Kvinnliga och Manliga sysslor: - En undersökning utifrån de fem bäst sålda bilderböckerna skrivna av Astrid Lindgren2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

AbstractThe purpose of this essay was to study women’s and men’s place in the room, the public room or the private room, in the five best sold picture books written by Astrid Lindgren and the analysis was done with a feministic perspective. A lot of children read Astrid Lindgren’s picture books and therefore this might influence what’s female and masculine. The five best sold picture books written by Astrid Lindgren is: 1) Känner du Pippi Långstrump 2) Den där Emil 3)Visst kan Lotta cykla 4) Nils Karlsson-Pyssling flyttar in 5) Kajsa Kavat hjälper mormor. The women and the men on the pictures in these books was analysed through the categories “female” “masculine” or “neutral”. In the essay there are quotes from each book in order to show the reader what the characters in each book were doing and how they did it. Feminism developed during the late 1900th century to the year 1920 as well as during the 1960s and the 1970s. Feministic geographers want to approve the life of women and they focus on gender. Gender is the cultural differences between women and men. Every individual is born with a biological sex, either female or male, and through this biological sex feminine and masculine is developed. Masculine is not necessary connected with a man’s body, masculine could be connected to a women’s body as well, likewise when it comes to feminine. This is the case with Pippi Långstrump, she has the biological female sex but in the picture book she’s more masculine than feminine. Therefore, this book is the only book of these five picture books where the woman is out of the ordinary women’s standard. The women in the picture books Kajsa Kavat hjälper mormor, Den Där Emil and Visst kan Lotta cykla are working inside the home, in the private room, while the men in these books are working in the public room. The women in these books are doing typical female chores such as cooking, cleaning and taking care of old people and kids. In Nils Karlsson-Pyssling flyttar in the woman is working outside the house together with her husband in order to support her family. But this woman is never seen in one of the pictures in the book but she is mentioned in the text.

Konstpedagogik i skolan och på museum: En jämförande studie av två pedagogiska praktiker2013Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor’s thesis purpose is to examine how library staff experiences the meeting with non-Swedish speaking users of public libraries, and how they solve different situations. Today there is not much research on this subject but we find these questions important to study because we think it is good to be aware of the situations that can arise and discuss how to solve any problems. To have a basis for this qualitative study we conducted group interviews with library staff, where they are asked about their experiences with non-Swedish speaking users. In the analysis the results of the interviews are compared to previous research and related to communication theory, which is the theoretical framework for this study. In order to clarify how the barriers for communication affect the meeting a barrier model is applied.

After the analysis a discussion follows, where the term “non-Swedish speaking” is reasoned about, as well as the question whether it is possible to deal with all user groups equally. Finally the conclusions are presented. Our findings are among others that meeting with non-Swedish speaking users where the library staff has difficulties with understanding their intentions occur every day. Many of the informants believe that language can create barriers, which can lead to a meeting of poor quality. Body language is considered a great asset in communication when the verbal language is not enough. Additional solutions may be to cooperate with colleagues or other users in the library, but it is also important to be imaginative and flexible to make the communication work and to make the experience of the meeting as good as possible.

    Abstract [sv]

Kreativitet: En undersökning om fyra bildlärares syn på begreppet kreativitet2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Digital delaktighet: folkbibliotekens undervisande roll i kampanjen Digidel2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis the pragmatic pedagogy as formulatad by John Dewey is applied to theswedish national campaign Digidel and its work to spread the digital participation among thegeneral public. The purpose of the thesis is to visualize and problematize that differentunderstandings of a problem, lead to different solutions, as lifted in John Dewey´s pedagogy, thatconstitutes the thesis' theoretical framework. The term digital participation is used by the Digidelcampaign, where public libraries take active part to spread digital participation througheducational efforts. By qualitative interviews with four librarians this thesis examines howunderstandings of the term may vary and in turn lead to differenent educational goals, designsand executions. The result shows that basic computer- and Internetskills are seen as either equelto or prerequisites for digital participation and that the digital participant is seen as either apassive recipient or an active participant. The informants all advocate indivdual teaching, although they have different educational goals. The result also shows how technology andpedagogy are linked to individuals, not the profession, accordning to the informants.

Historiesyn, nationalism och vetenskap2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The title of this study is: The Swedish assimilation of Scania during the period 1658-1720 - In descriptions of Danish and Swedish popular historians` during 20th century to current view. View of history, nationalism and science .

