    Abstract [en]

    Aim

With this study we want to highlight and analyze the media spin of the PR campaign Miss Skinny by clarifying; a diffusion pattern which covers posts published by bloggers and journalists; a framing pattern from the first audited post to the last; how journalists are influenced by user generated content, and what consequences this may have for the news coverage.

    Method

We have conducted a studied of news posts and blog posts about the Swedish PR campaign Miss Skinny through content analysis, diffusion analysis and mapped direct links between blog posts and news posts.

    Main result

We found that a surprisingly large amount of news postings contained direct links to previous blog posts and that the former media serial no longer can be applied on today's modern media where journalists and other players come together on the converged media arena.

    Abstract [en]

On October 17, 2012, TV4 broadcasted an episode of the documentary series Kalla fakta. The episode received a lot of attention when it revealed that Parken Zoo, a very popular destination for families, was not as well maintained beneath the surface as it gave the impression of being. The case attracted attention in all possible media for a long time, which led to a beginning of an extensive investigation of the Zoo.

The purpose of this study is to examine how Parken Zoo handled the media after the examination of TV4’s Kalla fakta, and how it affected people’s confidence in the Zoo. This paper consists of an overall case study of Parken Zoo that can be divided into two different methods. One qualitative content analysis where the outcome has been developed by analyzing articles and television clips in four news media in Sweden and one quantitative survey in the form of a questionnaire study to investigate the confidence of the Zoo. Our main theories are the agenda setting theory, the principle of symmetry and Thompson theory of what a scandal is.

    Our theses are:

    • How did Parken Zoo manage media after the examination of TV4’s Kalla fakta?
    • How did this affect people’s confidence in the Zoo?

The revelation by Kalla fakta and Parken Zoo's media management both created a temporary loss of confidence for the Zoo in the public opinion. This loss of confidence may be rebuilt in the next few years on condition that Parken Zoo play their cards right.

Konstruktionen av kvinnor och män i ett modemagasin: En kvalitativ studie ur ett genusperspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how men and women were portrayed in a fashion magazine through time. Magazines convey pictures of gender through both text and image, which subconsciously affects us in the daily life.

The study examines a total of 17 reportages from the year 2008 and 2018. A critical discourse analysis constitutes the study’s methodological framework, combined with a semiotic analysis. After I separately examined men and women in the fashion magazine Damernas värld, I compared them to get a result of how the magazine portrayed the genders in different ways. The differences were relatively big in how the magazine portrayed women in 2008 and 2018. There were also a noticeable difference in how the magazine portrayed men in the different periods. The results show that the way women were portrayed in 2008, were similar to how the magazine portrayed men in 2018. There were also similarities in the portrayal of men in 2008 to women in 2018.

The result indicates that the magazine followed existing cultural gender norms in 2008, but has taken a different path in 2018.

Kaffebaristan och EU-parlamentarikern: Hur svenska dagspresstidningar gestaltade Annie Lööf och Jonas Sjöstedt i samband med deras tillträde som partiledare2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine what roles media gave women and men during the civil war in Syria. It focuses on what the Swedish news television (TV4) chose to show to the public. With the use of a qualitative analysis and tools like Fairclough CDA (critical discourse analysis) and feminism theories, this study discovered that TV4 gives stereotypical roles to the genders. Women are portrayed mostly as victims and are sourced for how the war affects them and their family. Men, on the other hand, are seen as active and warrior-like and speak to how the war affects their people beyond just their family and personal situation. These gender rolls are common, however, this analysis also relived TV4 publicizing some strong and powerful women as well.

Att skapa en hjälte: Hur media gjorde Martin Schibbye och Johan Persson till hjältar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This research examines what type of lifestyle that is communicated through the Instagram account of the company Nelly. Since previous research show that women are affected by what is shown in the media, I chose to investigate whether or not social status is communicated through Instagram accounts. More specifically, I chose to investigate Nelly's Instagram account as the company is the leader for young women in the fashion and beauty industry in Sweden. The research is a qualitative content analysis made with a semiotic approach and 16 pictures were analyzed to find symbols of social status. The result shows that social status is communicated through Nelly's Instagram account. The company not only shows their products on their Instagram account, but also symbols that indicate that you should have a feminine and luxurious lifestyle.

Vem är det egentligen som har ordet här?: En studie av Sveriges televisions Slutdebatt 1994-20102014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The final debate in Swedish television has, since it´s start 1956, been one of the most intense and important elements of the media coverage in the Swedish election campaigns. In the beginning of  1991 the Swedish television monopoly was dismissed and made way for a new situation of competing between public service and new actors of the television market.

