Att undervisa i informationssökning: En kvalitativ studie om hur skolbibliotekarier undervisar i informationssökning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

One of the goals in the curriculum is that the students in junior high schools must know how to seek information and how to do critical evaluations. Therefore is the aim of this bachelor thesis to examine how the school librarian work with teaching in information seeking in junior high schools. The theoretical framework that has been used is based on Limberg & Folkssons project IDOL ́s five categories. The data has collected through qualitative interviews with three school librarians in three different junior high schools in Sweden. The results shows that school librarians teach information seeking by talk about source criticism, sources, information queries, the importance of verifying information and to teach different search tips. The lessons usally was based on a basic presentation about information seeking and source criticism. The school librarian was even a part of bigger school project to teach information seeking and to support the students when they seek information. The conclusions is that this is helpful to know because the schools mission is to learn the students to be reflecting individuals. It is important that school librarians and teachers work together in this process and to contribute with each unique expertice in teaching information seeking. It is also important to support and welcome the students to the library when they need more help with information seeking.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

    Metod:

    Nyckelord:

    ensamhet, hälsa, livstillfredsställelse, äldre.

    Abstract [en]

There is often a relationship between perception and production in second language acquisition, depending on phonological transfer from the speaker’s first language (L1). In a production study of Karen speakers learning Swedish as their second language (L2) it appears that they have difficulties learning the pronunciation of Swedish, especially final stops. In order to find out if Karen speakers perceive phonological contrasts in Swedish words produced by a Swedish native speaker, a perception test was constructed. The results indicate a phonological transfer from L1 to L2. Another observation is the role of age during second language acquisition.

Vowel length contrast and word stress in Somali-accented Swedish2014In: COPAL Concordia Working Papers in Applied Linguistics: Proceedings New Sounds 2013, 2014, Vol. 5, p. 771-782Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years the situation on the Horn of Africa has meant that the number of people in Sweden whose mother tongue is Somali has increased. To better understand the specific difficulties for Somali speakers when learning Swedish as a second language, we need more knowledge about the differences as well as similarities between the two languages. Although there is a vowel length contrast in both languages, this study shows that speakers with Somali L1 have difficulty distinguishing between long and short vowels and consonants in the syllable in Swedish words, which makes native listeners confused. When producing minimal pairs with distinctive lexical word stress the L2‐learners do not use the same cues as native speakers, namely duration and pitch. These findings are important for the development of pedagogical strategies when teaching Somali speakers Swedish as their second language.

Elevtexter på flerspråkiga elevers olika språk2017In: Språk och norm : Rapport från ASLA:s symposium, Uppsala universitet 21–22 april 2016: [ Language and norms : Papers from the ASLA Symposium at Uppsala University 21-22 April, 2016 ] / [ed] Saga Bendegard, Ulla Melander Marttala, Maria Westman, Uppsala: Association suédoise de linguistique appliquée, ASLA , 2017, Vol. 26, p. 178-186Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Earwitnesses: The effect of type of vocal differences on correct identification and confidence accuracy2012In: The International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law, ISSN 1748-8885, Vol. 19, no 2, p. 219-237Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Individual voice and speech characteristics are important for earwitness identification. A target-absent line-up with six foils was used to analyse the influence of voice andspeech features on recognition. To create ecologically valid conditions for voice recognition, the present study used voices in conversation in the target event and for the foils. The participants were particularly successful in rejecting the two voice foils that weremost dissimilar to the target voice in articulation rate and pitch. These two foils werealso given somewhat higher confidence judgments than the other foils, although the levelof that confidence was still somewhat low. In fact, participants as a collective wereunderconfident for these two foils but were overconfident for the other foils. In addition, they showed somewhat better ability in their confidence judgments to distinguish correctand incorrect responses for the two most dissimilar foils than for the four foils for whichtheir identification responses were less successful. For the other four foils, which weremore similar to the target voice, the participants showed in their confidence judgmentsvery poor ability to distinguish between correct and incorrect identifications. Laterpositions in the parade were more often (erroneously) identified as the culprit, regardlessof the specific foils used in those positions.

    Isaac and Jesus: A Rabbinic Re-appropriation of a “Christian” Motif?2016In: Journal of Jewish studies, ISSN 0022-2097, E-ISSN 2056-6689, Vol. 67, no 1, p. 102-120Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

If, as recent scholarly insights suggest, adherence to Jesus was a largely intra-Jewish affair during the first few centuries CE, it increases the likelihood of interaction and exchange of ideas between such Jesus-oriented Jews and Jews of other inclinations. This article argues that the motif of the atoning power of the death of the beloved son – developed within first-century Judaism, as evidenced by Paul and the Gospels, and embraced by Jesus-oriented groups – was later reappropriated by Rabbinic Judaism through interaction with Jesus-oriented groups with a Jewish self-identity, and applied by Rabbinic Jews to Isaac. The presence of the aqedah motif in synagogues from the third to six centuries may testify to the reappropriation by non-Jesus-oriented Jews of the motif of the atoning power of the death of the beloved son, and possibly also to the presence and impact of Jesus-oriented groups or individuals in the synagogue of late antiquity.

