    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe how managers at the eldercare system especially in nursing homes work to ensure high quality care. For this purpose, a qualitative method was used in this study and four managers at nursing home have been interviewed. Previous studies have shown that managers in some cases are restricted in their actions and that this may slow down the improvement of the care. At the same time the managers describe their work as demanding and diverse. They have a significant staff responsibility, meaning that they have to ensure the quality of care.  In this study, some previous results have been confirmed for example that the managers feel that they have an impact on the quality of care, that managers value their contacts with staff, patients and relative highly and that their main purpose is the quality of care. The data was analyzed using one of many role theories and with different descriptions of leadership. The results show that the managers are working to ensure that the quality of the care is high by ensuring that the staff is competent, participating in development meetings, maintaining good contact with serval actors like staff, patients and relative, providing staff training courses and involving the staff in developing a more productive environment. Therefore, the managers have more impact on how good the quality of the care is than one might think.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe how male social workers who work in the section for children and family in one municipality in southern Sweden, experience that their gender influences their daily work. The main focus is to understand what it means to be a man in the social services department. The first research question was how the male social workers experienced how their gender influenced their contact with children and parents in terms of possibilities and obstacles. The second research question was how the male social workers experienced how their gender influenced their working place in terms of possibilities and obstacles. The third research question was how the male social workers experienced that their gender affected the work with women colleagues. The fourth and last research question was how the male social workers experienced what it means to be a man in the present society. The study was based on a qualitative method and contains semi-structured interviews done with five social workers. I analyzed my interviews with the help of a theory which focused on masculine hegemony and with the help of prior research in this area. My results show that male social workers experience both possibilities and obstacles because of their gender when working with children and parents. Male social workers also felt that their gender affected their work with women colleagues.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how gender is created in the Administrative Court´s application of care of Young Persons (Special Provisions) Act. The theoretical starting point is the gender perspective. My empirical work consists of 27 court cases from 2010 and 2011. These are investigated for common themes by a qualitative content analysis. The result and analysis consist of four court cases representing one theme each. The result shows that boys and girls are taken into custody because of different reasons and that the court creates and maintains images related to gender, by highlighting some qualities that are inherent to boys and girls respectively, while others qualities are made invisible.

    Abstract [en]

After repeated criticism of the social services about how they manage family care, the National Board of Health and Welfare decided to solve the problem by importing a model used in England (Integrated children's system). This was translated into Swedish conditions and named BBIC (Barns behov i centrum = Child’s needs at the center). Our study aims to investigate whether BBIC will contribute to more and more extensive follow-ups of children placed than before, with a focus on the child's best. This has been studied through qualitative interviews with six social workers who work with children investigations. The results indicate that follow-up is becoming more wide when BBIC is used, the social welfare worker needs to see the child several times to obtain all the information that BBIC documents require. The result also indicates that the social workers use different BBIC documents when they do follow-ups. There are also other parts of the follow-up in which social welfare workers work different, for example how often they visit the child between the statutory reassessments.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine two medium-sized municipalities are working to people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to go from daily activities to a paid employment in the regular labor. Work is seen as a civil right and is a measure of participa-tion in society. The Swedish government believes that the work must be available to all that includes people with intellectual disabilities. Even so, daily activities, the contribution of LSS is increases the most. The daily activities will offer incentives, development, and community and shall contribute to people get access to work or studies. I conducted five interviews based on an interview guide with managers and consultants whose field of work is daily activities with a focus on labor-oriented jobs with an individu-al investment. The areas identified during the study and who were important in the work for a wage em-ployment were: preparation for work, business contacts and step into paid work. The anal-ysis is based from the perspectives of: inclusion-exclusion and citizenship. The conclusion was that the labor-oriented works with individual placement are an alternative for those who want and have the ability to be in a workplace. The transition to paid work, however, was not common. Factors that influenced this were: that companies do not have the finan-cial means, the knowledge of providing support from employment services and lack of cooperation between different agencies, but also an uncertainty factor of the individuals themselves

