being in limbo, in a state of uncertainty. Using the concepts of self-presentation and institutional processes in total institutions, this research aims to analyse young people’s perceptions of being assessed in secure accommodation. The empirical material consists of repeated interviews with 16 adolescents assessed in secure accommodation. Three situations were identified in which the young people felt that their self-presentations were in some way in or out of their control: the placement situation; the assessment situation and the assessment-outcome situation. The youths perceived their self-presentations to be influenced by the setting (i.e., the institution). In addition, there were two parts to being in limbo: being on site in the institution and being distant from the social services. The young people’s experience of being assessed in an institution was characterized by feelings of a loss of control over self-presentation and of their perceptions of themselves.

    Abstract [sv]

Searching for the right track: managing care trajectories in child welfare2017Ingår i: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 22, nr 1, s. 398-408Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines caseworkers' efforts to plan and find appropriate interventions for troublesome young people. Strauss's concept oftrajectory is applied to analyse how Swedish caseworkers shape and manage the evolving care trajectories using assessments for young people in secure accommodation, i.e. institutional youth assessments. The empirical material consists of surveys to 82 caseworkers concerning 85 institutional youth assessments and interviews with 16 of these caseworkers. The findings reveal ongoing care trajectories that are out of control where the assessments are seen as an opportunity of change for the youths. Diagnoses, confirmations and plans for action are provided through the assessments and used by the caseworkers in negotiations for resources. Three orientations of contributions to the caseworkers' management of care trajectories were found, all reflecting the many uncertainties of child welfare work:child centredprofessional and discharge of liability. In conclusion, the caseworkers searched for the right measures to manage change and achieve youth compliance, but it was also a matter of managing professional and organizational contingencies and passing on responsibility.

Kontrollerade unga: Tvångspraktiker på institution2018Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe and analyze how the municipality's elderly care, primary care and volunteer organizations work and cooperate with each other and elderly caretaker regarding mental illness, with the purpose to pay attention to, manage and prevent mental illness for the elderly.

In order to achieve the purpose of this study a qualitative research was used. The empirical material was collected through four qualitative interviews, which were held with two volunteer organizations and one doctor and one nurse from the primary care. Two vignette studies

were held with elderly-care workers. One study conducted in a small municipality and the other in a bigger municipality, both in Kalmar county.  The study results were analyzed using the following theories: stigma and social exclusion, the power of diagnosis, social psychiatric field and cooperation. The results of this study show that the municipality and county council do work and cooperate to prevent and address mental illness among the elderly. However, there may be a better and more interaction with psychiatry in order to further and more effective manage the problems. Those who were interviewed feel that through continuity, motivation and collaboration they work to prevent and detect mental illness, but that competence is not always enough when it comes to how mental illness shall be managed when it emerges.

Our conclusion is that by addressing the question of resources at national level and increase available resources to actors dealing with the mental health of elderly people, better cooperation can be created, leading to improved care for the elderly.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis sheds some light on the duality between time-rich and time-poor living conditions and examines in which way this duality/polarisation paves the way for new patterns of inequality. The purpose is to explore the living conditions of two groups in society: those who are established in the labour force and who experience great demands on their efficiency and educational level and those who are unwanted and who do not have a natural place in the labour market.

Theoretically, time geography shows a diversity of time patterns and time space restrictions between different life forms in everyday life. The conclusion contradicts the understanding of time as a monolithic concept. The results show how working time standards are essential to understand the access to time and economic resources that time-rich and time-poor life forms have. This is something that not only poses questions about household strategies and individual needs, but also shifts the perspective to social positions and demands of society.

In a process analysis of Swedish working time policies I investigate how structural policy change, from a social discourse closely related to Swedish welfare reforms, is moving towards an economic discourse motivated by financial arguments. By doing so, the political measures for solving working time related problems in today’s flexible working life appear to be contradictory. On the one hand we find time-poor people in the labour market mainly supported by tax reductions and private time saving solutions while on the other we find time-rich people mainly supported by activation programmes and/or welfare benefits. It is thus a working time regime and policy strategy that obviously disregards these two sides of the coin.

The European Union is a relatively new actor and powerful force on the working time agenda. The European Commissions’ policy solution is Flexicurity. A policy analysis shows that flexicurity has a life course perspective where social arguments have a central position in terms of security in a flexible working life. In comparison, Sweden is moving in the opposite direction by leaving social arguments behind. Conclusions show that the economization of time creates vulnerabilities and tensions between time-rich and time-poor living conditions. In looking at time as a welfare factor, traditional ways of solving old problems are being challenged by a policy that can open up for new kinds of welfare solutions that value work and life time patterns both inside and outside the labour market.

