    Abstract [en]

This bachelor´s thesis analyzes the video game Red Dead Redemption and the historical use of the environment and atmosphere in the game. The theory and method used is media research and social memory studies. Two questions were asked: how does Red Dead Redemeption convey and produce the historical environment and the historical atmosphere. Furthermore subqueries/criterias were used to help answer the main questions.

The analysis was divided into two parts, the first part we analyze and discuss the games historical environment and the second part analyzes and discusses the historical atmosphere of the game.

The conclusion is that both the historical environment and the historical atmosphere is present in the game through picture and sound, the text only works as a guide. The picture and sound live in a symbiotic relationship and depend on each other to fully immerse the player to the game. The social memory is also highly present due to it being inspired by movies such as The good the bad and the ugly and For a fistful of dollars.

    Abstract [en]

This study is an analysis of how people from the former Yugoslavia saw their homeland. The aim is to investigate exiled Yugoslavs’ view of their homeland. The paper will also examine how Yugoslavia contributes to nostalgia. Additionally examine various groups’ of people view of Yugoslavia and the civil war. The source material used in this paper is mainly interviews. The interviewed persons are exiled Yugoslavs who were born between the years 1946-1960. Secondary source material is from literature. First hand literature used to examine Yugoslavia are: New Perspectives on Yugoslavia: Key issues and controversies edited by Dejan Djokic and James Ker-Lindsay, Balkan history: Yugoslavia rise and fall written by Sanimir Resic, Tito: Folkets diktator written by Björn Kumm. Method used in this paper is oral history. Through oral history, exiled Yugoslavs will tell how they experienced the former Yugoslavia. The survey showed that most exile Yugoslavs highlighted how good society, and their lives were back then in Yugoslavia. In addition, the study came to the conclusion that Yugoslavia contributes to nostalgia among exile Yugoslavians. Most of them travel back to their home country during their holidays to recharge both mentally and physically.

"Filmreformens förste avantgardist": Experimentfilmaren Peter Kylberg2017Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is about the Swedish filmmaker, painter and composer Peter Kylberg (1938–). The study examines how Swedish film-cultural and film-political actors interacted with Kylberg in his ambition to create a particular type of expression in the film medium. Thus, not only Kylberg stands in focus, but also the surrounding film-cultural and film-political climate that Kylberg related to. Kylberg’s nine productions produced between the years 1959 and 1996 serves as a historical delimitation. The approach of the dissertation is essentially chronological, as it enables a presentation of Kylberg’s artistry as an emerging development process. The bulk of the source material which constitutes the basis of the study comprises unprocessed primary sources from public and private archives as well as articles and reviews from the daily press and trade press.

A purpose of the study, with Kylberg as a point of departure, is to critically review the existing historical writing surrounding Swedish film culture and film politics, during the years Kylberg was active. The dissertation is also a study of the type of expression that Kylberg tried to convey, as well as a discussion of what can be said to construe Kylberg’s concept of art. The study revolves around two problem areas which can be summarized in the words position and expression. These areas deal with Kylberg’s prerequisites as an artist and his aesthetics respectively. Kylberg’s experimental films were generally state funded and produced by major film companies for commercial exhibition. They were thus included into a film culture which essentially encompassed narrative films in feature-length format. An argument that carries through the study is that positioning Kylberg as a filmmaker is problematic. A classic romanticized definition of the avant-gardist experimental filmmaker, arguing for a clear polarization between autonomous avant-garde film and commercial industry, does not fit Kylberg. In the study, he is therefore categorized as a within-industry experimental filmmaker sandwiched between the two seemingly separated spheres “minor” and “major cinemas” – a conceptual apparatus mainly developed by film scholar David E. James.

Kylberg was seen by several contemporary critics as a “traditional” modernist. The dissertation fixes on this track and argues for a reading of Kylberg as a belated modernist. Kylberg’s artistic activity is discussed as an extension – or reflection – of various modernistic approaches and perspectives, which linked several of the experimental films and synthesized art’s pioneers in the 1910s and 1920s. Furthermore, Kylberg’s films have striking similarities to a number of the trends, genres and approaches that several experimental film researchers have identified as characteristic of experimental films, mainly European and American, in the 1900s – such as city symphonies, trance films, exile films, diary films, structural films and expanded cinema. The comparison between Kylberg’s work and expressions in earlier and contemporary experimental films make it possible to see his artistry in the light of an international experimental film context.