Key words: LSS, daily activities, work, performing mental Disabilities

Ungdomars övergång från skola till arbetsliv: Aktuella utmaningar och lokala erfarenheter2010Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The work as a personal assistant is sometimes associated with certain problems. Studies have shown that personal assistants often experience indistinct rules and roles concerning what should or should not be included in their duties. This study was undertaken to evaluate problems associated with the profession as a personal assistant, how widespread they are and how they are dealt with. Specifically, the study evaluates if the personal assistants have to do duties that they consider they are not assigned to do. Different roles (formal as informal) are also discussed which may be of current interest in this study, but also how we see people on basis of ethics and moral. In order to examine how widespread the ambiguity regarding the duties of the personal assistant, a quantitative study using a questionnaire was used in this study. The result of the questionnaire showed that in half of the cases the assistant had a different opinion than the user, which duties was included in the work. Moreover, the results also showed that the personal assistant would still do what the user wanted them to do, even though they did not think it was included in their duties.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze youth community service in the Kalmar municipality. Our focus was on juvenile offenders and predecessor of public authorities. The juvenile offenders in our study have completed youth community service. A qualitative study was undertaken which include seven interviews. Our empirical data were compared and analyzed with previous research data. This was used in combination with two theoretical perspectives relevant to this study’s purpose and questions. Results of our empirical data showed that the experience of youth community service was an appropriate/good penalty method.  Even though the juveniles viewed it as an appropriate/good method, they did not consider it an effective method to prevent them from committing additional crimes. The study also showed that the adolescents’ viewed the experience very differently when the treatment came from the predecessors of public authorities. The juveniles in the study thought the police had a bad attitude but considered the social service to be very helpful and active listeners. The predecessors of public authorities thought the cooperation between them to be good and important.

Delaktighet under tvång.
    Abstract [en]

Swedish law (SOL 2001:45, LVU 1990:52) has gone through several changes to promote participation. The law also includes that young people should be able to participate even during a placement at youth detentions.

The aim of this study is to describe how young people at youth detentions are participated in their treatment plans. The questions of the study were: How and where are the young opinions produced in their treatment plans; how did the opinions change during the time in detention; and how have the opinions been considered at youth detentions? Participation is a wide concept with different meanings. The meaning of participation in this study is that youth have been listened to and that their opinions have been paid attention to. A document study of 15 treatment plans was carried out using a qualitative method.

The result shows that in four of the treatment plans, no participation exists.

The result also shows that opinions from young people in their treatment plans were produced differently between plans. The opinions that were visible showed both comments of treatments, measures and desires regarding everyday life.

My conclusion is that participation is limited in the studied treatment according to the big amount of material that exists in treatment plans.

The systematic way found in the local template used by youth detentions contains specific headlines according to legislation. Despite these structured headlines, adapted to suit the youth’s voice, there are differences and varying extents in how the youth’s voice is produced and requested.

Despite efforts of legislation, there is no guarantee that participation is made possible in practice. The compulsion and the surrounding environment minimize the scope for participation for the youth. How the helper uses their power to equalize the unbalance of power and conditions for young people to both be visible and taken into account in the treatment affects this. In spite of both legislation and organizational polices, there are different ways to interpret the young peoples’ right to participation.