Social security in pockets of local order  2013Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has been presented as one of the archetypes of a welfare state with a high level of universal ambitions (Esping-Andersen 1990). At the same time, the development points out a decentralization of issues concerning social security in order to rein flexible labour markets. In two studies, we are investigating how this development is motivated in policy documents presented by the state and what effects the decentralisation has on a local level. Firstly, the aim of the policy case is to develop an understanding why the municipalities take greater responsibility for the labour market policies. Results shows that this change has been motivated by the state by claiming that the municipals are more flexible toward local labour markets and needs among the unemployed. Secondly, the aim is to understand this policy solution and its impacts on a local level. In an interview case, we study social workers in three different municipals. We investigate their ways of treating young unemployed that does not accept the demands from the social services. The social worker and the young unemployed contribute to the construction of the pocket of local order (Hägerstrand 1985; Ellegård & Vilhelmson 2004). A social order with explicit power relations, expectations and rules. This relation is linked to resources and restrictions that influence the possibilities to achieve goals in certain projects in everyday life. Results shows, as the policy case was indicated, local variations between the municipals in handling social security to young unemployed.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Time-rich and time-poor living conditions: Balancing time and income in everyday life2010Ingår i: Proceedings of the Sustaining  Everyday Life Conference: April 22–24 2009, Campus Norrköping, Sweden / [ed] Kristina Karlsson & Kajsa Ellegård, Linköping University Electronic Press, 2010, Vol. 38, nr 28, s. 171-182Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on the division of work and private life in a Swedish community. An interview study sheds some light on the diversity of time frames experienced by people living inside and outside the labour market. It examines in which way this duality is paving the way for new patterns of inequality. The purpose is to explore the living conditions of two groups in society: the time-poor who are established in the labour force that experience great demands on their efficiency and educational level and the time-rich who do not have a natural place in the labour market. People experience an unbalanced division of time and resources not only in work situations but also in everyday life in the home and in leisure time. The time-rich can experience having small margins partly due to a lack of social networks and social recognition, while the time-poor experience it due to multiple and unwieldy social roles in and outside labour market. Society has tried to cope with these two different problems in completely different ways, although both problems are related to income, one through salaried work and the other through income support. The results do not only exhibit the polarizing tendencies in terms of time and income. There are also similar differences concerning social participation. Time-rich people have a hard time finding alternative social networks outside the labour market. At the same time, many life course changes that require both a lot of time and a lot of money occur in time-poor living conditions. A restriction analyses, inspired by the time geographical approach, shows a diversity of time patterns and timespace restrictions between different life forms in everyday life. When the individuals’ whole life situation is taken into consideration, the diversity of time patterns creates restrictions that oppose strategies for work/life balance in everyday life.

Working time policy change and new social risks2013Ingår i: Changing social risks and social policy responces in the nordic welfare states / [ed] Ivan Harslöf, Rickard Ulmestig, Palgrave Macmillan, 2013, s. 75-91Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Problems of reconciling work and family life are highlighted as one of the new social risk factors that accompany the transition towards a post-industrial society (Bonoli 2007; see also Chapter 3 of this volume). Perrons has observed that work intensification, as well as job insecurity, creates tensions that may undermine family life (Perrons et al. 2005). According to Leisering and Leibfried (1999), dual-breadwinner families in particular are facing such problems. Even in Sweden, a Nordic welfare state characterized by a high proportion of dual-breadwinner families, a policy framework that would protect dual-breadwinner families from the time constraints imposed by a demanding working life has so far only been enacted to a limited extent (Furåker et al. 2007). This chapter shows that problems of work-family life balance are indeed present in the Nordic countries — and asks why the protection of employees, and in effect, families, through the regulation of working time, has ceased to be on the political agenda. The question is addressed by conducting a case study of working time regulations across different periods in Swedish modern history.