Furthermore, the study wishes to demonstrate that the basic conditions for Kylberg’s position, can be derived from a number of cultural-political reforms which took shape during the beginning of the 1960s. Emphasized in the dissertation is the dependency relationship between Kylberg and a number of cultural-political actors, which were crucial in allowing Kylberg to place minority expressions within the framework of such a resource-dependent art form as the studio-produced nationally and internationally, marketed and theatrically screened film. The dissertation studies the film artist’s role in the Swedish welfare state and problematizes the avant-garde concept in this specific context. The study argues that Kylberg’s production conditions were directly related to a Social Democratic overall culture policy goal to promote the production of what the representatives of the implemented policy called “cultural benefits”. In 1966 a film critic identified Kylberg as “The first avant-gardist of the film reform” – a categorization that tells us something decisive about Kylberg’s social role as a film artist. If he were an avant-gardist he was neither his own, nor his artistic medium’s avant-gardist, but the cultural policy reform’s. Throughout the study, Kylberg functions as an indicator of which of the institutions of the Swedish welfare state were at the time able to finance, or not finance, the kind of experimental expression he wished to create. It can be said that the acceptance of these institutions gave Kylberg an artistically legitimate, as well as economically possible, front-runner position as one of the welfare state’s sanctioned avant-gardists.

    Abstract [en]

We can conclude that there are differences between the curriculum of primary and secondary school from year 1994 and 2011, current concepts of historical consciousness, gender and equality between men and women. Our paper describes the differences among the four curriculums focusing on the subject history. In our paper we have used an document analysis and our theory is based on curriculum theory. The result that we have presented demonstrate the development of the historical consciousness, it is more developed and divided which makes it more simplified to understand. The gender and equality perspective have various differences, but for the most part the equality perspective are well presented in the curriculum, and more developed in the 2011 curriculum. The curriculum from 1994 have similarities with the curriculum from year 2011 but the word gender is only presented once in the new curriculum for the secondary school from 2011. The result of this paper is that we found the gender concept relatively new, but the perspective is produced in the curriculums through other words like sexuality, female and male.

Kön, lön och karriär: Sjuksköterskeyrkets omvandling under 1900-talet2004Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In a Swedish context this thesis deals with male integration in the profession of nursing during the last 50 years of the twentieth century.

I focus on four different topics.

At first the pioneer era is discussed, that is in the beginning of the 50s, when men were allowed to enter the nursing profession and become nurses. Here I discuss on the Swedish Society of Nursings (Svensk Sjuksköterskeförening, SSF)) standpoint on the matter of men’s ability to participate in a sphere so closely connected with professional values as well as feminine values of caring and support.

The second topic deals with the question of using the concept ‘sjuksköterska’ (nurse), in Sweden a feminine marked word, as a title for both men and women. The result of a long and keen debate is that a lot of imaginative titles were refused and that still today both women and men use the female title ‘sjuksköterska’. This might be one reason for men not seeking the profession of nursing.

In the third place I look at the pecuniary result for nurses especially after 1986 when a new individual oriented wage determination was launched. The local investigation comprises four different clinics at the University hospital in Malmö (Universitetssjukhuset Malmö allmänna sjukshus, UMAS) and takes a special interest in earnings between male and female nurses. In countries with long experience of individual wage systems male nurses usually earn more than their female counterparts. The question I ask is if the same tendency is about to happen in Sweden.

Finally, the possibilities of making a career in the profession of nursing is analyzed. The local investigation stresses that female nurses seem to prefer an administrative career in an increasing extent than men do. Male nurses, on the other hand, made union careers in the 70s and 80s and especially the post as ombudsman is popular. In the mid 90s the male appointment to union position is growing weaker probably connected to an increasing feminine consciousness among female nurses. Also the professionalisation process of the nurse corps is shortly examined.

Savu: History and Oral Tradition on an Island of Indonesia2018Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The work combines anththropological fieldwork and archival research in order to study the historical trajectories of Savu, an island in the Indonesian province Nusa Tenggara Timur. Savunese society is marked by a tight genealogically defined social system which has been able to allocate scarce natural resources. The island, traditionally divided into five domains or princedoms, was included in the political network of the Dutch VOC in the 1640s. The Savunese had importance for the Dutch as providers of auxiliaries, and later as exporters of horses, textiles, etc. The book follows the vicissitudes of Savu over the colonial period, Japanese occupation, revolution, and the postcolonial era.

