Från nation till stat - en studie av Kataloniens strävan efter ett ökat självstyre2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Grapes of Wrath: A burden of liquor carried by farm workers - a heritage borne by children2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis deals with the difficulties concerning alcohol use and misuse among Coloured farm workers within the heart of the wine industry in South Africa. The current extent of alcohol use and misuse in the rural areas of the Western Cape Province is commonly referred to as the legacy of the dop system. The dop system was a legislative practice whereas farm workers were provided with small portions of cheap wine throughout the workday. The practice was racially targeted towards Coloureds and thus contributed to the creation of a dependent labour force and extensive alcohol-related difficulties among Coloured farm workers. The dop system was formally abolished in 1961 but the practice proceeded into the 1990s. Alcohol related difficulties do however tend to continue without signs of change.

The main purpose of the study is to investigate how current difficulties of alcohol use and misuse affect children’s life outcome and educational opportunities. It has also been important to investigate various aspects of living and working conditions in the farm villages that may be linked to alcohol issues. Another aim is to determine contributing factors to the continuance of alcohol use and misuse despite the abolition of the dop system. The work has been conducted according to the method of oral history theories in order to provide a bottom up approach, thus allowing the perspectives and the stories of the farm workers themselves to come forth.

Coloured farm workers in the region are largely affected by socio-economic concerns and uncertainty in regards of labour. Inexpensive and readily available alcohol in illegal liquor outlets, so-called shebeens, is a driving force to the consumption of alcohol. Farm workers are partly isolated upon the farm villages and commonly have limited opportunities of unionizing. This makes it crucial to let the farm workers and their families express how alcohol difficulties are manifested in and affecting their daily lives.

"Statistiskt sett har ju NE också fel": en kvalitativ studie rörande gymnasiebibliotekariers uppfattningar och undervisning kring Wikipedia2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine how Swedish upper secondary school librarians and related staff relate to the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. The research is placed in the all-embracing context of information literacy and source criticism on the Internet. The study was carried out in the form of qualitative interviews and based on two theoretical bases: firstly, the concept of cognitive authority stipulated by Patrick Wilson, and secondly the idea that Wikipedia has a draw towards late modern epistemological assumptions. The latter theory was also associated with the perceptions of knowledge among the library staff interviewed. According to the results, there seems to be a connection between a) the library staff’s perceptions of knowledge, b) the library staff’s actual knowing about Wikipedia, c) the library staff’s attitudes toward Wikipedia and d) the teaching performed by the library staff about Wikipedia. The results also suggest the cognitive authority of the traditional encyclopaedia to be strong, especially among those within the library staff not very familiar with Wikipedia. Those positive to Wikipedia possibly represent perceptions of knowledge with a draw towards the late modern. Finally, possible solutions regarding the improvement of information literacy and of Wikipedia usage among the upper secondary school pupils are discussed.

Pinocchio och diskokulan: Debatter kring offentlig konst2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

I uppsatsen undersöks två debatter kring offentlig konst.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the Swedish Plymouth brethren’s relation to contemporary technology. What types of technology are considered acceptable and where do they draw the line? Due to the brethren’s separation from the parts of the world they believe leads people away from God, such as the entertainment industry, immoralities etc., they reject use of television and radio. These two are viewed as uncontrolled types of technology since the user does not have control of its contents. Computers and mobile phones are however accepted types of technology nowadays, since the user can choose what content they wish to explore. These can also be filtered. The qualities a type of technology must have to be accepted by the brethren is a clear purpose and usage. It must also be possible to control and/or modify to suit the brethren’s values. It cannot be used solely for pleasure, pastime, immoralities and/or be uncontrolled and impossible to modify.

The reason for the brethren’s complex relation towards contemporary technology has to do with their will to live separated from worldly things. At the same time they claim they do not want to live isolated but be a part of contemporary society. In order to balance separation from the society with being a part of it at the same time, they have had to embrace technology but have negotiated with it in order for it to be in line with their teachings. Since the brethren also have many companies it is likely that they have had to adapt to the technological era in order to maintain their position on the market.

Att göra det oväntade - en utvärdering av marknadsföringskampanjen "Låna dig rik" på ett mindre folkbibliotek2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Futurum.kom is a collaborative marketing project with the aim of strengthening the internal organization of Länsbibliotek Sydost, Regionbibliotek Kalmar and the 25 public libraries within the southeast region. The project intends to externally build the brands of the public libraries in Blekinge, Kalmar and Kronobergs län. This thesis is a study and evaluation of the implementation and results of Futurum.kom’s first campaign "Låna dig rik" at a public library. The analysis is based on the following issues:

 What goals does the library have with the "Låna dig rik"-campaign.