The study concerns the Swedish, after the conquest of Scania 1658, attempts to induce feelings of Swedish nationality to the people in former Danish province of Scania 1658-1720. The goal of this study was to analyze 20th century and present Swedish and Danish historians’ descriptions of the Swedish and Danish treatment of the native Scania population. The aim was further to describe this historians` view of native rebellious group called “snapphanar” and which measures were taken to assimilate the Scanian population to Swedish realm. Lastly, the historians view above concerning a presence of a native Scanian regional or national identity was studied.

I studied writings of three popular historians from Denmark and from Sweden respectively. To compensate for the influence of nationalism on historiography, sources from three periods during the 20th and the current century was used.

In the attempt to reach these main goals I have analyzed the authors’ books and the Swedish and Danish versions of the website Wikipedia.

All the popular historians´ mean that the people of Scania felt national identity, except Åberg which mean that they also had a regional identity. The Swedish scholarship had a big influence of making the native population citizens of the Swedish crown. Also the punishment had a big impact, which mainly affected the partisan group called snapphanar. This is in detail described by Wikipedia. 20th century Danish popular historians` describe the abuses on the natives by the Swedish realm while the Swedish historians mostly describe snapphanars rubies on them.

Vikten av att välkomna alla: Hur arbetet med integrering uppfattas av fyra bibliotekarier på tre bibliotek i Stockholm2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My purpose with this essay is to look at how librarians, who work with immigrants every day, look upon their own purpose to further integration. I also look how they work with program activities and how that may improve integration. In the survey 4 librarians from 3 different libraries, who work mainly with integration and immigrants as a user group, are interviewed. The results show that work with program activities are useful for integration because it offers a way to participate in dialog and interaction with other people. However, the librarians think that it is possible to make every activity in the library to further integration.

    Abstract [en]

Being a student in the educational system is in itself a challenging exercise, considering the various parts that may matter in different extent for the students. There is a syllabus, there are different backgrounds and contexts for each student and there is also the knowledge in the subject to consider. This study sets out to explore to which extent teachers and students reflect about the transition from public school to upper secondary school/high school, specifically in the context of History as subject. What do they think about it and how do they work with it?

By interviewing five teachers and letting 94 students in upper secondary school completing a survey about this subject (the transition), I can conclude that the matter is complex, both for students and teachers, however still a significant and important issue to discuss. The teachers shows tendencies in favouring the chronological time line as educational instrument, while implementing the eventual lack of such time line in the public school. Still they have none or little insight in the syllabuses for the public school, raising yet another issue – to what extent should teachers care for syllabuses which they don’t, formally, have to recognize as part of their assignments as upper secondary school teachers? The teachers are generally aware of the difficulty that the transition implies and the students are neither overwhelmingly satisfied nor dissatisfied, which means that work could and should be done to ensure an education that is easing the students way to knowledge.

Indianen och kalla kriget: Audiovisuella representationer av kalla kriget 1965-19862011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The similarity between the Russian and the Indian, in a Cold War context, may be ambiguous considering the ethnic-social variables and the period in time from where the Indians relate. However, by analyzing these, as well as other, characters in the exhibition of movies, we could learn something about the ideology of the time from which the movies derive.

This study examines ideology and movies in the Cold War era and concludes that the Indian, for example, may be representing the values of the common public enemy, originating from the Cold War ideology. The movies examined, regardless of influence of distinct Cold War themes or lack of such themes, carry attributes that give evidence of typical Cold War ideology. The fear of communism and common enemies connected to a Cold War context, the thought of America as the land of the free – with the horizon in the ending of the movies as metaphoric to freedom – and the moral rhetoric that connects to the American thought of a duty as a global savior, are all signs of the Cold War ideology.

Even though the messages are somewhat clearer and more distinct in the movies with Cold War motifs, the fact that ideology is projected through other movies as well should be considered essential for the continuing study of movies as cultural artefacts.

Den mänskliga kameleonten: En studie av fotografisk självframställning i postmodern tid2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

No matter what subject or which grade you are active in, the teachers in Sweden have incommon that they are provided with governing documents that states the guidelines and goalsregarding each subject. Along with these governing documents every teacher has to findmaterial that will be used as the foundation of the teaching. This thesis is a study of howSwedish history teachers define what material they are going to use in their teaching, andwhich the factors are that is affecting these choices. The question whether a child’s ethnicaland cultural background is a factor that affects this choice of material is concerned, as well aswhat is current in Sweden and the world. In July 2012 Lgr 11 was introduced, and for acouple of years it will be coexisting with Lpo 94. This thesis therefore takes place in a contextwhere there are two curriculums in effect. That gives an opportunity to analyze potentialdifferences these two amongst regarding how the teacher chooses the material to be used intheir history education.

