Dör faran med gärningsmannen?: En kvalitativ framinganalys av skolattentatet i Trollhättan2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In October 2015, a masked man armed with a sword and a knife entered the school Kronan in the Swedish town Trollhättan. Four people, including the perpetrator, were killed and another two severely injured. The aim of this study is to examine the frames in medias description of the event and of the perpetrator from the view of the journalistic responsibilities. The event in Trollhättan can be seen as an act of terror and during such events the journalistic responsibilities sometimes changes. There is a conflict in the aspect of telling the truth on one hand and protecting the citizens from harm on the other, in order not to reproduce the terrorist’s message in the press. This study is a qualitative framing analysis of 11 articles from the local newspaper TTELA. We found that the most salient frame of the event was grief rather than drama and that the media acted on the responsibility of protecting the citizens from details. The perpetrator was described as a lone wolf with connections to racist groups on the Internet. There was a shallow frame regarding the danger with the groups on the Internet but the main problem was described as gone with the death of the lonely perpetrator.

Var sitter makten?: En studie av hur den visuella kommunikationen används i Svensk Damtidning för att skapa maktrelationer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Titel: Var sitter makten?

    Abstract [en]

This paper is based on a quantitative survey. The study aims to answer the questionwhich media young people rather use to take part of the news. The results showthat young people today in Kalmar preferably and often read newspapers on theInternet and mobile phone. The questions asked was about which media they usually use, the level ofconfidence they had in various media, how interest was in different newscategories, willingness to pay for online news and background issues relatedsubjects. The survey was aimed at high school students in Kalmar and weredistributed and collected on-site at the schools. What was remarkable among theresponses was that young people largely had access to a morning newspaper athome and said that they would consider subscribing to one in the future. This isdespite the large use of digital media. The responses showed that many use severaldifferent media in a day. For young people the traditional media becomes more ofa complement to the newer media, many young people watching news on theinternet through various sources and then afterwards reading a newspaper orwatching TV. That was the order in which the survey showed, while the confidenceof news via TV and newspapers is much higher than for news online. The answershows that Internet usage and to read news on the Internet has a higher prioritythan the traditional media among respondents, as news companies' investments inweb news goes in line with the younger generations priorities. The only problem isthat the majority do not want to pay for news online.

Ett schackbräde är inget utan sina pjäser: En beskrivande studie av användares deltagande hos nischade online pure players2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe participation in a new context in which niche journalism is combined with online communities. The majority of past research regarding participation in journalism is focused on traditional journalism and the definition of the term needs to be updated. The aim of the study was to describe participation amongst niche pure players. Using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, a survey study and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The two empirical aspects resulted in a perspective of participation amongst five pure players, sharing a similar niche.

The results of the study showed that niche pure players create user participation by combining journalistic participation with participation in online communities. Empirical data showed a correlation between user participation in the two different sections of the sites. Users with higher participation in one of the sections also partook more in the other. Furthermore, another correlation found was that users who considered it important to be able to partake in a discussion of the journalistic content, also considered the online community to be of great importance to the site. Additionally, the study showed that there is an exchange of information and knowledge, being regarded by the users as something of high value.

By providing a platform for horizontal communication between users in the form of a forum, in which users are able to freely create and share content, a participatory culture is created. This participatory culture further increases the degree of user participation in the journalistic content.

Rewriting for the masses: An analysis on the articles in Nyheter24 during two weeks.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The object of this study was to get a wider picture of the articles published in the Swedish online newspaper Nyheter24. The newspaper is the biggest newspaper only coming out online in Sweden today and basically the idea was to get an overview of their content.

The study was based upon two research questions: “What does Nyheter24 write about?” and “What type of journalism does Nyheter24 make?”

My research method was a quantitative content analysis and the study contains 550 articles in total, gathered during two weeks time from the website.

The results show that Nyheter24 writes about various topics but they tend to produce news stories with an odd or sensational angle. More than half of the articles studied in the news section were rewrites from other news media and less than 20 % of the articles in the same section had quotes from interviews done by the newspaper themselves. In the sports section, just one of all the articles published in the section during the two weeks contained a quote from an interview Nyheter24 had done.

The study does also show that investigative journalism is rare at Nyheter24. But it was even more uncommon, zero articles in the news section, for the journalists to do reports of places or news events by going outside the newsroom.

What played a bigger part in the news from Nyheter24 was social media. Especially the sports section and the entertainment section published stories where social media was the origin of the story.

Generally the results show what several other researchers have found out about online journalism. There is a big recycling of news and the journalists tend to be stuck behind a computer, screening websites and doing rewrites to publish a lot of material quickly. Doing interviews to the stories seemed to have a lower priority.

Samma sport, samma guld, olika kön: En studie om svensk kvällspress representation av SM-vinnande fotbollslag.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how the biggest newspaper in Sweden, Aftonbladet, represent female and male football. The question examined was: How has the representation of the Swedish SM-winners in men vs women's football changed over the last decade?

We made a discourse analysis of 16 news articles from two different time periods.

The results show that female football players and the female football game are marginalized in the newspaper compared to the representation of male football and male football players. Women´s victory is given less attention, making their achievement look minor and easier to reach. Instead journalists more often have a tendency to focus on external things, such as individual’s future, money and the team’s or player’s next tasks. It is also often men, coaches or chairman, who are chosen to speak in articles about female football.

