Objektivitet och unga turkar: En kvalitativ jämförelse av två videomediers dramatiska framställning av nyheter på internet2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The ways of reaching out to the people to supply news are substantially increasing after the emerge of the Internet. Because of the Internet anyone can make their message heard. The Young Turks claims to be the largest online news show in the world and they have over 650 000 subscribers on Youtube. Therefore it is important to study how alternative media differs from more traditional media.

This study focuses on alternative journalism on Youtube. The aim of this study is to identify the difference between the Youtube channel The Young Turks and CNN. The weight in the study lays in the ways the news is being presented. This study uses qualitative content from four news videos made by The Young Turks and four news videos made by CNN. This study focuses on the specific content in a few news videos rather than the overall content in several news videos. A dramatic analysis method is used to determine how the two media channels differ.

The result shows that the news videos made by CNN used objectivity as a means to claim their professionalism more often than The Young Turks. CNN’s news reporting was also clearer in presenting sources, compared to The Young Turks.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how female and male murder perpetrators are represented in Swedish news journalism. We examined four specific murder cases, with two female and two male perpetrators, and the questions examined were: How are female and male perpetrators represented in news journalism, and what differences and similarities can be found in these representations?

We made a critical discourse analysis of 21 news articles, published between the day of the crime and the day of the verdict, from the tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen.

The result shows that female perpetrators are represented as driven by their emotions, either as victims for unrequited love or as evil, jealous women. Male perpetrators, on the contrary, are represented with attributes that are associated with masculinity. The reporting of female perpetrators is also more intense and dramatically structured.

Our study also shows similarities between perpetrators regardless of gender. They are represented as cold hearted and deviant, and the news articles are constructed almost as fiction, with sensational writing and dramatic storytelling.

    Abstract [en]

The last century shows that sport and broadcasting has evolved around men and left the women, in the dark. Even though there has been a significant movement for women in sport, the men steal the spotlight and has the sports arena to themselves. This study, a quantitative content analysis, contains published news articles from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen during the women's FIFA World Cup 2015 and the men's FIFA World Cup 2018. The objective is to examine the quantity of coverage and the representation of the Swedish women and men's national football team. This study indicates that the main coverage of the women's national team was dismally low compared to the men's national team. The study also reveals a tendency that journalists of the news articles are about four times more men than women that covers both tournaments.

Konsten att kommunicera ut två varumärken samtidigt: En retorikanalys om YouTubers upprätthållande av det personliga varumärket vid reklamsamarbeten2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Internet has created an opportunity for people to communicate with a larger audience and some internet users have become famous based on what they share on social media. These people are defined as influencers which includes people with a large group of followers on different social media platforms.

The rise of influencers has created new marketing opportunities for brands. While being exposed in influencers pictures or videos they can reach out to their target group. However, this new situation has created a rhetoric problem. The influencers must maintain their own personal brand while marketing another brand simultaneously. This study therefore aims to investigate which rhetoric techniques influencers, more specific YouTubers, use to maintain their own personal brand in the new context. While studying a marketing campaign created by United Screens for the brand Bic Soleil Bella, I did a rhetoric analysis of the YouTubers content where the product was exposed.

The result showed that the YouTubers within the study use the same rhetoric techniques as in videos where no paid marketing collaboration was involved. Some of the YouTubers also created a situation where the product becomes relevant to their own personal brand.

En retorisk utmaning i läkemedelshyllan: En studie om designbyråers visuella retoriska ramar och vägar vid formgivning av receptfria läkemedelsförpackningar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was based on visual rhetoric theory to examine how design

agencies experience the design of over-the-counter drug packaging, what challenges

they face, and with which rhetorical appeals they convince consumers, while they relate

to the non-art-related conditions, the Swedish Medical Products Agency’s regulations

(SMPA). The objective was based on previous research that has begun a discourse on

the phenomenon and that designers previously has expressed a lack of dialogue in the

graphic expression of over-the-counter drug packaging with the SMPA. To investigate

the phenomenon semi-structured interviews was conducted with six professions of five

different design agencies whose area of expertise was health and pharmaceutical

communication. The results showed that the designers' biggest challenges was to find

the balance between the visually attractive as well as the patient safe and reliable

graphic expression. The results also showed a challenge in the absence of direct

communication with the SMPA in the design process. Such communications had

facilitated the process as a dialogue for the graphic expression and its effect on a patient

safe packaging, had been possible. The elements in the design process that the

respondents considered most essential to persuade the consumers were colors and

illustrations. These elements could be widely applied without violating the rules.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitive content analysis is to examine and analyse how children are visualized in toy catalogs, depending on their gender, 2014 - 2015.

It is important to observe how advertisement maintains the gender stereotypes norms of our society, since it has a major impact on our self-image and identity. Especially when it comes to children, who absorb everything and also because it is during the childhood the socialization process begins.

It is common that toy stores and toy catalogs distinguish boy toys from girl toys, based on the toy’s colour, form and function. This phenomena has become a topic of public discussion in recent years. Therefore, the two large toy companies, BR-leksaker and Toys “R” Us, claim to have published gender neutral toy catalogs by changing the gender roles and letting boys and girls play together with the same toys.