"Stress är väldigt svårdefinierat, stort på något vis": En kvalitativ studie om hur skolsköterskor och kuratorer definierar och arbetar med stress på skolan2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Mental ill-health has increased in the community and especially among young people. Stress is considered as a conduciveness cause to the increasing mental ill-health and stress can lead to angst, worry, depression etcetera. The purpose with this study is to investigate how school nurses and welfare officers in high schools within defines and works with stress among the youths. The study also investigates how the school nurses and the welfare officers work to prevent stress in the schools and if there is cooperation between the two professions. The study is based on a social constructive perspective and a system-thinking. The study has been performed from a qualitative method in the shape of semi-structural interviews. The result of the study shows that school nurses and welfare officers defines stress diversely. The school nurses talks about stress as a natural and physiological reaction that makes people to perform whereas the welfare officers talks about stress as something that is difficult to define and as an imbalance between resources and demands on the individual. The causes of stress explain the respondents be the demands from the environment, the family situation and the situation in school. The respondents’ work with stress is not clear and there are no guidelines. Instead, the work is geared to the youths that are stressed.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how "Professional Exes", individuals that have exited a drug abuse and a criminal career and further are educated to work in the addiction field, transformed their identity and which factors that were significant in the process. The result of this study are based on semi-structured interviews with five Professional Exes and shows which specific factors in the process that contributed to the transformation and what kind of difficulties and barriers that existed during the process. The study suggests that, among other things, identification with others exes and the 12 Step Program are significant factors in the process. Furthermore, the study suggests that a difficulty in the transformation is that residues from the previous identity such as a poor self-esteem occurred in some situations.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is tounderstand the approach that the staff who works in the aftercare for juvenileoffenders have to the organizational structure in the organization they workin. SiS is the authority which is taking care of the juvenile offenders if theybeen sentence to closed youth institutional care, when they are done it is thesocial service were the adolescent live which is responsible for the aftercare. This is decided by the law since 1999, if a young person between 15 and 17commit a serious crime, they can be sentenced to closed youth institutionalcare. The interest for this study was the aftercare and what possibleparticipant was involved in the aftercare for this young people. By looking upearlier research in the area and doing six different interviews with bothsocial workers, staff on the SiS-institution and an organization for ex convictthe purpose was examines. To analyze the interviews the theory called newinstitutionalism was used. The study shows that aftercare is individual and notall of these young people need aftercare but if it is going to work the firstcondition is that the adolescent him/herself want to have support by socialservice. Another condition is that SiS and social service have a goodcooperation with each other, the adolescent, the family and other importantparticipant. Everything in the care for these young people has to be individualbecause no one is the same, everyone has their own needs and limits. The studyalso shows that the staff has a different approach to the organizationalstructure, depending on which organization they work in and what position theyhave in the organization. The most common approach in this study was that theyhave to do their job to fix these young people, but they always have tostruggle to that fact that it is other people who set the law and the rulesthat they are going work from.

Etnicitet, ungdom och socialt arbete: En analys av kulturbegreppet i ett komplext och kluvet forskningsfält2010Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to present, describe, and analyze scientific and official Swedish discourses that deal with social work with ethnic minority youth. The empirical analysis is built on an analysis of different texts such as scientific articles, public reports, teaching materials from 1960-2005 about social work with ethnic minority youth and describes the development of different perspectives on ethnicity and culture that have dominated social work debates. A very common and popular discourse both in research and in official contexts is that social problems are explained by cultural background when it comes to ethnic minority youth whereas the same problem among young people with “Swedish” background is explained by social or psychological aspects. This is an analytical framework that has been dominant in social work discourse from the 1960s forward, yet which is seldom explored and problematized in empirical studies. One of the main findings/arguments is that culture is an important key term used in both ”constructing”, explaining, and solving social problems in relation to ethnic minority youth. The most dominant theoretical approach in discussions of ethnic minority youth’s identity formations is a culturalist perspective often referred to as “the second generation problem”. This is a perspective that is built on an essential and static understanding of culture and a theoretical approach I call the cultural distance logic. Another finding in the material analyzed is that different questions are focused on and explained differently during different time periods. Further, this also means that methods and suggestions with how to develop social work with people with minority background, has also changed during the time period studied.