We could also see that the representation of men does not differentiate significantly today compared to ten years ago. The way to write about male football feels ideal and

contains more components that encourage reading. The articles are more in-depth, focus more on the performance and more often put the achievement into a perspective to emphasize the victory.

We have seen that sports journalism has taken steps to reach more gender equality, but also noted that there are more steps to take.

Press på lokal demokrati: En kvantitativ innehållsanalys som undersöker huruvida hypoteserna i betänkandet av 1972 års pressutredning uppfylls när Östrans lokalredaktioner läggs ner i Emmaboda och Torsås.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This theisis aims to expand the understanding of how the termination of Östran local editorial staff is effecting the municipality politics and organisation orientated substance of the rivale newspaper Barometern when it becomes a monopoly news paper. I examine if the hypothesis in consideration of the press investigation of 1972 will occur through a quantitative analysis of selected articles in Barometern and Östran in 2010 and 2014. I examine if the information will be insufficient, if it will be a monopoly of opinion formation, if the investigative journalism will be suffering and if the group communication will be worse.

With this analysis it becomes clear that the news paper Barometern cover less of the municipality politics and organisation orientated substance when it is a competive news paper.

My analysis shows us that the information will not be insufficient, it will not be a monopoly of opinion formation, the investigative journalism will not be suffering and the group communication will be worse when Östrans local editorial staff is terminated.

Diskussionsforum eller slagfä̈lt?: En studie om de svenska nyhetssajternas kommentarsfält2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study has been to examine and analyze what kind of discussions that takes place in the commentary fields of swedish online newspapers. We started by collecting nearly 2000 commentaries from three newspapers and then used a quantitative content analysis to interpret the material.

We divided the comments into different categories like arguing, media criticism and opinion on other comments in order to see which categories were most common. The results of the analysis shows that there is a discussion in the commentary fields where most of the commentaries stick to the subject, where media criticism is unusual and where arguing is quite common. The discussion however is usually negative. The results can be connected to the theories of deliberative democracy, flaming and earlier research on commentary fields. The study have been important to understand what kind of discussion the commentary fields contain.

Skönheten och Idealen : En studie i hur prinsessornas könsroller har förändrats över tid i Disneyfilmer2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how the portrayal of the Disney princesses have changed over time, we looked at eleven movies with a total of twelve different princesses. We wanted to see if there were any stereotypical roles of women in Disney movies and we wanted to see when the most obvious change occured in the portrayal of the princesses. This paper has used the method of qualitative content analysis using a semiotic and narrative analysis with the help of the actant model. We have selected different characteristics and categories that we looked for in the movies. These features and categories include various stereotypical roles of characters and what chores the princesses perform in their homes. This paper has applied the theories in the subjects of gender, stereotypes and feminist analyzes of Disney movies. From our analysis we concluded that there were clear differences between the older and newer movies. The women in the first movies only dreamed about finding a man but in the later movies she had other goals and dreams beside finding a man. The princesses in the newer films are more independent than the older princesses when they constantly needed help from a man. We could then draw the conclusion that the prinsesses in the first movies were very stereotypical feminine and the prinsesses in the newer movies are more independent and brave.

”Dette kan være prisen for å være moralens vokter i alle sammenhenger”: En kvalitativ studie om rapporteringen kring Therese Johaugs dopingfall i svenska och norska medier2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine in which way nationalistic influences plays a prominent part in the news coverage of larger media houses. This by studying how  two newspapers, Swedish Aftonbladet and Norwegian Verdens Gang, portrays and reports about Therese Johaug after she was tested positive for doping.

We performed a critical discourse analysis of a total of 20 web-based news articles. These articles were chosen from the date the news appeared and one week forward. This in order to see if the the two newspapers were characterized with nationalistic tendencies as well as comparing them to see what the differences and similarities might be.

By using theories such as national identitets, nationalism, ”us and them” and imagined communities we came to the conclusion that a nationalistic discourse is very much present. The subjects in the articles often become representatives of either Norway or Sweden - depending on the nationality. Johaug is mostly characterized as a national hero and sympathies are often shown from the norwegian news-articles. The opposite meaning were shown in the swedish news-articles. Described as an antagonist and a cheat - the complete opposite of a national hero. Imagined communities are also present as a nationalistic discourse. The people of Norway and Sweden are often involved - in order to justify this imagined community which occurs within the nation's borders.

The similarities and differences between the two newspapers are quite subtle - but present nonetheless. This with a nationalistic discourse which confirms both previous research and our theoretical framework.

"Allt som är lagligt är inte lämpligt": En fallstudie om Kommunals kris 20162016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aims to look at how the knowledge and awareness regarding source criticism is seen amongst media students attending their first year at Linnaeus University. Our theoretical base includes to explain what source criticism is, about media literacy, the power media has in the Swedish society, the effects that media can create, and the effects of internet. This study consists of eleven interviews where knowledge and awareness regarding source criticism are in focus. Our interviewees have contributed with diverse reasoning and thoughts, which will be presented closer in this study. A central part of this study also contains questions about the reasoning of the eleven media students regarding source criticism in relation to their career choice and position in society. Our result shows that the knowledge and awareness regarding source criticism amongst the eleven students are high, however they also express that this might not be the case amongst the population in general. All interviewees testify that source criticism is a subject that affects and that it is a high possibility it does not get the attention it deserves.