This study explores how the final debate in Swedish public service television has changed between  1994 and 2010. This was done by studying the five debates which was broadcasted the week before the election day 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010. This study aims to provide information on how the staging and structure of the program has changed since the television monopoly was dismissed and the development of relationships and power between actors in the final debate (hosts and politicians) between 1994 and 2010.

This study was conducted using critical discourse analysis and qualitative content analysis on these five final debates retrieved from Research Service, department of audiovisual media.

The results show that the power of media has grown during this period and that the final debate has gone from being controlled by political logic to being controlled by media logic. In practice this has  led to final debates that are increased in time, simplified, and controlled by the hosts rather than the politicians.

Fallet SAS: En studie i hur medial diskurs reproducerar maktförhållanden på arbetsmarknaden2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The purpose of this study is to explore how the media through a certain discourse constructs a view of the labor market and the power relations between companies, unions and employees. The goal is to explore this through studying the media coverage of SAS’ financial situation between September-December 2012 and our research question is the following: What view of the labor market and its power relations was constructed and reproduced by Swedish newspapers through their portrayal of SAS during September-December 2012?

Method: This study analyses the findings with the help of questions based on theories of social constructivism, discourse, agenda-setting and power. A content and discourse analysis was compiled of 360 articles from five Swedish newspapers that addressed SAS and their situation from September-December 2012. The results of these analyses were further processed using power analysis and John Gaventa’s power cube.

Results: In this study we conclude that the medial discourse constructs identities of the different actors and affect power relations between them, in favor of the company. We conclude that media’s portrayal of SAS benefits the interests, wishes and ideas of the company. The company’s acts and behavior is legitimized through the identities created by the medial discourse, and the portrayal of the causes and solutions for SAS’ situation. The identities constructed enable greater legitimization on the part of the company compared to the unions or the employees. Especially since their identities restrict them in complying with the company’s demands, or else they risk being seen as perpetrators through illegitimate actions. The result of the study highlights how newspapers have great influence on different actors’ ability to act. The social practice that is affected through the medial discourse is that readers may be less inclined to join unions, as they are either seen as obstacles or as weak organisations with no real power or purpose. The solution proposed is a heightened awareness of how medial discourse affects power relations on the labor market.

Den lekfulla pappan och den omsorgsfulla mamman: En kvalitativ bildanalys av tidningen Vi Föräldrar ur ett genusperspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how the images in the Swedish parent magazine Vi Föräldrar depicted parenthood from an equality perspective. Four issues published in 2018 were strategically selected and in order for the images to provide answers to the research questions, delimitations were made. The delimitations resulted in a sample of 44 images, that based on gender theories, were analyzed through a semiotic image analysis

The result showed that the images that depicted fathers often were presented in a playful context and the images that depicted mothers often were presented in a loving and caring context. These discoveries further clarified which elements that affected the interpretation of normative or norm breaking parenting. The study further discussed that magazines, about people addressed to people, still can be further developed in order to create a representation that gives the recipients a righteous picture of the society, from an equality perspective. In other words, a representation that don’t, through normative representations, reinforces the gender contracts.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine pre-school teachers' experiences of how and for what purpose children at preschool Ljusstaden in Kalmar, use the tablet. The study also examined the teachers' views on the tool in that context. From a media and communication research perspective, the purpose with this study was to increase greater knowledge and understanding of children's use of the tablet in preschool in Kalmar. I chose to performe a qualitative study by conducting semistructured interviews with seven pre-school teachers at the preschool, Ljusstaden in Kalmar. The results of this study showed that it was common for the children to use the tablet in the preschool to take pictures and film and watch it afterwards and that the usage-time varied. I found that the teachers felt that the primary purpose was to follow the digital development and prepare the children for the future. I also discovered that the teachers wanted the children to continue using the tablet in the preschool Ljusstaden. In the future, the teachers wanted more education about how children can use the tablet in the best possible way.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at covering the perpetrators, victims and Sweden's society. The main issue is to examine how these categorization portrayed in the biggest newspaper in Sweden, Aftonbladet.

To conduct the survey we have used a critical discourse analysis. The empirical material consists of 55 strategically selected news articles and 127 images related to the analyzed articles.

In order to identify discourses we chose to use the following analytical concepts: We, they, include, exclude, ideal offender, ideal victim, the victims who survived and the ideal society to apply the investigation. With these concepts, we were able to identify five discourses and analyse how the perpetrators, victims, survivors and society were represented in the articles.

In our conclousion, we found out that Sweden's society gets the largest space in the news texts. The representation of the perpetrator is depicted on the basis of different time aspects. In the first insight, the suspected perpetrator is presented as a father of four children who lived in Sweden to support his family, who remained in their homeland. In the second insight he is conceived as a stranger and a insane human.