The texts analyzed are contextualized in relation to debates and politics over immigration. For example, in the early 1960 an evolutionary understanding of culture dominated (with Swedish culture as modern and desired) and assimilation was proposed as an ideal. Whereas during the 1970s a more multiculturalists and in many ways more egalitarian understanding of culture dominated and social workers focused on ways to help children with ethnic minority background keep contact with their culture of origin. One of the outcomes of this perspective in the texts analyzed is that people/youth with ethnic minority background were now described as a representation of a nation and the method of ‘cultural competence’ was equated with solely having an ethnic minority background. Later on, in the 1980s- 1990s culture again becomes something problematic and connected to lack of adaption. During this time we can see how social problems are understood within the framework of there being ‘big differences’ between “Swedes” and “immigrants”, and that these factors are central in explaining social problems.

In the 1990s the relevance of culture has been questioned and a big theoretical controversy can in recent years be seen in how to discuss ethnic minority youth and social work. Are social problems to be explained by culture only or is it the structures in society, such as socio-economic inequalities and discrimination? These debates are “old” but now crystallized in the discussion of honor related violence. This is a discussion that places the immigrant family in problematic light and they are portrayed sometimes as a salvation and sometimes the destroyer of the possibility for young people with ethnic minority background to become “real Swedes”.

Keywords: young people with ethnic minority background, social work, culture, ethnicity, discrimination.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding and awareness of what the pathways into and out of debt problems can look like, why people get into bad debt situations, how problems are handled and how they are perceived.

The empirical data is based on semi-structured narrative interviews with 32 people who can relate to a debt settlement in three ways, either by just having applied for a debt settlement, finding themselves in the midst of a debt settlement or being debt-free since a few years back. The material is analyzed in terms relating to the processes, strategies and impact factors surrounding debt problems and debt settlements.

Debt problems can either happen slowly and gradually or arise suddenly and unexpectedly. The causes may be an interaction between individual and structural factors. Both coping strategies and influencing factors can change over time and depend on where in the debt process one is. The results show that the coping strategies vary from active to passive, from open to closed, where the determining factors are mainly how one was treated/ received, one's health, age, sense of shame and guilt, social relationships, as well as the causes of debt.

The results show how there is interplay between individual and structural factors in terms of causes, but also in the strategies and approaches expressed. The coping strategies are influenced and changed with the time scale over the debt process. Women have a risk to a greater extent than men to suffer from debt problems without having spent any money, but instead by acting as co-signer or guarantor.

The conclusion is that debt problems do not just affect a certain group of individuals, but that anyone can in principle be affected by excessive debt. What becomes clear is that there is not only one but several ways into and out of debt problems in which both individual and structural factors are important. Although there is a way out of excessive debt problems through debt relief law, results show that the solution extends over time and has far-reaching consequences for both individuals and society.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative study with a case study research design, where we studied social workers and politicians view on honor-related problems of underage girls and boys in the age 13-17. We need knowledge about honor related violence and oppression in the political community and social services to work with honor-related problems. Political decisions affect how social work is developed around the honor problem; therefore, it is also important to highlight this direction for the work. It requires a knowledge complement of honor-related problems not to risk exposing the child to further risk from the family (Hedersförtryck, 2009). This is to live up to, for example the law of Social Services, school law and Human Rights (Hussein & Kinuka-Svedberg, 2010). We conducted semi-structured interviews with two social workers, a social worker at the women's shelter, a women's safety coordinator and a chairman of the Social Welfare Committee in the selected commune. When we analyzed the results, we made a hermeneutic analysis with interpretation from an intersectional perspective based in postmodern feminist theory. The result that we have reached as regards the design of the work with honor-related problem is that it is highly influenced by the decisions of women's safety coordinator and politicians. The respondents mentioned the concepts controlling, limiting young people, married off by the family, and that they have little autonomy. Also the patriarchal family pyramid was raised in the definition and that there may be integration problems as a result of the norm-breaking lifestyle that comes with their own culture. The viewpoints which the respondents had on the honor problem we have seen influence how they wish to work. They said that they wanted to educate and inform the newly arrived adults who immigrate to the country, about Swedish laws and regulations. Social workers said that in time they have learned to apply the youth perspective as much as the family perspective which is more than they did before when they rather applied more of a youth perspective.