In order to gain more knowledge of toys impact on gender roles, we studied previous research by scientist in the field of gender, e.g. Almqvist, Butler and Connell. By using a qualitative method with a semiotic perspective, we found recurrent underlying aspects in the advertisements, by the selection of twelve pictures. The studies result implies that the studied toy catalogs are not yet equal, although a certain level of progress can be ascertained. Not even the three most equal advertisements visualized girls and boys equally, because of details such as stereotypical hairstyles, accessories and clothing. Furthermore, the study shows that girls are portrayed with boy toys than vice versa, which implies that boys are to a greater extent regarded as abnormal.

"Hästtjejen som blev en styckmördare": En kvalitativ studie om representationen av en kvinnlig gärningsman i Aftonbladet och Nerikes Allehanda2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine how crime journalism relates to gender by exploring how a female perpetrator is constructed in Swedish news media. We examined a specific case where a female perpetrator murdered and dismembered her victim in Askersund, Örebro. The questions examined were; How are the female perpetrator represented in the tabloid Aftonbladet and the local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda and what are the differences and similarities between Aftonbladet’s and Nerikes Allehanda’s representation of her?

We made a discourse analysis of eighteen news articles. The result shows that the female perpetrator is represented as a non-ideal female perpetrator, a heartbroken and weak victim and an ordinary woman who suddenly transforms. Aftonbladet and Nerikes Allehanda also represent the female perpetrator as an evil and insensitive murderer and like a jealous madman. Both Aftonbladet and Nerikes Allehanda describe that the female perpetrator saw her victim as a rival.

At the beginning, mainly Nerikes Allehanda, represent the female perperator as a part of the community by representing her as a kind and innocent girl who loves horses. Then the representation is changing and the female perpetrator is represented as an intruder in the community. This representation also appears in Aftonbladet. However the tabloid mostly represents the female perpetrator with attributes like vicious, callous, jealous and mad. Our study also shows that the distance between the newspapers and the place where the crime occurred, influences the representation of the female perpetrator.

    Abstract [en]

Employers are becoming more and more aware of that the internal communication between employees is the reason why organizations are being held alive and also what impact the office environment has on employees work performances and their communication. The aim of our study was to gain an understanding of what significance an office's spatial design has for the communication between employees and managers in the workplace.

We have through qualitative interviews with managers and employees from different business cases gotten a perception of their ways of communicating with each other. The results showed that employees and leaders thought that they shared the same picture of what their communication was like in reality, how they thought their ways of marking their territory in the office was understood and respected and what their opinions and expectations of how the communication between them and their leaders should be like. These results were then analyzed in consideration with relevant theory and previous research in the disciplines of office environment and communication studies.

The main conclusions that have been drawn from the analysis are that the work environment's design can be both positive and negative at the same time and that what should be focused on is the leaders' communication. The leaders and their employees have to communicate more about their communication between them so thart misunderstandings can be avoided in the office environment - and therefore become more effective.

Lilla Aktuellt - ett program i barnens tjänst?: En kvalitativ analys av framställningen av medverkande i Lilla Aktuellt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Lilla Aktuellt is the only news show in Sweden that is directed toward children and is supposed to be at their service - producing news for them in a way that they can relate to and understand.  The aim of this study is to investigate how people that participate in interviews in Lilla Aktuellt are represented depending on their sex, age and ethnicity with the help of intersectionality, social representation and framing theories. We have tried to answer if there are any patterns in how people who participate in the news reports of Lilla Aktuellt are portrayed depending on what sex, age or ethnicity they could belong to. We also investigate what differences and similiarities that can be distinguished from the content of the show over time depending on these social categories.

We have done a critical discourse analysis on 52 news reports from the program, with half from 2004 and half from 2014. During this process we found several discourses which suggests that there is a difference in how people are portrayed dependning on the social categories mentioned above, and what subjects they get to represent in the news reports. There is also a change in what kind of news that are brought up in the programs in 2014 compared to 2004, which have lead to a difference in who gets to participate the most in the program. Our study shows that children gets a greater representation in 2014 than in 2004.

Ordet är mitt, ordet är ditt. Men är det verkligen så fritt?: En studie om det ambivalenta förhållandet mellan yttrandefrihet och religionsfrihet2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Samhällsdialog i sociala medier: Studenters inställning till kommuners kommunikation på Facebook2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The last two decades, the level of political engagement in Sweden has continued to decline, despite various projects attempting to adjust this trend that threatens to weaken the legitimacy of Swedish democracy; a participatory democracy with deliberative qualities. New studies have shown that today’s youth engage in matters regarding society, on the Internet. Can web 2.0. be the solution? A majority of Swedish municipal authorities are now seeking interaction; specifically dialogue in social media, though scholars argue the channel is used primarily for publicity and information rather than interactive dialogue.

This thesis’s key questions are the following. What attitude do students have, towards engaging in dialogue with municipalities on the latter’s Facebook pages? Which criteria must this communication meet, in order to catch their interest, furthermore promote dialogue? Lastly, would they engage in the dialogue, given these criteria are met?