As far as the victims are concerned, they are usually reflected as saints and they are rewarded by loveful words.

Medborgare i medielandskapet: Vem får komma till tals när en nyhet gestaltas i traditionella medier versus på Flashback Forum?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The 9th March 2014, there is a clash between the Nazis and feminists around Möllevångstorget, Malmö, where four people knife damage so serious that two of them had life-threatening injuries. Many people were there and witnessed the incident but as a citizen, you will be whitened about what happened following the news reports in the media. The press reports plentiful and follow up event but then there are major differences of opinion about what actually happened and about who is actually responsible for the attack arises many questions from the public. Can you trust what is written in the media? Is journalists and their sources credible?Journalists have long been considered the fourth estate whose task is to examine the other two; the government and the parliament. Previous research suggests that the sources and actors who are given space in traditional media in a way, has power over people's interpretation of reality, a reality that the individual before the new media development has not had the same opportunities to discuss and, or question. With the emergence of new media challenged journalists' exclusive right to disseminate information and news about the present. A platform that challenges journalism is Internet-based interactive community Flashback where the audience itself may influence and create media content. When the journalists no longer have the exclusive right to define an event, who has the power over the media landscape? Who should you trust? This has consequences that are worth studying and analyzing. In our study, we approach the explanation by studying the sources which the writers use when reporting about the merits of the case. In Anders Sahlstrands doctoral thesis "Visible" presented in 2000, he notes that elite sources dominate the news media which gives a misleading picture of the society. The purpose of this study is therefore to study the sources are heard when news is portrayed by a journalist in the traditional media versus when the news is portrayed by a citizen journalist on Flashback Forum to see if there is a difference. To obtain the empirical evidence as the basis for our investigation, we conducted a quantitative content analysis. The material that will be used to conduct the quantitative content analysis consists of two parts; traditional media in the form of four daily2newspapers and a medium which falls within the "new media" for user-generated journalism; Flashback Forum. In summary, we can conclude that the answer to our main question is clear. It is predominantly elite sources which may make its voice heard when news is portrayed in traditional media and it's especially non-elite sources that sounds when a news reported on Flashback Forum. The number of elite sources and non-elite sources differ depending on which media platform is studied and also the manner, how they are heared are different depending on the platform.

Soldat - det lättaste yrket i världen: En studie av kommunikationen i Försvarsmaktens rekryteringskampanj2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Försvarsmakten -ut ur radioskuggan och in i rampljuset: En studie om hur svenska Försvarsmakten gestaltas i svenska nyhetsmedier 2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Problem: Vi ställer oss frågan hur Försvarsmaktens framställs i svenska nyhetsmedier.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is to show how the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet andDagens Nyheter reported on and described Dag Hammarskjöld as a man and a symbolat the time of his death in 1961. The method for the research has been a qualitativethematic analysis of the content in the articles published from the date ofHammarskjöld´s death to the day after the funeral. The study has been based on theoriesabout newspapers roles in the construction of imagined communities, the use of mythsand the objectifying of abstract ideas in news texts.I have found that the investigated newspapers described Dag Hammarskjöld assynonymous with the United Nations, the world peace and a hope for the future. He wasalso described as a link between the present and the past in the Swedish history at thesame time as he was described as a man of the people. He was representing“Swedishness” in an international context and the cosmopolitan. The Swedish peoplewere described as a silent anonymous group mourning a great man and a fellowcountryman. The study shows that Dag Hammarskjöld became a complex figure thatrepresented not only him self but also Swedish qualities and norms.

    Abstract [en]

Today there are several generations who have grown up watching Disney’s films. Disney has become a central storyteller in our society with children and their families as their main audience. Disney's storytelling is often with the children from an early age and they get to learn about right and wrong, good and evil through the films. A picture of how the world looks and how you should and should not behave is presented in Disney's films. Our aim with this study is to analyze the villains in Disney's animated films, how the female and male villains are presented in relation to each other from a gender perspective. The study's goal is to understand if the gender roles and stereotypes are enhanced or weakened by how male and female villains communicates through Disney’s films. With support from the theories of Giddens, Foucault and Jung, as well as theories of gender and stereotypes we have through a qualitative narrative and semiotic analysis studied twelve animated Disney-films. This has led to the discovery that female and male villains are produced in a gender-stereotypical way, the female villains are presented as more passive, emotional and nurturing, and that the male villains are presented as more active, ambitious and confident. We also found that there were similarities between the two genders, especially when it comes to how the antagonists exert his or her power and the atmosphere that is presented around the antagonists.