Jesus-Oriented Visions of Judaism in Antiquity2016In: Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis, ISSN 0582-3226, Vol. 27: Jewish Studies in the Nordic Countries Today, p. 37-60Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitions 1.27–72, the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies, and the Didascalia Apostolorum – third and fourth century-texts, which combine adherence to Jesus with Jewish law observance – would have made sense to Jews in antiquity as Jewish, although non-rabbinic visions of the history and calling of the people of Israel, and that they ought to be considered as part of the history of Judaism. Recent years have witnessed an emerging trend to reread texts previously regarded as ‘Jewish-Christian’ or ‘heretical Christian’ as Jewish texts, and as evidence of diversity within Judaism in the post-70 period. This understanding emerges from the related insights that rabbinic Judaism was not the only, or even the dominant form of Judaism during the early centuries ce, that there was no definitive early split between a well defined Christianity and an equally well defined Judaism, and that Jewish self-identity in antiquity seems to have allowed for adherence to Jesus as an option within Judaism. Abandoning the practice of using rabbinic Judaism as the sole criterion for defining Jewishness in this time period allows us to see the theologies developed by such Jesus-oriented groups with a Jewish self-identity as profoundly Jewish, although non-rabbinic, visions of the history and calling of biblical Israel.

Are the Physiological and Digital Systems Converging?: Exploring the relation between humans and mobile technologies.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis has its starting point in the digitalization of society focusing on the rapid development of mobile technologies and the increasing interplay between humans and machines. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is extending at a fast pace, affecting all parts of society, and the everyday life of most individuals. The fast progressing development of mobile technologies (smartphones and their accessories/ wearable’s) is creating new trends such as health tracking and quantified self. These mobile technologies can register an increasing number of physiological features, implying that the interconnection between the physiological and digital systems is increasing. This creates a range of new possibilities within health and medical research but it also creates new challenges and the need for new knowledge in how we relate these devices to our bodies. In the psychological perspective, smartphone use is increasing and previous studies imply that these devices are affecting our behaviour, our mental health as well as our cognitive functions. This implies for a need to understand the relation we have to these devices also in a psychological perspective, focusing on emotions and cognition. This study set out to explore the relation between humans and technologies from a systems perspective. The research question involved: How are users and smartphones related in physical and psychological perspectives? The methods used were questionnaires and interviews. The respondents were students in two European universities, who described their experiences of smartphone use, and three doctors (in medicine and biomedicine) that provided interesting aspects in how mobile technologies can be related to the human body from a system perspective

In a physical perspective the users as well as their physical environments could be described as converging with the digital systems. The need of being connected and have access to all life-spheres at once seemed to be an important driving force, implying that users are dependent on information and a converged life-style. In a psychological perspective, the emotional bond seemed stronger then the actual physical need. The perceptions of smartphones differed, but a common denominator described by both Swedish and Albanian users, was the perception of the smartphone as something with human-like features, comparable to a friend. The last part of the study concerned if smartphones can be seen as a new entity of our own system, comparable to an organ. The result suggests that this depends on the individual use, if the technologies is used to sustain health, the value it provides, and it is also a matter of the users ontological believes. The concept of physio-digital convergence is proposed as a new concept to analyse the development of increasing use of mobile technologies further.

Bilden av Island - den sista vildmarken2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The last years trends of increasing globalisation and the decreasing importance of the nationstate has led to rising flows of travellers and information throughout the globe. This has affected the competition between destinations; they are now competing in a global market. The importance of placemarketing and representing a place identity, is today essential to attract customers from around the world. The purpose of this essay was to examine how Iceland as a place is represented through the photographs in horse tourism. The research questions asked were: How is the Icelandic landscape represented in photographs? How is people and horses represented in the landscape? And how can the horse be analysed as a part of the Icelandic landscape? The method used for research was image-analysis, a qualitative approach where horse tourism-websites and photographs on these websites were strategically selected. Theories used to analyse the result were concepts like place, nature and wilderness, described as social constructions. The research showed that Iceland as a place is represented through a selection of myths. The role of the Icelandic landscape might be explained as a dichotomy of two contrasting representations, the dramatic and untamed landscape, and the idyllic and romantic landscape. The Icelandic horse is represented as a powerful, mythological, and divine creature, interacting with humans but not fully tamed. It is also represented as free, wild and a part of the Icelandic nature. In the photographs people are represented as active in an adventure. They become integrated with nature by the connection to the Icelandic horse. In conclusion this study shows that Iceland is represented as a place with a powerful and romantic landscape. Where people can get access to nature by the horse, they become part of an adventure but they never fully control either the horses or the landscape. People are depicted as humble participants, being part of something more powerful then themselves, the great Icelandic nature.