The concept has been studied through a qualitative research method, focus group. Our respondent’s attitudes towards the concept where then analyzed and put into scientific context with theories argued in previous studies.

Our study shows that students would participate given their criteria where met. Issues, criteria discussed where the following. Our respondents have little faith in the municipality’s will to have dialogue, further they don’t believe they can make an impact consequently they don’t engage in the dialogue. They wished that matters discussed met their interest and that municipalities remained in main control over the communication process and that the communication form corresponds with the channel’s, Facebook’s.

    Abstract [en]

This intersectional study explores how the social constructed categories gender and ethnicity interact with each other in photos picturing Swedish athletes. The studies empirical material is collected from the sport section of the biggest Swedish tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet, and was published during the period 23rd of November, 2012 to 23rd of November, 2015. The photos has been analyzed with a semiotic analysis which establishes that there are discriminating differences in how the athletes are being portraited. The most comprehensive differences are found between the groups ethnical Swedish men and ethnical non-Swedish women.

"And the World has Somehow Shifted.": En kvantitativ studie av genuskonstruktioner i Walt Disney Pictures animerade långfilmer2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Disney princess line includes nine films, in our study we have extended this line to include the latest three films from Walt Disney Pictures that follow the same pattern. These films are Tangled (2010), Brave (2012) and Frozen (2013). We have conducted our study using the same method used by England, Descartes and Collier-Meeks (2011) in their study of the first nine films, starting with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs produced in 1937 to Princess and the Frog from 2009. A quantitative study was executed where we focused on gender role portrayal, the main characters behavioral characteristics and performed rescues. We applied the following theories to our result; the Social Constructivism, Laura Mulvey’s theory of the Male Gaze, Michel Foucault’s theory of power and discourse, intersectionality and Claude E. Shannon and Warren Weaver’s model of communication. Our result of the content coding shows a more nuanced depiction of both male and female main characters where the roles have shifted. The female main characters have been asigned a more traditionally masculine role in the films. The story in all of our three films revolves around the female main characters efforts to achieve their goals. The male main characters have abandoned their shiny armour and white horse and persued a role as the one who leads the female to her goal. A one-way analysis of variance was implemented to see differences over time in gender role portrayal of men and women. The result suggest that the male and female roles have changed over time, altough the men are those who have changed the most.

    Abstract [en]

A qualitative study of the Swedish Instagram account Kvinnohat´s framing of media criticism. The Instagram account Kvinnohat is an example when citizens with a feminist agenda participate in a public debate. With a critical point of view Kvinnohat approach society; which media is a part of. Social network with photo-sharing implement such as Instagram is a quite new type of social media. Instagram has quickly become a part of many peoples everyday life, especially among adolescents. Kvinnohat allows guest admins to do personal photo-sharing from the account Kvinnohat so that different feminist users have an opportunity to express their opinions.

We have analyzed how Kvinnohat use rhetorical strategies and frames to express their opinions about media. By analyzing the frames with help of Robert Entmans (2004) Cascading Activation Model the result of the study shows how Kvinnohat frame their content. The semiotic analysis reveals the visual rhetoric in the post and is a supplement for the rhetorical analysis in which the strategies appears.

The result of the study showed that the attitude in Kvinnohat's media criticism is both negative and positive. Kvinnohat and like-minded followers are not only consuming media but also questioning the content and the media industry. The founders of Kvinnohat often recommend their followers a positive media content where the content shows a norm critical perspective. The negative critique practiced by Kvinnohat tend to inform and educate their audience of a problem. To strengthen a relationship between Kvinnohat and its followers, Kvinnohat tend to be personal in their posts by relating to their followers, and inspire them to interact.

The main purpose of this essay was to highlight how people with disabilities are represented in the SVTplay news reports in spring 2016. Furthermore we view that representation from different kinds of perspectives to encircle the entire problem area. Our analysis is based on a critical discourse analysis, where we mainly focused on studying the text production in the news reports. Results from this analysis indicate that SVT uses a number of different names for the disabled and that these terms often distinguishes the disabled as a specific group. Further, we identified three different discourses in the text. These were Exposed and emotional, The one who can handle everything and The goal is the normal life. These discourses are showcasing a versatility in the representation of disabled people in the news media. But it also shows that SVTplay news often follows some typical stereotypical representations by including different types of relational representations and terms of use.

"Vad menar de egentligen?": En kvalitativ studie av Försäkringskassans digitalisering ur ett medborgarperspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The discussion about high culture and popular culture in our society has been going on for decades. In few places is it as loud as within culture journalism and the critics’ society, where the question of what is good taste and what is dumb entertainment constantly gets brought to the surface. Film is a particularly vulnerable area, since it is such a universally appealing and rather young medium. In America and England several studies have been performed of the reviewing society and reveiwers’ use of high and low art-discourse in their writing. The Swedish market is sorely lacking in this area.