 What is the feedback from the staff's experience of the users in terms of needs and demands?

 In which way does the library choose to implement the marketing campaign and what role do the users have in this process?

 What is the internal performance of the library's marketing campaign, what was the experience of the staff of the campaign?

 What is the external result of the library's marketing campaign?

The method is based on a case study of a single library, with a series of interviews and document analysis of written and electronic documents. The study reveals that the library`s main experience of the "Låna dig rik"- campaign was the marketing event held outside the library premises. By going outside the library and presenting themselves in a new situation and environment, they created new opportunities to meet the users and to build good relationships. The study also discovered that the library sought to combine the "Låna dig rik"-campaign with its own marketing strategy.

Svarta ögon och långa naglar: hur skurkarna i Disneys tecknade långfilmer framställs visuellt2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Keywords: globalisering, Charlotte Bydler, konstvärldar, Senegal, Dakarbiennalen, biennaler.

Det katolska prismat: En kvalitativ studie om vardagsreligiositet, prästskandalen och den katolska kyrkan på den irländska landsbygden2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine how Irish people on a rural location practice their faith in everyday life. The intention is also to find out what strategies my interviewees use to negotiate the abuse scandal and what their thoughts on the Catholic Church are. The material mainly consists of interviews with seven people part of a rural parish in Ireland. My research also entails smaller observations and conversations in the homes of the participants.

The results indicate that they all consider themselves religious, however not all Catholic. All of the participants integrate their religion in everyday life. It also showed that almost all of them used a certain strategy when negotiating the knowledge of the abuse scandal leaving just one participant saying it negatively affected his faith. My results show that all of them are asking for changes within the Catholic Church when it comes to celibacy, ordaining women and same sex marriages. The results of my study are analyzed with Meredith McGuire’s theory on lived religion and Peter Berger’s theory on socialization and secularization. Religious activity is occurring in my participants’ everyday life and church-based practices such as Mass or Confessions are not as important for them as for instance prayer and humility. It also shows that my participants are socialized into Catholicism but that the Church no longer can serve as a sole legitimating power and is being severely questioned. I would also argue that today’s modern society with different religions and expressions has led to my participants questioning of the Church. In the location I have studied the results show that individuals let religion into their everyday lives and create their own version of it. With these results I would argue that my participants allow religion to influence their everyday tasks and create their own religious practice. The results suggest that my participants are indeed part of a secularization process, the objective secularization which separates the Church and state. However, religion is still alive within the subjectivity of my participants.

"Man kan ju hitta i princip allt man behöver på Google": Högstadie- och gymnasielevers informationssökning i digitala medier2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine how high school students (age 13 to 19) search for information on the web and in databases. Furthermore, it aims to look into how critical of sources they are. The questions asked was: how the students search for information in digital media? Which kind of sources do the students use? How they evaluate the information they find? Do they get any education in information retrieval and source evaluation? To answer these questions students were interviewed in groups about their information retrieval behavior. Furthermore two school librarians were interviewed about their experience of the students’ information retrieval.During the interviews it was clear that the students had received quite sparse instructions on the subjects of information retrieval and criticism of the sources. Some students did not even know what the latter was. Their methods for information retrieval were quite simple and, especially in the case of the younger students, without much thought behind. Their main strategy seemed to be Google and Wikipedia. From the interviews with the school librarian I learned that one of the reasons the students do not receive instructions in the above mentioned subjects is the lack of interest from the teachers. The librarians thought that the solution was to build up a stronger relationship with the teachers.

Politiska visioner och regionala krafters inverkan på kulturarv: En studie om hur Kalmar läns kulturarv används och värderas i det postindustriella samhället2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative essay that has its starting point in the deindustrialized community in the county of Kalmar. At the time deindustrialization started, the globalization and the technical development took form, this resulted in increasing traveling in the world. The communities that had lost their industries had to find new ways of surviving. The politicians used the increasing travelling and tourism and saw a new industry in the tourism, therefore they made cultural heritage visible. Main focus lies in the will from politicians to visualize cultural heritage for economic gain and the administration of cultural heritage that in essence had to accept a new use of the cultural heritage. The studied organizations are regionförbundet and länsstyrelsen in the county of Kalmar. The questions are focused on the powers behind the visualization and who the responsible are. How regionförbundet and länsstyrelsen balance the development and preserve the cultural heritage in tourism industry. The last question grasps how the visualization affects the cultural heritages and how the cultural heritages are prioritized in the county of Kalmar. I´ve done a literature study and interviewed the concerned organizations. My conclusion is that the will of national politicians of visualizing cultural heritage affects the politicians of the county in Kalmar. Regionförbundet sees the cultural heritage as educational, for teaching the inhabitants about their history, and länsstyrelsen is working with preservation, both organizations work from the visions from “nationella kulturpolitiska målen” (Kulturplan 2012-2014; kultur med nya ögon; Tedenlind 2011-12-19; Thorstensson 2011-12-21). The cultural heritages are affected by the visualization, their meaning are changing because of a hybridization that are one effect of the globalization. Another important effect is a changed use that involves an increased and more intense usage of the cultural heritages.