A Platform For Somali Ice-Fishing: Changing Media Representations Of Somalis In Minneapolis2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study looks at how media representations change regarding Somalis in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, under the course of a project called “I AM A STAR for Somalia”, launched in April 2011. A quantitative content analysis of print media is employed, concentrating on factors such as actors, subjects, patterns of quoting, involvement and article prominence. Various studies are used as a foundation, including Teun Van Dijk (1991), which introduce and explain theories such as Ideology and Racism, Agenda Setting, Minimal Effects and Integration. Ultimately, the analysis reveals a change in media portrayals correlating with the I AM A STAR project; Somalis are portrayed in roles and stories which normalise their representation in the year following the launch. In the second year, however, these positive effects are not as apparent.

Alla som ogillar annonser - räck upp en hand!:  En attitydundersökning om reklam på Instagram2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to explain user attitudes toward advertising on Instagram. Two forms of marketing communication that we chose to focus on were native advertising and promoted advertising through celebrities. The main goal was to find out which attitudes Instagram users aged 18-35 years had toward these two types of advertising. The data was collected through a quantitative survey, which was conducted digitally on Facebook. Our empirical findings showed us a result that confirmed previous research in the area - that users have negative attitudes towards any type of advertising. We identified minor demographical differences, but the main differences were in the comparison of the two types of advertising. As we analyzed the respondents’ answers through a perspective from the chosen theories, it showed us that users tend to have more positive attitudes towards promoted advertising from celebrities, and more negative attitudes towards native advertising.

    Abstract [en]

The goal of our study is to analyze how young adults in the ages of 20-23 observe digital newspapers. Our main research question is: Are the visual parts of the news site more important than text for young adults? Our second research question is: How do young adult users switch between visual and text elements? Finally, the last question is: What is it that attracts users into reading an article on an online newspaper? To achieve our goal we used a method called eye-tracking which is a process of recording a person’s eye movements using a infrared camera and a computer program processes that converts the data into visual form. Additionally we have also done short interviews before and after the eye-tracking study as a supplement.

A total of seven people participated in our study, three men and four women. After the initial interview, the test subject got to freely browse Sweden’s most popular digital newspaper Aftonbladet.se for the duration of five minutes. Afterwards, every person would have another short interview about their experiences of the site.

Our study shows that young adults say that they don’t consider the visual elements to be as important as written text. However, the physical test data shows that the visual elements are in most cases observed before written text. Despite that, the users still spent more time on reading the text as opposed to looking at the photos or other visual elements. It’s hard to specify definitive reading habits, but we can see a pattern that the users tend to switch back and forth between visual and text objects.

"Min kompis Sebastian, som du också känner...": När den informella podcasten anammas av tidningshusen2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

2012 was the year when the podcast had a breakthrough in Sweden. As media corporatehouses developed, they adopted new forms to mediate journalistic material, whereas the podcasts was one of them. The podcast has had a rather informal reputation in Sweden in contrary to The United States and Great Britain, where it holds a higher sense of prestige and professionalism. It is therefore relevant to investigate what happens when media corporatehouses i Sweden embraces the podcast through themes such as tabloidization, commercialism, convergence and divergence. We chose to investigate the content of the podcast in the tabloid press Aftonbladet, and in the serious press, Dagens Nyheter. We also compared the two to see if there is a difference in content when it comes to journalistic principles. Through a qualitative method we analyzed the podcasts with a framework consisting of different themes. By using a directed content analysis, we assumed from certain theories whilst staying open minded against unexpected themes. We discovered that while the podcast could be a form of journalism, it is a new way of mediating it. Podcasts from both newspapers were mainly commercialized and consisting of  “soft news” as the journalists assumed a personal role. The form itself allows the content to be subjective and informal, whilst providing a forum for public debate, to inform and investigate. Although, most podcasts did not provide that. We believe that the podcast possibly will develop into a more professional product in Sweden, just as the blog in recent years, when adopted by media corporations.

The raising voices of the have-nots in the Bolivian mountains: A study about the use of participatory communication in the context of empowerment2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Participatory communication is a well-known concept within social development context that highlights the importance of a two-way flow of information and equal terms of participation and accountability. Over the last 30 years there has, however, been doubts concerning both credibility and effectiveness, how much local communities are actually involved with decision-making, direction of program etc. (Cronwall, 2006). This field study was conducted with the purpose to study the use of participatory communication in the context of empowerment, and in order to do so, a case study was performed. Empowerment refers to the transition from a state of powerlessness to a state of control over one's life, where one owns the capacity to affect his or her environment (Sadan, 2004). In the Andes of Bolivia live indigenous people, the most poor and excluded people in South America, and in an attempt to strengthen these communities the project Yanapanakuna (Quechua for 'help us help ourselves') was initiated in 1993. A programme intended to empower and increase the quality of live for people in these communities, with help of a participatory communicative approach (Tearfund, 2013, Tearfund 2014b). The aim of this study was find out in which participatory communication can be useful in the process of empowerment, and results showed that this approach can help the process of empowerment either directly or by creating conditions in which empowerment more effectively can happen. However, different circumstances and variables seemed to play an important role in the process, and only few recommendations, mainly focused on dialogue, were given in the conclusions.