”Boobs or gtfo”: En kritisk diskursanalys av bloggar i den svenska gamingdiskursen ur ett genusperspektiv2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research in the field of gaming and the gaming culture shows that the culture is characterized by sexism and hypermasculinity, however a majority of this research is conducted in an Anglo-Saxon context. Therefore the aim of this study was to elucidate the Swedish gaming discourse in relation to gender, gendered norms and stereotypes. We also sought to examine the relationship between the editorial content and the blog comments. The study was based on a critical discourse analysis with a gender perspective, applied to five Swedish gaming blogs. By implementing power theory and encoding/decoding theory, we have concluded that there is a discursive struggle, where one part of the gaming culture is characterized by male dominance, while the other part of the discourse is showing signs of resistance to this hypermasculinity. We found that there is a gap between how gender is portrayed among the blog comments in relationship to the editorial content.

En annan Anna och Thomas nya steg: En diskursanalys av svenska nyhetstidningars förändrade framställning av Anna Holmlund och Thomas Fogdö efter funktionsnedsättningar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to examine how the media representation of elite skiers Anna Holmlund and Thomas Fogdö was altered following their accidents resulting in disabilities. In order to examine this a critical discourse analysis was performed on 16 newspaper articles from Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Göteborgs-posten, Sundsvalls Tidning and Aftonbladet, out of which eight of them had been published before the skiers respective accidents and the other eight afterwards.

The results showed that swedish newspapers shifted their focus from how the skiers performed in competitions prior to their accidents to how their bodies functioned and how they would perform everyday tasks following the accidents. We found that this would distance Holmlund and Fogdö, representing them as deviants when compared to non-disabled people. In contrast to this we found that Holmlund and Fogdö would be allowed to talk about or show their lives and bodies in great detail. This would seem to function as a way of teaching non-disabled people of what it’s like to live with a disability. Through this Holmlund and Fogdö were represented as ambassadors for the disabled collective. We also found that there was a risk of objectification which would increase in connection with a decrease in Holmlund and Fogdö’s represented ability to communicate and function as a non-disabled person does. This also appears to increase the risk of having one’s voice excluded by other people talking in one’s place.

    Abstract [en]

Recent studies show that when it comes to media exposure, men and women still face completely different conditions in how often and where they are placed in the context of news reports.

Men still stands for the vast majority of news content, and even though progress is being made it isn't going fast enough according to some and that more has to be done before we can have total equality in terms of who gets the opportunity the get their voices heard.

In this study we went in to take a closer look at how often the different sexes appears as writers on four of Swedens biggest newspapers op-ed pages. In our study we have conducted a quantitative content analysis on the op-ed pages in the for swedish papers Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. We looked on how often any of the two sexes appeared, what subjects they were writing about and what types on news the texts were discussing.

What we found where that the op-ed pages actually where almost entirely equal in terms of who got to write, and what they were writing about. Although the analysis isn't big enough to be able to tell how the situation is across all of sweden's newspaper and media content, it still gives an interesting look on how the daily newspapers works when it comes to who gets a place at the op-ed pages.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine in which way two Swedish tabloid newspapers, Aftonbladet and Expressen, most commonly frame gambling in the news coverage on their websites in a time when research reveals that it has become increasingly harder to determine what is journalistic material and what is advertisement. At the same time, gambling companies have taken over a large part of the advertising space at Swedish tabloid websites. There has, in its extent, been done insufficient research within the journalistic field of news coverage when it comes to gambling and this study seeks to fill in some of the investigative blanks. In order to analyze how frames emerge from the news coverage we collected articles from a six-month period, as close to the initiation of the study as possible, by using eight different words or short phrases that led to the total empirical data of 302 news articles. Methodologically the study uses quantitative content analysis mainly based on the theory of framing. Furthermore, we also apply the theoretical aspects of agenda setting and news selection. The result clearly shows that the Swedish tabloid newspapers frame gambling in a positive and non-problematic way and there is a remarkable over representation of articles that are based on what we call “the happy winner frame”. In the conclusion we discuss both social and media related implications of the newspapers way of framing gambling in their online news coverage. We also offer a couple of propositions for future research within this field of medial science.

    Abstract [en]

Today’s media consumption and viewing behavior has led to an expansion in the marketand resulted in a media convergence. The competition gets fiercer with each player andthe outcome for the linear TV channels has to be to change in some way. This is aqualitative interview study with producers at Sweden’s leading children channel“Barnkanalen”, how they experience the adoption to this new media landscape. Tocollect data for this study I conducted seven individual interviews with one memberfrom each department of the channel. The study showed that Barnkanalen do not have aclear strategy on how to navigate in the new media landscape. Those who work atBarnkanalen believe that the web offers a possibility to interact with their viewers, though they have not yet made it clear as to how to achieve this. I have also found thatthe employees at Barnkanalen see the increasing competition as diffuse and they aretherefore developing a strategy on how to keep their position as Sweden’s leadingchildren channel with all the new players in the market. To do this they first need tounderstand what a TV show is today and what kind of content should be distributed onthe new platforms.