    Abstract [en]

During the 19th and 20th century, Sweden saw a dramatic increase of illegitimate children. The phenomenon was not however equally distributed, as the frequency was much lower in the western parts of the country. In several doctoral thesis, the development has been explained with the advancing industrialization of the modern society. The primary aim of this study has been to test this thesis in Västbo district 1860-1939. The district, which is located in the heart of the south western parts of Sweden, had around the turn of the century 1900, several more or less industrialized towns, but was still strongly influenced by the surrounding agrarian parishes. As expected, the parishes with an established industry, tended to have a higher proportion of illegitimate births than those of agrarian character. Therefore, the same thesis that has been accepted on a national scale, can also be applied on a local scale, even within the region that represents a low proportion of illegitimate births. The study has also proven that the majority of the illegitimate children’s fathers were unknown, which often put the mother in a difficult economic and social situation. On the other hand, a bigger proportion of the fathers were identified from 1926, when each municipality was obliged to institute a child welfare committee. The main material of the study has been the birth books and the child welfare committees’ protocols.

Häxor i periferin: Trolldomsprocesser i Småland 1604-1619.2006Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

    Häxor i periferin. Trolldomsprocesser i Småland 1604-1619.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the educational value of time travel role-play organized by Kalmar läns museum and how the method relates to the current curriculum Lgr11. This is done by examining the method using Gagné´s events of instruction and applying two theories represented by Vygotskij and Dewey. The material analyzed consists of two interviews in which respondents are familiar with the educational tool´s structure and the manuals written by Ebbe Westergren, first curator at the museum. The results show that depending on how the role-play is designed, it has the potential to serve as a teaching tool in history. This for its varied teaching technique and of it extent the method complies with Gagné´s nine points. In the final section of the analysis shows that the time travel role-play as a teaching method is compliant with the elements of Lgr11. Due to the amount of time that the method requires in order to reach its full potential, there is a debate on whether the time travel role-play takes much time away from other crucial content in the curriculum.

    Abstract [en]

Within the educational system you will experience students from different cultures, thus the question was asked: what are the expectations on you as a teacher when working with the students’ process of a positive identity view? The essay has examined how elementary school and the sami school work with identity in school and in history class. The investigation has been executed through Critical Doscourse Analysis (CDA) on the source material Syllabi and course plan for history subject for elementary school and sami school fråm 1994 and 2011, and syllabus for sami school from 1996. The results presented reveals a change in how the words identity and the sami people are assoicated with and how these concepts should be treated in the syllabi and the cours plans for history from 1994 and 2011. In the syllabi and course plan in history from 1994 identity is strongly associated with culture and cultural heritage and the sami perspective should be included as a part of the swedish and nordic perspective. The sami school has provided the teachers with a guidance in the history subject including how to teach in order to mediate a sami perspective. In the syllabus and course plan for history from 2011, the sami perspective is exkluded and instead the sami people are placed in a context of learning about “the others”. Identity is no longer strongly associated with culture in this syllabus, but instead the focus is directed towards language and historical narratives connected with identity development.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus?: A comparative study of Karl Marx, Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou’s reflections on revolution2015Studentarbete övrigt, 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative thesis analyses the development of Marxian thought on riots and revolution in the works of Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou. Due to the structural limitations of this essay, the research has been limited to a comparison between Karl Marx’s The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte and a selection of Žižek and Badiou’s works. Furthermore, the scope of the essay focuses on two material events; the coup d’état of Louis Bonaparte and the England riots of 2011. The comparison was concretised through the usage of Ludvig Beckman’s model for idea analysis and the method of ideal types. This study demonstrated how the modern theorists remain loyal to Marx’s basic analysis of society and concepts such as alienation and exploitation. However, the deterministic and eschatological aspects of Marx’s philosophy have been abandoned for a less ineluctable history, and resonate more towards the Hegelian notion of an open history. This study has also elucidated and cemented the vital importance of the material circumstances in a historical materialist study; moreover, it has revealed the necessity for the modern theorists to reinvent and radicalise a number of Marx’s original concepts for the modern world. Žižek and Badiou also contest Marx’s insistence on the requisite nature of violent revolution, and promote the politics of subtraction as an alternative.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine and compare four objects of Chinese art that derive from two different dynasties; the Han dynasty and the Tang dynasty. The goal is to reach an understanding of what the art in China conveyed, and how Hellenistic and religious influences affected the Chinese art during the two dynasties. Thereafter a comparing will be made between the arts of the Han and the Tang periods, to deduce what the differences were between them. This study also aims to take part in the debate of whether the Chinese art really were adapting foreign styles and concepts or not.