This study is an attempt to shed some light on the way Swedish culture journalism works, with the focus being Swedish film reviews. The goal is to explore the use of high culture and popular culture discourse within Swedish reviews by examining the movie reviews published in the two large Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet in 2013. The reviews were studied using a number of variables, some of which represented the high culture discourse, and some of which represented the popular culture discourse. The study showed that the reviewers of these newspapers tended to use both high art discourse and popular culture discourse within their reviews to almost the same extent. The news papers were also very similar in the way they used the variables for high culture and popular culture discourse.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim

With this study we want to highlight and analyze the media spin of the PR campaign Miss Skinny by clarifying; a diffusion pattern which covers posts published by bloggers and journalists; a framing pattern from the first audited post to the last; how journalists are influenced by user generated content, and what consequences this may have for the news coverage.

    Method

We have conducted a studied of news posts and blog posts about the Swedish PR campaign Miss Skinny through content analysis, diffusion analysis and mapped direct links between blog posts and news posts.

    Main result

We found that a surprisingly large amount of news postings contained direct links to previous blog posts and that the former media serial no longer can be applied on today's modern media where journalists and other players come together on the converged media arena.

    Abstract [en]

On October 17, 2012, TV4 broadcasted an episode of the documentary series Kalla fakta. The episode received a lot of attention when it revealed that Parken Zoo, a very popular destination for families, was not as well maintained beneath the surface as it gave the impression of being. The case attracted attention in all possible media for a long time, which led to a beginning of an extensive investigation of the Zoo.

The purpose of this study is to examine how Parken Zoo handled the media after the examination of TV4’s Kalla fakta, and how it affected people’s confidence in the Zoo. This paper consists of an overall case study of Parken Zoo that can be divided into two different methods. One qualitative content analysis where the outcome has been developed by analyzing articles and television clips in four news media in Sweden and one quantitative survey in the form of a questionnaire study to investigate the confidence of the Zoo. Our main theories are the agenda setting theory, the principle of symmetry and Thompson theory of what a scandal is.

    Our theses are:

    • How did Parken Zoo manage media after the examination of TV4’s Kalla fakta?
    • How did this affect people’s confidence in the Zoo?

The revelation by Kalla fakta and Parken Zoo's media management both created a temporary loss of confidence for the Zoo in the public opinion. This loss of confidence may be rebuilt in the next few years on condition that Parken Zoo play their cards right.

Konstruktionen av kvinnor och män i ett modemagasin: En kvalitativ studie ur ett genusperspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how men and women were portrayed in a fashion magazine through time. Magazines convey pictures of gender through both text and image, which subconsciously affects us in the daily life.

The study examines a total of 17 reportages from the year 2008 and 2018. A critical discourse analysis constitutes the study’s methodological framework, combined with a semiotic analysis. After I separately examined men and women in the fashion magazine Damernas värld, I compared them to get a result of how the magazine portrayed the genders in different ways. The differences were relatively big in how the magazine portrayed women in 2008 and 2018. There were also a noticeable difference in how the magazine portrayed men in the different periods. The results show that the way women were portrayed in 2008, were similar to how the magazine portrayed men in 2018. There were also similarities in the portrayal of men in 2008 to women in 2018.

The result indicates that the magazine followed existing cultural gender norms in 2008, but has taken a different path in 2018.

Kaffebaristan och EU-parlamentarikern: Hur svenska dagspresstidningar gestaltade Annie Lööf och Jonas Sjöstedt i samband med deras tillträde som partiledare2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine what roles media gave women and men during the civil war in Syria. It focuses on what the Swedish news television (TV4) chose to show to the public. With the use of a qualitative analysis and tools like Fairclough CDA (critical discourse analysis) and feminism theories, this study discovered that TV4 gives stereotypical roles to the genders. Women are portrayed mostly as victims and are sourced for how the war affects them and their family. Men, on the other hand, are seen as active and warrior-like and speak to how the war affects their people beyond just their family and personal situation. These gender rolls are common, however, this analysis also relived TV4 publicizing some strong and powerful women as well.

Att skapa en hjälte: Hur media gjorde Martin Schibbye och Johan Persson till hjältar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This research examines what type of lifestyle that is communicated through the Instagram account of the company Nelly. Since previous research show that women are affected by what is shown in the media, I chose to investigate whether or not social status is communicated through Instagram accounts. More specifically, I chose to investigate Nelly's Instagram account as the company is the leader for young women in the fashion and beauty industry in Sweden. The research is a qualitative content analysis made with a semiotic approach and 16 pictures were analyzed to find symbols of social status. The result shows that social status is communicated through Nelly's Instagram account. The company not only shows their products on their Instagram account, but also symbols that indicate that you should have a feminine and luxurious lifestyle.

Vem är det egentligen som har ordet här?: En studie av Sveriges televisions Slutdebatt 1994-20102014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The final debate in Swedish television has, since it´s start 1956, been one of the most intense and important elements of the media coverage in the Swedish election campaigns. In the beginning of  1991 the Swedish television monopoly was dismissed and made way for a new situation of competing between public service and new actors of the television market.