"The Never Ending Story": Sårbarhet och kamp för överlevnad i Olofströms kommun2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The world around us is shrinking and globalization and capitalism are processes affecting the world. Global trends, like outsourcing and relocation of firms to low-cost countries, have become more common. This creates a huge vulnerability in the municipalities that today are concentrated around a single large company. One of these is Olofström which today is one of the most vulnerable municipalities in Sweden and whose survival today lies in the hand of the company ‘Volvo Cars Corporation’. In the fight for survival, the municipality of Olofström puts up strategies to work around its dependence on the engineering industry. There is an incentive to find ways to stop the depopulation which is occurring and affecting the municipality negatively. The commerce of the municipality is also being supported in all possible ways. My purpose with this paper was to identify the problems that exist in the municipality of Olofström whose survival revolves around Volvo Cars. I have shown the effects of this dependence. It has also been in my intention to identify potential clusters and collaborations that can be found in the municipality. The purpose was operationalized by four main research questions:

ü  Which survival strategies can be identified in the municipality of Olofström?

ü  Which networks and collaborations can be detected?

ü  Which dispersion effects are created by the engineering industry?

ü   How is Olofström affected by global trends?

I have chosen to use a qualitative research approach when conducting my study. I have also chosen to conduct qualitative interviews which have given me the data to answer parts of my research questions. In my theoretic approach I strategically selected the concepts and theories most applicable to my purpose. Therefore, I chose to focus on theories regarding globalization, capitalism, regionalism, regional innovation systems and regional clusters. In my research I have chosen to go from the general to the concrete and to interlace the two in my analysis. Through my analysis I have come to the conclusion that a concentration around a company can bring both positive and negative outcomes in space. Clusters can act as a survival strategy but can also have negative outcomes for the municipality’s fight for survival.

Svensk Hembygd eller Hemsk Svenskbygd: En studie av stereotyper bland svenskar som emigrerade till Amerika2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The survey aims to investigate and analyze how the image of Sweden and "Swedish character” is produced in the correspondence between Swedish immigrants and family at home, compared to how the image of America and the U.S. is produced. The starting point is the concept of identity, which is shaped by the social group a person belongs, which can lead to stereotypes are formed. How does the Emigrant describe his new life in letters home to Sweden? What comparisons are made? What memories are passed from the time at home? How does the picture changes over time? How does the stereotypes change over time? The material used are remnants and secondary sources in the form of correspondence between emigrants and their relatives back home. This has been analyzed and compared based on the concept of identity, ethnicity and stereotyping theory. The survey results show that the emigrants in one way ore another are unhappy in their new country. However, by using strategies in the form of various stereotypes they successfully sustain their visions and defend their choices.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract:

    Styrdokument i musikämnet

    -

    (Music Subject governing documents

    - A comparative study of Norwegian and Swedish policy documents in the Music subject in school)

The purpose of this study is to compare the Norwegian and Swedish policy documents on teaching in the Music topic. The comparison also applies to the requirements which have been in Sweden over time. In comparison, the policy document LGR 11 from Sweden, analyzed, and the governing documents MUS1-01 and R94 from the Norwegian School.

The main issue in the study is: How does the policy documents for the topic music in Sweden, compared to Norway? In order to answer the question, I compared the above-mentioned policy documents and set in relation to the musical substance is designed in Norway and Sweden.

In curriculum theory treats one problem based approaches in structural functionalism, pragmatism, social epistemology and post structuralism. The starting points are then used to explore various relationships between curriculum theory and didactics.

The principal researcher and proponent of curriculum theory is Ulf Lundgren. Lundgren has in his research developed the so-called "ramfaktorteorin" first in classroom studies and later in the study of education policy in a historical perspective. Ramfaktorteorin treated as a thinking tool for educational planning.

Historically the musical subject in the countries surveyed has developed in similar ways. The results show that there are both similarities and differences in the subject music you can see some similarities in the formulation of policy documents and primary school which in ¬ prostitution. However, there are some differences in the content of teaching and the documents that govern this. A major similarity is that both have gone from being fairly vague to be very concrete and precise. So that everyone can see what it is like for the assessment of musical substance. The music as a subject in its own right and therefore need highly trained and skilled teachers for deep knowledge, but all teachers should relate to creating an overall picture of the pupils.