    Abstract [en]

In 1973 the famous Swedish children’s author Astrid Lindgren wrote the story about the brothers Lionheart. A story about the love between two brothers, bravery and death. Ever since, there have been a widely discussion whether the story is suitable for the young readers. Although the voices heard in the discussion mostly comes from grown-ups, but what does the children actually think? The aim of this study was to display the children’s interpretations in terms of the metaphors, the semiotics and the sequence of events the film Brothers Lionheart which was screened in the first time 1977. To answer the issues we watched the movie and implemented semi-structured interviews with seven 10-11 year old children. The children in this study gave us both different and interesting interpretations in terms of the metaphors and semiotics which could depend on different experiences in life and backgrounds. This study also shows that the children’s perception of the narrative structure in the movie varies which could mean that their story scheme sometimes is more or less developed in this age.

Kings riktiga kungar: En semiotisk bildanalys med semiotisk multimodalitet om representationen av maskuliniteter i det svenska magasinet King.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how the Swedish magazine King represent masculinity in its personal portrait. We have used image analysis with semiotic multimodality about the representation of masculinities in the Swedish magazine King. We have, in this study, been using six personal portrait in our analysis. We have been studying the first and the last picture in the person portraits and also the first pictures interacting with the headline.

To help answer our issue, we asked ourselves the following questions: How does the image and title interact on the front page of the personal portrait? What is the dominant representation of masculinity in King? What variations of masculinities can be found in King?

The result we have found is that King choose to portray the men shown in the personal portraits like men in a position of power. This certain power has been manifested in different ways, such as in violence, comics and other elements. The dominant masculinity we found in our personal portrait was the hegemonic were only one man was not included in the hegemonic masculinity.

Raising Theoretical Concept Understanding In Courses With Journalist Students2017In: The 2nd EuroSoTL conference, June 8-9 2017, Lund, Sweden: Long paper / [ed] Roy Andersson, LTH Lund, Lund University , 2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of teaching a theory course for journalism students, year three, preparing for thesis work. The purpose is to increase understandings of theoretical tensions in professions-oriented education and how they can be dealt with. Research questions are: 1. How are journalism students self-perception of theory and its relevance to them and their thesis, before and after a theory course using more student active learning elements? 2. How can selfperceptions be understood in relation to course evaluations and student performance? 3. What values can be understood as made possible of the different pedagogic elements and how are contextual aspects influencing? Didactic decisions for the course were guided by student-active learning: constructing learning through performing actions (Piaget, 1951), through experiential education (Dewey, 1938) emphasizing the learner in the learning process, and higher-level thinking skills (Bloom, 1956). Course aim was to socialize students into a more academic line of thinking, paired with strengthening them to integrate theory and practice. Therefore, the course combined following elements in progression: 1) Seminar, 2) Mini Lectures, and 3) Exercises. Method in the study is self-assessment (Bourke, 2010), first at the beginning of the course, second ten weeks after thesis for Bachelor degree. Course evaluation and teacher self-reflection is added as assessment perspective. Theory used to analyze the results is the embedding of research and inquiry through scaffolding (Healey et al, 2014). The analysis also includes Schulman’s (2005) signature pedagogies. Results imply there is a need to engage in changes of perceptions of what journalism is (practice-academia). This confirms the vital importance for professional learning of knowledge setting types and the epistemic practices and resources they offer (Nerland and Jensen, 2014)

    Abstract [sv]

The public sector in Sweden has in recent decades undergone a large change due to market and liberalism impact. This change has meant that marketing communication and its concepts have been adopted by administrative authorities. In this thesis, we used governmentality, social constructivism and an interpretive perspective to examine the staff at the County Administrative Board in Kalmar County and their experiences and opinions of the concepts ”customer” and ”trademark”. The study was designed as a case study with qualitative interviews. The study showed that the experiences can be divided into three categories: those that are positive, those who are worried and see risks as well as those who believe the concepts are just empty words. We also discovered that there was a discrepancy between the management's view of the market influenced communication, which was positive and more liberal, and the rest of the staff which emphasized the traditional bureaucratic rhetoric.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to study how the international media CNN frame their news reporting with the change of presidency in America, after a year of being accused of spreading fake news by president Trump.

By using a Critical Discourse Analysis, CDA and a rhetorical analysis I examined a selection of articles published in CNN. In total I examined ten articles from 2015 focusing on how CNN choose to portray the identity of the president at the time Barack Obama. I also selected ten articles from 2017 to analyze how the CNN choose to construct Trumps identity a year after his ascent to the president office.

The result show that Barack Obama is portrayed as an inspiring president always there for his people. Donald Trump is instead portrayed as a bad leader for the country while CNN started to focus on regaining the trust of the public.

In 2015 CNN also used more pathos and ethos arguments than in 2017 when they instead focus on arguments through logos.

CNN show that they stand by their goal to control and oversee the power of governments in democracy. Media and governments in a democracy work together to balance their power.