This study explores how the final debate in Swedish public service television has changed between  1994 and 2010. This was done by studying the five debates which was broadcasted the week before the election day 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010. This study aims to provide information on how the staging and structure of the program has changed since the television monopoly was dismissed and the development of relationships and power between actors in the final debate (hosts and politicians) between 1994 and 2010.

This study was conducted using critical discourse analysis and qualitative content analysis on these five final debates retrieved from Research Service, department of audiovisual media.

The results show that the power of media has grown during this period and that the final debate has gone from being controlled by political logic to being controlled by media logic. In practice this has  led to final debates that are increased in time, simplified, and controlled by the hosts rather than the politicians.

Fallet SAS: En studie i hur medial diskurs reproducerar maktförhållanden på arbetsmarknaden2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The purpose of this study is to explore how the media through a certain discourse constructs a view of the labor market and the power relations between companies, unions and employees. The goal is to explore this through studying the media coverage of SAS’ financial situation between September-December 2012 and our research question is the following: What view of the labor market and its power relations was constructed and reproduced by Swedish newspapers through their portrayal of SAS during September-December 2012?

Method: This study analyses the findings with the help of questions based on theories of social constructivism, discourse, agenda-setting and power. A content and discourse analysis was compiled of 360 articles from five Swedish newspapers that addressed SAS and their situation from September-December 2012. The results of these analyses were further processed using power analysis and John Gaventa’s power cube.

Results: In this study we conclude that the medial discourse constructs identities of the different actors and affect power relations between them, in favor of the company. We conclude that media’s portrayal of SAS benefits the interests, wishes and ideas of the company. The company’s acts and behavior is legitimized through the identities created by the medial discourse, and the portrayal of the causes and solutions for SAS’ situation. The identities constructed enable greater legitimization on the part of the company compared to the unions or the employees. Especially since their identities restrict them in complying with the company’s demands, or else they risk being seen as perpetrators through illegitimate actions. The result of the study highlights how newspapers have great influence on different actors’ ability to act. The social practice that is affected through the medial discourse is that readers may be less inclined to join unions, as they are either seen as obstacles or as weak organisations with no real power or purpose. The solution proposed is a heightened awareness of how medial discourse affects power relations on the labor market.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how the images in the Swedish parent magazine Vi Föräldrar depicted parenthood from an equality perspective. Four issues published in 2018 were strategically selected and in order for the images to provide answers to the research questions, delimitations were made. The delimitations resulted in a sample of 44 images, that based on gender theories, were analyzed through a semiotic image analysis

The result showed that the images that depicted fathers often were presented in a playful context and the images that depicted mothers often were presented in a loving and caring context. These discoveries further clarified which elements that affected the interpretation of normative or norm breaking parenting. The study further discussed that magazines, about people addressed to people, still can be further developed in order to create a representation that gives the recipients a righteous picture of the society, from an equality perspective. In other words, a representation that don’t, through normative representations, reinforces the gender contracts.

The aim of this study was to examine pre-school teachers' experiences of how and for what purpose children at preschool Ljusstaden in Kalmar, use the tablet. The study also examined the teachers' views on the tool in that context. From a media and communication research perspective, the purpose with this study was to increase greater knowledge and understanding of children's use of the tablet in preschool in Kalmar. I chose to performe a qualitative study by conducting semistructured interviews with seven pre-school teachers at the preschool, Ljusstaden in Kalmar. The results of this study showed that it was common for the children to use the tablet in the preschool to take pictures and film and watch it afterwards and that the usage-time varied. I found that the teachers felt that the primary purpose was to follow the digital development and prepare the children for the future. I also discovered that the teachers wanted the children to continue using the tablet in the preschool Ljusstaden. In the future, the teachers wanted more education about how children can use the tablet in the best possible way.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at covering the perpetrators, victims and Sweden's society. The main issue is to examine how these categorization portrayed in the biggest newspaper in Sweden, Aftonbladet.

To conduct the survey we have used a critical discourse analysis. The empirical material consists of 55 strategically selected news articles and 127 images related to the analyzed articles.

In order to identify discourses we chose to use the following analytical concepts: We, they, include, exclude, ideal offender, ideal victim, the victims who survived and the ideal society to apply the investigation. With these concepts, we were able to identify five discourses and analyse how the perpetrators, victims, survivors and society were represented in the articles.

In our conclousion, we found out that Sweden's society gets the largest space in the news texts. The representation of the perpetrator is depicted on the basis of different time aspects. In the first insight, the suspected perpetrator is presented as a father of four children who lived in Sweden to support his family, who remained in their homeland. In the second insight he is conceived as a stranger and a insane human.

As far as the victims are concerned, they are usually reflected as saints and they are rewarded by loveful words.