The issue this study aims to solve are divided between three questions: What did the four artworks convey during the dynasties of the Han and Tang? In what ways were the artworks influenced by Buddhism and Hellenism during the two dynasties? What differences and similarities exists between the artworks of the Han dynasty and the Tang dynasty? To answer these questions, this study uses literature about the arts of China from two authors.

The conclusion of this study show that the four artworks were all influenced by Hellenistic and Buddhist elements, and they had both their differences and similarities. The attributes of Hellenism gave birth to the realism of sculptures, and the attributes of Buddhism in the beginning of its spread into China were slowly being adapted into Chinese society by the ordinary people.

    Abstract [en]

MBD, DAMP, ADD and ADHD are all concepts that through history have been used as labels to explain people with concentration difficulties. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate how the school's view on pupils with concentration difficulties has changed over the years. In addition, it shows how the school's view of pupils with concentration difficulties has affected both the teaching, the role of the teachers and the students. In the 1950s, the concept of MBD was used. In the 1990s, the term DAMP was used and today children with concentration problems are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. In this essay I follow how perceptions of these difficulties has changed in line with the concept differences.

    Abstract and summary

    The glocal province of competence.

The regional building up of knowledge at Växjö University and its choice of home region.

The aim of the study is to give views on knowledge and to describe and discuss which home region Växjö University has chosen as its context. Taking my point of departure in the literature and in examples, I illustrate, discuss and examine how three different disciplines at the university have chosen their home regions. The disciplines are history, economics and biology. The study covers the last 33 years.

The empirical study, with its focus only on regional matters, is based on four sources. 1. Research and researchers 2. Education and the impact it has as shown by the papers written by students at bachelor and master levels. In all 459 papers have been classified 3. Interviews with the professors 4. The University’s annual report given by the board of directors.

The study centres on the diverse and complex characteristics of regions which leads to a variation of regions used by different actors at the university. One aspect is the consideration of the relationship between formal and everyday knowledge.

The three disciplines have different attitudes towards home region and towards how it is constituted. Generally speaking, historians see the home region more as territory with the emphasis on the southern part of the province of Småland. The economists concentrate on home region as a functional arena, even though examples and studies sometimes are found in Småland. The biologists, who are in a new discipline at the university, sometimes study the southern part of Sweden, but focus on general aspects. All three of them are interested in interdisciplinary methods and studies in order to build up knowledge connected to the home region. The board of directors has not chosen one specific region and varies its attitudes over the years.

The interviews gave a broad perspective on knowledge and regions and with views on a local and global world. A glocal region.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine whether the descriptions of Stalin's terror in history textbooks for high school changed from the 1950s until the 2010s. Since previous research shows that textbook content is influenced from different directions and that it dominates in teaching, therefore I want to find out what similarities and differences that exist in the textbooks. The survey is based on a qualitative approach because I want to have a profound picture of the descriptions of Stalin's terror. The results of the survey show that the number of casualties and the descriptions on the famine has changed over time. Furthermore, textbooks also found it difficult to distinguish between terror, politics and ideology. The analysis of the results linked to the theoretical bases, historical consciousness model and history didactic model. The analysis shows that the result always ends up in historical consciousness as the basis for reproducing change and continuity, but in some cases the result has also been connected with historical consciousness of identity formation. In the history didactic model, the result has fallen into the material history teaching subcategories, objective, purpose and classically purpose.