"Jag vill inte vara kompis med polisen": En förtroendestudie utifrån generation Y:s perspektiv2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to determine to what degree the framing of the political party the Sweden Democrats had changed in swedish media, from 2010 in contrast to 2012. Particular interest was directed towards the framing of the party as a problem. This was done by studying the news articles during 12 weeks in 2010, and 12 weeks in 2012, in the newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. These particular newspapers were especially interesting to study since they have been outspokenly critical of the party. Both of the newspapers can be said to be among the most clearly critical towards the Sweden Democrats.I studied 256 published articles retrieved through the news database Newsline. Quantitative content analysis was used to determine patterns and tendencies. The theories used to determine variables and the analysis of the articles were the framing theory of Robert Entman (1993) and Jesper Strömbäck (2009). Theories regarding the function of news media in democracy were also used in the analysis from the context of Nord & Strömbäck (2012).The study showed that a slightly more negative framing of the party occurs in 2012. Framing of the party as a problem for the democratic principles occurred less, and moral evaluations were similar between the years. The term xenophobic was mostly used to describe the party in the the overall few instances it was used during both years, with a slight shift towards more neutral and less evocative descriptions like immigration critical in 2012.

"This is, and will be, one of New Zealand's darkest days": En kvalitativ gestaltningsanalys av moskéattackerna i Christchurch 20192019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The 15th of March 2019, the city of Christchurch in New Zealand was exposed to two mosque attacks that left at least 50 people killed and many people wounded. The attacks were described as a terrorist attack performed by a 28-year-old Australian man with right-wing extremist views. The two mosque attacks were broadcast live by the perpetrator on his social media accounts. By using a qualitative text analysis, the author has studied the reports of the attacks of three news channels, CNN, RT English and al- Jazeera English, with a selection of nine articles. The study has investigated the description and the framing of the mosque attacks by each news channel. With the aid of a framing analysis, the author was able to identify which frames that has occurred in the reports by CNN, RT English and al-Jazeera English. The aim of the study was to study the framing of the mosque attacks by the news channels with different culture valuations and whether there were any similarities or differences in their descriptions of the attacks.

The result of the analysis could show that there were both similarities and differences in the reports of the news channels. CNN and al-Jazeera English used the affective and attributive framework and RT English used the descriptive framework in their reports of the mosque attacks.

Goda journalister, eviga hjältar: En diskursanalys om nyhetsjournalistikens gestaltning av Kim Wall och Nils Horners eftermäle2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how news journalism represented the two swedish journalists Kim Wall and Nils Horner, when describing their posthumous reputation after they were murdered during assignments. The research questions examined were: How does the journalism, in describing their posthumous reputations, portray the story of Kim Wall, and Nils Horner? What differences and similarities can be found in how they are portrayed as journalists, and as victims?

We used Faircloughs critical discourse analysis (CDA) to find reoccurring discourses in the description of Horner and Wall. By examining the characteristics they were assigned and what conclusions the audience were offered to draw about their journalistic competence and about them as victims of murder, we found many similarities between Horner and Wall. They are both described as exceptionally competent. They are also portrayed as born with a “calling” towards the journalistic profession, and in both cases, they are ascribed with next to supernatural characteristics. As victims of murder we found them to be portrayed as idealistic, with some variations in relation to the description of the content of their character, and where the murder took place. Our study shows that the discourses we found contribute to the creation of heroic myths in the news journalisms description of them. They are elevated, and our conclusion is that by elevating their murdered colleagues as heroes, the news journalists are also elevating themselves and, in turn, the journalistic profession.

En samvetslös diktator eller ett hjälplöst offer?: En kvalitativ studie av nyhetsrapporteringen kring Benny Fredriksson under metoo-rörelsen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine the news coverage surrounding Stockholm City Theatre’s former CEO Benny Fredriksson during the metoo-movement, from the time of the accusations against him until a time after his death. The questions examined were: How is Benny Fredriksson represented at the time of the publishing of the accusations and at the time of his death? How are the anonymous witnesses and the journalism represented? How does the representation of victims and perpetrators change after the death of Benny Fredriksson? What are the differences and similarities in the reporting of Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter?

To analyze this, we made a discourse analysis of 12 articles from Aftonbladet and 13 articles from Dagens Nyheter. The results showed that the roles of all the characters change during the coverage. At the time of the publishing of the accusations, Benny Fredriksson is represented as an evil dictator that harasses his employees at Stockholm City Theatre. After his death, Benny Fredriksson is represented as a victim of circumstances, helpless and full of anxiety. At first, the witnesses are represented as scared, helpless victims. At the end of the coverage the representation has changed, and the victims are instead represented as perpetrators that are accused of lying. The journalism goes from being represented as investigative journalism to being represented as a media hunt that killed Benny Fredriksson. Overall, Aftonbladet is more defending of the witnesses and the journalism while Dagens Nyheter is more defending of Benny Fredriksson. The study shows that a death can affect the news coverage and consequently how the characters are represented.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study was to examine the representation of girls and boys in journalism directed towards children between 8 and 14 years old. The study was conducted upon 15 articles from the Swedish children’s magazine Kamratposten. We examined how the gender systems reproduce and/or change through Kamratposten’s series “KP fixar”. To be able to analyze this we used a critical discourse analysis as method and we used theories including gender systems, media logic and identification. Our main results of the study showed that the gender systems and gender contracts both were changed and reproduced in “KP fixar”. The changes were shown through the fact that girls and boys were mainly not treated differently from each other based on their sexes, however the reproduction could be seen through the children being described as prominently masculine or feminine based on the performed activity in the articles.