Interkulturell vänskap på Facebook: Kvalitativ undersökning om kommunikationsprocessen mellan utbytesstudenter och värdstudenter2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate the communication between exchange students and their host student trough Facebook. The study shows the importance of social cues and self-disclosure to maintain a relationship. The students’ everyday use of Facebook helps them to remain connected to their social life locally and create new friendships. Cultural differences were shown in the way the students formed their expressions trough their messages to each other. Although the cultural differences weren’t that big, the students understood the context of being in contact with a person from another cultural background. The students thought the cultural differences weren’t anything of importance, the main reason to communicate though Facebook was to understand each other no matter the cultural context. To have an intercultural friendship on Facebook can help the students to have a contact network outside their own country.

The two research question for this thesis are following:

    -       How can communication between exchange students and host student’s intercultural relationship be interconnected trough Facebook?

    -       How does the intercultural friendship on Facebook affect the exchange student and host student’s communication process?

The answer showed that through Facebook there is a common culture, which the group of students has created. In this way the study also shows that the students got trust in Facebook of the creating and maintaining of an intercultural friendship.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how the Swedish local newspaper Skånska Dagbladet portrays therural places of Sweden. The purpose is to see how the Swedish countryside is portrayedby a rural newspaper, as opposed to an urban newspaper. The study is based on thepaper Landsbygd i medieskugga (Rural areas in the Shadow of the Media)It is a quantitative study that both examine the differences in coverage between theurban municipalities and the rural municipalities, but also examines differences in thecountryside between the main village and the more rural areas. 18 papers from 3different weeks spread out over the year were examined. Every text on news placeconcerning the 17 municipalities that Skånska Dagbladet covers were counted andsorted. Then 4 municipalities; Eslöv, Hörby, Sjöbo and Ystad, were selected as ruralmunicipalities and further examined. The study finds that there are few differences in topic between city and countryside.Crime and accidents are the greatest subject in both places. Second biggest topic isamusement. The countryside municipalities have one news text more per day. There is abalance between reporting possibilities and reporting problems. The characters thatappear the most in the articles are people in a position of power. However, the ordinarycitizen is more likely to be the main character in a text.It is suggested that more studies are needed on what it is that determines if a journalistleaves the newsroom to write a news story. Studies of the patterns of the allocation ofnews subjects are also needed.

Vem får delta i debatten?: En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av debattsidor i svensk press.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to show who the most common participants of the debates in the Swedish press are, when it comes to gender, social status and the subjects that are debated. To investigate this, a quantitative content analysis was used, counting and analysing all the debate articles from ten swedish newspapers between 1st April 2018 and 31st May 2018. There were 723 articles included in our study, and debate articles that were replies to other debates and those which were less than 1500 digits were excluded.

The articles were analysed according to their length, which newspaper they came from, what gender the debator had, what the subject of the debate was, the actuality of the debate and the debators social status.

The result of the study shows that men are more frequently appearing in the debates than women, and the most common debator in the Swedish press is a politician that debates politics and political proposals. It also shows that men and women tend to debate different subjects, as men are more frequent debators in subjects like trade and industry, international affairs and immigration, and women are more frequent when it comes to healthcare, education and environmental issues.

The aim of this study was to examine pictures from the swedish morning newspaper Barometern regarding their publication about the summer drought 2018 on two of theirplatforms; the ordinary printed newspaper and their Instagram account.

The purpose of the study was to track down if there were any obvious differences aboutthe pictures that Barometern publishes in their printed newspaper and Instagramaccount. This study was conducted through a quantitative analysis with help of ancoding scheme.

A delimitation was made to investigate only the publications during the four summermonths may, june, july and august. This limit was necessary with the reason to give ourstudy a relevant starting point.

The result of this essay shows that in the printed version of the newspaper are they morelikely to publish pictures about the summer drought, as in the Instagram account arethey more likely to publish pictures with a positive vibe instead. A another conclusionwith this study is that almost half of the pictures that Barometern published about thesummer drought is manipulated in some way.