Ethnography on the Internet: an overview2012Ingår i: Pondering on methods: A variety of methodological concerns / [ed] Jacobsson Katarina & Sjöberg Katarina, Lund: Faculty of Social Sciences, Lund University , 2012, 1, s. 41-54Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this chapter is twofold. Firstly, to review relevant online research and method literature and to present an overview of some of the methodological and ethical concerns which, for the purpose of this chapter, have been categorised in three themes: defining and interpreting empirical data on the Internet, creating a research field on the Internet and dilemmas and prospects when observing without being seen. Secondly, to contribute to the methodological and ethical discussions by using the author’s research about a Swedish virtual red-light district as an example. The chapter shows that the Internet is an artificial arena with both textual and visual environments, which is in a constant process of change following cultural trends and technological innovation. This means that we can always expect the emergence of new methodological and ethical challenges and it is very important to continuously develop and discuss research on the Internet from a methodological and an ethical point of view. The knowledge we have about the Internet becomes, in fact, easily outdated compared to other arenas. The chapter’s conclusions are that ethnographers online have only made limited use of the potentials that the Internet offers, that it is important to take account of which alternative techniques ethnographers online do not make use of and most importantly, why they are not using them.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about conception in the evaluation of financial assistance within the social services. The aim of this study is to describe and understand how social workers reason about variation, conception and local norms and its significance in the evaluation process. To reach this purpose we have conducted semi-structured interviews with eight social workers in which different themes were discussed and reasoned about. In order to understand and analyze our results we have studied/used the knowledge about tacit knowledge and street-level bureaucracy. Our results showed, as previous research states, that social workers do have conceptions about clients. Beyond that it also showed that they were well aware of the presence of the conception and that it is consistently processed with the help of colleagues. In addition to the help of colleagues the use of self-reflection was valuable to increase the awareness about conception. Furthermore the study showed that social workers believe that the conceptions are established through ones qualities and experiences. Social workers also suggest that these two variables contribute to their gut feeling, which they mean to be inevitable in the evaluation process.

The study concluded that there is an ongoing reasoning about conception in the evaluation process of financial assistance among social workers and that social workers found it to be important to continuously discuss and deal with this issue.

    Abstract [en]

Income support is often described as the community’s farthest protection, as a last economic way out. From the clients perspective it´s very important to get possibility to an equivalent and correct assessment. Even if it´s an individual assessment the individual social worker´s assessment should not be different than other social worker´s, this from two aspects – quality and the rule of law. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze social worker´s assessments relate to gender. The central questions is what it is for likeness and differences in the social worker´s assessments and decisions and if the social worker´s assessments is based in their ideas of the clients gender. To achieve the purpose a quality method with interviews and cases has been used. The social worker´s has after the interview got two cases and has given an assessment. Half of the social worker´s got the case with a female client and half of the social worker´s with a male client. The result is based on six different social worker´s answers in three different municipalities in the same county. Symbolic interactionism and socialization has been used as theoretical framework and gender role and legal security as relevant concepts. The result shows that it is certain differences in the social worker´s assessments of clients who applying for incoming support. In some cases the differences can deduce to the clients gender. Men and women get different help depending on different needs.

    Abstract [en]

We have made qualitative interviews with five respondents who were on sick leave in more than six months and then returned and came back to work fully. Those we have interviewed have been on sick leave for different diagnoses. We want to study how social relationships within the private- and working- life contributes to recovery, for people who are on long-term sick leave, and how the factors contributes for that person to return to work. In our respondents privacy life we want to see the importance of relations with friends and acquaintances have for recovery. In the workplace we look for the importance of our respondent’s employer and colleagues have for their recovery. Our respondents declare recovery as a process where the individual needs of sick leave should be in focus. Our results have revealed that the participation of the sick leave of these aforementioned groups have a positive effect on recovery. When our respondents have addressed the nature and “Försäkringskassan” as important recovery factors has this also been included in our study.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine how the interventions for homeless persons in the municipality of Kalmar are organized. The study is based on four half-structured qualitative interviews with both representatives from different instances and also from persons who have experience of being homeless.