From hate media to great media?: Rwandan radio journalist’s view of the media climate in their country2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In 1994 a brutal genocide took place in Rwanda were one part of the population killed over 800 000 of their own people over a period of one hundred days. Rwandan radio, the biggest and most influential medium in the country, played a crucial part in the tragedy and today, almost 22 years after the genocide, Rwanda is trying to rebuild the media system as well as the trust between the public and the journalists. Over recent years Rwanda has made a huge development within the media sector and keeps moving forward from its dark history.

This study aims to examine how radio journalist at the government owned radio channel RBA, Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, experiences the changes in the media climate and focus will mainly lie on the period after the introduction of new media laws in 2013. This study also examines how journalists have experienced different international collaborations, especially between Western countries and Rwanda, that are aiming to develop the media system. In total eleven radio journalist from RBA were interviewed and our research questions were as follows; How do Rwandan radio journalists within the RBA experience the media situation in the country today? How do Rwandan radio journalists within the RBA regard their role within their profession? How can Rwanda’s media climate be interpreted through different normative media systems?

To understand the media climate at RBA three theoretical perspectives were used as a base; Agenda Setting Theory, globalisation and domestication. To study the media situation an ethnographic method was applied and put into the context of Rwanda's history and culture. During our interviews we have talked about how the journalists regard their role in the society, how it has changed, what may still change, how they value their independency as journalists and what they think the future holds for Rwandan media development. The informants all agreed that Rwandan journalism is constantly developing and journalists are learning how to work in a society where the media's biggest aim is to be trusted by the public. Rwandan journalists and international journalists, the latter group also partly represented in the study, regard Rwanda's media situation differently but both parts agree upon the fact that the country has a long way to go to reach an open media climate. Our result leads up to a cultural conclusion; it is difficult to make a fair judgement of the media situation in Rwanda only by measuring the country's development and the journalistic competence according to Western ideals.

”Den som granskar samhället måste också själv kunna tåla att bli granskad”: En fallstudie i Aftonbladets nyhetsrapportering av anklagelserna om våldtäkt och andra sexualbrott mot journalisten Fredrik Virtanen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine how the newspaper Aftonbladet reported the accusation on the journalist Fredrik Virtanen concerning sexual harassment and rape. He was at the time of the accusations employed at Aftonbladet as a chronicler and columnist. Aftonbladet has been criticized for inadequate coverage of the case.

The main questions this study examined are: How and what did Aftonbladet report regarding one of their own journalists being accused for sexual harrassment? And how did the reporting comply with the editorial policy at Aftonbladet?

The method of the study was a case study and critical discourse analysis, with the aim to examine news and whether the newspaper followed its editorial policy. The main theme listed in the texts published by Aftonbladet was that an Aftonbladet employee was accused for rape. Additional themes where discourses regarding the work environment at Aftonbladet and a moral discourse regarding the ethics of publishing names and reporting openly about the accusations. Other accusations than rape are not mentioned in Aftonbladet, except in one article regarding an interview with Fredrik Virtanen. Further, the published texts mainly consists of opinions and interviews of management at Aftonbladet, including Fredrik Virtanen. Thus, Aftonbladet has reported the case one-sidedly. The message mediated in texts regarding press ethics and news prioritation is that the case was primarly treated as a staff issue rather than news. The criticism directed against Aftonbladet regarding lack of news reporting and openness has been answered by Aftonbladet with reference to the fact that the newspaper follows the press ethics and publishing rules.  However, it can be determined that Aftonbladet, despite its reference to press ethics, did not follow its own editorial policy when reporting the case.

För vem kommenterar du?: En studie om interaktion mellan H&M och deras användare på Facebook2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay addresses the subject social interaction in the social network named Facebook. The studied interaction took place between the Swedish clothing company H&M and the active visitors on the company page in the social network. The subject of social interaction in social media is an interesting field to study due to its vast range, the largely amount of people involved and it is of interest to see how the company and customers interact. The purpose of the essay was to study the interaction between the company and visitors. The statement of the problem is divided into four questions which is processing a deeper analysis of how the company page is used. What reasons the company might have to be in the social network and reasons for visitors to interact on the company page and lastly how the attitude from the company was perceived. Previous research used for this study has been four articles on the subject of social media to see how the research had taken place. Chosen methods for the study were methods of mapping of the company page in the network, a critical discourse analysis on chosen elements from the mapping and a complementary questionnaire sent out to the visitors in the social network. Through these we received insight in the fact that the pages were used mostly for information and customer-to-customer interaction and so also expression of views. The given conclusions of the study were that it creates an imagined interaction with the company, whilst the real interaction is between the customers under the auspices of the company. We found that the most important factor was to have the opportunity to be able to interact, even though the shown views were played with the assertion of one’s identity. For the company there was a reason to have an active page, a cohesive customer base and reach out with the company identity to a wider audience.

I share therefore I am: En undersökning i svenska studenters motiv för att dela nyheter på Facebook2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Researchers points out that social media has become a powerful venue to spread news, both for the news business and the users. Although the news diffusion has become a phenomenon to be reckoned with, we have found no research in Sweden about what motivate users of social media to share news.