    Abstract [en]

Who is the most typical woman in ELLE Sweden (2013)? In this study we investigated the typical woman represented in the Swedish fashion magazine ELLE (2013) for women. Does a typical woman exist in the magazine at all and if so – in what words and roles is she described in? How is this woman perceived in relation to the male gender? Based on the theory of constructionism; that the gender (i.e. What is female versus male) is constructed in the society and that media has an affect on our physical and psychological well being as well as our behavior and thoughts, the investigation of the female gender representation in women magazines, was of great importance to us. As our instrument in this study we used a quantitative content analysis in the purpose of gathering information from 24 reportages (12 issues of ELLE Sweden 2013) where 27 female celebrities in total were interviewed. According to our final results there is a very clear and typical representation of the woman in ELLE Sweden. Among other things she is a successful, white, western, career woman in the entertainment- or fashion industry who is ”beautiful” with blonde hair, lives in the city and admirers the opposite sex.

Even though lots of social media companies do not utilize all the information collected by the end-users today, no one knows what type of information they may want in the future. Accepting an End-User License Agreement (EULA) may imply that the company has the permission to gather any personal information, without having to ask for the end-users permission again as the information is already being stored in the database of the company. Young women is today one of the groups that is sharing, publishing and consuming the most information on social media. For that reason it is intreguing to study how young women are relating to the personal integrity on social media. The study concludes that there is a wide variation of how the women relates to integrity on the social media.

E-snuten: En studie av myndigheters informalisering på sociala medier2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

It is through the material that is presented to us by the media, that we form our perception of the world and our opinions about it. Therefore the framing of news is important to study, especially in our globalized world where the economy, politics and communication has a strong connection. Earlier studies have shown that there is a general fascination in Sweden for the United States, which not only have influenced popular culture, but also other parts of the Swedish society like news coverage. Some even say that Sweden is the most americanized country in the world. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine if Swedish news are being more americanized than news coverage in other parts of the world. Through a qualitative framing analysis this study examines which frames that occurs in news articles related to the american elections Super Tuesdays in newspapers from Sweden, Kenya and Singapore. The result of this study shows that the news coverage in many respects portrays the election in a similar, entertaining way, which can be assumed to be due to the americanization of news. However, there is no clear evidence that the Swedish news coverage would be more americanized than the Kenyan and Singaporean.

"Ja hade de haft en brandvarnare så hade det inte hänt": Svenska kommuners kriskommunikationsanpassning till personer med utländsk bakgrund.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Makten över samhällsdebatten: En fallstudie över relationen mellan traditionella nyhetsmedier och sociala medier2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Authors: Linda Olsson & Dennis Åström Title: A journey of discovery on the third floor – A case study in how juvenile agents in the municipality of Kalmar communicate with its young people Level: BA Thesis in Media and Communication Studies Location: Linnaeus University Language: Swedish Number of pages: 60

Introduction: The participation amongst young people regarding political, democratic and society related questions is through an investigation confirmed not being high enough. Within the municipality of Kalmar, juvenile agents work as a link between young people and the opportunities that the municipality provides. To create this link with young people, communication is essential.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to create an understanding of how the juvenile agents work in order to create and maintain communication with young people. The purpose is also to evaluate the result of the information campaign they executed in 2011.

Methodology: For this paper we had a hermeneutic approach with an inductive viewpoint. In our qualitative research we gathered our empirical material by doing qualitative interviews and the respondents were chosen based on both their knowledge in the subject of youth related questions and also the results of the information campaign in 2011.

Conclusion: Within the process of creating and maintaining communication with young people, we can see that the juvenile agents strive to become a strong link between them and young people. The obstacle they stand in front of, as we see it, is that the creation of communication is achieved in a bigger extent than the maintaining of communication.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish right-wing party the Sweden Democrats gathered much attention during the Swedish general election of 2010. The party’s immigration policy clashed with other major Swedish parties perceptions and the Sweden Democrats got major coverage in Swedish media even before the election had taken place. Despite controvercies surrounding the party, they eventually succeeded in getting into the parliament.

This study explores how the coverage of the Sweden Democrats in five large Swedish newspapers has changed between 2009 and 2013. This was done by studying two periods, each period taking place a year before the next general election. This study aims to provide information on how reporting may change due to factors such as the subject, in this case the Sweden Democrats, gaining political power.

The study was conducted using quantitive content analysis on a total of 402 articles retrieved from Mediearkivet.