P3-Soundet!: Den statliga ungdomsradions musik2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Edward Said's book Orientalism (1978) is the most important reference point in the post-colonial theory and describes how the West is dominant over the Orient. There is a clear distinction between "us" and "the other" and the purpose of this study is that, from a postcolonial perspective, focusing on Said's theoretical concepts "the other" and "discourse", examining how two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds living in the same place, are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes. My questions to answer this are; “what are the concepts of "the other" and "discourse" and is it possible to use these concepts to examine how foreign-born people are looking at themselves, at other foreign-born and native Swedes in a specific location?”, “who is "the other" in a place where there are almost as many native Swedes as foreign-born?”, and “how do these two foreign-born people with ethnic backgrounds perceive Norrliden as a place and what effect has that place had on their identity?” I have used a post-colonial philosophical ground and a qualitative approach, focusing on two different interviews with two men, living in Norrliden. In Norrliden almost 50% of the inhabitants are foreign-born were both of the interview-persons are feeling safe and secure. They both believe that the place has had an important impact of their lives and their identities, but their identities are just “immigrants” and not their ethnical belongings. Foreign persons often feel that they have no natural place in society and therefore feel that they do not fit in there. Sweden has become a country of "we" and "the other, and one of the interview-persons believes the Swedes to be" the other "in Norrliden, while the other person believes that it is the Kurds. He argues that foreign-born persons will always be "the other", due to the fact that these people will never be Swedish. They both sense that when their own ethnical group, while visiting their home-countries, are questioning them about ethnicity and origin, the result is that none of them feel at home anywhere. Not in their home-countries and not in Sweden. They have no natural place in any of the communities and they feel both constantly as "the other", no matter what country they find themselves in.

Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records: Viktiga frågeställningar och områden för FRBR2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this Bachelor's thesis the result from a Delphi study regarding FRBR, performed by Yin Zhang and Athena Salaba in 2007 and published in 2009 – What is next for Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records? A Delphi study – is analyzed by qualitatively interviewing professionals active within the library and information science field in Sweden. The results are compared and possible deviations and adjustments are illuminated and discussed. The purpose of the thesis is to determine the topicality of the Delphi study in 2011 from a Swedish perspective. Conclusions made from the thesis shows that the main areas are still the same, but adjustments regarding the relative order of issues might be needed; primarily a shift of focus from theoretical to practical issues. More specifically, a focus on user aspects, user studies and authority work is needed.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper I aimed to explore the bodily experiences and expressions that Christian charismatics interpret as religious.  The so-called presence of God and the so-called gifts of the spirit were in focus in the gathering of information. My purpose was to find out how the social community of the Christian charismatics affects the subjective bodily experiences that are interpreted as religious by the individual. The main questions were:

1: How do Christian charismatics describe religious experiences and their effect on the body?

2: What bodily expressions of religious experience can be observed in Christian charismatic contexts?

3: Is there a common way of expressing the experience of God's presence (individually or in a group) and how, in this case, can any resemblance be explained?

The methods used to answer these questions were qualitative interviews and participant observations, which then were analyzed by the anthropologist Thomas J. Csordas theory of embodiment. By applying his theory on a Swedish-based material I hope to bring a new perspective into the research on this subject and inspire to further research and curiosity about Christian charismatics in Sweden. In this essay phenomena such as falling in the spirit, speaking in tongues, and healing were analyzed. Some of the phenomena, which are interpreted as presences of God by the believer, could be explained according to the theory of embodiment, but some could not. The similarities of bodily religious experiences among different groups of Christian charismatics can be explained with the concept of habitus. That is because even though the groups may have long distances between them, the still share behaviors and belief systems , for example the Bible, as common ideas in the global habitus of Christian charismatics.

    Abstract [en]

Many questions are still left unanswered regarding the period c. 450-700 AD, when hordes of Anglo-Saxon migrants landed on the British Isles and by doing so made the starting point in the foundation of England. Who were these Germanic tribes? The theories of how the migration proceeded are today many. The two major theories today concerns whether it was a question of a mass migration or a gradual migration proceeded by smaller groups of military elite. Another interesting point, well worth discussing, is the concept of cultural identity, and especially of these Anglo-Saxon migrants. How do you strengthen your identity as a newcomer in foreign country? Is this reflected in the material culture, in the way you build your houses or how you choose to bury your dead? The purpose of this essay is to shed more light on the migrants that were to become the English.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Contemporary cities find themselves today in a fierce competition against other cities over company establishment and in -migration. In this competition, the city’s main objective is to become an attractive site of capital accumulation.  As this happens, the pressure on the vulnerable groups in society increases, leading to a social geographic polarization. I have examined how the shift towards neoliberalism has affected a city on the fringe as Kalmar. How is the postindustrial urban space constructed? I found this important to analyze since it put two important questions in the light: For whom, and for which purpose do we build the city today? My questions have been:

v  What are Kalmar municipality’s strategies to develop Kalmar?

v  What are the results of this strategy in the urban space?

v  What are the consequences of this strategy?