The theoretical bases we have used to analyze the material are organization theory, specifically the concept of bureaucracy. Our results show that homelessness is not seen as a problem in itself, since the general view is that homeless people often have a complex problem scenario where drug- and alcohol abuse and mental illness are common.

It is often the latter that takes priority in the interventions and the housing question is therefore neglected. We also found that social services do not have a satisfactory structure around the organization of the work on homelessness. They do not have any specific device in Kalmar that focus on homelessness issues with the result that the existing units are forced to take care of the work of homelessness. This represents a problem as the interventions are being adapted to this area of specialization with the result that the housing issue is overlooked.

Another conclusion is that there is a lack of long-term solutions in the municipality. Today the efforts are mainly aimed at placing homeless people in short-term temporary accommodation.

    Abstract [en]

In the year of 1935 Sweden started to apply the practice of their first sterilizing laws. In this thesis 2 sterilizing laws are considered. The laws regulated those individuals who were not considered appropriate for reproduction. The sterilizing laws themselves are based on several large investigative studies on how to evaluate and categorize different individuals.  The purpose of my thesis is to examine through a literature study how these individuals considered for sterilization were valued and how social problems were created to fit the character features of these people. I also look at how sterilization became an acceptable method to deal with these constructed social problems.

The materials I have studied include 3 pre-studies and the 2 laws about sterilization which were the result of these pre-studies.  I found that the motives behind the sterilizations were social, economical and genomic hygienical. I also found that some fragments of the 2 sterilizing laws are also present in modern laws still in use today. In 1999 a new Swedish law was passed that regulated compensation for the individuals who hade previously been sterilized.

    Abstract [en]

In this study we examined co-workers experiences of having a previous colleague as their leader, which is relatively common. We made qualitative interviews with six social welfare administrators who had been through this situation at work. The questions had been concentrated at how they were affected by the previous relationship, what expectations they had, and their view of how the business had been handled by their leader. The result of these interviews has then been connected to two leadership theories. The conclusion of the study was that the experience of the situation differs. One negative experience that emerged was that the leader had a hard time letting go of the roll as a colleague, which in turn made a few co-workers feel bad about how some co-workers were favoured and others not. Some of the commented expectations were to receive a more specific job-competent leader from outside, a leader who could raise and advance the activity at work, along with expectations of treating all co-workers equally. An opinion that the leader was always looking for consensus has emerged which wasn't always perceived positive, another wish was that the leader also has to be able to make own decisions. Everyone experienced a great involvement in the activities and the leadership was also experienced to have been democratic.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine what knowledge social workers express about home visits in child welfare investigations and how they know what to do. Sixteen social workers who work with social investigations concerning children were asked to discuss the topic home visit in three focus group interviews in three different municipalities in southern Sweden. The social workers in our focus group interviews mainly discussed the purpose of the home visit, what social workers do during home visits and furthermore their opinions about guidelines and policy documents regarding the home visit.  To get an understanding of what type of knowledge is the basis for social workers use of the home visit, we used Polanyi's concept of 'tacit knowing' as well as the Aristotelian theory of knowledge containing three forms of knowledge, that is, episteme, techne and fronesis. We found that the displaying of ‘tacit knowing’ was a consistent feature in all groups, as they had difficulty expressing their knowledge use. This may be considered as an effect of their knowledge being deeply incorporated into them as social workers. Our observations also indicate that the social workers mostly use the form of knowledge fronesis which is aimed at the common sense and the practical wisdom. Evidence for this was found in how respondents frequently described how they observe the interpersonal interaction, and that they sense the home's atmosphere to get a picture of the child's situation.