    Abstract [en]

Society uses different resources such as voluntary initiatives, family dependents, public care, and private geriatric care, in order to ensure that the elderly can stay in their homes and still maintain a good life. We go towards a risk society with a bigger individual responsibility. The goal with our study is to describe the expectations put on the future of geriatric care that the elderly between 65-80 years have. The questions that we have been working with are: what do the elderly in third stage of life outside the care think about how care is going to be organized in the future? What trust do these elderly have towards today’s society? What factors influence the trust of these elderly towards the future? We have analyzed our empiric based on theories about trust and the elderly life perspectives. The factors that we chose to look at based on their life-circle is how the social network, accommodate, worthwhile activities, economy and education influence their trust. We have done that through interviewing seven pensioners between 65-80 years, some are newly pensioned, others have been granted pension sins a number years, and one has been receiving disability pension. We have been using a qualitative method with open interview questions. We have also been using a semi structured interview guide, which we divided in supervisor themes with different part questions. The result of our study has shown that certain factors in the respondents’ lives could have importance for their thoughts about the future. What clearly was proven in our study was that all informants had distrust in the society's ability to cope with its obligation, when it comes to care and care in the future. Most of the respondents believe that they in larger extent have to ensure to get the help that they need themselves in the future. Our result has also shown that the social networks are that factor in respondents’ lives that has had major importance for their welfare and the experienced health. Since every respondent pointed out the important of having a worthwhile life and the feeling of being healthy, the voluntary work can be according to our result a good way for elderly to feel needed.

    Abstract [en]

Studies show that 10-15 percent of Sweden's population, 65 years or older are estimated to have depression or depression symptoms. The symptoms of depression among elderly people are less than symptoms of young people. This could cause that elderly people with depression are not always discovered. Studies show that elderly people who live in residential homes show more signs of depression than elderly people living at home. If elderly people live in a supporting environment, can it prevent that a depression developed.

The prevention of depression among elderly people is a topic that is not discussed among previously research. The purpose of this study is to examine how the unit managers of the residential homes for elderly people look at the prevention of depression. This study is qualitative where six unit managers in charge of residential homes have been interviewed. The interviews were based on different themes; how the unit managers approach the prevention of depression among elderly people and how they describe the discretion to take preventive treatment for depression among elderly people, also the unit manager views on elderly peoples depression. The study is made in a small number of municipalities which means that it can not be generalized. The result may not be the same if the study had been made on a larger scale.

The results of the study show that the unit managers of the residential homes for elderly people work to prevent depression in different ways. An explanation of why the unit managers works different are based on the unit manager ideas and interpretations of depression among elderly people. Also the unit manager priorities, past experience, number of years as a professional and their views about elderly people’s depression are factors that affect the unit manager work. The unit manager views on its way to approach the prevention of depression, the political guidelines and decisions have impact on the way the unit manager work to prevent depression among elderly people in the residential home.

The purpose of the study is to gain an understanding of professionals view on manualbased treatment programs in pratice. In addition, we also want to highlight their approaches to the manualbased treatment programs in their work. The study is based on eight qualitative interviews with professionals working in the Swedish Probation Service. In this study we used three theoretical frameworks in order to analyze the result. The theories we used were profession, organization professionalism and occupational professionalism, and tacit knowledge as we supplemented with the concept naiva theory. The result showed that the manualbased treatment programs were designed in different ways. It became clear that the different manualbased treatment programs influenced the professioneals view on the advantages and disadvantages that they could identify in working with these programs. Furthermore, it also became clear that their use of different strategies also was influenced by the design of the programs.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden has an obligation to report child abuse suspicions to Social Services. According to Socialtjänstlagen (swedish constitution) 1 § Chapter 14, all employees in agencies affecting children, such as schools, have a responsibility to report their suspicions. Research shows that many abuses are not reported. The consequence of this is that Social Services does not hear about all cases of abused and harmed children. One profession where reporting is mandated is school counselors. The school counselor has a particular status in the educational community and meets many maltreated children, and children who injure themselves through their own behavior. The purpose of our study was to describe the circumstances that school counselors believe may affect their tendency to report. Using qualitative methods, we had eight interviews with school counselors from different municipalities who work with students of different ages, and who have different experiences within their profession. The result was related to the theoretical frames of the written composition by Stephen Webb’s (2006), The Rationality of Regulation and the Sociological Concepts of Formal and Informal Social Controls (Israel, 1968). Our study shows that all school counselors knew that a report had to be submitted even at the slightest suspicion, although several of them said that they in some cases avoided to report. The reasons for this, which all according to our interpretation means that the regulation and the social control of maltreated children does not always work, could have to do with the cooperation and response from the social services, or that they assumed that the involvement with the social services would not benefit the child. It could also be that the student’s situation was not serious enough to report, or that they wanted more information about the situation before reporting. Another reason could be that they assumed that there are better ways to sort out the students’ concerns within the school or other agencies, especially if it regards an older student. The study also shows that the school counselors felt there was a risk in losing the students trust when reporting their suspicions.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the structured and evidence-based assessment tool/method The Brief Child and Family Phone Interview (BCFPI) trough a social psychology perspective of conversation. The aim was especially to seek an understanding of the method considering aspects of children’s participation. The research question was: how do the method users apprehend the advantages and the limitations of the BCFPI method considering aspects of children’s participation. The study was carried out trough a qualitative analyze and sex respondents in two child psychiatry clinics in Sweden were interviewed. A symbolic interactionistic perspective were used to analyze the results. The results showed that it was mostly advantages that were discussed and only a few limitations were presented. No reflections about children’s participation were expressed. Together the results and analyze contributed to an understanding of the BCFPI method as a restricted method considering social psychology perspectives and perspectives of children’s participations. One interpretation of the results showed that much focus was on the effectiveness of the method. In the future it could therefor be significant to reflect upon social psychology aspects as well as aspects of children’s participation regarding the BCFPI method.