The research has been a case study of the city of Kalmar with a qualitative deductive approach where David Harvey’s theories about the city in a capitalist system have been the underpinning structure. My theoretical start off point has been that the forcing logic of the capital accumulation and the liberation of neoliberal theories are two crucial elements in understanding the social geographic divisions within the city. Kalmar has a strong focus on attractivity and the social geographic division within the city is apparent and distinct. The leasehold flat numbers has decreased, but Kalmar has not sold out its public good leaseholds in any large extent. Kalmar tries to create integration and counter segregation through the concentration of the urban space. The creation of the so called mixed use city is one of Kalmar’s methods to achieve these goals. A decreased state support within the housing sector and a fierce competition with other cities implies a very difficult task for contemporary cities when building the sustainable city of the future. The postindustrial city of today primarily gets its shape and form from the evaluation done by building companies and the City Planning Offices. Building the attractive city under neoliberal theories has lead to socioeconomic polarization, the privatization of public space, and less insight in the planning process. Capitalism through the capital accumulation process creates these patterns in the urban space, and through them we reshape the city and in the process, ourselves.

The goal an purpose of this essay is to study the diffrent points of view that Swedish priest within the Swedish Church have on the Topic of same sex marriage. I will use qualitative interview as method of choice to get answers for my questions.

The results of my study reveal that same sex mariiage has been a dividing issue between the different participants. Those in favour of the church´s decision to legalize same sex marriage consider love to be the most importent reason for marriage, while those who oppose the decision consider marriage to be a holy sacrament that is not easily changed.

Gender Roles among Russian and Belarusian Pentecostals2011In: PentecoStudies, ISSN 2041-3599, E-ISSN 1871-7691, Vol. 10, no 2, p. 174-195Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of the views that leading representatives of Pentecostal denominations in Russia and Belarus have regarding the roles of men and women in church and at home. Their views may be deemed traditional; they are convinced that women and men have unique roles given them by God. Ordained leadership positions in the church are reserved for men, and every husband is called to be “priest in the home”. While Pentecostals present the latter teaching as Biblical, I trace it back to St. Augustine. Russian Pentecostal gender roles are colored by Russian culture, but they differ from the surrounding culture in that Pentecostals give men greater responsibilities to care for their family. This may help explain the appeal of Pentecostalism to women, who are overrepresented in the denominations studied.

    Abstract [en]

In Russia in the late 1980s and early 1990s churches and denominations of all kinds grew quickly. Among those that grew most quickly were the Pentecostals. My impression is that by the mid-1990s, however, the growth rate for the leading Pentecostal denominations had slowed down considerably. In this paper I try to ascertain whether this in fact is the case and if so, what the causes for the slowdown in growth might have been. Because denominations have been reticent in sharing official membership statistics, I have looked for evidence of denominational growth rates in other places and have found evidence for a slowdown. I have then sought to explain the end of the revival among the Pentecostals. I find that the weakening of the Pentecostal churches is coupled with the strengthening of the Russian Orthodox Church in Russian society. The Orthodox Church has come to serve as an ethnic marker and it has successfully persuaded its adherents that non-Orthodox forms of Christianity are foreign sects. While I present little new empirical material, I ask new questions of the material available which help explain the slowdown in church growth among Russian Pentecostals.

Satan's Fall and the Mission of the Seventy-Two2011In: Svensk Exegetisk Årsbok, ISSN 1100-2298, Vol. 76, p. 95-114Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This is a close reading of the cryptic reference to Satan’s fall in Luke10:18, one of the more important verses relating to the devil in the NewTestament. This verse is found only in Luke, and my goal in this paper isto interpret it in the context of that gospel. My primary interests are not inascertaining whether this is an authentic logion of Jesus, whether it can beused to reconstruct the historical Jesus, or what its original Sitz im Lebenmight have been.1 For the sake of simplicity, I will refer to the author ofLuke’s Gospel as Luke. My interpretation does not rest on identifying theauthor of this gospel with the person(s?) referred to in Col 4:14, 2 Tim4:11, and Phm 24.