    Abstract [en]

This study represents seven adolescents’ perspective on online poker gambling. The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe adolescents’ thoughts and experiences of online poker gambling, thus gaining a deeper knowledge and understanding of how gambling affects youths in their living conditions and in their identity development. This was done by studying the symbolism and meaning that gambling has in these youths every day live and in their identity development. Interviews with one female and six male teenagers age fifteen to seventeen were made, using a qualitative approach. The empirical data were analysed through previous research and by using several theoretical perspectives that were found to be relevant for this study’s purpose and questions.

Results of the study show that friends and media have a significant meaning for youths’ introduction to online poker gambling. The adolescents’ gambling has been variable and can be seen as part of their identity development as they experiment with different roles and lifestyles. The study shows that it’s not just one quality of online poker that attracts young people, but a combination of various qualities that are closely intertwined and together contribute to the game experience the young seek. This study also shows that young people find strategies to manage risks tied to online poker gambling. In addition, the study shows that online poker as a typical male arena strengthens and verifies the male adolescent boys in this study in their identities as young men. Notions of gender in online poker gambling consequently contribute to that young people reproduce gender specific gambling patterns that exist in society.

En diskursanalytisk studie av Aftonbladets publiceringar kring ADHD2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladets conception of the phenomenon ADHD. The essay regards the language that is used (and the values reflected in it) as a sort of mirror where the public opinion is expressed, established and put forward. Being such a constructive factor in the creation of the phenomenon, the language is considered of big importance and therefore this essay is using a discourse-analytic approach to the problem.

The aim of the essay is to achieve a discourse-analytic understanding of Aftonbladets ADHD publications. This paper reaches the conclusion that in Aftonbladet, ADHD is put forward as something extraordinary, not normal and unusual, which results in the subject-positions “Unwanted”, “Disabled” and “Function beneficial”. Since this is the results presented in Aftonbladets discourse, it is also these values that establish the mirror where the public opinion, the diagnosed people, as well as the phenomenon as an abstract creation, flashes themselves. In that way these values create certain outlines and frames for the phenomenon ADHD.

    ABSTRACT

Title:  How 3 pairs of foster home parents view their life in regards to working as a foster home.

    Supervisor: Mikael Sandgren

Assessor: Kerstin Gynnerstedt and Anders Lundberg

The purpose of this study was to examine how foster home parents view their life as a foster home. Because it was a general question regarding the subject own view the study was conducted under the inspiration of grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 2008). Three interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded and analysed using constant comparative analysis. The constant comparative analysis resulted in five categories; lifestyle as a prerequisite, isolation, understanding, the love for the children and transfer of custody. The three properties that emerged were resources, commitment and calling. A hypotheses was formed. No theory emerged through analysis.

The study concludes with some correlations emerging: the foster parents personal resources and commitment to the foster children, seems to allow them to withstand severe conflicts concerning their practice as a foster home for the children without the foster parents choosing to resign. A reason for this seems to be that they are worried that no one else can guarantee the best interests of the child, the reason for the foster parents believing this seems to be due to the lack of good communication between the foster parents and the social services. All of the families had good experiences with social services but chose too focus on the negative experiences in the interviews.

Statistics show that women are in less numbers in jobcentre programs towards disabled people. The study investigates how employment officers at the Swedish jobcentre categorize unemployed disabled customers, with the aspect gender. The result of the study is that handling officer’s don´t sees it as they categorize customers. But still they categorize women and men when they talk about the labor market and when they talk about men and women’s physical capacity. Some handling officers say that the explanation why women are in less numbers in jobcentre programs is that the categorizing is done by social insurance agency and also by the segregated labor market. The study is based on the perspective intersectionality. The study has been performed from a qualitative method in form of semi-structural interviews.

The study aims to illustrate how women victims of male violence in intimate relationships are treated during the legal process and with professional perspective describe what women’s experiences considered to be in the legal process. The study also aims to draw attention to the interventions for abused women during the legal process.