Medborgare i medielandskapet: Vem får komma till tals när en nyhet gestaltas i traditionella medier versus på Flashback Forum?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The 9th March 2014, there is a clash between the Nazis and feminists around Möllevångstorget, Malmö, where four people knife damage so serious that two of them had life-threatening injuries. Many people were there and witnessed the incident but as a citizen, you will be whitened about what happened following the news reports in the media. The press reports plentiful and follow up event but then there are major differences of opinion about what actually happened and about who is actually responsible for the attack arises many questions from the public. Can you trust what is written in the media? Is journalists and their sources credible?Journalists have long been considered the fourth estate whose task is to examine the other two; the government and the parliament. Previous research suggests that the sources and actors who are given space in traditional media in a way, has power over people's interpretation of reality, a reality that the individual before the new media development has not had the same opportunities to discuss and, or question. With the emergence of new media challenged journalists' exclusive right to disseminate information and news about the present. A platform that challenges journalism is Internet-based interactive community Flashback where the audience itself may influence and create media content. When the journalists no longer have the exclusive right to define an event, who has the power over the media landscape? Who should you trust? This has consequences that are worth studying and analyzing. In our study, we approach the explanation by studying the sources which the writers use when reporting about the merits of the case. In Anders Sahlstrands doctoral thesis "Visible" presented in 2000, he notes that elite sources dominate the news media which gives a misleading picture of the society. The purpose of this study is therefore to study the sources are heard when news is portrayed by a journalist in the traditional media versus when the news is portrayed by a citizen journalist on Flashback Forum to see if there is a difference. To obtain the empirical evidence as the basis for our investigation, we conducted a quantitative content analysis. The material that will be used to conduct the quantitative content analysis consists of two parts; traditional media in the form of four daily2newspapers and a medium which falls within the "new media" for user-generated journalism; Flashback Forum. In summary, we can conclude that the answer to our main question is clear. It is predominantly elite sources which may make its voice heard when news is portrayed in traditional media and it's especially non-elite sources that sounds when a news reported on Flashback Forum. The number of elite sources and non-elite sources differ depending on which media platform is studied and also the manner, how they are heared are different depending on the platform.

Soldat - det lättaste yrket i världen: En studie av kommunikationen i Försvarsmaktens rekryteringskampanj2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Försvarsmakten -ut ur radioskuggan och in i rampljuset: En studie om hur svenska Försvarsmakten gestaltas i svenska nyhetsmedier 2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Problem: Vi ställer oss frågan hur Försvarsmaktens framställs i svenska nyhetsmedier.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is to show how the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet andDagens Nyheter reported on and described Dag Hammarskjöld as a man and a symbolat the time of his death in 1961. The method for the research has been a qualitativethematic analysis of the content in the articles published from the date ofHammarskjöld´s death to the day after the funeral. The study has been based on theoriesabout newspapers roles in the construction of imagined communities, the use of mythsand the objectifying of abstract ideas in news texts.I have found that the investigated newspapers described Dag Hammarskjöld assynonymous with the United Nations, the world peace and a hope for the future. He wasalso described as a link between the present and the past in the Swedish history at thesame time as he was described as a man of the people. He was representing“Swedishness” in an international context and the cosmopolitan. The Swedish peoplewere described as a silent anonymous group mourning a great man and a fellowcountryman. The study shows that Dag Hammarskjöld became a complex figure thatrepresented not only him self but also Swedish qualities and norms.

Ondskan går klädd i klänning eller kostym: En narrativ och semiotisk analys av Disneys kvinnliga och manliga skurkar ur ett genusperspektiv2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today there are several generations who have grown up watching Disney’s films. Disney has become a central storyteller in our society with children and their families as their main audience. Disney's storytelling is often with the children from an early age and they get to learn about right and wrong, good and evil through the films. A picture of how the world looks and how you should and should not behave is presented in Disney's films. Our aim with this study is to analyze the villains in Disney's animated films, how the female and male villains are presented in relation to each other from a gender perspective. The study's goal is to understand if the gender roles and stereotypes are enhanced or weakened by how male and female villains communicates through Disney’s films. With support from the theories of Giddens, Foucault and Jung, as well as theories of gender and stereotypes we have through a qualitative narrative and semiotic analysis studied twelve animated Disney-films. This has led to the discovery that female and male villains are produced in a gender-stereotypical way, the female villains are presented as more passive, emotional and nurturing, and that the male villains are presented as more active, ambitious and confident. We also found that there were similarities between the two genders, especially when it comes to how the antagonists exert his or her power and the atmosphere that is presented around the antagonists.

”Boobs or gtfo”: En kritisk diskursanalys av bloggar i den svenska gamingdiskursen ur ett genusperspektiv2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research in the field of gaming and the gaming culture shows that the culture is characterized by sexism and hypermasculinity, however a majority of this research is conducted in an Anglo-Saxon context. Therefore the aim of this study was to elucidate the Swedish gaming discourse in relation to gender, gendered norms and stereotypes. We also sought to examine the relationship between the editorial content and the blog comments. The study was based on a critical discourse analysis with a gender perspective, applied to five Swedish gaming blogs. By implementing power theory and encoding/decoding theory, we have concluded that there is a discursive struggle, where one part of the gaming culture is characterized by male dominance, while the other part of the discourse is showing signs of resistance to this hypermasculinity. We found that there is a gap between how gender is portrayed among the blog comments in relationship to the editorial content.