The result shows that negative reporting regarding the Sweden Democrats has been diminished after the party made their way into the parliament. It also shows that although the coverage of the party has been increased since the election of 2010, the party is also less likely to be the main subject of the articles in which it is mentioned. This study explores the normalization of a controversial party in a democracy.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to examine how the two Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter portrayed the actions of Russia, Vladimir Putin, Nato and their allies and Ukraine in the conflict surrounding the sovereignty of Crimea that started in 2014.Our study was based on 18 news articles from the start of the conflict up to august of 2015.The results showed that Russia is portrayed as the villian of the conflict. Aftonbladet portrayed the nation as a threat to Sweden and the rest of the western countries. Both papers tended to treat Russian sources with distrust, often choosing to interview Swedish experts on Russia rather than citing Russian sources. Vladimir Putin was portrayed as an evil dictator who set his own interests first and foremost. Both papers drew parallels between Putins way of ruling with the style of leadership in Soviet Russia. In both Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter, Nato and their allies actions are portrayed as self defence towards Russia. Their actions are justified and always put in a perspective towards the actions of the Russians. The nation of Ukraine are initially portrayed as victims of Russian aggression. A few months into the conflict the newspapers started to become more critical of the Ukrainian actions, but always put it into perspective towards russian actions. Our study shows that swedish media holds a critical view towards Russia and their actions.

Utformningstypens inverkan på reaktionen av politiska inlägg: En studie av politisk kommunikation på Facebook2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The politicians have entered a new platform with the potential to democratization and to exchange ideas. Therefore, we want to look into what new conditions social media creates for politicians. Through strategic political communication the goal-oriented two-way communication is depicted as it is crucial for relations to establish, build up, maintain and to be affected.

One aspect of this is about the creation of messages and the visual communication affecting the meaning of the content. In our study, these theories have become the foundation in the research, and of the tools used when developing messages for social networks. We have looked deeper into Facebook as a social media and political parties on this platform. We focused on and observed their different ways of developing messages in their Facebook feed and the reactions they generated. We found tendencies saying that pictures and videos have a great effect on a engagement generated in the posts. This proves that visual communication is a crucial tool for political strategic communications within the networks of social media.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how journalistic content can be affected when a local newspapers website changes its business model to what is commonly known as a premium paywall.

This study is based upon data provided by the local newspaper Barometern. The data concerns the number of online articles included in fifteen subject and geographically defined categories. The data was collected from two three month long periods, one before and one after the introduction of the news paper paywall that was installed in October of 2014.

The study finds that the total number of articles published after the introduction of the paywall was significantly higher than before but that the share of articles included in the different subject categories did not change considerably for paying readers. For non- paying readers however, the data show that the share of articles for the different subject and geographical categories changed significantly.

Even though the data from this study cannot confirm a correlation, it does highlight a possible connection between media competition in different local markets and subject matters and the amount of articles that are placed behind the newspapers online paywall in that category. This means that non-paying readers in this case got access to a large number of articles included in some categories and only a small portion of articles included in some other categories. Non-paying readers not only got access to a smaller number of articles but also to a different content profile than paying readers.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to look into the approach of swedish journalists towards Twitter and how they apply the media ethics when using Twitter.

The method for this research was a survey answered by 371 Swedish journalists, from workplaces of various contents and geographical spread, of which 271 were users of Twitter. Our results are based on the survey and theories such as the social responsibility theory, the code of ethics for the Swedish press, radio and television, gatekeeping, normalizing twitter and the private sphere of Habermas.

Our results showed that swedish journalists aim to apply the media etics in most aspects such as objectivity and gatekeeping. Also the guidelines of using twitter as a journalist, according to the respondents, mainly comes from the workplace and not the code of ethics. It also showed that the majority of the journalists were pleased with the current guidelines, or the absence of guidelines.

Migration between politics, journalism and PR: new conditions for power, citizenship and democracy?2014In: Nordicom Review, ISSN 1403-1108, E-ISSN 2001-5119, Vol. 35, no Special issue, p. 141-153Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we present a preliminary theoretical background and some empirical findings concerning a migrating trend between the fields of politics, PR and journalism: one day a political reporter, the next a communication officer; one day a PR consultant, the next a state secretary. To understand contemporary politics one must, we argue, comprehend the convergence between three fields of power holders that together form the realm of politics and communication: elite politicians, elite political reporters and elite communication/PR officers. Together, they form a communication elite that sets the parameters for the public discourse on politics. When politics is produced and constructed in, and through, social networks formed by elite agents from politics, journalism and PR, what does this mean for how democracy is worked out and what does it mean for citizenship in general?

Mördaren som blev ett offer: En kvalitativ framinganalys om Kaj Linna i Piteå-Tidningen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our focus in this study was to examine how Piteå-Tidningen produced Kaj Linna, the man who was accused and later convicted for murder. In addition to the frames we could distinguish about the perpetrator we also examined the small community, Kalamark, were the murder occured. In the next step of our analysis we examined how he was produced when he was declared innocent. We did this by applying a framing-analysis on 35 articles from Piteå-tidningen that covered the events that occured 2004 and 2017.

The frames we could identify from Piteå-Tidningen that described Kaj Linna 2004 was as an odd man, a man without no stable income and a man with money as his motivitaton. The community was framed as the victims, who stood together in sorrow and in despair. Kaj Linna got excluded and the community of Kalamark got included in the frames we identified.