Physio-digital Convergence: Aspects on Security2016In: Proceedings of 7th International Conference Information Systems and Technology Innovations: the New Paradigm for a Smarter Economy / [ed] Kozeta Sevrani, Tirana: University of Tirana , 2016, article id 1Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The fast progressing development of mobile technologies and health applications has given rise to trends like health tracking and quantify self. This kind of mobile health applications can measure an increasing amount of physiological parameters, which implies an increasing interconnectivity between users and mobile technologies. An explorative pre-study was made which studied the relation between users and mobile technologies on students in Sweden and Albania. The results imply an increasing interconnectivity between users and mobile technologies and this can be considered as both a physical and psychological phenomenon. From a system perspective the physiological and digital systems can be seen as converging, driven by both technical innovations and user behavior. This blurring of system boundaries requires for reflections within philosophy and ethics as well as security and integrity. The concept of Physio-digital convergence is proposed as a perspective to further analyze this development. Recommendations on further research include integrity and security issues, which are both pointed out as critical aspects in this context.

Technology Mediated Nudging in a Mobile Health Context2018In: UBT International Conference 2018, UBT Knowledge Center , 2018, p. 1-6Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

According to a vision for eHealth launched in 2016 by the Swedish Government, Sweden will be leading the way in using the potential of digitalization and eHealth to help people achieve a good and equal health. To achieve this vision, we argue that initiatives in eHealth need to augment a health promotion perspective. This implies a more preventive approach that transforms the health concept to a continuous participative process over the life course. A stronger emphasis on consumer technologies is needed to understand how interaction with web based and mobile systems may affect health related choices, and how to empower people to pursue a healthy lifestyle. A topic of particular significance is how mobile applications may utilize the theoretical principles for behavior change. In this context, it is relevant to analyze how nudges can be implemented in a mobile context. We propose that more research is needed in this area.

Kvinnors erfarenheter efter att ha haft en hjärtinfarkt2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund

    Abstract [en]

There is research from several different perspectives that have studied the critical success factors regarding to project work. The problem is that there is not a specific project transact to achieve success in projects. Belassi and Tukel (1996) has developed a theory that can be used to analyze the implementation of projects. The theory needs to evolve over time and change in order to adapt to specific types of projects such as internal IT projects that this study addresses. In this study a case study carried out in two organizations where each one of them consist one internal IT project that is considered successful and one that is considered a failure. Based on Belassi and Tukels (1996) theory Critical success/failure factors into projects, qualitative interviews were conducted in order to determine which success factors that are critical to the success and failure of internal IT projects. Furthermore, the aim is also to see if there are other critical success factors that can develop the theory. The collected empirical data was analyzed by categorization and the results of this study show which the critical success factors is in the internal IT projects. A new model was created and developed with critical success and failure factors that did not exist in the previously mentioned theory but which turned out to have an impact on the project results. The study showed that leadership and communication were key factors in achieving successful projects. It also turned out that not only was the project participants' technical backround important to project success but also other skills of the individuals. In cases where it is not perceived as an evaluation was made most of the informants said that it would have been good if it had been done. Project participants' skills and evaluation of the realization of the project was therefore, together with external suppliers and user support, factors that were chosen to be supplemented in the refined model. The project team commitment are already addressed in Belassi and Tukels (1996) theory, but it is emphasized in the survey that the commitment should be objective.

Hälso- och sjukvårdspersonals attityder gentemot personer med fetma2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: People suffering from obesity are constantly increasing and have globally more than doubled since 1980. Since obesity often leads to comorbidity, this patient group is getting more common in health care settings. This means higher demands on health care professionals´ attitudes towards obese individuals.

Purpose: To enlight health care professionals´ attitudes towards obese individuals and to the care they are offered.

Method: A systematic literature review, that was primarily based on Kristenssons (2014) description of its methodology.

Results: This literature review identified two categories; attitudes towards obese individuals and attitudes concerning obese individuals´ care. Both positive and negative attitudes were found among health care professionals, e.g. obese individuals were described with negative attributes as lazy, selfish and unattractive. Attitudes that the obese individuals had low motivation and low willpower were seen as well. An example of positive attitudes were that empathy for obese individuals occurred.

Conclusion: To encounter negative attitudes among health care professionals, it is important to be aware of  one´s own and others´ attitudes. This enables a process of reflection that might lead to changed attitudes. Negative attitudes workes as barriers for an effective weight loss.

Bekräfta, returnera, störa: Subversiva affirmationer i Arvida Byströms Inflated Fiction2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Beekeepers usage of IoT: Data collection, sharing and visualization in the domain of beekeeping.2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis is exploring Beekeepers usage of Internet of Things, or “Internet of Bees”.