This thesis work therefore investigates news sharing on the social network Facebook by examining user motives in the light of the media theory uses and gratifications. A web survey was conducted and distributed to students at a Swedish university. The result showed that expression was the strongest motive to share news on Facebook, and the item that was highly valued by the students was to give other valuable information. The result also showed that other motives for sharing news was socialization, information, status and entertainment.

Olika tidningar - Samma nyheter?: En studie i homogenisering2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Less diversity and more homogenization in the media`s news range is the subject for our bachelor thesis. By analyzing and comparing three separate weeks in two of Sweden's largest evening newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen we wanted to discoverhow the diversity between the two newspapers had changed over the years, more precisely from 1993 until now. Had there been a homogenization or not? We wanted to study this because it is a long going debate about the news stories becoming more and more the same. An important debate because less diversity in news events and news presentation may lead to less diversity in public opinions and knowledge. When it comes to our result we found out that the diversity in the week of 2013 in comparison tothe week of 1993 was better for Expressen, but not for Aftonbladet. At the same time, our second analyzing week took place in 2003 and in comparison to that week both newspapers had greater diversity in 2013. So when we make a conclusion after looking at these three weeks we could say that homogenization was a problem in 2003, but is not anymore. Except for when it comes to public affairs. When we divided the news intodomestic, foreign, public and non-public affairs we discovered that the foreign news for every week had less diversity than domestic news, we found the same result in public affairs in comparison to non-public affairs. But unlike foreign news where the diversity increased in 2013, the diversity of public affairs kept decreasing. If the weeks we selected reflects the two newspapers news range on a greater scale this could be a democratic problem, because if there are some news that can contribute to more public opinions and wider knowledge it is public affairs.

Trovärdigheten framför allt: En studie om hur svenska företag väljer att gestalta betydelsen av att CSR blir en angelägenhet för internkommunikationen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

How Critical Digital Method Development can Strengthen Studies of Media and Terrorism2019In: Media and Journalism in an Age of Terrorism / [ed] Renaud de la Brosse and Kristoffer Holt, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2019, p. 168-Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter I argue and describe how studies of digital media and terrorism can be strengthened by increased methodological awareness concerning critical approaches and digital methods as critical digital methods. Critical digital method development is research involved in a reflexive project regarding digital methods and their role in shaping critical terrorism studies. The chapter includes suggestions for how this critical digital method development can be furthered.

Medvetna frågor och val: Utveckling av metoder för att undersöka användargenererat material i digitala kontexter2016In: Nordicom Information, ISSN 0349-5949, Vol. 38, no 3, p. 57-70Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This is an article concerning the development of methods for studying user-generated content (UGC) in digital contexts. Method development can advantageously mean applying analytical reference points: a form of perspective making and navigation with a common understanding of where different disciplines can contribute. Cultural studies on ‘pleasure’ raises the understanding connected to how UGC creates meaning for the people who use and create the material, for the content which has different meanings and for the view that politics is broader than news. Design research on ‘personas’ recalls how images of users are built into the development of services as well as in research. Informatics (computer science) ‘data mining’ deepens understanding of the importance of the digital as research material (data) and the skills that are required to analyse the data. These three analytical points of reference work in interaction with discussions related to tools about precisely how a study may be designed.

Searching for voice as democratic values in contemporary Swedish web archive initiatives2017In: Digital Democracy: Book of Abstracts / [ed] ECREA Sections: Communication and Democracy; and Media Industries and Cultural Production, Flemmingsberg, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents initial results from a study of various contemporary web archive initiatives in Sweden. Archives are subjective rather than objective, as well as methods for archiving and tracking and searching and documenting for digital material research (MacNeil & Eastwood,2017). The purpose of the study is to analyse and distinguish what voices are made present in the web archive initiatives, how digitization matter in this voice-making and how this can be understood in relation to democratic values.

The method is a qualitative content analysis of the web archive initiatives online presence (the archive web site), including both self-decriptions and the site’s affordances. Empirically the material for the analysis consist of the following Swedish national archive initiatives:

    1. Kungliga Biblioteket, Sweden’s national library, a national initiative to preserve the cultural heritage of the aftermath;

    2. Rättviseförmedlingen, NGO, uses inquiries and dissemination of lists using social media to broaden the selection of competencies;

    3. The Center for Business History, a non-profit association with companies as primary members, works to preserve and tell business history;

    4. Platsr, Riksantikvarieämbetets site for stories and memories where anyone can contribute;

    5. Kringla, collects heritage archives.

These archive initiatives have different aims, different initiators with different interaction and contributing actors, and use different (and more or less visible) archiving methods.

The analysis focuses on voice in the archive, based on Carpentier’s analysis model (2011) forparticipant-oriented processes. Analysis show variations of values linked to voice where technologydirects attention and power to certain “voices” (themes, categories etc). These variations, this diversity,is discussed in relation to resistance and the perspective of how the archive is part of larger public (public voice). The paper concludes with a discussion of these various public voice’s implicationsin relation to democratic values as universal service, participation and agency.