En annan Anna och Thomas nya steg: En diskursanalys av svenska nyhetstidningars förändrade framställning av Anna Holmlund och Thomas Fogdö efter funktionsnedsättningar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to examine how the media representation of elite skiers Anna Holmlund and Thomas Fogdö was altered following their accidents resulting in disabilities. In order to examine this a critical discourse analysis was performed on 16 newspaper articles from Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Göteborgs-posten, Sundsvalls Tidning and Aftonbladet, out of which eight of them had been published before the skiers respective accidents and the other eight afterwards.

The results showed that swedish newspapers shifted their focus from how the skiers performed in competitions prior to their accidents to how their bodies functioned and how they would perform everyday tasks following the accidents. We found that this would distance Holmlund and Fogdö, representing them as deviants when compared to non-disabled people. In contrast to this we found that Holmlund and Fogdö would be allowed to talk about or show their lives and bodies in great detail. This would seem to function as a way of teaching non-disabled people of what it’s like to live with a disability. Through this Holmlund and Fogdö were represented as ambassadors for the disabled collective. We also found that there was a risk of objectification which would increase in connection with a decrease in Holmlund and Fogdö’s represented ability to communicate and function as a non-disabled person does. This also appears to increase the risk of having one’s voice excluded by other people talking in one’s place.

Bevakning och framställning av flyktingar i svensk press: En studie om skillnader och likheter mellan Dagens Nyheter och Aftonbladet i bevakning och framställning av flyktingar.2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to determine how much the Swedish morning newspaper

Dagens Nyheter and the evening newspaper Aftonbladet wrote about refugees and how

they represented them during refugee crisis in September 2015 compared with when the

border control began in January 2016. The purpose is to investigate how the news

selection is been made, what events surrounding refugees became news and how they

    are described

To be able to answer these questions I have combined two methods. The quantitative

method used to observe how many articles were written about refugees, count and

analize the number of the articles each newspaper produced during the mentioned

period. In the qualitative section the rhetorical method by Karlberg & Mral's model

(1998) ethos, pathos and logos concepts been used. In order to understand how the

writer structured the text to convince the audience.

The findnings of this study has been compared by each other and the reulst has showen

a compiling differences and similarities between Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. Both

newspapers have different flow of news articles during different periods. At some stag

in the refugee crisis period in September 2015 Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet has

shown solidarity with the refugees, but during the border control period in January 2016

both newspapers monitoring and representation of refugees was not as positive and as

much as during the refugee crises.

    Abstract [en]

Recent studies show that when it comes to media exposure, men and women still face completely different conditions in how often and where they are placed in the context of news reports.

Men still stands for the vast majority of news content, and even though progress is being made it isn't going fast enough according to some and that more has to be done before we can have total equality in terms of who gets the opportunity the get their voices heard.

In this study we went in to take a closer look at how often the different sexes appears as writers on four of Swedens biggest newspapers op-ed pages. In our study we have conducted a quantitative content analysis on the op-ed pages in the for swedish papers Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. We looked on how often any of the two sexes appeared, what subjects they were writing about and what types on news the texts were discussing.

What we found where that the op-ed pages actually where almost entirely equal in terms of who got to write, and what they were writing about. Although the analysis isn't big enough to be able to tell how the situation is across all of sweden's newspaper and media content, it still gives an interesting look on how the daily newspapers works when it comes to who gets a place at the op-ed pages.

Den lyckliga vinnaren: Så gestaltas spelande för pengar i svensk kvällspress2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine in which way two Swedish tabloid newspapers, Aftonbladet and Expressen, most commonly frame gambling in the news coverage on their websites in a time when research reveals that it has become increasingly harder to determine what is journalistic material and what is advertisement. At the same time, gambling companies have taken over a large part of the advertising space at Swedish tabloid websites. There has, in its extent, been done insufficient research within the journalistic field of news coverage when it comes to gambling and this study seeks to fill in some of the investigative blanks. In order to analyze how frames emerge from the news coverage we collected articles from a six-month period, as close to the initiation of the study as possible, by using eight different words or short phrases that led to the total empirical data of 302 news articles. Methodologically the study uses quantitative content analysis mainly based on the theory of framing. Furthermore, we also apply the theoretical aspects of agenda setting and news selection. The result clearly shows that the Swedish tabloid newspapers frame gambling in a positive and non-problematic way and there is a remarkable over representation of articles that are based on what we call “the happy winner frame”. In the conclusion we discuss both social and media related implications of the newspapers way of framing gambling in their online news coverage. We also offer a couple of propositions for future research within this field of medial science.