In an earlier study of the references to “the ruler of this world” inJohn’s Gospel I concluded that, according to that gospel, Satan has beencast down from the heavenly council but remains a force to be reckonedwith on earth.2 In this article I will argue that the report of Satan’s fall inLuke assumes a similar series of events, with the difference that Luke’saccount seems to imply that Satan’s fall is realized each time individuals –beginning with the seventy-two – respond in obedience to Jesus and areempowered by him.

    Abstract [sv]

Before the autumn term 2011 the Swedish compulsory school adopted new syllabuses in relation to, inter alia, religion. Changes within the religion topic have historically been a heavily debated issue among decision-makers, interest groups and the church, where the role of the Christianity has been particularly controversial.

The main purpose of this study is therefore to investigate how the Swedish compulsory school’s teaching of Christianity has changed over the years. I have in order to conduct this study applied a descriptive method as well as a content analysis. The Swedish compulsory school’s current and historical syllabuses in religion have served as basis for this study.

The outcome of this study clearly shows that the Christianity has received less influence to the benefit of other topics. At the same time the content of the Swedish school’s teaching has to a large extent changed and put currently more focus on the religion’s impact on the society as well as the society’s impact on the religion. However, from a globalization and secularization perspective the changes are to a large extent self-evident and not very surprising, due to the fact that the Christian influence over the Swedish society no longer is of same importance and that modern society allows different religions within the same national boundary.

    Abstract [en]

This essay focuses on the elderly and their religious beliefs and is based on the origin idea of a secular Sweden, but where immigration has been the source of additional various religious affiliations. This study intends to nuance the problems that previous researchers focused on when doing research on immigration, by interviewing staff members of nursing homes in immigrant dense areas, especially Malmoe, Gothenburg and Stockholm.

The aim is to investigate how the allocation of residents, with different religious than Protestant Christians, is distributed at nursing homes and to see if there is a need for adjustments. Additionally, the thesis about immigrants and immigrants' identity and attitudes to Swedish society is discussed with John Berry´s acculturation theories and strategies.

The results show that the majority of the nursing homes have residents with different religious affiliations and that some practical adjustments have been done, but it also shows that nursing homes have changed to the extent that they have adapted to a secular society. Ignorance and prejudice contribute to the problem in terms of seeing all residents as individuals and at the same time ensuring adaption according to all their needs, which is exemplified in the solutions made by using multi-cultural staff members and specialized departments. The relationship between nursing homes and the Swedish church continues but the role of the church service has changed. However, the idea that residents with different affiliations are free to exercise their religion in private occurs simultaneously as it is highlighted that immigrants is assimilated into a secular Swedish society. This in turn means that not every residents need is seen to at the investigated nursing homes.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor´s thesis analyzes the debate in a number of Swedish media regarding the introduction of video games as a new medium in the public libraries. The theory and method used is discourse analysis. Three questions were asked: how the introduction of video games as a new media in libraries is discussed, how is it motivated and in what way the authors of the articles analyzed are speaking about new media and the mission of the library.

The selected articles were divided into four themes and the analysis resulted in the identification of two main discourses, one which is positive to the introduction and integration of new media in the libraries’ collections, and one which has a more negative approach and uses quality and culture as an argument.

The conclusion is that video games are a medium so widely used that librarians have to decide whether or not they want to include it in the libraries’ collections, and by deciding this they reveal their attitude towards the mission and purpose of the public library.

Keywords: offentlig konst, city branding, demokrati, postpolitik

Creative People and Industries for Growth and Development: A case study of the municipality of Kalmar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the relationship between place and creative people and industries. The shift from industrial economies to knowledge-driven economies has ushered in what some scholars refer to as the Creative Economy. At the heart of this new economy are the Creative Industries, which consist of people, creativity, skill and talent. These industries, which are creating more jobs and adding increased value to products and services, represent one of the largest and fastest growing sectors. In Sweden, the Creative Industries are increasingly being recognized as an important asset for global competitiveness and research reveals that 35% of Sweden’s employed are considered part of the so-called ‘Creative Class’: artists, researchers, managers and other related professionals. The research also reveals, however, that there is an uneven distribution of this talent pool throughout the country. As regional growth is of continual concern in Sweden, there has been an increased focus on the potential of the Creative Industries to stimulate development on the local and regional level. The municipality of Kalmar recognizes that its strong cultural institutions are among its greatest assets and they are working to integrate culture and cultural values into the city planning process in order to create an attractive environment. In addition, their recent establishment as a university town is considered to be of the utmost significance in their struggle to attract creative people and industries, and Linnaeus University is recognized as an important motor for regional development as well as a seedbed for innovation, research and new companies.