Civilizing Pirates: Nineteenth Century British Ideas about Piracy, Race and Civilization in the Malay Archipelago2018Ingår i: HumaNetten, E-ISSN 1403-2279, nr 41, s. 25-45Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates how British officials and observers of the Malay Archipelago in the nineteenth century explained the prevalence of piracy in the region, particularly in terms of race and civilization. The writings by, among others, Thomas Stamford Raffles, John Crawfurd, James Brooke and Peter Benson Maxwell on contemporary Malay piracy are analysed. Whereas there was broad agreement among these observers that the alleged lack of civilization on the part of the Malays was a major reason for the prevalence of piracy in the region, there was considerable disagreement about the Malays’ capacity for civilizational progress and improvement. The degree to which the Malays were deemed capable of civilization in turn influenced the policies and measures implemented by the British to suppress piracy, ranging from the promotion of free trade to the wholesale extermination of entire villages and communities of suspected pirates. Criticism from humanitarians and liberals in London against the brutality of the latter tactics, however, led to a more restrained British deployment of violence in the Malay Archipelago from the middle of the nineteenth century.

Fredens och barmhärtighetens budbärare? [The harbingers of peace and mercy?]: Hugh Lenox Scott och den amerikanska arméns relationer med Oklahomas indianer under 1890-talet [Hugh Lenox Scott and US Army−Indian relations in Oklahoma in the 1890s]2019Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift (S), ISSN 0345-469X, Vol. 139, nr 3, s. 455-481Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Three tense events involving the US Army and the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache nations in Oklahoma in the decades after the end of the Great Plains Wars seemed destined to end in violence: The Ghost Dance in 1890−91, the death of three Kiowa boys in a blizzard in 1891 and the transfer of Geronimo and around three hundred Chiricahua Apache Indians to Oklahoma in 1895. In all of these events a US Cavalry officer, Hugh Lenox Scott, played a key role as a soldier-diplomat. Through his linguistic skills and inter-cultural competence, Scott, assisted by Iseeo, a Kiowa army scout and close friend of Scott’s, managed to prevent the three situations from erupting in violence. These outcomes are in stark contrast to what happened around the same time in the Northern Plains, where violence erupted on several occasions, most conspicuously at Wounded Knee in December 1890, when US troops killed between 150 and 200 Lakota Indians. The purpose of this micro historical study is to highlight how the military, in concrete action, could promote peace and development in their dealings with American Indians and to explore the significance of personal relations, tolerance and trust for the maintenance of peace. These factors were crucial for the more peaceful development on the Southern Plains compared with in the north. In promoting peace, moreover, Scott not only acted as a diplomat in relation to the Indians; he also successfully advised his superior commanders not to send troops into the field in order to uphold order and quell any possible unrest. Such deployment of troops, Scott was convinced, was like putting a keg of gunpowder in front of an open fire and risked sparking uncontrolled and lethal violence between the soldiers and the Indians, to the detriment of the latter, as happened at Wounded Knee. Based on his long service as a soldier-diplomat, Scott later in life developed a general theory about the military as a peacemaking institution. According to Scott, it was politicians and the people who made war and the task of the military was to conquer the peace. His styling of the US soldier as the ”harbinger of peace and mercy”, however, depended on Scott ignoring the many instances when the US military had failed to maintain peace and order, both in relation to the American Indians and in colonies overseas.

Pirates and pearls: Jikiri and the challenge to maritime security and American sovereignty in the Sulu Archipelago, 1907–19092017Ingår i: International Journal of Maritime History, ISSN 0843-8714, E-ISSN 2052-7756, Vol. 29, nr 1, s. 44-67Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In 1908–1909, maritime commerce, fishing and traffic in the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines almost came to a standstill due to a surge in piracy and coastal raids that challenged US colonial rule in the area. The leader of the outlaws was a renegade subject of the Sultan of Sulu, a Samal named Jikiri. Together with his followers, Jikiri was responsible for the murders of at least 40 people in numerous raids on small trading vessels, pearl fishers, coastal settlements and towns throughout the archipelago. In spite of the concerted efforts of the US Army, the Philippine Constabulary and private bounty hunters, Jikiri was able to avoid defeat for more than one and half years, before he was eventually killed in July 1909. His decision to take to piracy was triggered by the failure of the US authorities to pay compensation for the loss of the traditional claims that many families in the Sulu Archipelago had to the pearl beds of the region, as stipulated by a law on pearl fishing adopted in 1904. The law was in several respects disadvantageous to the native population of Sulu and this – together with the high-handed behaviour of the local officers in charge of the Sulu district from 1906 – fuelled widespread discontent with colonial rule and led several of the leading headmen of Sulu covertly to sympathize with, and protect, Jikiri and his followers. This sponsorship combined with the general reluctance of the population to cooperate with the US military explains why Jikiri was able to defy the vastly superior US forces for so long. American officers at the time tended to attribute the depredations to the allegedly piratical nature of the Sulus, but this article argues that the so-called 'decay theory', first proposed by Raffles a century earlier, is a more appropriate explanation of this surge in piracy.