Super Teletext: A Social Shaping of Teletext as Locating Newness in a Media Convergence Future2016In: Teletext in Europe: From the Analogue to the Digital Era / [ed] Halvard Moe and Hilde Van den Bulck, Gothenburg: Nordicom, 2016, p. 131-149Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of teletext’s role in the development of digital terrestrial television in Sweden, particularly as super teletext, focusing on the public service television company Sveriges Television (Swedish Television) (SVT), and this company’s policy documents, both strategy documents and public service audits, in the period 1996-2002. The purpose is to articulate and deepen our understanding of teletext’s involvement in this development, guided by the following questions: What were the arguments SVT used for approaching and developing teletext? How did teletext’s placement in the organization change? What general understanding about the dynamics of media change can be found in teletext development? The analysis is made from the general epistemological standpoint of social shaping of technology, the specific media convergence theory often used as a hypothesis for digital media development, and an identifiable concept to highlight the local and situated aspect of newness in media technology development. The main results suggest that super teletext initially made it possible for teletext to be a part of locating newness in a media convergence future in: connecting teletext to a media convergence hypothesis; serving as an aligning-symbol between TV and PC; functioning as an argument for technological experiments; ascribing newness as a way of securing public service values in a digital future. Later, super teletext was described as inferior to teletext, in a combination of lacking interactivity and going beyond teletext’s close relationship with news and the tradition of news culture.

The Politics of Women’s Digital Archives and Its Significance for the History of Journalism2018In: Digital Journalism, ISSN 2167-0811, E-ISSN 2167-082X, Vol. 6, no 9, p. 1222-1238Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the politics of digital archives focused explicitly on women journal- ists and their work. A key question is here the wider implications and value for journal- ism historiography. A qualitative analysis is conducted of the online presence of two illustrative archives, one an oral history project called Women in Journalism and the other a women’s history database called Kvinnsam. The analysis finds that whereas the archives do not lend themselves to participation as agency in co-constructing history, they give access to otherwise nonsearchable, nonvisible, and nonaccessible material of relevance to the history of women journalists and their work. The agency and political power of the archives are dependent on institutions, first, to simply materialize as online archives and, second, to (potentially) affect political matters and express political acts of resistance. For journalism history studies, this means engaging with the archives that exist, what forms they have, and how they are used. For digital journalism, this also implies a discussion of how archival experimenting could develop the field.

Media audiences imagining themselves in relation to future living2017In: Audiences2030 Imagining a Future for Audiences: Book of Abstracts / [ed] CEDAR network, Lisboa, 2017, Vol. 1, p. 36-36Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Audience studies have a history of studying people reading, listening and watching mass media at home. Domestication, as Silverstone and Haddon (1996) describe it, is an understanding of the design/domestication interface, implying a process of mutually shaping. This study contributes to an understanding of the future of audiences as still taking place in a home where connected media becomes integrated.

By using a survey of students (n=1287) on what media selection is considered to be important to have access to in future student accommodation, a study is made of the implications of a youthful audience and a connected audience.

The results show that students use and highly value access to both old and new media content and services and want to gain access to general as well as particular content and services (like sports or TV series). Hence, youthful audiences self-perceived attitudes towards being and becoming connected audiences imply a domestic access resembling the value of public access. Understandings of connected media in relation the interplay of youthful audiences and accommodation illustrate the socio-political challenge of the domestic sphere as configuring and offering a universal service. The socio-political challenge of structuring future connected audiences is what connections are actually made possible by access. By studying attitudes to access as well as actual inventories of access in the domestic sphere, media usage patterns and perceptions can be understood as taking place within set frames. These frames are set by various actors, like owners of apartment buildings, as more or less in a dialogue with and agency of potential audiences.

En himmelsblå höst: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys om etnocentrism inom svensk sportjournalistik2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to see how well newspapers manage to maintain their objectivity and balance when covering a Swedish team’s matches in an European tournament. We did this by doing a qualitative content analysis of the two biggest local newspapers, Sydsvenskan and Skånska Dagbladet, and the two biggest tabloids, Aftonbladet and Expressen – and their coverage of Malmö FF’s participation in the UEFA Champions League 2015. We analyzed all the post-game texts of the six games in the group stage – except for texts based on personal opinions, such as chronicles. The results show that the newspapers lose their objectivity and write more about the Swedish team and the Swedish players than the opponent team and their non-Swedish players. The result also show that the local newspapers put the focus on Malmö FF as a team, while the major tabloids focus on Malmö FF as being a part of Sweden and Swedish football. Last but not least the results also show that the ethnocentric and nationalistic attributes of the journalists play a major role in their writing.

Varför var det så svårt?: En flermetodsanalys av läsbarhet av nyhetsartiklar i Dagens Nyheter under 15 år2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the readability of news articles published in the Swedish national newspaper Dagens Nyheter during the years 1999 - 2013. Our hypothesis was that the written language in newspapers is simpler today than it was 15 years ago. To measure the possible change of the written language in a quantitative study we chose to use a method to calculate the readability of 30 news articles, two from each year. We could not see any development of the language level so we chose to do a complementary qualitative study of the layout and presentation of the news articles. This secondary study showed a significant change in how news is presented throughout the years. The articles from 2003 and forth were presented with more space and more pictures and photos than the articles in our sample published before 2003. We used different theories to support the cause of our study and to analyse and make conclusions from the results. We used the social responsibility theory to support our hypothesis and prove why this problem is relevant and worth studying. The other theories we used to analyse the articles and make conclusions to answer our questions were the framing theory and theories about informational texts, like news articles, and news values.