Since most of the prior contributions are focusing on data gathering, the approach to focus on the users needs is central to take next steps in the field of using IoT for Beekeeping.

After the introduction a chapter with an overview of current research and commercial solutions are presented. This is followed by a quantitative study with 222 responds, answering what beekeepers like to know about their bees, what platforms used by end users and what the beekeeper as a user expects.

An demo of an existing commercial system is set up in real conditions, describing how to mount and configure a demo. Communication, synchronization and presentation is described. A closed user interface and a public user interface are a part of the demonstration. Potential users of this technique are interviewed to gain better understanding of users opinion of the demo. This is followed by another demo using a free of charge app where sound analysis processed with AI is tested.

This thesis explains what beekeepers as users of Internet of Things could gain added value to their beekeeping.

Ute eller inte?: Hur pedagoger i förskolan ser på utomhuspedagogik2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Demand for Sexual Services: and its Effects on the Prevalence of Human Trafficking in Sweden2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Human trafficking is a global problem that has an effect on international, national and local contexts. Every year, hundreds if women are being transported to Sweden for the purpose of sexual exploitation. The international document by the UN, the Palermo Protocol, establishes a distinct concept of human trafficking and calls on all member states to contribute with an effective counteraction to the problem. However, the demand for prostitution as a cause of the prevalence of human trafficking or how the counteraction is supposed to be conducted is not mentioned in the protocol.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and explain the connection between prostitution and human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation in Sweden with a focus on the demand, investigate who stands behind the demand and reasons for the purchases of sexual services along with distinguishing what measures are advocated for to decrease the demand for prostitution in the country. The thesis is conducted through collected material from various relevant governmental organisations concerned with the issue, while the analytical framework is built upon approaches of abolitionism and regulation.

The demand is considered to be the very cornerstone to the prevalence of prostitution which in itself is claimed to be, if not caused by human trafficking, the very expression of violence and inequality. Many sex purchasers distinguish prostitution from human trafficking, expressing their certainty of being able to identify when they meet someone who is subjected to trafficking – in reality it was found that they are not aware of the indicators of trafficking which is close to invisible. Resources needs to be targeted towards the concerned authorities and the education and awareness needs to be enhance both within authorities but also in the general public.

Är orsaker till partibildning en partisk historia?: En kvalitativ studie om politiska partiers motiveringar kring partibildning2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this essay is to examine the motivation of political parties on their reason of formation. To execute, three perspectives on the formation of parties will be applied on the sequence of events for two specific party-formations. Those perspectives are the structural-, organisationtheoretical-, and actorcentralized perspective. The focus in this essay will be to determine the power of explanation for every perspective. “Kristdemokraterna” and “Feministiskt initiativ” are the parties chosen to be examined in this essay.

The result revealed that the power of explanation also was according to the order the perspectives were presented above. The structural perspective had the highest power of explanation while the actorcentralized had the lowest. Interestingly the result did not concur with previous studies on the formation of political parties. Though, earlier studies had targeted different material.

The weakness of the actorcentralized perspective might have its explanation in the assumption that parties does not want to make individuals greater than the organization. To much focus on the individual could undermine the actual purpose of the party. Another interesting discovery was the possibility to combine the different perspectives, as they did not rule out each other as explanations.

Vad har hänt med barns sångröster från millennieskiftet fram till idag?: En studie om barnrösters utveckling enligt tre barnkörledare och hur dessa arbetar med barns sångröster.2015Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    C1q recognizes antigen-bound IgG in a curvature-dependent manner2020In: Nano Reseach, ISSN 1998-0124, E-ISSN 1998-0000, p. 1-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

C1q is an important recognition protein in the complement system, which is a major protein cascade in the innate immune system. Upon recognition of a target by C1q, the target is marked for opsonization and destruction. C1q recognizes many pathogenic patterns directly, but an important target is the Fc domain of antibodies binding to their antigen. In this paper, the curvature-dependence of the interaction between IgG and C1q is studied by surface plasmon resonance and quartz crystal microbalance. IgG is organized in similar surface coverage densities on flat polystyrene surfaces and polystyrene nanoparticles of different sizes, and the amount of C1q binding to the IgG is investigated. Nanoparticles in solution were found to aggregate upon incubation with IgG, and therefore a new technique utilizing nanoparticles binding to antifouling polymer brush functionalized surfaces was used to prepare surfaces with nanoparticles for measurements with surface plasmon resonance. Interestingly antigen-bound IgG at the curved surface of nanoparticles showed 5.6 times lower binding of C1q compared to at matched flat surfaces. There was no significant difference between the binding at 100 and 200 nm polystyrene particles. These findings are important for designing drug delivery systems to evade the complement system.