"It's Not All About Money": Toward a More Comprehensive Understanding of Financial Abuse in the Context of VAW2017Ingår i: Journal of Interpersonal Violence, ISSN 0886-2605, E-ISSN 1552-6518Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Men's violence against women (VAW) is multifaceted and complex. Besides physical, psychological, and sexual violence, women subjected to VAW often suffer from economic hardship and financial abuse. Financial abuse involves different tactics used to exercise power and gain control over partners. Experiences of financial abuse make it difficult for women to leave an abusive partner and become self-sufficient. From an intersectional perspective, applying the concept of the continuum of violence, the aim of this article is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of how women subjected to men's violence in intimate relationships experience the complexity of financial abuse in their lives, in the context of VAW. Based on 19 in-depth interviews with women surviving domestic violence, the study describes how intertwined women's experiences of financial abuse are with other forms of abuse, influencing each other, simultaneously experienced as a distinct form of abuse with severe and longstanding consequences. Women in the study describe how men's abuse affects them financially, causing poverty and affecting their ability to have a reasonable economic standard. Financial abuse also causes women ill health, and damages their self-esteem and ability to work, associate, and engage in social life. The interviewed women describe how experiences of financial abuse continue across time, from their past into their present situation and molding beliefs about the future. According to the interviews, financial abuse in private life sometimes continues into the public sphere, reproduced by social workers mimicking patterns of ex-partners' abuse. Bringing out a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamic continuum of financial abuse, our results deepen knowledge about the complexity of VAW in women's lives, and thereby are important in processes of making victims of violence survivors of violence.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on interviews with four managers in public elderly care and four managers in private elderly care. The aim of this paper is to examine how these managers are experiencing their leadership in relation to conflict management, and if the managers leadership differs depending on private or public elderly care. Leadership and conflict management are theories that have been used in order to analyze the empirical findings. Previous research that has been used in the study concerns “leadership/leadership styles”, “conflict management”, “to be active in the private/public elderly care”. Social workers often choose to work as a manager in private and public elderly care. The work as a manager is demanding with pressure from several/different parties and the manager faces new challenges. Conflicts are one challenge that mangers faces, and conflicts can be a sensitive topic. The study deals with the complexity that managers in the private and public elderly care faces, mainly based on the leadership role in conflict management. The results show that the interviewees leadership in this study, for the most part can be linked to the situational leadership style, which means that managers believe that leadership adapts to any situation that arises. They also experienced that the private elderly care has higher demands and that there is a bigger responsibility on the individual manger than it is in the public elderly care. There are many different support functions in the public elderly care that managers have the opportunity to take help from daily, that opportunity does not exist in private elderly care.

    Abstract [en]

Social work involves working intimately with clients who are or have previously found themselves in difficult life situations. The intimate work with clients is one of the reasons why the social work is considered emotionally demanding. The aim of the study is to highlight how social workers are influenced by clients emotions, as well as increase the understanding of how social workers can manage the emotional strain that an intimate work with clients can cause. Based on a qualitative research effort and qualitative interviews with seven social workers from “individual and family welfare” in the southeast of Sweden. When analysing the empirical data, three main themes emerged: the emotional work of social workers, management of emotions during the interaction with clients and strategies for managing emotional strain. Goffman´s theory of dramaturgy as well as Lazarus and Folkman´s theory of coping strategies are used to create an understanding of the research problem. Results of the study show that collegial support was deemed to be a common strategy as well as the most significant for managing emotional strain.