Pirates of Empire: Colonisation and Maritime Violence in Southeast Asia2019Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The suppression of piracy and other forms of maritime violence was a keystone in the colonisation of Southeast Asia. Focusing on what was seen in the nineteenth century as the three most pirate-infested areas in the region - the Sulu Sea, the Strait of Malacca and Indochina - this comparative study in colonial history explores how piracy was defined, contested and used to resist or justify colonial expansion, particularly during the most intense phase of imperial expansion in Southeast Asia from c.1850 to c.1920. In doing so, it demonstrates that piratical activity continued to occur in many parts of Southeast Asia well beyond the mid-nineteenth century, when most existing studies of piracy in the region end their period of investigation. It also points to the changes over time in how piracy was conceptualised and dealt with by each of the major colonial powers in the region - Britain, France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United States.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Doctors, academically educated and authorized, assert that there is more to being a real doctor than having fulfilled the formal criteria. It has been said that there is a particular doctor's ethos, which is based not only on thorough medical education but also on traditional know-how, internalized ethics and good character. This paper contains several studies of the efforts of Swedish physicians to define themselves as doctors, individually and collectively, during the period 1890-1960 and to identify the ethos of their profession. The empirical material consists mainly of texts written by doctors for doctors on different social and political questions pertaining to the profession's interests. Studying the identities, interests and ideals that have been expressed by Swedish doctors in society and on the professional and individual level made it possible to distinguish and describe different aspects of their particular ethos.

The starting point for these studies was the discussions during the inter-war period – held above all in Germany but also in Sweden – about the crisis of medicine and of the medical profession (chapter 1). Developments in legislation concerning the authorization of doctors show the ambiguity of the Swedish doctor's legal identity (chapter 2). The Swedish medical profession's efforts to hold on to the concept of internalized ethics meant that formal ethical rules were not accepted until 1951 (chapter 3). A study of medical obituaries revealed that the ideal doctor was seen as a man and a good colleague with his ethics rooted in antiquity (chapter 4). The heterogeneous medical profession has not been able to reach a consensus as to a common identity or common interests and ideals. The efforts of leading men amongst Swedish doctors gain charismatic, traditional and legal legitimacy for the profession have been opposed. After 1960, however, doctor's legitimacy in the scientific field has gained ground (chapter 5). Debate concerning the ethos of the doctors served as a strategy to unite the profession and to draw boundaries against those considered to be unqualified actors in the field of the healing arts. This, in itself, is part of this ethos.

Medicine on Mission: The International Health Reform of Seventh-day Adventists and their Health Care Facilities in Sweden

The international non-conformist denomination, Seventh-day Adventists, have since their foundation in 1863, had a distinctive health care model for their members. The life-style has included vegetarian diet, abstinence from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and the observance of a day of rest once a week. The health policy has striven to care for God’s creation in the hope of resurrection at the Day of Judgment and to reform the conventional medical practice. The Adventists have pursued an extensive international health care system – from the start based on dietary and physical treatment methods, such as hydrotherapy, massage and physiotherapy – in line with the Christian mission. Health care establishments have been inaugurated around the world as a vehicle for enabling the Christian health care message to reach the upper classes.

With Adventist and Doctor, John Harvey Kellogg’s Battle Creek Sanatorium in Michigan as both inspirational source and educational institution, the health care mission - including a vegetarian health food industry, following in the footsteps of cornflakes - spread to the Nordic countries by the turn of the century, 1900. Skodsborgs Badesanatorium near Copenhagen became the model institution for several health care establishments in Sweden during the 1900’s, such as Hultafors Sanatorium. The American-Nordic link has manifested itself through co-publication of papers, exchange of health care personnel and reporting to the central Adventist church.