The results are based on interviews with professionals in the justice system, and on observations in the courtroom. Overall our results show that abused women are in need of a great quantity of help and support before, during and after the negotiation. The legal process is very stressful for the women. In conclusion, we believe that the social services should take greater responsibility for abused women during the legal process and provide support to women so that they are able to get through the legal process without a great deal of emotional damage.

The purpose of this study was to examine and seek understanding of mediators' approach to mediation in sex crimes. More precise, the purpose was aiming to answer what kind of experience mediators have by mediating in sex crimes, their views on opportunities and risks, and their role in the mediation process. The study has been carried out through a qualitative approach, based on six semi-structured interviews with mediators from different parts of Sweden. Theoretical concepts such as diad, triad, restorative justice and the social construction of offenders and victims of sexual crimes have been used to analyze the results. The study’s results shows that three of the mediations had worked with sexual crimes in mediation, the rest only had some, or totally lacked that kind of experience. Mediators’ degree of relevant experience was drawn to conclusion to have no particular influence on their attitudes towards acting as mediators in sex crimes. The majority of the mediators saw the suitability of mediation in sex crimes by referring to the participants’ desire to take part, not on what offenses had been committed. The risks that existed in mediation of sexual crimes were related to the power relationship between victim and perpetrator, and the guilt and shame that the victim could feel. Mediation could there for be seen as a risk of revictimization and a further violating of the victim, but the mediators also showed that mediation in sexual crimes could bring opportunities to those involved. The way the mediators worked with mediation in sexual crimes, was interpreted to contribute to the opportunities of mediation and avoid its risks.

My big interest in sports was what shaped my choice of subject for the essay. The purpose of this study has been to explore the social meaning of team sports for functionally impaired persons. In order to fulfil the purpose of the essay I formed following questions: How do the actives experience their participation in team sports? And how important is the social intercourse in team sports to the individual welfare? The methods I’ve used have been qualitative with an ethnographic approach. I have used participant observations and field interviews to gather my empirical material. To analyze this material I have used theoretical concepts such as: group membership, social skills, social interaction, social inclusion and social exclusion. In this essay I have found out that team sports promotes people’s social skills. Therefore team sports are, according to my studies, a beneficial form of social work.

    Abstract [en]

The conception of exhaustion was first used in the end of 1960 and was then used in a psychological context directed towards the working life. Eventually was the conception devided into two main categories: mental and somatic symtoms. Today research of exhaustion is mainly aiming towards recovering and returning to working life.

This work sets out to analyse the importance and effects of social networks such as family, friends and professional relations in helping people who suffer from exhaustion to recover. The study is based on interviews with eith people who have suffered from exhaustion but today are recovered. To my aid I have used tree different questions: What part have the social network of family and friends ment to the recovery? What part has the professional relationships with doctors, therapists and curators ment to the recovery? How have you changed your life in order to maintain balance?

The interviews pointed out the importance of the social relationships as support, feedback and understanding that the process takes time. Courses in handeling stress had a vital part in order to learn how to manage stress, meet people with similar problems and the guidace of professionals. An important issue to maintain health and to keep the life balanced is consious present and to learn to do one thing at a time. The content of the examination has showed me that it is important to set your own boundaries and not to compare to others. It is also importent to take control over your own choices which is not easy to handle in todays stressed socity.

    Abstract

The aim in this dissertation is to investigate into the working of the rehabilitation process as to actors involved. A specific focus has been set on the component “Work introduction”. The study shows that the road back to work is a complex matter. Individuals involved have different backgrounds and living situations, which influence this rehabilitation. The empirical basis of the study is built on interviews of four employees and two earlier unemployed persons. The statements of the informants were analyzed through the two concepts: Activation and empowerment. The interviews revealed that the authorities were not entirely content with program “Work introduction”, since the cooperation lacked a coherent view on the common tasks. In some cases the result is that clients fall between the authorities. A main problem of their cooperation nails down to that the authorities apply different definitions. An insight of this study is that 50% get a job and 50% goes back to social insurance office after they had been passing through the program “Work introduction”. This asks for a more differentiated view on clients.