    Abstract [en]

Today’s media consumption and viewing behavior has led to an expansion in the marketand resulted in a media convergence. The competition gets fiercer with each player andthe outcome for the linear TV channels has to be to change in some way. This is aqualitative interview study with producers at Sweden’s leading children channel“Barnkanalen”, how they experience the adoption to this new media landscape. Tocollect data for this study I conducted seven individual interviews with one memberfrom each department of the channel. The study showed that Barnkanalen do not have aclear strategy on how to navigate in the new media landscape. Those who work atBarnkanalen believe that the web offers a possibility to interact with their viewers, though they have not yet made it clear as to how to achieve this. I have also found thatthe employees at Barnkanalen see the increasing competition as diffuse and they aretherefore developing a strategy on how to keep their position as Sweden’s leadingchildren channel with all the new players in the market. To do this they first need tounderstand what a TV show is today and what kind of content should be distributed onthe new platforms.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate the communication between exchange students and their host student trough Facebook. The study shows the importance of social cues and self-disclosure to maintain a relationship. The students’ everyday use of Facebook helps them to remain connected to their social life locally and create new friendships. Cultural differences were shown in the way the students formed their expressions trough their messages to each other. Although the cultural differences weren’t that big, the students understood the context of being in contact with a person from another cultural background. The students thought the cultural differences weren’t anything of importance, the main reason to communicate though Facebook was to understand each other no matter the cultural context. To have an intercultural friendship on Facebook can help the students to have a contact network outside their own country.

The two research question for this thesis are following:

    -       How can communication between exchange students and host student’s intercultural relationship be interconnected trough Facebook?

    -       How does the intercultural friendship on Facebook affect the exchange student and host student’s communication process?

The answer showed that through Facebook there is a common culture, which the group of students has created. In this way the study also shows that the students got trust in Facebook of the creating and maintaining of an intercultural friendship.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how the Swedish local newspaper Skånska Dagbladet portrays therural places of Sweden. The purpose is to see how the Swedish countryside is portrayedby a rural newspaper, as opposed to an urban newspaper. The study is based on thepaper Landsbygd i medieskugga (Rural areas in the Shadow of the Media)It is a quantitative study that both examine the differences in coverage between theurban municipalities and the rural municipalities, but also examines differences in thecountryside between the main village and the more rural areas. 18 papers from 3different weeks spread out over the year were examined. Every text on news placeconcerning the 17 municipalities that Skånska Dagbladet covers were counted andsorted. Then 4 municipalities; Eslöv, Hörby, Sjöbo and Ystad, were selected as ruralmunicipalities and further examined. The study finds that there are few differences in topic between city and countryside.Crime and accidents are the greatest subject in both places. Second biggest topic isamusement. The countryside municipalities have one news text more per day. There is abalance between reporting possibilities and reporting problems. The characters thatappear the most in the articles are people in a position of power. However, the ordinarycitizen is more likely to be the main character in a text.It is suggested that more studies are needed on what it is that determines if a journalistleaves the newsroom to write a news story. Studies of the patterns of the allocation ofnews subjects are also needed.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to show who the most common participants of the debates in the Swedish press are, when it comes to gender, social status and the subjects that are debated. To investigate this, a quantitative content analysis was used, counting and analysing all the debate articles from ten swedish newspapers between 1st April 2018 and 31st May 2018. There were 723 articles included in our study, and debate articles that were replies to other debates and those which were less than 1500 digits were excluded.

The articles were analysed according to their length, which newspaper they came from, what gender the debator had, what the subject of the debate was, the actuality of the debate and the debators social status.

The result of the study shows that men are more frequently appearing in the debates than women, and the most common debator in the Swedish press is a politician that debates politics and political proposals. It also shows that men and women tend to debate different subjects, as men are more frequent debators in subjects like trade and industry, international affairs and immigration, and women are more frequent when it comes to healthcare, education and environmental issues.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine pictures from the swedish morning newspaper Barometern regarding their publication about the summer drought 2018 on two of theirplatforms; the ordinary printed newspaper and their Instagram account.

The purpose of the study was to track down if there were any obvious differences aboutthe pictures that Barometern publishes in their printed newspaper and Instagramaccount. This study was conducted through a quantitative analysis with help of ancoding scheme.

A delimitation was made to investigate only the publications during the four summermonths may, june, july and august. This limit was necessary with the reason to give ourstudy a relevant starting point.

The result of this essay shows that in the printed version of the newspaper are they morelikely to publish pictures about the summer drought, as in the Instagram account arethey more likely to publish pictures with a positive vibe instead. A another conclusionwith this study is that almost half of the pictures that Barometern published about thesummer drought is manipulated in some way.

    Abstract [en]

Who is the most typical woman in ELLE Sweden (2013)? In this study we investigated the typical woman represented in the Swedish fashion magazine ELLE (2013) for women. Does a typical woman exist in the magazine at all and if so – in what words and roles is she described in? How is this woman perceived in relation to the male gender? Based on the theory of constructionism; that the gender (i.e. What is female versus male) is constructed in the society and that media has an affect on our physical and psychological well being as well as our behavior and thoughts, the investigation of the female gender representation in women magazines, was of great importance to us. As our instrument in this study we used a quantitative content analysis in the purpose of gathering information from 24 reportages (12 issues of ELLE Sweden 2013) where 27 female celebrities in total were interviewed. According to our final results there is a very clear and typical representation of the woman in ELLE Sweden. Among other things she is a successful, white, western, career woman in the entertainment- or fashion industry who is ”beautiful” with blonde hair, lives in the city and admirers the opposite sex.