Finally, highlights that the policy documents for the subject music look very similar in both countries. It is really only a few formal aspects that are more political in nature. In Norway, goes one year longer in school than they do in Sweden. This also means that you have time to have more music education in Norwegian schools than in Swedish.

Synen på bibliotek förändras inte på en dag: En utvärdering av klusterkampanjen "Den digitalt nyfikne" på ett folkbibliotek2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is an evaluation of the campaign [The digitally curious] that is part of the regional marketing campaign Futurum.kom. Its purpose was to strengthen the library's role in society. The campaign includes Regionbibliotek Kalmar, Länsbibliotek Sydost and also 25 public libraries in Kronoberg, Kalmar and Blekinge. The campaign [The digitally curious] is one of several cluster campaigns targeting their marketing to a specific audience and aims to promote awareness of what libraries have to offer and provide information on digital media and services. The target group for the campaign is a man between 45-65 years old, who is interested in digital technology. The campaign ran from September 19 to October 2, 2011, and included digital activities. The thesis addresses these questions:

    • What has the campaign [The digitally curious] for overall goals and how relevant were they?
    • What was the audience for [The digitally curious] and did they reach it?
    • What marketing channels did the library use and why them?
    • To what extent did the librarians perceive that the objectives of the campaign were achieved?
    • How did the public value the digital activities in the public library and how did they perceive the cluster campaigns, [The digitally curious], message.

The method used in the thesis was case studies, which included a survey of the public, interviews with librarians and document analysis.

Our study revealed that there is a need in society for digital activities to bridge the digital divide. The marketing campaign received positive feedback but the target group did not come to the extent that was desired. It was also revealed that to be successful in marketing and to work on bridging the digital divide, collaboration is a useful method.

På spaning efter en konstnär och formgivares positionering: en studie om Bertil Vallien och hans glaskonst2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Google Bilders användbarhet: Gränssnitt, sökfunktioner och återvinning2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay explores to what extent the Swedish language version of Google Images meets the usability requirements of average everyday users. Previously published studies on user behaviour and users‟ interface and search option preferences define the usability requirements, which are matched against Google Images‟ actual interface and search options. The retrieval method of Google Images is also briefly discussed, and users‟ opinions about Google Images too, as they come across in the previously published user studies.

The findings are that Google Images lack some of the things that users ask for, but it still seems to be the most used image search engine among average internet users and more appreciated than other search engines. Since the user studies were conducted, Google Images has changed its interface and added new options in a way that indicates that the developers have read and taken inspiration from the user-oriented image retrieval research, and still do so. This should mean that Google Images is even more user-oriented and therefore appreciated today, and it might improve even more in the near future.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Get Rich or Die Tryin': En undersökning av kapitalismen som modern mytologi i samtida självhjälpslitteratur2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether or not capitalism, viewed here as the system that is currently the dominant economic system in the Western world, can be seen as a modern myth or not. An author, Brian Tracy, of several popular self-help books is the target of this investigation and the language he uses in his books have been scrutinized in order to see whether or not he uses a religiously influenced, and more importantly, myth-creating language. In order to do so, Bruce Lincolns theories of myth have been used in correlation with Stefan Arvidssons definition ov myths. Also of interest is whether or not Tracy in his books uses any of the instruments of power defined by Michel Foucault to support his claims.

The investigation shows that capitalism indeed can be seen as a modern myth. This claim is supported by the facts that Tracy not only uses a language heavily influenced by Christian texts and belief but furthermore because he descirbes himself and the people he claims to have helped in a way that strongly resembles the narratives of myths. With the help of Foucault's theories I have also shown that Tracy works as an agent of capitalism who, perhaps involuntarily, strenghtens capitalism's claim as the dominant economic system in the Western world.

Distributed artificial intelligence, diversity and information literacy2011In: Nordic Journal of Information Literacy in Higher Education, ISSN 1890-5900, E-ISSN 1890-5900, Vol. 3, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

My proposal is based on my doctoral dissertation On the Shoulders of AI-technology : Sociology of Knowledge and Strong Artificial Intelligence which I succesfully defended on May 29th 2009. E-published http://www.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=12588&postid=1389611

The dissertation is concerned with Sociology’s stance in the debate on Strong Artificial Intelligence,.i.e. AI-systems that is able to shape knowledge on their own. There is a need for sociologists to realize the difference between two approaches to constructing AI systems: Symbolic AI (or Classic AI) and Connectionistic AI in a distributed model – DAI. Sociological literature shows a largely critical attitude towards Symbolic AI, an attitude that is justified. The main theme of the dissertation is that DAI is not only compatible with Sociology’s approach to what is social, but also constitutes an apt model of how a social system functions. This is consolidated with help from german sociologist Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory.