The American non-conformist domain as well as a private sphere of activity, aiming mainly from the outset at society’s upper classes, has encountered certain difficulties in maintaining this distinction in Sweden’s officially increasing secularised society, and in relation to a state health insurance and a publicly financed health care system. With the passing of time, the socioeconomic composition of patients at Hultafors became more heterogeneous, and conventional medical procedures were increasingly incorporated into the array of treatment resources. The successful enterprises – as they had been for a considerable time - could not, at the end of the 20th century, continue to be self financing or fulfil the missionary objectives among the upper classes. The institutionalised health care apparatus came to an end around the turn of the century, which also included the sale of health associated food product companies.

The Seventh-day Adventist’s combination of medicine and religion with Christian missionary aims have indeed, not only steered health care models and institutions worldwide, but also which target groups to mainly turn to, the specific treatment philosophy, desirable working environment and which medical technologies to use. Furthermore, the Adventist’s health reform and care of the sick provide an example for how different medical cultures influence each other and develop in relation to one another in a pluralistic medical market. The developments are not merely a reflection of the medical, scientific and technical advancements, but also of the medical market’s structure, financing and (inter)national connections, of religion, culture and not least of all, patients’ options and their choices.

    Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Nyckelord: Ogifta [unmarried], gifta [married], oäkta barn [bastards], fosterbarn [foster children], vandel [repute], fattigvård [poorhouse], normalitet [normality], avvikande [abnormal], värderingar [values]

    Abstract [en]

Reading is something that has not been obvious to those who have been admitted to prisons around Sweden. The reading was considered to be more of a rehabilitation of the interns and the reading was used to make them better people, a way to show that the prison made prisoners better citizens. It would take a while for the librarians to gain access to the prison libraries. However, it did not become very easy then. There was a high wall between the professional groups, the prison staff and the librarians and the communication between them was not the best. As a result, the work was thwarted and misunderstandings occurred.

It was not until the 1950s and 1960s that librarians got a breakthrough in the matter and the debate surrounding the neglect of prison libraries. Articles and books were written on the subject that raised the issue.

This essay concerns the discussion that was held at this time through a discourse analysis, with the WPR approach and its analytical questions as tools. The method found that the problems behind the neglect of the prison libraries were not only the most obvious, that is, the financial shortage, but the evaluation of the interns' reading. When reading went from being a rehabilitative and educational issue to becoming more of an entertainment, its value diminished.

By studying the discussions that took place during the time period, the problems could be identified and analysed. Subsequently, the solutions that were executed were identified and this thesis studied how the solutions coalesced in a major venture at Hall prison. The investment was made by the School Board and the Prison and Probation Service and was one of the largest investments made with serving librarians, newly built library, sufficient budget and a solid library service during the three years of the project.

Forming and Fashioning Early Scandinavian Sanctity: Liturgy and its narrative context2019Ingår i: Heiligkeiten: Konstruktionen, Funtionen und Transfer von Heiligkeitskonzepten im europäischen Früh- und Hochmittelalter / [ed] Andreas Bihrer, Fiona Fritz, Stuttgart: Franz Steiner Verlag, 2019, s. 73-87Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores how local saints were constructed in early medieval Scandinavia. Focussing on the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries, it specifically considers how four female saints fit into the new narratives which were created in the process of the Christianization of Scandinavian society. What made female Scandinavian saints unjque? How did they fit into the larger, over-arching Christian narrative? By studying the composition of new, unique liturgical texts, this study suggests that mythopoetic moments can instead be seen as movements. The textual co=unjties which authored these texts and their interconnectivity are thus related to the active and permanent establishment of emerging cults.

'Not all those who wander are lost': Saintly Travellers and their Companions in medieval Scandinavia2019Ingår i: Travel, Pilgrimage and Social Interaction from Antiquity to the Middle Ages / [ed] Jenni Kuuliala, Jussi Rantala, London: Routledge, 2019, s. 226-247Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores perceptions of historical saintly travel and discusses whether travelling was to convey a precise ideology or to provide an interpretation of a historical situation, highlighting social and communal aspects of travel. It focuses on the groups of saints in terms of their being members of the laity or missionaries, these aspects were shown to have had a bearing only on the type of journey the saint undertook. The chapter aims to explore perceptions of travel in the past and its association with holiness by studying accounts of travel in the hagiographical texts that were composed for a selection of Danish and Swedish saints. Studying sources written for the cults of early local saints in Scandinavia can provide insights into previously neglected aspects of medieval history in the area. Several of the local Scandinavian lay saints are described as having undertaken important journeys during their lifetimes.