The turning point in 2017, when Kaj Linna was declared innocent and was set to become a free man the frames changed. He was framed as a family man, a man with feelings that had people caring about him. Like a man who was one of us. He was included in 2017. The frames about the community in 2017 was hard to find as the focus of reporting about the case exclusively was about Kaj Linna.

    Abstract [en]

The goal with this study is twofold. On one hand it is an examination of strategic communication development and distribution in the Swedish elite soccer league; how the internal communication has developed and increased the organizational identity within organizations. On the other hand it is a study of professionalizing of communicators and the awareness of the impact of good communication in Swedish football clubs. This study aims to contribute to an unexplored area within Swedish football research and to investigate and analyze how football clubs conveys a desired identity, community and commitment through internal communication.

The implementation of the study has been done in two different ways. Firstly, we examined relevant research on organizational communication, strategic communication, internal communication and organizational identity. Second, we have conducted interviews with people who are familiar with the Swedish elite clubs.

After examine and analyzing what football clubs thinks about strategic communication and how they think they are working today with organizational identity, relationship management and internal communication we saw some patterns between the work they put in to it and the resources they have access to. We interviewed eight persons from the elite league Allsvenskan and clubs with different resources and number of supporters and as a result we could clearly see flaws in the work with internal communication in and organizational identity.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how people act and respond to the different aspects given/experienced when using social media platforms. The investigation is a qualitive study based on eight interviews with media-students aged between 23 to 25 at the Linneaus university, Sweden. The theoretical frame of the study is founded on the theory of Goffmans studies regarding the presentation of self.

The investigation shows that the respondents act acordingly to the different roles as described by Goffman, althogh there´s a difference when compared to common face-to-face interaction since the option to choose which impressions to give is bigger when interacting through social media channels.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to increase awareness of the portrayal of refugees in Swedish media. In order to achieve this we performed a content analysis of the articles found in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Through a strategic selection we chose six news articles published during the fall of 2015 that depicted various refugees’ destinies. We studied the articles in several steps and identified the frames used in the presentation and portayal of the refugees. These frames consisted of roles, characteristics and selected quotations in which the persons were assigned. In the analyzed articles we found that Dagens Nyheter tends to portray refugees in a relatively generalized way, where different categories of refugees are similarly portayed and no refugee gets the role of a hero. They are portrayed in a way that makes them look like they are subordinate to aid organisations and authorities and as if they are in need of help. However, children and elderly tend to be discriminated since they in many cases are being excluded or assigned a subordinate role compared to other categories of refugees.

Mördade flickors offerstatus: En studie om journalistikens gestaltning av unga kvinnliga mordoffer beroende på relationen till gärningsmannen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine how two young female victims was represented in Swedish commercial news press, if and how their relations to the perpetrator would affect their representation and what similarities and differences there were in the representation between the two. We examined the coverage of Lisa Holm, who was murdered by a stranger, and Tova Moberg, who was murdered by her abusing ex- boyfriend.

The method used was a critical discourse analysis. We searched for different discourse themes in a total of twelve news articles from Aftonbladet and Expressen. We analyzed the themes and came to the conclusion that the murder victims were represented very much alike, well-liked, ambitious and good-hearted. The main difference is that Tova Moberg was not represented as innocent as Lisa Holm by the journalism because of her relationship with her ex-boyfriend. The journalism partly blamed Tova Moberg for not preventing her own death since she was aware of the danger.

We found that as soon as any kind of relations between the victim and perpetrator was mentioned the victim’s status as an ideal victim decreased.

Genus på hjul: En tredimensionell textanalys av det svenska skateboardmagasinet Giftorm2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Historically skateboarding has mainly been practiced by male riders whilst female riders has been a rare sight. The purpose of our study was to examine how skateboarding, as a subculture based on innovation and progress, could be stationary regarding gender, one of present times most debated and significant subjects. Therefore we analyzed Giftorm, a swedish magazine that ́s highly relevant for the subculture in Sweden. Our questions revolved around how gender roles were constructed in this magazine, which stereotypes we could find and how these constructions and stereotypes varied within the magazines different parts. We used a threedimensional analysis model which allowed us to read signs on three different levels. Textually, contextually and sociohistorically. To be able to interpret these signs we derived from cultural studies, semiotics and gender research. At the end of the thesis we came to the conclusion that men and women were more or less constructed in the same manner. However, the male gender and masculine ideals are still dominating the discourse and therefore valued higher. We observed tendencies of how skateboarding is moving towards equality, but we suggest that further research should be made to verify this trend.