A lot of sociologists criticize AI because they think that diversity is important and can only be comprehended in informal circumstances that only humans interacting together can handle. They mean that social intelligence is needed to make something out of diversity and informalism. Luhmann´s systems theory gives the opposite perspective. It tells us that it is social systems that communicate and produce new knowledge structures out of contincency. Psychological systems, i.e. humans, can only think within the circumstances the social system offer. In that way human thoughts are bound by formalism. Diversity is constructed when the social systems interact with complexity in their environments. They reduce the complexity and try to present it as meaningful diversity.

Today when most of academic literature is electronically stored and is accessible through the Internet from al over the world, DAI can help social systems to observe and reduce complexity in this global dimension. It is pointed out that human consciousness is limited in handling this global dimension. Therefore is it reasonable to argue that DAI in at least this dimension has a stronger intelligence than humans have.

I will argue that Luhmann´s social theory and DAI give a god model to analyze the conditions for diversity in the Internet society. Further, the discussion about strong AI gives a lot of opportunities to discuss what sort of information literacy is needed and it also gives some perspective to discuss the concept of IL I have observed that the concept has evolved from something that coined some formal capacities, to something that has to do with a capacity to observe informal relations. That discussion can easily be compared to a parallel discussion within the debate about strong AI.

    Abstract [sv]

This is a work about the relationship between cult houses and halls. In my essay I will go through four different places were cult houses and halls both exist. I will look at the findings and the landscapes were the settlements are located in. The places I have chosen are Lunda in Södermanland, Slöinge in Halland, Uppåkra in western Skåne and Järrestad in southeast Skåne. Because of that the cult houses and halls are occurring during the late Iron Age, it is during this time period that I will work in. As a ground when I look at this, I'll use interpretations from four archaeologists who have been through and dug out the places that I have chosen.

    Abstract [sv]

Myt, ritual och konsumtion: Religionsvetenskapliga studier kring konsumism2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a study of Futurum.kom´s campaign "Lyssna dig rik". Futurum.kom is a regional marketing project between Länsbibliotek Sydost, Regionbibliotek Kalmar and 25 public libraries in the county of Blekinge, Kalmar and Kronoberg. The aim of the Futurum.kom project is to strengthen the role of the public library in society. "Lyssna dig rik" was a cluster group campaign with the aim of making people know about the possibilities of loaning audiobooks in libraries. The target group was lorry drivers in the age of 30-65 with the possibilities to listen to audiobooks at work. The analysis is based on the following issues:

 Which were the stated goals with the "Lyssna dig rik" campaign?

 Which interventions were made at the main library to achieve the stated goals with the "Lyssna dig rik" campaign?

 Which became the external results of the "Lyssna dig rik" campaign?

 In which way became the external results in the target area of the "Lyssna dig rik" campaign at the main library, an effect of the interventions of the cluster group and main library?

The method is a case study and an evaluation study mainly based on interviews with librarians and lorry drivers. The study reveals that the majority of the interviewed lorry drivers did notice the "Lyssna dig rik" campaign. They were on the other hand already aware of the fact that audiobooks are available in libraries and they didn’t change their opinions about audiobooks and libraries as a result of the campaign.

    Abstract [en]

Children's library's primary task is to encourage children to read. Promoted readingleads to increased reading skills. A common method for this purpose is booktalk. This studyaims to examine how children’s librarians work with booktalk aimed towards children andhow it can be developed as a working method to support the library's reading promotionactivities. By conducting five qualitative interviews with the intension of investigating howvarious children’s librarians within a municipality works with booktalk and by making use ofthe theoretical framework of the thesis (which consist of literacy, child perspective and AidanChambers “The Reading Circle”) we could examine development opportunities for themethod. The results of this study show that children’s librarians in the studied municipality iskeen to adapt their booktalk for its target audience reading levels but where the book is itsprimary medium. What also occurred was that the various children’s librarians have differentconditions for development, depending on their workplace but all emphasized the importanceof booktalk. In accordance with the thesis theoretical framework the importance ofconversation about books where children's participation is equal was stated as a developmentopportunity. With an emphasis that those methods just as easily could include other mediathan the printed book, with the help of a broader concept of text to reach the child's cultureand media use and consider it to be a step in the right direction when developing the booktalkas a method.
